PGA News: Scottie Scheffler opens as heavy U.S. Open favorite

During what Scottie Scheffler deemed a “hectic” week, the world’s No. 1-ranked golfer was arrested and saw his record streak of rounds of par or better snapped during the PGA Championship.

And he still managed to post his ninth consecutive top-10 finish, the latest coming against one of the deepest fields of the year.

Scheffler has won four of his past six events — including his second Masters — and has been installed as the consensus +400 favorite ahead of next month’s U.S. Open at Pinehurst. He is well ahead of world No. 2 Rory McIlroy, who is being offered at +900 by DraftKings and +1000 by BetMGM.

Scheffler finished third in last year’s U.S. Open won by Wyndham Clark at the Los Angeles Country Club, where McIlroy was the runner-up.

Xander Schauffele finally shook the major curse Sunday, fending off Bryson DeChambeau to win the PGA Championship. That followed finishing second to McIlroy in a signature event the previous week at the Wells Fargo Championship. He has the third-shortest U.S. Open odds at +1200 at BetMGM and +1400 at DraftKings.

Spain’s Jon Rahm, who missed the cut at the PGA Championship, is equal to Schauffele at DraftKings and is tied for the fourth-shortest odds at +1600 at BetMGM along with Viktor Hovland.

Schauffele’s putt on the 72nd hole on Sunday, which circled the cup before falling, saved him from a three-hole playoff against DeChambeau. The LIV Golf star won the U.S. Open in 2020 but has just the seventh-shortest odds at +2000 at BetMGM and is tied for eighth at the same odds at DraftKings.

Those are longer odds than young Swedish star Ludvig Aberg, who missed the cut at Valhalla but is being offered at +1800 by BetMGM to win the U.S. Open. That’s ahead of DeChambeau and two-time U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka.

Xander Schauffele (+1200)

Viktor Hovland (+1600)
Ludvig Aberg (+1800)
Brooks Koepka (+2000)
Bryson DeChambeau (+2000)
Collin Morikawa (+2000)
Patrick Cantlay (+2500)
Cameron Smith (+2800)
Max Homa (+2800)
Hideki Matsuyama (+3300)
Joaquin Niemann (+3300)
Jordan Spieth (+3300)
Justin Thomas (+3300)
Tony Finau (+3300)

Tiger Woods is coming off a missed cut at the PGA Championship but intends to play at Pinehurst. The 15-time major champion is a +15000 longshot at BetMGM while DraftKings is offering +10000 odds on Woods winning a 16th major next month.

That’s still well ahead of Phil Mickelson, who is being offered at +25000 and +15000, respectively. Mickelson, who needs a U.S. Open title to complete the career Grand Slam, has famously finished second at the event six times — most recently in 2013.
