MLS News: Crew, Fire rue dropped points ahead of key meeting

0

Points, more specifically lost points, are crucial in the home stretch of the MLS season, which makes the match between the Chicago Fire and the host Columbus Crew on Wednesday magnified.

The Crew (13-9-6, 45 points) sit fifth in the Eastern Conference, one spot below securing home field for the playoffs. But they squandered a late two-goal lead and lost 4-3 in stoppage time at Orlando City on Saturday to prevent them from moving into second place.

“We are going to move forward,” Crew coach Wilfried Nancy said. “I’m happy that we’re going to be able to play Wednesday with a quick turnaround. This is the best thing for us. Not only Wednesday but also all the games that are coming because we need to move on. We need to move forward and to be better in terms of this kind of situation.”

Each team has six matches remaining, but the Fire (8-11-9, 33 points) are in a more perilous position after a 0-0 tie at CF Montreal on Saturday. Chicago is 10th in the East, two points behind D.C. United for the final postseason spot.

The Fire had lost four straight before the draw. They also have one goal during the five-game stretch and have been blanked in each of their past four matches.

“Look, we’re a good team, we’re in a little bit of a downslide and we’ve got to find our way and show our character to get out of this. We’re still in it,” Fire coach Frank Klopas said. “It’s always going to be a battle in the end. That’s how it always is in MLS and the parity within the league but it’s getting pretty tight right now and every game that we play is a playoff game. We can’t hide from that. You can’t sugarcoat that.”

The Crew lead MLS in goals per game (2.04) but will be going against 19-year-old goalkeeper Chris Brady. He made four saves vs. Montreal for his seventh shutout of the season.

“When you look at goalkeepers, the one thing you look from the outside is a presence. He really has a presence. He’s growing,” Klopas said. “He’s really young but he’s really maturing.”

Cucho Hernandez leads Columbus with 10 goals and 11 assists. He had one of each in the Orlando match. Kei Kamara has a team-high five goals for Chicago.

MLS News: After physical match, Union turn attention to Charlotte FC

0

The Philadelphia Union are trying to get into a winning mindset with the postseason fast approaching.

Philadelphia visits Charlotte FC, which is in desperate mode to get into playoff position, on Wednesday night.

Philadelphia (14-8-5, 47 points) tied 2-2 with Eastern Conference-leading FC Cincinnati on Saturday after the Union led 2-0 at halftime.

“We’re only happy in this building when we get three points,” Union coach Jim Curtin said.

Curtin said the emphasis is to put more pressure on the three teams ahead of Philadelphia in the standings.

But after a physical match that included 12 yellow cards in the Cincinnati match, composure is bound to be among Curtin’s message. Philadelphia’s Jack Elliott was issued a red card after his second yellow.

The Union, who have won two of their last three road matches, will have to regenerate a form of the energy that was on display against Cincinnati.

Charlotte (7-9-11, 32 points) has had three consecutive draws, including Saturday night’s 0-0 outcome at home against D.C. United.

“It’s up to us to take what we deserve,” Charlotte coach Christian Lattanzio said. “Nobody is going to give us a gift. … We need to win games. In the last four games, we should have had 12 points.”

Charlotte has produced a total of two goals across its past three matches, and it has eclipsed the one-goal mark just once in its last five matches.

“We had many chances to create more,” Lattanzio said. “We had more than enough possessions, more than enough entries.”

Lattanzio said he’s seeking the best combinations and he’s willing to adjust roles as necessary.

The Union have excelled at times at the offensive end, totaling 10 goals across its past four matches. They might encounter a more assertive resistance in the Charlotte net as goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina seems to be taking a slightly different approach.

“This is what I like,” Lattanzio said. “His aggressiveness in taking strategic positions is vital.”

The Union defeated Charlotte 1-0 on May 31 when Kahlina was charged with an own goal in the 71st minute.

Philadelphia has won five road matches this year. Charlotte has only four home victories.

MLS News: Revolution hire Hall of Famer Tab Ramos as assistant coach

0

The New England Revolution hired National Soccer Hall of Fame member Tab Ramos as an assistant coach on Tuesday.

Ramos is being added to the technical staff after the Revolution restructured their coaching staff in the wake of Bruce Arena’s resignation earlier this month.

Ramos, 56, is a Uruguayan-born American who played professionally in Spain, Mexico and the North American Soccer League. He had 81 appearances for the U.S. men’s national team and scored eight goals before spending 2009-16 as an assistant in the U.S. Soccer program.

He was the head coach of the U.S. under-20 national team from 2011-19 and the Houston Dynamo from 2020-21. He most recently coached the USL’s Hartford Athletic, who let him go in July.

“In addition to a Hall of Fame career as one of the best players of his generation, Tab’s wealth of experience as a coach, knowledge of our league and proven track record of developing top talent will all be assets to our club as we get ready for the postseason,” Revolution technical director and interim sporting director Curt Onalfo said in a news release.

Ramos will report to interim head coach Clint Peay, who was promoted to that role Sept. 12 after Revolution players reportedly refused to practice for then-interim coach Richie Williams.

Arena resigned Sept. 9 in the wake of a six-week investigation into allegations that he used “inappropriate and insensitive” remarks with the team. The Athletic reported that Williams himself filed complaints about Arena during the investigation, and reports said players became dissatisfied with the lack of information they were given about Arena’s ouster.

Two assistant coaches were also let go on Sept. 12 — Dave van den Bergh and Shalrie Joseph, who reportedly supported Arena. The Revolution promoted Marcelo Santos, an assistant coach of New England’s MLS NEXT Pro development club, Revolution II, to Peay’s staff.

MLS News: MLS boots player who reportedly used fake name

0

Major League Soccer terminated the contract of CF Montreal midfielder Matko Miljevic on Monday.

The 22-year-old American used an alias to compete in a Quebec amateur league and punched an opponent there in the face, according to multiple reports.

MLS said in a brief release that Miljevic “engaged in conduct detrimental to the league and (violated) his standard player agreement.”

Miljevic made his MLS debut with Montreal in 2021 and appeared in 35 league matches (eight starts), contributing two goals and two assists.

He made eight appearances this season as a substitute, playing just 124 minutes.

Montreal announced in mid-February that Miljevic would be sidelined 8-12 weeks following surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.

Boston College suspends swimming, diving programs due to hazing

0

Boston College suspended its men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs indefinitely after the university determined hazing incidents “occured within the program.”

Details about the hazing allegations, the severity or any specific incidents involving the team were not disclosed.

Members of the program will continue to receive academic and medical resources available to all Boston College student-athletes, the university said.

“The University does not — and will not — tolerate hazing in any form,” Boston College said in a release Wednesday.

The men’s and women’s teams were both last in the Atlantic Coast Conference last season. The first event on the schedule listed on the athletics website was an intrasquad meet Saturday. The first competitive meet listed is Oct. 7 against host George Washington in Washington, D.C.

“Consistent with university policy, the matter will be investigated by the Office of the Dean of Students and adjudicated fairly and impartially through the student conduct process,” the university said.

No coaches or athletes are named and athletic department officials offered no further comment.

Swimming and diving head coach Joe Brinkman was hired prior to last season. As a collegiate swimmer, he twice earned nominations for the NAIA Champion of Character award and received the Mid-South Conference Champion of Character award.

Prior to his hire in August 2022, Brinkman spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Notre Dame.

PGA News: Former U.S. Open champ Gary Woodland recovering from brain surgery

0

Gary Woodland, a PGA Tour veteran and U.S. Open champion, is recovering after a “long surgery” to remove a brain tumor on Monday, according to a statement posted to Woodland’s social media accounts.

The statement said a majority of the tumor had been removed and Woodland is now resting following the procedure.

“At this time, the family requests space and privacy to be together,” the statement said. “Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers as he gets started on the road to recovery.”

Woodland, 39, announced last month that a lesion had been discovered on his brain and the decision became the best course of action after trying to treat his symptoms with medication.

Woodland has won four times on the PGA Tour, scoring his biggest victory at the 2019 U.S. Open with a three-shot win over Brooks Koepka.

It is not yet known when Woodland will be able to return to the golf course.

NCAAF News: Baylor QB Blake Shapen not ready; Sawyer Robertson starts vs. Texas

Blake Shapen needs at least another week before he’s cleared to return as Baylor’s starting quarterback.

Head coach Dave Aranda said Monday that the Bears anticipate Sawyer Robertson in the starting lineup when Baylor hosts No. 3 Texas on Saturday.

The Mississippi State transfer was intercepted deep in Baylor territory in a 13-all game with Utah that gave the Utes the field position needed for a game-winning touchdown on Sept. 9.

Aranda previously cited Robertson’s “contagious spirit” teammates respond to knowing “with him, we’ve got a great chance.”

Shapen suffered a knee injury in the Bears’ season-opening loss to Texas State, 42-31. Baylor beat Long Island 30-7 last week to improve to 1-2.

Texas (3-0) opens Big 12 play in Waco on Saturday following a 31-10 over Wyoming.

NCAAF News: Notre Dame clears three starters to play vs. Ohio State

Linebacker and captain JD Bertrand, safety DJ Brown and tight end Mitchell Evans were cleared to return from injury ahead of No. 9 Notre Dame’s top-10 showdown against No. 6 Ohio State, Fighting Irish coach Marcus Freeman said Monday.

Bertrand was in concussion protocol and missed Saturday’s win over Central Michigan. A Notre Dame captain for the second time, Bertrand has 203 career tackles and 3.5 sacks.

Brown sat out the Central Michigan game with a hamstring injury. He had an interception two weeks ago in a win over NC State.

Evans was also in concussion protocol for the Central Michigan game after playing in the first three games of the season.

Freeman also said tight end Eli Raridon (knee) will remain out this week.

Notre Dame (4-0) will welcome Ohio State (3-0) to South Bend, Ind., for a rematch of last year’s game in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes beat the Irish 21-10 in both teams’ season opener in 2022.

NCAAF News: NC State QB heads ‘home’ to face hungry Virginia

North Carolina State quarterback Brennan Armstrong will be in a special place in the team’s Atlantic Coast Conference opener Friday night.

He will be back in Charlottesville, Va., where he played the last five seasons for Virginia.

Armstrong has shown few signs of peeking ahead. But now it’s game week for his return.

“I haven’t looked at what other people are doing,” Armstrong said. “We’ll start to figure out what they do. I’m taking it game by game. We’ll figure out what this next defense likes to do and be able to adapt.”

Armstrong started 30 games for Virginia the past three seasons.

This year, he still appears to be in adjustment mode with NC State (2-1), though he was 27 for 32 with a touchdown in Saturday’s 45-7 home trouncing of Virginia Military Institute.

“This was a great game for us to bounce back,” Armstrong said.

Virginia (0-3) needs something good to happen, though there were stretches of positives the past two weeks. But the Cavaliers couldn’t hold leads against James Madison or Maryland.

“We got to go make the plays,” Virginia coach Tony Elliott said. “We can’t wait for somebody else to make the play. We can’t hope that the team across the field doesn’t make the play. We have to go make the play.”

It will be Virginia’s second consecutive Friday night game after a 42-14 loss at Maryland.

The Cavaliers seem less clear at quarterback since Armstrong’s departure. Tony Muskett began the season as the starter, but an injury resulted in Anthony Colandrea taking that role.

Muskett practiced last week, but he was given at least another week for his non-throwing shoulder to heal.

“I have full confidence in the offense,” Cavaliers safety Jonas Sanker said. “I know what they’re capable of, so there’s never any doubt.”

Virginia’s Malik Washington, a transfer from Northwestern, caught nine passes for a career-high 141 yards in the Maryland game.

NC State and Virginia haven’t met since the 2020 readjusted schedule, with the Wolfpack winning 38-21 at Charlottesville. Armstrong played in a starting, but limited role that day, throwing two interceptions among his nine passes and absorbing three sacks.

NCAAF News: Illinois QB to ‘swallow the frog,’ face FAU

Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer was benched after throwing four interceptions during Saturday’s home loss to No. 7 Penn State, but offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. is “certainly confident” Altmyer can regroup.

“You process it,” Lunney Jr. said. “You go in and swallow the frog. You have to eat it, watch it, learn from it.”

Altmyer and the Fighting Illini (1-2) look to end a two-game skid when they host Florida Atlantic this week.

The Owls bring plenty of speed and perimeter athletic ability to Champaign. The personnel presents a challenge to an Illinois defense that has lost defensive backs Matt Bailey (shoulder) and Demetrius Hill (torn ACL) to season-ending injuries.

“Offensively, the big question will be how Luke comes back and responds. I called him on Saturday,” Fighting Illini head coach Bret Bielema said. “Let him know where I was at, how he was feeling. Sunday was a tough day for everybody, I like the demeanor we were in Sunday.”

Illinois had five turnovers against Penn State, but a disciplined defense that committed zero penalties helped the team stick around for a portion of the game.

Illinois defensive coordinator Aaron Henry lauded the efforts of defensive lineman Johnny Newton, who had six tackles, including one for a loss, while staying disruptive at the line of scrimmage.

“As he continues to play that way,” Henry said, “we have a chance to win every football game.”

Florida Atlantic (1-2) also tries to rebound as it visits a Power Five opponent for the second week in a row. The Owls fell behind 34-0 at halftime of their Sept. 17 game at Clemson on the way to a 48-14 defeat and lost quarterback Casey Thompson to a season-ending knee injury.

“I know the scoreboard is awful and the way we looked for a lot of the first half was awful, and our guys responded for the most part,” Owls coach Tom Herman said.

“We are going to really do a good job of accentuating and promoting the guys that upheld our standard and our culture regardless of the scoreboard and also make sure we point out the guys that did not.”

Wide receiver LaJohntay Wester would figure to belong in the former category after contributing 12 receptions for 108 yards. A junior, Wester recorded his first career game of at least 10 catches while becoming the program’s all-time receptions leader with 163.

Owls linebacker Jackson Ambush had a game-high eight tackles.

Saturday marks the first meeting between Illinois and Florida Atlantic.
