Celtics’ Al Horford, Robert Williams III out vs. 76ers

Boston Celtics centers Al Horford and Robert Williams III will miss Wednesday night’s game against the visiting Philadelphia 76ers.

Horford is dealing with swelling in his right knee, while Williams is nursing a left ankle sprain. Grant Williams, Blake Griffin and Luke Kornet are expected to see increased roles in the frontcourt with Horford and Robert Williams out.

Horford, 36, is averaging 9.1 points and 6.1 rebounds while shooting 46.2 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from 3-point range in 43 starts this season.

Robert Williams, 25, has averages of 8.6 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.3 blocks while shooting 77.2 percent from the floor in 20 games (11 starts) this season.

The Celtics will also be without reigning Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart, who will miss his eighth straight game with a right ankle sprain.

Cavs’ Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland out vs. Pistons

Cleveland Cavaliers guards Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland will miss Wednesday night’s game against the visiting Detroit Pistons.

Mitchell will be sidelined with groin soreness and Garland will be out due to thumb soreness. Mitchell was held out of five of Cleveland’s six games from Jan. 18-27 due to the same injury, while Garland hasn’t missed a game since Jan. 4.

Raul Neto and Caris LeVert will draw the start on Wednesday in the duo’s absence.

Mitchell, 26, is averaging 26.8 points, 3.9 rebounds and 4.9 assists while shooting 47.3 percent from the field in 46 starts this season, his first with Cleveland. He was also named an All-Star for the fourth time in his career and will be starting for Team Giannis on Feb. 19 in Salt Lake City.

Garland, 23, averages 22.0 points and 8.1 assists. He is shooting 46.1 percent from the field and 41.5 percent from 3-point range across 47 starts.

NFL News: Eagles’ Jalen Hurts focuses on consistency ahead of Super Bowl

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

That’s the attitude Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is taking as he approaches his Super Bowl LVII clash with the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday in Glendale, Ariz.

Despite being just days away from the biggest game of his career, Hurts is focused on maintaining the same routine that helped him post a 14-1 record as a starter in the 2022 regular season and then earn a playoff wins over the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers.

“I’ve been doing the same things that I’ve done all year,” Hurts said Wednesday regarding his work ahead of the Super Bowl. “My preparation hasn’t changed, this team’s preparation hasn’t changed. We’ve kind of gone into it with a day-to-day mentality. Taking it day by day. Trying to master the day, win the day and doing it that way.”

Much of that preparation came well before the regular season started.

“I think the important thing is to always fall back on your work,” Hurts said. “I was telling A.J. (Brown) today, I said it’s no different than us being at FAU getting our work in there in the offseason. … We prepared really well all offseason, had really good time with each other, got on the same page with the coaches in terms of how we wanted this offense to look.

“I don’t think anything is going to change in terms of our planning going into the game.”

A lot of the game-planning has centered around Philadelphia’s receiving core, a dangerous unit led by DeVonta Smith (95 receptions, 1,196 yards, seven touchdowns), Brown (88 receptions, 1,496 yards, 11 TDs) and tight end Dallas Goedert (55 receptions, 702 yards, three TDs).

Hurts has come to rely upon that group, specifically Smith and Brown, and will be leaning on them heavily when the Eagles take on Kansas City.

“Birds of a feather flock together. And I think those are guys that I call true friends, and not only because the men that they are, but the friends that they are, the competitors they are, what drives them, what motivates them to be great,” Hurts said. “We come in every day eager to take another step.

“No one is independent in this thing. We’re all dependent off of one another. So we challenge each other, we encourage each other and we push each other.”

Regardless of the result on Sunday, Hurts is honored that he has the chance to represent those who got him to where he is today as well as those who are currently looking up to him.

“It’s a ton of pride in everything that’s going on right now,” Hurts said. “When you’re (thrust) into these situations, you’re (given) these opportunities at hand, you don’t really realize the impact you’re doing until you reflect on it.

“To have these opportunities and be able to represent so many different people … people back home in Texas, quarterbacks that maybe they said they couldn’t do something or whatever it is, just believers — it’s something I definitely have on my heart when I’m out there playing.

“I heard someone say it — I don’t know if it was Michael Jordan or Kobe (Bryant) — but sometimes you get families and kids that save up all their money just to go to that one game. Just to go to that one game. They might not ever get to see you play in person again. So, you definitely want to put on a show for them when they’re coming.”

Harvesting Human Clones Could Give People ‘Spare Parts’, Make Them Live Much Longer, Researcher Says

Transhumanists think that technological advancements will enable them to live indefinitely in the human world, if not forever. They believe that one method they can use to achieve this is to clone themselves, which they will then use to scavenge the bodies for transplantable parts.

While immortality is still only a distant possibility, one anti-aging researcher thinks people could extend human lives beyond the present biological limits, without any sort of magic injection or pill, a Daily Mail Exclusive reported.

The news outlet revealed that according to Dr. Alex Zhavoronkov, CEO of the biotech firm Insilico Medicine, human clones may hold the key to a supposedly eternal life. Theoretically, the science fiction idea of creating bodies in laboratories would give people “spare” vital organs when their own start to fail in order to prolong their lives.

Dr. Zhavoronkov predicts that the method will be made available to humans during the lifetime of today’s children. His Hong Kong-based company creates medications to treat age-related illnesses. To transplant such body parts, their clone would be harvested.

While human clones are a highly contentious concept, Dr. Zhavoronkov believes they will one day be as commonplace as cars and iPhones. A genetically identical human being to someone who already exists or has in the past raises ethical questions.

According to the US National Human Genome Research Institute, this could be in conflict with enduring religious and societal values about human dignity and violate the tenets of individual identity, freedom, and autonomy. Others worry that proponents of eugenics might take advantage of the system.

However, according to Dr. Zhavoronkov, the most likely way to increase life expectancy is to create “many” clones of people. He stated that if someone can find a way to circumvent ethical and legal issues, the technology will initially only be accessible. As transplantology has advanced to the extent that one can transplant virtually anything, a person can have a perfect body, or purchase one, and focus only on the longevity of his brain. The researcher said those in their twenties today “have a real chance of living many times longer…”.

Researchers at The Roslin Institute, a division of the University of Edinburgh, created Dolly the sheep using cells taken from the udder of a six-year-old sheep in a reproductive cloning attempt as the first successful animal clone. However, despite unfounded claims from some researchers that they have succeeded, human cloning has remained a challenge.

Clippers’ Tyronn Lue joins USA Basketball coaching staff

Los Angeles Clippers coach Tyronn Lue is replacing the Phoenix Suns’ Monty Williams on the USA Basketball coaching staff.

Williams cited family commitments for his decision to step down, managing director Grant Hill said Wednesday.

Lue will be on the staff through 2024. On the horizon for USA Basketball is qualifying for the World Cup and the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

“I am truly honored to represent our country and join this great group of coaches,” Lue said in the news release. “Coaching USA Basketball has always been a dream of mine, and I’m humbled to take on the challenge.”

Lue, who won the 2016 NBA Finals with the Cleveland Cavaliers, joins Erik Spoelstra of the Miami Heat and college coach Mark Few of Gonzaga as assistants under head coach Steve Kerr of the Golden State Warriors.

“I’m excited to add Ty to what is already an outstanding staff,” Kerr said. “He is a brilliant coach who I’ve admired for years. Ty’s experience and expertise will add an important dynamic to the group as we face the challenges ahead. We are lucky to have him.”

Williams was part of the staff when the U.S. won the gold medal at the 2016 Olympics. He was selected in December 2021 to a three-year stint as an assistant.

“After further consideration, I have decided to withdraw as an assistant coach for the 2022-24 USA Men’s National Team,” Williams said in the news release. “This has been a difficult choice but given the timing and the demands of the commitment, it is the best choice for myself and my family.”

NFL News: Super Bowl injury report: Patrick Mahomes practices fully

The Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles are relatively healthy in the leadup to the Super Bowl.

In post-practice injury reports released by the NFL on Wednesday, only one player, Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney, did limited work due strictly to injury issues. Toney is dealing with ankle and hamstring ailments.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who has been slowed by an ankle injury, took part fully in practice.

Kansas City had five other players listed on the injury report, but all were full practice participants: Linebacker Willie Gay (shoulder), running back Jerick McKinnon (ankles), running back Isiah Pacheco (wrist), guard Trey Smith (ankle) and wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster (knee).

Three Eagles players — right tackle Lane Johnson (groin), center Cam Jurgens (hip) and cornerback Avonte Maddox (toe) — were listed as limited practice participants due partly to the team’s desire to rest them.

Philadelphia defensive end Robert Quinn (foot) and guard Landon Dickerson (elbow) both were full practice participants.

The Eagles and Chiefs will face off in Super Bowl LVII on Sunday in Glendale, Ariz.

With streaking Bucks in town, Lakers re-shift focus

With LeBron James’ pursuit of the NBA’s all-time scoring record now complete, the Los Angeles Lakers can work on getting themselves back into the playoff chase.

James broke Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s mark Wednesday against Oklahoma City, with another home game set for Thursday against the surging Milwaukee Bucks.

For all the pomp and circumstance Tuesday’s game provided for the Lakers, including a full complement of celebrities in the crowd, they ended up falling 133-130 to the Thunder. Los Angeles looked more interested in getting James over the scoring hump than playing defense.

“It sucks that we didn’t get the win on a night like this but there are a lot of things to pull from it,” Lakers coach Darvin Ham said. “I’m happy that Bron was able to accomplish what he accomplished and now we can just move on and submerge ourselves into how we try to get better and win enough games to be situated into the postseason.”

James needed 36 points to set the record and ended up with 38. But fellow star Anthony Davis had just 13 points on nine shot attempts in 31 minutes. The Lakers are just 3-4 since Davis returned from a foot injury and are in 13th place in the 15-team Western Conference.

At issue now is James’ sore right foot, which flared up on him late in Tuesday’s game. It is merely the latest injury wrinkle for the Lakers. Afterward, though, James was just trying to wrap his mind around becoming the greatest scorer of all time.

“I don’t think it has hit,” James said. “I had a moment obviously when it happened, and embracing that moment and seeing my family and my friends and people that’s been around me since I started this journey, even before the NBA. So definitely a great moment right there, very emotional just being a kid from a small town in Ohio. … But I don’t think it’s really hit me on what just transpired.”

The Bucks enter Wednesday’s game with a big-time scorer of their own. Giannis Antetokounmpo is averaging a career-best 32.2 points per game, which is third best in the NBA.

The Bucks are more at peace with the standings than the Lakers, sitting in second place in the Eastern Conference, one game behind the NBA-best Boston Celtics entering Tuesday’s slate. Milwaukee is on an eight-game winning streak, while also winning 10 of its last 11.

The Bucks enter well rested after a 127-108 road victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday as Antetokounmpo had 24 points in 23 minutes. Antetokounmpo was two assists short of a triple-double as he played through right knee soreness. Brook Lopez passed the 15,000-point mark for his career.

The entire win streak has taken place as the trio of Antetokounmpo, Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday have been reunited on the court together. Bobby Portis remains out with a right knee sprain.

“The group is playing well,” Bucks head coach Mike Budenholzer said. “I think having Khris back, getting 20-plus minutes from him has been helpful. We miss Bobby (Portis) right now but we’re a team that is just focused on getting better, focused on each day.”

The Bucks will be looking to avenge a 133-129 home defeat to the Lakers on Dec. 2.

NFL News: Eagles’ D faces ultimate test in Super Bowl: Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes

Patrick Mahomes is on the verge of becoming the youngest quarterback to start three Super Bowls, but the Kansas City Chiefs star is more interested in becoming the 13th to earn multiple Super Bowl rings.

Mahomes will be playing in his third Super Bowl in the past four campaigns, and his task on Sunday is to solve the dominant defense of the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII at Glendale, Ariz.

Mahomes will be 27 years, 148 days old when he takes the field but is already viewed as an NFL great. He is 1-1 in previous Super Bowls, having beaten the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 in Super Bowl LIV and losing 31-9 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV one year later.

The right ankle injury Mahomes sustained against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Jan. 21 is healing, but he won’t be 100 percent against the Eagles.

“You won’t know exactly how it is until you get to game day,” Mahomes said on Wednesday. “I mean, I definitely move around better than I was moving last week or two weeks ago. So it’s just trying to continue to get the treatment and the rehab and get it as close to 100 percent and then rely on some adrenaline to let me do a little bit extra when I’m on the field.”

Philadelphia’s defense, ranked second in the regular season at 301.5 yards allowed per game, will be swimming like sharks around Mahomes.

The Eagles have racked up 78 sacks during the regular season and postseason. That is third most all-time behind the mid-1980s Chicago Bears, who had a record 82 in 1984 and 80 in 1985.

Linebacker Haason Reddick has been particularly ferocious with a career-high 16 regular-season sacks and another 3.5 in two playoff games.

Three other Eagles posted a career-best 11 sacks apiece in the regular season: defensive ends Brandon Graham and Josh Sweat and defensive tackle Javon Hargrave.

“Just so many great players, man,” Reddick said. “From the edges to the interior, even when our guys … come in when our starters come out, there’s no drop-off in production when our second group is in there.”

Philadelphia will look to corral Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, who ranks second all-time in postseason receptions (127) and receiving yardage (1,467) and is tied for second with Rob Gronkowski with 15 postseason touchdown grabs. Jerry Rice leads in all three categories.

Kelce is part of a juicy storyline as he and older brother Jason (the Eagles’ center) will become the first set of brothers to play against one another in Super Bowl history. Both Kelces already own a Super Bowl ring, but Travis is 3-0 in matchups against Jason.

“Whoever wins this one will have the ultimate bragging rights,” Jason Kelce said.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid is looking for his second Super Bowl ring as he faces the organization that fired him in 2012 after 14 seasons. Reid ranks second all-time in postseason victories (21) behind Bill Belichick (31).

The 64-year-old has tried to swat away “Andy Reid Bowl” questions all week. He reached five NFC title games with the Eagles but just one Super Bowl, a 24-21 loss to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX.

Also a hot topic is whether the Chiefs can stamp themselves as a dynasty with a second Super Bowl win in four seasons. Reid, not surprisingly, has no interest in the subject.

“I’m not really into all that,” Reid said. “It’s important in our world as coaches and players that you try to get better every day. You’re only as good as your last game, or your next game, I should say. We’re striving to focus on this thing and try not to worry about all that stuff.”

The quarterback matchup between Mahomes and Philadelphia’s Jalen Hurts is noteworthy, marking the first Super Bowl in which each team has a Black starting quarterback.

Only three Black quarterbacks have won a Super Bowl: Doug Williams (Super Bowl XXII), Russell Wilson (Super Bowl XLIX) and Mahomes.

Mahomes and Hurts are both NFL regular-season MVP candidates.

“It’s not about me. It’s about the team,” the multi-dimensional Hurts said. “Football is the ultimate team game, and you can’t have one player with the belief that he can succeed without the others around him.”

Three Eagles were limited practice participants on Wednesday: right tackle Lane Johnson (groin), center Cam Jurgens (hip) and cornerback Avonte Maddox (toe), though the team listed “rest” as a secondary reason for their partial absence.

Kansas City wide receiver Kadarius Toney (ankle, hamstring) was limited in practice on Wednesday.

Reports: Lakers deal Russell Westbrook, land D’Angelo Russell

The Lakers, Jazz and Minnesota Timberwolves are finalizing a deal that would send Russell Westbrook to Utah and D’Angelo Russell to Los Angeles, ESPN and The Athletic reported Wednesday night.

Malik Beasley and Jarred Vanderbilt also will be headed to the Lakers, while the Jazz also will receive a top-four-protected 2027 first-round pick plus Juan Toscano-Anderson and Damian Jones from Los Angeles, per the reports.

Minnesota will acquire Mike Conley Jr. and Nickeil Alexander-Walker from Utah and will receive second-round draft-pick compensation as part of the deal.

Per The Athletic, the Timberwolves will get additional second-round draft picks, too.

The NBA trade deadline is Thursday.

Westbrook, 34, has been ineffective since coming to the Lakers ahead of the 2021-22 season. He’s started just three of 52 games this season and is averaging 15.9 points per game. He reportedly had a heated verbal exchange with coach Darvin Ham after Tuesday’s game, during which LeBron James broke the all-time scoring mark.

Russell will be returning to the Lakers, who drafted him No. 2 overall in 2015 before trading him to Brooklyn in June 2017 for Kyle Kuzma and Brook Lopez.

Russell, 26, was in his fourth season in Minnesota. The 2018-19 All-Star is averaging 17.9 points and 6.2 assists per game in 54 starts this season. His points production has decreased every season in Minnesota since averaging 21.7 for the Timberwolves in 12 games in 2019-20. He is a career 17.7-point scorer for four teams.

Conley, 35, is in his 16th NBA season and fourth in Utah. He’s averaging 10.7 points and 7.7 assists per game in 43 games (42 starts) this season. He spent his first 12 seasons in Memphis and averages 14.7 points per game for his career.

Vanderbilt, 23, was in his first season with Utah after parts of three with the Timberwolves. He is averaging 8.3 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 52 games (41 starts) this season.

Beasley, 26, served as a vital bench piece for the Jazz, averaging 13.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 55 games (13 starts). He too was in his first season in Utah after spending parts of three with Minnesota.

Alexander-Walker, 24, gave the Jazz 6.3 points and 2.1 assists per contest in 36 games (three starts) this season. For his career, he has averages of 8.7 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 194 games (38 starts).

Toscano-Anderson, 29, earned a championship ring as a little-used reserve with the Golden State Warriors last season. He is a little-used reserve for the Lakers this season, averaging 2.7 points and two rebounds in 30 games (seven starts).

Jones, 27, also was a minor factor for the Lakers this season, averaging 2.5 points and 2.5 rebounds in 22 games (one start). He is headed to a fifth team in his seven NBA seasons.

NFL News: Report: Bills hire Al Holcomb as defensive assistant

Al Holcomb, who finished out the 2022 season as the interim defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers, has been hired by the Buffalo Bills as a defensive assistant, NFL Network reported Wednesday.

Holcomb took over as DC when Phil Snow was fired by Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks in the aftermath of head coach Matt Rhule’s firing. Wilks called it his decision to move on from Snow.

Holcomb was also the defensive coordinator under Wilks in Arizona in 2018.
