NHL News: Wild finish winning road trip by beating Blackhawks

Matt Boldy scored twice and Kirill Kaprizov and Frederick Gaudreau converted chances in a shootout to lift the visiting Minnesota Wild to a 4-3 conquest of the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday night.

Mason Shaw added a goal and an assist for the Wild, who produced three victories during their five-game road trip.

Minnesota dictated play for much of overtime. Mats Zuccarello hit the post moments before Chicago goaltender Alex Stalock denied Joel Eriksson Ek on a breakaway.

Wild goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 23 of 26 shots in regulation and overtime as he faced his former team for the first time since arriving in Minnesota via trade in March.

The Blackhawks’ Andreas Athanasiou and Boldy scored 17 seconds apart in the third period. Chicago held leads of 1-0 and 3-2, but managed the advantages for a collective 39 seconds.

Jake McCabe opened the scoring for Chicago at 6:39 of the first period, sending a lost wrist shot from just inside the blue line past Fleury, who was screened.

Minnesota tied the game just 22 seconds later. After a scrum along the side wall, Boldy corralled a pass from Ryan Hartman and made a move to beat Stalock.

Shaw netted the go-ahead tally, his first NHL goal, midway through the period, converting a chance on an open net after Sam Steel faked Stalock out of the crease.

Chicago tied the game at 2 at 10:27 of the second period when Jonathan Toews fired a centering pass past Fleury for his team-high fifth goal of the season.

Hartman left the game in the second period with an apparent right shoulder injury. He was taken to the ice in a fight with Chicago’s Jarred Tinordi.

The Blackhawks’ Max Domi was assessed a game misconduct for roughing late in the third period after coming to the defense of Patrick Kane. Kane was taken down by Tyson Jost on a play that resulted in a boarding penalty against Jost.

Tinordi had two assists.

Chicago was without Seth Jones one night after the defenseman suffered an injured right thumb while blocking a shot during an overtime loss at Buffalo. The Blackhawks expect Jones to be out 3-4 weeks, the club announced before Sunday’s game.

NHL News: Blackhawks D Seth Jones (thumb) out 3-4 weeks

The Chicago Blackhawks announced Sunday that defenseman Seth Jones had a right thumb injury that would keep him out for three to four weeks.

It was not immediately clear when or how Jones hurt the thumb. He appeared in the Blackhawks’ most recent game, a 4-3 overtime loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday, and skated for 24:08 of ice time.

Jones, 28, has recorded four assists over eight games to start his second season with the Blackhawks. Chicago traded for Jones ahead of the 2021-22 season and signed him to an eight-year, $76 million contract extension.

In 666 career games over parts of 10 seasons with the Nashville Predators (2013-16), Columbus Blue Jackets (2016-21) and Chicago, Jones has 341 points (70 goals, 271 assists) as well as 1,082 blocked shots and 340 takeaways. He was an NHL All-Star in the 2017-18 season.

NHL News: Capitals limp into matchup against Hurricanes

The Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes have something in common going into Monday night’s meeting at Raleigh, N.C.

Both teams are coming off road victories, but they weren’t achieved under ideal circumstances. The edge on Monday could go to the team that adjusts best to its situation.

Right winger T.J. Oshie and defenseman John Carlson exited early for the Capitals in their 3-0 triumph at Nashville on Saturday.

“They’re both lower-body (ailments) and we’re evaluating them,” Washington coach Peter Laviolette said.

The Hurricanes were far from smooth at Philadelphia on Saturday, yet they came out on top 4-3 in overtime.

“We can’t play like that and expect to be too successful,” Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour said.

Monday’s game brings Laviolette back to Raleigh. He was the coach of the Hurricanes in 2006, when they won the Stanley Cup with Brind’Amour as the captain.

Both teams had challenging road assignments across the opening couple of weeks of the season. Monday’s game completes a four-game road stretch for the Capitals.

The Hurricanes returned from an early Western Conference swing and played on back-to-back nights, losing at home to the New York Islanders on Friday before facing the Flyers. Brent Burns scored the winning goal Saturday night, another step in his acclimation to the Hurricanes.

“I think it has been an adjustment, but that’s what he does,” Brind’Amour said of Burns coming up big in clutch situations.

That could also be true of Hurricanes forward Martin Necas, who has been consistent to start the season. Brind’Amour said Necas might be considered Carolina’s best player to date with 11 points (five goals, six assists).

“Just try to be better at 5-on-5,” Necas said about his hot start. “Just be prepared for the season as much as possible. So far it has been good, but it’s only eight games in a season.”

If Necas continues to be a factor at this rate, it will open areas on the ice for the Hurricanes’ other skilled skaters.

“Every time he gets the puck, he looks like he’s going to get a scoring chance, or somebody else will,” Carolina goalie Antti Raanta said of Necas. “He looks really good, and he’s looked really good since training camp. It’s not a big surprise, but it’s nice for him to get those goals, assists and keep the confidence high.”

Washington’s past two games have involved shutouts. In addition to Saturday’s 3-0 victory, the Capitals were blanked 2-0 on Thursday on the road against the Dallas Stars.

“Everyone knew they had to step up,” Capitals forward Anthony Mantha said of the rebound game against the Predators.

The victory was particularly impressive after the Capitals overcame the loss of two of their key contributors.

“We’re well-rehearsed with this,” Laviolette said of injuries piling up in previous seasons. “We’ve had to fill holes in order to keep moving forward.”

Dealing with various degrees of adversity in the opening stretch of the season could be a bonus in the big picture for the Capitals.

“Everybody tried to play for each other,” defenseman Dmitry Orlov said. “Not easy games.”

Carolina could be in for a lineup change after forward Derek Stepan exited Saturday night’s game with an upper-body injury.

NHL News: Seven Devils find the net in rout of Blue Jackets

Seven different players scored a goal Sunday afternoon for the host New Jersey Devils, who rolled to a 7-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets in Newark, N.J.

Fabian Zetterlund scored in the first period and Nico Hischier and Ryan Graves scored 33 seconds apart early in the second to jump-start the rout for the Devils, who have won three straight and six of seven.

John Marino scored in the final minute of the second period before Jonas Siegenthaler, Jesper Bratt and Miles Wood each added a goal in the third period for New Jersey, which earned its most lopsided win since beating the Montreal Canadiens 7-1 on Feb. 8.

Jack Hughes had two assists and goalie Vitek Vanecek made 20 saves.

Yegor Chinakhov scored in the second period for the Blue Jackets, who have lost three straight and four of five. Goalie Elvis Merzlikins recorded 46 saves.

The Devils took a lead they’d never relinquish when Zetterlund scored on his second shot of a possession with 2:50 left in the first. Hischier scored an impressive unassisted goal after collecting the rebound of a shot by Chinakhov and weaving from right to left through the neutral zone before firing a shot beyond Merzlikins’ glove 3:22 into the second.

Graves quickly made it 3-0 by taking a pass from Hughes, who was being harassed at center ice by Andrew Peeke, and scoring from the left slot.

A Devils turnover led to Chinakhov’s goal at the 6:39 mark. But New Jersey began pouring it on with 22 seconds left, when Marino picked off Peeke’s pass intended for Johnny Gaudreau deep in the Blue Jackets’ zone and scored from the right faceoff circle.

Siegenthaler began the third-period flurry for the Devils by pouncing on a loose puck in the crease at 3:46. Hughes finished an end-to-end run by passing across the ice to Bratt, who fired a sizzling slapshot past a sprawling Merzlikins with 7:13 left. Wood capped the scoring exactly two minutes later.

NHL News: Report: Sabres put F Riley Sheahan on waivers

The Buffalo Sabres placed forward Riley Sheahan on waivers Sunday, Sportsnet reported.

Sheahan, 31, signed with Buffalo on Aug. 10 but has not appeared in any games this season.

He has 194 points (74 goals, 120 assists) in 635 career games with six NHL teams.

He scored 17 points (four goals, 13 assists) in 69 games with the expansion Seattle Kraken in 2021-22.

The Detroit Red Wings drafted Sheahan in the first round (21st overall) in 2010.

NHL News: ‘Struggling’ Blues set to face revived Kings

The St. Louis Blues will try to snap one of their worst slumps in recent years when they host the Los Angeles Kings on Monday.

The Blues have been dealt four consecutive regulation losses for the first time since Craig Berube took over as head coach during the 2018-19 season. Opponents have outscored the Blues 20-7 during the current downturn.

Meanwhile, the Kings earned an impressive 4-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs at home Saturday in advance of their trip to St. Louis. The Kings have won two of their past three games after a 3-4 start.

It leaves the Blues feeling urgency to clean up their game.

“It’s unacceptable to play like this,” Blues winger Vladimir Tarasenko said, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “We have some time before next game to figure it out.

“It has been a few rough games for us. Obviously losing sucks, but I’ve seen worse. … We’re confident in ourselves. The main thing is we should play better at home, and away games. We’re about to fix it, that’s it.”

The Blues at least got their offense going again during a 7-4 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday. Winger Jordan Kyrou scored a pair of goals to give him three on the season.

Pavel Buchnevich came off the injured reserve list to join Tarasenko and Robert Thomas on the top forward line. But the Blues had multiple defensive breakdowns while blowing a 3-1 lead.

“Obviously, we’re struggling right now,” defenseman Colton Parayko said. “A little adversity for our group, but what we got to do is we’ve got to fight through it. We got to stick with it, stick together as a group. That’s a good thing about our group is we’re going to stick together. We’re gonna work our way through it.”

Kings coach Todd McLellan has shuffled his forward lines by moving Gabriel Vilardi to the top group with Anze Kopitar and Adrian Kempe, while sliding Kevin Fiala down to the third line.

Fiala scored a goal and added an assist against the Maple Leafs while driving play for his trio.

“Kevin coming in has added a dimension,” McLellan said. “I thought him playing in the position he did tonight balanced things out a little bit more. He’s been able to create with workers and creative players in his career, so he did a real good job there.”

Vilardi has been on the top line after finally overcoming an earlier back injury and gaining his offensive touch. He has three goals and an assist in his past three games.

“I don’t think there’s a more confident guy around here,” Kopitar said. “Listen, it’s great to see. Obviously, he’s had a couple tough years, a couple uncertain years, so the fact that he’s gotten off to a start that he is, it’s great for us, it’s great for him and we’re gonna need him to compete.”

McLellan also gave forward Rasmus Kupari his first look this season. The team recalled him from Ontario of the American Hockey League on Saturday.

Blues winger Brandon Saad (upper-body injury) is questionable for Monday. He has missed the past four games.

NHL News: Stars’ Ty Dellandrea fined for goaltender interference

Dallas Stars forward Ty Dellandrea was fined $2,333.33 by the NHL on Sunday for goalie interference on Igor Shesterkin of the New York Rangers.

The fine is the maximum allowable under the league’s collective bargaining agreement.

Dellandrea skated through the crease and clipped the back of Shesterkin’s skate, knocking the reigning Vezina Trophy winner to the ice with 22 seconds remaining in the first period of Saturday’s game. Shesterkin was down on the ice for several moments before continuing to play in the game.

Dellandrea, 22, was whistled for a tripping penalty and a roughing penalty for his subsequent involvement with Artemi Panarin.

Dellandrea has three assists in nine games this season. He has eight points (three goals, five assists) in 36 career games since being selected by the Stars with the 13th overall pick of the 2018 NHL Draft.

NHL News: Big guns warming up for Red Wings, Sabres

The Buffalo Sabres and Detroit Red Wings have opened the season well despite slow starts from two of the game’s rising stars.

However, the Sabres’ Tage Thompson and Lucas Raymond of the Red Wings both look to build on a much-needed strong performance when the teams meet Monday night in Buffalo.

Thompson enjoyed a breakout campaign with 38 goals and 30 assists in 2021-22 but had just a goal and two assists in his first seven contests. He added to his total in 2022-23 by scoring twice in the third period — and adding an overtime assist — in Buffalo’s 4-3 comeback victory against Chicago on Saturday.

It was the Sabres’ fifth win in eight games to open this season.

“I think it was a matter of time,” Thompson said. “If you’re getting chances, I think that’s all you can ask for. If you’re getting chances, I think they’re bound to go in.”

Thompson has just two goals with an assist in seven career games against Detroit, which swept the four-game 2021-22 season series from the Sabres. Three of those contests were decided in overtime.

Meanwhile, the Red Wings avoided a third straight defeat with Saturday’s 2-1 home win over Minnesota.

Raymond scored his first two goals for Detroit after recording just two assists through his first seven contests of the season. It was a welcome relief for Raymond, whose 57 points (23 goals, 34 assists) as a rookie last season ranked third on the team, and led to high expectations for this one.

“My focus is playing the right way,” Raymond said. “I know that good things will happen.”

Raymond was a big reason for the Red Wings’ success over Buffalo last season, recording two goals and four assists during those four meetings.

“He’s a key guy for us,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “With his minutes, and how he plays, we need quality play out of him.”

Detroit, which has four wins — and the same 10 points as Buffalo — from its first eight games this season, will try to win back-to-back contests for the first time since opening with victories over Montreal and New Jersey. Ville Husso made 30 saves Saturday and is 3-1-1 with a 2.40 goals-against average to begin his Red Wings career.

However, Detroit backup Alex Nedeljkovic has allowed 12 goals in his first three contests this season.

With 23 saves on Saturday for Buffalo, veteran Craig Anderson has a 1.66 goals-against average and .946 save percentage while winning all three of his 2022-23 starts. Meanwhile, teammate Eric Comrie has a 3.41 GAA while losing three of his first five starts this season.

Sabres defenseman and budding star Rasmus Dahlin recorded an assist on Saturday to increase his team lead to 10 points. Dahlin has posted two goals and seven assists in 11 career games versus Detroit.

Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin added two assists Saturday, and also has 10 points on the season. He’s registered 12 goals and eight assists in 24 career contests against the Sabres.

NHL News: Blue Jackets recall G Joonas Korpisalo from AHL

The Columbus Blue Jackets recalled goaltender Joonas Korpisalo from his conditioning assignment in the American Hockey League on Sunday.

Korpisalo, 28, had hip surgery in March and was activated from the injured/non-roster list on Saturday.

He stopped 38 of 40 shots for the Cleveland Monsters in a 4-2 win against the Syracuse Crunch on Saturday night.

Korpisalo is 76-67-21 with a 3.04 goals-against average, a .902 save percentage and three shutouts in 182 games since making his NHL debut with the Blue Jackets in 2015-16.

Columbus entered Sunday’s road game against the New Jersey Devils in last place in the Metropolitan Division with just six points in nine games. Only the Los Angeles Kings (41) have allowed more goals than the Blue Jackets (37).

NHL News: More confident Rangers head to Coyotes’ new arena

During their first four-game losing streak under coach Gerard Gallant, the New York Rangers had little to show for an abundance of shots on goal, though they vowed the goals would eventually appear.

On Saturday, the Rangers finally produced the goals they were seeking and hope to continue their production Sunday night when they visit the Arizona Coyotes in their new, temporary arena in Tempe, Ariz.

In the prior four games, New York had taken two home defeats — one in overtime, one in a shootout — along with a 5-1 loss to the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets and a 3-0 loss to the host New York Islanders on Wednesday. During those games, the Rangers averaged 35.2 shots on goal, and produced 46 and 41 respectively in the final two games of the skid.

On Saturday afternoon, New York finished with 27 shots in a 6-3 victory at Dallas. In a game in which they produced their second-lowest amount of shots on the season, the Rangers scored two power-play goals and three in a span of 2:07 in the third period.

“We were in a little bit of a slide there,” New York’s Vincent Trocheck said. “Anytime you go into a little bit of a rut, it hurts your confidence a little bit. To come in here and get a win and see our team score six, it definitely boosts your confidence.”

Zac Jones scored the first goal of his career while Trocheck scored twice and produced a three-point showing. Mika Zibanejad, Chris Kreider and Julien Gauthier also scored for the Rangers, who posted at least six goals for the third time this season.

“We started seeing them go in,” Trocheck said. “Our power play was good tonight. We were getting a little bit tight, gripping our sticks a little too tight, just from a couple games not scoring. But we’ve been getting chances, and tonight we were able to capitalize on a couple.”

After going 2-4-0 on a season-opening six-game road trip, the Coyotes are playing their second game in the 5,000-seat Mullett Arena at Arizona State University. They are hoping to build a modest home-ice advantage after 4,600 fans attended their 3-2 overtime loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Friday.

“We’re going to pack it out, and have that kind of crowd buzzing, and hopefully put on some good games against some good teams that are coming here,” Arizona forward Christian Fischer said. “It’s going to be our home for three years here, maybe even four. I think the more we embrace it, it’s a tough place to play.”

Fischer scored the first Arizona goals in its new facility but the Coyotes were outshot 35-21 and failed to get the extra point when Blake Wheeler finished off a two-on-none 32 seconds into overtime for Winnipeg.

“We kind of got away from what made us successful in the third,” Arizona’s Clayton Keller said. “We played like we had the lead instead of pressuring them. We just started backing up, and then they’re flying through the neutral zone.”

The Rangers won both meetings between the clubs last season and are 11-1-2 in the past 14 meetings.
