In a new court filing this week, a state forensic expert described details about the fatal injuries suffered by Paul Murdaugh, the son of Alex Murdaugh. The grisly details were described graphically. Paul Murdaugh and his mother Maggie Murdaugh were killed on June 7,2021. Father and husband, Alex Murdaugh, have been charged. Murdaugh, the scion of a powerful legal dynasty is expected to face a trial on January 23, 2023.
Fox News reported the details. According to the state of South Carolina, Alex Murdaugh has been accused of shooting his son Paul, with a shotgun, twice. State forensic expert Dr. Kenneth Kinsey said that in the second shot Paul’s “brain was completely detached from head.” The affidavit also mentioned this as the cause of “immediate death.”
Maggie Murdaugh, the 52-year-old wife of Alex Murdaugh and the mother of 22-year-old Paul Murdaugh was shot five times, with a semiautomatic rifle. She died roughly 30 yards away from son Paul.
According to Fox News, defense attorneys for Murdaugh had claimed in a previous motion that blood on a white T-shirt had been transferred when their client Alex Murdaugh had found the bodies of his wife and son. They said that Alex had “frantically checked them for signs of life.”
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) had used the services of an Oklahoma based forensic expert Tom Bevel to study the blood splatter on the white T-shirt that was worn by Alex Murdaugh, on that fateful night on which the murders occurred.
Kinsey’s affidavit was included in a motion that was filed by Alex Murdaugh’s lawyers. The Tuesday filing asked Judge Clifton Newman not to allow the testimony of a blood splatter expert for the state, at the trial of their client Murdaugh.
According to the news site, Bevel’s initial report said that the stains had been “consistent with transfers and not back splatter from a bullet wound.” His conclusion said that the T-shirt had been “stained with high-velocity blood splatter resulting from shooting Maggie and Paul.”
Murdaugh’s attorneys claimed that Bevel had been badgered to change his report, by SLED.
According to the news site, the filing said that the T-shirt had later been destroyed “for purposes of forensics testing by the unnecessary application of an oxidizing chemical stain.”
A source, who saw the crime scene photos, told the news site that Paul’s head had “exploded like a watermelon.” He added that Paul’s face could be seen but the rest of his head, “…it’s just gone. Totally empty.”
