New Mexico-New Mexico St. ppd. after campus shooting death

A fatal shooting on the campus of the University of New Mexico led to the postponement of Saturday night’s game between the Lobos and New Mexico State.

The Albuquerque Journal reported the shooting took place around 3 a.m. Saturday morning near a residence hall on campus. Officer Chase Jewell of the Albuquerque Police Department told the newspaper that one person was pronounced dead on the scene from gunshot injuries.

The Journal reported that New Mexico State forward Mike Peake was shot during the incident and transported to a local hospital. New Mexico State hasn’t confirmed that the 21-year-old Peake was involved nor has it divulged his condition.

The person killed was a 19-year-old New Mexico student.

Authorities are investigating to learn who else was at the scene.

The university put out an alert at 4:15 a.m. indicating that there was not a threat to the campus community.

The two schools put out a joint statement on Saturday. The game was scheduled to be played at The Pit on the New Mexico campus in Albuquerque.

“In light of the tragic incident earlier this morning on the University of New Mexico campus, the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University have jointly decided to postpone this evening’s men’s basketball contest between the two schools,” the statement read, adding details regarding a rescheduled game would follow.

“Our thoughts are with all of those impacted by this tragedy.”

State police in New Mexico are leading the investigation.

The 6-foot-7 Peake is averaging 9.0 points and 3.5 rebounds in two games this season. He has a team-leading four blocked shots.

This is at least the third college game either postponed or called off because of campus gun violence this week.

Following the shooting deaths of three University of Virginia football players on Sunday, that school canceled its men’s basketball game on Monday against Northern Iowa. A mourning Cavaliers football team also called off its game Saturday against Coastal Carolina.

NCAAF News: Jawhar Jordan helps Louisville down No. 24 North Carolina State

Jawhar Jordan scored on a kickoff return and a short run from scrimmage as host Louisville overcame offensive shortcomings to defeat No. 24 North Carolina State 25-10 in Atlantic Coast Conference play on Saturday.

Both teams had changes at quarterback because of injuries and the Cardinals adjusted better to win for the fifth time in their last six games.

Jordan rushed for 105 yards on 16 carries.

Brock Domann, making his second career start for Louisville, completed 12 of 25 passes for 153 yards.

James Turner kicked four field goals for the Cardinals (7-4, 4-4 ACC)

NC State (7-4, 3-4) has lost consecutive games for the first time since 2020.

Quarterback Malik Cunningham of Louisville missed the game because of a shoulder injury sustained a week earlier at Clemson.

Ben Finley, younger brother of former NC State quarterback Ryan Finley, got most of the work in a reserve role for the Wolfpack. He completed 16 of 35 throws for 201 yards and a touchdown and one interception.

NC State went back to Jack Chambers as its starting quarterback after MJ Morris, who was the team’s third starter of the season, was still ailing from a week earlier. Then Finley came in later in the first half. So it has been a scramble at the quarterback position since ACC Preseason Player of the Year Devin Leary went down with a season-ending injury in early October.

NC State opened the second-half scoring on Finley’s 34-yard pass play to Michael Allen. The Wolfpack covered 87 in five plays to pull within 13-10.

Louisville began the scoring on Turner’s 26-yard field goal. Christopher Dunn matched it for NC State with a 30-yarder for his 21st consecutive made on what has been a perfect season.

But it wasn’t tied for long because Jordan returned the ensuing kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown. The wind knocked down the kick and Jordan picked up the ball after it rolled past him.

Turner’s 22-yarder on the last play of the first half made it 13-3.

NCAAF News: No. 11 Penn State crushes Rutgers, 55-10

Kobe King and Ji’Ayir Brown scored touchdowns off fumble recoveries and No. 11 Penn State scored 48 unanswered points and rolled to a 55-10 victory over host Rutgers on Saturday in Piscataway, N.J.

Penn State (9-2, 6-2 Big Ten) won its third straight as its defense continued to dominate, recording 15 tackles for loss and four sacks en route to its 16th straight win over Rutgers and 31st in 33 all-time meetings.

The Nittany Lions have 17 sacks during their winning streak.

The first fumble occurred late in the first quarter after Penn State trailed 10-7. On second-and-11, cornerback Marquis Wilson jarred the ball loose from wideout Johnny Langan, allowing King to easily recover and score from 14 yards out for a 14-10 lead.

The second fumble occurred in the opening minute of the second half on third-and-10. With Rutgers in the red zone, quarterback Gavin Wimsatt was strip-sacked and Brown easily recovered and scored from 70 yards out to make it 35-10.

Nicholas Singleton had a 100-yard kickoff return for Penn State’s first TD.

Kaytron Allen ran 11 times for 117 yards, including a 59-yard gain that set up his 8-yard TD run in the third quarter as the Nittany Lions outgained Rutgers 237-32 on the ground.

Sean Clifford completed 17-of-26 passes for 157 yards, including a 10-yard TD to Tyler Warren. He also had a 14-yard rushing TD late in the first half. Backup quarterback Drew Allar played the second half and also scored on a 1-yard TD in the fourth.

Wimsatt was 10 of 29 for 122 yards as Rutgers (4-7, 1-7) lost its fourth straight and is no longer bowl-eligible. The Scarlet Knights have been outscored 166-48 during the skid.

After Singleton’s kickoff return with 7:54 remaining, Aron Cruickshank set up Jones’ 4-yard TD with a 67-yard kickoff return but Penn State responded for a 14-10 lead on King’s fumble recovery in the final minute of the first.

The Nittany Lions held a 28-10 lead by halftime after Clifford found Warren and scored on a 14-yard run with 63 seconds remaining.

DePaul, Oklahoma St. meet in Bahamas consolation final

Neither DePaul nor Oklahoma State are satisfied with playing in Sunday’s consolation final of the Baha Mar Hoops championship in Nasaau, Bahamas, but the Cowboys probably have more of a case to be upset that they’re not in the title game.

With three seconds left in a tie game against UCF on Friday night, Oklahoma State went on a 2-on-1 fast break and Avery Anderson III threw an alley-oop for Moussa Cisse. But the pass was too low, Cisse couldn’t handle it and the game went into overtime — when UCF claimed a 60-56 victory.

“I’m incredibly disappointed,” said Oklahoma State coach Mike Boynton. “We put ourselves in great position early on and obviously played very, very poorly from a shooting standpoint. You can’t go 2 for 20 from 3 and win a high-level game.

“I can’t get away from the fact that we had several clear fast breaks that turned into zero points. Literally, at the end of regulation, we have a 2-on-1 I’ve seen connected on a hundred times at least. The game’s over right there. So it’s not just the 3s. It’s the missed layups also.

“This team doesn’t have a killer instinct yet at this point.”

But it does have a consistent big man in Cisse. He stacked up 14 points, 14 rebounds and 6 blocks against UCF — giving him three consecutive double-doubles. He’s averaging 10.3 points, 11.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocks per game.

While Oklahoma State (2-2) surrendered a 15-point second-half lead to fall into the consolation game, DePaul (3-1) had to deal with a 15-point halftime deficit in its 69-61 loss to Santa Clara.

“Our guys did a good job of fighting,” said DePaul coach Tony Stubblefield. “When you get beat 48-32 on the boards, it’s going to be tough to win games like that.

“We’ve got to get better. That’s the reality of it. We’ve got to have more ball movement. We only had 10 assists (against Santa Clara). I thought the ball was sticking. There’s a lot of areas where I feel we have to improve.”

With regards to the lack of ball movement, DePaul has been playing without injured starting point guard Caleb Murphy. In his absence, Oklahoma transfer Umoja Gibson has stepped up to run the offense.

Gibson, who is averaging 17.0 points and 6.5 assists, has experience dealing with Oklahoma State. In four OU-OSU matchups the last two seasons, Gibson averaged 10.5 points as the Cowboys took three of four.

Charleston Classic final pits Virginia Tech, Charleston

Most college hoops tournaments take place at neutral sites, but it will feel like a road game for Virginia Tech on Sunday at the Charleston Classic in Charleston, S.C.

Awaiting the Hokies (5-0) is the College of Charleston, as the mid-major Cougars (4-1) get a rare opportunity to take on an Atlantic Coast Conference team on their home floor.

“It’s a big opportunity for us,” Charleston guard Jaylon Scott said. “We’ve done a lot of hard work every day since we’ve been together this summer for the chance to go out and show what we can do against programs like that.”

Though the tournament is played on its home floor, Charleston is not the host. It is an ESPN owned and operated vehicle. This is the Cougars’ fourth appearance in the Classic, with their best finish (third) coming in the inaugural event in 2008.

The Hokies took the title in their only previous appearance in 2018, beating Purdue in the final in coach Buzz Williams’ final season at Tech.

Now it’s his successor, Mike Young, who gets a chance to collect another title after winning the ACC tournament last season. He also will face Charleston, a program that courted him twice during his 17-year tenure at another South Carolina school, Wofford.

Young has built the Hokies into an efficient offensive force. They entered Saturday ranked No. 13 in points per possession (1.20).

In Friday’s 61-59 win over Penn State however, Tech had to grind out a defensive struggle as they made only 3 of 19 shots (15.8 percent) from beyond the arc.

Of the Hokies’ 26 baskets, 20 came from the paint as forwards Grant Basile (17 points) and Justyn Mutts (10 points, 12 rebounds) took advantage of the Nittany Lions’ small frontcourt.

“We have a lot of great shooters as well as a lot of big guys who can score down low, so I think being able to mix it up is what makes this team so special,” Mutts said.

Charleston advanced with a 74-64 victory over Colorado State on Friday night as Scott (12 points) was one of five Cougars in double figures.

Coach Pat Kelsey’s Cougars have been tested. All of their opponents so far, including the Hokies, made the NCAA Tournament last season. Their lone loss came at No. 1 North Carolina, 102-86, after they led by seven at the break.

NCAAF News: No. 9 Clemson scores early, often in easy win over Miami

DJ Uiagalelei passed for 227 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for a game- and career-high 89 yards and a score as host Clemson jumped on Miami early and cruised to a 40-10 victory in an Atlantic Coast Conference clash on Saturday.

The win gave the No. 9 Tigers (10-1, 8-0 ACC) their 12th consecutive season with at least 10 victories in addition to extending their home-field winning streak to an ACC-record 40 consecutive games. It is the ninth time in the program’s history the Tigers have finished undefeated in ACC play.

They end their regular season next Saturday with a nonconference matchup against South Carolina and will play North Carolina in the ACC championship game on Dec. 3.

The Hurricanes (5-6, 3-4) now need to win their finale at home against Pittsburgh to reach bowl eligibility.

The Tigers held the Hurricanes to 98 yards of total offense with only 30 coming on the ground, both season lows.

Freshman Jacurri Brown, who engineered Miami’s 35-14 win over Georgia Tech last week, struggled in his second start, going just 6-of-13 passing for 53 yards while rushing for just 22 more yards.

Jake Garcia started the fourth quarter and threw a 1-yard pass to Kahlil Brantley for Miami’s only touchdown after Jordan Miller’s 26-yard return of Uiagalelei’s fumble set up the Hurricanes at Clemson’s 10-yard line.

Uiagalelei was 14-of-19 passing for 128 yards in the first half and finished the game 22 of 34 with an interception. The Tigers had only scored a safety in the second half until Will Shipley’s 3-yard touchdown run with 4:40 remaining. Kobe Pace also scored from 1 yard out with 16 seconds left following Trenton Simpson’s strip sack of Garcia at Miami’s 36-yard line.

The Tigers established their defensive dominance early. They held the Hurricanes without a first down in the first quarter and to only 8 yards of total offense for the first half.

Clemson scored touchdowns on three of its first four possessions to put the Hurricanes in an insurmountable hole. The Tigers finished with 447 total yards, including 207 rushing.

NCAAF News: No. 2 Ohio State fends off pesky Maryland, 43-30

Dallan Hayden ran for three touchdowns as No. 2 Ohio State held off host Maryland 43-30 in College Park, Md., on Saturday.

Hayden, taking over when TreVeyon Henderson was reinjured, ran for 146 yards on 27 carries for the Buckeyes (11-0, 8-0 Big Ten). Quarterback C.J. Stroud was 18-of-30 passing for 241 yards and a touchdown.

Tulia Tagovailoa was 26 of 36 for 293 yards and three touchdowns for Maryland (6-5, 3-5).

Trailing by three in the third quarter, Ohio State safety Lathan Ransom blocked a punt for the second straight game, giving the Buckeyes the ball at the Maryland 14. Two plays later, Hayden rushed for an 8-yard TD to make it 17-13.

Noah Ruggles added a 47-yard field goal for 20-13 lead and Hayden ran for a 3-yard TD run with 16 seconds left in the third quarter for a 27-13 lead.

Tagovailoa ran for a 5-yard TD and passed for a 2-point conversion to Jacob Copeland to make it 27-21 early in the fourth quarter. After Hayden’s 13-yard touchdown, the Terrapins blocked the extra point and Jakorian Bennett returned it for two points and a 33-23 score.

Maryland pulled to within 33-30 on a fourth-down 1-yard catch by Jeshaun Jones with 9:49 left.

The Buckeyes chewed up 5:12 of the clock and Ruggles kicked a 45-yard field goal with 42 seconds left. Steele Chambers scooped up a fumble by Tagovailoa and scored from 1 yard out for the final score with nine seconds left.

Maryland led 13-10 at halftime on the strength of Tagovailoa’s 16 of 18 for 131 yards and a touchdown, a 1-yarder to CJ Dippre for the go-ahead score with 3:52 left in the second quarter.

Ohio State opened the scoring on their first possession, going 75 yards in six plays, capped by a 31-yard screen pass to Henderson.

Maryland has never beaten Ohio State in seven games since joining the Big Ten in 2014. The last time the series was played at Maryland, in 2018, the heavily favored Buckeyes won 52-51 in overtime when the Terrapins failed on a 2-point conversion.

No. 12 Indiana continues busy stretch vs. Miami (OH)

It took No. 12 Indiana nearly two weeks to play three games.

Now, the Hoosiers are in a stretch where they’ll play four in a span of a week.

The second of those four games will come on Sunday when they face Miami (Ohio) in Indianapolis.

Indiana (3-0) is coming off a gutsy performance in Friday’s 81-79 win at Xavier in front of a sellout crowd.

“The schedule is what it is,” Indiana coach Mike Woodson said after the win. “We can’t run from it, man. We’ve got a game Sunday. We’ll go back home and break this tape down and prepare for Miami of Ohio and get ready to play Sunday. You just take them a game at a time and a practice at a time. That’s all you can do.”

It might be early, but Indiana is delivering on high expectations to start the year.

Forward Trayce Jackson-Davis has lived up to his billing as the Preseason Big Ten Player of the Year and an All-American candidate, averaging 22.0 points and 6.3 rebounds a game.

He scored 30 points in the win over Xavier.

Senior guard Xavier Johnson got off to a slow start, but really came on against Xavier, scoring 23 points and showing why he’ll be one of the Big Ten’s best guards this year.

“They were tremendous, and I say that because they hadn’t really practiced the last three, four, five days,” Woodson said. “Under the weather, little nicks in there.”

Indiana will finish its busy week with home games against Little Rock on Wednesday and Jackson State on Friday.

Indiana first must focus on a Miami squad that enters 1-3 after a 95-69 home loss to Marshall on Thursday.

The game was a step back for the RedHawks after playing Georgia tough on the road on Monday before losing 77-70.

However, little went right against Marshall.

“I told our guys that I was absolutely embarrassed by the performance (Thursday),” coach Travis Steele said after the Marshall game. “Not embarrassed by the result of losing the game, but embarrassed by the response. All of a sudden a couple of 3s went in, and all of a sudden our team splintered apart.”

Miami was picked to finish 11th in the preseason Mid-American Conference poll.

The RedHawks have been led by Mekhi Lairy, who is averaging 16.5 points per game, Anderson Mirambeaux (15.8), Morgan Safford (12.0) and Julian Lewis (12.0).

“Defense can keep you in games when you have off-shooting nights,” Steele said. “It keeps you in games. Defense, rebounding and taking care of the ball. Those three things always win. Always have and always will. We’ve got to be more concerned with that than with shooting.”

The RedHawks committed 18 turnovers and shot 18.8 percent (6 of 32) from 3-point range against the Thundering Herd. Marshall had 12 steals and blocked seven shots.

NCAAF News: No. 1 Georgia grinds to 11-0 with road win over Kentucky

More efficient than spectacular, top-ranked Georgia closed out a perfect run through its Southeastern Conference schedule Saturday with a 16-6 win over Kentucky in Lexington, Ky.

The Bulldogs (11-0, 8-0 SEC) never really pulled away from the Wildcats (6-5, 3-5) but were never really threatened. Georgia scored on all three of its first-half possessions, although all were field goals, and finally tacked on a touchdown with a 9-yard run by Kenny McIntosh at the 6:22 mark of the third quarter.

Kentucky’s only points came when Will Levis threw an 8-yard scoring strike to Barion Brown with 9:52 left in the game. But the Wildcats weren’t able to convert on a two-point pass that could have brought them within a score.

Kentucky missed on another chance to draw within one possession when a bad snap led to a poor hold with the laces facing the kicker, causing Matt Ruffalo to hook a 38-yard field goal wide left with 4:17 remaining.

It was the second straight year that the Bulldogs ran through the SEC undefeated. They won this game with defense and the running game. They outgained the Wildcats 247-89 on the ground, limiting Kentucky’s star back Chris Rodriguez Jr. to 51 yards on 17 attempts.

Levis completed 20 of 31 passes for 206 yards and an interception. Brown was his main target with 10 catches for 145 yards.

Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett didn’t have much of an impact, hitting 13 of 19 passes for 116 yards with an interception. But McIntosh took up slack with 143 yards on 19 rushes.

Jack Podlesny accounted for all the first-half points for the Bulldogs, connecting on field goals of 27, 24 and 37 yards. Georgia hogged the ball for just over five minutes on each of its first two drives before squeezing 11 plays and 56 yards into the half’s final 2:03.

The Bulldogs outgained Kentucky 363-295 but were held to fewer than 26 points for the first time this season.

NC State improves to 4-0 with win over Elon

Jack Clark scored 21 points and NC State remained unbeaten with a solid defensive effort in Saturday’s 74-63 win over visiting Elon in Raleigh, N.C.

Terquavion Smith added 16 points and Casey Morsell posted 15 points for the Wolfpack (4-0).

Elon shot 38.3 percent from the field and missed 17 of its 24 shots from 3-point distance, hurting its chances to pull an upset.

Torrence Watson’s 20 points led the Phoenix (1-4), who have lost four straight since a season-opening win against Division II Erskine. Max Mackinnon added 11 points and Sean Halloran had nine points and six assists. Watson sank 4 of 7 shots from 3-point range and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

NC State ended its four-game homestand. Next up is defending national champion Kansas in the Battle for Atlantis on Wednesday.

Four Wolfpack starters connected on at least one 3-point shot, led by Smith with four. Even with that production they were held far below their average of 93 points per game through the first three contests.

Clark was 9 of 18 from the field with three 3-pointers to go with nine rebounds. NC State attempted just six free throws and had only 14 assists on its 29 field goals.

Dusan Mahorcic’s nine points and 13 rebounds gave NC State a boost. Wolfpack reserves combined for only six points on 1-of-12 shooting.

Elon was within 58-53 before Morsell’s 3-pointer with about seven minutes to play. Watson’s 3 and Zac Ervin’s layup kept the Phoenix in range at 63-58.

The Wolfpack built the lead back to double digits at 69-59 on Morsell’s jumper with 2:48 to play.

NC State led 37-27 at halftime. Morsell scored the team’s last five points of the half, including a 3-pointer right before the buzzer.
