NFL News: Eagles sign free agent DT Ndamukong Suh to 1-year deal

The Philadelphia Eagles agreed to terms with free agent and three-time All-Pro defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh on a one-year contract Thursday.

Financial terms were not disclosed by the Eagles, who signed veteran defensive lineman Linval Joseph to a one-year deal on Wednesday.

Suh, 35, played the last three seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and became a free agent in March.

He started all 17 games in 2021 and contributed 27 tackles, 13 quarterback hits, six sacks and one fumble recovery.

A five-time Pro Bowl selection, Suh has 70.5 sacks and nine fumble recoveries (three for touchdowns) in 191 games (all starts) with the Detroit Lions (2010-14), Miami Dolphins (2015-17), Los Angeles Rams (2018) and Bucs.

The Eagles signed Joseph in response to defensive tackle Marlon Tuipulotu being placed on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury.

Cavaliers, Hornets out to snap losing streaks

It is hard to determine if the Charlotte Hornets or Cleveland Cavaliers are in more desperate shape for as they prepare to meet Friday night.

The Hornets have won just one of their past 10 games and one of their star players will be out again.

Cleveland, beginning a four-game homestand, is mired in a five-game losing streak.

For Charlotte, point guard LaMelo Ball was in his first home game of the season Wednesday night as the Hornets were enduring another late-game collapse. He landed on a fan’s foot with 1 minute, 34 seconds left in the 125-113 loss to the Indiana Pacers.

He rolled the same ankle that forced him to miss the first 13 games of the season and has been ruled out of the Cavaliers game.

“At the end of the day, it’s part of the game,” P.J. Washington said of Charlotte’s injuries. “We all know at some point everybody is going to get back out there, and we can’t wait for it.”

Cleveland has issues that surfaced in a 113-98 road loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday. The Cavaliers’ skid has come after an eight-game winning streak.

“We’re not playing winning basketball right now, and it’s that simple,” Cavaliers coach J.B. Bickerstaff said.

The game against Charlotte will be just the second home outing for the Cavaliers in more than two weeks. They will play four home games across six nights, but even a more welcoming setting won’t be an automatic solution for the Cavaliers.

“We have a formula in place that will allow us to be successful,” Bickerstaff said. “Holding each other to that is what we have to do. Right now, we are not.”

Bickerstaff has hinted at lineup changes or role adjustments.

“It’s my responsibility to search and find the guys who are most willing to play the way we need to play,” he said.

And Charlotte, again, is left without Ball, at least for now. He racked up 26 points Wednesday night before exiting with the injury.

“Right now, the problem is we’re losing games,” Washington said. “So we’ve got to figure it out and start getting some wins.”

Ball seemed to get the Hornets going in the right direction from an offensive standpoint. That alone wasn’t putting Charlotte back on track.

“Both sides of the ball, we couldn’t stop them,” Hornets coach Steve Clifford said. “We were always a step behind. (The Bucks are) the second-best offensive team in the league, and we couldn’t stop them.”

So facing the Cavaliers next could be a blessing for the Hornets. Cleveland was stuck with a season-low point total in the Milwaukee game — the first time the Cavaliers failed to reach 100 points this season. That also was the first time the Cavaliers suffered a loss by more than seven points this season.

Cleveland forward Kevin Love reached a notable mark by moving to third place on the Cavaliers franchise’s all-time list for defensive rebounds by snatching his 3,569th board. Love has been coming off the bench, averaging 21.9 minutes, 11.6 points and 7.3 rebounds in eight games this month.

The Cavaliers have additional woes with the announcement that Dylan Windler, who has yet to play this season because of a sprained right ankle, will be out at least another month. He had a platelet-rich plasma injection and was put in a walking cast.

NFL News: NFL relocating Bills-Browns game to Detroit with storm looming

The NFL is moving the game between the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns to Detroit on Sunday with projections of feet of snow set to blanket western New York in the coming days.

The league said the move was made due to “public safety concerns and out of an abundance of caution in light of the ongoing weather emergency” in the region.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning that runs from 7 p.m. Thursday to 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon in the Buffalo area, with up to 4 feet of snow expected. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for the area in advance of the pending storm.

Now, the teams will play at Ford Field in Detroit. The Lions play their Week 11 game in East Rutherford, N.J., against the Giants, where cold but dry conditions are forecast for Sunday.

Bills coach Sean McDermott said Wednesday that the organization had multiple contingency plans in place to attempt to keep players and staff on schedule but safe. Some weather models showed historic levels of snow before Sunday that would complicate travel and potentially eliminate air travel into or out of Buffalo.

Moving a game to reduce risk of teams and fans in winter weather is not without precedent.

In 2014, the Bills and New York Jets had a scheduled Sunday afternoon game moved to Detroit as multiple feet of snow fell on Buffalo. The NFL moved the day of the game to Monday night to afford the teams time to practice.

It was not immediately clear when the Bills would depart for Detroit with the storm’s arrival imminent.

The Bills are scheduled to play on Thanksgiving Day in Detroit, as well, meaning they will play two games at Ford Field in five days.

Hornets G LaMelo Ball out Friday with ankle injury

Playing in his first home game this season, Hornets guard LaMelo Ball re-injured his left ankle on Wednesday when he landed on a fan’s foot with 1 minute, 34 seconds left in the 125-113 loss to the Indiana Pacers.

X-rays postgame were negative, but Charlotte ruled Ball out for Friday’s game at Cleveland. He is likely to miss multiple games.

Ball was hustling to save a ball near the sideline and stepped on the foot of a fan seated courtside in Charlotte, rolling the same ankle that forced him to miss the first 13 games of the season.

Charlotte (4-12) has lost nine of its last 10 games with Ball and Terry Rozier (ankle) missing significant time and Gordon Hayward (shoulder) out for the past eight games.

Just three games into his return from the injury, Ball did not meet with media after the game and head coach Steve Clifford said no update on his status was provided by the Hornets’ medical staff.

“He was great tonight,” Clifford said.

Ball had 26 points, including five 3-pointers, and six assists in the loss.

NFL News: Bills, Browns shifted to Detroit for Week 11 duel

Here’s the scoop: Too much snow in Buffalo forced the NFL to shovel the Bills and Cleveland Browns to an alternate game site. They’ll square off in Detroit for their scheduled Week 11 game on Sunday.

The Bills are also scheduled to play at Ford Field on Thanksgiving Day, giving them two games in five days at Detroit.

Historical accumulation measured in feet was forecast for western New York before midday Saturday, creating a string of logistics and safety concerns for the team, league and region.

“Due to public safety concerns and out of an abundance of caution in light of the ongoing weather emergency in western New York, Sunday’s Cleveland Browns-Buffalo Bills game will be moved to Ford Field in Detroit at 1 p.m. ET,” the NFL said in a statement Thursday. “The decision to move the game from Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y. was done in consultation with the Buffalo Bills and local and state authorities as the region prepares for the storm.”

When the teams hit the field Sunday, the Bills (6-3) will look to halt a two-game skid and the Browns (3-6) will attempt to ignite fading postseason hopes. But in the mind of Cleveland starting quarterback Jacoby Brissett, the shift to Ford Field should be a positive.

His last snow game in Buffalo, then as quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts, didn’t go so great in a 13-7 loss.

“I don’t want to talk about the results of the game,” Brissett said when reminded of that cold day when he completed 11 of 22 passes for 69 yards and one touchdown.

Asked how players can deal with so much snow, Brissett said, “I’m from Florida, so no, I wouldn’t know. I’m the wrong person to ask. I really won’t think about it.”

Coaches began needling their own alternate plans on Tuesday when the NFL and Erie County officials began discussing contingency plans.

“We’ve already started to put a plan in place behind the scenes of what happens if we can’t get in Friday, what happens if we can’t get in Saturday or to the hotel Saturday evening (where the team stays the night before games) with that being downtown,” Buffalo coach Sean McDermott said.

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said Wednesday, “I wouldn’t say (we have) two separate game plans, but when weather is a factor as it might be, you’re always thinking about having plays that you might turn to should it be a major factor.”

Allen was a limited practice participant on Wednesday in a practice switched to individual and position work due to a shortage of available players. Allen is still experiencing soreness in his throwing elbow.

Allen has thrown two interceptions in each of the past three games. He did pass for 330 yards and one touchdown in last week against the Vikings, but his turnovers, including a lost fumble, were key to Minnesota’s comeback for a 33-30 overtime win.

Allen said he has been spending hours daily with trainers and the strength and conditioning staff.

“It’ll get to a point where it’s back to normal and I don’t feel it and don’t have to worry about it,” Allen said. “But until that time comes, just being smart with it and making sure I’m not doing anything stupid in walkthroughs, not throwing it very hard and just staying in the training room and still getting treatment on it.”

Allen has passed for 2,733 yards, 20 touchdowns and 10 interceptions and added 476 yards and four TDs on the ground to help the Bills lead the NFL in total offense (424.1 yards per game) and rank second in scoring (27.8 per game).

Bills wideout Stefon Diggs is 15 yards away from his fifth consecutive 1,000-yard season.

Cleveland running back Nick Chubb ranks third in the NFL with 904 rushing yards and has scored 11 times on the ground. Brissett has passed for 2,074 yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions.

Browns standout offensive tackle Jack Conklin (foot) was a full practice participant Wednesday and is expected to play.

Buffalo safety Jordan Poyer (elbow) was limited in practice on Wednesday while middle linebacker Tremaine Edmunds (groin, heel) was among those who sat out.

The Bills have won four of their past six meetings with the Browns.

MLS News: Union agree to transfer Paxten Aaronson to Frankfurt

0

The Philadelphia Union agreed to transfer homegrown midfielder Paxten Aaronson on Thursday to German side Eintracht Frankfurt of Bundesliga for a multimillion-dollar transfer fee.

The Union will also retain a percentage of any future transfer fees for Aaronson, who will join Frankfurt in January.

“Paxten has accomplished so much in a short amount of time. He has worked incredibly hard, and he has taken advantage of every opportunity with the first team, Union II and the U-20 National Team,” Union sporting director Ernst Tanner said in a news release. “There has been interest in him for a long time, and we feel this is the right move for the club and the player, putting him in a good situation to continue developing in one the best leagues in the world.”

Aaronson, 19, tallied four goals in 37 matches (seven starts) in two seasons with the Union. He made his MLS debut in May 2021.

MLB News: Mariners send Kyle Lewis to D-backs for Cooper Hummel

The Seattle Mariners dealt outfielder Kyle Lewis to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday in exchange for catcher/outfielder Cooper Hummel.

Lewis, 27, was the American League Rookie of the Year for the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, when he batted .262 and hit 11 home runs and 28 RBIs in 58 games.

In the two seasons since then, he’s appeared in 54 games due to injuries and ineffectiveness. He batted .143 (8-for-56) across 18 appearances last season. The 11th overall pick by the Mariners in the 2020 draft, Lewis is a career .244 hitter with 25 home runs and 57 RBIs in 130 games.

Hummel, who turns 28 on Nov. 28, played 66 games for Arizona as a rookie in 2022. He batted .176 with three home runs, three triples and 17 RBIs. He caught parts of 18 games (14 starts) and also played left field, right field and designated hitter.

MLB News: Aaron Judge runs away with American League MVP

Aaron Judge was named American League Most Valuable Player on Thursday night, capping a historic season during which he broke the league’s single-season home run record.

Judge received 28 first-place votes from the panel of 30 Baseball Writers’ Association of America voters, with the other two going to Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels. Judge finished with 410 total points in voting, Ohtani had 280 and Yordan Alvarez of the Houston Astros was third with 232.

Judge, 30, hit his 62nd homer on the second-to-last night of the regular season to surpass Roger Maris’ long-standing AL mark of 61.

In his seventh season with the New York Yankees, Judge also led the major leagues in RBIs (131), runs (133), on-base percentage (.425) and slugging percentage (.686). He led the AL with 111 walks and ranked second with a .311 batting average. In the field, he did not commit an error.

“It’s tough to put to words,” Judge said on MLB Network. “It’s an incredible, incredible moment. A lot of hard work throughout the years to get to this point. I got a lot of people to thank. I go all the way back to coaches in travel ball, to Little League, high school, college, guys I’ve worked with through the minor leagues, major league. I always feel like any award you get, it’s never an individual award. It’s a team effort through and through.”

Judge has since hit free agency and is expected to command a massive contract, whether from the Yankees or another club.

Judge was second in MVP voting in 2017 and fourth last year. Now he’s become the first Yankee since Alex Rodriguez (2005, 2007) to win the award.

He said he only had a chance to reflect on his season after New York’s season had ended.

“I was trying to grind the year out all year,” Judge said. “I was focused on trying to win games for the Yankees and do whatever I can for that game, tonight. Win and wake up and do the same thing the next day. So it was tough to really enjoy it because of the ups and downs throughout the year. You’re chasing the division, you’re chasing a good spot in the postseason.”

The Yankees won the AL East at 99-63 with Judge carrying their offense through the second half of the season. They reached the ALCS, where they were swept by the Houston Astros in four games.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone released prepared statements congratulating Judge on the award.

“He was incredible in every facet of the game in 2022 and put up a season that ranks with the very best of all time,” Cashman said. “Aaron’s success was especially meaningful for our organization as we’ve been able to watch him grow throughout his professional career into the player and leader he has become — an offensive force in the batter’s box, a run preventer wherever we’ve put him in the field and someone who sets the tone in the clubhouse with his relentless commitment to winning. He has been our MVP for quite some time now, and this honor couldn’t be more deserved.”

New York has had 23 MVP winners all-time, with the list also including Babe Ruth (1923), Lou Gehrig (1927, 1936), Joe DiMaggio (1939, 1941, 1947), Joe Gordon (1942), Spud Chandler (1943), Phil Rizzuto (1950), Yogi Berra (1954, 1955), Mickey Mantle (1956, 1957, 1962), Maris (1960, 1961), Elston Howard (1963), Thurman Munson (1976) and Don Mattingly (1985).

Ohtani, the defending AL MVP, was in the conversation to repeat despite Judge making history. The two-way star went 15-9 with a 2.33 ERA and 219 strikeouts and garnered him fourth place in Cy Young Award voting. He added 34 home runs and 95 RBIs with a .273 batting average and a .519 slugging percentage.

MLB News: Paul Goldschmidt wins National League MVP honors

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt won the National League MVP award for the first time in his career, it was announced Thursday on the MLB Network.

Goldschmidt received 22 first-place votes and 380 points in balloting by 30 Baseball Writers Association of America voters. San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado (291) received seven first-place votes and was second and the Cardinals’ Nolan Arenado (232) was third and received the other first-place vote.

“It’s a great honor. It isn’t just about me,” Goldschmidt said on the MLB Network. “it’s about the teammates that I have and the coaches and guys I played with in the past. I’ve learned a lot from a lot of different players and I think it means a lot to all of those people and I hope they know the effect they’ve had on my career.”

Goldschmidt has been MVP runner-up twice before (2013, 2015) and third another time (2017) during his eight seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks. But his fourth season with the Cardinals was the breakthrough campaign.

Goldschmidt, 35, led the National League in slugging (.578) and batted .317 with 35 homers, 115 RBIs and 106 runs.

The seven-time All-Star topped 30 homers for the seventh time in his career and the century mark for the fourth time.

“I want to find a way to still be a good or great player and find way to perform,” Goldschmidt said of moving toward the twilight of his career. “And try to win. Just find ways to get better as I get older.”

Goldschmidt’s achievement gives St. Louis an NL-most 18 MVP winners.

The other Cardinals to be named MVP include three-time winners Stan Musial (1943, 1946, 1948) and Albert Pujols (2005, 2008-09).

Winning once were Frankie Frisch (1931), Dizzy Dean (1934), Joe Medwick (1937), Mort Cooper (1942), Marty Marion (1944), Ken Boyer (1964), Orlando Cepeda (1967), Bob Gibson (1968), Joe Torre (1971), Keith Hernandez (1979, co-winner with Willie Stargell) and Willie McGee (1985).

Machado, 30, batted .298 with 32 homers and 102 RBIs while helping the Padres reach the NL Championship Series. He was the leader for San Diego after the club didn’t have star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. for the entire season.

The six-time All-Star recorded his sixth 30-homer campaign and topped 100 RBIs for the third time.

Arenado, 31, batted .293 with 30 homers and 103 RBIs and also won his 10th consecutive Gold Glove award.

The seven-time All-Star topped 30 homers and 100 RBIs in the same season for the seventh time.

Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman (220) placed fourth and teammate Mookie Betts (154) was fifth.

MLB News: Marlins hire Jeff Conine as special assistant to owner

The Miami Marlins named “Mr. Marlin” Jeff Conine to the post of special assistant to the owner on Thursday.

Conine, 56, will work closely with Marlins owner Bruce Sherman “on a variety of projects, initiatives and key matters pertaining to the Marlins’ operations,” the team said in a press release.

“Jeff is an icon of the Marlins organization, and we are excited to bring him back ‘home,'” Sherman said. “His perspective and knowledge of the history of the Marlins franchise and the South Florida community will be invaluable.”

Conine spent eight of his 17 years in baseball with the then-Florida Marlins, from 1993-97 and then again from 2003-05. He won two World Series with the Marlins, in 1997 and 2003.

A career .285 hitter, Conine batted .290 with 120 home runs and 553 RBIs in 1,014 career games as a Marlin.
