“Pharmageddon” strikes the United States, causing walkouts at several pharmacies, such as CVS and Walgreens (WBA).
Organizers have projected that roughly 4,500 pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are currently participating in a significant protest involving various retail chains, such as CVS and Walgreens. Notably, employees of Walgreens and CVS are predominantly non-unionized, making it challenging to orchestrate a large-scale walkout.
These pharmacists, who are voicing their concerns about deteriorating working conditions within the country’s major retail chains, initiated their most extensive protest of the season on Monday, which they’ve aptly named “Pharmageddon.” Organizers estimate that this movement has attracted participation from approximately 4,500 pharmacists and pharmacy technicians representing various chains, including CVS, Rite Aid, and Walgreens.
Furthermore, the movement garnered support from the American Pharmacists Association, the industry’s largest professional organization, which expressed its solidarity with all the participants in a released statement.
Chain pharmacies, including CVS and Walgreens, have consistently reduced their staffing levels while increasing the responsibilities of their frontline employees. This situation was problematic even before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the pandemic exacerbated the challenges faced by these workers.
According to an uncontrolled survey conducted in 2021 by the American Pharmacists Association and the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations, it was found that out of 4,482 pharmacy workers, 74% expressed that they lacked sufficient time to carry out nonclinical tasks safely. Additionally, 75% of respondents indicated that there was an insufficient presence of other staff members, such as pharmacy technicians and nurses, to safely handle clinical duties.
