NHL News: James Reimer racks up 41 saves as Sharks blank Jets

James Reimer made 41 saves and Noah Gregor had a goal and an assist as the San Jose Sharks recorded a 3-0 shutout win over the visiting Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday.

The victory ended San Jose’s nine-game (0-6-3) winless streak, avoiding the eighth double-digit winless drought in Sharks franchise history.

Reimer collected his third shutout of the season and was often spectacular in stopping all 41 shots faced. The highlight was a save-of-the-year candidate at 16:19 of the second period, when Reimer extended his stick to knock away Mason Appleton’s shot on an open net.

Gregor recorded his first multi-point performance of the season, including the game’s first tally at 9:51 of the first period. It was the 12th time in the Jets’ last 14 games that the opposing team had scored the opening goal.

Kevin Labanc and Martin Kaut scored the Sharks’ other goals, both in the third period.

The Sharks are only 2-10-4 in their last 16 games, but both wins have come against the Jets. San Jose (20-39-15, 55 points) also collected a 3-2 overtime victory in Winnipeg on March 6.

Winnipeg (41-31-3, 85 points) missed another chance to solidify its playoff position. The Jets hold the Western Conference’s second wild-card spot, but are just two points ahead of the Calgary Flames.

An ill-timed scoring slump has plagued the Jets during their postseason push. The Jets are 5-6-1 with three shutout losses and only 24 goals scored in their last 12 games.

Despite outshooting the Sharks by a 41-30 margin, Winnipeg couldn’t solve Reimer. The Jets didn’t help their cause with several off-target shots, including a Josh Morrissey shot off the goalpost in the opening minute of the second period.

The scoring woes have extended to the Jets’ power play. After going 0-for-3 with the extra attacker on Tuesday, the Jets are 1-for-30 on the power play in their last eight games.

Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck stopped 27 of 30 shots.

NHL News: Oilers roll past Knights behind Ryan Nugent-Hopkins

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had a goal and four assists, Connor McDavid had three assists and Leon Draisaitl added a goal and an assist as the Edmonton Oilers cruised to a 7-4 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday night in Las Vegas.

It was the second five-point game of Nugent-Hopkins’ career. Evander Kane scored the 300th goal of his career and Zach Hyman, Darnell Nurse, Evan Bouchard and Brett Kulak also scored for Edmonton (43-23-9, 95 points), which closed to within three points of the first-place Golden Knights (46-22-6, 98 points) in the Pacific Division.

Stuart Skinner finished with 18 saves as the Oilers extended their point streak to eight games (7-0-1).

Jonathan Marchessault scored two goals for Vegas, which had a four-game winning streak snapped. Alex Pietrangelo had two assists and William Karlsson and Michael Amadio also scored, while Jonathan Quick stopped 28 of 34 shots before giving way to Laurent Brossoit, who made four saves.

Edmonton, playing the second game of a back-to-back that began with a 5-4 win at Arizona on Monday, took a 3-2 lead in a wild first period that saw five goals in the first 10 minutes.

Marchessault gave Vegas a 1-0 lead just 72 seconds into the game, but the Oilers tied it just 37 seconds later on a power-play goal by Bouchard.

Nugent-Hopkins made it 2-1 at the 8:20 mark when he scooped up Nicolas Roy’s turnover in the slot and then fired a wrist shot past Quick’s glove side for his 35th goal of the season. Karlsson tied it 1:04 later with a short-handed goal.

Draisaitl put Edmonton back ahead, 3-2, just 24 seconds later with his 47th goal of the season; he tapped in a cross-crease pass from McDavid.

Vegas tied it early in the second period on Amadio’s 13th goal, but Edmonton answered with three goals in a span of 9:33 to break the game open.

Nurse got the first at the 6:01 mark with a sharp-angle slap shot from the bottom of the left circle. Kane followed with his milestone goal before Hyman potted his 33rd goal on a power play off a cross-crease pass from McDavid.

Kulak made it four unanswered goals for the Oilers early in the third period when he came out of the penalty box and scored his first goal since Dec. 7.

Marchessault ended the scoring with 1:32 remaining.

NHL News: Stars blast Blackhawks, tighten Central race

Four scorers helped the Dallas Stars to a 4-1 win against the host Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday.

Tyler Seguin, Colin Miller, Joe Pavelski and Luke Glendening tallied for the Stars (40-20-14, 94 points), who are one point behind the Central Division-leading Minnesota Wild and tied in points with the second-place Colorado Avalanche, who hold a game in hand.

Dallas’ Jake Oettinger made 17 saves.

Tyler Johnson scored for the Blackhawks (24-44-6, 54 points), who have lost six straight. Alex Stalock made 26 saves before he was given a game misconduct at 16:32 of the third period. Petr Mrazek stopped all three shots faced in relief.

Seguin gave Dallas a 1-0 lead at 5:45 of the first period. Jani Hakanpaa carried the puck down the right side in transition, skating to the right faceoff dot before dishing to Seguin, who beat Stalock from the slot.

Miller made it 2-0 at 18:59 in the final second of a power play. Evgenii Dadonov, along the right wall, found a wide-open Miller with a cross-ice pass, and the defenseman fired a shot from the top of the left circle.

The Stars outshot the Blackhawks 9-4 in the first period and by early in the second held a 20-8 advantage in shot attempts.

Taylor Raddysh had a rare chance for Chicago midway through the middle frame on a three-on-two rush, but his backhand from low in the left circle skipped just wide of the far side of the net.

Pavelski pushed Dallas’ lead to 3-0 at 11:24 of the second when he tipped Joel Hanley’s point shot in the slot by Stalock’s glove side.

The Blackhawks couldn’t muster any form of attack for much of the second, going nearly 17 minutes with just one shot on goal in the period. They finally got their second of the frame with just over three minutes left, earning sarcastic cheers from the crowd.

Glendening capitalized on a short-handed two-on-one break to extend it to 4-0 at 7:04 of the third period. It was his third goal of the season and first in 48 games.

Johnson snapped a 14-game goal drought when he swept in a rebound in front of the net to cut it to 4-1 at 10:33.

Celebrity Hailey Bieber, the youngest daughter of actor Stephen Baldwin and Kennya Baldwin, has been featured in several major ad campaigns and walked the runway many times. She has been married to celebrity singer Justin Bieber since 2018. She is also the founder of a skincare line and has hosted several shows on television. The supermodel has a whopping 49.5 million fans and followers on social media.

The model has obviously not let recent events affect her mindset when it comes to her career, as evidenced by her most recent post, with the brunette showcasing her posing skills in a fresh batch of images for famous sportswear and footwear company. Hailey made a preppy entrance as she rested up against a wall while dressed in a sporty outfit.

Her hair was styled into two high pigtails and looked longer than it does now, suggesting that the ad was filmed before her hair-cutting experience. Hailey, who opted for a serious look for the series, wore a two-piece with prep-school influences and a scarlet sweater thrown over her shoulders for extra flair. Hailey wore a red sports bra with the FILA logo sewn into the left-hand area. The logo for the brand was also visible on the striped waistband of her navy-blue tennis-style miniskirt.

In the second and third pictures, fans received a better look at Hailey’s outfit because the camera was angled out more to highlight both the clothing and Hailey’s slim figure at the same time. Hailey chose to pose half-seated in image two, and her long pigtail braids curled around her shoulders and touched her face.

The celebrity model wore identical gold earrings on her earlobes, a gold watch and bangle on her wrist, and a gold chain around her neck. The final picture showed Hailey standing with her hands on her hips and what appeared to be headphones on, playing music.

NFL News: Report: Patriots not in on Lamar Jackson

The New England Patriots are not expected to be players in the Lamar Jackson sweepstakes, despite the quarterback’s reported interest in joining the team, The Athletic reported Wednesday.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft set the rumor mill into overdrive earlier this week when he said he got a text from rapper Meek Mill about Jackson’s interest in the Patriots. Kraft said it was up to head coach Bill Belichick.

Not happening, per The Athletic.

Jackson’s current contract demands and the draft capital a team would have to give up are a bridge too far for the fiscally conservative Patriots, per the report.

Also, the Atlanta Falcons have removed themselves from pursuing Jackson. Falcons owner Arthur Blank told two different media outlets that despite their interest in Deshaun Watson last year, the timing now is different.

The Falcons named Desmond Ridder their starting QB for 2023.

“Every year is different,” Blank told USA Today. “Deshaun was a different situation. It was a different time and space. I think Lamar is a great player … but we look at our roster and our ability to continue to build our roster now and have salary cap freedom, which we’ve never had.”

Jackson has asked to be traded, but the market for him is shrinking.

On Tuesday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions all said they’re not interested in pursuing Jackson. The Washington Commanders, New York Jets and Carolina Panthers already had stated similarly.

The Jets are actively seeking to trade for Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

The Seattle Seahawks re-signed Geno Smith earlier this month, with coach Pete Carroll adding the team “couldn’t afford” Jackson.

Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard on Monday confirmed his interest in Jackson. Colts owner Jim Irsay later in the day said Jackson’s contract demands weren’t an issue, but that a team has to guard against compromising “your future to do it.”

“It really has nothing to do with actual dollars,” Irsay said. “I mean, paying a contract like that is not a problem. I mean, it’s not a problem for me. The issue is what’s the right thing to do for the franchise in terms of what helps us win in the long run.”

Jackson took to Twitter on Tuesday to defend himself against claims that durability is an issue with him.

“I don’t remember me sitting out on my guys week 1 vs jets To week 12 vs Broncos,” he tweeted. “How come all of a sudden I sit out because of money in which I could’ve got hurt at anytime within that time frame. When we know the Super Bowl been on my mind since April 2018.”

“Let’s get real. I rather have a 100% PCL than go out there and play horrible forcing myself to put my guys in a bad situation now that’s selfish to me,” he said in a second tweet.

Jackson missed four games in 2021 and five games in 2022 with injuries. Jackson, 26, is 45-16 as the Ravens’ starter and won the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award in 2019.

NFL News: Reports: DE Calais Campbell to sign with Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons are closing in on a one-year deal with free agent defensive end Calais Campbell, the latest in a series of moves to bolster a moribund defense, ESPN and NFL Network reported Wednesday.

Campbell, 36, was released by the Baltimore Ravens earlier this month in a cost-cutting move. The Ravens, who cleared $6.5 million in cap space, were hoping to re-sign Campbell on a lesser deal.

Instead, Campbell will take his six Pro Bowls and 99 career sacks to a team that has vastly improved its defense in free agency. The Falcons also added safety Jessie Bates III, defensive tackle David Onyemata and linebacker Kaden Elliss. Further, the Falcons own the No. 8 pick in the upcoming draft.

The Falcons ended 2022 ranked 23rd in the NFL in scoring defense (22.7) and 27th in total yards per game (362.1).

Campbell had 36 tackles and 5.5 sacks in 14 starts for the Ravens last season.

A 2017 All-Pro, Campbell was named to the Hall of Fame’s All-2010s team.

Campbell was a second-round draft pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 2008. He played for the team through the 2016 season then signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as a free agent.

The Jaguars traded him to the Ravens in March 2020 for a fifth-round draft pick.

In 227 career games (208 starts), Campbell has 809 tackles (165 for loss), 237 quarterback hits, 99 sacks, three interceptions, 57 passes defensed, 16 forced fumbles and 12 fumble recoveries.

NFL News: NFL will allow teams to play on two short weeks

NFL teams will be allowed to appear in two Thursday games on short weeks based on a rule change implemented Tuesday at the NFL owners meetings in Phoenix.

The league tabled a vote on permitting flex scheduling for Thursday night games, a tweak that, if ultimately approved, could prevent matchups of losing teams in a prime-time showcase.

The change that was implemented could end up seeing some teams play on Thursday three times. Should a team be scheduled on consecutive Thursdays, only the first of those two games would be considered a short week.

In prior years, every team was assigned at least one Thursday game per season, but that will no longer be a requirement moving forward.

NFL executive vice president and chief media and business officer Brian Rolapp said, “We’re interested in making sure that we get exposure for all of our clubs. We also believe that these national windows are for clubs that are playing well. We want to put the best teams in the best windows.”

As for flex scheduling for Thursday games, New York Giants owner John Mara, who opposes the idea, fears it might pass at the next league meetings in May, according to ESPN.

“At some point, can we please give some consideration to the people who are coming to our games?” Mara said, according to ESPN. “People make plans to go to these games weeks and months in advance. And 15 days ahead of time to say, ‘Sorry, folks, that game you were planning on taking your kids to Sunday at 1, now it’s on Thursday night?’ What are we thinking about?”

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell responded to Mara’s remarks by saying, “There isn’t anybody in any of our organization that doesn’t put our fans first. Providing the best matchups for our fans is what we do. That’s part of what our schedule has always focused on. Flex has been part of that. We are very judicious with it and careful with it. We look at all the impacts of that before a decision is made.”

Report: Army to name Kevin Kuwik its next coach

Army will name Butler assistant Kevin Kuwik as its next head coach, Stadium reported Wednesday.

Kuwik has more than 20 years’ experience in coaching but also is a military veteran. He served in Iraq and earned a Bronze Star for meritorious service, the highest merit award granted by the Army, according to his Butler bio. He was honorably discharged in 2006 and then resumed his coaching career full-time at Ohio after an 18-month leave of absence for his service.

He worked with Butler coach Thad Matta at Ohio State as video coordinator, then held assistant coaching positions at Dayton and Davidson before reuniting with Matta at Butler in 2022.

At Army, Kuwik would replace Jimmy Allen, who mutually parted ways with the institution earlier this month.

The Black Knights went 17-16 (10-8 Patriot League) this season for the second winning campaign during Allen’s stint. Allen was 98-112 in his seven seasons. His final game was a 91-74 loss to Colgate in the semifinals of the Patriot League tournament.

Indiana lands Ball State transfer Payton Sparks

Indiana has added center Payton Sparks, a transfer from Ball State.

The 6-foot-9 Sparks averaged 13.3 points and a team-leading 8.7 rebounds for Ball State in the 2022-23 season. He also shot a team-best 58.8 percent from the field.

Sparks announced the move Wednesday on Twitter.

A native of Winchester, Ind., Sparks was named Mid-American Conference freshman of the year in the 2021-22 season.

Sparks leaves Ball State after two seasons with averages of 13.4 points and 8.6 rebounds in 62 games (all starts).

He entered the transfer portal on March 16.

Duke freshman Dariq Whitehead to enter NBA draft

Duke freshman Dariq Whitehead will enter the 2023 NBA Draft, he announced Wednesday.

“I’m really looking forward to this next step in my basketball career and I’m truly blessed to have this opportunity,” he said in a team-released statement. “I’ve dreamed of these moments for so long. I can’t wait to get after it and continue preparing for the NBA Draft. I want to thank Duke University from my professors to my coaches and my teammates — I appreciate your help with everything this year.”

In a tweet, Whitehead said he will be represented by Excel Sports Management. Hiring an agent locks in his decision to enter the draft and not return to the Blue Devils.

The 6-foot-6 Whitehead was a five-star prospect from New Jersey and the No. 2 overall player in the Class of 2022, per the 247Sports composite. He missed the start of the season with a broken right foot suffered during a team workout in the preseason.

Whitehead played in 28 games (seven starts) and averaged 8.3 points per game. He led the Blue Devils with a 42.4 shooting percentage from 3-point range.

Against Oral Roberts in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Whitehead came off the bench to score 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting. In the second-round loss to Tennessee, he played a career-high 33 minutes.
