NCAAF News: Missouri, Arkansas swing into Battle Line Rivalry

Missouri can secure bowl eligibility while Arkansas will try to raise its bowl profile when these Southeastern Conference rivals meet Friday in Columbia, Mo.

The Tigers (5-6, 2-5 SEC) and Razorbacks (6-5, 3-4) have dubbed this annual game the Battle Line Rivalry. A trophy will be at stake on Faurot Field at Memorial Stadium.

Missouri won five straight games in the series before Arkansas prevailed 34-17 last season.

“The only thing we’re focused on is it’s a rivalry game and it’s trophy week,” Missouri coach Eliah Drinkwitz said. “That’s it. None of the other stuff matters. The most important thing to us is that they have a trophy and we want it and the only way to get it is to play our best game and to prepare the way that we know how to prepare and to play with unbelievable effort.

“That’s the focus and that’s why we did Senior Week last week. This week is all about rivalry week, Arkansas and the Battle Line trophy.”

Missouri rolled to a 45-14 victory over New Mexico State in their previous game after suffering a 66-24 beating at Tennessee. Brady Cook continued his improved play by completing 19 of 27 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 71 yards on seven carries.

“I felt like with the way things ended against Tennessee, I thought it was really important for us to bounce back,” Drinkwitz said. “Offensively, to score on our first three drives, to score on this opening series of both the first half and second half which was the first time we’ve done that all year ? there was real growth there to convert some big third downs and we converted the fourth down.”

The Razorbacks are coming off a 42-27 upset of then-No. 14 Ole Miss. They got quarterback KJ Jefferson back from his clavicle injury and their offensive clicked back into high gear.

“Man, it’s nice to have KJ back,” Arkansas coach Sam Pittman said. “We weren’t too clean on the first two drives, first two scoring drives, but he made us clean because of his athleticism.”

Jefferson completed 17 of 22 passes for 168 yards and three touchdowns against the Rebels. He also rushed for 47 yards on eight carries.

“When you have a guy behind you like that, it builds confidence in you when you have a big runner that can physically run over people,” Pittman said. “I mean, on the draw play, they all came inside, and he cut outside for 20, 30 yards. When you have a guy back there that can break tackles and make things happen, you play a little bit better, to be honest with you.”

The Arkansas offense has averaged 34.9 points per game with Jefferson and just 13.5 in two games in which Jefferson has been sidelined.

On defense, the Razorbacks may be missing cornerstone linebacker Bumper Pool, who is battling hip and back injuries. Pool is second on the club with 92 tackles.

“Bumper is still Bumper and trying to hang on,” Pittman said. “I don’t know that he’ll be able to or not. He’s beat up, not healthy. We’re bowl eligible. I don’t know if he’ll be able to play or not.”

NCAAF News: No. 23 Texas eyes Big 12 title game, first must overcome Baylor

No. 23 Texas will look to keep its chances of playing for the Big 12 Conference championship alive when it hosts Baylor on Friday in Austin in the teams’ final-regular season game.

The Longhorns (7-4, 5-3 Big 12) must beat Baylor and have Kansas beat No. 12 Kansas State on Saturday night to earn a berth opposite undefeated TCU in the league championship game. The Bears (6-5, 4-4) already are bowl-eligible and will aim to derail their longtime rival’s title hopes.

“We all understand the ramifications of where it’s at in the Big 12,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said Monday. “We don’t shy away from those things. We’ve got to do our part and see what happens after that.”

The Longhorns re-entered the College Football Playoff rankings Tuesday after a dominating 55-14 road victory over Kansas on Saturday, their second win in their past three games.

Bijan Robinson rushed for a career-high 243 yards and four touchdowns in just three quarters as the Longhorns finished with 539 total yards — 427 on the ground. Texas also got 108 yards on 11 carries from Jonathon Brooks in an effort that included two TDs in the fourth quarter, one of which covered 70 yards.

The victory over Kansas ensured that Texas will have a winning season, and at No. 24, the Longhorns also moved back into the AP Top 25 as the only four-loss team that’s ranked. Texas’ four losses are by a combined 18 points.

“You can always look back and play the ‘what-if’ game,” Sarkisian said. “‘What if’ this play and ‘what if’ that play in a couple of other ballgames, but in the end, the resiliency our guys have shown, I’m very proud of that.”

Baylor came within a hold-your-breath, last-play field goal of ruining TCU’s undefeated season in a 29-28 loss in Waco on Saturday. The Bears will head into the regular-season finale looking to secure their 11th seven-win season in the past 13 years.

The Bears churned out 501 yards of total offense — their fourth game of the season with 500-plus yards — kept the ball for nearly 34 minutes and effectively shut down explosive TCU until the last seven minutes. Baylor’s Blake Shapen passed for 269 yards and a touchdown while Monaray Baldwin made six catches for 123 yards.

“I think always the emphasis is where I’m at right now, this is who I could become,” Baylor coach Dave Aranda said. “And then further, just collectively, this is where we’re at right now, this is what we could become. You look at that game this past Saturday, and the effort, the speed and just all of it, that’s us right there. We just have to be able to execute better.”

The Longhorns lead the overall series 79-28-4, including a 48-10-2 all-time mark in games played in Austin. Baylor captured last year’s contest in Waco 31-24 but has not won in Austin since 2014, a three-game losing streak.

NCAAF News: Oklahoma, Texas Tech ‘due’ for vintage performances

Not that long ago, there was a time when a meeting between Oklahoma and Texas Tech meant plenty of offensive firepower.

The 2016 meeting featuring Baker Mayfield, at quarterback for the Sooners, against the Red Raiders’ Patrick Mahomes, set a handful of NCAA records.

But entering Saturday’s regular-season finale between the teams at Lubbock, Texas, offensive consistency is a problem area.

Proven capable of explosive plays, each team also has encountered flattening lulls.

While the two rank second and third in the Big 12 in total offense, they’re seventh and eighth in the league in scoring offense.

“We’ve been due,” Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel said. “It’s not always perfect. There are a bunch of things to clean up.”

The Sooners (6-5, 3-5 Big 12) showed their explosiveness early last week, turning in one of the most productive quarters in program history in building a 28-0 lead over Oklahoma State.

Then the offense went dormant, with only two first downs in the second half.

Oklahoma was able to win that game thanks to its defense, which Texas Tech offensive coordinator Zach Kittley said is starting to look much more like the defenses Sooners coach Brent Venables had at Clemson.

“These last two to three weeks, they started to play a lot better defense, going kind of back to this basic stuff they were doing there at Clemson, but they’re very multiple, they’re a high-pressure team. They’re going to blitz you.”

Texas Tech (6-4, 4-4) has won back-to-back games for the first time since the first two games of the season.

In the first four games of conference play, the Red Raiders averaged nearly 520 yards per game. Since, they’ve averaged just more than 350 yards.

They were held to just 246 total yards in last week’s 14-10 win over Iowa State.

Tyler Shough is expected to make his third consecutive start at quarterback for Texas Tech.

“Tyler’s done a good job of coming in and doing what we thought,” Red Raiders coach Joey McGuire said. “He’s getting closer and closer to where we really know who he is and what he can be. But Behren (Morton) will be ready to go.”

Morton hasn’t played since Nov. 5.

The Sooners have won the last 10 meetings between the programs. Texas Tech has not beaten Oklahoma in Lubbock since 2009.

NCAAF News: Iowa can get Big Ten title shot by beating Nebraska

After losing three consecutive conference games, Iowa stands one victory from the Big Ten championship game thanks to a four-game winning streak.

Iowa, at one point, was 3-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play. Then came victories over Northwestern, Purdue, Wisconsin and Minnesota, pushing the Hawkeyes (7-4, 5-3 Big Ten) in position to play either Ohio State or Michigan in the Big Ten title game.

A victory over Nebraska (3-8, 2-6) on Friday at Iowa City, Iowa, will make it happen.

“Really happy for our guys,” said Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, who was embroiled in criticism after the early struggles this season. “Really happy locker room. That’s November football, whatever it takes to get it done.”

Iowa has won seven straight games against Nebraska, which is likely playing its last game under interim head coach Mickey Joseph.

The Cornhuskers lost five consecutive Big Ten games after starting 2-1, including a painful defeat last week.

Nebraska was competitive in the 15-14 home loss to Wisconsin but fell short when the Badgers scored on a touchdown run with 35 seconds left.

The Cornhuskers’ offense totaled 171 yards, with 106 yards passing and 65 yards on the ground.

Casey Thompson completed 12 of 19 pass attempts for 106 yards, with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

“Take a hat off to these kids,” said Joseph, whose team has lost three of the five games in the losing streak by a touchdown or less. “Just a good character group. A group that’s not going to quit.”

Iowa limited Minnesota to 87 passing yards in the 13-10 victory last week — the third time this season an opponent has passed for less than 100 yards.

This is the first season since 1929 that the Hawkeyes’ defense has allowed 10 or fewer points in eight games. The 1929 team gave up 28 points the entire eight-game season.

Jack Campbell, a linebacker, had a fourth-quarter interception against Minnesota and also tallied 10 tackles — his seventh game of 10 tackles or more this season. Campbell is now 20th in school history with 287 career tackles.

Pistons end skid with tight win over Nuggets

Bojan Bogdanovic had 22 points and nine rebounds, Alec Burks scored 21 and the visiting Detroit Pistons ended a seven-game losing streak with a 110-108 win over the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday night.

Kevin Knox II had 17 points and Marvin Bagley III scored 14 for Detroit, which improved to 1-10 on the road this season.

The Pistons played without Cade Cunningham (left shin soreness) for the seventh straight game, and Saddiq Bey (sprained right ankle) missed his second in a row.

Denver’s Nikola Jokic had 31 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds in his return from a three-game absence caused by the NBA’s health and safety protocol. Michael Porter Jr. scored 18, Aaron Gordon had 17 points after missing three games due to an illness, Bruce Brown finished with 11 and Jamal Murray and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope had 10 each.

Murray, back after sitting out two games due to health and safety protocol, added eight assists.

Detroit led by two after three quarters and quickly increased the gap to 92-84 behind eight combined points from Burks and Hamidou Diallo.

With the Nuggets down by 12, Denver’s Zeke Nnaji scored the next four points, but a 3-pointer by Cory Joseph made it 99-88, and Bogdanovic hit a leaner to put Detroit ahead by 13 with 6:36 to go.

It was 103-93 when Denver rallied. Gordon hit two free throws, Murray made a layup, Caldwell-Pope sank a 3-pointer and Jokic added a basket and hit 1 of 2 foul shots make it 104-103.

Burks sank two free throws with 1:36 left, and after the Nuggets turned it over, Burks drained an 18-footer with 50.6 seconds left to make it 108-103.

Jokic hit two free throws with 46.1 seconds left. Burks traveled, and Jokic hit a layup with 13.2 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 108-107.

Bogdanovic was fouled and made both free throws with 8.2 seconds left for a three-point lead. Murray was fouled with 2.2 seconds remaining. He made the first free throw and intentionally missed the second. Gordon got the rebound, but his baseline fadeway was off.

Detroit took a 58-57 edge into halftime and the lead fluctuated throughout the third quarter. The Pistons brought an 83-81 lead into the fourth.

NFL News: Cardinals fire OL coach Sean Kugler due to Mexico City incident

Arizona Cardinals offensive line coach Sean Kugler was dismissed by the organization due to an incident on Sunday night in Mexico City after the team’s arrival for Monday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury told The Arizona Republic that Kugler was sent back home to Arizona prior to Monday’s game.

“It’s challenging anytime you make a staff change in that type of manner and I’m just going to leave it at that,” Kingsbury told The Arizona Republic.

Details of the incident have yet to surface.

Kugler also was the team’s running game coordinator.

Kugler was hired by Kingsbury as part of his original staff in 2019.

Kingsbury said assistant offensive line coach Brian Natkin and tight ends coach Steve Heiden will share Kugler’s duties. Offensive assistant Mike Bercovici will temporarily serve as tight ends coach.

Kugler served as head coach of UTEP from 2013-17 and went 18-36. He resigned after an 0-5 start in 2017.

Kings top Grizzlies for 7th straight win

De’Aaron Fox continued his hot shooting with a team-high 32 points, Harrison Barnes and Kevin Huerter aided in a 3-point barrage with four apiece and the Sacramento Kings won their seventh straight game Tuesday night, 113-109 over the host Memphis Grizzlies.

The reigning Western Conference Player of the Week, Fox hit 11 of 21 shots and 5 of 8 3-point attempts, guiding the Kings to an opening win on a three-game trip.

Ja Morant returned from an ankle injury to put up a game-high 34 points for the Grizzlies, who lost for the fourth time in five games.

After a tight first half that ended with Sacramento up 64-59, the Kings never trailed over the final 24 minutes. They were up 104-93 after Fox’s floater with just 2:51 to go before Memphis made a final push.

Morant hit three straight shots and Dillon Brooks dropped in a pair of free throws, the latter getting the Grizzlies within 104-101 with 1:16 left.

Down three, Memphis had a chance to tie when Morant was fouled on a 3-point shot attempt with 1.7 seconds remaining. But he misfired on his first try, then intentionally missed his third attempt, after which Fox completed the scoring with two foul shots of his own.

Fox complemented his sixth 30-point night of the season with eight rebounds, six assists and four steals.

Sabonis led the Kings in rebounds (13) and assists (eight) while adding nine points. Barnes finished with 26 points, Huerter 18, Malik Monk 14 and Chimezie Metu 10.

Fox hit five 3-pointers as the Kings outscored the hosts 45-24 from beyond the arc.

Morant had seven rebounds and six assists to go with his eighth 30-point game of the season.

Steven Adams was the game’s leading rebounder with 16 for the Grizzlies, while Jaren Jackson Jr. chipped in 22 points, Brooks 14 and John Konchar 10.

NFL News: Rams part ways with leading rusher Darrell Henderson Jr.

The Los Angeles Rams waived fourth-year running back Darrell Henderson Jr. on Tuesday.

Henderson was the Rams’ leading rusher with a modest 283 yards. Los Angeles ranks 31st in the NFL in rushing offense at 76.1 yards per game.

Henderson received four snaps in Sunday’s 27-20 road loss to the New Orleans Saints. He rushed twice for 9 yards.

Cam Akers rushed 14 times for 61 yards and Kyren Williams received seven carries for 36 yards.

Rams coach Sean McVay said Monday that Henderson had a knee issue during pregame drills.

“He felt a little something in his knee and that was kind of what led to Cam and Kyren getting the majority of the work,” McVay said of Henderson. “But he said he felt fine (Monday).”

Henderson, 25, carried the ball 70 times in 10 appearances (seven starts) this season and scored three touchdowns. He also had 17 receptions for 102 yards.

Henderson rushed for 1,742 yards and 13 touchdowns and caught 66 passes for 474 yards and four scores in 50 games (28 starts) for Los Angeles.

The Rams also waived linebacker Justin Hollins form the active roster and tight end Kendall Blanton from the practice squad.

The defending Super Bowl-champion Rams are just 3-7 heading into Sunday’s road against the Kansas City Chiefs. Los Angeles has dropped four straight games.

Tobias Harris, bench power short-handed 76ers past Nets

Tobias Harris shook off a minor ankle scare early in the third quarter to score a season-high 24 points as the short-handed Philadelphia 76ers beat the visiting Brooklyn Nets 115-106 on Tuesday night.

Harris became Philadelphia’s top scoring option due to the absences of Joel Embiid (left mid-foot sprain), James Harden (strained right foot) and Tyrese Maxey (broken left foot). Harris, who had missed the previous two games with a sore left hip, appeared to get injured again when he grabbed his right ankle in pain in the opening minute of the third after colliding with Kevin Durant under the rim after missing a short jumper.

After getting the ankle taped up, Harris scored 18 of his 24 points. He hit 10 of 21 shots as the Sixers shot 43.4 percent and survived allowing 55 percent.

In a postgame interview with TNT, Harris said he meditated in the locker room while getting his ankle treated.

De’Anthony Melton added a season-best 22 points in his third straight start. Reserve Paul Reed, who scored 10 points in his first 13 games this year, collected season highs of 19 points and 10 rebounds. Georges Niang and Shake Milton contributed 16 points apiece as Philadelphia dominated the glass by a 49-35 margin and scored 20 second-chance points.

Kyrie Irving led the Nets with 23 points, but Durant finished with 20 — held under 25 for the first time this season. Nic Claxton added 12 while Ben Simmons collected 11 points and 11 assists while hearing boos throughout the night in his return to Philadelphia.

After Melton’s contested 3 at the horn put Philadelphia up 63-57 at halftime, the Sixers briefly lost the lead when Claxton’s dunk put Brooklyn up 69-68 with 7:32 remaining in the third. Harris hit a dunk and a jumper for a 75-69 lead with about five minutes left and then sent the Sixers into the fourth with an 85-82 lead after hitting a 19-footer with 4.6 seconds left.

Consecutive putbacks by Reed and Melton opened a 96-87 lead with 8:10 remaining. Harris then made an open 3 for a 99-89 lead when Durant hesitated on a defensive switch a little over a minute later.

Three straight hoops by Milton gave Philadelphia a 111-97 lead with 3:08 left, prompting the Nets to empty their bench.

NFL News: Streaking Lions chase four in a row, brace for Bills

Heading into November, the Detroit Lions resembled a train wreck. Entering their traditional Thanksgiving Day game, the Lions are suddenly on the fast track to playing meaningful games in December.

Their hopes of entering the playoff picture could quickly be derailed when they host the powerful Buffalo Bills (7-3).

Detroit (4-6) comes into the game with a three-game winning streak, including a convincing 31-18 road triumph over the New York Giants on Sunday. The Lions will be seeking to string together four consecutive wins for the first time since 2016, when they had five victories in a row.

“It’s huge. I think just getting a win against a good team on the road is always a good boost,” quarterback Jared Goff said. “We came into that game, all we heard about was how good they were in the red zone, how good they were on third down. And we said, ‘Well, we’re pretty good in the red zone too, and we’re pretty good on third down.’ And being able to prove that against a good team on the road is a lot of fun, and hopefully that carries over.”

The Lions have a razor-thin margin for error, but an upset Thursday would put them in the NFC wildcard race.

“None of it matters in my opinion if we don’t win this next one,” coach Dan Campbell said. “We’re in a good place, the guys understand the things that we’re doing that are allowing us to win. And we’ve got to continue to do that, and I know we can’t start thinking other things and get ourselves out of the mold of what we’ve been the last three weeks. We’ve got to stay the course.”

Protecting the ball has been a key component to the turnaround. They’ve committed just one turnover in the past three games.

In an ironic twist, the Bills have spent more time in Detroit’s Ford Field lately than the home team. A massive snowstorm in the Buffalo area forced a relocation of the Cleveland-Buffalo game to Detroit last week, and the Bills snapped a two-game losing streak with a 31-23 victory.

Quarterback Josh Allen was held to a modest 197 yards passing but connected with Stefon Diggs for a touchdown in the closing seconds of the first half. Allen led them on five scoring drives in the second half, four of which ended with Tyler Bass field goals.

“Everyone expects him to be Superman every game all the time, every throw,” coach Sean McDermott said. “I just love the fact that A, he’s human, and B, that he was able to work himself through (a slow start). That says way more about him than probably most people give him credit for in terms of his performance.”

Buffalo is familiar with playing in Detroit and no stranger to Thanksgiving Day games. The Bills defeated the New Orleans Saints 31-6 last Thanksgiving and recorded a 26-15 victory over Dallas in 2019.

“For the players and coaches who have never done it before, I think it’s an honor and fun to be a part of a tradition like that, especially playing at Detroit, who has traditionally played on Thanksgiving,” McDermott said.

Detroit’s top cover corner, Jeff Okudah, is expected to miss the game due to a concussion.

Center Mitch Morse (elbow, ankle) was among the Bills who didn’t practice on Tuesday.
