Grizzlies meet Suns, aim to extend home win streak

After an unsuccessful four-game Western trek concluded with a loss at Golden State, the Memphis Grizzlies will host the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night, looking to extend their home winning streak to eight games.

Despite 36 points, eight assists and seven rebounds from Ja Morant in the 123-109 loss to the Warriors on Sunday, Memphis went 1-3 on its four-game trip and fell to 7-10 away from home.

The Grizzlies’ starters went 4-for-25 from 3-point range and failed to contain Golden State guards Jordan Poole, Klay Thompson and Donte DiVincenzo, who combined for 75 points with Stephen Curry out indefinitely with a shoulder injury.

Memphis is tied with Golden State for the best home record in the Western Conference at 13-2. The Grizzlies’ most recent defeat on their home court came against the Sacramento Kings, 113-109, on Nov. 22 — with Desmond Bane sidelined due to a toe injury and Morant coming off an ankle injury.

Since his return to the starting lineup in a 125-100 win over Phoenix on Friday after a 17-game absence, Bane is averaging 24 minutes per game along with 13 points and three rebounds.

The only game Memphis won on its latest trip was the blowout of the Suns. Bane was one of six Grizzlies to score in double figures vs. Phoenix.

“Real proud of what he’s done the last couple of weeks,” Memphis coach Taylor Jenkins said. “He’s progressed ahead of schedule.”

Morant has two triple-doubles in his past three home games and is averaging 26.8 points, 7.9 assists and 6.4 rebounds this season.

Dillon Brooks (17.8 ppg), Jaren Jackson (16.6 ppg, six rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game) and Steven Adams (10.3 rpg) round out a talented starting five that can score at will when they play well.

Phoenix has lost three straight games with leading scorer Devin Booker mostly sidelined with a groin injury.

The Suns almost slid past Denver on Christmas Day, but the Nuggets rallied for a 128-125 overtime victory behind Nikola Jokic, who had 41 points, 15 rebounds and 15 assists for the 83rd triple-double of his career.

Booker played four minutes and scored two points but exited early after he reinjured his groin.

Chris Paul had 17 points and 16 assists for the Suns. Deandre Ayton added 22 points and 16 rebounds.

Landry Shamet, who had 31 points and six assists in the loss to the Nuggets, has emerged as a legitimate weapon in the absence of Booker. Over his past four games, Shamet has averaged 22.5 points for a Phoenix team that’s lost eight of its past 11 games.

“We’ll be all right,” Shamet said. “The important thing is we’re doing the right things.”

NFL News: Broncos’ top 10 candidates to replace Nathaniel Hackett

The Denver Broncos helped the franchise get a head start on its search for its next head coach by laying a Christmas Day egg in a 51-14 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

Nathaniel Hackett’s future likely was sealed before the embarrassing loss to the reeling Super Bowl champions on national television. But the complete meltdown on the field and on the Broncos’ sideline on Sunday prompted CEO Greg Penner to make the move official on Monday with two games remaining in the team’s disastrous 4-11 season.

Who will take over the job now becomes the burning question.

The Broncos’ have one of the league’s elite defenses, despite what transpired against the Rams. The problem is the offense, which is led by a 34-year-old quarterback enduring by far his worst NFL season.

Denver sent a significant package of players and draft picks to the Seattle Seahawks to acquire Russell Wilson, then committed $245 million to him, but Wilson never looked comfortable in Hackett’s offense. So the immediate attention turns to who might be able to provide a better fit for Wilson and help the Broncos turn around what has devolved into the NFL’s lowest-scoring offense at 15.5 points per game.

Broncos’ Top 10 Coaching Candidates for 2023

1. Sean Payton, FOX Sports analyst and former Saints coach
The quick-twitch choice is Payton, who won a Super Bowl in New Orleans with a dynamic offense led by an undersized quarterback in Drew Brees.

Payton reportedly has assembled the majority of his staff with an eye on returning to the sideline next season. The big catch when it comes to Denver? Payton’s defensive coordinator pick is reportedly Vic Fangio, the Broncos’ former head coach who was fired after the 2021 season.

Payton is expected to be a leading candidate for several vacancies. The Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers already fired their head coaches and more openings are expected to follow as the regular season concludes.

2. DeMeco Ryans, 49ers defensive coordinator
The longtime NFL linebacker has established himself as one of the most respected coordinators in the league. Ryans replaced Robert Saleh, who took the New York Jets’ head coaching job in 2021, and San Francisco has clinched the NFC West title on the strength of the league’s top-rated defense.

Ryans would need to identify a strong offensive coordinator. He potentially could pluck from the 49ers’ staff to provide Wilson with a Kyle Shanahan-style scheme.

3. Shane Steichen, Eagles offensive coordinator
Philadelphia has the best record in the NFL thanks to what Denver is lacking — balance. In addition to the No. 2-ranked defense, the Eagles’ offense is led by MVP candidate Jalen Hurts.

Hurts is a dual threat, similar to what Wilson was in his earlier NFL years. Wilson has lost a step in his mid-30s, but perhaps Steichen can provide a scheme that better suits Wilson’s strengths and gets him on the move while getting the ball out quicker.

4. Kellen Moore, Cowboys offensive coordinator
Moore has been on the radar of NFL teams for the past few head coaching cycles. With defensive coordinator Dan Quinn another strong candidate to eventually take over for Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy, now might be the time for Moore to finally move into a head coaching role elsewhere.

5. Dan Quinn, Cowboys defensive coordinator
Quinn was strongly considered by the Broncos last offseason. Granted, the ownership group has changed since then and made the massive financial commitment to Wilson.

However, Quinn does have previous NFL head coaching experience with Atlanta, taking the Falcons to the Super Bowl, and would have a strong list of offensive coordinators to consider.

6. Eric Bienemy, Chiefs offensive coordinator
The annual Bienemy watch begins again. He has been on the short list for numerous teams the past few years, but has yet to land a head coaching job. That’s in part because many credit the Chiefs’ offensive prowess to coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Could the Broncos finally be willing to give the former Colorado Buffaloes standout his shot while also plucking a highly respected coach from a division rival?

7. Brian Callahan, Bengals offensive coordinator
The Bengals are making another strong playoff push coming off last year’s Super Bowl appearance. It certainly helps to have an offense led by quarterback Joe Burrow and a bevy of playmakers.

Callahan has been credited with getting the most out of that group, and Denver does have a potentially elite receiving corps that includes Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy.

8. Frank Reich, former Colts coach
On one hand, Reich’s downfall in Indianapolis was predicated by multiple failed experiments to get the Colts “over the top” with veteran quarterbacks who didn’t pan out. On the other, Reich once turned Carson Wentz into an NFL MVP candidate in Philadelphia.

Reich is highly respected in NFL circles and might be an excellent fit for Denver after learning from his first head coaching experience in Indy.

9. Ben Johnson, Lions offensive coordinator
The Lions pulled themselves off the mat and rallied into the playoff conversation thanks to their offense. While Detroit’s defense ranks last in the NFL in allowing an average of 26.7 points per game, the offense is fourth overall and fifth in points scored.

Johnson, 36, has been an NFL assistant since breaking in with the Miami Dolphins in 2012. After a decade in various roles in Miami and Detroit, he took over the Lions’ offense this year and the results have opened many eyes around the league.

10. Mike Kafka, Giants offensive coordinator
Another first-year coordinator, Kafka was given the keys to the playcalling shortly before the season started under the tutelage of Giants coach Brian Daboll. A former journeyman NFL quarterback, Kafka has helped unlock Daniel Jones’ potential in New York and could be seen by Broncos management as the type of sparkplug Wilson needs.

One potentially significant drawback is that at 35, Kafka is only 16 months older than Wilson.

Reports: 76ers G Tyrese Maxey to return Friday

Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey is expected to return from a foot injury on Friday against the New Orleans Pelicans, multiple outlets reported Monday.

Maxey has been sidelined since Nov. 18. He’ll likely be on a minutes restriction against the Pelicans, per the reports.

Maxey, 22, was averaging 22.9 points per game to go with 4.4 assists and 3.5 rebounds in 15 starts prior to suffering the injury.

He sustained a small fracture in his left foot during a game against Milwaukee on Nov. 18 after landing awkwardly.

Sunday was Maxey’s 17th game missed.

NFL News: With surgery for CB Jaycee Horn, Josh Norman works out for Panthers

Carolina Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn is scheduled to undergo wrist surgery on Tuesday, leading the team to work out a familiar face to potentially fill his roster spot: Josh Norman.

Interim coach Steve Wilks said Monday that how long Horn, 23, will be out will be determined post-surgery. Horn injured his left wrist in the fourth quarter of the Panthers’ 37-23 win over the Detroit Lions on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the team confirmed that Norman — a former All-Pro with the Panthers — was at the team’s facility on Monday. Wilks said, depending on the workout, Norman could be added to the team in time to play Sunday in a crucial NFC South road game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Norman, 35, played the 2021 season with the San Francisco 49ers. He started 14 games and forced a career-high seven fumbles.

Carolina selected Norman in the fifth round of the 2012 NFL Draft and he spent four seasons with the Panthers, being named All-Pro in 2015. He signed a free agent deal with the Washington franchise in 2016, and followed his four seasons there with one season with the Buffalo Bills in 2020.

In 135 career games (109 starts), Norman has 489 tackles (13 for loss), 16 interceptions, 88 pass breakups, 20 forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries.

Horn, a first-round draft pick in 2021, missed all but three games of his rookie season due to injury. In 13 games (all starts) this season, Horn has recorded 53 tackles with three interceptions and seven passes defensed.

The Panthers (6-9) trail the Buccaneers (7-8) for the NFC South title, but a win Sunday would put them in the driver’s seat. The Panthers beat the Buccaneers 21-3 on Oct. 23 and would move into first place in the division, having won the season series.

Carolina ends the season on Jan. 8 on the road against the New Orleans Saints, while the Bucs visit the Atlanta Falcons.

With their surge up to 8 games, Sixers visit Wizards

The Philadelphia 76ers will look to continue their winning ways — and get a valuable player back in the process — on Tuesday night when they visit the Washington Wizards.

The 76ers are riding high after extending their winning streak to eight games with a 119-112 victory over the Knicks in New York on Sunday.

Philadelphia received quite the Christmas gift after overcoming a double-digit deficit in the first half for the second straight game. The 76ers trailed by 20 points in the first half on Friday before storming back for a 119-114 home win over the Los Angeles Clippers.

“Being down didn’t faze the group,” Philadelphia coach Doc Rivers said. “They have an inner confidence, and that’s good thing for your team.”

What’s also good for your team is having Joel Embiid and James Harden playing like elite talents. In Sunday’s opener of a four-game trip, Embiid had 35 points and eight rebounds, while Harden contributed 29 points, 13 assists and four steals.

Harden joined De’Anthony Melton in making five 3-pointers, and Georges Niang knocked down four for the 76ers, who shot a robust 46.2 percent from beyond the arc (18 of 39) against the Knicks.

Philadelphia also is looking forward to the return of Tyrese Maxey on Tuesday. Rivers said the 22-year-old was close to coming back from his left-foot fracture on Friday, and he accompanied the team to New York on Sunday.

Multiple reports on Monday indicated Maxey indeed would return after missing 17 games because of the injury he sustained against the Milwaukee Bucks on Nov. 18. He is averaging 22.9 points, 4.4 assists and 3.5 rebounds in 15 games.

“We’re going to add Tyrese back into the equation,” Harden said. “He’s a huge part of what we want to do. It won’t be that hard. There’s a lot of questions, but it’s good questions to have, good problems to have.”

Maxey scored 28 and 32 points, respectively, as Philadelphia split a home-and-home series with Washington on Oct. 31 and Nov. 2.

Wizards star Kristaps Porzingis scored 32 points against the 76ers in a 118-111 home loss in the first contest. He followed that with 30 in the 121-111 victory in Philadelphia in the rematch.

Porzingis struggled mightily with his shot in Washington’s last game, however. He made just 2 of 11 attempts from the floor and misfired on all three of his shots from beyond the arc in the Wizards’ 125-111 victory over the Kings in Sacramento on Friday.

Kyle Kuzma more than picked up the slack, making 14 of 23 shots from the floor to finish with 32 points. He added nine rebounds and five assists, marking his fourth game of his career — and second of the season — in which he collected at least 30 points, five boards and five assists.

“I just put my hard hat on every night,” Kuzma said. “I come ready to play. I’ve got something to prove to myself every single night. I’m ready and I’m available for my teammates. I have the same mentality every night.”

Bradley Beal finished with 24 points, marking the 15th time in his last 16 games played that he has scored at least 20.

The Wizards could welcome back Deni Avdija and Will Barton on Tuesday. Both players are dealing with lower-back soreness.

The 76ers on Monday signed forward Louis King to a two-way contract and waived guard Saben Lee. King was averaging 20.1 points and 4.4 rebounds a game in the G-League while Lee played in two games for the Sixers, averaging 3 points.

NFL News: Broncos’ Randy Gregory, Rams’ Oday Aboushi suspended for fight

The NFL on Monday suspended Broncos defensive end Randy Gregory and Rams offensive lineman Oday Aboushi one game each without pay following their postgame fight Sunday in Inglewood, Calif.

Video replays showed Gregory, who took the first swing, and Aboushi exchanging punches immediately after Los Angeles wrapped up a 51-14 victory against Denver. Both players were still wearing their helmets at the time and neither appeared to get hurt.

The NFL punished them for violating league rules on unsportsmanlike conduct and unnecessary roughness.

Gregory, 30, is in his first season with the Broncos after playing parts of five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. He missed the entire 2017 and 2019 seasons while serving suspensions for violations of the league’s substance abuse policy.

Aboushi, 31, is in his first season with the Rams following stints with the New York Jets (2014), Houston Texans (2015-16), Seattle Seahawks (2017), Arizona Cardinals (2018), Detroit Lions (2019-20) and Los Angeles Chargers (2021).

LeBron James, Lakers look to slow down Magic

Two teams trending in opposite directions will meet when the Orlando Magic host the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night.

While Orlando has won eight of its last nine, Los Angeles has lost four in a row. The Lakers began a five-game trip with a 124-115 loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday.

After taking a nine-point lead into halftime, Los Angeles was outscored 51-21 during a disastrous third quarter.

“We have to know that it’s a 48-minute game; it’s not a 24-minute game,” Los Angeles coach Darvin Ham said. “We kind of took our foot off the pedal defensively. To give up a 51-point third quarter is just unacceptable. It’s completely unacceptable. That’s not who we are. That’s not who we’re going to be.”

Lakers star LeBron James scored 38 points in the loss. His seven-game streak of at least 30 points is the longest active streak in the league.

Los Angeles is being forced to rely on James minus center Anthony Davis, who is out indefinitely with a stress injury in his right foot.

The Lakers are 1-4 since Davis’ injury and have allowed at least 124 points in all four losses.

James likely will need another big showing against Orlando, which opened a brief two-game homestand with a 133-113 win over the San Antonio Spurs on Friday.

Third-year point guard Cole Anthony continued to impress, with 23 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists against the Spurs.

“Obviously, he was flirting on the triple-double, but the one thing I love the most is he didn’t chase a stat,” Magic coach Jamahl Mosley said. “He respected the game and just went after what we needed to win.”

Franz Wagner added 21 points, while rookie Paolo Banchero had 18 points and six rebounds.

Orlando also received a spark from center Wendell Carter Jr. and guard Gary Harris.

Carter returned after missing 18 games due to plantar fascia. He tallied eight points and four rebounds in 19 minutes and is eager to contribute to a team on the upswing.

“The sky is the limit for this team,” Carter said. “I’m just excited to be part of it.”

Harris had nine points in 21 minutes against San Antonio after missing 11 games with a right-hamstring strain.

Orlando’s formidable front line of Bol Bol, Moritz Wagner, Mo Bamba and Carter could create problems for Los Angeles, which lacks a consistent inside presence without Davis.

Center Thomas Bryant is averaging 10.8 points and 5.4 rebounds in 13 games this month, but James clearly needs more help from teammates. At 13-20, the Lakers are looking to avoid their third five-game losing streak of the season.

Ham said James’ leadership is keeping the team afloat. The four-time MVP is averaging 27.8 points, 8.1 rebounds and 6.6 assists in 36 minutes per game.

“My hat’s off to him,” Ham said. “It’s tough times right now, tough circumstances. But at the end of the day, you know, we just have to keep mashing forward. He’s the prime example of that. Just his ability to come out game after game after game and put up the type of performances he’s putting up.”

NFL News: QB Mike White to start for Jets against Seattle

New York Jets quarterback Mike White, who missed the past two games with a rib injury, has been cleared to return and will start Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks, head coach Robert Saleh said Monday.

Joe Flacco will be White’s backup and Zach Wilson will be inactive.

White hasn’t played since sustaining the injury in a 20-12 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Dec. 11.

In White’s absence, the Jets returned to Wilson in the past two games, the starter most of the season who was benched following a 10-3 loss to the New England Patriots on Nov. 20. He was incessantly booed by the home crowd on Thursday as the Jets lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars, 19-3.

Against Jacksonville, he was 9-of-18 passing for 92 yards and an interception. He also lost the Week 15 game against the Detroit Lions, 20-17.

On the season, the 27-year-old White is 1-2 as a starter. He has completed 62.0 percent of his passes for 952 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Wilson, 23, is 5-3 in the starting role this season and has completed 54.5 percent of his passes. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, he has thrown for 1,688 yards with six touchdowns and seven interceptions.

The Jets (7-8) remain in the AFC playoff hunt. After playing at Seattle, they close the season on Jan. 8 on the road against the Miami Dolphins, who also are fighting for a wild-card playoff berth.

James Harden Next Team Odds: Rockets return favored

James Harden has been a driving force behind Philadelphia’s eight-game winning streak that has elevated the 76ers into the thick of the race at the top of the Eastern Conference.

But could the former NBA Most Valuable Player be eyeing yet another exit strategy?

A Christmas Day report by ESPN indicated that Harden could be considering a return to Houston less than two years after forcing a trade from the Rockets.

After a tumultuous stint with Brooklyn, Harden was dealt to Philadelphia last year. He signed a two-year, $68.6 million contract and has teamed with star center Joel Embiid for a formidable one-two punch for the 76ers (20-12).

However, the report said that the 33-year-old Harden could opt out of the final year of his contract depending on how the rest of this season plays out.

That spurred SportsBetting.ag to install odds on Harden’s next team — if he leaves Philadelphia. The sportsbook is offering -180 odds that he’s on the 76ers’ roster to begin next season compared to +140 odds that he’s playing for any other NBA team.

James Harden Next Team Odds*
Houston Rockets (2-1)
Miami Heat (5-1)
Boston Celtics (7-1)
Dallas Mavericks (7-1)
Los Angeles Lakers (8-1)
New York Knicks (8-1)
Chicago Bulls (9-1)
Los Angeles Clippers (10-1)
San Antonio Spurs (10-1)
Atlanta Hawks (12-1)
Denver Nuggets (12-1)
*If not with Philadelphia

Even though he wanted to leave Houston from a basketball standpoint, ESPN said Harden favors the city’s lifestyle and has family there and, as he gets older, might put community over desire to compete for a title right away.

Harden began his career with the Oklahoma City Thunder, who selected him No. 3 overall in the 2009 NBA Draft. He was the centerpiece of an Oct. 27, 2012, trade that sent him to Houston.

He spent eight-plus seasons with the Rockets, leading them to the playoffs each year, twice advancing to — and losing — the Western Conference final. He won three straight NBA scoring titles and was the MVP in 2017-18, but he grew disenchanted, and the Rockets traded him to the Nets as part of a blockbuster, four-team trade on Jan. 13, 2021.

He never meshed with fellow stars Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant in Brooklyn and was traded to the Sixers in February in a mega deal that saw Philadelphia part with Ben Simmons, Seth Curry, Andre Drummond and two future first-round picks for Harden and Paul Millsap.

This season, Harden is averaging 21.6 points, 6.4 rebounds and 11.1 assists per game.

NFL News: Chargers at Colts: MNF Preview, Prop Picks, Prediction

The Los Angeles Chargers roll into Indianapolis for Monday Night Football knowing a victory clinches a playoff spot.

The Chargers (8-6) are riding a two-game winning streak and face a reeling Colts team coming off an historic 33-point collapse against Minnesota. The Colts (4-9-1) are without star running back Jonathan Taylor for the remainder of the season and are turning to Nick Foles, who will be their third starting quarterback this year.

Indianapolis has lost four consecutive games following an opening win for interim coach Jeff Saturday and has been eliminated from playoff contention.

The Chargers opened as 4.5-point favorites at BetMGM, but the line has moved to 3.0 with the Colts drawing 81 percent of the spread-line action. The 4.0-point line at DraftKings has seen the Chargers backed by 77 percent of the spread bets and 67 percent of the handle.

“Indianapolis was up 33-0 last week in an NFL game,” Chargers coach Brandon Staley said. “That’s very difficult to do. The reason why they were is because they have a lot of good players and they have a lot of good coaches.”

PROP PICKS
Chargers RB Austin Ekeler Anytime TD (+450 at DraftKings): Ekeler has been the most popular prop play at both sportsbooks for good reason. He has 14 total touchdowns on the season, including at least one in nine of his past 11 games. His odds to score Monday night have a slightly smaller payout at BetMGM (+400). The Colts are allowing 123.7 yards per game on the ground and enter the game 25th in the NFL in giving up an average of 24.1 points.

Colts WR Parris Campbell Under 38.5 Receiving Yards (-115 at BetMGM): This has been the third most popular player prop at the sportsbook. Campbell has topped this mark in seven of his 14 games this season but is averaging only 4.3 targets over his past four games. What his role in the passing game is with Foles under center remains to be seen, but he’s fighting for targets behind Michael Pittman along with rookie Alec Pierce.

Over 44.5 Total Points (-100 at BetMGM/DraftKings): The total has been shifting downward all week, opening at 47.5 points at BetMGM, where 57 percent of the bets and 61 percent of the money has backed the Under. The action has been more split at DraftKings with the money 50/50 and the Over drawing 56 percent of the bets. The Chargers enter 21st in total defense and are just below the Colts in points allowed per game at 24.3.

INJURY REPORT
Chargers: S Derwin James (quad) is expected to return after missing the past two games, but DE Joey Bosa (groin) does not appear ready yet. DB Kemon Hall (hamstring) is officially out.

Colts: Taylor (ankle) is out along with CB Kenny Moore II (leg) and TE Kylen Granson (ankle). CB Brandon Facyson (illness) and WR Mike Strachan (concussion) are slated to play.

PREDICTION
Foles is accustomed to the relief role, having guided Philadelphia to a Super Bowl title after replacing an injured Carson Wentz in Week 14 in 2017. He could provide a steadying influence to the Colts’ lackluster offense, but he can’t fix the offensive line or running game woes. The Chargers are peaking at the right time and will be highly motivated to lock up a playoff spot before the New Year. — Chargers 27, Colts 20
