New Orleans Pelicans forward Trey Murphy III strained his right hamstring during Wednesday night’s practice session, the team announced Thursday.
An MRI taken on Thursday confirmed the injury, the Pelicans said. He will be re-examined in about three weeks. New Orleans opens its preseason schedule on Monday against the visiting Orlando Magic. The regular season begins Oct. 23 with a home game against the Chicago Bulls.
Murphy, 24, averaged 14.8 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.2 assists — all career bests — in 57 games (23 starts) last season.
He was selected 17th overall in the 2021 NBA Draft by the Memphis Grizzlies, who dealt him about a week later to the Pelicans as part of a three-team trade. For his career, Murphy averages 11.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 198 games (89 starts) in three seasons with New Orleans.
