FIFA News: Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino out as Mexico’s coach after WC exit

Gerardo “Tata” Martino announced that his contract expired once Mexico was eliminated from the World Cup on Wednesday and that he is no longer the coach of El Tri.

Mexico scored its first goals of the tournament in a 2-1 victory over Saudi Arabia, but it failed to advance to the knockout stages due to goal differential against Poland.

“I am the first responsible for this terrible disappointment and frustration that we have,” Martino said after the match. “As the person in charge, it causes a lot of sadness, I fully assume responsibility for this great failure.

“My contract ended as soon as the referee blew the final whistle and there is nothing more to be done.”

It is the first time since 1978 that Mexico has failed to advance out of the group stage in a World Cup, not including the 1990 tournament that the country was banned from.

Martino took over El Tri in 2019 after leading the Atlanta United to the MLS Cup title. However, Mexico struggled against the United States and Canada during World Cup qualifying, losing to both teams on the road and drawing at home.

Mexico also lost to the United States in the finals of the CONCACAF Nations League and the Gold Cup.

Criticism of Martino continued to mount as Mexico managed no goals and only one point through its first two games in Qatar. Meanwhile, former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez was left off Mexico’s World Cup roster.

Martino previously coached the national team for his native Argentina as well as for Paraguay. The Athletic reported in July that he had already decided to part with El Tri after the World Cup.

He ends his tenure with Mexico with a win-draw-loss record of 42-12-12 across all competitions.

‘Special’ Luka Doncic, Mavericks prepared for Pistons

The way Luka Doncic is playing against better opponents, it seems almost unfair to unleash the triple-double machine against the team with the NBA’s worst record.

The Dallas Mavericks superstar recorded his third 40-point triple-double of the season in a 116-113 win over defending champion Golden State on Tuesday. The Mavs travel to Detroit to face the downtrodden Pistons on Thursday.

Doncic piled up 41 points, 12 rebounds, 12 assists and four steals for his 51st career triple-double. He tied Dirk Nowitzki for second place in franchise history with 20 career games of 40 or more points. Mark Aguirre is first with 22.

“I just participated and gave it everything I’ve got,” Doncic said. “I was really tired at the end — I’m not going to lie. I think we deserved this win.”

Doncic is averaging a league-leading 33.5 points to go with 8.8 rebounds and 8.6 assists despite being a marked man every game. With the loss of Jalen Brunson in free agency, the Mavs don’t have an obvious second option.

Spencer Dinwiddie is second on the team at 17.0 points per game. He was ejected in the fourth quarter against the Warriors when he was assessed a flagrant-2 foul for elbowing Jordan Poole in the face.

A Doncic basket gave Dallas a three-point lead and the Mavericks hung on as the Warriors’ Klay Thompson missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer in the final second.

“Look, he’s one of the best in the world, and that’s what he does,” Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd said of Doncic. “I said this earlier, some of us in this room can take him for granted. The man is special, the guy loves competition. And when you have a triple-double like that it’s not easy because he’s marked once he pulls up in his car. You’re going to have a double team or they’re not going to let him play.”

Veteran guard Kemba Walker could make his Dallas debut on Thursday. Walker was waived by the Pistons after being acquired from New York in an offseason trade. Walker signed a one-year contract with the Mavericks on Tuesday.

The Pistons have won only five games this season and carry a three-game losing streak into the contest. They were demolished by the Knicks 140-110 on Tuesday.

That was their second home game after a lengthy six-game road trip.

“We contributed to some of (the Knicks’ hot shooting) with our soft defense,” Pistons coach Dwane Casey said. “I think (Tuesday’s) game was a delayed reaction from the West Coast trip. I expected this game on Monday (against Cleveland). We came out with some fight. (Tuesday), we didn’t. They got a dunk on the first play of the game and it started from there. It was a stinker.”

With top player Cade Cunningham sidelined indefinitely due to a shin injury, the Pistons are finding it difficult to stay competitive. Several other key players have missed games due to injury, including Cunningham’s rookie backcourt partner Jaden Ivey. He also missed the Knicks game due to knee soreness.

Isaiah Stewart returned to action on Tuesday after missing seven games due to a toe injury and led the club with 19 points, including a career-best five 3-pointers. Reserve guard Alec Burks did not score in 15 minutes of action after contributing 16 or more points in the previous six games.

NFL News: Cowboys hit stride, Colts summon pride for stretch run

Jeff Saturday and the Colts chase dimming playoff hopes to Dallas, where the Cowboys pursue division title hopes entering December.

Dallas (8-3) hits Week 13 with momentum from a Thanksgiving Day win over the New York Giants that came after the Cowboys went on the road and manhandled the Minnesota Vikings, 40-3.

“Our real focus is on the fact that we haven’t played this team. There’s a lot of new faces since the last time we lined up and competed (in 2018),” Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said.

An opportunity to continue building could be in place before a pivotal NFC East game with Philadelphia on Dec. 18. The next three opponents for Dallas — the Colts (4-7-1), Texans (1-9-1) and Jaguars (4-7) — have a combined nine wins and net TD total of -18. The Cowboys are tied with the NFC-leading Eagles (10-1) with a plus-14 net TD total.

Installed as interim head coach of the Colts on Nov. 7, Saturday has a short week to rally Indianapolis (4-7-1) coming out of a Monday night loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers that dropped the team to 10th position in the overall AFC standings.

Saturday said he spent significant time speaking to his players about professionalism, speaking from his “worst years” with a 2-14 record alongside Peyton Manning in 2011.

“It was a miserable experience from the winning and losing standpoint,” Saturday said. “I encouraged guys — this will be a defining moment in your life. Do you love ball? Because it’ll show up. Do you love the work, do you love the process?”

The Indy defense continues to show up. The Colts are sixth in the NFL in pass defense and total defense, yielding 190.6 passing yards per game and 308.9 total yards per game.

They’ve had a vintage Stephon Gilmore at cornerback to thank in large part, considering he hasn’t surrendered a TD pass in 61 targets as the primary defender. The Cowboys and CeeDee Lamb present another test for Gilmore on Sunday. In five games since quarterback Dak Prescott returned from a thumb injury, Lamb has 31 receptions — including 20 first downs, 11 for 20-plus yards — for 448 yards with three TDs.

A miserable third-down rate (36.02 percent, 28th in the NFL) adds to a razor-thin margin for error and at just 15.8 points per game, the Colts place abundant pressure on running back Jonathan Taylor and that rugged defense to keep Indy in games with a throwback approach. Nine of the Colts’ 12 games — including a Week 1 tie with the Texans — were decided by one possession.

McCarthy said Taylor, a “dynamic runner,” is the key for Dallas.

“I’ve been to two college football games the last 30 years — that was one of them, (Wisconsin) against Iowa,” McCarthy said. “We’re spending extra time on him and the run game. … Will not be surprised if he carries it north of 20 (times) against us.”

Colts quarterback Matt Ryan had little time and small windows to throw through facing Pittsburgh’s 3-4 zone defense. Dallas has mixed fronts with heavy zone usage behind a pass rush with 45 sacks and the Cowboys are fourth in the NFL with a turnover margin of plus-5 on the legs of 16 total takeaways. The Colts are tied for last in the NFL with 21 giveaways and 31st in the league with a margin at minus-10.

“Unfortunately I’ve been in this spot before,” Ryan said. “It’s never fun. You want to be driving the ship, you want to be the one where the division is running through it and you’re playing for position and home field advantage.”

While the Colts are rushed out of a Monday loss to get ready, the Cowboys granted extra rest to pass rusher Micah Parsons (knee), who is second in the NFL with 12.0 sacks and fifth with 21 QB hits, and defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence (6.0 sacks, 10 QB hits). Lawrence is playing with a fractured foot and might not practice the rest of the season.

FIFA News: World Cup roundup: Mexico rejected despite win; Poland advances

Mexico won the battle but lost the war.

In a wild ending Wednesday, Mexico defeated Saudi Arabia in Group C, 2-1, but it didn’t win by enough and for the first time since 1978 failed to advance out of the World Cup group stage.

Mexico led 2-0 going into stoppage time at Lusail, Qatar, desperately needing a third goal to advance to the knockout stage; at just a two-goal advantage, they were losing to Poland on fair-play points (yellow cards).

Despite getting 26 shots and 11 on goal, El Tri couldn’t get another goal, and got caught by Salem Al-Dawsari, who scored on a breakaway in stoppage time to ensure Mexico would lose the tiebreaker to Poland on goal differential.

Mexico entered the day needing to win and make up five goals on Poland. They made up four of those goals when Henry Martin (47th minute) and Luis Chavez (52nd) scored early in the second half, and within minutes of each of those goals, Argentina scored twice against Poland.

Saudi Arabia, which started the tournament by defeating Argentina last week, needed to win to advance.

Mexico manager Gerardo “Tata” Martino immediately stepped down after the loss, saying “My contract ended as soon as the referee blew the final whistle.”

–Argentina 2, Poland 0

Second-half goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Julian Alvarez led to a victory over Poland and vaulted Argentina into the knockout stage.

Despite the loss, Poland is also through to the Round of 16 thanks to a one-goal advantage in goal differential over Mexico. Poland and Mexico played to a scoreless tie last week.

Argentina dominated the match to win Group C, completing its recovery from the massive upset to Saudi Arabia in the group stage opener. Argentina will play Australia in the next Round of 16, while Poland earns a match vs. France.

Lionel Messi was denied by Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny on a penalty kick in the first half, but Mac Allister tallied in the 46th minute and Alvarez followed with a goal in the 67th.

–Australia 1, Denmark 0

Mathew Leckie broke the deadlock in the 60th minute and Australia advanced to the last 16 for the first time since 2006 with a 1-0 defeat of Denmark in Group D on Wednesday at Al Wakrah, Qatar.

After Leckie finished off a successful counterattack, Denmark’s last best chance came about 10 minutes later when the Danes were called for a penalty after a foul against Kasper Dolberg. Dolberg, however, was ruled offside.

The Socceroos lost 1-0 to Italy in their only previous appearance in the knockout stages 16 years ago.

Denmark got three saves from Kasper Schmeichel but finished at the bottom of the group with one point.

–Tunisia 1, France 0

Wahbi Khazri’s goal against the defending World Cup champion France was bittersweet as Tunisia was eliminated despite its victory in Doha, Qatar.

Khazri, who was born in France, fought through traffic to score in the 58th minute to give Tunisia just its third win in six World Cup tournaments.

France had already booked its spot in the knockout stage and finished on top of Group D with six points, ahead of runner-up Australia based on goal differential.

MLB News: Report: Yankees make record offer to Aaron Judge

The New York Yankees made a record-setting offer to slugger Aaron Judge, ESPN reported Wednesday.

The offer currently on the table for the free agent outfielder is “in the neighborhood of eight years and $300 million,” per the report.

At $37.5 million per season, that would eclipse the $35.5 million average annual value of Mike Trout’s contract as the largest ever for a position player.

The Yankees could raise that offer if the San Francisco Giants force their hand, per the report. Judge met with the Giants last week, according to MLB.com.

Judge, 30, turned down a seven-year, $213.5 million extension offer from the Yankees in March and went on to hit an American League-record 62 home runs and capture AL Most Valuable Player honors.

In addition to his home run mark, Judge also led the major leagues in RBIs (131), runs (133), on-base percentage (.425) and slugging percentage (.686). He led the AL with 111 walks and ranked second with a .311 batting average. In the field, he did not commit an error.

A California native, Judge is also expected to meet with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The four-time All-Star has 220 home runs and 497 RBIs in 729 games over seven seasons with the Yankees.

NHL News: Pierre Engvall lifts Leafs over Sharks

Pierre Engvall scored the go-ahead goal at 17:33 of the third period and the Toronto Maple Leafs went on to defeat the visiting San Jose Sharks 3-1 Wednesday night.

Engvall scored his third goal of the season from the right circle with assists from Alexander Kerfoot and David Kampf.

Mitchell Marner scored into an empty net with an assist from Kerfoot at 18:49 of the third to match the Toronto team record of 18 straight games with at least one point. Darryl Sittler (1978) and Ed Olcyzk (1989-90) also had 18-game point streaks for the Maple Leafs.

Auston Matthews also scored for the Maple Leafs, who were coming off a 4-0-0 road trip. Ilya Samsonov returned from a knee injury to play in his first game since Nov. 5 and made 23 saves.

Matt Nieto scored for the Sharks, who opened a four-game road trip Tuesday with a 4-0 win over the Montreal Canadiens.

Aaron Dell made his first start for the Sharks this season and stopped 29 shots.

Toronto pressed during the first period, but that left them open to the counterattack that led to three San Jose breakaways. At 19:20 of the first period, Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson hit the goal post on a three-on-two breakout.

Toronto had a 10-7 advantage in shots on goal after one period.

Matthews tipped in his 12th goal of the season off Mac Hollowell’s shot at 4:19 of the second period. Michael Bunting also earned an assist.

Nieto scored his sixth goal of the season at 7:26 of the second on a nine-foot shot from the right of the net. Logan Couture made the pass from behind the goal line and Nick Cicek also earned an assist.

Toronto had a 22-18 edge in shots on goal after two periods.

Toronto center Calle Jarnkrok (groin) left the game in the second period and did not return.

The memory of former Maple Leafs defenseman Borje Salming, who died last week, was honored in a pregame ceremony.

NHL News: Balanced effort pushes Rangers past Senators

Jimmy Vesey, Barclay Goodrow and Chris Kreider each scored to lift the New York Rangers to a 3-1 victory over the host Ottawa Senators on Wednesday.

Ryan Lindgren had three assists after having five in his first 21 games combined this season, while Sammy Blais and Mika Zibanejad each added an assist for the Rangers, who ended a three-game losing streak.

Jaroslav Halak, starting in place of Igor Shesterkin, made 34 saves to pick up his first win as a Ranger after dropping his first six starts, including one in overtime.

Shane Pinto scored, and Cam Talbot made 33 saves for the Senators, who saw a two-game winning streak halted that had been their longest since a season-best four-game winning streak from Oct. 18-24.

Drake Batherson and Nick Holden each had an assist for the Senators.

The Rangers struck first when Talbot failed to make a clean save of Lindgren’s shot from the point, enabling Vesey to pounce on the loose puck and swat it into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead at the 10:34 mark of the first period.

The Rangers doubled their lead with 9:08 left in the second period when Goodrow deflected Lindgren’s shot past Talbot, with Blais also assisting on the play.

Ottawa cut the lead in half less than three minutes later when Pinto’s give-and-go along the boards with Batherson led to Pinto wristing a shot past Halak with 6:13 left in the period, with Holden also getting credited with an assist.

The Rangers extended their lead to 3-1 when Kreider deflected Lindgren’s shot from the point past Talbot with 6:01 left to play, with Zibanejad also assisting on the play.

The Rangers outshot Ottawa 36-35 and went 0-for-2 on the power play, while the Senators went 0-for-3.

After the Rangers and Ottawa meet in New York on Friday, the Rangers host the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday before welcoming the St. Louis Blues on Monday.

The Senators return to Ottawa for a two-game homestand against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday and the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday.

NHL News: Sabres cap furious rally with shootout win over Wings

Jack Quinn scored in the third round of a shootout to lift the Buffalo Sabres to a 5-4 road win over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday.

Quinn’s goal was the only one of the shootout, although David Perron and Dylan Larkin each hit the post on their shootout attempts for Detroit.

Dylan Cozens scored twice for Buffalo, while Oskar Sundqvist also had two goals for Detroit.

The Red Wings were 0-for-7 on the power play and failed to convert on a 2-man advantage they had for 1:27 that started when there was with 2:16 remaining in the game.

Detroit trailed 4-1 in the third period, but tied the game at 4-4 on three goals in a span of 5:40.

Perron made it 4-2 on a goal with 13:09 remaining in the game, and then Sundqvist scored back-to-back goals with 9:19 left and 7:29 remaining to bring the Red Wings back to even.

The Red Wings took an early lead, going up 1-0 just 1:20 into the game when Jonatan Berggren fired a shot from the top of the right face-off circle that got through traffic in front of the Buffalo goal and past Sabres goalie Craig Anderson.

Buffalo tied the game at 1-1 with 15:07 left in the first period on a short-handed goal by Cozens, who poked a loose puck at center ice past Detroit defensemen, caught up to it in the Red Wings zone and got off a shot that beat Detroit goalie Alex Nedeljkovic in between his pads.

Buffalo then took a 2-1 lead with 11:35 left in the first on the first career goal by Mattias Samuelsson, who fired an innocent looking wrist shot that hit Nedeljkovic in the chest, bounced behind him and went into the net.

Cozens scored his second goal with 11:48 remaining in the second to give Buffalo a 3-1 lead, and then Jeff Skinner gave the Sabres a 4-1 lead with 9:43 left in the second on a Buffalo power play.

NHL News: Kings waive struggling goalie Cal Petersen

The Los Angeles Kings put goaltender Cal Petersen on waivers Wednesday, one day after the team’s 9-8 overtime loss to the visiting Seattle Kraken.

Petersen gave up four goals on 16 shots in relief of Jonathan Quick, who allowed five goals on 14 shots. Petersen allowed the decisive goal to Andre Burakovsky 2:08 into overtime.

Petersen, 28, is 5-3-2 with a 3.75 goals-against average in 10 games this season, but he has a woeful .868 save percentage that ranks second worst among the NHL’s 59 qualifiers.

Petersen is in the second season of a three-year, $15 million deal as the backup to Quick, the longtime Kings starting netminder.

Overall, Petersen is 44-42-10 with a 2.92 GAA and .905 save percentage in five seasons with the Kings.

Los Angeles hosts the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday.

NHL News: Kings looking for less chaos as they host Coyotes

After losing a wild 9-8 overtime game to the Seattle Kraken that head coach Todd McLellan called “mass confusion,” the Los Angeles Kings return to action Thursday night when they host the Arizona Coyotes.

The 17 combined goals in Tuesday’s loss to Seattle made it the highest-scoring game of the season and marked just the 12th regular-season game with that many goals in the past 35 years.

“It’s a very, very confusing night for all of us,” McLellan said. “I’m really disappointed that we gave up nine goals, absolutely.

“On the other side of the coin, I’m glad that we fought back, got a point, and scored eight. So it’s mass confusion right now for all of us, and we better figure it out quickly.”

Things got even more confusing on Wednesday when the Kings cancelled their on-ice practice and media availability shortly after waiving goaltender Cal Petersen.

Petersen replaced Jonathan Quick midway through Tuesday’s loss and allowed four goals on just 16 shots. He is 5-3-2 with a 3.75 goals-against average but has a dismal .868 save percentage. He is in the first year of a three-year, $15 million contract that carries a $5 million cap hit for two more years.

Los Angeles had allowed a respectable total of 10 goals in its three previous games (1-1-1) before Tuesday. Quick departed 4:55 into the second period after allowing five goals on 14 Seattle shots.

On the bright side, the Kings continually battled back, scoring five game-tying goals.

They trailed the Kraken 8-6 midway through the third period before they scored twice to tie it and garner a point in the standings by sending the contest into overtime.

“(Tuesday) I feel like every mistake went in our net, every time,” center Phillip Danault said. “I guess it was just that kind of game. I’ve definitely never been a part of one like this. We got a big point, though, we came back and we kept believing in ourselves in the third.

“We have to learn from this,” Danault added, mindful that the Kings are 1-2-3 in their past six games. “If we want to be a winning team and go far in the playoffs, we have to work on it right now.”

Arizona, amid an NHL-record-tying 14-game road trip, has been off since a 4-3 loss at Minnesota on Sunday. This is the 11th game of the trip and before returning home, they will swing through western Canada to play at Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton.

The Coyotes are a respectable 4-4-2 so far on the trip, but they have lost six of their last seven games (1-4-2).

They return to Mullett Arena in Tempe, Ariz., on Dec. 9 and will then play eight of their next 10 games at home.

Arizona made things interesting at the end of Sunday’s loss to the Wild, cutting a 4-1 deficit to one goal thanks to scores by Lawson Crouse with 3:18 left and J.J. Moser with 1:48 remaining. However, the Coyotes managed just one shot on goal the rest of the way.

“We knew we had to make a push late,” said Crouse, who leads the team with 10 goals. “We gave it all we had and came up one short. A good fight back from the group, but one short, so it doesn’t really mean much.”
