Piet Mondrian, 1929ith ‘Composition No. II’ from 1930 painting sold for $51 Million at Sothebys auction house.
In his well-known 1917 essay, “The New Plastic Painting,” which promoted abstraction as a means of expressing modern life, Mondrian gave his approach the name Neo-Plasticism. Don’t be misled by Mondrian’s usage of the term “plastic,” which he used to describe the plastic arts, which include forms like sculpture that mold three-dimensional space or, in his case, canvas paintings. European painters have been attempting to depict three-dimensional forms in plausible environments for centuries in an effort to conjure up realistic illusions.

And just like that a new auction record is set for Piet Mondrian with ‘Composition No. II’ from 1930 selling for $51 million. The star lot from tonight’s Modern Evening Auction, Mondrian’s masterpiece was painted at the high point of his career and possesses the balance, harmony and “life” that drove the artist to create the most daring compositions of the twentieth century.
