PGA News: Favored Team USA heavily backed ahead of Ryder Cup

The United States continues to draw strong public backing just two days before the start of the 45th Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, N.Y.

The Americans opened as -140 favorites at BetMGM, but those odds have shortened further to -150 with the U.S. backed by 54 percent of the money and 63 percent of the total bets placed on this week’s winner.

Team USA has been even more popular at DraftKings, drawing 73 percent of the winning money and 77 percent of the total bets at the same -150 odds.

The U.S. leads the Ryder Cup 27-15-2 overall, but Europe has won eight of the last 11 renditions. That includes two years ago, when Europe won 16 1/2-11 1/2 points. Despite this, Europe has moved from +150 to +170 while receiving only 36 percent of the total wagered money.

The remaining 1 percent of the money has been placed on the third tie in the event’s history. If the teams were to tie 14-14, Europe would retain the Cup.

The host country has won the past five Cups, and the heavily partisan crowd anticipated at Bethpage Black is expected to give the United States an edge beyond what it enjoys on paper in the world rankings among the 12 players on each team.

Captain Keegan Bradley’s squad is headlined by world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and includes No. 4 Xander Schauffele, along with LIV Golf star Bryson DeChambeau.

“Bettors continue to bring support for Keegan Bradley’s Team USA to reclaim the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black. The Americans are now at -150 as they face arguably the strongest European team ever,” BetMGM senior trader Matt Wall said. “Scottie Scheffler and Cameron Young, who grew up only 50 miles from Bethpage, are getting action in the player points market for America, while Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood lead the way for the Europeans on their end.”

Scheffler is the most selected in the top points scorer prop market, drawing 31.1 percent of all bets. Team Europe’s Rory McIlroy follows him at 12.8 percent and DeChambeau at 11.2 percent.

Scheffler also has the most support to be the Americans’ top points producer. He has been backed by 28.6 percent of the bets, followed by DeChambeau with 18.4. The next closest is Russell Henley at 9.8 percent.

For Europe, Fleetwood has garnered the most support to be the team’s leading points producer. He sits at 28.2 percent, followed by Ludvig Aberg at 11.1 percent and Robert MacIntyre at 10.3 percent. McIlroy is not among the top five in terms of action, with his odds at +350 as the favorite to lead Europe.
