“Palm Springs” is a delightfully offbeat romantic comedy that reinvigorates the genre with a clever twist on the classic time-loop trope. Directed by Max Barbakow and penned by Andy Siara, the film stars Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti, whose chemistry drives this existential rom-com to unexpected heights.
The film begins with a seemingly mundane scene in the Palm Springs desert, only to turn into the surreal when an earthquake splits the earth open. This act of nature is a metaphor for the emotional and psychological chasms the characters are about to traverse. Niles (Andy Samberg) wakes up in his hotel room, where he’s staying with his disinterested girlfriend, Misty (Meredith Hagner), for the wedding of Misty’s best friend, Tala (Camilla Mendes). The opening sequence humorously sets the tone, showcasing Nyles’ jaded and nihilistic outlook as he lethargically floats through the day in a Hawaiian shirt and shorts, a beer perpetually in hand.
The story begins at the wedding reception, where Nyles’ nonchalant demeanor is juxtaposed against the frenetic energy of the event. Misty delivers a less-than-stellar speech, prompting Tala’s sister, Sarah (Cristin Milioti), to be pushed into the spotlight unprepared. Nyles rescues her with a flawless impromptu speech, hinting at his more profound, if resigned, engagement with life. The dynamic between Nyles and Sarah evolves quickly from awkward strangers to reluctant allies, especially after Nyles reveals Misty’s infidelity in a hilariously nonchalant manner.
As the evening progresses, Nyles and Sarah’s budding connection takes an unexpected turn when they wander into the desert, only to be sucked into a bizarre time loop that traps them in an eternal repetition of the wedding day. This high-concept premise is where “Palm Springs” shines, blending sharp humor with poignant existential musings.
With all the humor, though, the film strikes an unexpectedly tender, almost bittersweet chord. The humor is shadowed by sorrow, loneliness, and helplessness. “Palm Springs” works by stealth, not announcing its tone in broad strokes. There’s sleight of hand: judging from the opening sequence, when a bunch of people gather in Palm Springs for a wedding, you think this might be your run-of-the-mill party-out-of-town kooky-family-ensemble film. But “Palm Springs” is full of surprises.
Andy Samberg excels as Nyles, balancing his comedic chops with a surprisingly deep portrayal of a man grappling with the meaninglessness of his repetitive existence. Cristin Milioti matches him beat for beat, bringing a raw vulnerability to Sarah, whose baggage makes her a compelling counterpart to Nyles’ detached cynicism. Their interactions are the film’s heart, oscillating between hilarity and heartfelt moments that explore themes of love, regret, and redemption.
Supporting performances from Peter Gallagher as the kindly father of the bride and J.K. Simmons as Roy, a fellow time-loop victim with a vendetta, add layers of depth and humor. Simmons, in particular, brings a darkly comic energy that underscores the film’s exploration of consequences and forgiveness.
Visually, “Palm Springs” makes excellent use of its desert setting, with vibrant cinematography that contrasts the monotonous nature of the time loop with the inherent beauty of the surroundings. The soundtrack, featuring an eclectic mix of songs, further enhances the whimsical yet reflective atmosphere.
“Palm Springs” is a refreshing take on the romantic comedy genre, offering a blend of sharp wit, genuine emotion, and philosophical inquiry. Max Barbakow’s direction, combined with Andy Siara’s inventive script and standout performances from Samberg and Milioti, makes this film a must-watch. It’s a quirky, heartwarming journey that reminds us that even in the most repetitive of circumstances, there’s always room for growth, connection, and unexpected joy.
