NFL News: Clinging to slim playoff hopes, Lions, Jaguars clash

The Jacksonville Jaguars and host Detroit Lions bring identical records into their matchup on Sunday.

At 4-7, both teams would probably need to run the table to challenge for a playoff spot. Yet in different ways, they each enter the contest with a renewed sense of confidence.

Jacksonville rallied from a nine-point, fourth-quarter deficit to beat the Baltimore Ravens 28-27 last Sunday. Trevor Lawrence hasn’t often resembled a No. 1 overall pick, but he looked like a star in the making during the comeback.

Lawrence led the Jaguars on a 10-play, 75-drive in the final two minutes, culminating with a touchdown pass to Marvin Jones and a two-point conversion toss to Zay Jones.

It’s a much bigger longshot for the Jaguars to go on a winning streak and join the playoff race, but coach Doug Pederson won’t discount that possibility.

“I’ve been around this league a long time. Anything is possible,” Pederson said. “Detroit’s in a situation where they could go on a little run here and affect the outcome of their season too. Yes, we understand that it’s a one-game season, the importance of this game and we’ve got some really good opponents down the stretch here.”

Lawrence passed for a season-high 321 yards and three touchdowns against the Ravens.

“I see a player who’s gotten better, particularly over the last three or four weeks,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said. “That last drive last week was — that was big. Every week I feel like, man, if you’re not careful, he’ll pick you apart.”

The Lions had a three-game winning streak halted in their annual Thanksgiving Day game but earned some national respect in the process. Buffalo, one of the league’s top teams, needed a field goal in the closing seconds to escape with a 28-25 win.

“Oh, it’s turned (the corner),” quarterback Jared Goff said. “We’ve turned and have won three of our last four and felt like we had a good chance to win last week and feel like we can play with anybody. So, yeah, we’re there and certainly a different team than we were earlier in the year and can play with anybody and beat anybody.”

Goff hasn’t thrown an interception over the last three games. He’s thrown 15 touchdown passes compared to three interceptions in six home starts this season.

“The offensive line is really good at protecting Jared,” Pederson said. “He’s done a nice job of distributing the football. They’ve been scoring points. It hasn’t been one of their issues. They’re putting points on the board and (gone on) a little bit of a hot streak recently.”

Jamaal Williams has emerged as a premier goal-line back, scoring an NFL-best 13 touchdowns.

Goff doesn’t feel like the playoffs are out of reach, despite the team’s record.

“Last year, you think about this time last year, and you’re kind of out of it. Just human nature, it’s hard to get going every day,” he said. It’s hard to get yourself ready to go on Sundays and even throughout the week, Wednesday through Friday. Now, we’re in the mix.”

Detroit’s biggest injury concern entering the game is offensive tackle Penei Sewell, who missed Wednesday’s practice due to an ankle injury. The Jaguars top running back, Travis Etienne Jr., was limited in practice on Wednesday due to a foot injury.

Jayson Tatum scores 49 as Celtics down Heat

Jayson Tatum scored a season-high 49 points, and the Boston Celtics extended their winning streak to five games with a 134-121 victory over the visiting Miami Heat on Wednesday night.

The loss dropped Miami’s road record to 2-8. The Celtics are unbeaten in their last 10 home games.

Tatum made eight of his 12 3-pointers, and also had a game-high 11 rebounds.

Jaylen Brown added 26 points for the Celtics. Malcolm Brogdon finished with 21.

All five Miami starters scored in double figures. Bam Adebayo and Max Strus led the way with 23 points apiece. Tyler Herro finished with 22, Kyle Lowry tossed in 14 and Caleb Martin had 10. Strus scored 19 points in the third quarter.

Adebayo was ejected after he was called for two technical fouls with 24 seconds to play.

The Heat lost despite making a season-high 18 3-pointers. Boston was 22-for-45 from behind the 3-point arc.

Miami was within three points midway through the fourth quarter, but the Celtics regained a 10-point lead, 131-121, on a Tatum 3-pointer with 2:21 to play.

Miami was without Jimmy Butler, who has missed the last seven games with a lingering knee injury. Butler is a six-time All-Star who is averaging 20.9 points, 6.6 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 1.8 steals per contest in 13 games this season.

Miami, which trailed 102-96 after three quarters, entered the game on a three-game winning streak.

Boston is now 14-1 in its last 15 contests. The Celtics improved to 11-1 at home.

Boston led 20-6 in the first quarter — its largest lead of the first half — but Miami used a 21-5 run to take a 27-25 lead. The Heat later had a 49-47 advantage, but Boston regained control with a 12-0 run that was capped by a Brown layup. The Celtics led 68-60 at halftime.

Tatum led all players in points (28) and rebounds (six) in the first half.

The teams will meet again Friday night in Boston.

NFL News: Lamar Jackson leaves practice with quad issue

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson left Wednesday’s practice early after sustaining a quad injury during the session.

Jackson was officially listed as limited, marking the third consecutive week he has appeared on the injury report. He missed the Wednesday practice last week with a hip injury.

A Ravens spokesperson said Jackson left practice early to get treatment from trainers. As a result, Jackson did not meet with reporters after practice as scheduled and will meet with the media Thursday or Friday, the team said.

Jackson has played in all 11 games this season after missing five games with injuries in 2021. Previously, he had missed only one game due to injury in his first 57 games in the NFL. Jackson is 12th in the league in rushing yards with 755. He’s thrown for 2,231 yards and 17 touchdowns against seven interceptions.

The Ravens, 7-4 and coming off a frustrating loss at Jacksonville last week, host the Denver Broncos (3-8) on Sunday.

In addition to Jackson, TE Isaiah Likely (ankle), S Kyle Hamilton (knee) and OT Ronnie Stanley (ankle) were also limited Wednesday. Three players did not participate due to illness — TE Nick Boyle, OT Daniel Faalele and OT Patrick Mekari. Cornerback Marlon Humphrey missed practice with an ankle injury.

Trae Young dominates as Hawks put away Magic

Trae Young had a double-double by halftime and finished with 30 points and 14 assists to help the visiting Atlanta Hawks end a three-game losing streak with a 125-108 win over the Orlando Magic on Wednesday.

Young had 15 points and 10 rebounds at the half and scored another 15 in the third quarter. He was 12-for-23 from the field, 4-for-5 from the line, matched his season high for assists and committed only two turnovers.

The Hawks also got 27 points from Dejounte Murray and 20 points and 12 rebounds from Clint Capela.

Atlanta had to play the second half without John Collins, who hurt his left ankle while landing after an alley-oop pass and was limited to 17 minutes, and De’Andre Hunter, who left with soreness in his left side and played only seven minutes.

The Hawks got a lift from Jarrett Culver, a two-way contract player, who came off the bench to score nine points and grab a career-high 12 rebounds.

Orlando got 22 points from Franz Wagner and 20 points from Paolo Banchero. The Magic lost their sixth straight game.

Atlanta, which had been having trouble shooting from the perimeter, took the ball inside in the first half. The Hawks led 70-50 at halftime and 36 of those points came in the paint. One of the biggest beneficiaries was Capela, who had 12 points on perfect 6-for-6 shooting, the 10th time in his career that he’s scored 10-plus points on a perfect mark in a single quarter. Atlanta finished with 62 points in the paint.

The Hawks took a 13-point lead when A.J. Griffin’s floater made it 34-21 at 1:27 and Atlanta led 38-27 after one quarter. Orlando never got closer than eight points and the Hawks went on a 15-2 run in the second quarter to stretch the lead to 18. Atlanta led 70-50 at halftime.

Atlanta is 2-0 against Orlando and has won three in a row against the Magic.

Atlanta returns home on Friday to play the Denver Nuggets. Orlando travels to Cleveland on Friday.

NFL News: Injured QBs look to return for Bears’ meeting with Packers

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers missed Wednesday’s practice with thumb and rib injuries, while Chicago Bears counterpart Justin Fields was limited as he deals with a separated non-throwing shoulder.

Will the pair oppose one another Sunday in Chicago as they did during the Packers’ 27-10 home romp in Week 2?

Things look to be trending that way, but it may not be official until shortly before kickoff at Soldier Field.

What is certain: the Packers (4-8) and Bears (3-9) are reeling as they renew the NFL’s most-contested rivalry.

Green Bay has lost seven of eight, while Chicago enters on a five-game skid, including three losses by one possession.

Given the Packers’ success with Rodgers under center over the past decade-plus, it’s the rare meeting between the teams in which there’s more at stake with draft positioning than playoff seeding.

Still, Green Bay is harboring slim postseason hopes, as well, needing to win out while hoping for help.

“I think we’re always trying to develop and look for opportunities to get some guys in there that you might not know about, but I think right now the focus is 100 percent on winning this football game and doing whatever it takes,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said.

The Packers have won the past seven games in the series. Their bid to extend the run to eight figures to include Rodgers, as LaFleur said his expectation is for Rodgers to play in Week 13.

Rodgers left in the third quarter of the team’s 40-33 loss at Philadelphia last week with injured ribs. Rodgers, who already had been playing with a broken thumb, said he struggled to breathe and move his upper body.

While the Packers scored in the 30s for just the second time this season, it wasn’t enough as Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts rushed for 157 yards while throwing for 153 more and two touchdowns.

If healthy, Fields, a developing dual threat who rushed for 410 yards from Weeks 9-11, surely would present matchup nightmares for a scuffling Packers defense. Fields has recorded both a passing and rushing touchdown in five straight games, but missed last week’s loss to the New York Jets.

“We’d be foolish not to plan for Justin,” LaFleur said. “Because if you don’t, you will get gutted. That quarterback run game they have is pretty spectacular, and it doesn’t even always show up just in the run game, but just on his ability to drop back and if nothing is there to find a window and an escape lane and make you pay in that regard.”

Fields said he is “feeling better each and every day.”

Bears coach Matt Eberflus announced Wednesday that safety Eddie Jackson (foot) would miss the rest of the season. He was among several Bears injured in the Jets game.

Injuries to offensive linemen Riley Reiff (back) and Larry Borom (ankle/knee) may create an opening for right tackle Alex Leatherwood to make his first start as a Bear.

“We are excited and intrigued to see where it goes because he is a heck of an athlete at that position and we’ll see where it goes from there,” Eberflus said.

Cavaliers miss only one shot in 2nd quarter in rout over 76ers

Darius Garland scored 21 points and handed out nine assists while Donovan Mitchell added 18 as the torrid-shooting Cleveland Cavaliers routed the visiting Philadelphia 76ers, 113-85, in a matchup of two injury-plagued teams Wednesday.

With Jarrett Allen missing his third straight game with a back injury, Lamar Stevens out with an illness and Kevin Love sitting with a thumb fracture, Caris LeVert picked up the slack off the bench with a game-high 22 points. Center Evan Mobley added 16 points and eight rebounds while Isaac Okoro scored 11.

Cleveland closed out November by improving to 9-1 this season at home, which is where they will play 10 of their next 13 games. Eight of those wins were by double digits.

The Sixers were led by star Joel Embiid, who made just six of his 16 shots from the field for 19 points. Embiid missed four games due to a left mid-foot sprain and scored 30 in a win over Atlanta on Monday before being held 13 points below his season average on Wednesday.

Philadelphia’s only other double-digit scorer was Shake Milton, who had 14 points. Tobias Harris was held to just three points and missed all seven shots from the field for the Sixers, who saw their three-game win streak come to an end. Philadelphia played again without injured starters Tyrese Maxey and James Harden.

Before Wednesday, Philadelphia’s worst margin of defeat this season was 10 points.

The Sixers jumped out to a 9-2 lead before the Cavaliers answered with the next 14 points. The Cavaliers took a 25-21 lead after one quarter before going on a scorching tear in the second period.

The Cavaliers connected on 16 of 17 shots from the field, including a perfect 5-for-5 from 3-point range. The 94.1 percent shooting in the second quarter helped the Cavaliers race out to a 69-48 halftime lead. Cleveland finished making 45 of 74 shots, good for a season-high 60.8 percent for the game.

Cleveland’s scorching shooting continued early in the third quarter as they built their lead to 32 points, 80-48, on Garland’s finger roll with 7:53 left in the period. LeVert found Cedi Osman for a perfectly executed reverse layup just before the third-quarter buzzer to give the Cavaliers a 90-66 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Due to the absence of Allen, Stevens and Love, Cleveland featured its 10th different starting lineup with forward Mamadi Diakite getting his first start of the season, and his first since Feb. 5, 2022, with Oklahoma City. He scored six points in 23 minutes.

NFL News: Rams DT Aaron Donald, QB Matthew Stafford out Week 13

Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald will not play Sunday due to a high-ankle sprain that could lead to Los Angeles shutting him down for the rest of the season.

Donald, 31, has never missed an NFL game due to injury, meaning the seven-time All-Pro would be sitting for the first time Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks. Donald missed two games in 2017 due to a contract holdout.

“That’s what makes Aaron, Aaron,” McVay said. “He’s unbelievable. I mean to be able to play through that, the toughness, everything that he embodies is what you love about Aaron.”

Donald was injured in the first quarter last week but remained in the game, a 26-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

With a five-game losing streak and a 3-8 overall record, Los Angeles has only one win since Sept. 25. A rash of injuries isn’t helping the Rams’ mood.

Wide receivers Cooper Kupp and Allen Robinson II are on injured reserve, and quarterback Matthew Stafford (concussion) played only two of the team’s four games in November.

McVay said Wednesday it was “safe to say” Stafford, 34, would miss Week 13.

NWSL News: Spirit re-sign M Marissa Sheva for 2023

The Washington Spirit re-signed midfielder Marissa Sheva for the 2023 season on Wednesday.

Sheva, 25, appeared in eight games (three starts) for the NWSL club in 2022. She totaled 302 minutes of action.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be back for 2023,” she said in a team news release. “I love this team and the vision for the future of this club is world-class. I’m so thankful for the opportunity!”

Upon joining the club in June 2022, Sheva was classified as a COVID-19 replacement player, an injury replacement player and a national team replacement player before eventually signing on as a full roster member in August.

“Marissa provided valuable depth to the Spirit roster this season and we are excited to keep her with the club for another year,” said Mark Krikorian, the Spirit’s president of soccer operations. “We look forward to Marissa’s continued development as a player and contributions to the team.”

Clippers F Kawhi Leonard (ankle) ruled out vs. Jazz

Los Angeles Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard was ruled out of Wednesday night’s game against the host Utah Jazz due to his right ankle injury.

It will be the fifth consecutive game Leonard has missed. He has played in just five games this season, largely due to soreness in his surgically repaired right knee.

Leonard, a two-time NBA Finals MVP, is averaging 10.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists.

Also, Clippers star Paul George is sitting out his sixth successive game due to a hamstring injury, and Luke Kennard will miss his eighth in a row with a calf injury.

Also ailing for Los Angeles is swingman Norman Powell, who scored 22 of his season-high 32 points in the fourth quarter of Tuesday’s 118-112 comeback win over the host Portland Trail Blazers. Powell is listed as doubtful with a left groin strain.

Reggie Jackson, who fell hard to the floor late in the second quarter Tuesday, is questionable with a lower back contusion.

For Utah, veterans Mike Conley (leg) and Rudy Gay (hand) will miss the game.

NFL News: Bengals approach full strength as RB Joe Mixon, WR Ja’Marr Chase hit field

Running back Joe Mixon participated in Wednesday’s practice with the Cincinnati Bengals after being idle last week due to a concussion.

The Bengals (7-4) host the Kansas City Chiefs (9-2) in a rematch of the AFC Championship game won by Cincinnati, 27-24 in overtime. The teams also met in a 34-31 shootout in Cincinnati won by the Bengals in Week 17 last season.

Mixon has 158 carries for 605 yards and six touchdowns this season with 41 receptions for 314 yards and two scores as a receiver.

Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase also continued to progress toward playing in Week 13, which would be his first game since the Bengals’ 35-17 win over the Atlanta Falcons on Oct. 23. After limping off the field, Chase returned to play in the second half, then was shut down until limited practice participation last week.

Mixon also missed the Week 12 win over the Tennessee Titans due to a concussion. Head coach Zac Taylor said Mixon remains in concussion protocol, but the final step was participation in the workout Wednesday.

Chase, 22, has 47 catches, 605 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns over seven games. He led the Bengals in all three categories before his injury, with Tee Higgins since passing him in receptions (57) and yards (826).

Chase made the Pro Bowl as a rookie in 2021, catching 81 passes for 1,455 yards and 13 touchdowns in 17 starts.

In the Week 17 matchup with the Chiefs, Chase caught 11 passes for 266 yards and three touchdowns.
