After the riotous behavior of the mob that was instigated by posts on Facebook and Twitter, the two social media sites banned a few accounts including that of President Trump for breaking their rules on civility in posts. Many Far-Right members and supporters flocked en masse to Parler.
Unfortunately for Parler, the app has not been properly policed. The site has many incendiary posts. Apple and Google removed it from their app stores. This step was taken after too many posts encouraging violence and crime were still up on the site.
On Saturday, after Parler was removed from the app stores on Google and Apple, Amazon said it was removing it from its web hosting service in twenty-four hours for repeated rule violations. On Saturday, Amazon had sent the app 98 examples of posts that incited violence, many of which were still active.
This is a major move as Parler would go totally offline if it cannot find another hosting service on Sunday.
In a statement John Matze, Chief Executive of Parler, said that the tech giants had acted in a coordinated effort “to completely remove free speech of the internet.” He also spoke of finding another company to host it.
Several new startups have promised “unbiased” and “free speech” as words to get Trump supporters and Far-Right members to join their sites and apps. However, tough enforcement measures from tech giants will make it difficult for violence and crime to survive under the umbrella of “free speech.”
