Transfer-infused Butler out to regain bounce under Thad Matta

For the first time since Feb. 17, 2001, Thad Matta will be prowling the Hinkle Fieldhouse sideline as Butler’s head coach when the Bulldogs open the season Monday night vs. New Orleans.

Matta, who hasn’t coached since he and Ohio State parted ways in May 2017, has raised expectations at Butler since returning to his alma mater in April. He succeeded LaVall Jordan, his former shooting guard who led the Bulldogs to just one NCAA Tournament in five seasons.

“I love what this place stands for,” Matta said at the Big East media day, “and I look at this place as a great opportunity to come in and try to rebuild something that Butler deserves.”

In the wake of Butler’s 14-19 season, Matta boosted the team’s roster with some serious shopping in the transfer portal: North Carolina State center Manny Bates, Purdue point guard Eric Hunter Jr., Akron wing Ali Ali and Georgia State power forward Jalen Thomas. Nonetheless, the Big East coaches pegged the Bulldogs to finish eighth in the 11-team conference.

Butler won its exhibition game against Division II Tiffin by just 10 points, but Matta didn’t have the services of Ali and Thomas. Ali, who averaged a team-high 13.9 points last year for Akron’s NCAA Tournament squad, has missed time due to a concussion and a broken nose.

New Orleans posted an 18-14 record last year but lost its pair of high-scoring, all-conference guards to graduation — Derek St. Hilaire (20.1 points per game) and Troy Green (16.6 ppg). But 12th-year coach Mark Slessinger and the Privateers have enough back to earn the No. 3 spot in the Southland Conference’s preseason poll.

Junior forward Tyson Jackson (8.7 ppg, 3.9 rpg) and senior forward Simeon Kirkland (8.1 ppg, 5.3 rpg) received second-team preseason all-league honors. They join senior guard Daniel Sackey (6.6 ppg, 2.8 apg) as New Orleans’ returning starters.

“It is an incredible honor to open up the season at the historic Hinkle Fieldhouse against Butler on national TV,” Slessinger said. “We have a very deep and talented team, and I’m excited to see them compete on Monday.”

No. 17 Arizona measures new crew against Nicholls State

No. 17 Arizona, which lost three players to the NBA draft, is looking to reload around a strong junior core as it opens the season Monday night against Nicholls State in Tucson, Ariz.

The Wildcats have returning starters in point guard Kerr Kriisa and power forward Azuolas Tubelis, and two other key juniors — wing Pelle Larsson and center Oumar Ballo — will move into the starting lineup.

Combined with a strong group of newcomers, Arizona looks talented and deep, which is why it was picked to finish second in the Pac-12 behind UCLA in a vote of league media.

Second-year Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd figures to experiment with new combinations against a Nicholls team that went 21-12 last season and won the 2022 Southland Conference regular-season title.

Lloyd will be without his projected fifth starter. Texas transfer guard Courtney Ramey will miss the first three games due to an NCAA suspension for participating in the Portsmouth Invitational, an NBA draft showcase, in April.

“I’m not a guy that sits around at night and gets out my protractor and a ruler and three different colored pens and says, ‘Well, if you play him 16.4 minutes, he can play,'” Lloyd said. “I don’t do that. I coach off gut. I coach off instinct. I coach off what my eyes are telling me.

“I think we’ve got good, talented young players and I want them to fight for it a little bit, but I’m hopeful they can all help us.”

Ramey’s absence could open more time for sophomore Adama Bal, an 18-year-old still scratching the surface of his ability. He scored 15 points in 15 minutes in a 91-61 exhibition win over Western Oregon on Nov. 1.

Newcomers to watch include Campbell transfer wing Cedric Henderson Jr. and Estonian freshman big man Henri Veesaar.

Nicholls is led by Latrell Jones, who averaged 11.9 points per game last season and was selected preseason first-team all-conference last month. Other key returning players are Pierce Spencer (9.0 ppg) and Manny Littles (8.8 ppg, 7.9 rpg).

The Colonels lost Southland Player of the Year Ty Gordon but hope to continue momentum created by 32-year-old coach Austin Claunch, who is entering his fifth season.

“It’s been an exciting time,” Claunch said. “We want to continue to be that program that is always in contention and that is always competing for championships.”

Lloyd went 17-0 at McKale Center last season and is promising more of the attacking style the Wildcats displayed on both ends last season.

The Wildcats were third nationally in scoring last season (84 points per game), but must replace the 17.7 points per game from lottery pick Bennedict Mathurin. Arizona also shows a lot of energy on defense and a willingness to jump into passing lanes.

“Of course, we’re going to be aggressive defensively,” Lloyd said. “I mean, you saw us play last year, right?

“I’m not going to be conservative. Conservative ain’t my nature. We play an aggressive style no matter who we have. If we were playing zone, we’d play it aggressive. … You can be aggressive and solid. Those two things can go together.”

Jim Boeheim certain Syracuse will Dance, starting Monday with Lehigh

Jim Boeheim is coming off his first losing season in 46 years as Syracuse head coach, but you wouldn’t know it by listening to him this week.

“We’re going to be in the NCAA Tournament,” Boeheim said after Tuesday’s practice in Syracuse. “This is the best team we’ve had in a while.”

Boeheim’s confidence will be put to the test Monday against visiting Lehigh in both teams’ season opener.

The Orange will attempt to bounce back from a 16-17 campaign in which they lost five of their final six games to miss the postseason entirely. Three of their top four scorers, including two of Boeheim’s sons, have moved to the professional ranks. But from Boeheim’s seat, they left plenty of talent behind.

The top returning scorer, Joe Girard III, shifts from point guard to shooting guard for his senior season. After averaging 13.8 points and 4.2 assists last season, Girard moves to make way for freshman Judah Mintz, a top-50 recruit.

“He’s as explosive a point guard as we’ve had here in a long time” Boeheim said of Mintz. “He’s like Jonny Flynn, but he’s much bigger. I think he can get 14 to 15 points every game and he could get 25 some nights.”

The other returning starter for the Orange is senior center Jesse Edwards, who took a big step forward last season by averaging 12 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.8 blocks.

Sophomore forward Benny Williams is among the youngsters who need to step up if Syracuse is going to return to its winning form.

“He has to get 10 to 11 points and six rebounds for us,” Boeheim said of Williams, who averaged 1.9 points and 1.4 rebounds last season.

Lehigh lost 10 of its first 11 games last season en route to a 13-19 campaign. This season, the Mountain Hawks are picked to finish third in the Patriot League behind the strength of senior guard Evan Taylor, who averaged a team-high 13 points a season ago.

“Especially since it’s the beginning of the year, it is a great way for us to test how good we are and see what we can learn from, especially since we are playing teams like Syracuse and Virginia Tech, back-to-back,” Taylor said.

NBA roundup: Bucks down Pistons again, remain unbeaten

Giannis Antetokounmpo racked up 32 points, 12 rebounds and five steals and the host Milwaukee Bucks tied a franchise record for their best start by downing the Detroit Pistons for the second time in three nights, 116-91 on Wednesday.

The Bucks matched the 1971-72 and 2018-19 teams by beginning the season 7-0. The current group retained its status of being the league’s only undefeated team.

Milwaukee, which defeated the Pistons for the 15th time in the last 16 regular-season meetings, barely squeaked past its Central Division rival 110-108 on Monday. Jrue Holiday had 26 points and seven rebounds for the Bucks.

Saddiq Bey led Detroit with 22 points and Isaiah Stewart had 16 points and 10 rebounds. The team’s star, Cade Cunningham, was limited to 10 points.

Cavaliers 114, Celtics 113 (OT)

Donovan Mitchell scored nine straight points in the final three minutes of regulation and finished with 25 overall to lead Cleveland past visiting Boston.

Darius Garland returned from a five-game absence caused by a left eye injury to add a team-leading 29 points and 12 assists as the Cavaliers won their sixth straight and recorded their second overtime win against Boston in a span of six days.

Jayson Tatum tied the game with a soaring one-handed jam with 6.7 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Tatum finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds, and Jaylen Brown added a game-high 30 points for the Celtics.

Wizards 121, 76ers 111

Kristaps Porzingis scored 30 points, Bradley Beal added 29 and visiting Washington snapped a three-game losing skid while ending Philadelphia’s three-game winning streak.

Though a tight game most of the way, the Wizards never relinquished their lead after pulling ahead late in the first quarter.

The 76ers, playing without Joel Embiid (non-COVID illness), got 32 points from Tyrese Maxey plus 24 points and 10 assists from James Harden.

Grizzlies 111, Trail Blazers 106

Desmond Bane scored 20 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter and also had eight rebounds and five assists to help Memphis hold off host Portland.

Ja Morant recorded 20 points, nine rebounds and seven assists as the Grizzlies halted a two-game slide. Steven Adams added 14 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.

Anfernee Simons had 31 points and eight assists for the Trail Blazers, who lost for just the second time in seven games this season. Jusuf Nurkic added 23 points and 13 rebounds, and Jerami Grant scored 23 points.

Heat 110, Kings 107

Tyler Herro made a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 2.5 seconds left, leading Miami to a win over visiting Sacramento.

Herro’s shot came after a step-back and then a pump fake before finally firing over Terence Davis. Herro, who missed most of Miami’s win over Golden State on Tuesday due to a left eye contusion, finished with a game-high 26 points and a team-high 12 rebounds.

Each team competed without its best player. Miami’s Jimmy Butler sat out due to a sore left hip. Sacramento’s De’Aaron Fox missed the game due to a sore right knee. The Kings were led by Domantas Sabonis (22 points, team-high 12 rebounds, game-high eight assists) and Kevin Huerter (22 points).

Hawks 112, Knicks 99

Dejounte Murray scored a career-high 36 points for visiting Atlanta, which stormed back from a 23-point, first-half deficit to rout New York.

The Hawks, who played much of the second half without star guard Trae Young as he was treated for a left eye contusion, snapped a two-game losing streak. The Knicks have lost three straight.

Murray also had nine assists and six steals, and De’Andre Hunter put up 21 points for the Hawks. Jalen Brunson (20 points) and RJ Barrett (19) led the Knicks.

Raptors 143, Spurs 100

Pascal Siakam scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in three quarters of play and Gary Trent Jr. added 24 points as visiting Toronto blitzed short-handed San Antonio.

The Raptors led by 15 points at halftime, then outscored the Spurs 40-21 in the third quarter for its second straight win and fourth in five outings.

Keita Bates-Diop led San Antonio with 17 points. Malaki Branham added 13 and Josh Richardson scored 10 for the Spurs, who played without starters Keldon Johnson (calf) and Devin Vassell (knee).

Mavericks 103, Jazz 100

Luka Doncic scored 33 points and had 11 assists as host Dallas overcame double-digit deficits on multiple occasions to beat Utah.

Doncic, the NBA’s leading scorer, has scored at least 31 in all seven Mavericks games. That feat makes Doncic just the third player in NBA history to record 30-plus points in each of the first seven games of the season, and the first to do it since Wilt Chamberlain in the 1962-63 season.

Jordan Clarkson finished with 22 points and eight assists to lead the Jazz, but he missed a game-tying attempt in the last second.

Bulls 106, Hornets 88

Javonte Green poured in 17 points off the bench and Chicago gained late energy to pull away for a victory over visiting Charlotte.

The Bulls rode their bench, including 16 points from Goran Dragic and 10 points from Derrick Jones Jr., to the win on a night when DeMar DeRozan only scored nine points and Zach LaVine had 10. Nikola Vucevic added 14 points and 13 rebounds, and Patrick Williams tallied 16 points.

For the Hornets, Kelly Oubre Jr. racked up 24 points, Jalen McDaniels and Mason Plumlee both notched 11 points and Dennis Smith Jr. supplied 10 points.

Clippers 109, Rockets 101

Paul George scored 28 points, Marcus Morris Sr. added a 21-point double-double and Los Angeles staved off Houston for the win.

Morris, who scored 18 of his 21 points in the first half, grabbed 10 rebounds. George shot 10-for-20 and combined with Morris to shoot 7-for-16 from behind the arc.

Alperen Sengun compiled 26 points and 13 rebounds for the Rockets. Kevin Porter Jr. and Jalen Green added 22 points apiece.

Lakers 120, Pelicans 117

Lonnie Walker IV scored 28 points, LeBron James and Anthony Davis added 20 each and Los Angeles pulled out an overtime victory over visiting New Orleans to win consecutive games after an 0-5 start to the season.

Davis added 16 rebounds while James had 10 boards and eight assists as the Lakers finished off the victory despite blowing a 16-point, third-quarter lead. Matt Ryan hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer for the Lakers to send the game into overtime in just his sixth career contest.

Zion Williamson scored 27 points for the Pelicans. CJ McCollum had 22 points and eight assists for New Orleans, which finished 1-2 on its road trip.

Lakers blow lead, rally to edge Pelicans in OT

Lonnie Walker IV scored 28 points, LeBron James and Anthony Davis added 20 each and the Los Angeles Lakers pulled out a 120-117 overtime victory over the visiting New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday to win consecutive games after an 0-5 start to the season.

Zion Williamson scored 27 points for the Pelicans to rebound from a slow start when he had just six points at the half. CJ McCollum had 22 points and eight assists for New Orleans, which finished 1-2 on its road trip, with the win coming in Los Angeles against the Clippers on Monday.

McCollum missed a 3-point attempt that would have tied the game with 6.7 seconds remaining in the extra period.

Russell Westbrook had 13 points, nine assists and seven rebounds off the bench for the Lakers.

With Los Angeles trailing 111-108 in regulation, Walker had a chance to tie the game, but his 3-point attempt missed the mark with 2.8 seconds remaining. New Orleans’ Dyson Daniels was unable to put the game away when he missed a pair of free throws with 1.6 seconds left. Ryan, who finished with a career-high 11 points, then tied it.

The Lakers led 60-44 less than a minute into the second half before the Pelicans charged back into the game. New Orleans used a 15-0 run late in the third to take a brief lead at 77-76. The Pelicans outscored the Lakers 35-26 in the third quarter and trailed 82-79 heading to the fourth.

Troy Brown Jr. finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Lakers, while Jose Alvarado had 15 points for the Pelicans and Trey Murphy III added 12. Jonas Valanciunas pulled down 10 rebounds for New Orleans.

The Pelicans were without starters Brandon Ingram (concussion protocol) and Herbert Jones (knee), each for the fourth consecutive game.

Grizzlies hold off Blazers behind Desmond Bane’s 29 points

Desmond Bane scored 20 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter and also had eight rebounds and five assists to help the Memphis Grizzlies register a 111-106 victory over the host Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night.

Ja Morant recorded 20 points, nine rebounds and seven assists as Memphis halted a two-game slide. Steven Adams added 14 points, 11 rebounds and five assists, and Santi Aldama scored 11 points.

Anfernee Simons had 31 points and eight assists for the Trail Blazers, who lost for just the second time in seven games this season. Jusuf Nurkic added 23 points and 13 rebounds, and Jerami Grant scored 23 points.

Portland star Damian Lillard (calf) missed his second straight game.

Memphis never trailed, but the contest was tied at 100 before Bane tallied the game’s next seven points and the Grizzlies’ final 11.

Bane hit a floater to give the Grizzlies a 102-100 lead with 2:03 left, and then he made five of six free throws to make it a seven-point margin with 31.6 seconds remaining.

Grant’s four-point play with 23.7 seconds left made it a one-possession game, but Bane made four more free throws in a row to boost the lead to seven with 8.4 seconds left as Memphis closed it out.

Reserves John Konchar and David Roddy added 10 points apiece for Memphis, which shot 45.8 percent from the field and made 13 of 28 (46.4 percent) from 3-point range. Bane was 5 of 8 from behind the arc.

The Trail Blazers made 40.4 percent of their shots, including 13 of 33 (39.4 percent) from behind the arc. Keon Johnson scored 10 points off the bench.

Bane made two 3-pointers and Konchar added another as the Grizzlies scored the first nine points of the final stanza to take an 87-72 lead.

Bane drained a straightaway 3-pointer to make it 92-75 with 9:36 left.

Dillon Brooks made two free throws for Memphis before Portland answered with three 3-pointers, the first by Grant and the next two by Simons, to knot the score at 96 with 3:39 remaining.

Morant scored 12 points in the first half as Memphis led 52-45 at the break. Nurkic had 15 in the half for the Trail Blazers.

Portland tallied the final five points of the third quarter to trail 78-72 entering the fourth.

MLB News: White Sox name Pedro Grifol as new manager

The Chicago White Sox hired Kansas City Royals bench coach Pedro Grifol as their new manager on Thursday.

Grifol, 52, replaces Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa, who missed the final 34 games of this season because of health issues. The White Sox missed the playoffs and finished the campaign with an 81-81 record, 11 games behind the first-place Cleveland Guardians in the American League Central.

Grifol becomes the 42nd manager in franchise history and third in four seasons.

“Pedro is a bilingual, modern baseball thinker who brings two-plus decades of experience in a variety of roles,” White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said in a statement. “He is an excellent communicator and an experienced game planner who brings a high energy and detail-oriented approach to leadership. He is committed to building an inclusive and cohesive clubhouse, and we could not be happier to have Pedro leading our club.”

Grifol had served as a coach in the Royals organization since 2013 and interviewed for the opening in Kansas City. Tampa Bay Rays bench coach Matt Quatraro was named Royals manager on Sunday.

Grifol played collegiately at Florida State and spent nine years in the minor leagues but never reached MLB as a player. He was an All-American catcher in 1991 with the Seminoles and played in the College World Series twice.

MLB News: Astros ask Justin Verlander to keep Phillies down in Game 5

PHILADELPHIA — The Houston Astros are guaranteed at least one more game in their own ballpark.

The goal now is to head back home with a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven World Series.

After Houston no-hit the Phillies in Game 4 on Wednesday to even the series at two wins apiece, the teams will face off on Thursday in the final contest at Philadelphia.

Cristian Javier, Bryan Abreu, Rafael Montero and Ryan Pressly combined to hold the Phillies hitless in the Astros’ 5-0 victory on Wednesday.

It was a major turnaround from one night earlier when the Phillies bashed five home runs and won 7-0.

“It’s a strange series,” Astros manager Dusty Baker said.

Houston regained the positive momentum from the second no-hitter in World Series history. The New York Yankees’ Don Larsen threw a perfect game against the Brooklyn Dodgers in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series.

Whether it was a no-hitter or a 13-12 slugfest, the Astros simply needed a win.

Now they’ll turn to presumptive American League Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander to give them an edge.

Verlander (18-4, 1.75 ERA regular season; 1-0, 7.20 ERA postseason) struggled in Game 1 as he allowed five runs in five innings.

His World Series history has been ugly: 0-6 in eight starts with a 6.07 ERA that is the worst ever among pitchers who threw at least 30 innings in the Fall Classic.

After watching film, Verlander believes that he is ready to bounce back in a big way.

“I think a lot of times the execution follows mechanics,” he said. “So, yeah, I did find some mechanical things that I needed to clean up. I’ve been working really hard since then. But there’s really no way to know how it’s going until you get in the game and see the hitters’ reactions.

“So you work as hard as you possibly can, you take that into practice, you see how it feels.”

The Astros have the utmost confidence in their ace.

“He’s locked in,” third baseman Alex Bregman said. “He’s focused. He’s ready to go. He’s ready to compete.”

The Phillies, meanwhile, will look to respond from their first home loss in the 2022 postseason following six consecutive wins.

“They’ll come back and prep and compete like they always do,” Philadelphia manager Rob Thomson said of his players.

The Phillies were no-hit by five New York Mets pitchers on April 29 but responded to win the next day.

“We’ve just got to go get it tomorrow,” Phillies designated hitter Bryce Harper said.

Philadelphia will hand the ball to Noah Syndergaard (10-10, 3.94 ERA regular season; 0-0, 1.69 postseason).

Syndergaard was scheduled to start Game 3 on Monday before the contest was postponed due to rain. Ranger Suarez got the start instead and threw five scoreless innings, with Syndergaard pushed back to Game 5.

The veteran right-hander said that he is prepared no matter the circumstances.

“Yeah, I just try to go out there and have success in whichever role they choose to use me in,” Syndergaard said. “I think it’s going to be really cool to have the opportunity to go toe to toe with Justin Verlander.”

Thomson said he hopes Syndergaard can last at least three innings.

Syndergaard is excited for the opportunity considering that he just joined the Phillies from the Los Angeles Angels in an Aug. 2 trade.

“This year’s just been kind of a whirlwind for me,” he said. “I think anybody that gets traded in the middle of the year, used as like a rental piece, it kind of puts anybody out of their comfort zone. But I think it’s really helped me grow as a person and as a pitcher.”

What to Expect From Kellogg’s Upcoming Q3 Results?

0

RBC Capital analysts provided their outlook on Kellogg Company (NYSE:K) ahead of the upcoming Q3 earnings announcement, expecting adjusted EPS of $0.95, slightly below the Street estimate of $0.98.
The analysts expect growth to continue being driven by strong double-digit pricing offsetting mild volume softness. To date, trends in packaged food have remained strong, with elasticities holding up surprisingly well, supported by consumer tradedown from AFH meals to at-home, and snacking boosted by strong summer mobility.
The analysts expect the company to continue providing conservative forward commentary on top of strong results. They expect the continued assumption of further volume declines despite the fact that elasticities are so far holding up. The analysts expect the company to be able to raise the full-year guidance or, at the least, reaffirm the existing 7-8% growth guide at the higher end.
