Timberwolves, Thunder to meet with stars on mend

A pair of stars are expected to be missing when the Minnesota Timberwolves play host to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday at Minneapolis.

The Timberwolves are working to adjust their game plan for extended life without Karl-Anthony Towns, who came away with a right calf strain in Monday’s loss to the Washington Wizards that will keep him out four-to-six weeks.

Oklahoma City doesn’t figure to be without Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for that long, but their leading scorer missed Wednesday’s victory over the San Antonio Spurs after he came away with a left hip contusion in Monday’s road loss to the New Orleans Pelicans.

Without Towns, Minnesota figures to lean heavily on third-year shooting guard Anthony Edwards, who had 29 points, five assists, five steals, three blocks and just one turnover in Wednesday’s 109-101 home win over the Memphis Grizzlies.

“It’s energy. When he plays with great energy, it pulsates through our guys,” Timberwolves coach Chris Finch said of Edwards. “He makes big plays. He makes plays that can swing a game. He’s always had a great sense of timing.”

Finch said Edwards’ leadership role had been expanding even before Towns’ injury.

“His voice in the locker room is growing and growing, and it’s great to see and much needed for this team. He’s got it in him,” Finch said. “He’s an extremely likable teammate, everything believes that when you have him on the floor, he’s going to do great things, and now he’s learning how to back it up with some words to help his teammates as well.”

While Minnesota has players like Edwards and Rudy Gobert to fill the void with Towns out, the Thunder are not quite as equipped to succeed without Gilgeous-Alexander. The guard is averaging 31.1 points and 6.1 assists per game, while reaching the free-throw line 9.3 times per game – all career highs.

Before missing Wednesday’s game, Gilgeous-Alexander had only missed one game this season – the Thunder’s 116-106 home loss to Minnesota on Oct. 23.

Oklahoma City coach Mark Daigneault said the Thunder are doing the same things structurally with or without Gilgeous-Alexander.

“Systematically it doesn’t change anything,” Daigneault said. “Certainly personnel wise it does, but systematically it doesn’t.”

If Gilgeous-Alexander can’t play, more of the weight for Oklahoma City’s offense falls on the shoulders of Josh Giddey, who moves into the role as the Thunder’s primary ball-handler.

Without Gilgeous-Alexander against the Timberwolves early in the season, Giddey had 10 points, two rebounds, five assists and four turnovers in 22 minutes.

In Wednesday’s win over the Spurs, Giddey was much better. He had 14 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and no turnovers.

Saturday’s game is the third of four between the teams this season. The first two, both wins by the Timberwolves, came in the season’s first week. Minnesota beat the Thunder at Minneapolis 115-108 in the season opener for both teams.

The Timberwolves are likely to be without Taurean Prince, who has missed the last four games with a shoulder injury. Jaden McDaniels, who has missed the last three games with an illness, and Jordan McLaughlin, who has missed five with a calf injury, both practiced Friday.

NFL News: Lions first-round WR Jameson Williams could debut Sunday

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell needs another day to weigh the decision of whether to play rookie first-round wide receiver Jameson Williams for the first time on Sunday.

Williams is officially questionable, but feels his recovery from a torn ACL in the 2022 national championship game is now complete.

Wearing the familiar No. 9 last donned by Matthew Stafford, Williams was a part of the scout team in practice this week. Campbell said the rookie looks every bit the part, but wasn’t ready to commit to playing him Sunday when the Jacksonville Jaguars come to Ford Field.

“Every day it’s been better. He got a pretty good load,” Campbell said of Williams’ practice schedule.

Williams said he’s going “somewhere close to full speed” and doesn’t believe so-called rust is a factor.

“I’m running real fast right now,” Williams said. “I feel real fast. I’m feeling good.”

But Williams said he won’t have much say in the decision on his return date, which could be shifted to next week against the Minnesota Vikings.

Williams, 21, started the season on the NFI list, rehabbing a torn ACL sustained in the College Football Playoff championship game while playing for Alabama against Georgia in January.

Williams was a big-play threat for the Crimson Tide with four touchdown receptions of 70-plus yards. The Lions took on the risk despite his injury, trading up 20 spots to select Williams in the first round.

High-scoring Kings rev up for short-handed Clippers

A Saturday matinee between the Sacramento Kings and host Los Angeles Clippers features a stark contrast in styles, that has led to both teams producing records above .500 thus far into the season.

Sacramento has emerged as one of the surprises of the early NBA campaign. However, the Kings are just emerging from a recent three-game losing skid – their first losing streak since dropping the first four games of the season. They ended the mini drought with a 137-114 home rout of the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday.

Seven Kings scored in double figures in the victory, including Malik Monk with 20 points off the bench. Fellow reserve Terence Davis added 15 points, and Domantas Sabonis neared a triple-double against his former team with 11 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Harrison Barnes led Sacramento with 22 points.

“We needed that win, especially the way we’d been playing the past couple games,” Monk said, according to Sacramento Fox 40. “We lost our pace (during the losing streak). We were able to pick it up today.”

During the Kings’ seven-game winning streak that preceded the three-game swoon, they scored at least 120 points in all but one of the victories. Sacramento ranked second in the NBA in scoring, entering play Friday, with an average of 119.9 points per game.

Successfully pushing the tempo could prove central to Sacramento’s prospects on Saturday against a Clippers team that had the league’s lowest point-per-game average through Dec. 1 at 107.2. Los Angeles ranks among the top defensive teams, however, holding opponents to 107.8 points per game.

The Clippers are returning home Saturday for a one-game layover amid a stretch when they play six of seven games on the road. Los Angeles kicked off the road swing Tuesday with a 118-112 victory at Portland, but dropped the second half of a back-to-back Wednesday in a 125-112 loss at Utah.

The Clippers came into Wednesday’s matchup with the Jazz already down All-Stars Paul George and Kawhi Leonard. George last played Nov. 19 due to a hamstring tendon strain behind his right knee, while Leonard’s return to the lineup has been cut short since Nov. 23 due to an ankle injury.

Norman Powell – who paced the Clippers with 32 points in the win at Portland – sat against Utah due to a groin injury. Powell, George, Leonard and Luke Kennard (calf) are all listed as day-to-day ahead of Saturday’s game.

John Wall came off the bench to lead Los Angeles with 26 points in Wednesday’s loss, while Moussa Diabate and Brandon Boston Jr. added 11 and 10 points respectively. Diabate and Boston, as well as Jason Preston, who scored two points in 3:29 on Wednesday, were call-ups from the Clippers’ G League squad.

The youngsters could continue to provide depth with Los Angeles facing roster uncertainty.

“We have a veteran team and those guys have done a great job in the G League,” Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said. “Sometimes you’ve got to reward the young guys for playing well, to let them know that we do see what you’re doing, and we recognize that you are playing in the G League but you’re doing some good things.”

NFL News: Bears QB Justin Fields removed from injury report, to start vs. Packers

Justin Fields was removed from the injury report and reinstalled as the starting quarterback of the Chicago Bears on Friday.

Fields cleared the required steps to return from a left shoulder injury, established by the Bears’ medical team and coaching staff, in time for a second matchup this season with Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

Head coach Matt Eberflus said this week Fields would play if he’s “100 percent ready” after Chicago turned to backup Trevor Siemian last week. Siemian was moved to injured reserve on Friday after opting for surgery to repair an oblique injury, Eberflus confirmed.

“It’s just progress. Mobility and strength,” Eberflus said of Fields’ progress. “He feels good. Had a good practice again (Friday). We’re excited where he is. … He feels like he’s 100 percent, ready to go. When you get your starting quarterback back, and he’s electric like that, obviously it’s a big boost in the arm.”

Fields has passed for 1,642 yards, 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 11 games this season. He has scored seven touchdowns on the ground and ranks sixth in the NFL with 834 rushing yards.

The Bears (3-9) and Packers (4-8) entered the week with QB questions.

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers (ribs) was unable to finish the Week 12 loss at Philadelphia, but he will start at Soldier Field this week after saying he improved throughout the week. He did not receive an injury designation on Friday.

Green Bay ruled out left tackle David Bakhtiari, who underwent an emergency appendectomy. Safety Darnell Savage (foot) is doubtful after leaving Sunday’s game against Philadelphia and not practicing this week.

Also, safety Jaquan Brisker (concussion), cornerback Kyler Gordon (concussion) and offensive tackle Larry Borom (ankle, knee) will miss the game for the Bears.

Knicks aim to subdue Luka Doncic, Mavericks

With nearly identical records and a similarly up-and-down 10-game stretch in the rearview mirror, the New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks will take the court Saturday afternoon with the same goal in mind.

The Knicks will continue to face top-flight competition Saturday when they host NBA leading scorer Luka Doncic and the Mavericks.

Both teams endured six-point defeats in their most recent games. The Knicks fell to the Milwaukee Bucks, 109-103, on Wednesday night, while the visiting Mavericks lost to the Detroit Pistons, 131-125, in overtime on Thursday.

The loss to the Bucks dropped the Knicks to 4-6 in their last 10 games, a span in which they’ve been victimized in defeat by superstars such as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Stephen Curry, Ja Morant and Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Gilgeous-Alexander scored 37 points in the Oklahoma City Thunder’s 145-135 win on Nov. 13, while Curry had a double-double (24 points, 10 assists) in the Golden State Warriors’ 111-101 win five nights later. Morant posted a triple-double (27 points, 14 assists, 10 rebounds) and scored the game-winning basket off his own blocked shot with 13.9 seconds left in the Memphis Grizzlies’ 127-123 win on Sunday night, three nights before Antetokounmpo finished with 37 points and 13 rebounds for the Bucks.

“Sometimes, it’s a bad bounce,” Knicks guard RJ Barrett said. “The Memphis one, (Morant) got blocked, he got the ball back, he put it in, Something like that — sometimes, it doesn’t go your way.”

The Knicks seemed to get a break when Antetokounmpo fouled out as the Bucks held a 103-102 lead with a minute left, but Grayson Allen sank a tie-breaking 3-pointer with 30.9 seconds left as New York fell to 10-12.

The Mavericks’ current 4-6 stretch includes a 124-115 loss to the Bucks on Sunday in which Allen sank his first seven 3-pointers for Milwaukee.

The Mavericks seemed to get back on the right track by snapping a four-game losing streak on Tuesday. Doncic (41 points, 12 rebounds, 12 assists) had a triple-double in a 116-113 win over the Warriors.

But Dallas frittered away an opportunity Thursday against the Pistons, who are 6-18 and in the thick of the race to finish with the best odds at landing French teenage sensation Victor Wembanyama. The Mavericks forced overtime by erasing an eight-point deficit late in the fourth quarter and led by four early in the extra session before Detroit finished on a 12-2 run.

While the Mavericks have allowed 108.7 points per game, the loss Thursday marked the third time in the last five games they’ve given up at least 124 points. Dallas surrendered more than 124 points just once in its first 16 games.

In addition, the Mavericks were outrebounded 52-30 on Thursday and have been outrebounded nine times in their last 10 games as they’ve fallen to 10-11 overall.

“Our team defense has to be better,” Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd said. “We have to help each other. We’re giving up a lot of rebounds. It comes down to effort and that’s something that we’ll talk about (Friday).”

NFL News: Drew Brees struck by lightning? Just a marketing ploy

Retired NFL great Drew Brees is just fine and the center of an apparent marketing ploy that had social media humming on Friday.

Reports emerged overnight that Brees apparently had been stuck by lightning while filming a promotion for PointsBet USA in Venezuela. Grainy video was posted to Twitter that showed a film crew, with Brees on a television monitor, scurrying about with thunder heard in the background and lightning in the area. After a loud clap of thunder, the video went dark.

PointsBet USA said it was monitoring reports that he was struck by lightning.

“We are aware of the media coverage regarding PointsBet brand ambassador Drew Brees,” PointsBet USA posted to its official Twitter account. “We are in communication with Brees’ team and will continue to monitor events throughout the coming hours. At this stage we will not be making any further comment.”

But an hour later, the company did have something else to say. The lightning report turned out to be a gimmick to drum up interest in the sportsbook’s “lightning bets” promotion.

“Time to let you in on a little fun we’ve had with @drewbrees guys. He’s alive and well and ‘buzzing’ for a weekend of free bets. Keep your eyes on our channels all weekend for bet drops for US vs. Netherlands, College Football and NFL,” PointsBet tweeted.

In an accompanying video, Brees said he was “buzzing” with excitement about the free lightning bets.

Brees tweeted on Tuesday that he was heading to “a top-secret location later this week” to shoot a new promotional video for PointsBet USA. He signed with the sportsbook in July 2021.

Brees, 43, retired following the 2020 season — his 20th in the NFL. He threw for 80,358 yards and 571 touchdowns — second only to Tom Brady in both categories — for the San Diego Chargers and New Orleans Saints. A 13-time Pro Bowl selection, he led the Saints to a win in Super Bowl XLIV.

MLS News: CF Montreal sign homegrown M Nathan Saliba to 2-year deal

0

CF Montreal re-signed homegrown midfielder Nathan Saliba to a two-year contract through 2024 on Friday with club options in both 2025 and 2026.

Saliba, 18, has yet to make his MLS regular-season debut, but did play for CF Montreal’s under-23 team last season. He scored four goals in seven games, including five starts.

Saliba also made a CONCACAF Champions League appearance for the club as a substitute in 2020.

After he joined the CF Montreal academy in 2017, Saliba signed his first professional contract with the club in December 2020. As part of his development, he was selected for Canada’s team that played in Paris in 2016 for the Danone Nations Cup, which is for players ages 10-12.

MLB News: Rangers sign ace Jacob deGrom to five-year contract

Superstar right-handed pitcher Jacob deGrom signed a five-year contract to join the Texas Rangers on Friday.

ESPN reported that the deal is worth $185 million with a sixth-year option that would increase the deal to $222 million overall. The Rangers did not release financial details but confirmed the signing.

“Over a number of seasons, Jacob has been a standout major league pitcher, and he gives us a dominant performer at the top of our rotation,” Rangers general manager Chris Young said in a statement. “One of our primary goals this offseason is to strengthen our starting pitching, and we are adding one of the best.”

The agreement takes deGrom away from the only MLB club he’s ever played for, the New York Mets. He was a two-time Cy Young Award winner (2018, 2019) and four-time National League All-Star with the Mets as he built his reputation as the most dangerous pitcher in baseball.

deGrom has an 82-57 record and a 2.52 ERA in his nine-year MLB career. He has posted 1,607 strikeouts, leading the National League in 2019 and 2020.

The 34-year-old has battled multiple injury concerns in recent years, missing the first four months of the 2022 season with a stress reaction in his throwing shoulder and dealing with a UCL sprain in his elbow the year before.

The reported deal would be the fourth-largest contract value for a pitcher behind only the New York Yankees’ Gerrit Cole, the Washington Nationals’ Stephen Strasburg and the Los Angeles Dodgers’ David Price.

MLB News: Reports: Red Sox reach 2-year, $17.5M deal with RHP Chris Martin

The Boston Red Sox and right-handed reliever Chris Martin have agreed to a two-year, $17.5 million deal, according to multiple reports.

The deal’s completion is contingent on a physical.

The 36-year-old Martin has been a journeyman throughout his career, but his stock rose after he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers prior to the trading deadline last July and went 3-1 with a 1.46 ERA in 26 appearances. He struck out 34 and gave up just 12 hits and one walk over 24 2/3 innings.

Before the trade, Martin went 1-0 with a 4.31 ERA in 34 appearances for the Chicago Cubs. He allowed 38 hits and four walks and fanned 40 in 31 1/3 innings.

In seven big league seasons, Martin is 9-16 with a 3.84 ERA in 269 relief appearances for the Colorado Rockies, New York Yankees, Texas Rangers, Atlanta Braves, Cubs and Dodgers. He has a 1.88 postseason ERA in 16 appearances with the Braves (14) and Dodgers (two).

MLB News: Mariners agree to trade OF Jesse Winker to Brewers for 2B Kolten Wong

Second baseman Kolten Wong is headed to the Seattle Mariners in a trade for outfielder Jesse Winker and third baseman Abraham Toro, who would go to the Milwaukee Brewers in a deal awaiting commissioner approval, per multiple reports.

Wong, 31, is a two-time Gold Glove winner and signed a one-year contract extension at the end of the 2022 season. He hit .251 with 15 home runs, 47 RBIs and 17 stolen bases last season with the Brewers, which was his second in Milwaukee.

Winker has one year remaining before he’s eligible for free agency and hit .219 with a .344 on-base percentage with the Mariners in 2022. Winker, 29, hit .288 in his career over five seasons before being acquired from the Cincinnati Reds by the Mariners.

In 10 MLB seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals and Brewers, Wong has a .261 batting average with 82 home runs and 117 stolen bases.

Toro, 25, was once regarded as a top prospect with the Houston Astros. A utility infielder, he hit .206 in four MLB seasons split between the AL West clubs.
