Piece by Piece is a 2024 American animated biographical documentary comedy directed and co-produced by Morgan Neville. The film opens with Pharrell Williams speaking directly to Neville, explaining his vision of telling his life story through Lego animation. Pharrell shares that he views the world like a Lego set—constantly building something new from pre-existing pieces.
His journey begins in Virginia Beach, where he grew up in the Atlantis housing projects with his parents, Pharaoh and Carolyn. Living with synesthesia, Pharrell could see colors in music, and this unique perception fueled his passion for sound, inspired by artists like Stevie Wonder.
In school, he struggled academically, but his love for music led him to meet Chad Hugo. Together, they formed early bonds with future legends like Missy Elliott, Pusha T, and Timbaland. Eventually, Pharrell, Chad, and Shay Haley joined forces to create The Neptunes, and their big break came when they performed at a school talent show, catching the attention of renowned record producer Teddy Riley.
Impressed by their talent, Teddy signed them, and Pharrell began contributing to projects, including writing a verse for Wreckx-n-Effect’s “Rump Shaker.” However, working under Teddy’s guidance meant that Pharrell couldn’t fully pursue his musical vision, setting the stage for the next chapter in his creative evolution.
Produced in collaboration with The Lego Group, Neville’s Tremolo Productions, Pharrell’s I Am Other, Pure Imagination Studios, and Tongal, Piece by Piece is the fifth theatrical Lego-based film and the first under Universal Pictures’ partnership with Lego. The film’s voice cast includes Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, and Snoop Dogg, each adding depth and energy to this vibrant and heartfelt documentary.
