ATP News: Carlos Alcaraz survives challenge, heads to Wimbledon 4th round

World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz fended off a stiff challenge from Nicolas Jarry of Chile to win their third-round match 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3, 7-5 on Saturday at Wimbledon.

Alcaraz, a 20-year-old Spaniard, was up two sets to one but down a break point with Jarry serving at 4-2. But Alcaraz, who had 14 break opportunities, turned the tide with in the seventh game of the four sets with a break, which got the set back on serve. He broke Jarry’s serve again in the 11th game — his fifth break of the match — to take a 6-5 lead and then serve for the match.

Alcaraz will meet unseeded Matteo Berrettini of Italy in the fourth round.

“It was really, really tough. Nico is a really good player and he played really well,” Alcaraz said of Jarry. “He deserves to be at the top and I am just really happy with the level I played.

“I had to stay focused. I knew that I would have my chances. It was really, really close. The key is to believe and stay focused the whole time.”

Alcaraz moved to 43-3 on the season with his win in the three-hour, 46-minute match. The 2022 U.S. Open champion, he is seeking his second Grand Slam title.

Also on a quest for a second major win is third-seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev, who lost the first set to Marton Fucsovics of Hungary but came back to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 on the grass courts in London.

Not known as grass-court master, Medvedev fought off early sloppiness to advance to the fourth round of Wimbledon for just the second time in six appearances. He did not compete in 2022 because of the tournament’s ban on players from Russia and Belarus.

“He’s a very tough player to play against and after the first set I was more decisive in some points and saved a couple of break points on my serve. I’m really happy to be through,” Medvedev said.

“I really want to do well here. I wasn’t playing here last year and it’s my worst Grand Slam in terms of results. I have a big motivation to change that. The further you go, the tougher the opponents. I hope that I can show my best tennis and enjoy.”

Medvedev’s fourth-round opponent will be Czech Jiri Lehecka, who advanced to the fourth round with a hard-fought 6-2, 7-6 (2), 6-7 (5), 6-7 (9), 6-2 victory against 16th-seeded Tommy Paul. It will be the first meeting between Medvedev and Lehecka.

Fifth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece sailed through the third round with a 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-4 win over Laslo Djere of Serbia, but No. 6 Holger Rune of Denmark was pushed to the limits by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain. Rune prevailed in nearly four hours with a 6-3, 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8) win.

Tsitsipas next will face American Christopher Eubanks, who needed three tiebreaks to eliminate Australian Christopher O’Connell 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2) victory.

Berrettini posted a 6-3, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5) victory over no. 19 seed Alexander Zverev from Germany to advance.

MLS News: Rapids, Timbers to conclude postponed match on Wednesday

0

The Colorado Rapids and Portland Timbers will resume their match, postponed from the Fourth of July, on Wednesday.

Inclement weather in Commerce City, Colo., forced the postponement at halftime with the match tied 0-0. It will restart at the 46th minute with the same players on the field and the same substitutes available as when the match was called.

The start of the match on Tuesday was delayed nearly two hours due to heavy rain.

Just minutes after the first half ended, another deluge began pounding Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The match was called approximately 80 minutes later at 11:42 p.m. local time.

Both teams had just one shot on target in the first half.

MLS News: NYCFC score late to salvage draw vs. Charlotte FC

0

Braian Cufre came to the rescue with an 81st-minute goal, giving New York City FC a 1-1 draw against visiting Charlotte FC on Wednesday night.

NYCFC (5-7-10, 25 points) dominated the possession and the chances throughout the match but needed Cufre’s goal to avoid a loss.

The result kept NYCFC unbeaten in the past seven outings (1-0-6).

McKinze Gaines scored in the 17th minute for Charlotte FC (6-8-7, 25 points), who failed to preserve that 1-0 lead and instead settled for a fourth straight draw. Charlotte is 0-2-4 since its last victory on May 27.

NYCFC held 58 percent of the possession and a massive 21-3 advantage in shots, though just five of their shots were on goal. Charlotte goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina made four saves, while New York City’s Luis Barraza had one save.

A very active first 12 minutes saw Talles Magno put two high-quality shots on target for New York City, but both were saved.

Charlotte star Karol Swiderski led an attack the other way and tried a pass across the box, but an NYCFC defender got a boot on it. The ball found its way to Gaines at the top of the box, and he rocketed a right-footed one-timer into the net for his first goal of the season.

Charlotte forward Enzo Copetti, who hit the post with a shot early in the game, limped off with an apparent leg injury in the 31st minute and was replaced by Justin Meram.

New York City FC got back at it in the second half. Keaton Parks lobbed a perfect pass to Magno, whose left-footed shot in the 56th minute was saved by Kahlina. On the ensuing counterattack, Charlotte’s Scott Arfield made a slippery move in the box to carry the ball in close, but he was knocked off-balance before getting off a proper shot.

Gabriel Pereira subbed in for Magno and announced himself quickly, hitting the woodwork with a shot in the 66th minute and missing two more attempts soon after.

NYCFC finally got on the board with time winding down after Parks found Cufre unmarked on the left side of the attacking third. Cufre’s left-footed shot glanced off the cleat of Charlotte defender Derrick Jones and past Kahlina, his second goal of the year.

The hosts were awarded a free kick just outside the box during second-half stoppage time, but Pereira poked his shot much too high.

NHL News: Longtime Kings star Anze Kopitar signs two-year, $14M extension

Los Angeles Kings captain Anze Kopitar signed a two-year, $14 million extension on Thursday.

Kopitar, a two-time Stanley Cup winner and five-time All-Star, is now under contract with the club through the 2025-26 season. The 17-year-veteran turns 36 in August.

“We’re pleased to have reached an agreement that will keep Anze in Los Angeles as our group takes the next step in competing for a Stanley Cup,” Kings general manager Rob Blake said in a news release. “He is the heart and soul of this team as our captain and he will continue to play a major role on our club.”

Kopitar had 28 goals and 74 points in 82 games last season while winning the Lady Byng Trophy (sportsmanship) for the second time in his career.

Last season was Kopitar’s most productive campaign since having 35 goals and 92 points in the 2017-18 season. That stellar campaign also marked the second time in three seasons that Kopitar won the Selke Award as the league’s top defensive forward.

“Los Angeles has become home for me and my family, and I’m excited to extend my career here,” Kopitar said. “I’ve been with this organization through it all and I know our group is close to achieving something special. I look forward to helping us reach that next level and achieving the ultimate goal of winning the Stanley Cup again.”

Kopitar was a big component when the Kings won the Stanley Cup in 2012 and 2014. He scored 20 points (eight goals, 12 assists) in 20 games during the 2012 postseason and 26 points (five goals, 21 assists) in 26 games during the 2014 playoffs.

Overall, Kopitar has 77 postseason points (24 goals, 53 assists) in 92 games.

In 1,292 regular-season games with the Kings, Kopitar has 393 goals and 748 assists for 1,141 points. He ranks second in franchise history in games played and assists, third in points and fourth in goals.

Kopitar made the All-Star team in 2008, 2011, 2015, 2018 and 2020. He has 12 seasons of 20 or more goals.
