Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: ‘LeBron makes me love the game again’

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar embraced LeBron James at center court in Los Angeles on Tuesday night after the latter broke his record as the leading scorer in NBA history.

James eclipsed Abdul-Jabbar’s mark of 38,387 career regular-season points on a fadeaway shot with 10.9 seconds remaining in the third quarter of the Lakers’ 133-130 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Within hours, Abdul-Jabbar penned an essay, published on his Substack page, that detailed his appreciation for “The King.”

Abdul-Jabbar opened the post by praising James’ “unbelievable drive, dedication and talent” and also lauded his desire for winning while being a good teammate.

The Basketball Hall of Fame member then addressed his feelings as James pulled closer to the record.

“In the months leading up to LeBron breaking my record, so much was written about how I would feel on the day he sank that record-breaking shot that I had to laugh,” Abdul-Jabbar wrote. “I’d already written several times stating exactly how I felt, so there really wasn’t much to speculate about.

“It’s as if I won a billion dollars in a lottery, and 39 years later, someone won two billion dollars. How would I feel? Grateful that I won and happy that the next person also won. His winning in no way affects my winning.”

Abdul-Jabbar then focused on former teammate Earvin “Magic” Johnson, who said he felt that the former would have a difficult time watching his record go by the boards. Abdul-Jabbar admitted that may have been the case shortly after his retirement, but not anymore.

“But that ain’t me today. I’m 75. The only time I ever think of the record is when someone brings it up. I retired from the NBA 34 years ago. For the past 20 years, I’ve occupied myself with social activism, my writing career, and my family — especially my three grandchildren.

“… Sorry, Earvin. I love you, brother, but this time you got it wrong.”

Abdul-Jabbar also addressed his relationship with the 38-year-old James … or lack thereof.

“LeBron said we don’t have a relationship. He’s right — and for that I blame myself. Not for anything I did, but perhaps for not making more of an effort to reach out to him,” Abdul-Jabbar wrote.

“By nature I have never been a chummy, reaching-out kind of guy (as the media was always quick to point out). I’m quiet, shy, and am such a devoted homebody that you’d think I have agoraphobia. I like to read, watch TV, listen to jazz. That’s pretty much it. For the past 15 years my focus has been less on forming new relationships than on nurturing my old friendships with people like Magic, Michael Cooper, Jerry West, and so on.”

Abdul-Jabbar closed his post by praising James, both as a basketball player and person.

“Bottom line about LeBron and me: LeBron makes me love the game again. And he makes me proud to be part of an ever-widening group of athletes who actively care about their community.”

NFL News: Report: Brock Purdy set for surgery on torn UCL

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has elected to have surgery later this month to repair his torn UCL, a procedure that allows him to be ready for training camp, NFL Network reported Wednesday.

Purdy will have the surgery Feb. 22 in Dallas, one day after meeting with Texas Rangers head team physician and orthopedic surgeon Dr. Keith Meister, per the report.

Purdy is expected to make a full recovery. Purdy was weighing this option vs. undergoing reconstructive surgery — or Tommy John surgery — on the UCL in his throwing arm.

Purdy, 23, suffered a complete UCL tear in his throwing elbow during the NFC Championship Game loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. He was injured on the 49ers’ sixth play from scrimmage on a blow from Eagles linebacker Haason Reddick.

Purdy later had to re-enter the game after backup Josh Johnson sustained a concussion. Purdy only attempted two short passes after returning.

He later told reporters his arm felt “shocks all over from my elbow down to my wrist” and “just pain” when he threw, limiting him to nothing more than 5-yard tosses.

Purdy threw for 1,374 yards, 13 touchdowns and four interceptions in the regular season and went for 332 yards and three TDs in a wild-card win over the Seattle Seahawks. He added 214 yards passing when the Niners edged the Dallas Cowboys in the divisional round.

The 2023 quarterback room will belong to Purdy and Trey Lance, with 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan announcing last week there was no “scenario” for the return of free agent Jimmy Garoppolo next season.

MLS News: Atlanta United sign striker Giorgos Giakoumakis

0

Atlanta United FC acquired striker Giorgos Giakoumakis from Scotland’s Celtic FC on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old Greek international will occupy a designated player slot and is signed through the 2026 season.

Recent reports linked Giakoumakis to Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds, but Atlanta’s undisclosed offer won out.

“Giorgos is a player who’s been on the club’s radar for a while and we’re excited to bring him to Atlanta,” Carlos Bocanegra, Atlanta’s vice president and technical director, said in a release.

“He’s a powerful striker who loves to get in the box and score goals. He plays with a high intensity, works hard and is someone we think will help the team both in the attack and leading the line defensively. We’re excited to welcome him to the club and integrate him into the squad.”

Giakoumakis scored 55 goals in 90 games over the past two seasons while winning league scoring titles with VVV-Venlo in the Dutch Eredivisie in 2020-21 and with Celtic in the Scottish Premiership in 2021-22.

MLB News: Cardinals acquire LHP Anthony Misiewicz from Royals

The St. Louis Cardinals acquired left-handed reliever Anthony Misiewicz from the Kansas City Royals for cash considerations on Wednesday.

Misiewicz, 28, pitched for the Royals and Seattle Mariners in 2022 and was a combined 1-2 with a 4.34 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 29 innings spread over 32 relief appearances.

He pitched in 119 games with Seattle (2020-22) and Kansas City (2022) and tallied a 6-9 record, 4.43 ERA and 105 strikeouts 103 2/3 innings.

His 119 appearances rank seventh in the American League over the past three seasons, and he is fifth in holds with 32.

To make room on the roster for Misiewicz, the Cardinals designated right-handed pitcher James Naile for assignment.

Naile, 30, made his major league debut in 2022 and had an ERA of 5.00 in seven appearances (nine innings).

UFC News: Volkanovski-Makhachev title bout headlines UFC 284

It’s champion vs. champion in the main event of UFC 284.

Saturday night’s event is headlined by the two undisputed best in their weight classes, both of whom have meritorious claims at pound-for-pound No. 1.

The card in Perth, Australia, will be headlined by one of Australia’s own in featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski, who goes up in weight class to challenge lightweight titleholder Islam Makhachev of Dagestan.

It promises to be world-class fight, even in an era in which holding UFC gold doesn’t necessarily mean you are the world’s best in your weight class. To wit, heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou recently opted to become a free agent rather than accept the promotion’s contract offer.

Volkanovski (25-1), based out of New South Wales, has a perfect record since entering UFC in 2016, with wins in all 12 of his Octagon matchups. He’s used a style based on high-volume striking combined with seemingly limitless cardio, a strategy that brought him to the 145-pound championship, which he’s successfully defended four times.

Makhachev (23-1), meanwhile, stumbled in his second UFC bout back in 2015. But he’s been red hot since.

With a style that echoes his trainer, the legendary Khabib Nurmagomedov, Makhachev uses aggressive grappling to set up ruthless ground strikes as he works toward the finish. He’s won 11 straight bouts.

Last time out, he submitted the UFC record holder for submission wins, Charles Oliveira, to claim the 155-pound title.

The evening’s co-feature bout is an interim featherweight title bout, featuring Mexico’s Yair Rodriguez (15-3, 1NC) vs. Josh Emmett (18-2) of Sacramento, Calif.

Both fighters love to get down and dirty, so anything but a wild scrap would be surprising.

Should Volkanovski win the lightweight title, the winner of the co-main would become the full-time featherweight champ. Should Volkanovski lose to Makhachev, the winner of Rodriguez vs. Emmett would get the next shot at Volkanovski at 145 pounds.

The bout marks the eighth fight between champions from different weight classes in UFC history. The most recent saw women’s featherweight champion Amanda Nunes defeat Julianna Pena for the bantamweight belt at UFC 277.

MLB News: Mariners’ Dylan Moore agrees to 3-year contract extension

Seattle Mariners utilityman Dylan Moore agreed to a three-year contract extension that runs through 2025, the team announced Wednesday.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, however MLB.com reported that it is worth $8.875 million with escalators that could elevate the value to $9 million.

Moore, 30, has been a Swiss army knife for the Mariners, playing every position except catcher in his four-year career. He’s mostly been used in left field (110 appearances) and second base (106). He even pitched one inning in 2019.

“Dylan has been a big contributor to our team over the past four seasons,” said Justin Hollander, Mariners executive vice president and general manager of baseball operations.

“His defensive versatility, athleticism, proficiency both on the bases and with the bat versus left-handed pitching, are key elements to how our roster works. As such, we are thrilled that we were able to work out a deal that recognizes the importance of the role he plays.”

Moore hit .224 with six home runs, 24 RBIs and 21 stolen bases in 2022. He’s a career .208 hitter with 35 home runs, 140 runs and 65 stolen bases.

NHL News: Three-goal second period propels Stars past Wild

Roope Hintz scored once and added an assist as the host Dallas Stars used a three-goal second period en route to a 4-1 victory over the struggling Minnesota Wild on Wednesday.

Jamie Benn, Radek Faksa and Jani Hakanpaa also scored for the Central Division-leading Stars, who have won two straight games and have a 4-0-3 mark in their last seven outings. Goaltender Jake Oettinger made 39 saves, 16 of them in the third period, and Jason Robertson collected two assists.

Joel Eriksson Ek replied for the Wild, who have lost five of seven games, all in regulation, a swoon that has dropped them to the Western Conference’s second wild-card spot. Goalie Filip Gustavsson stopped 33 shots.

Benn’s 20th goal of the season opened the scoring 23 seconds into the second period. With Benn zipping past the defenders, Wyatt Johnson threaded a pass that found the Stars captain at full stride, and Benn converted a forehand deke.

Faksa doubled the lead at the 5:40 mark of the middle frame. Tyler Seguin led a two-on-one rush that ended when he sent a cross-ice pass for Faksa to redirect for his seventh of the season.

Hakanpaa made it a 3-0 edge just past the tilt’s midway point. Another odd-man rush for the Stars resulted in Hakanpaa heading to the net and deflecting Hintz’s shot for his fifth goal of the season.

Eriksson Ek’s power-play goal gave the Wild a jolt of life with 1:44 remaining in the second period. A three-way passing play ended with a Kirill Kaprizov feed that left Eriksson Ek with a tap-in from the doorstep for his 19th goal of the season.

Kaprizov’s assist extended his point-scoring streak to seven games, in which he’s collected three goals and nine points.

Faksa failed to convert a third-period penalty shot, but Hintz iced the game with an empty-net goal, his 22nd marker of the campaign.

NHL News: Rangers edge Canucks for third straight win

Chris Kreider scored his 250th career goal, Filip Chytil tied a career high by scoring in his fifth straight game and the host New York Rangers held on for a 4-3 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday night.

New York improved to 4-0-1 in its past five games and 18-4-3 since its 5-2 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Dec. 3.

Kreider and Chytil scored in a span of 1:38 during the first period while Alexis Lafreniere tallied in the second and Mika Zibanejad scored his 25th goal late in the third.

Kreider became the seventh player in team history to reach 250 goals. Chytil matched his longest goal-scoring streak set Nov. 12-21, 2018, and scored his 11th goal in his past 13 contests.

New York’s Igor Shesterkin made 22 saves in his first start in two weeks.

Conor Garland, Vasily Podkolzin and Elias Pettersson scored as Vancouver dropped to 2-2-1 under new coach Rick Tocchet and dropped to 4-12-1 in its past 17.

Vancouver’s Spencer Martin stopped 17 shots and lost for the ninth straight time.

Kreider opened the scoring with 13:07 remaining when he finished off a 2-on-1 with Vincent Trocheck by converting an easy tap-in at the left side of the net.

The Rangers doubled the lead with 11:29 remaining when Chytil flipped a backhander over Martin’s left shoulder from in front of the net moments after Vancouver defenseman Riley Stillman committed a giveaway behind the net.

The Canucks made it a one-goal game with 2:24 remaining in the first when Garland’s off-balance shot from the left circle sailed over Shesterkin’s right shoulder.

New York took a 3-1 lead with 13:37 left in the second when Lafreniere reached his stick out for the deflection of Jacob Trouba’s shot from the left point into the vacated right side of the net.

Vancouver got within one goal again with 3:54 remaining when Podkolzin came off the bench and stepped into a wrister from the left circle that caromed off the stick of the Rangers’ Artemi Panarin’s and past Shesterkin’s right shoulder.

After Zibanejad deflected a Trouba shot with 3:55 remaining, Pettersson pushed a loose puck into the net 11 seconds later when icing went uncalled.

NHL News: Kraken shake off rough loss, visit surging Devils

Neither New Jersey coach Lindy Ruff nor Seattle coach Dave Hakstol were happy with their teams’ first game back after the All-Star break.

The difference was, the Devils defeated visiting Vancouver 5-4 in overtime Monday while the Kraken suffered a 4-0 loss to the host New York Islanders on Tuesday.

The Devils and Kraken will meet for the second and final time this season on Thursday night in Newark, N.J. Seattle won 4-3 at home on Jan. 19 as Andre Burakovsky scored 1:10 into overtime.

The Devils are 9-1-1 in their past 11 games, but Monday’s victory didn’t come easy.

They squandered a three-goal lead before Jesper Bratt scored with the man advantage with 43 seconds remaining in overtime.

Jack Hughes and Ondrej Palat each scored twice and goaltender Vitek Vanecek made 26 saves in winning his 10th straight game.

“I just think we got lucky,” Ruff said. “I think the last 10 minutes of the third period that it was all Vancouver. I’m not going to sugarcoat anything. They had two or three opportunities, they could have won the game. I feel like we got lucky.”

The Devils have worked overtime in six of their past seven games, winning five.

“We know we’re a really good hockey team now,” said Hughes, who also assisted on the winning goal. “We got a good squad so I mean, I don’t know if it’s adversity or anything like that. We just got to play the full 60 minutes and we’ve been doing it, but (Monday) was a little bit of an off night but we came out with the win.”

The Devils scored three times in a 50-second span midway through the second period to take a 4-1 lead before letting the Canucks back in the game.

“This wasn’t our A-game,” Bratt said. “Coming off the (All-Star) break, you could be a little rusty. At the same time, we showed great character coming back and found a way to get a win. Those two points, in the end, are going to be huge for us. For us to battle it out and find a way to win was huge.”

The Kraken fell out of a first-place tie in the Pacific Division with Tuesday’s loss in the opener of a five-game trip in Elmont, N.Y.

Martin Jones made 24 saves for the Kraken, who played for the first time since Jan. 28.

“Obviously you don’t want to use it as an excuse,” Seattle forward Jaden Schwartz said of the All-Star break. “A lot of teams are in (a) similar situation. … We know what our game looks like when we’re sharp.”

Burakovsky, the Kraken’s leading scorer, left the game after sustaining a lower-body injury on his first shift and didn’t return.

“It’s not ideal to lose a guy on his very first shift 20 seconds into the hockey game, but those things happen,” Hakstol said. “We’ve been able to adapt and overcome.

” … That’s not the reason for (Tuesday’s loss). It’s not ideal for sure to go down to 11 forwards and 59 minutes to go in the game, but that’s not the reason that we couldn’t get ourselves going.”

Defenseman Jaycob Megna made his Kraken debut after being acquired in a trade with San Jose on Sunday. Megna was a minus-2 in 18:15 of ice time, with his turnover leading to one of the Islanders’ goals.
