NCAAF News: Sydney Brown notches two defensive TDs as Illinois whips Northwestern

Safety Sydney Brown became the first FBS player this season to return an interception and a fumble for touchdowns in the same game to highlight Illinois’ 41-3 Big Ten victory over Northwestern on Saturday afternoon in Evanston, Illinois.

Brown, the twin brother of national rushing leader Chase Brown, scored on a 53-yard fumble return and a 39-yard interception in the third quarter as Illinois (8-4, 5-4 Big Ten) forced six turnovers to retain the Land of Lincoln Trophy.

The Illini did their part to earn their first spot in the Big Ten championship game, but Purdue (8-4, 6-3) rallied to win at Indiana to claim the West Division title. Nonetheless, Illinois finished with its best regular-season record since Ron Zook’s 2007 team earned a Rose Bowl berth with a 9-3 mark.

Northwestern (1-11, 1-8) dropped its 11th game in a row as sophomore walk-on quarterback Cole Freeman, making his second start, completed 12 of 22 passes for 93 yards and four interceptions before being replaced late in the third quarter by freshman Jack Lausch.

Chase Brown, who entered the game as the nation’s rushing leader with 1,582 yards, limped off midway through the first quarter with a leg injury. He returned periodically and finished with a season-low 61 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries.

After Brown’s injury, Reggie Love III (11 rushes, 85 yards) took over and rushed for 43 of the 57 yards remaining on the drive — capping the march with a 2-yard blast off the right side for a 7-0 Illinois lead with 5:22 left in the first.

Northwestern drove into Illinois territory on all three of its second-quarter possessions, but all three ended in interceptions. All-America cornerback candidate Devon Witherspoon picked off two while Sydney Brown earned his first of two interceptions.

Illinois built a 17-0 lead by halftime on Caleb Griffin’s 23-yard field goal and quarterback Tommy DeVito’s 1-yard sneak.

The offensive pattern changed for Northwestern in the second half, but only slightly. The Wildcats rushed to Illinois’ 37-yard line on their second drive of the third quarter, but then Freeman and running back Andrew Clair lost the ball at the mesh point. Sydney Brown picked up the fumble and cruised 53 yards for a score and a 27-0 lead with 7:23 left in the third.

Brown returned to the end zone just three-plus minutes later as he picked off a Freeman pass and zipped 39 yards down the left sideline to give Illinois a 34-0 lead with 4:06 to go in the third.

Illinois’ bid for its first Big Ten shutout since Oct. 14, 2000 ended when Alex Stage booted a 28-yard field goal with 12:17 to play.

Rockets sweep home back-to-back by beating Thunder

Jalen Green scored a team-high 28 points, Alperen Sengun and Jabari Smith Jr. recorded double-doubles and the Houston Rockets beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 118-105 on Saturday to sweep both games of a home back-to-back.

After rallying from a 16-point deficit in the second half to defeat the Atlanta Hawks on Friday, the Rockets seized control with an 18-2 second-quarter run in cruising past the Thunder. Houston led by as many as 27 points.

Oklahoma City was coming off an overtime win against the visiting Chicago Bulls on Friday.

Green shot 11 of 19 while adding a team-best nine assists. His dynamic play started early and continued throughout, particularly in the second period, when Houston shot 16 of 20 overall.

Sengun produced 21 points, 19 rebounds and seven assists, while Smith paired 15 points with 13 rebounds. Kevin Porter Jr. added 16 points and Eric Gordon 15 for the Rockets. Garrison Mathews chipped in 11 off the bench.

The Rockets shot a robust 18 of 36 from behind the arc, with Green leading the way at 6 of 9.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander poured in a game-high 32 points, his 14th 30-point game this season. But the Thunder didn’t produce enough offensively to supplement Gilgeous-Alexander, shooting 39.2 percent overall while missing 34 of 44 3-pointers. Josh Giddey scored 18 points for the Thunder.

After Oklahoma City responded to the Rockets’ 14-4 start with a 9-0 spurt, Houston needed a 3-pointer from Gordon just prior to the first-quarter buzzer to take a 23-22 lead into the second.

Then the Rockets ran away and hid that period, starting with two Mathews 3s and another from Smith in transition that helped extend their lead to 49-29 midway through the quarter.

Six Rockets players scored during the aforementioned 18-2 blitz, with Mathews, Smith and Porter all drilling 3-pointers. The Rockets led 65-44 at the intermission on the strength of their perimeter shooting, going 11 of 19 from deep.

Houston shot 64.1 percent in the first half, boosted by a 42-point second period that featured 7-of-11 3-point shooting.

Gilgeous-Alexander had 18 points at the break, but his teammates hit only 11 of 34 field goals.

NCAAF News: No. 21 Oregon State rallies from 21-point hole to edge No. 9 Oregon

Isaiah Newell scored on two fourth-quarter touchdown runs — his only carries of the game — as host No. 21 Oregon State rallied from a 21-point, second-half deficit to defeat No. 9 Oregon 38-34 Saturday afternoon in Corvallis, Ore., preventing the rival Ducks from clinching a berth in the Pac-12 Conference championship game.

Damien Martinez had his sixth consecutive 100-yard rushing game, gaining 103 yards before leaving with an apparent leg injury for the Beavers (9-3, 6-3 Pac-12), who clinched their first nine-win regular season since 2012.

A hobbled Bo Nix completed 27 of 41 passes for 327 yards and two touchdowns for Oregon (9-3, 7-2).

The Ducks were 0-for-5 on fourth-down attempts, with three of those coming in the fourth quarter.

Leading 34-31 with 9:39 remaining, the Ducks went for it on fourth-and-1 from their own 29-yard line. Nix was stopped for a 1-yard loss on a keeper.

Oregon State took advantage, with Newell scoring on a 6-yard run with 8:11 left to give the Beavers their first lead of the second half.

The Ducks marched to Oregon State’s 3-yard line with three minutes left, but Nix’s fourth-down pass for Troy Franklin fell incomplete and the Beavers ran out the clock.

Ben Gulbranson, who started his seventh straight game at quarterback with Chance Nolan sidelined by a neck injury, completed just 6 of 13 passes for 60 yards with two interceptions.

But Gulbranson scored on a pair of 1-yard runs, the latter with 12:31 remaining, to pull the Beavers within 34-31.

Nix threw a 9-yard scoring strike to Franklin with 14 seconds remaining in the second quarter to give the Ducks a 14-10 lead following a back-and-forth half, sparking a run of 24 unanswered points.

The Ducks seemed to pull away in the third quarter on short touchdown runs by Jordan James and Noah Whittington.

Camden Lewis added a 42-yard field goal to give the Ducks a 31-10 lead with 4:46 left in the third quarter.

The Beavers rallied — entirely on the ground.

Oregon State got a 4-yard TD run from Deshaun Fenwick to stop the Ducks’ run before Lewis kicked a 24-yarder to make it 34-17 with 14:57 to go.

Newell scored on a 15-yard run and the Beavers got the ball back on Oregon’s 2-yard line after Ducks punter Alex Bales bobbled a snap. That set up Gulbranson’s second TD.

Sixers hope to beat Magic for second time in three days

The Philadelphia 76ers will look to record their second win in three days over the Magic on Sunday night when the undermanned teams reconvene in Orlando, Fla.

Shake Milton came within an eyelash of his first triple-double in the NBA on Friday after collecting 24 points, a career-high 10 assists and nine rebounds in the 76ers’ 107-99 victory over the Magic.

Milton made 7 of 13 shots from the floor — including four 3-pointers — to propel Philadelphia to its fifth win in seven games.

The fifth-year guard is averaging 22.3 points in his last four games on 56.9 percent shooting from the floor and 52.6 percent from 3-point range. He also is averaging 7.0 rebounds and 6.5 assists over that same span.

Tobias Harris added 23 points and 10 rebounds and Georges Niang stepped up with five 3-pointers for the 76ers, who played without five-time All-Star Joel Embiid for the third straight game due to a left mid-foot sprain. Philadelphia also was without James Harden (right foot strain) for a 10th consecutive contest and Tyrese Maxey (left foot fracture) for a fourth straight outing.

Despite their absences, Philadelphia kept its resolve and fended off Orlando in the late going of the fourth quarter on Friday.

“For us, it’s just an energy thing and it’s contagious,” Milton said. “(Georges) hits a big 3 and then Tobias does too, and it’s a momentum thing. With us being down as many players as we are, we need those loose-ball plays to get us going.”

Like the 76ers, the Magic were missing significant firepower as well. Wendell Carter Jr (right plantar fascia strain), Chuma Okeke (left knee soreness) and Terrence Ross (illness) were spectators as Orlando fell for the fifth time in its last six games.

The Magic welcomed the return of star rookie Paolo Banchero following a seven-game absence due to a sprained left ankle. The top overall pick of the 2022 NBA Draft scored 19 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the floor. He also made 8 of 11 attempts from the free-throw line.

“(He adds) a ton,” Orlando coach Jamahl Mosley said. “We talk about his ability to get to the rim. His ability to get to the free throw line. His physical stature (which allows him to) punish defenses is going to be big for us. Our switching gets back into play the same way with bigger-sized bodies.”

Franz Wagner recorded a team-high 24 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor. Bol Bol added 18 points, eight rebounds and four blocks, and Moe Wagner chipped in seven points and five boards in 17 minutes while making his season debut.

“His energy, his enthusiasm, those bell plays we talk about — whether that’s taking a charge, making the extra pass, getting under the skin of the defender — he’s great at those things,” Mosley said of Wagner, who returned after spraining his right foot in a preseason game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Oct. 14.

“The other side people don’t recognize because of that energy is he has a high basketball IQ.”

NCAAF News: No. 7 Alabama rolls past Auburn behind Bryce Young’s 4 TDs

Behind four touchdowns from quarterback Bryce Young, host No. 7 Alabama kept its College Football Playoff hopes alive with a 49-27 win over rival Auburn on Saturday in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Young passed for 343 yards and threw three touchdowns in the first half. The reigning Heisman Trophy winner also added 48 yards and a score on the ground in the opening half.

Jermaine Burton, Ja’Corey Brooks and Traeshon Holden had touchdown receptions for the Crimson Tide (10-2). Jahmyr Gibbs had a team-high 76 yards rushing and a score. Roydell Williams also added a scoring run. Jase McClellan had a rushing and receiving score.

Quarterback Robby Ashford had a touchdown pass to Ja’Varrius Johnson and tallied 121 yards and two rushing scores for the Tigers. Tailback Jarquez Hunter recorded a team-high 134 rushing yards.

It was the first time in Auburn (5-7) history that two runners rushed for a 100 yards or more in three consecutive games.

The Tigers jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a 24-yard touchdown run by Ashford. But Alabama responded when Young scored on a 5-yard run with 6:25 to go in the opening quarter. A 52-yard reception by Burton sparked the Crimson Tide’s response.

Alabama grabbed a 14-7 lead late in the first quarter when Young connected with McClellan on a 10-yard touchdown pass.

Following a fumble by Hunter in Auburn territory, Alabama went up 21-7 one play into the second quarter when Williams found the end zone from 5 yards out.

The Tigers cut the lead to 21-14 when Ashford connected with Johnson in the corner of the end zone on a beautifully thrown 20-yard wheel route.

But Alabama answered with an eight-play, 92-yard scoring drive, which was capped by a 33-yard touchdown reception by Brooks.

A 27-yard touchdown reception by Holden increased the Crimson Tide’s lead to 35-14 with less than a minute to go until halftime following a muffed punt by Keionte Scott.

After a 2-yard scoring run by McClellan on Alabama’s first drive to open the third quarter, Auburn responded with a seven-play, 75-yard drive to trim the lead to 42-21.

Two fourth quarter field goals by Auburn kicker Alex McPherson and a 24-yard run by Gibbs capped the scoring.

Knicks look for better defensive showing vs. Grizzlies

For the New York Knicks, home is not where their defense is.

But Madison Square Garden is where the high-powered Memphis Grizzlies will be Sunday night when the Knicks are slated to close out a two-game homestand by hosting the Grizzlies.

Both teams were off Saturday after playing at home Friday. The Knicks squandered a 14-point first-half lead and fell to the Portland Trail Blazers, 132-129, in overtime. The Grizzlies never trailed in a 132-111 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans.

The Knicks opened their home schedule with a pair of strong defensive efforts in a 130-106 win over the Detroit Pistons and a 115-102 victory over the Orlando Magic. But New York has given up at least 130 points in four of its last six home games after surrendering at least 130 points just three times — anywhere — in the first two seasons under defensive-minded head coach Tom Thibodeau.

The loss Friday was particularly discouraging for the Knicks, who didn’t have to face Trail Blazers superstar guard Damian Lillard (right calf strain) but were victimized instead by the trio of Jerami Grant, Anfernee Simons and Josh Hart.

Grant scored a career-high 44 points while Simons added 38 points, tied for the second-most he’s scored in a single game. Hart pulled down six offensive rebounds, tied for his career-high, on his way to finishing with a career-high 19 rebounds.

“We took a step back,” Knicks center Mitchell Robinson told reporters Friday night. “Our defense, we allowed guys to get in the paint, stuff like that. We got to be better.”

The task could be even tougher on both ends of the floor Sunday night for the Knicks, who announced Saturday that Jalen Brunson is questionable for the game due to a quad contusion. Brunson scored a season-high 34 points in a 129-119 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday night before leading New York with 32 points Friday night.

The Grizzlies unveiled a balanced attack Friday, when they finished just shy of their season-high for points in a single game. Memphis, which beat the Brooklyn Nets 134-124 on Oct. 24, entered Saturday averaging 115.1 points per game, eighth-most in the NBA.

Six players scored in double figures Friday for the Grizzlies, led by star guard Ja Morant, who is playing through a Grade 1 left ankle sprain. Morant finished with a double-double (23 points, 11 assists) despite playing just 28 minutes. He missed the Grizzlies’ 127-115 loss to the Nets on Nov. 20 due to the injury but has scored 57 points while shooting 54.1 percent from the field in his last two games.

Steven Adams (15 points, 11 rebounds) also had a double-double for the Grizzlies on Friday night while Dillon Brooks (25 points), Jaren Jackson Jr. (20 points), Brandon Clarke (12 points) and David Roddy (11 points) also reached double figures.

“Definitely a really solid win by our group,” Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins said afterward. “Lot of guys contributed tonight on both ends.”

NCAAF News: Indiana QB Dexter Williams II (leg) hospitalized after serious knee injury

Indiana quarterback Dexter Williams II was carted off the field and transported to a hospital after sustaining what appeared to be a severe injury to his right leg during the Hoosiers’ game against Purdue on Saturday in Bloomington, Ind.

Williams sustained the injury when he immediately fell to the ground after he planted his foot to throw a pass during the first quarter. He wasn’t hit on the play.

Williams, was carted from the field on a stretcher with his leg in an air cast.

Before being injured, Williams completed his lone pass for 5 yards, in addition to rushing for 9 yards on four carries.

Williams missed the 2021 season after he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during spring drills.

Williams, a redshirt sophomore, was making his second straight start for the Boilermakers after going 2-for-7 passing for 31 yards, in addition to rushing for 86 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries, in a double-overtime win against Michigan State last week.

Williams was replaced by Connor Bazelak.

Celtics riding role players ahead of meeting with Wizards

The NBA-leading Boston Celtics start with Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum.

It takes a whole lot more to rise to the top with a 15-4 record and 11 wins in a 12-game span.

Who will step up Sunday night as the Celtics look to continue their run of play against the Washington Wizards? There are plenty of options.

With Brown and Marcus Smart in foul trouble, Boston turned to Payton Pritchard and Luke Kornet in Friday’s 122-104 win. The duo combined to score 14 second-half points as the Celtics overcame a third-quarter deficit.

“We talked about it from Day 1. We have a lot of different ways we can do things,” Celtics interim coach Joe Mazzulla said. “Credit to Payton and Luke, what they do on a daily basis to stay ready. That says a lot about where we can go with our team.”

Tatum (30 points on 10-of-17 shooting, including seven during a late 19-0 run) and Brown (25) still led the Boston scorers, but the comeback win would not have been possible without the important contributions from the bench.

“We’re going to be down six in the third quarter sometimes. And that’s OK, it’s supposed to happen,” Mazzulla said. “Right now, everything is going really well for us.”

Brown has scored 25 or more points in four straight games.

The Celtics are playing the third of a six-game homestand that continues with a Monday visit from Charlotte and two games in three nights with Miami.

They won’t have back-to-back off days until the halfway mark of an upcoming six-game road trip, concluding in California.

“We always have to find ways to get guys rest and steal minutes here and there,” Mazzulla said. “I think guys are in a great spot physically and mentally.”

The Wizards finished a rare set of back-to-back games in Miami, losing both by a single possession. Friday was a 110-107 loss, despite Bradley Beal and Kyle Kuzma each scoring 28 points.

“We did enough throughout the course of the game to put ourselves in position to win,” Beal said. “Just a matter of us getting stops on the defensive end.”

Beal, who has seven consecutive 20-point games and averages 21.5 in his career against Boston, had missed the Wednesday matchup with a thigh contusion.

Rookie guard Johnny Davis (groin), Monte Morris (ankle) and Rui Hachimura (ankle) missed Friday’s game. The latter two have been out for the last three games.

“(Morris has) had some issues in the past. It’s just been more managing,” Wizards coach Wes Unseld Jr. said. “It flared up a bit, so we’re trying to get that to calm down, get the strength and mobility back.”

The Celtics have won the last three head-to-head meetings, and this will be the second of the season in Boston.

On Oct. 30, Brown logged a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds in a 112-94 win.

Kristaps Porzingis had 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Wizards. It was one of his team-leading six double-doubles.

NCAAF News: Kentucky defeats Louisville for fourth straight time

Kentucky’s Will Levis tossed two touchdown passes, Chris Rodriguez Jr. set a record for 100-yard games, and the Wildcats beat No. 25 Louisville 26-13 for the fourth straight time in the state rivalry on Saturday in Lexington, Ky.

Levis was 11-for-19 for 188 yards with touchdown passes to Dane Key and Barion Brown. Rodriguez notched his program-best 20th 100-yard game by rushing 24 times for 120 yards, breaking the mark of 19 held by Benny Snell Jr. (2016-18).

Matt Ruffolo kicked four field goals as the Wildcats (7-5) moved to 19-15 overall in the series and evened their home record at 10-10 against Louisville (7-5).

Cardinals quarterback Brock Domann started but struggled, going 14-for-21 for 129 yards with a TD and interception. Malik Cunningham replaced him and went 3-for-6 for 16 yards and one interception overall, but Domann returned in the second half for the game’s remainder.

Cunningham ran for the squad’s first score, giving him 50 career TDs on the ground and eclipsing the record-setting career tally of former Louisville star Lamar Jackson, the 2016 Heisman Trophy winner.

Jawhar Jordan rushed for a game-high 145 yards on 22 carries, and Tyler Hudson caught a TD pass.

In the first quarter, Levis, a senior, produced the game’s first score when he hit Key on an 8-yard strike to end a five-play, 86-yard drive.

The Cardinals’ ensuing series was successful until the Wildcats stuffed Jordan on fourth-and-1. The home side capitalized by going 62 yards, culminating with Ruffolo’s 43-yard boot.

Kentucky linebacker J.J. Weaver sacked Domann, forced a fumble, recovered it and ran 14 yards to the Louisville 6-yard line. Ruffolo then tacked on another field goal, from 29 yards, for a 13-0 advantage.

After failing to score on its first three drives, Louisville replaced Domann with Cunningham. The senior perked up the offense and sent it on its first scoring drive late in the second quarter. His scramble for 6 yards gave him the milestone mark and left the Cardinals down 13-7 at halftime.

Following Ruffolo’s third boot, a 35-yarder, Trevin Wallace intercepted Cunningham to set up Levis’ 3-yard lob to Brown for a 23-7 lead at 6:35.

In the fourth quarter, Ruffolo made it 4-for-4 with a 40-yarder, but Domann found Hudson from 27 yards with 7:03 left.

Cavaliers, Pistons meet while facing injury woes

The Cleveland Cavaliers’ four-game winning streak ended in Milwaukee on Friday at the start of a three-game road trip.

They’ll try to build a new one when they visit the banged-up Pistons in Detroit on Sunday.

Cleveland led the Bucks by 11 points at halftime but fell apart in the third quarter, getting outscored 35-10.

“This is a great lesson for us,” Cavaliers coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. “We played against an established team who knows where they need to go when it’s time to take it to another level. I think that’s what we are learning. They are a championship-caliber team and we are learning how to get there.”

Donovan Mitchell led Cleveland with 29 points and Darius Garland added 20, but the backcourt duo had as many turnovers (four) as assists. Cleveland recorded 12 assists while shooting 39.1 percent from the field.

“They turned up their pressure defensively. They turned it up to a level that we haven’t seen, we haven’t experienced. That’s playoff basketball,” Mitchell said. “Just understanding that they’re going to turn up their physicality and everything has to be sharper, everything has to be more precise. Just understanding that’s the level we have to get to and that’s playoff basketball. … We have things to learn and improve on but we’re not in here pouting.”

Losing center Jarrett Allen to a hip injury contributed to the second-half collapse. He took a hard fall in the first half and played briefly in the second before departing.

It remains to be seen if he’ll need some time off.

“He’s sore. He wasn’t able to go. He gave it a try coming out but wasn’t able to go,” Bickerstaff said. “He fell early, landed on it. If Jarrett can go, he plays. It had to be pretty bad for him to not go.”

The Cavaliers have already won in Detroit this month. They recorded a 112-88 victory on Nov. 4.

Mitchell and Garland sat out, but Allen picked up the slack, scoring 23 points.

Detroit played without four starters in Phoenix on Friday but hung tough before succumbing 108-102.

Star guard Cade Cunningham is out indefinitely with a shin injury. Saddiq Bey (ankle), Isaiah Stewart (toe) and Jaden Ivey (knee) were also sidelined, though Bey and Ivey might return on Sunday.

The team’s other starter, Bojan Bogdanovic, suffered an ankle injury in the late going.

Yet the Suns couldn’t put the game away until the final minute.

“We have to look at it from a positive standpoint,” Pistons coach Dwane Casey said. “We’re out four starters and the guys that stepped in did their job. I’m proud of them for that.”

Bogdanovic finished with 19 points and Killian Hayes flirted with a triple-double (17 points, nine assists, eight rebounds). Alec Burks added 17 points off the bench.

“It’s disappointing because the guys played their hearts out,” Casey said. “They competed at a high level. We had one point guard, basically. Eighteen turnovers, which broke our back. But I thought guys competed at a very high level, defensively, offensively with one of the best teams in the league.”
