NCAAF News: Garrett Shrader, Sean Tucker boost Syracuse over Boston College

Garrett Shrader threw for two fourth-quarter touchdowns and Sean Tucker ran for two more as Syracuse came back for a 32-23 win over host Boston College on Saturday night.

Devaughn Cooper (8 yards) and Damien Alford (58 yards) caught Shrader’s touchdown passes and Cooper scampered in from 5 and 29 yards out as the Orange (7-5, 4-4 ACC) held a 26-13 scoring edge in the final quarter.

Shrader finished 21-of-27 for 285 yards while Tucker rushed for 125 yards on 21 carries, becoming the third-leading rusher in Syracuse history.

Oronde Gadsden II had six catches for 106 yards for Syracuse.

Anwar Sparrow logged three tackles for loss.

Emmett Morehead was 29-of-38 for 252 passing yards and two touchdowns for BC (3-9, 2-6).

Zay Flowers (110 yards) caught two TD passes, setting BC records with 12 this season and 29 in his career.

Pat Garwo (83 yards) also ran for a score.

With BC driving near midfield, Morehead was strip sacked by Caleb Okechukwu and Syracuse took over with 5:25 left. Tucker broke through to cap a 6-play drive in 2:29.

BC led 10-0 in less than five minutes. Syracuse’s first four possessions resulted in a Bryce Steele fumble recovery, an Edwin Kolenge blocked punt, a missed field goal and a punt.

The special teams highlights resulted in BC starting inside the red zone, though it first settled for a 28-yard Connor Lytton field goal.

After Syracuse went 3-and-out, the Eagles found the end zone in three plays as Morehead hit Flowers for a 7-yard reception.

With 2:18 left in the half, the Orange capped a 12-play, 66-yard drive with a 47-yard Andre Szmyt field goal.

After Sparrow’s recovery inside BC territory on the following possession, the Orange was tackled for loss and a flagrant foul on right tackle Enrique Cruz stalled a late drive.

The first two third-quarter drives lasted 6:17 and 7:03. After BC went scoreless, Syracuse was held to a 29-yard field goal after two penalties and a Donovan Ezeiruaku sack.

A 30-yard toss to Flowers along the sideline set up Garwo’s TD run at the end of a nine-play drive early in the fourth.

Syracuse responded with an 8-play, 81-yard drive, scoring on Cooper’s 8-yard catch-and-run with 9:56 left.

The Orange took an 18-17 lead with 7:05 remaining, as a quick 3-play series ended with Alford catching a 58-yard pass.

No. 2 Houston off its game, survives scare from Kent St.

Marcus Sasser scored 19 points and Jamal Shead hit the go-ahead jumper with 48 seconds left as No. 2 Houston overcame a sluggish start to rally for a 49-44 victory over visiting Kent State on Saturday.

Sasser shot 5 of 16 from the field, including 1 of 10 from 3-point range, to go along with five rebounds and two assists, while J’Wan Roberts added 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Shead finished with six points and five rebounds.

Houston (6-0), which trailed by six points early in the second half, shot a season-low 16 of 50 (32 percent) from the field, including 2 of 17 (11.8 percent) from 3-point range, in addition to outrebounding the Golden Flashes 56-33.

Kent State (5-2) was led by VonCameron Davis, who had a team-high 14 points to go along with four rebounds. Sincere Carry, who averaged a team-high 19.8 points, was held to just nine points by going 2 of 22 from the field, including 1 of 11 from beyond the arc. Carry did collect eight steals, while Malique Jacobs had 11 points and a team-leading seven rebounds.

The Golden Flashes shot 15 of 63 (23.8 percent) from the field, including 6 of 29 (20.7 percent) from beyond the arc.

Trailing 30-24 with 16:11 left in the game, Tramon Mark and Sasser hit back-to-back 3-pointers to spark a 15-0 run to take a 39-30 lead following Ja’Vier Francis’ free throw with 10:42 to go.

The Golden Flashes responded by going on a 14-4 run to take a 44-43 lead on Jacobs’ 3-pointer with 1:05 remaining.

Shead countered with a short jumper with 48 seconds remaining to give Houston the lead. Jarace Walker blocked Carry from close range and Sasser hit two free throws to push the lead to 47-44 with 28 seconds left.

The Golden Flashes missed a pair of 3-point attempts on their next possession and Sasser secured the win with two free throws with 12 seconds left.

After Kent State took a 15-5 lead on Davis’ layup with 13:52 left in the first half, the Cougars chipped away at the lead and took a 24-22 advantage at halftime.

NCAAF News: Texas Tech ends futility vs. Oklahoma, wins 51-48 in OT

Tyler Shough threw for 436 yards and two touchdowns and Trey Wolff kicked three field goals — including the game-winner — as host Texas Tech knocked off Oklahoma 51-48 in overtime on Saturday night in Lubbock, Texas.

The Red Raiders (7-5, 5-4 Big 12) beat the Sooners for the first time in 11 tries, finishing the season on a three-game winning streak.

Oklahoma (6-6, 3-6) finished with its worst record since 1998.

Jerand Bradley had eight catches for a career-high 173 yards and a touchdown for Texas Tech.

The Sooners got the ball first in overtime, but quarterback Dillon Gabriel was injured on the first play — a pass from wide receiver Drake Stoops to Gabriel off a reverse — and the Oklahoma offense stalled.

Zach Schmit’s 34-yard field goal try went wide right, setting up Wolff’s game-winner on the next possession.

Gabriel finished 28 of 40 for 449 yards and six touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough.

Eric Gray ran for 161 yards, while Marvin Mims (5 catches, 162 yards, 2 TDs) and Theo Wease (3 catches, 123 yards, TD) had big days receiving for Oklahoma.

The Sooners’ C.J. Coldon intercepted Shough, giving Oklahoma the ball in Texas Tech territory with 5:16 remaining and the game tied.

The Sooners’ offense couldn’t get anything going, but Schmit’s 42-yard field goal gave his team a 48-45 lead with 4:04 left.

The Red Raiders then drove the ball steadily down the field, tying it on Wolff’s field goal with 3 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.

Oklahoma led 24-7 midway through the second quarter and looked in control. But Texas Tech scored 17 points in the final 3:09 of the first half to pull within one at halftime.

The Red Raiders ripped off a 10-play, 75-yard touchdown drive in which they never faced a third down to cut the lead to 24-13.

Safety Dadrion Taylor-Demerson’s interception on the third play of the next drive gave Tech the ball inside the Sooners’ 30. It took just four plays for the Red Raiders to strike again, this time on Donovan Smith’s 7-yard run that pulled Tech within four with 1:28 remaining.

The Red Raiders’ defense quickly forced a punt, and a pair of long passing plays took them 77 yards in 45 seconds to set up a 29-yard field goal on the final play before halftime to cut Oklahoma’s lead to 24-23.

St. John’s holds off Niagara 78-70, improves to 7-0

Joel Soriano delivered double-double Saturday afternoon, setting career highs with 21 points and 19 rebounds as host St. John’s fended off a second-half rally by Niagara to earn a 78-70 victory at New York.

It was the fourth consecutive double-double and sixth in the last seven games for Soriano, who set a career-high in points for the second straight game. The senior forward had 19 points in a 76-69 overtime win over Syracuse on Wednesday night.

Soriano’s previous single-game high for rebounds was 18 set against Nebraska on Nov. 17.

David Jones, O’Mar Stanley, Dylan Addae-Wusu and Montez Mathis each had 10 points for St. John’s (7-0), which last opened a season with seven straight wins when it began 12-0 in 2018-19.

Noah Thomasson scored 24 points for Niagara (3-3), which had its three-game winning streak snapped. The Purple Eagles, a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, cut a 19-point deficit to five points at 57-52 with 8:11 remaining.

The Red Storm regained control with a 7-0 run for a 64-52 advantage with 6:50 remaining.

Sam Iorio and Lance Erving had 12 points each for the Purple Eagles.

Iorio opened the game with a 3-pointer to give Niagara its lone lead. A jumper by Andre Curbelo put St. John’s ahead for good at 10-8 with 15:21 left in the opening half and started an 8-0 run.

Niagara got within five points twice more in the first half before AJ Storr and Soriano teamed up on a 9-0 run to extend St. John’s lead to double digits for the first time, ultimately building a 30-16 advantage. The Purple Eagles closed the deficit to eight before the Red Storm entered halftime with a 37-28 lead.

St. John’s opened the second half with a 14-4 run to take its biggest lead at 51-32 with 15:03 remaining. Niagara responded with a 20-6 run and closed out the spurt with 12 straight points, including seven by Iorio, to cut into the Red Storm lead.

Stanley hit a pair of free throws to start St. John’s decisive 7-0 run and the Red Storm let by at least eight points the rest of the way.

NCAAF News: Caleb Williams leads No. 6 USC past No. 15 Notre Dame

Caleb Williams rushed for three touchdowns and passed for another, and No. 6-ranked Southern California completed its best regular season since 2008 with a 38-27 win over rival and No. 15-ranked Notre Dame on Saturday in Los Angeles.

The Trojans (11-1, 8-1 Pac-12), already locked into next Friday’s Pac-12 Conference championship game, maintained their prospects of playing in the College Football Playoff with an emphatic win to cap the regular season.

USC jumped ahead less than five minutes into Saturday’s contest when Williams connected with Tahj Washington on an 11-yard touchdown, and the Trojans led from wire-to-wire thereafter.

Notre Dame (8-4) threatened in the second quarter when Drew Pyne threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Michael Mayer.

The Fighting Irish pulled to within 10-7 on that score, but gave up the first of Williams’ rushing touchdowns on the ensuing USC possession. The 5-yard end-zone jaunt just 34 seconds before halftime pushed the Trojans’ lead back to double digits — and it never again dipped back into single digits.

USC — and specifically Williams — quickly answered any Notre Dame rally effort throughout the second half, pushing its lead to 17 points on three occasions in the third and fourth quarters. Williams ran for scores of 3 and 16 yards, the latter slamming the door on the Fighting Irish with 2:35 remaining.

Raleek Brown opened the second half with a 5-yard touchdown run for the Trojans. Austin Jones, meanwhile, buoyed the USC rushing attack with 154 yards on 24 carries to support Williams’ 35 yards.

Williams finished 18-of-22 passing for 232 yards and spread his completions among nine pass-catchers. Jordan Addison led the way with 45 yards on three receptions.

Pyne went 23-of-26 passing for 318 yards and threw three touchdown passes in the loss, including a second to Mayer in the game’s closing moments. He was intercepted by Calen Bullock in the fourth quarter.

The Irish rushed for just 90 yards on 26 carries.

Up-and-down Colorado tries to hand Yale first loss

The Yale Bulldogs head to Boulder, Colo., unranked, so that could be a problem for the Colorado Buffaloes.

Colorado (3-3) has shined against ranked opponents, beating Texas A&M and Tennessee — who beat No. 3 Kansas on Friday — but has lost to Grambling, Boise State and UMass.

The Buffaloes will try to reverse that trend when they host Yale (6-0) on Sunday afternoon.

Colorado is coming off a 68-55 loss to Boise State in the fifth-place game of the Myrtle Beach Invitational on Nov. 20. The Buffaloes were without J’Vonne Hadley for the second straight game and Tristan da Silva didn’t play in the second half due to a migraine.

“When he’s out and J’Vonne Hadley is out, we’re pretty exposed in that front line,” Colorado head coach Tad Boyle said.

The Buffaloes have played just one home game so getting back to a familiar court might help their consistency.

“We keep going back and forth — win loss, win loss,” Nique Clifford said. “We’ve just got to get back to the drawing board when we get back. Practice hard and just figure out what we’re doing wrong. We’ve got to play harder as a team.”

The Bulldogs have rolled through their early schedule, winning the Outrigger Rainbow Classic in Honolulu, which included a 62-59 overtime win over Hawaii.

They’ve won every other game by double digits, the latest a 73-44 victory over Vermont on Tuesday. Yale trailed at halftime, which was just the second time it had all season.

“I have a really good staff, and everyone made great suggestions to the team (at halftime) on what we needed to do to be better,” coach James Jones said.

The Bulldogs will see a familiar face Sunday. Jalen Gabbidon, who played for Yale the past three seasons, transferred to Colorado for his final year of eligibility. Gabbidon is averaging 8.8 points this season.

NCAAF News: No. 10 Tennessee uses ground game to demolish Vanderbilt

Jaylen Wright ran for 160 yards and two touchdowns on only five carries to help No. 10 Tennessee close its regular season with a 56-0 rout of host Vanderbilt on Saturday night in Nashville, Tenn.

The victory, coupled with multiple upsets of teams ranked ahead of the Volunteers (10-2, 6-2 Southeastern Conference) in the College Football Playoff poll, could put them in a better position to land a New Year’s Six Bowl or even keep very slim hopes of making the CFP alive.

The Commodores (5-7, 2-6) lost to Tennessee for the fourth consecutive time.

Most of Wright’s yards came on touchdown runs of 83 and 50 yards.

Jabari Small also scored two touchdowns and ran for 79 yards on 11 carries as the Volunteers leaned heavily on their running game in the absence of injured starter Hendon Hooker, who was lost for the season last week with a torn ACL.

Joe Milton III, who completed 11 of 21 passes for 147 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions, started and connected with Jalin Hyatt for 61 yards to the Vanderbilt 3-yard line on the third play of the game. The play set up a short touchdown run by Small on the ensuing play.

Even with three offensive linemen injured, the Volunteers ran for 362 yards. Dylan Sampson contributed 131 yards on 12 carries, including an 80-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Even tight end Princeton Fant found his way into the end zone running the ball with a 1-yard dive into the end zone late in the first quarter.

Dee Williams made an impact on special teams when he fielded a punt and returned it 73 yards for a touchdown to put the Vols ahead 21-0 with 8:09 left in the first half.

AJ Swann played for the first time since Nov. 5 and replaced starter Mike Wright at quarterback on Vanderbilt’s third drive of the second half after Wright completed only 7 of 13 passes for 28 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. Swann didn’t have any more success, as he completed 11 of 17 passes for 79 yards. Ray Davis ran for 60 yards and Wright totaled 50 rushing yards.

After tough loss, LSU back home to take on Wofford

Coming off a gut-wrenching loss to Kansas State in the Cayman Islands Classic finale, LSU aims to bounce back Sunday when it hosts Wofford in Baton Rouge, La.

On Wednesday the Tigers appeared to have tied the game against the Wildcats on a layup by Trae Hannibal as time expired, but the shot was waved off because of an issue with the clock starting on the inbounds play. The Tigers (5-1) were left on the short end of a 61-59 loss as a result.

That issue aside, turnovers didn’t help their cause as they had 14 in the second half and 17 for the game. The Tigers also shot just 50 percent from the free-throw line.

“We turned it over 14 times and shot 50 percent on our free throws. It’s hard to win when you do those two things,” LSU head coach Dave McMahon told the Advocate.

But McMahon continues to be encouraged by his team’s effort.

“I can’t fault our players for their great effort on the floor. We just couldn’t score enough points in the second half to win.”

As for Wofford (4-2), it’s riding a three-game winning streak into its battle with the Tigers and searching for its first road win. The Terriers beat North Greenville 70-59 on Wednesday.

LSU is one of two SEC schools Wofford plays this coming week as it travels to Vanderbilt next Saturday.

Freshman Jackson Paveletzke has played a key role for the Terriers, tied for the team lead in points with B.J. Mack at 16.5 points per outing. Paveletzke is also their top playmaker, dishing out a team-best 23 assists (3.8 per game).

“Paveletzke is fearless. He doesn’t play like a freshman,” Wofford head coach Jay McAuley told WSPA 7 News earlier this season.

LSU has two players averaging better than 16 points per game in KJ Williams (17.3) and Adam Miller (16.3). The Tigers have scored 70 or more points four times and are 3-0 at home.

NCAAF News: No. 22 UCF survives USF after blowing 24-point lead

Backup quarterback Mikey Keene tossed a touchdown pass with 20 seconds left and No. 22 UCF escaped with a 46-39 victory over host South Florida on Saturday night in Tampa, Fla.

The Knights had to rally after squandering a 24-point lead in the third quarter.

UCF earned a berth in the American Athletic Conference championship game. The Knights (9-3, 6-2 AAC) will play regular-season winner Tulane in New Orleans next Saturday.

Keene took over in the second half when starter John Rhys Plumlee left the game after apparently aggravating a hamstring injury.

Plumlee rushed for 133 yards and was 9-of-9 passing for 73 yards and a score in the first half in leading UCF to a 28-0 lead midway through the second quarter and a 28-7 cushion at the break.

Keene finished 15-of-19 passing for 129 yards and hit Javon Baker with a 41-yard pass to South Florida’s 29-line on the final drive before connecting with Holler on a 14-yard strike for the decisive score. He also had a TD pass to Kobe Hudson.

Byrum Brown was 13-for-20 for 140 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 109 yards and two touchdowns for the Bulls (1-11, 0-8 AAC). His 42-yard TD run gave the Bulls a 39-38 lead with 7:02 remaining but his final pass into the end zone as time ran out fell incomplete.

Brian Battie posted his fifth consecutive triple-digit rushing game to tie a school record set by Jordan Cronkrite in 2012. Battie ended up with 144 yards on 19 carries, including a 14-yard touchdown run.

After their early dominance, the Knights had a disastrous third quarter.

The Bulls scored on Brown’s 4-yard run to start the second half, then took advantage of UCF fumbles on consecutive series to add two more scores to outscore the Knights 22-3 in the third quarter.

The Bulls had a scoring opportunity in the first quarter end when Brown’s fumble at UCF’s 4-yard line sailed into the end zone, where Justin Hodges recovered for a touchback.

The Bulls put together a 15-play, 75-yard scoring drive capped by Brown’s 2-yard pass to Sean Atkins with just 40 seconds left in the second quarter before the flood gates opened in the third quarter.

No. 8 Duke and No. 24 Purdue clash in Phil Knight final

No. 8 Duke and No. 24 Purdue have found lots to be happy about so far in two games in the Phil Knight Legacy.

A tournament championship would certainly cap off the three-game experience.

The Blue Devils (6-1) and Boilermakers (5-0) meet in the tournament final Sunday afternoon in Portland, Ore.

For Purdue, it’s a chance to knock off a Top 10 team in back-to-back games after taking down No. 6 Gonzaga 84-66 in Friday’s late semifinal.

“They’re out there playing with purpose and that’s what you have to have,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said. “Early in the season, very few teams play with purpose collectively.”

Duke will try to repeat its three-game success from the 2017 tournament in Portland. The Blue Devils are 5-0 all-time in the Phil Knight events.

Jeremy Roach’s 21-point outing in Friday’s semifinal against Xavier was one shy of the junior guard’s career-high mark for Duke. It was also the first 20-point game this season by a Blue Devils player.

“It’s awesome to have him getting those shots and leading the team in general, offensively and defensively,” Duke forward Ryan Young said.

In the 71-64 victory against Xavier, Duke addressed the trouble spots on offense from the opening-round squeaker against Oregon State. The Blue Devils shot 26.7 percent from the field in that game.

“I think we were hesitating a little bit, myself included,” Roach said. “We hesitated a little bit, not confident all the way with the shots. We just want to shoot our shots with confidence.”

First-year coach Jon Scheyer said Roach seemed comfortable in key moments, another development that’s starting to percolate across the Duke roster.

“Whether it’s for him or for somebody else, he got some really good looks, really good quality looks,” Scheyer said. “And then you, of course, have to follow it up with a stop, and we did that enough times to get some separation.”

Freshman Kyle Filipowski of Duke has scored in double figures in every game. He had five games in a row as the team’s leading scorer.

“I’ve said it a million times but it’s awesome to come out here and have so many different weapons,” Young said.

Scheyer was more intrigued with how the Blue Devils responded defensively. They gave up only two points in the final five minutes Friday.

“Winning and to close out a game it’s not about scoring, it’s about getting stops,” Scheyer said.

Duke has outrebounded every opponent this season, though the 33-32 margin on Xavier snapped a program-record string of six double-figure rebounding margins.

During Saturday’s day off between games, the Blue Devils planned to look at ways to put together better stretches in the opening minutes and cut down on foul trouble that could become a hindrance.

Purdue’s 7-foot-4 center Zach Edey could pose another type of challenge for Duke. He scored 23 points against Gonzaga, though his streak of double-doubles ended at four. He has posted at least 20 points in the past four games.

Purdue won a regular-season tournament last November by toppling North Carolina and Villanova in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic in Uncasville, Conn.
