NFL News: Titans OL Ben Jones among starters ruled out vs. Pack

Tennessee Titans center Ben Jones (concussion) and kicker Randy Bullock (calf) are among four starters ruled out for Thursday night’s game against the Green Bay Packers.

The team on Wednesday also ruled out safety Amani Hooker (shoulder) and outside linebacker Bud Dupree (hip). Backup safety Lonnie Johnson Jr. (hamstring) has also been ruled out for the Week 11 opener.

Jones had started every game this season. This will be the second consecutive game missed for Dupree, while Hooker hasn’t played since Week 8.

The Titans tabbed journeyman Josh Lambo to replace Bullock. The team promoted Lambo to the 53-man roster on Wednesday. The Titans signed Lambo to the practice squad on Tuesday. It’ll mark Lambo’s first action in 2022.

Also, starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill has been removed from the injury report after two consecutive days of full participation in practice. He played last week for the first time in three weeks after injuring his ankle.

The Titans also waived wide receiver Chris Conley.

Bullock suffered a right (kicking leg) calf injury in last week’s game.

In 78 career games, Lambo has made 87.1 percent of his field goal tries and 89.9 percent of his PATs.

Lambo learned Wednesday that a judge dismissed his lawsuit against his former team, the Jacksonville Jaguars. Lambo filed suit in May, alleging that former coach Urban Meyer created a hostile work environment that contributed to Lambo’s on-field performance dropping. Lambo alleged that Meyer kicked him and swore at him while he was working out in August 2021 before the Jaguars’ preseason finale.

Lambo’s attorney, Betsy Brown, told ESPN on Wednesday that they intend to file an amended complaint.

The Titans elevated linebacker Joe Schobert and defensive lineman Larrell Murchison to the 53-man roster from the practice squad on Tuesday.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s late 3-pointer lifts Thunder past Wizards

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander capped a 42-point performance by draining a 3-pointer with 1.9 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to lift the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder to a 121-120 victory over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday.

Gilgeous-Alexander’s heroics came on the heels of Bradley Beal sinking a fadeaway jumper near the baseline that gave Washington a 120-118 lead with 6.7 seconds remaining.

Gilgeous-Alexander also had seven assists and six rebounds. He made 14 of 22 shots from the floor and 12 of 17 from the foul line.

Luguentz Dort scored 16 points and Josh Giddey added 11 points and six rebounds for the Thunder, who overcame 17- and 16-point deficits to record their third win in four games.

Oklahoma City shot a robust 54.3 percent from the floor (44 of 81) and 51.6 percent from 3-point range (16 of 31).

Kristaps Porzingis collected 27 points and nine rebounds and Beal scored 15 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter. Beal was making his return from a five-game absence due to NBA health and safety protocols.

Kyle Kuzma recorded 18 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists for the Wizards, who saw their four-game winning streak come to a halt.

Rui Hachimura scored 14 points off the bench for Washington.

Washington built a 31-14 lead in the first quarter due in large part to its sharp shooting from the perimeter. Gilgeous-Alexander scored seven points in just over one minute late in the quarter to spark Oklahoma City, which erased the deficit by pulling even at 37-37 early in the second.

The Wizards once again found their stroke from the perimeter to build a 16-point lead in the second and they claimed a 67-54 advantage at halftime. The Thunder countered as Gilgeous-Alexander scored 19 points during the third quarter to give his team a two-point advantage.

NFL News: Reports: Texans claim Amari Rodgers off waivers

The Houston Texans claimed return specialist Amari Rodgers off waivers Wednesday, one day after he was released by the Green Bay Packers, multiple outlets reported.

It’s the second consecutive day the Texans have claimed another team’s castoff. The Texans claimed running back Eno Benjamin off waivers Tuesday from the Arizona Cardinals.

Rodgers was a third-round pick (85th overall) in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Rodgers fumbled four times on special teams this season, including one that set up a Dallas Cowboys touchdown on Sunday.

He played in 26 games over two seasons, catching eight passes for 95 yards. He returned 40 punts for 305 yards and 17 kickoffs for 321 yards.

T-Wolves cruise past Magic on Anthony Edwards’ season-high 35

Anthony Edwards scored a season-high 35 points, Karl-Anthony Towns added 30 and the Minnesota Timberwolves led wire-to-wire en route to their second straight road win, 126-108, Wednesday over the host Orlando Magic.

Minnesota — playing the third game of a four-game road swing — jumped out in front of Orlando early and led 42-24 at the end of the first quarter.

Unlike their win Sunday at Cleveland, when they raced ahead by 24 points only to hold off a late Cavaliers’ surge to win by five points, the Timberwolves weathered the Magic’s second-half effort to maintain a sizable lead throughout.

Edwards and Towns set the tone offensively, combining to shoot 22 of 35 from the floor, as Minnesota shot 46-for-88 (52.3 percent) from the floor as a team.

All five Timberwolves starters scored in double figures with Rudy Gobert recording 16 points, D’Angelo Russell finishing with 11 points and Jaden McDaniels chipping in 10 points. Each of Gobert, McDaniels and Edwards grabbed eight rebounds, with Edwards also matching Russell’s game-high of six assists.

The offensive outburst was the second in as many games for Minnesota, which on Sunday matched its second-highest scoring output of the season with its 129 points. Wednesday’s 126 points tied the Timberwolves’ fourth-highest scoring game of 2022-23.

For Orlando, the loss ends the Magic’s seven-game homestand a game below .500 at 3-4. Bol Bol set the pace in the loss with 26 points, taking over primary scoring duties with standout rookie and Orlando’s leading scorer thus far on the season, Paolo Banchero, missing his fourth straight game due to an ankle injury.

Bol recorded a double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds. Mo Bamba grabbed another 10 rebounds to go with eight points, while Jalen Suggs finished with 23 points, six rebounds and six assists.

Franz Wagner added 18 points with six rebounds and four assists.

The Magic outrebounded the Timberwolves 53-48 and converted a 20-11 advantage in second-chance points. However, Orlando could not overcome coughing up 16 turnovers — 15 of which came off Minnesota steals — that contributed to the Timberwolves’ 30-9 advantage in fast-break points.

NFL News: Cardinals WR Marquise Brown (foot) returns to practice

The Arizona Cardinals designated wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown for return from injured reserve Wednesday, opening his 21-day practice window.

Brown sustained a small non-surgical fracture in his foot on the final play of the game Oct. 16 against Seattle. Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury said Wednesday that there’s a “chance” Brown will be activated to play Monday night against the San Francisco 49ers.

As for which quarterback could potentially throw to Brown on Monday, Kingsbury said he hopes to have one of them — starter Kyler Murray or backup Colt McCoy — ready to go. The coach said both QBs remain day-to-day.

Murray missed last Sunday with a hamstring injury. McCoy earned the start, but he, too, left the game with a leg injury. Trace McSorley came on to close out the 27-17 win for the Cardinals.

“He’s progressed well,” Kingsbury said Wednesday regarding Murray. “He’s still getting treatment on it. We want him to be 100 percent when he’s out there, particularly against this defensive line. So I won’t have a feel for that until later in the week.”

Brown, 25, has 43 catches for 485 yards and three touchdowns in six games (all starts).

The Cardinals acquired Robbie Anderson from Carolina to bolster the team’s wide receiver corps in Brown’s absence. Anderson, however, has one catch for minus-4 yards in four games (one start) for the Cardinals.

Kingsbury also confirmed reports from earlier in the week that tight end Zach Ertz will miss the rest of the season. Ertz was carted off during last week’s win over the Los Angeles Rams after sustaining a leg injury.

The Cardinals on Wednesday also signed offensive lineman Julien Davenport and tight end Chris Pierce Jr. to their practice squad.

MLS News: FC Dallas sign D Nolan Norris to homegrown deal

0

FC Dallas signed 17-year-old defender Nolan Norris to a three-year homegrown contract on Wednesday.

Financial terms were not disclosed for the deal, which comes with club options for the 2026 and 2027 seasons.

Norris becomes the club’s league-tying 35th homegrown player. He currently plays for the FC Dallas U-19 Academy team.

“I’m blessed, since I joined the academy at the age of 12 this is something I’ve envisioned since that day,” Norris said. “And for this to come true, it’s just a testament to the hard work and all the support my coaches, teammates and everybody that’s put into me. And the hard work starts now.”

Tyrese Haliburton propels Pacers past Hornets

Tyrese Haliburton had 22 points in a duel between two young point guards to help the Indiana Pacers to a 125-113 road victory against the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday night.

Haliburton also recorded 11 assists and had a role in ruining the season home debut for Charlotte point guard LaMelo Ball.

Indiana’s Myles Turner had big moments in the lane with 20 points and 10 rebounds, and reserve Bennedict Mathurin also had 20 points. Buddy Hield added 19 points, Andrew Nembhard had 13 points and Jalen Smith finished with 11 points to boost Indiana to its sixth triumph in the past eight games.

Ball ended up with 26 points on 10-for-17 shooting from the field, making five of his eight 3-point attempts, to go with six assists. But it wasn’t enough to generate back-to-back victories for the Hornets, who have dropped nine of their past 10 games.

P.J. Washington racked up 24 points for Charlotte, and Kelly Oubre Jr. supplied 17 points (despite 1-for-7 shooting from 3-point range) and 13 rebounds. Terry Rozier had 17 points and eight assists while Mason Plumlee finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds for Charlotte, which was outscored 35-23 in the fourth quarter.

The Hornets made 12 of 33 3-point attempts but were hurt by 17 turnovers. In addition, their defense wasn’t up to the task against an Indiana team that shot 53.7 percent from the field.

There were back-and-forth stretches in the fourth quarter. The Pacers went from up five to down two in less than 2 1/2 minutes.

Then the visitors rattled off eight straight points, beginning with four from Smith.

When Haliburton drained a 3-pointer with 2:32 to play, the Pacers had built a 115-106 lead. That concluded a stretch of 11 points for Indiana in two minutes.

The Hornets held a 13-point lead in the second quarter, but that gap nearly vanished by halftime. Charlotte was up 63-60 at the break after Hield fired in five points in the last 17 seconds.

NFL News: Eagles put TE Dallas Goedert (shoulder) on IR

The Philadelphia Eagles placed starting tight end Dallas Goedert on injured reserve Wednesday with a shoulder injury.

He’ll have to miss at least four games. It is not believed to be a season-ending injury.

The move was one of several the Eagles made Wednesday.

Defensive tackle Marlon Tuipulotu was also placed on IR with an undisclosed injury. He played in nine games, including a start on Monday against the Washington Commanders. The second-year player has 16 tackles and a sack on the season.

The Eagles signed veteran journeyman Linval Joseph to a one-year contract in hopes of bolstering their run defense.

The Eagles also activated tight end Tyree Jackson from the physically unable to perform list, the final day to do so. He joins Jack Stoll and rookie Grant Calcaterra in the tight end room.

The team opened the 21-day practice window for defensive end Janarius Robinson, who has been on injured reserve since Oct. 15.

Goedert was injured during Monday night’s loss to Washington. Goedert apparently sustained the injury late in the fourth quarter when he was yanked down by the facemask and landed awkwardly, resulting in a fumble. No facemask penalty was called on the play.

Goedert had three catches for 23 yards and a touchdown in the previously unbeaten Eagles’ 32-21 setback against the visiting Commanders.

Goedert, 27, has 43 catches for 544 yards and three touchdowns in nine starts this season. He ranks second in the league in yards and fourth in catches among tight ends.

Goedert has 236 catches for 2,839 yards and 19 TDs in 66 career games (49 starts) in four-plus seasons, all with the Eagles.

Joseph, 34, has yet to play a game in 2022. He played the previous two seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers. The two-time Pro Bowler has 644 tackles and 25 sacks in 171 career games (162 starts) with three teams.

Also Wednesday, the Eagles signed safety Marquise Blair to the practice squad. He takes the spot of wideout Auden Tate, who was released Tuesday.

MLS News: Timbers sign D Claudio Bravo to extension

0

The Portland Timbers signed Argentinian defender Claudio Bravo to a contract extension on Wednesday that spans through 2026 with a club option in 2027.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Bravo, 25, has started all 49 regular-season games he’s played in for Portland, tallying four assists in two seasons. He led MLS in tackles won (77) while leading Portland in interceptions (47), touches (1,921) and duels won (184) during the 2022 the regular season.

“Claudio has become an essential player for the team during his time with the Timbers,” Timbers technical director Ned Grabavoy said. “We’re glad he will be in Portland for years to come and see him continuing to be an influential contributor on the field.”
