NHL News: Skidding Sharks aim for rare road win over Stars

Considering the success they have enjoyed in Dallas, and against the San Jose Sharks there in recent years, the Stars might be in good shape to rebound from their worst defeat of the young season.

The Stars will look for a fifth win in six home games Friday night when they face the Sharks, who will try to avoid a season-high sixth straight defeat — and eighth in a row at Dallas.

The Stars outscored their opponents 18-6 during a three-game winning streak they brought into their Tuesday visit to face the surging Winnipeg Jets. After Jason Robertson extended his career-high consecutive goal streak to six games by opening the night’s scoring in the second period, the Jets scored four times during the frame and handed Dallas a 5-1 loss.

“Not much silver lining to that one,” said Stars coach Peter DeBoer, a former Sharks coach. “It’s a pretty honest group. We’ll look at (what happened at Winnipeg) and respond the next game.”

The potential good news for the Stars is that they are 4-1-1 at home, with a 19-10 goal advantage. It’s also possible starting netminder Jake Oettinger (5-1-0, 1.40 goals-against average) could return to action for the first time since he sustained a lower-body injury vs. the New York Rangers on Oct. 29.

“The next step was reincorporating him into practice, which we did, and we’ll see how he feels.” DeBoer said Thursday.

Backup Scott Wedgewood stopped 86 of 92 shots during Dallas’ three-game winning streak with Oettinger out, but he yielded all four second-period goals at Winnipeg. He has surrendered 20 goals in five career games vs. San Jose.

Dallas owns a 27-10 scoring advantage during a seven-game home winning streak over the Sharks that dates to October 2015.

San Jose is in poor form at the moment, too, having allowed 21 goals during a 0-2-3 rut that includes a 5-3 road loss to the St. Louis Blues on Thursday.

The Sharks have lost 12 of their first 15 games, including three in shootouts, but nine of those defeats were decided by two goals or fewer.

“Just big-time mistakes that end up in our net, and it happens every single night,” Sharks veteran Logan Couture, who scored for the fifth time this season on Thursday, told The Mercury News. “We’ve got to find a way to avoid making the big mistakes.”

Though San Jose continues to struggle for wins, star defenseman Erik Karlsson had two more assists at St. Louis. Karlsson has recorded 15 points (seven goals, eight assists) — of his team-leading 21 — in the past six contests.

Karlson has notched two goals and nine assists during his past eight games vs. Dallas.

After the Sharks’ Kaapo Kahkonen made 28 saves against the Blues, James Reimer could start Friday in the back-to-back scenario. Reimer has a 3.68 goals-against average during an 0-2-2 rut that followed a 30-save performance during San Jose’s 3-0 victory at Philadelphia on Oct. 23.

Reimer stopped 48 of 50 shots while splitting his two starts versus Dallas last season.

Robertson recorded a goal and an assist in three games vs. San Jose last season. Meanwhile, Dallas’ Joe Pavelski only has one of each in four games against his former club since leaving San Jose following the 2018-19 campaign. Pavelski spent 13 seasons with the Sharks.

NHL News: Red-hot Kraken to face Kirill Kaprizov, Wild

Kirill Kaprizov had something to prove.

A night after being sent off in the second period with a match penalty for high-sticking Drew Doughty in a 1-0 loss at Los Angeles, the Minnesota Wild forward scored two power-play goals in a 4-1 victory Wednesday at Anaheim.

Kaprizov and the Wild will wrap up a three-games-in-four-days trip to the West Coast on Friday night in Seattle.

“He was motivated with everything that went on (Tuesday),” Wild coach Dean Evason said.

Kaprizov, who took a career-high nine shots on goal against the Ducks, has 10 goals in 13 games this season. It’s the second-fastest a Wild player has reached double-digits in franchise history, behind only Brian Rolston, who did it in 12 games in the 2006-07 season.

“He’s clearly one of the best players in the league,” Evason said of his 25-year-old forward, who tied for fifth in the NHL with 47 goals last season, his third. “He has the puck all the time.”

Matt Dumba and Joseph Cramarossa also scored, and Filip Gustavsson stopped 31 shots for his first win for the Wild.

Kaprizov’s power-play goal at 16:37 of the second period tied the score at 1-1 and ended the Wild’s goalless drought at 159 minutes, 45 seconds, a stretch that included a 4-0 loss to the Kraken last Thursday in Saint Paul, Minn.

“The whole group took a sigh,” Evason said. “When pucks aren’t going into the net and you are not feeling good, you need looks on the power play to get you going.

“We had a few more looks here (going 2 for 6 with the man advantage), it allowed us to feel good. Not only the guys on the ice but the guys on the bench feel that too.”

The Kraken have won five straight games, a franchise high. After defeating Pittsburgh at home, they swept a three-game trip to Calgary, Minnesota and Pittsburgh before opening a six-game homestand Tuesday with a 5-1 victory against Nashville, scoring four goals in the first period.

Jordan Eberle scored twice for Seattle, and Andre Burakovsky had a goal and two assists.

“I think the last couple games here during our five-game winning streak, we’ve been having good starts,” Burakovsky said. “I think that was a little bit of a problem earlier in the year where we came out a little bit sleeping, and we’ve been talking about it a lot. Now I think we were coming out hot. That sets the tone for sure.”

The Kraken have won two in a row at home to improve their record at Climate Pledge Arena to 3-3-1. They’re 5-1-1 on the road.

“Our road record’s been a lot better than at home and we have a bit of a stand here,” Eberle said. “So, to get the first one is obviously pretty big.”

But Eberle cautioned about getting too excited.

“I think the biggest thing for us right now is to not get too high here,” Eberle said. “I know we’ve won five in a row, but we have a big homestand, some really good teams that we’re about to play. A lot of times you get a little bit lackadaisical and think things are too easy, and that’s when this league gets you.”

Kraken goalie Martin Jones stopped 24 of 25 shots against Nashville to improve to 7-3-1 with a 2.45 goals-against average filling in for the injured Philipp Grubauer.

NHL News: Kevin Fiala beats OT horn as Kings edge Blackhawks

Kevin Fiala scored with 1.4 seconds left in overtime to lift the Los Angeles Kings to a 2-1 win against the visiting Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday night.

Phillip Danault scored in regulation and Jonathan Quick made 28 saves for the Kings, who earned their third victory in a row.

Taylor Raddysh scored and Petr Mrazek made 29 saves for Chicago, which beat the visiting Kings 2-1 in overtime on Nov. 3 for its only win in the past seven games.

Philipp Kurashev blocked Danault’s shot on a rush in overtime, but the puck came back to Danault, who passed it to Fiala for the one-timer into the open side of the net.

Raddysh scored on a power play to give Chicago a 1-0 lead with 1:09 left in the first period.

Rasmus Kupari was in the penalty box for hooking Kurashev when Max Domi slid a pass from the top of the right circle to Jonathan Toews on the goal line to the side of the net.

Toews briefly stickhandled the puck before passing it to Raddysh coming through the slot for the one-timer, his fourth goal of the season.

Los Angeles tied it 1-1 at 1:41 of the second period.

Trevor Moore backhanded a diagonal pass to Viktor Arvidsson at the bottom of the left circle. Arvidsson stopped the puck with his skate and then passed it to Danault at the top of the circle for a one-timer that beat Mrazek for his fifth goal of the season.

The Kings had two power plays early in the third period but did not capitalize on either, dropping them to 0-for-8 with the man advantage over the past two games.

Quick was coming off his first shutout of the season, stopping 21 shots in a 1-0 win against the visiting Minnesota Wild on Tuesday.

Mrazek, who had been sidelined due to a groin strain, made his first start since a 4-3 overtime win against the visiting Detroit Red Wings on Oct. 21.

Toews went 18-for-21 in the faceoff circle while Danault went 4-for-20.

NHL News: Mikko Rantanen, Logan O’Connor guide Avs past Predators

Mikko Rantanen had two goals and an assist, Logan O’Connor also scored twice and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Nashville Predators 5-3 on Thursday in Denver.

Evan Rodrigues added a goal, J.T. Compher and Nathan MacKinnon had two assists each and Alexandar Georgiev made 32 saves for Colorado, which has a three-game winning streak.

Eeli Tolvanen, Roman Josi and Ryan Johansen had goals and Kevin Lankinen turned away 30 shots for the Predators, who have lost two in a row.

Nashville had a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal to start the game and converted on one of them when Tolvanen beat Georgiev on a sharp-angle shot at 3:45 of the first period. It was his second of the season.

The Avalanche tied it on the power play on Rantanen’s one-timer off a feed from MacKinnon at 7:37 of the first period, and then took control in the second period with three goals in a 4:14 span.

O’Connor got his first of the game when he tipped a shot from the point by Devon Toews past Lankinen at 6:34. Just 1:25 later, Compher blocked a shot in the Colorado end, O’Connor picked it up, skated in alone on Lankinen and scored his second of the game and fifth of the season.

Rantanen went off for a crosscheck midway through the second and came out of the box as MacKinnon got the puck in the Avalanche zone. He hit Rantanen with a stretch pass, and Rantanen beat Lankinen on a breakaway at 10:48 for his ninth of the season.

Rodrigues made it 5-1 when his shot deflected off a Predators player and in at 15:12 of the second period. It was his fifth goal of the season.

Nashville got one back on the power play in the final minute of the second when Johansen redirected Mikael Granlund’s shot at 19:32, Johansen’s fifth goal of the season.

The Predators pulled within two early in the third period when Josi’s one-timer from the right boards beat Georgiev at 2:59. It was his third of the season.

Lankinen went off for an extra skater twice in the final three minutes, but Nashville couldn’t score.

NHL News: Devils beat Senators in OT to run win streak to 8

Nico Hischier scored a power-play goal with 33 seconds left in overtime as the New Jersey Devils extended their winning streak to eight games with a 4-3 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night in Newark, N.J.

The Devils are on their first eight-game winning streak since Feb. 6-22, 2011, and Hischier kept it going with his 11th career game-winning goal.

New Jersey got a late power play when Jack Hughes drew a holding penalty on Thomas Chabot racing for the puck near the neutral zone. After Hischier won a faceoff from Tyler Motte, he moved the puck to Hughes in the right circle.

Hughes then whipped the puck to Dougie Hamilton, whose slap shot from above the circle was deflected by Hischier past goalie Anton Forsberg and gave the Devils their fourth straight one-goal win.

Akira Schmid put the Devils in position for the win by making five of his seven saves in overtime to earn his first career win. He entered when Vitek Vanecek was lifted for precautionary reasons with 9:23 left in the third following a second-period collision with Chabot.

Schmid made three stops on Tim Stutzle during an Ottawa power play and also made a point-blank stop on Ottawa captain Brady Tkachuk.

Hischier also scored in the first period and the Devils improved to 10-0-0 when he records a point. Tomas Tatar and Miles Wood also scored for the Devils, who are 11-1-0 in their past 12 games.

Shane Pinto recorded his first career two-goal game by getting a pair of tying goals, though Ottawa dropped its seventh straight. Travis Hamonic also scored for the Senators, who have lost each game in their skid by two goals or fewer.

Forsberg made 37 saves but wound up slamming his stick on the net after Hischier’s third game-winning goal of the season.

Tatar opened the scoring 4:44 in when his wrister from the middle of the slot caromed off Ottawa’s Parker Kelly and past Forsberg. Pinto scored his first goal on a redirection with 9:45 left in the first and Hamonic gave Ottawa a 2-1 lead 69 seconds later.

Hischier finished off a 2-on-1 with 1:54 left in the first and Wood chipped a loose puck into the net early in the second before Pinto scored the tying goal 1:29 into the third.

NCAAF News: Recruit Jaden Rashada flips from Miami to Florida

Four-star quarterback prospect Jaden Rashada called an audible over social media on Friday morning by agreeing to join Florida, four-plus months after committing to Miami.

Rashada is listed by 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 7-rated quarterback in the 2023 class. He initially selected the Hurricanes over the Gators as well as LSU, Mississippi and Texas A&M in June.

“After a lot of prayer, conversations with my family and those close to me, I have decided to change my commitment and play for the University of Florida,” Rashada wrote early Friday morning on Twitter.

“I have tremendous respect for Miami and what they are going to accomplish there, but I have watched this season and Coach (Billy) Napier and his team are building something very special in The Swamp and I want to be a part of it.”

Per Sports Illustrated, Rashada has thrown for 4,883 yards and 63 touchdowns and added 420 yards and five scores during his four-year high school career at Pittsburg (Calif.) High School.

The addition of Rashada gives Florida the No. 8 overall recruiting class for 2023, per the 247Sports rankings.

NFL News: Bills taking it by the hour with QB Josh Allen

Whether Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen plays this weekend against the Minnesota Vikings likely will be decided at the last minute.

Coach Sean McDermott said Friday that Allen is “hour-to-hour” with a right elbow injury. He has yet to participate in practice this week, including Friday, after sustaining the injury during the final drive of the Bills’ 20-17 loss to the New York Jets on Sunday.

“We are in an hour-to-hour situation here to see how he progresses through the day,” McDermott said on WGR 550.

Former Vikings quarterback Case Keenum would draw the start should Allen be unable to play for the Bills (6-2).

While Allen’s availability is in question, McDermott ruled out safety Jordan Poyer and defensive end Greg Rousseau for the contest versus the Vikings (7-1). Poyer will miss his second consecutive game with an elbow injury, while Rousseau is considered week-to-week with a high ankle sprain.

The Bills’ injury report will be updated Friday afternoon.

NFL News: Unbeaten Eagles eye long-term goals, seek sweep of Commanders

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts’ franchise-record streak of 11 straight regular-season wins includes three games against Washington.

Hurts will look to build on those numbers when the Eagles (8-0) host the Commanders (4-5) on Monday night.

During last season’s successful playoff push, Hurts and Philadelphia defeated Washington in Weeks 15 and 17. The Eagles beat the Commanders 24-8 on the road in Week 3 this season, with Hurts passing for 340 yards and three touchdowns and the defense sacking Carson Wentz nine times.

Wentz (2017), Donovan McNabb (2003) and Norm Van Brocklin (1960) shared the previous Philadelphia record with nine consecutive regular-season victories.

As the Eagles look to continue the best start in franchise history, Hurts keeps his eye on the big picture.

“I know it’s special for the city of Philadelphia, but I’ve been 8-0 before and lost in the national championship (at Alabama). So just take it day by day,” Hurts said. “We haven’t accomplished anything yet, and it’s a day-by-day thing of us controlling the things we can, playing to our standard and trying to grow every day. I think that’s truly what it’s about.”

Setting aside the “day by day” cliche, Hurts is enjoying a terrific season with career highs in completion rate (68.2 percent) and passer rating (107.8) and just three turnovers (two interceptions, one fumble) on 557 snaps.

“The way he has been playing, the way he goes about his process and his business, it’s tremendous,” offensive coordinator Shane Steichen said. “The guys feed off it. You see it on the practice field, you see it in the meeting rooms, and to carry it over every Sunday and being consistent — that’s what you want in a quarterback, and he’s doing that now.”

The well-rested Eagles are playing their fourth game in prime time, having already taken down the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night in Week 2, the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night in Week 6 and the Houston Texans in their most recent contest on Thursday night in Week 9.

The Commanders, now with Taylor Heinicke under center, had a three-game winning streak snapped with a 20-17 home loss to the Minnesota Vikings last Sunday. Washington, which led 17-7 early in the fourth quarter, has held the lead at some point in each of its past six games but is 3-3 in that span.

“It can be feast or famine at times with him,” Commanders coach Ron Rivera said of Heinicke, who is 9-9 as a starter for Washington. “But he’s done the things needed to do to give ourselves an opportunity.”

After leading a fourth-quarter comeback to beat the Indianapolis Colts in Week 8, Heinicke threw a fourth-quarter interception in the Week 9 collapse against Minnesota.

“A roller coaster ride, man,” Rivera said. “You watch him do the things that he does, when he’s running the operation out there, he’s very confident and makes a lot of good decisions where to throw the ball. A couple times it comes out hot and high, but (he’s played) well enough to give us a chance to win in two of the last three games.”

Linebacker Cole Holcomb (foot) and running back J.D. McKissic (neck) did not practice Thursday for Washington. Wide receiver Jahan Dotson (hamstring), center Tyler Larsen (back) and linebacker David Mayo (hamstring) practiced in a limited capacity.

The only players on Philadelphia’s injury report Thursday were cornerbacks Josh Jobe and Avonte Maddox, who both missed practice with hamstring injuries, and fellow cornerback Josiah Scott (ankle), who was limited.

NBA2K News: NBL Oz Gaming select Jyden, DjayTooCold in expansion draft

0

Guard Jyden “Jyden” McBath-Spencer and power forward Frederick “DjayTooCold” Payton were selected by Australian club NBL Oz Gaming in the NBA 2K Expansion Draft.

Jyden, who previously played for NetsGC last season, will join Australian Harry “RealHvzn” Spierings in the backcourt.

DjayTooCold made the All-Rookie Team last season while playing for T-Wolves Gaming.

“Jyden and DjayTooCold were two players we had highlighted from very early in the process and we are delighted to have drafted them,” NBL Oz Gaming coach Mitchell “Mootyy” Franklin said. “They’re highly talented and fit the culture we are trying to establish at NBL Oz Gaming.

“Our guard duo of Jyden and RealHvzn will work together beautifully while DjayTooCold will bring a level of energy we need to make a statement in our inaugural season.

“The focus now turns to getting our three contracted players together to start building chemistry and implementing a gameplan, while also eyeing next year’s NBA 2K League Draft where we will round out the roster.”

NBL Oz Gaming roster will have two picks at the NBA 2K League Draft early next year.
