OAKMONT, Pa. — The final round of the U.S. Open was suspended for nearly one hour and 40 minutes Sunday due to heavy rain at Oakmont Country Club.

The rain gear and umbrellas had come out in the half-hour leading up to the official delay at 4:01 p.m. As the storm picked up, multiple greens around the course became slick with rainwater and unplayable.

Groundskeepers armed with squeegees prepared the course for competition as the rain lightened up, and the major championship resumed just before 5:40 p.m.

At the time of the delay, Sam Burns held a one-shot edge over Australia’s Adam Scott at 2 under and 1 under par, respectively. Both players were 2 over through seven holes. England’s Tyrrell Hatton and Norway’s Viktor Hovland were tied for third at 1 over.
