NHL News: Injured Bruins G Jeremy Swayman, D Derek Forbort week to week

The Boston Bruins will be without goaltender Jeremy Swayman and defenseman Derek Forbort for a while, as coach Jim Montgomery termed both players week to week Thursday.

Swayman left Wednesday’s 6-5 overtime win over the Pittsburgh Penguins during the second period with a lower-body injury after Boston teammate Patrice Bergeron fell into him. Forbort (upper body) left during the first period of the same game after blocking a shot.

Linus Ullmark has started more games than Swayman thus far and will shoulder the load during Swayman’s absence. He will start for Boston on Thursday against the host New York Rangers.

The Bruins recalled goalie Keith Kinkaid from AHL Providence on an emergency basis.

Swayman is 2-1-0 through four games (three starts) this season with a .878 save percentage and a 3.45 goals-against average. Forbort had a goal and two assists through 10 games.

Boston (9-1-0) has surged to the top of the Eastern Conference standings despite starting the season with multiple injured players. Top-line forward Brad Marchand (hip) and key defensemen Charlie McAvoy (shoulder) and Matt Grzelcyk (shoulder) all underwent offseason surgeries and missed the beginning of the season.

While Marchand and Grzelcyk have since returned to the lineup, McAvoy is still rehabbing but returned to practice last week. Per ESPN, Montgomery said Thursday that he still had “boxes to be checked” before returning to game action.

“This is his first week getting back into a rhythm with us,” Montgomery said. “We’re just hopeful with him. No updated timeline. We have an internal process with him. He’s ahead of that Dec. 1 date, but we don’t know exactly.”

Also Thursday, Montgomery said forwards David Krejci (upper body) and Craig Smith (upper body) are day to day and will not play against the Rangers. They could be ready for Boston’s next game, Saturday at the Toronto Maple Leafs.

DOTA News: TSM.FTX part ways with support DUBU

TSM.FTX began the postseason tweaking of their roster on Thursday, parting ways with support Doo-yong “DuBu” Kim.

DuBu, 29, began his career in 2014 and has played with teams that include Fnatic and Geek Fam.

Earlier this year, the team finished second in ESL One Stockholm, losing to OG in the grand final. It qualified for The International 11 but went winless.

DuBu joined TSM in January.

“We can’t thank you enough for your hard work and effort over the past year and all the contributions you made to the team,” the organization tweeted Thursday. “We wish you all the best in you future, thank you for everything.”

He shared his gratitude with the team via Twitter.

“Thanks to @TSM and all the fans for your support throughout the year! I will continue grinding and striving to be the best,” he wrote. “Open to new opportunities in any region.”

NHL News: Sens activate G Cam Talbot from IR, will be back-up Thur.

The Ottawa Senators activated goaltender Cam Talbot off injured reserve Thursday ahead of their home game against the Vegas Golden Knights.

Talbot will be the No. 2 goalie Thursday night, available if necessary to relieve starter Anton Forsberg.

It will be the first time Talbot dresses for a regular-season game as a member of the Senators. Ottawa acquired him from the Minnesota Wild over the offseason straight up for goalie Filip Gustavsson. But Talbot suffered a rib injury during training camp in September.

“It feels good,” Talbot told reporters. “It’s a grind. You never know when these things are actually gonna heal themselves. There’s nothing you can do to hurry the process along. I just tried to stay ready, stay in shape and it’s nice to be back out there with the boys finally.”

The 35-year-old journeyman begins his 10th campaign with his sixth NHL team after time with the New York Rangers (2013-15), Edmonton Oilers (2015-19), Philadelphia Flyers (2019), Calgary Flames (2019-20) and Wild. Talbot compiled a career record of 201-142-34 with a .915 save percentage and a 2.63 goals-against average.

Without Talbot available, Forsberg has started eight of the Senators’ first nine games entering Thursday. In that time he has gone 3-5-0 with a .909 save percentage and a 3.18 GAA.

“From a pub star to proving himself as one of the best in the world. We are proud to have been part of his incredible journey!” OG wrote Thursday on Twitter.

From Jordan, the 17-year-old had competed with OG alongside Bozhidar “bzm” Bogdanov, Artem “Yuragi” Golubiev, Tommy “Taiga” Le and Mikhail “Misha” Agatov.

NHL News: Jackets, Avalanche look to snap slumps in Finland

The Colorado Avalanche have had a tough schedule to start the season. Six of their first nine games have come in back-to-back sets and they’ve already played on both American coasts.

So traveling to Finland for a fourth back-to-back seems normal for Colorado.

The Avalanche will take part in the NHL Global Series with the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday and Saturday. Friday’s game will air at noon in Denver and 2 p.m. in Columbus. Puck drop in Tampere, Finland, is at 8 p.m.

The Avalanche are coming off consecutive losses to New Jersey and the New York Islanders but it will be nearly six full days since they played when they face the Blue Jackets.

Both teams flew to Finland early in the week and have been practicing while getting adjusted to the time change and culture.

“Our schedule has been a little bit strange,” Colorado coach Jared Bednar said. “We’ve had days off stacked on top of days off.”

Two Avalanche players who don’t need to get used to the country are Finland natives Mikko Rantanen and Artturi Lehkonen.

Lehkonen grew up approximately two hours from Tampere and, like Rantanen, is expecting many familiar faces in the stands.

“You’ve got a bunch of people who want to come to the game,” Lehkonen said. “Try to get as many tickets as we can so all family members can come and watch the game.”

One face Colorado will welcome is the return of Valeri Nichushkin, who has missed the last two games with a lower-body injury. Nichushkin was practicing Thursday and is hopeful to play Friday.

Columbus is focused on breaking out of a slump as well as enjoying the local scenery. The Blue Jackets have lost their last three games and have been outscored 17-4 in those losses. They have allowed three or more goals in all but one of their 10 games.

“The legs are starting to get under us,” forward Jack Roslovic said. “We are a serious team and we need to start playing a little better.”

Columbus holds the distinction of being the last Eastern Conference team to beat Tampa Bay in a playoff series when it swept the Lightning in 2019 but lost in five games to them the next season. The Blue Jackets haven’t been back to the playoffs since but have higher hopes after signing Johnny Gaudreau to a free-agent contract in the summer.

Gaudreau has produced five goals and eight points in 10 games but the defense and goaltending have been porous. Elvis Merzlikins (4.75) and Daniil Tarasov (3.57) have a combined 4.29 goals-against average.

A week off and a transatlantic trip may help Columbus get things turned around.

“It’s a pretty exciting trip for a lot of guys, some guys that are from here,” coach Brad Larsen said. “For us as a team, as an organization, this is a neat experience. “I think this a real good opportunity for the team to enjoy what Finland has to offer, but we have to make sure we are focused when we have our practice time and are getting ready for the games.”

Team Vitality, Cloud9 and Fnatic won do-or-die Challengers Stage matches on Thursday to secure the final three berths in the Legends Stage of the Intel Extreme Masters XVII Rio Major in Rio de Janeiro.

Vitality defeated OG 2-1, Cloud9 swept Team GamerLegion 2-0 and Fnatic beat 9z Team 2-0 in the fifth and final round of matches in the Challengers Stage. The three losing teams were eliminated from the tournament.

The $1.25 million Counter-Strike: Global Offensive event began with 24 teams — 16 from Europe, six from the Americas and two from Asia-Pacific. Eight teams were seeded straight into the second round, called the Legends Stage. The other 16 teams competed in the Challengers Stage for the final eight berths in the Legends Stage.

The Challenge Stage used the Swiss system in which teams are reseeded after each round, with winners facing off in “high” matches the following round, and losers advancing to “low” matches. Early rounds consisted of a single map, while all elimination and advancement matches were best-of-three. The same procedures will be used in the Legends Stage, which runs from Saturday through Tuesday.

The playoffs, which will consist of single-elimination quarterfinals, semifinals and final, are set for Nov. 10-13. All playoff matches will be best-of-three.

The winning team will earn $500,000, 4,000 BLAST Premier ranking points and automatic berths in the BLAST Premier World Final, scheduled for Dec. 14-18 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, and the Intel Extreme Masters Katowice 2023, set for Jan. 31-Feb. 12 in Poland.

Vitality opened with a 19-17 overtime win over OG on Vertigo. OG responded with a 16-6 victory on Inferno before Vitality put it away by taking Dust II 16-8.

Mathieu “ZywOo” Herbaut of France and Emil “Magisk” Reif of Denmark led Vitality with 60 kills apiece. ZywOo had a plus-19 kills-to-deaths differential while Magisk was at plus-7. Adam “NEOFRAG” Zouhar of the Czech Republic paced OG with 66 kills and a plus-12 K-D differential.

Cloud9 beat GamerLegion on Overpass and Mirage by identical 16-13 scores.

Dmitry “sh1ro” Sokolov of Russia led Cloud9’s balanced attack with 46 kills and a plus-14 K-D differential. Mihai “iM” Ivan of Romania had 40 kills to lead GamerLegion.

Fnatic got by 9z, winning Mirage 16-11 and eking out the clincher on Nuke 16-14.

Nico “nicoodoz” Tamjidi of Denmark posted 46 kills on a plus-14 K-D for Fnatic. Uruguay’s Franco “dgt” Garcia matched nicoodoz’s 46 kills while logging a plus-10 differential to carry 9z.

NAS News: NASCAR notebook: Ross Chastain still can’t believe decisive move

PHOENIX — Ross Chastain has spent much of his young career overcoming obstacles and exceeding expectations.

However, the 29-year-old Floridian’s singular clutch move to qualify for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race (3 p.m. ET on NBC, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) at Phoenix Raceway wasn’t even an expectation, it was a once-an-era moment that will undoubtedly go down in NASCAR lore.

And Chastain himself still can’t help but smile when he talks about it.

His last lap, last-ditch effort to make his first title field is one of the most talked-about, tweeted-about, replayed moves in recent history.

With less than one lap to go at the half-mile Martinsville (Va.) Speedway last Sunday, he purposely slammed his No. 1 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet hard into the outside wall, floored the gas and “walled” his way from the 10th position to finish fifth place — enough to secure the final playoff transfer into Sunday’s Championship Race.

This week Chastain said he’s heard from people he hasn’t talked to in years, or ever before. His phone is full of voicemails, and he counted a thousand text messages. Team co-owner, Grammy Award-winning superstar Pitbull, called, too.

“He checks in, more than just for the wins and good races,” Chastain said of Pitbull. “He loves it that we’re up against some real giants in the sports and we keep fighting and we keep winning. Not that we won the race in Martinsville, but we won the moment to transfer, and he was really excited.”

Chastain said he has looked back at the video and still cannot explain the physics of his move, “what happened, why that car did not slow down, why it kept air in the tires,” — how he made it to the finish line and actually set a track record.

“Why it worked, I don’t know, but I have no ideas, no plans to ever do that again because it was not pleasant,” he said.

“I’m proud of it, I’m proud we’ve moved the needle for fans and casual people that were not fans and now they want to experience NASCAR and come to track and feel that roar that thunder when we go by,” Chastain said, noting how members from other teams came out to congratulate him and give him back slaps when came down pit road after the race.

Chastain is optimistic about his title hopes this weekend. His best finish in eight starts is a runner-up showing this spring. He is having a breakout year with the second-year Trackhouse organization scoring his first two career NASCAR Cup Series wins (at Circuit of The Americas and Talladega-1). He has a career high 20 top-10 finishes and led a career high 692 laps.

Chase Elliott brings high expectations to Phoenix

Chase Elliott refused to select a favorite from among his Championship 4 colleagues during Thursday’s NASCAR Media Day press conference, insisting that after a 35-race season to date if you qualified for this weekend’s Championship Race, you could be the champion.

Elliott’s No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet will compete against Chastain, Joe Gibbs Racing’s Christopher Bell and Team Penske’s Joey Logano for the season trophy on Sunday. Both Elliott and Logano are racing for their second championship. Both Chastain and Bell are making their Championship 4 debut this weekend.

Elliott has a strong record at Phoenix — winning the 2020 title race from pole position to claim his first title. He has scored eight top-10s in 13 starts and led 546 laps at the one-mile track. He comes into the championship finale with only a pair of top-10 finishes in the nine playoff races — a win at Talladega, Ala., and a runner-up at Bristol, Tenn.

“Personally, being a part of it the last couple years and as this format has kind of progressed and changed, I think if you make it to that last race, I think you have a shot,” Elliott said. “If you’re in the Final Four, I think you have a chance.

“We’ve seen this, you don’t have to dominate all day to win (the title). … What Jimmie (Johnson) did in 2016 is a great example of not necessarily being the best car all day but when it came time to execute at the end of the day, put together some good restarts, some good pit stops and make it happen, they did.

“Our playoffs hasn’t been great, but with this format, it really doesn’t matter now. If you’re part of the show, you’re part of the show. And if you have a shot this weekend, you have a shot to change the narrative and write the end of the story however you want.”

Both Logano (Las Vegas) and Bell (Martinsville, Va.) won races in the Playoffs’ Round of 8 to earn their title opportunity. Elliott and Chastain “pointed” their way into championship contention.

In a rather unusual twist, the Hendrick Motorsports team could capture both the driver and team championship but with different drivers. Elliott is racing for the driver’s title and Kyle Larson qualified the team’s No. 5 Chevrolet for the team owner’s championship.

“The best thing that could happen is one of us wins the race and the other runs second and you can check both boxes and we all go home happy,” Elliott said. “That would be choice number one for me, and I think that’s feasible.”

For Joey Logano, nothing short of a championship will do

To say Joey Logano is optimistic about the way circumstances have played out over the past three weeks would be a massive understatement.

First of all, Logano won the first race in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs’ Round of 8 on Oct. 16 at Las Vegas. The certainty of advancement to the Championship 4 has given his No. 22 Team Penske team the luxury of extra time to prepare for Sunday’s title race at Phoenix.

At 32, Logano is the oldest of the four Championship 4 drivers. With 14 full seasons in the Cup Series and 506 races under his belt, he is by far the most experienced.

For Logano, it’s an opportunity not to waste.

“I feel like we’re in a great spot right now,” Logano said on Thursday during Championship 4 Media Day interviews at the Phoenix Convention Center. “I feel like our team is in a great spot for a lot of reasons. For one, we’re not happy to be here. We’re not just happy to be in the Championship 4. This isn’t enough for us.

“I feel like that’s the number one driver for the 22 team to win this thing. I think with that mentality and the three weeks that we’ve had since Vegas to really focus in here, it’s going to give us a huge advantage to not only have a good practice plan and set our car up, but also execute this race correctly, on top of the experience we’ve got.

“I’ve never felt more solid in this position than I do right now. With that said, I’m ready to go racing and get out there, because we feel prepared. We’re ready to go to battle.”

Christopher Bell is OK with relative obscurity

Given the dramatic way Christopher Bell advanced to the Championship 4, it might seem strange that the driver of the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota thinks of himself as completely under the radar.

In a win-or-bust situation at the Charlotte ROVAL on Oct. 9, Bell took advantage of a late caution, won the race and catapulted into the Round of 8.

After sustaining two flat tires a week later at Texas and finishing 11th a week later at Homestead-Miami, Bell once again needed a victory to keep his championship hopes alive. He took control of the Round of 8 elimination race shortly after the halfway point and triumphed once again.

Bell comes to Phoenix with crew chief Adam Stevens on his pit box. Stevens is the only active crew chief in the Cup garage with more than one championship, having won titles with Kyle Busch in 2015 and 2019.

But Bell thinks Stevens may be overlooked this season — because of his driver.

“I think that maybe has a lot to do with my role,” Bell said. “Nobody really realizes I drive race cars for a living, for the most part. I embrace that role. I guess I don’t do anything else to advocate myself or anything like that.

“Any time it seems like people are teamed up with me, they’re off the radar.”

Bell says he doesn’t mind the perceived anonymity.

“It’s just kind of the way it’s unfolded over my … I don’t really know how long,” he said. “That’s fine by me. Maybe I’ll be the least famous Cup champion one day.”

Watch Black MP told by far-right colleague, ‘Go back to Africa, French Parliament suspended

0

On Thursday, a session of the French Parliament was suspended after unprecedented behavior by a far-right Member of Parliament (MP). A parliamentarian of the far-right party led by Marie Le Pen shouted “Go back to Africa, when a black parliamentarian was asking a question about finding a port to help hundreds of migrants, rescued at sea, as requested by NGO SOS Méditerranée.

Assemblée Nationale President Yaël Braun-Pivet questioned which MP had said that phrase. The session was then suspended. The National Assembly President Braun-Privet also said that the there would be an investigation on the comment, on Friday.

The verbal attack was made by Grégoire de Fournas 31, a newly elected National Rally MP for the Gironde department in South West France. Carlos Martens Bilongo, 31 of the left-wing France Insoumis (France Unbowed) party was verbally attacked.

Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said, “Racism has no place in our democracy.” She urged the assembly to place sanctions on the far-right MP.

LFI leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon tweeted that the comments by Fournas were “beyond intolerable.” The leader said that the deputy should be removed from the National Assembly.

National Rally leader Marie Le Pen has not commented on the remark by her party member. Jordan Bardella, who is expected to succeed her as party leader at a congress this weekend, defended the deputy. He said that the deputy had meant that the boats should go back to African ports.

Mr. de Fournas later appeared on BFM television and defended his comment. He said that the National Rally wanted to halt illegal immigrants from Africa to France. He said that there was a surge in the number of people who were trying to immigrate to France.

He also accused the LFI of “manipulation.” His party also denied that there was a personal attack against Mr. Bilongo. Carlos Martens Bilongo Is a teacher, who is born on France. He is of African descent.

National Rally leader Marie Le Pen lost to Emmanuel Macron, for the second time, in the recently held presidential elections in France.

Cancer-causing chemical levels are increasing in more varieties of dry shampoo products.

0

Some of your favorite dry shampoo brands such as Not Your Mothers, Paul Mitchell, Sebastian, Batiste, Kerastase , Amika, Kristen Ess, Bumble and Bumble, IGK and Redken are under a health hazard warning.

11 samples of dry shampoos showed levels over 10 times more than 2 parts per million (ppm), the FDA limit for drugs.

In its recently submitted FDA Citizen Petition, Valisure found quantifiable levels of benzene in 70% of the samples tested, and some samples taken directly from contaminated air and analyzed later indicate the sprayed product may have contained up to 170 times the conditionally restricted FDA concentration limit of 2 parts per million (ppm) (intended for certain drugs, when the use of benzene is unavoidable to produce a product that has a significant therapeutic advance).

According to the petition, three lots of dry shampoo products from one brand contained spray that contained more than 100 ppm of benzene, and some samples examined by Valisure revealed levels that were more than 10 times the FDA medication limit. The petition also claims that Valisure found benzene in a number of other frequently used items, including several sunscreens and  some hand sanitizers.

Over ten times this FDA limit were found in 11 of the samples Valisure tested. These results represent the highest and broadest detection of benzene by Valisure in a consumer product category to date. Valisure is requesting the FDA better define limits for benzene contamination in cosmetics and other products, as well as a recall of the contaminated batches.

“The detection of high levels of benzene in dry shampoos should be cause for significant concern since these products are likely used indoors, where benzene may linger and be inhaled for prolonged periods of time,” says David Light, Chief Executive Officer of Valisure. “These and other issues identified by Valisure, including the detection of benzene in body spray, hand sanitizer, and sunscreen products, strongly underscore the importance of independent testing and its need to be better integrated into an increasingly complex and vulnerable global supply chain.” Source Valisure.

The brand Not Your Mothers, Paul Mitchell, Sebastian, Batiste, Kerastase , Amika, Kristen Ess, Bumble and Bumble, IGK and Redken to name a few. To see the full list of dry shampoo products with high levels of the cancer causing chemical visit Valisure.

What are alternatives to using dry shampoo?

Corn starch can be used as a substitute for dry shampoo because it is both safe and absorbent. If you have darker hair and are concerned about leaving a  white cast residue, combine a little amount of this product with cocoa powder and use a contour brush or your hands to apply it to your hairline.

Arrowroot powder and translucent setting powder can lightly be dusted in oily scalp areas. Blotting oil facial papers will also help absorb extra oil. Baking soda works well if you have blonde hair.

While not good for hair because it is drying, in a pinch you can mix some 50% rubbing alcohol and water and lightly press on the tips of your fingers and rub into the scalp. You can also use a volumizing shampoo and skip conditioner completely at the scalp area when washing your hair.

Blockchain startup Chain has inked a deal with Miami Heat. The Web3 company will be the team’s “official Web3 and blockchain infrastructure partner.” The deal with the NBA giant is for an undisclosed amount that will involve advertising and promotional activities. Earlier Chain had inked a deal with NFL’s New England Patriots.

Chain will add its logo to the Miami Heat shooting jersey. A press release by the company and the sports team said that Chain and Miami Heat were collaborating to bridge “the gap between the sports industry and Web3 technology” for both their audiences.

Chain CEO Deepak Thapliyal said that they wanted to engage with the “South Florida communities and Heat fans” to expand the Chain brand as well as “to tell the story of blockchain technology.” This partnership with Heat is happening when the crypto world is facing a freeze as some investors call the current period a “crypto winter.”

Chain has also recently partnered with NFL’s New England Patriots and its associated brands after signing a four-year agreement with Kraft Sports + Entertainment. The blockchain startup is the official blockchain and Web3 sponsor for the Patriots.

Chain has specialized in merging Web2 brands with blockchain the technology in Web3. It released its non fungible token (NFT) with famous jewelry brand Tiffany & Co. and NFT blue chip CryptoPunks which brought in $12 million in sales volume.

Miami Heat has also partnered with crypto companies in the past. Earlier in the year, it inked a 19-year partnership deal with crypto exchange FTX. The historic $135 million deal rebranded their home stadium as the FTX Arena. It was earlier called the American Airlines Arena. The huge indoor arena is the home of the NBA team Miami Heat. It can be used not only for basketball games but also for other sports and music events.
