Storm G Jewell Loyd’s status unknown after ankle injury

WNBA leading scorer Jewell Loyd left Seattle’s game against the New York Liberty on Saturday afternoon with an ankle injury and her status for this week and the All-Star Game is now in question.

Loyd exited the game with 7:01 left in the game when she rolled her ankle and collapsed in a heap. She had 14 points in the game, won by the Liberty, and did not return.

“It’s too early to determine what the prognosis is,” Seattle coach Noelle Quinn said after the game.

Seattle has games at Washington and Atlanta this week and the All-Star Game is next Saturday in Las Vegas.

Loyd is averaging 24.9 points per game on the season.

Sparks look to get well against league-worst Mercury

Someone has to get well on Sunday.

Two struggling teams play in Phoenix when the Mercury and their WNBA-worst 3-14 record host the Los Angeles Sparks and their 7-11 mark.

The difference between the teams, besides 3 1/2 games in the standings, is that Los Angeles has a first-year coach in Curt Miller who has a hall pass for these struggles. His team has been playing without three and four starters at times during their recent skid.

“It doesn’t matter if you have eight players, nine players,” he said. “We’ve got to play hard and try to create the foundation and a culture that we want to rely on years from now.”

That’s why Miller went out of his way to praise his team’s effort after Wednesday night’s 90-79 home loss to Atlanta. The Sparks trailed by 21 at one point in the fourth quarter before closing within 12 at the 5:38 mark.

Nneka Ogwumike scored 19 points and added 10 rebounds to lead Los Angeles; she’s averaging 19.8 points and 9.2 boards.

Meanwhile, Phoenix got off to a slow start in a 75-64 loss Thursday night at Minnesota. The Mercury trailed 23-10 after one quarter and then saw the margin swell to 24 early in the third quarter. That was enough to decide the game.

“We are in a tough position and we are pretty banged up with a couple of different circumstances going on,” said Phoenix interim coach Nikki Blue. “It is going to take patience — play by play, minute by minute, game by game.”

Blue is 1-4 since replacing Vanessa Nygaard, who was fired on June 25 after a blowout loss at Seattle. The Mercury have been without their top three players — Brittney Griner, Diana Taurasi and Skylar Diggins-Smith — at various points this season.

Despite missing last season due to being jailed in Russia, Griner is averaging 19.3 points and 6.3 rebounds. She will play in next weekend’s All-Star Game.

The Sparks have won both previous meetings between the teams this season, averaging 96.5 points.

Dream eye back-to-back road wins over Sky

If the Atlanta Dream are to record their first five-game winning streak in five seasons, they’ll need to beat the Chicago Sky for a second time in 48 hours.

The Dream look to stay hot when they play a second consecutive contest at Chicago on Sunday night.

The Dream (9-8) passed the first part of that test by outscoring the Sky 23-10 in the fourth quarter for an 82-68 victory on Friday.

All-Star Allisha Gray led the way with 21 points. Rhyne Howard scored 17 and ex-Sky Cheyenne Parker added 14 with 10 rebounds for Atlanta, which shot 47.8 percent, enjoyed a 44-32 scoring advantage in the paint and held Chicago to 36.8 percent shooting from the field. Gray is averaging 21.5 in the last four games for the Dream, who matched their six road wins from 2022.

“It’s not about consistent wins, it’s just about consistency in how we play,” Dream coach Tanisha Wright said. “We’re trying to be consistent in the things we’re asking (the team) to do.”

Atlanta, averaging 94.5 points while winning the last four by an average margin of 14.5, last won five straight during a six-game run from Aug. 3-12, 2018.

Chicago (8-10), meanwhile, won three in a row entering Friday, and trailed by one after three quarters. However, a Sky team that ranks near the bottom of the league in scoring (78.1 ppg), was held to fewer than 70 points for the sixth time this season.

“They’re trying hard,” said interim head coach/general manager Emre Vatansever, who is 1-1 since James Wade left to take an assistant coach job with the Toronto Raptors.

“We have to keep improving. That’s part of the process.”

Chicago All-Star Kahleah Copper (16.4 ppg) tallied 16 points Friday, but Courtney Williams, who averaged 20.3 and 8.3 boards in the previous three games, was held to three points and two rebounds.

Sitting 4-5 at home, the Sky have one more loss there than they did all of last season.

Timberwolves add F Troy Brown Jr., G Shake Milton

The Minnesota Timberwolves announced the signings Sunday of forwards Troy Brown Jr. and Leonard Miller and guard Shake Milton.

The team did not disclose terms, but Spotrac reported that Brown agreed to a two-year, $8 million deal with a club option for 2024-25.

Brown, 23, averaged 7.1 points and 4.1 rebounds in a career-high 76 games (45 starts) with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2022-23.

He has career averages of 6.6 points and 3.9 boards in 297 games (84 starts) in five seasons with the Washington Wizards, Chicago Bulls and Lakers. The Wizards drafted Brown out of Oregon with the 15th pick in 2018.

Milton, 26, averaged 8.4 points, 3.2 assists and 2.5 rebounds in a career-high 76 games (11 starts) in his fifth season with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2022-23.

Milton has career averages of 9.3 points, 2.7 assists and 2.4 rebounds in 254 games (45 starts) since the 76ers obtained his rights from Dallas after the Mavericks drafted him in the second round out of SMU in 2018.

Miller played last season for the NBA G League’s Ignite and averaged 16.9 points and a team-high 10.1 rebounds. He pulled down a team-record 21 rebounds on March 12 against the Texas Legends.

The Timberwolves acquired the 19-year-old Toronto native’s draft rights on June 23 from the San Antonio Spurs, who had selected him in the second round (33rd overall) of the 2023 NBA draft.

League unveils groups, format for inaugural NBA Cup

The NBA on Saturday unveiled the format, groups and dates of its inaugural NBA Cup — the in-season tournament that makes its debut in the 2023-24 season.

All 30 teams compete in six groups but only eight advance to the knockout rounds that will culminate with a winner being crowned on Dec. 9 in Las Vegas.

Let the games begin on Nov. 3.

“We are excited to introduce the NBA In-Season Tournament as an opportunity to further enhance and innovate around our season structure,” NBA executive vice president Joe Dumars said in a release. “With the addition of this new marquee event on the NBA calendar, we are focused on providing players and teams with another competition to win, engaging fans in a different way and driving further interest in the early portion of the regular-season schedule.”

To establish which teams ended up in which group, the NBA placed teams in five different pots based on where they finished in the 2022-23 standings.

From there, one team from each pot was randomly selected into each of the three groups in that conference:

Pot 1: The teams with the three best prior-season records in a conference.
Pot 2: The teams with the fourth- through sixth-best prior-season records.
Pot 3: The teams with the seventh- through ninth-best prior-season records.
Pot 4: The teams with the 10th- through 12th-best prior-season records.
Pot 5: The teams with the 13th- through 15th-best prior-season records.

The groups came out as follows:

Group 1: Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Atlanta Hawks, Indiana Pacers, Detroit Pistons
Group 2: Milwaukee Bucks, New York Knicks, Miami Heat, Washington Wizards, Charlotte Hornets
Group 3: Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, Toronto Raptors, Chicago Bulls, Orlando Magic
Group 4: Memphis Grizzlies, Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Lakers, Utah Jazz, Portland Trail Blazers
Group 5: Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Clippers, New Orleans Pelicans, Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets
Group 6: Sacramento Kings, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, Oklahoma City Thunder, San Antonio Spurs

The six teams that win their group plus two wild cards advance to the knockout rounds, which will be single elimination. Every team plays four games in group play — every other team in its group once.

The semifinals will be played Dec. 7 and the NBA Cup championship on Dec. 9.

The 67 games across both stages of tournament will count toward the regular-season standings except the championship. Each team will continue to play 82 regular-season games in the 2023-24 season.
Players on the winning team earn $500,000 each while the semis pay $200,000.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich signs 5-year contract

San Antonio Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich has signed a five-year contract that is reportedly worth in excess of $80 million.

The Hall of Fame coach has won five NBA titles with the Spurs since taking over as coach in 1996. He is the NBA’s all-time leader with 1,366 regular-season coaching victories.

Popovich, 74, will be in charge of the development of No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama, the most hyped player to enter the NBA since LeBron James in 2003. Popovich will be 79 when the contract runs out in 2028.

It is the third time San Antonio has held the top pick during Popovich’s tenure. David Robinson (1987) and Tim Duncan (1997) both became Hall of Fame players.

Popovich is a three-time NBA Coach of the Year.

San Antonio has missed the playoffs in each of the past four seasons, and bottomed out with a 22-60 record last season. Prior to that, the Spurs made the playoffs in 22 consecutive seasons.

Nets waive veteran G Edmond Sumner

The Brooklyn Nets waived veteran combo guard Edmond Sumner on Saturday.

Sumner, 27, averaged 7.1 points in 53 games (12 starts) in his lone season with the Nets in 2022-23.

He played his first four seasons with the Indiana Pacers before missing 2021-22 with a torn left Achilles tendon.

The 2017 second-round draft pick has career averages of 6.2 points and 1.5 rebounds in 161 games (41 starts).

NAS News: Christopher Bell captures pole for Crayon 301

LOUDON, N.H. — Joe Gibbs Racing driver Christopher Bell will start Sunday’s Crayon 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway exactly where he finished his last start at the 1.058-mile New England track: in position No. 1.

Bell, 28, won Saturday’s pole qualifying session for the Crayon 301 (2:30 p.m. ET, USA Network, PRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) with a lap of 124.781 mph in the No. 20 JGR Toyota — just a tick faster (.007-seconds) — than his teammate, Martin Truex Jr., who will start his No. 19 JGR Toyota alongside on the front row.

Stewart-Haas Racing’s Aric Almirola was close to earning his second pole in as many weeks — putting his No. 10 SHR Ford only .18-second off Bell’s work. He’ll start on the second row next to fellow Ford driver Joey Logano in the No. 22 Penske Racing Ford Mustang.

It’s the first pole position of the year for Bell and fifth of his career and it comes at a track where the Oklahoma-native has already established himself one of the very best. He joins Kyle Busch as the only two drivers with victories in all three of NASCAR’s national series at New Hampshire — highlighted by last year’s NASCAR Cup Series win and also including three consecutive NASCAR Xfinity race wins from 2018-21 and a 2017 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series victory.

“The amount of sliding around we did today, the lack of grip, I think the cream is going to rise to the top [in the race],” Bell said. “The good drivers, good cars will be able to pass and get their way to the front. I start at the front and hopefully we stay up there but this is a place where people will try different strategies by staying out, taking two tires, short-pitting, long-pitting, whatever the case may be so you’re not guaranteed to just start out front and stay there all day.”

The remaining top qualifiers include Penske Racing’s Joey Logano and 23XI Racing’s Tyler Reddick will start fifth and sixth on the third row. Current NASCAR Cup Series championship leader William Byron was the only Hendrick Motorsports driver to advance to the final qualifying round and he will start his No. 24 Chevrolet seventh — alongside Reddick’s teammate Bubba Wallace’s No. 23 Toyota.

Brad Keselowski — a two-time New Hampshire race winner — will start the No. 6 Roush-Fenway-Keselowski Ford ninth, alongside a fellow champion of the sport, three-time New Hampshire NASCAR Cup Series race winner Kyle Busch in the No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet.

Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick – a four-time New Hampshire winner – will start 13th in the No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford. He is attempting to become the track’s all-time winningest driver in his final start before retiring at the conclusion of the season.

Noah Gragson was the top qualifying rookie. He’ll roll off 29th in the Legacy Motor Club No. 42 Chevrolet. Fellow rookie Ty Gibbs will start the No. 54 JGR Toyota last in the 36-car race field.

–Kyle Busch off to a fast start

Kyle Busch’s three victory total so far in 2023 already tops his season win tally in each of the last three seasons.

The two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion sits in second place in the standings — only 36 points behind leader William Byron heading into Sunday’s New Hampshire race. The driver of the No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet said Saturday that he absolutely has his eyes set on challenging for the regular season title and the extra points bonus that pays for the 10-race Playoffs to close out the year.

“I think I was looking at it about race two or three,” Busch said with a laugh, noting the regular season priority. “I think you always kind of try to keep a pulse on it and just kind of see what’s going on. Seven weeks ago, we weren’t looking too good. But we’ve made some really good headway in the last seven weeks of being able to work our way back up the points standings and get ourselves closer to that front.

“I was doing a points study earlier this week. We’re 120 stage points less than William Byron. And if I had half of that I’d be leading the points by 20, you know what I mean. We have to be able to execute better in the stages to get stage points. That’s what it’s going to come down to. We know our weaknesses, just still trying to figure out how to improve that.”

–Fabulous four for Kevin Harvick

Kevin Harvick’s four wins at New Hampshire Motor Speedway are most among drivers. Should he collect a record fifth winner’s lobster at the New England-miler, it would be his first trip to New Hampshire Victory Lane since 2019 and first trip to any victory lane since the 2014 series champion’s back-to-back victories last summer at Michigan and Richmond, Va.

In recognition of Harvick’s retirement at the end of the season, New Hampshire presented Harvick with a personalized musket, a nod to historical nature of the area.

“It’s just been a good place for us to race throughout the years,” said Harvick, who not only has a series high win total here, but Top-5 finishes in nine of the last 12 races, including three wins in the just the last eight trips to the oval.

“I grew up on a lot of the short tracks and flat short tracks out West and we spent a lot of time at RCR [Richard Childress Racing] at a lot of the flat tracks – and always ran good. That carried over to Stewart-Haas Racing and just wound up being one of our really good spots.

“I feel like four wins should be 10, but I feel like that at a lot of places. So, I guess that’s just the racer’s mentality on how you think about things. It’s been a great place to race and I’ve seen it go through some different transitions as far as the layout of the track, but it’s been fun to come here and we have a great following up here.”

–Ryan Preece feels at home

Stewart-Haas Racing newest addition to the driver lineup, Ryan Preece arrived in New Hampshire especially optimistic about earning his first NASCAR Cup Series victory at what he considers his “home track.” The Connecticut native figures he has easily turned more laps and run more races at New Hampshire than at any other track that circuit visits.

Although Preece earned his career first pole position at Nashville last month, he is still racing for his maiden series victory and he currently sits 81 points below the Top-16 Playoff cutoff line.

This weekend is important to him.

“New Hampshire is a place I’ve had a lot of laps on – a lot more than most tracks we go to” said Preece, who drives the No. 41 SHR Ford. “I feel really comfortable here. It’s that energy you have, that swagger when you walk into a race track where you feel comfortable. New Hampshire was definitely a track going into it, that I know what I need as a race car driver to find victory lane or run really well.”

–Intensity rising as playoffs near

With only seven races remaining to set the 16-driver Playoff field, drivers concede there is a very real uptick in intensity. Obviously, where they sit in the championship standings affects their approach. This, they say, is exactly the kind of season-long intensity this NEXT Gen car has created.

“I think the intensity is as much as ever, with how much Playoff points matter, I think it matters even more now because there’s not real clear favorites, there’s not cars that are the fast car every single week now,” said Logano, the reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion. “Knowing that, collecting Playoff points and doing great in the regular season becomes more important.

“You can probably group five or six cars together and say those are the favorites and then everyone else is trying to catch them, but I don’t there’s like “that’s the guy.” He may be for four or five weeks and then everybody catches up to him. It doesn’t take much to get ahead these days or get behind.”

Why U.S. municipalities are electing “Night Mayors” to rule during the wee hours

New York is famous for being the city that never sleeps, but officials in the Big Apple, and other major U.S. urban centers, only recently woke up to the need to give nightlife the respect it deserves rather than treat it like a nuisance that must be contained.

“Nightlife contributes $35 billion in economic activity in New York City’s economy and supports nearly 300,000 jobs, and $700 million in local tax revenues,” says José Soegaard, deputy director of the city’s Office of Nightlife, which was created about five years ago. “We see the Office of Nightlife as a necessary lifeline to serve the industry… and the work that we’ve been doing since has really set out to fill that void.”

Including New York, 15 cities around the United States, including Washington, Pittsburgh, Orlando and New Orleans, have created “night mayor” positions to provide a liaison between local government and nightlife businesses. Most night mayors do not have regulatory authority.

It’s a trend that started overseas. More than 50 cities around the world, including Amsterdam, Paris, London, and Berlin, have night mayors.

“It’s a paradigm shift in how we view nightlife. In general, nightlife has been seen as a liability or a sector that needs heavy regulation,” says Salah Czapary, informally known as the night mayor of Washington, although his actual title is director of the Mayor’s Office of Nightlife & Culture. “That shift has seen nightlife, and the cultural economy, more as an asset that needs to be elevated, that needs to be regulated within reason, that needs policies and practices that support its growth.”

https://www.parisjewelry.com/

Washington’s nightlife industry brings in $7.1 billion in annual revenue, contributing $562 million in annual tax revenue to the city. The industry also provides about 65,000 jobs.

The Office of Nightlife & Culture, which was created in 2018, also focuses on issues including the needs of night-shift workers, noise and trash complaints, permitting challenges, and late-night transportation.

“The nightlife economy, the cultural economy, can be a second economy for cities,” Czapary says. “But that economy operates generally when the government is closed and so there was a need to have an advocate and a liaison for the nightlife, the cultural economy, the hospitality industry, in general, within government to further policies that benefit that sector.”

The position of night mayor is currently vacant in New York City, but the Office of Nightlife there continues to provide constituent services to the mostly small- and medium-sized businesses that dominate nightlife, helping them navigate the city’s bureaucracy and agencies.

“We created free mediation services for nightlife establishments and their neighbors to help resolve quality-of-life disputes before enforcement becomes necessary,” Soegaard says. “Typically, we’re talking about things related to sound, or perhaps line management, or when the trash goes out on the curb. There’s all kinds of different ways where what goes on in, and around, an establishment might have impacts on someone who lives upstairs, next door, across the street.”

The city of Orlando in Florida hired a night mayor after experiencing issues in its central business district in the evening and overnight hours.

“There was a lot of crowding and congestion, particularly traffic at 2 a.m., when the bars close and people head home. There was a lot of inefficiency,” says Dominique Greco, Orlando’s first night mayor. Her official title was “nighttime economy manager,” a position she held for four years, until March 2021.

https://organicgreek.com

“It was surprising to me how little the authorities, the municipality, knew about the nightlife world and what happens in their downtown at night, and how best to be more progressive and more proactive on it,” Greco says.

Under her leadership, Greco says Orlando became the first city in the country to create rideshare hubs in the downtown entertainment area.

“Ultimately organized with Uber and Lyft, the rideshare giants, to pull people out of the district,” she says. “Then we could make more traffic flow and people could have security and proper lighting.”

Jess Reia, an assistant professor of data science at the University of Virginia, was a member of the night council in Montreal, Canada, from 2020 to 2022, where Reia worked on data research and nighttime governance policies. Reia says it’s about time that American cities shift the perception of nightlife from a liability to an asset.

“This is more of a global movement, and I’m very happy to see that the United States is finally catching up,” Reia says. “Having a night mayor is a way of saying we care about our citizens during the 24-hour cycle. We want to have more vibrant nightlife. We want to have less conflict at night.”
