After ugly road losses, Jazz, Bulls seek better results

Injuries and illness created an opportunity for Vlatko Cancar to show he can make a valuable contribution to the Denver Nuggets. After three years of mop-up minutes, he is showing he belongs in the rotation.

Cancar played a total of 25 minutes through the first month of the season, but with several players missing he has been pushed into service. He is averaging 23.4 minutes over the last four games and has made key contributions on both offense and defense.

He’ll get more quality time when Denver hosts Houston on Monday night in the first of two home games against the Rockets.

Michael Porter Jr. (heel) and Jeff Green (knee) are not expected to play.

Cancar’s expanded role started at Dallas on Nov. 18 when the Nuggets were without Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon. Denver lost that game by 28 points but beat the Mavericks two nights later, and a big reason was Cancar’s halfcourt heave that ended the second quarter.

In the last two games he has played 60 minutes, averaging 16 points while playing strong defense. He had three blocks in an overtime win at Oklahoma City on Wednesday and was disruptive in a win against the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday.

“(The Thunder game) gave me a lot of confidence, but at the same time, I’m proud of myself just to stay ready for any given opportunity,” Cancar told The Denver Post. “Just to play simple basketball. When you play simple and play to win, you’re going to get rewarded by that.”

Houston brings a two-game winning streak to Denver and has won three of its last five after starting the season 2-12. The Rockets beat Oklahoma City and rallied to beat Atlanta for their first winning streak.

Houston’s wins have come against good teams, including a win at Dallas on Nov. 16.

“I think we’re just tired of losing in general,” Jalen Green said. “We’re coming together and buying in on the defensive side. I think that’s what’s been helping us out.”

The Rockets made key plays down the stretch in the win over the Hawks. Garrison Mathews stole the ball with Houston up one in the final two minutes and drew a foul to give the Rockets more of a cushion.

“Obviously we’re better than we were last year on defense,” Mathews said. “We got more rim protectors, we got better rebounds, all that stuff. Some more athletic guys, that’s super important when it comes to defense.”

Green has taken on challenges against some of the best guards in the NBA — including Trae Young and Steph Curry — and has held his own.

“Coach (Stephen Silas) has been really trusting me to guard the best players every night,” Green said after the win over Atlanta. “That’s a new thing for me this year. Last year I didn’t even get to do any of that. I was probably one of the players that they would attack in the defense. Now they’re not really wanting to use me as a mismatch this year.”

NFL News: Mike White fuels Jets’ rout of slumping Bears

Mike White threw for 315 yards and three touchdowns to lead the host New York Jets to a 31-10 victory over the Chicago Bears on Sunday in East Rutherford, N.J.

White completed 22 of 28 passes, including a 22-yard scoring strike to Elijah Moore and touchdown passes of 8 and 54 yards to Garrett Wilson, who finished with five receptions for 95 yards.

The Jets (7-4) improved to 3-3 at home while Chicago (3-9) lost its fifth straight game and for the eighth time in its past nine contests.

Moore had two receptions for 64 yards, while Zonovan Knight rushed for 69 yards on 14 carries and Ty Johnson ran for 62 yards and a score on five carries.

Bears quarterback Trevor Siemian, thrust into the starting lineup after Justin Fields was inactive due to the injured shoulder he suffered in a loss to the Falcons last week, went 14-for-25 passing for 179 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

David Montgomery rushed for 79 yards on 14 carries and caught three passes for 34 yards for the Bears.

Leading 17-10 at halftime, the Jets pushed their lead to 24-10 on White’s touchdown pass to Moore with 6:35 left in the third quarter.

Johnson’s 32-yard run extended the lead to 31-10 with 2:28 left in the third quarter.

The Jets marched right down the field on their opening possession to take a 7-0 lead when White’s 8-yard touchdown pass to Wilson capped a nine-play, 75-yard drive with 10:12 left in the first quarter.

After the Bears pulled to within 7-3 on Cairo Santos’ 22-yard field goal with 5:59 left in the first quarter, they took the lead on their next drive on Siemian’s 4-yard scoring strike to Byron Pringle early in the second quarter.

The Jets took a 14-10 lead when White found Wilson over the middle for a 54-yard touchdown pass with 4:57 left in the first half.

Greg Zuerlein extended the Jets’ lead to 17-10 with a 57-yard field goal with 12 seconds left in the half.

Vlatko Cancar eager to keep making impact as Nuggets host Rockets

NFL News: Nick Chubb’s TD run lifts Browns over Bucs in OT

Nick Chubb ran for a 3-yard touchdown with 19 seconds left in overtime to give the Cleveland Browns a 23-17 victory Sunday against the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The winning run was set up by a 45-yard pass from Jacoby Brissett to Amari Cooper that moved the ball to Tampa Bay’s 3-yard line. Defender Carlton Davis III fell down on the play before Cooper made the reception.

Brissett passed for 210 yards, one TD and one interception in what was likely his final start before Deshaun Watson returns from his suspension.

Cleveland tied it at 17-17 with 32 seconds left in regulation on Brissett’s 12-yard touchdown pass to David Njoku on fourth-and-10 and Cade York’s extra point.

After the teams exchanged punts on the first three possessions of OT, the Browns (4-7) began their winning drive on their own 29 with 2:45 left.

Chubb rushed for 116 yards on 26 carries as the Browns snapped a two-game losing streak. Cooper caught seven passes for 94 yards.

Tom Brady passed for 246 yards and two scores for the Bucs (5-6). Chris Godwin had 12 catches for 110 yards and a TD.

The Buccaneers had taken a 17-10 lead with 7:41 left in the third quarter on Brady’s 5-yard TD pass to Ko Kieft.

Tampa Bay used up only 25 seconds on a possession that resulted in a punt from its own 10-yard line with 2:10 left in regulation. The Browns began their game-tying drive at Tampa Bay’s 46.

The Buccaneers had a two-game winning streak snapped.

Anthony Schwartz took a pitch from Kareem Hunt and ran 31 yards on the reverse to give Cleveland a 7-0 lead at 10:45 of the first quarter.

Brady connected with Godwin on a 10-yard TD pass to level the score with 5:11 left in the first quarter.

York’s 51-yard field goal gave Cleveland a 10-7 edge with 2:22 remaining in the first quarter.

Tampa Bay tied it up again on Ryan Succop’s 42-yard field with 39 seconds left in the first half.

Stephen Curry leads first-quarter barrage as Warriors down Wolves

Stephen Curry heated up quickly with 13 of his team-high 25 points in a first-quarter flurry and the Golden State Warriors coasted to a 137-114 victory over the host Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday afternoon in Minneapolis.

Jordan Poole went for 24 points and Klay Thompson 21. Draymond Green had 19 points as part of a double-double with a game-high 11 assists for the Warriors, who led by 23 in the game’s ninth minute and ran up a total of 47 points in the first period alone.

Anthony Edwards had a game-high 26 points for the Timberwolves, who lost a second straight after a five-game winning streak.

Curry pieced together two 3-pointers, two 2-point baskets and three free throws in the runaway first quarter, during which four Warriors connected from beyond the arc and eight players scored. Andrew Wiggins had two of Golden State’s six 3-pointers in the period as part of a 10-point contribution.

The Timberwolves trailed by as many as 28 before making a late rally to make things at least a bit interesting.

Still down 118-100 with 7:27 to go, Minnesota got 3-pointers from D’Angelo Russell and Edwards and an interior hoop from Karl-Anthony Towns in an 8-0 burst, prompting Golden State coach Steve Kerr to call a timeout with 5:31 to go.

The break paid dividends when Curry bombed in his fourth 3-pointer of the game on Golden State’s ensuing possession. Thompson connected on his fourth and fifth 3s shortly thereafter and Minnesota never threatened again.

Curry approached a triple-double by adding a game-high 11 rebounds and eight assists for Golden State, which shot 57.5 percent overall and outscored the hosts 60-42 on 3-pointers.

Thompson shot 5 for 8 on 3-pointers to account for a majority of his points. Donte DiVincenzo matched Curry’s output with a season-best four triples, and Poole and Wiggins contributed three apiece to the team’s total of 20.

Wiggins finished with 17 points and DiVincenzo 14 to give the Warriors six scorers in double figures as they won a third straight, recording a season-high point total in the process.

Towns had 21 points, Jaylen Nowell 16, Russell 15 to complement a team-high six assists and Bryn Forbes 10 for Minnesota, which allowed a season-high point total.

Rudy Gobert gathered a team-high 10 rebounds to go with nine points.

NFL News: Bengals stay hot, clip surging Titans 20-16

Tee Higgins caught seven passes for 114 yards and scored the go-ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter to lift the Cincinnati Bengals past the Tennessee Titans 20-16 on Sunday in Nashville, Tenn.

Joe Burrow completed 22 of 37 passes for 270 yards for the Bengals (7-4) and Samaje Perine, who started at running back for the injured Joe Mixon, gained 93 yards from scrimmage (58 rushing, 35 receiving) with a touchdown.

Bengals receiver Trenton Irwin made a fingertip catch on a low throw on third-and-12, extending a drive early in the fourth quarter. Higgins came down with a 27-yard touchdown catch on the next play to move Cincinnati ahead 20-13 with 13:42 remaining.

The Bengals held the Titans (7-4) to a 38-yard field goal on the ensuing drive before marching 59 yards in 12 plays to chew up most of the clock.

What would have been a Cincinnati field goal with almost two minutes left to play became an automatic first down when Titans defensive tackle Kevin Strong was whistled for a hit on Cincinnati’s long snapper, considered a defenseless player during the snap.

With Tennessee out of timeouts, that allowed the Bengals to kneel three times and drain the rest of the clock. The Bengals won for the fifth time in six games, while Tennessee lost in regulation for the first time since Week 2.

The Titans’ Ryan Tannehill finished 22 of 34 for 291 yards. Derrick Henry was held to 38 rushing yards on 17 carries but did have three receptions for 79 yards.

Tennessee got on the board first with a short drive resulting in Caleb Shudak’s first NFL field goal, from 33 yards out, with 14:06 before halftime. The Bengals responded with Evan McPherson’s 47-yard field goal 2 1/2 minutes later.

On the first play of the ensuing drive, Tannehill completed a short pass to Henry, who found a seam and navigated deep into Cincinnati’s territory. A Bengals defender knocked the ball out around the 5, but it bounced into the end zone and Titans receiver Treylon Burks recovered it for a touchdown for a 10-3 lead.

The Bengals fit in a nine-play, 92-yard touchdown drive before halftime. Perine took a catch and run 32 yards on the first play of the drive. The Bengals converted two third downs to set up Perine’s 7-yard scoring run with 1:55 left.

Shudak missed a 35-yarder wide right in the final seconds of the half. McPherson (38 yards) and Shudak (24) traded field goals in the third quarter to make it 13-13 headed into the fourth.

Bengals receiver Ja’Marr Chase (hip) was inactive and missed his fourth straight game after returning to practice during the week.

Pelicans in need of bounce-back game vs. Thunder

The New Orleans Pelicans are coming off their worst performance of the season.

And they might not have star forward Brandon Ingram available when they try to bounce back in a game against the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday night.

Ingram suffered a sprained left big toe in a 132-111 loss at Memphis on Friday night. Coach Willie Green said Sunday that Ingram is day to day.

The Pelicans had won five of six games, but the Grizzlies raced to a 27-9 lead and remained in command throughout.

Green gave credit to Memphis for the way it played from beginning to end.

“They came in right away from the start of the game and just played with more force,” Green said. “They knocked down a lot of shots. They basically got whatever they wanted — 3s, points in the paint, they got to the free-throw line.”

The 44 points that the Grizzlies scored in the first quarter were the most allowed by the Pelicans in any quarter this season.

“We have to come out ready to play,” Green said. “We weren’t. That starts with me having our team prepared, having us ready. Our game-plan discipline wasn’t up to par. They were the better team tonight. Our overall effort just wasn’t there.”

Ingram is averaging 20.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.7 assists. He is shooting 46.7 percent on 3-pointers. The Pelicans also are missing CJ McCollum, who was placed in the NBA health and safety protocols before Friday’s game.

The Thunder’s last game didn’t go much better than the Pelicans’.

Their 118-105 loss at Houston on Saturday night wasn’t as close as the final score might suggest.

The Rockets seized command in the second quarter in similar fashion to how Memphis seized command against the Pelicans in the first.

Houston made 7 of 11 3-pointers while outscoring Oklahoma City 42-22 in the second quarter on its way to a 65-44 halftime lead.

“They took it to us, they threw the first punch,” Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said. “They kept coming. I thought they played with great force on offense and they played stout defense. So credit them, they took it to us.”

Houston shot 52.3 percent from the floor for the game, hitting 18 of 36 3-pointers, and led by as many as 27 points.

“Our defense wasn’t what it should have been and needed to be to win a game,” said guard Josh Giddey, who scored 18 points for the Thunder. “They capitalized. Slow starts have been a common theme. We got to flip the switch and come out of the gates ready to go.”

Oklahoma City wasn’t much better on the offensive end, as it lost for the fourth time in five games. It made 10 of 44 (22.7 percent) 3-pointers.

“We didn’t have the energy on that end of the floor, or the defensive end,” Daigneault said, “to create the type of rhythm that Houston was able to create.”

Much of the Thunder’s offensive rhythm came from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, as is often the case. Gilgeous-Alexander, who entered Sunday third in the NBA with an average of 31.1 points, had 32, while shooting 12 of 21 from the floor and 7 of 7 from the foul line.

NFL News: Tua Tagovailoa and Miami defense overwhelm Texans

Tua Tagovailoa passed for 299 yards and a score and the Miami Dolphins’ defense turned two turnovers into first-half touchdowns in a 30-15 victory over the Houston Texans on Sunday in Miami Gardens, Fla.

The Dolphins (8-3) led 30-0 by halftime — their largest since building a 41-0 halftime lead against Houston on Oct. 25, 2015 — and won their fifth consecutive game.

Miami moved back into a first-place tie with the Buffalo Bills in the AFC East. The Dolphins hold the tiebreaker thanks to a win on Sept. 25 against the Bills. The teams will play again in Buffalo in Week 15.

The Texans (1-9-1) entered the game with the NFL’s worst record and hoped for a better outcome after switching from second-year starter Davis Mills to Kyle Allen at quarterback.

Allen completed 26 of 39 passes for 215 yards and a touchdown, but threw two interceptions and finished with a 67.8 passer rating in his first start for the Texans. He was sacked five times.

Dolphins linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel intercepted Allen with 12:38 left in the second quarter and returned it to the Texans’ 3-yard line. The giveaway set up a touchdown run on the next play by Jeff Wilson.

Two drives later, Dolphins safety Eric Rowe forced a fumble by Texans tight end Jordan Akins, allowing Xavien Howard to recover it and return it 16 yards for a touchdown to give the Dolphins a 27-0 lead with five minutes left in the second quarter.

Miami’s offense was effective until left tackle Terron Armstead was forced to leave the game in the second quarter with a pectoral injury. Tagovailoa was sacked four times and was removed after two drives in the second half with Miami ahead 30-6.

Houston’s defense, led by Maliek Collins (two sacks), recorded five sacks overall.

Allen connected with Akins on a 25-yard touchdown pass with 12:46 left in the fourth quarter to get within 30-12, but the two-point conversion pass failed.

Ka’imi Fairbairn completed the scoring for Houston with a 28-yard field goal with 9:00 remaining.

Kevin Durant (31 points), Nets put away Blazers late

Kevin Durant scored 31 points as the Brooklyn Nets opened a seven-game homestand by pulling away in the fourth quarter for a 111-97 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday afternoon.

Durant made 12 of 20 shots as the Nets completed its first season sweep of Portland since the 2012-13 season. Unlike their two-point win in Portland decided on Royce O’Neale’s tip-in in the final second on Nov. 17, the Nets surged ahead after the game featured 16 lead changes and nine ties through the opening three quarters.

Seth Curry helped the Nets pull away by adding 13 of his season-high 29 points in the fourth when the Nets outscored Portland 27-17. He hit three of his seven 3-pointers in the opening 6:45 of the fourth when Durant rested and finished with his most points since being acquired from Philadelphia at last year’s trade deadline.

Kyrie Irving added 22 as the Nets shot 52.6 percent, made 15 threes and allowed under 100 points for the sixth time this season. Nic Claxton contributed 12 points and seven rebounds while Ben Simmons chipped in 12 rebounds and eight assists.

Jerami Grant followed up his career-high 44 points in Friday’s overtime win over the Knicks by leading Portland with 29 points. Jusuf Nurkic collected 17 points and 14 rebounds, but Anfernee Simons was held to 15 on 4-of-14 shooting after scoring 38 Friday night as Portland shot 44.3 percent.

Brooklyn shot nearly 57 percent and held a 31-24 lead through the opening quarter after Irving hit a 13-footer with 17.6 seconds remaining. Portland began the second with a 16-4 run that gave them a 40-35 lead before Durant returned with 6:14 remaining. Brooklyn took a 58-57 lead at halftime following two free throws by Claxton with 11.4 seconds left.

Durant’s 12-footer snapped a 74-all tie with 4:03 left and Joe Harris converted a four-point play to make it 80-74 with 3:05 before the Nets took an 84-80 lead into the fourth. Curry’s third 3-pointer of the fourth opened a 96-87 lead with 6:45 left and the Nets took their first double-digit lead when Durant’s 3 made it 101-90 with 4:20 to go.

Brooklyn then finished it off when Durant found Irving for an open corner 3-pointer that pushed the lead to 105-92 with 2:37 remaining.

FIFA News: Win or else as U.S. plays supercharged group finale vs. Iran

The task is clear for the United States men’s national team when it plays Iran in its final Group B game of the World Cup at Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday: Win or go home.

While many teams still have multiple options in order to advance to the knockout phase of the tournament, including Iran, the Americans have no choice but to get the three points that come with a victory.

“It sets up our first knockout game of the World Cup,” U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter said. “We win or we’re out of the World Cup.

“Anytime you’re in a World Cup and you get to go into the last group game in control of your own destiny, that’s a pretty good thing.”

The USMNT sits third in the group with two points (0-0-2) after tying Wales 1-1 and then England 0-0 in an impressive defensive effort. The top two teams advance. England has four points (1-0-1), Iran has three (1-1-0) and Wales sits last with one point (0-1-1) but is still alive in a long-shot scenario.

Getting a goal, much less a victory, will be a challenge for the United States since Iran only needs a tie to advance as long as Wales does not upset England and activate a goal-differential tiebreaker. It means Iran will have incentive overload on the defensive end.

England plays Wales concurrently with the U.S.-Iran game, with scoreboard watching also the order of the day.

Iran, which has never advanced out of the group stage, opened the World Cup with a 6-2 loss to England but rebounded for a 2-0 win over Wales.

“I really have to thank the Iranian fans. They helped us play 90 minutes of beautiful football,” Iran coach Carlos Queiroz said. “Now, we have to concentrate on the USA. We haven’t finished yet.”

The USMNT last reached the final 16 of the World Cup in 2014. The Americans did not qualify for the 2018 World Cup and their best finish was a spot in the 2002 quarterfinals.

Iran defeated the U.S. 2-1 in 1998 in only World Cup meeting between the countries.

Mehdi Taremi has two of Iran’s four goals during this World Cup. Timothy Weah is responsible for the Americans’ lone tally.
