Notre Dame looks to get it in gear vs. slumping Syracuse

Notre Dame will look to build momentum on Saturday afternoon when it opens Atlantic Coast Conference play against visiting Syracuse in South Bend, Ind.

The Fighting Irish (6-1) have been a force in nonconference play, including a convincing 70-52 victory against Michigan State on Thursday.

Cormac Ryan scored 20 of his 23 points in the first half against the Spartans. It was a key bounce-back performance for the Fighting Irish, who sustained their first loss with a 63-51 setback to St. Bonaventure on Nov. 25.

Ryan made 8 of 11 shots from the floor — including 6 of 7 attempts from 3-point range — for Notre Dame on Thursday.

“I think we were due for one, all of us,” Ryan said after the win. “We have guys who are too good at playing the right way. I think we were still kind of finding ourselves and we picked a good night to figure it out.”

Nate Laszewski is leading Notre Dame with 16.9 points per game, while Dane Goodwin (14.0), J.J. Starling (13.0), Ryan (11.9), and Trey Wertz (11.3) are also averaging double-digit scoring.

Syracuse (3-4) is trying to dig itself out of a rut.

The Orange have lost three straight, including a lopsided 73-44 setback to Illinois in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Tuesday.

“We’ve got some young guys that are trying to figure out what they have to do, and they didn’t figure it out very well tonight,” Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. “We got a lesson.”

This comes after a season in which his team finished under .500 and ninth in the ACC. His .485 winning percentage following the 16-17 campaign was his worst of his coaching career.

Judah Mintz has led Syracuse in scoring, averaging 15.1 points per game. Jesse Edwards is contributing 13.7 and Joseph Girard III is adding 13.4 to round out the Orange attack.

Surging Oklahoma tries to keep Villanova on downturn

Oklahoma fell 52-51 to Sam Houston in the season opener on Nov. 7.

It hasn’t lost since.

The Sooners (6-1) will look for their seventh consecutive victory when they battle host Villanova on Saturday in Philadelphia.

Oklahoma most recently defeated Nebraska, Seton Hall and Mississippi to capture the ESPN Events Invitational in Kissimmee, Fla.

The Sooners beat Mississippi 59-55 in the title game behind Grant Sherfield’s 12 points and Sam Godwin’s 11. Tanner Groves and Bijan Cortes had 10 each in the balanced effort.

“When you win a championship that’s three games in four days, you need a lot of contributions,” Oklahoma head coach Porter Moser said. “And that’s what happened, which really excites us over these last four days. We got a lot of contributions from different guys.”

Now the Sooners will aim to continue this positive momentum against the Wildcats.

“It’s the excitement on their face to win a championship,” Moser said. “There’s so much that goes on behind the scenes in a tournament setting to win and advance. These guys locked in for these last four days, and I was happy for them to have this moment.”

After winning two of its first three games, Villanova has dropped four in a row.

The Wildcats (2-5) were swept by Iowa State, Portland and Oregon in the Phil Knight Invitational in Portland, Ore.

It has been an uncharacteristic start for the Wildcats, who reached the Final Four last season.

But Hall of Fame head coach Jay Wright retired after more than 500 victories and two national championships and was replaced by Kyle Neptune.

Villanova has been without two key players in Justin Moore (Achilles) and Cam Whitmore (right thumb).

While Whitmore has been practicing, it’s unclear when he will make his anticipated debut.

Caleb Daniels led the Wildcats with 16 points and Brendan Hausen added 15 in their 74-67 loss to Oregon last Sunday.

“Our guys fought,” Neptune said. “We had our chances but in the end it just wasn’t enough.”

Villanova held a 67-64 lead with 2:27 left before the Ducks pulled away for the final 10 points.

“We just couldn’t execute,” Neptune said. “We couldn’t get rebounds, couldn’t get stops.”

No. 11 Alabama aims to avoid letdown vs. South Dakota State

After a 103-101, four-overtime win over then-No. 1 North Carolina secured third place at the Phil Knight Invitational last weekend in Portland, Ore., No. 11 Alabama returns home to face South Dakota State on Saturday night.

The Crimson Tide (6-1) have to avoid looking past the Jackrabbits (3-5) with another No. 1 team looming on the schedule. After Saturday’s tilt in Tuscaloosa, Ala., Alabama has a week off before playing at top-ranked Houston on Dec. 10.

In the win against the Tar Heels, Jahvon Quinerly, Brandon Miller, Jaden Bradley and Charles Bediako spearheaded the Crimson Tide’s overtime magic.

Quinerly and Miller scored all seven of Alabama’s points in the third OT after the Crimson Tide team trailed by six points. Bradley and Bediako recorded all of the Tide’s seven points in the fourth OT to secure the victory.

“That was a fun one,” Alabama coach Nate Oats said. “I don’t know if I have been involved in a four-overtime game before. I was losing track of how many overtimes we were in at the end, but a lot of credit to our guys, we showed a lot of character there and we could have folded.

“To come back from being down six in the third overtime, we were tired and both teams like to get up and down, and it turned into a halfcourt game for a majority of the end of the game.”

Quinerly looks to be rounding into form following his return from an ACL injury on Nov. 15. He had a season-high 21 points, eight assists, six rebounds and three steals in 44 minutes against the Tar Heels.

Miller has been Alabama’s top player — and its most clutch performer. He leads the Crimson Tide in scoring (19.6 points per game), rebounding (8.9 per game) and minutes played (33.9 per game). He also is shooting a team-best 48 percent from the 3-point arc (24 of 50).

Bradley (8.4 points, 3.0 assists) has been terrific off the bench, and Bediako (6.0 points, 7.4 rebounds) has been steady in the post. Mark Sears ranks second on the team in minutes (33.3) and points per game (14.3) after putting up a team-high 24 on Sunday.

Last year, South Dakota State led the country in 3-point shooting (44.5 percent). However, the Jackrabbits have taken a step back in that area and were shooting 35.9 percent from behind the arc after going 10 of 21 from deep in an 83-68 road loss to Kent State on Friday.

Zeke Mayo, who scored a team-high 12 against the Golden Flashes, leads the Jackrabbits with averages of 12.5 points and seven rebounds. Mayo and William Kyle III (10.5 points, 3.9 rebounds) are a nice inside-out combo for a South Dakota State team that features nine players who average double digits in minutes played.

Alex Arians (7.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists), Matt Dentlinger (9.4 points) and Charlie Easley (8.9 points) are also reliable contributors for head coach Eric Henderson.

Luke Appel was the Summit League Sixth Man of the Year last season and a preseason first-team all-conference pick entering the current campaign. However, he is averaging just 6.4 points this season, and he didn’t play against Kent State.

Jazz ride second-quarter surge to defeat of Pacers

Lauri Markkanen registered his 10th double-double of the season with 24 points and 13 rebounds to boost the Utah Jazz to a 139-119 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Friday night in Salt Lake City.

Rookie Walker Kessler also had a double-double, his second, with career highs of 20 points and 11 rebounds to help the Jazz win their second straight game after a five-game skid. Jordan Clarkson contributed 19 points, including eight during a key 17-0 run late in the first half, while Collin Sexton scored 18 and Malik Beasley had 16.

Myles Turner led Indiana with 18 points, while Jalen Smith and Tyrese Haliburton each had 14 as the Pacers fell to 1-3 to start their seven-game road trip.

The first half featured a couple of wild momentum shifts before the Jazz seized control for good after seeing a 15-point vanish. Indiana trailed by double digits the entire second half.

Smith capped a 15-5 Pacers run with a layup to help erase the lead and tie it at 54-all in the second quarter.

The Jazz’s response was impressive: the Clarkson-fueled 17-0 push in 3 1/2 minutes sent Utah into the locker room up 75-59.

Jarred Vanderbilt ignited the game-changing run with a dunk. Markkanen followed with a trey, Clarkson added a dunk and a layup, Vanderbilt scored a couple of buckets and then Clarkson concluded the surge with two free throws and a driving layup to make it 71-54.

Five Jazz players scored in double figures in the first half: Markkanen (16), Clarkson and Beasley (11), and Kelly Olynyk and Sexton (10).

The Pacers crept within 10 in the third quarter, but the Jazz roared back to take a 22-point lead at 101-79 with 1:02 left in the period, after Talen Horton-Tucker finished a 7-0 run with a short jumper.

Utah, which continues its six-game homestead Saturday vs. Portland, shot a sizzling 55.4 percent. Indiana finished at 43.5 percent.

Rockets pull out one-point win over Suns

Jalen Green scored 30 points and reserve center Bruno Fernando keyed a fourth-quarter comeback as the Houston Rockets earned a 122-121 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Friday.

Green made one of two free throws with 28.8 seconds left before the Rockets survived the final frantic seconds, with the Suns missing four shots on an extended final possession. Devin Booker, who scored a game-high 41 points, misfired twice, including on a 16-footer at the buzzer.

Houston snapped the Suns’ six-game winning streak by turning a 14-2 run early in the fourth quarter into a 106-106 deadlock. Fernando, who produced 10 points and five rebounds in the final period, ran roughshod in the paint as the Rockets shot 13 of 19 in the fourth.

Jabari Smith Jr. added 17 points and Kevin Porter Jr. had 15 points, six boards, seven assists for the Rockets, who got a key corner 3-pointer from Eric Gordon that bumped the lead to 118-113.

Booker and Cameron Payne (20 points, 12 assists) lifted Phoenix back even with 3-pointers only for both to miss, along with Mikal Bridges (22 points, eight rebounds), desperate heaves after Green gave the Rockets the lead with his 12th successful free throw.

Up by seven at halftime, the Suns burst out of the gate in the third quarter. When Payne dropped in a floater with 3:59 left in the period, Phoenix had its largest lead of the game at 89-73.

Green poured in 20 points on 6-for-10 shooting in the third quarter, tallying eight points during a 13-5 rally that enabled the Rockets to cut the 16-point deficit in half. But when Booker sank a difficult baseline fadeaway prior to the buzzer, the Suns led 96-86 entering the fourth.

Booker and Bridges combined for 35 first-half points on 14-of-21 shooting. Phoenix shot 54.5 percent in the half, including 50 percent (10 of 20) from 3-point range. The Rockets made 39.1 percent from the floor before the break and were 3 of 15 from long distance.

The Suns held a 64-57 lead at the intermission despite nine turnovers.

Overall on the night, Phoenix made 52.9 percent from the field and 17 of 37 (45.9 percent) from 3-point range. Houston wound up at 49.4 percent on field-goal attempts and 33.3 percent (8 of 24) on 3-point attempts.

NCAAF News: No. 11 Utah ends No. 4 USC’s playoff hopes with Pac-12 title win

Cameron Rising passed for 310 yards and three touchdowns as No. 11 Utah routed No. 4 Southern California 47-24 on Friday in the Pac-12 championship game at Las Vegas, ending the Trojans’ College Football Playoff aspirations.

Utah (10-3), which handed USC its only other loss of the season on Oct. 15 in Salt Lake City, claimed its second straight Pac-12 title thanks to a second-quarter rally and an overwhelming defensive performance over the game’s final three quarters.

USC (11-2) jumped ahead 17-3 less than three minutes into the second period and appeared headed to a lopsided win. Heisman Trophy-contending quarterback Caleb Williams threw touchdowns of 2 yards to Tahj Washington and 3 yards to Raleek Brown in the first quarter, completing a pair of drives that the Trojans extended with fourth-down conversions.

However, those possessions foreshadowed difficulties to come for the usually prolific Trojans offense.

Utah held USC to 1-for-12 on third-down attempts, conceding the only successfully third-down conversion early in the fourth quarter. The Utah defense got to Williams for seven sacks, led by Mohamoud Diabate and Gabe Reid with two each.

The Utes also made 11 tackles for loss, part of Utah stymying USC to the tune of just 56 rushing yards.

Utah’s Ja’Quinden Jackson and Micah Bernard both gained more rushing yards individually than USC accrued as a team, with Jackson going for 105 and Bernard finishing with 88.

Jackson scored Utah’s first touchdown of the game, and the first of his two on the night, late in the second quarter. A stop on the other side set the stage for Rising to lead the Utes on a 14-play, 81-yard drive in just 1:38 that culminated with the Utah quarterback finding Jaylen Dixon for a game-tying, 4-yard touchdown pass just before halftime.

That possession flipped the tone of the game, as Utah took a lead it never relinquished coming out of the locker room when Rising connected with Money Parks for a 57-yard touchdown.

Caleb Williams — who passed for 363 yards — threw the last of his three touchdowns to Mario Williams early in the fourth quarter to pull USC to within 27-24. It was all Utah from there.

Thomas Yassmin broke a series of tackles on the way to a 60-yard touchdown reception, Jackson rushed 53 yards for his second score, and Bernard put on the exclamation point with a 23-yard run.

Utah outgained USC 533 yards to 419 and won the turnover battle 2-1. USC came into Friday’s championship plus-23 on turnovers for the season.

LeBron James passes Magic Johnson for sixth in assists

A current Los Angeles Lakers star overtook an all-time Lakers great when LeBron James moved past Magic Johnson for sixth place on the NBA’s all-time assist list on Friday.

James dished out 11 assists (and scored 28 points) while helping the Lakers beat the host Milwaukee Bucks 133-129. With his ninth assist of the night, finding Anthony Davis (44 points) for a 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter, James surpassed Johnson’s total of 10,141.

By night’s end, James had 10,144 assists in his 20 NBA seasons and 1,381 games. Johnson played 13 seasons and 906 games.

The players still ahead of James in career assists are John Stockton (15,806), Jason Kidd (12,091), Chris Paul (11,071), Steve Nash (10,335) and Mark Jackson (10,334).

James is currently second in all-time NBA points with 37,451. The all-time lead is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar with 38,387.

James, 37, is a four-time NBA champion, four-time MVP and 18-time All-Star.

NCAAF News: Texas A&M QB Haynes King, CB Denver Harris to transfer

Texas A&M quarterback Haynes King and cornerback Denver Harris entered the transfer portal Friday.

King is a graduate transfer, while Harris just completed his freshman season after arriving in College Station as a five-star prospect.

King was a part-time starter at quarterback for the Aggies in 2021 and 2022. His 2021 season was cut short after two starts due to a season-ending injury.

He appeared in six games this season and threw for 1,220 yards, seven touchdowns and six interceptions.

The Aggies also have former LSU transfer Max Johnson and freshman Conner Weigman at quarterback.

Harris, meanwhile, recorded 14 tackles and three pass breakups in his freshman season.

He was rated the No. 23 overall prospect and the fourth-best cornerback in the Class of 2022 according to 247Sports’ composite rankings. His signing contributed to the Aggies putting together the consensus No. 1 recruiting class in the cycle.

That didn’t help Texas A&M on the field this year. The Aggies (5-7, 2-6 SEC) missed out on bowl eligibility after a six-game losing streak marred their season.

Gregg Popovich to miss two Spurs games after procedure

The San Antonio Spurs announced Friday that coach Gregg Popovich has undergone a minor medical procedure and will miss the team’s next two games.

Popovich, 73, did not coach the Spurs’ Friday night home game against the New Orleans Pelicans and also will miss a Sunday home date with the Phoenix Suns. The Spurs then have three days off before their next game, also at home, against the Houston Rockets, when Popovich is expected to return.

Brett Brown is coaching the team in Popovich’s place.

Popovich was at the Spurs’ arena Friday and conducted his normal pregame press availability.

Popovich is the winningest coach in NBA history (1,350). He has led the Spurs to five NBA titles, but the rebuilding franchise entered Friday having lost nine straight games and 14 of the past 15.

NCAAF News: Arkansas QB KJ Jefferson returning in 2023

Quarterback KJ Jefferson announced Friday he will return to play one more season at Arkansas.

Jefferson, who just completed his fourth year at Arkansas as a redshirt junior, was eligible for the NFL draft. He teased the idea of heading to the pros in his social media announcement before declaring his true intentions.

“As for the Arkansas fans, I have always loved playing for you all and the support you have given me is unmatched,” Jefferson wrote.

“With that said, it’s time to fulfill my dreams … and my dreams wouldn’t be complete without one more year on The Hill” — a nickname for Arkansas’ campus.

In 10 games in 2022, Jefferson completed 68.3 percent of his passes for 2,361 yards and 22 touchdowns with only four interceptions. He added 510 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.

He’s thrown for 5,529 yards, 46 touchdowns and nine picks in his career at Arkansas.

Jefferson became the Razorbacks’ starting quarterback in 2021 and guided them to a 9-4 record, including an Outback Bowl victory over Penn State, the program’s first bowl win since 2015.

Arkansas (6-6, 3-5 SEC) is bowl eligible again this season.
