Reggie Jackson intends to sign with the Denver Nuggets as a free agent after completing a buyout with the Charlotte Hornets, ESPN reported late Saturday night.

Jackson, 32, was traded to the Hornets on Thursday at the trade deadline in the deal that sent Mason Plumlee to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Jackson, 32, was averaging 10.9 points in 52 games (38 starts) for the Clippers this season.

Jackson averages 12.9 points per game for his career since being selected No. 24 overall in the 2011 draft by Oklahoma City.

NBA roundup: Kings spoil Mavs’ Luka Doncic-Kyrie Irving debut

De’Aaron Fox scored 14 of his 36 points in overtime to lead the Sacramento Kings to a 133-128 victory over the visiting Dallas Mavericks on Saturday night and gain a split of a back-to-back set.

Domantas Sabonis recorded 22 points and 14 rebounds before fouling out and Terence Davis tallied 22 points off the bench as Sacramento won for the third time in the past four games. Kevin Huerter scored all 15 of his points in the second half, Trey Lyles added 14 points and Harrison Barnes had 13 for the Kings.

Kyrie Irving had 28 points and seven assists for Dallas and Luka Doncic added 27 points and nine rebounds in the first contest of their highly anticipated pairing. Irving was acquired from the Brooklyn Nets earlier this week and Doncic missed the previous four games — including Irving’s first two — due to a heel injury.

Josh Green scored 23 points and Christian Wood added 15 for the Mavericks, who had a three-game winning streak halted. Dallas beat the Kings 122-114 on Friday in a game it never trailed.

76ers 101, Nets 98

Joel Embiid scored 37 points and hit a pair of go-ahead free throws with 5.2 seconds remaining as Philadelphia rallied down the stretch for a victory over Brooklyn in New York.

The Sixers outscored the Nets 16-4 over the final 7:20 and beat Brooklyn for the third time in as many meetings when Spencer Dinwiddie’s potentially game-tying, 32-foot 3-point attempt was ruled on replay to be after the final buzzer.

James Harden added 29 points in a hostile return to Brooklyn, getting booed every time he touched the ball after he was granted a trade from the Nets to the Sixers last year. Mikal Bridges scored 23 points in his Nets debut after being obtained from the Phoenix Suns on Thursday for Kevin Durant. Joe Harris added 18 for the Nets, Cam Thomas contributed 14 and Cameron Johnson chipped in 12 after being acquired with Bridges.

Nuggets 119, Hornets 105

Nikola Jokic turned in a triple-double with 30 points in another big game against Charlotte as visiting Denver won.

Jokic shot 11-for-22 from the field, collected 16 rebounds and distributed 10 assists. He also blocked two shots. The Hornets’ losing streak reached seven games despite LaMelo Ball coming within a rebound of a triple-double. He finished with 18 points and 12 assists. Jokic, who pulled in seven offensive rebounds, scored 40 points in a mid-December home victory against the Hornets.

The Hornets, who used nine players in the game, didn’t put up much of a threat in the fourth quarter. Dennis Smith Jr. scored six points in a 74-second span to close within 102-92, but DeAndre Jordan’s second dunk in as many possessions pretty much doused Charlotte’s momentum.

Heat 107, Magic 103 (OT)

Tyler Herro scored 23 points and Jimmy Butler collected 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists to fuel visiting Miami to an overtime victory over Orlando.

Gabe Vincent scored 20 points and Bam Adebayo recorded 13 points and 17 rebounds for the Heat, who overcame a 17-point deficit to secure their ninth win in a row in their home state. Included in that stretch was a 110-105 victory over Orlando on Jan. 27.

Markelle Fultz scored 17 points and rookie Paolo Banchero contributed 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Magic. Wendell Carter Jr. scored all 14 of his points in the first half, while Jalen Suggs and Moritz Wagner each finished with 14. Gary Harris missed a 3-point attempt with six seconds left in OT and Banchero reeled in the loose ball before inadvertently stepping out of bounds. Miami was able to secure the win from there.

Lakers 109, Warriors 103

Rui Hachimura hit two key hoops down the stretch, joining fellow newcomers D’Angelo Russell and Jarred Vanderbilt in double-figure scoring as Los Angeles held off host Golden State in San Francisco.

Dennis Schroder had a team-high 26 points and Anthony Davis put up a 13-point, 16-rebound double-double with three blocks for the Lakers, who snapped a three-game losing streak. The Lakers moved within 2 1/2 games of the ninth-seeded Warriors in the tightly bunched Western Conference playoff race.

LeBron James sat out his second straight game with a sore left foot. Stephen Curry missed his third in a row with an injured left knee. Jordan Poole totaled 29 points for the Warriors, including the team’s first 17 in the fourth quarter.

Hawks 125, Spurs 106

Trae Young produced 24 points and a season-high 17 assists to lead a balanced offensive attack as Atlanta turned it on in the second half for a win over visiting San Antonio.

The Hawks rallied from six points down in the second period to take a one-point advantage at halftime. Atlanta put the game away in the third period, when it outscored the Spurs by 15 points, and cruised to its fourth win in six games.

De’Andre Hunter added 24 points for the Hawks while Dejounte Murray scored 18 in his first game against his former team. Keldon Johnson led all scorers with 25 points while Jeremy Sochan added 18 points and Malaki Branham had 10 for the Spurs.

Knicks 126, Jazz 120

Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle became the first pair of New York teammates to score 30 points in consecutive games in almost 36 years, when the duo combined to lead the Knicks past visiting Utah.

Brunson finished with 38 points, including the tiebreaking 3-pointer that gave the Knicks the lead for good with 4:17 left. Randle had 31 points, including a 3-pointer to cap the 9-0 run sparked by Brunson’s 3-pointer. They are the first Knicks teammates to score 30 points in back-to-back games since Patrick Ewing (30 points, 31 points) and Gerald Wilkins (41 points, 33 points) on March 4 and 6, 1987.

Lauri Markkanen scored 29 points to lead five players in double figures for the Jazz, who have lost four of five. Jordan Clarkson had 24 points while Talen Horton-Tucker scored 23 off the bench.

Wizards 127, Pacers 113

Bradley Beal led seven scorers in double figures with 32 points, and Washington rolled at home for its eighth win in the past 11 games with a rout of Indiana.

Beal shot 13 of 18 from the floor, including 4 of 5 from 3-point range, to pace an offense that finished 48 of 75 from the floor and 12 of 26 from deep. Washington’s efficient offensive showing included a 6-for-6 performance from the floor for Daniel Gafford, who scored 13 points, 7-of-8 shooting by Deni Avdija en route to 16 points off the bench and 7-of-10 shooting from Monte Morris (17 points, six rebounds and four assists).

The loss marked the fourth straight for Indiana and 15th in the last 17 games. Tyrese Haliburton scored a team-high 21 points and notched for a game-high seven assists in the loss, Myles Turner added 20 points and both Buddy Hield and Bennedict Mathurin chipped in 16 points.

Cavaliers 97, Bulls 89

Donovan Mitchell scored 29 points and Jarrett Allen had 23 to help host Cleveland rally for a win against Chicago to extend its winning streak to six games.

Cleveland outscored Chicago 28-15 in the fourth quarter as the Bulls slumped to their third straight loss. The Bulls squandered a 13-point, third-quarter lead, losing their grip as the Cavs heated up midway through the second half. Cleveland scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to reclaim the advantage, taking the lead on a Mitchell trey that put the Cavs ahead 76-74 with 9:54 to play.

Chicago didn’t register its first points of the fourth until Coby White tied the game with a layup one minute later, but Cleveland responded with another 7-0 run. The Cavs swept the season series from the Bulls 4-0. Zach LaVine scored 23 points to lead the Bulls. DeMar DeRozan followed with 16 points, and Nikola Vucevic notched a double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Kings top Mavs in OT, spoil Luka Doncic-Kyrie Irving debut

It was different Saturday as Fox scored back-to-back baskets to give the Kings a 121-117 lead with 2:53 left in overtime. Irving then scored seven of Dallas’ next nine points and pulled his team within 127-126 with a 3-pointer with 24.6 seconds remaining.

Fox made two free throws with 18.4 seconds left to give Sacramento a three-point edge. Doncic missed a 3-pointer with 14 seconds left and Fox helped the Kings put the game away by sinking four more free throws.

Tim Hardaway Jr. of the Mavericks missed the second half with right hamstring tightness.

Dallas shot 51.6 percent from the field, including 20 of 51 from 3-point range.

The Kings connected on 51 percent of their shots and were 8 of 32 from behind the arc.

Fox intercepted Doncic’s shaky bounce pass and drove in for a rim-rattling dunk to give Sacramento a 112-111 lead with 1:44 remaining in regulation.

Dwight Powell made three of four free throws to give the Mavericks a two-point lead before Sabonis scored on a putback with 37.6 seconds left. Fox missed a 3-pointer as time expired in regulation.

Doncic scored 19 points in the first half for the Mavericks, who closed with a 17-2 burst to take a 64-62 halftime lead. Irving had seven points and drained a corner 3-pointer with 0.1 seconds left to give Dallas the lead.

Wood’s 3-pointer with 35.1 seconds remaining in the third quarter allowed the Mavericks to take an 88-86 lead into the final stanza.

PGA News: Scottie Scheffler holds 2-stroke lead at Phoenix Open

0

Scottie Scheffler shot a 3-under-par 68 Saturday for a two-shot lead after 54 holes on a long day at the WM Phoenix Open in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Scheffler sits at 13 under, two shots ahead of Canadian Nick Taylor (third-round 67) and Jon Rahm (68) of Spain.

Roughly half of the field had to complete their second round Saturday morning after play was suspended due to darkness Friday evening at TPC Scottsdale.

Jordan Spieth (69) and Canadian Adam Hadwin (71) are tied for fourth at 10 under while five players are four shots back in a tie for sixth.

Scheffler kicked off his third round with two birdies in the first four holes, sandwiching a bogey between two more birdies on Nos. 14 and 17. In his first title defense, Scheffler is bidding to become the seventh player to successfully defend his Phoenix Open title and first since Hideki Matsuyama in 2017.

“I haven’t been thinking about it too much,” Scheffler said of the title defense. “I’m in position now. Something I talked about at the beginning of the week was I felt like I’ve been on the outside looking in on Sundays. To be in the final group with a two-shot lead, I believe, is definitely a position I want to be in. I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”

Chasing him is World No. 3 Rahm, who’s trying to secure his third win of the season. Rahm opened with a bogey on the first hole but played clean golf the rest of the way, adding four birdies.

“To be even par through 11 was challenging. I had to dig deep to make a few putts and keep the round going,” Rahm said. “The few birdie putts that I had I didn’t really take advantage of. I had plenty of them. In that stretch of 2, 3 and 4 I wish I would have gotten a couple more than I did.”

Taylor has never cracked the top-40 in eight previous Phoenix Open starts but now he’s shooting for win No. 3 on tour.

“I’m just going to have to do my own thing tomorrow,” Taylor said. “Easier said than done. But if I keep playing like I have been playing I think I’ll have a decent chance coming down the stretch. But I can’t really pay attention to what they’re doing. If I get wrapped up in that it’s probably when I would struggle a little bit. I’ve been in a position where I’ve been an underdog, so I just got to keep my head down and keep playing.”

Spieth birdied three of his last six holes to move into contention. A top-10 finish would mark his 80th on tour.

Both Argentine players who made the semifinals in Cordoba, Argentina, advanced to the final with wins on Saturday.

Sixth-seeded Federico Coria took out third-seeded Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-4, 7-6 (2), and Sebastian Baez, the fourth seed, dispatched qualifier Hugo Dellien of Bolivia 6-4, 6-4.

Baez is ranked 47th in the world and Coria is No. 67.

Open Sud de France

Maxime Cressy of the U.S. defeated top-seeded Holger Rune of Denmark 7-5, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (4) in a tough match to advance to Sunday’s final in Montpellier, France.

Cressy finished with 15 aces to eight for Rune. He also had a return rating of 111 to just 47 for Rune in the match that lasted nearly 2 hours, 40 minutes.

Wings acquire Diamond DeShields in four-team deal

The Phoenix Mercury dealt guard Diamond DeShields to the Dallas Wings on Saturday in a four-team trade that also included the New York Liberty and Chicago Sky.

Phoenix landed 2021 Rookie of the Year Michaela Onyenwere from the Liberty and Dallas sent guard Marina Mabrey to Chicago. The Liberty acquired the rights to forward Leonie Fiebich from the Sky.

Dallas also received two first-round picks (No. 5 overall in 2023, 2024) from Chicago and the right to swap first-round picks in 2025, while the Sky received a 2024 second-round pick from the Mercury.

Phoenix landed a third-round pick in 2024 and second-round pick in 2025 from the Sky. New York received a second-round pick in 2024 from Chicago and the right to swap 2025 first-round picks with Phoenix.

DeShields, who turns 28 on March 5, averaged 13.1 points last season in her lone campaign with Phoenix. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 WNBA Draft spent her first four seasons with the Sky and was part of the franchise’s 2021 title team.

DeShields, the daughter of former MLB infielder Delino DeShields, has a 13.2 scoring average in 143 games (108 starts).

“Diamond DeShields has established herself as one of the premier wing players in the WNBA,” Dallas Wings CEO Greg Bibb said in a news release. “Her size, athleticism, ability to get to the rim and defensive acumen will make us a better basketball team.”

Onyenwere, 23, averaged 8.6 points in her strong rookie season but dipped to 4.7 last season. She has a 6.6 scoring average in 66 games (30 starts).

“Michaela is a player who can be dynamic at both ends of the floor and has already shown her potential in this league,” Phoenix general manager Jim Pitman said in a release. “She will be a great, versatile addition to our roster.”

Mabrey, 26, established career bests of 13.6 points and 3.7 assists last season. She also averaged 3.6 rebounds.

Overall, she has averages of 10.4 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 116 games (52 starts) in one season with the Los Angeles Sparks (2019) and three with Dallas (2020-22).

“Adding a player such as Marina who can play both guard positions, is a talented sharpshooter and gives her all every single game will all be vital for our team this year,” Chicago coach/general manager James Wade said in a release. “We are looking forward to having her as a big addition to our roster.”

The Sky are reloading after losing stars Candace Parker and Courtney Vandersloot in free agency. Azura Stevens also departed as a free agent and standout 3-point shooter Allie Quigley is sitting out the season.

Fiebich, 23, is a highly regarded German-born player currently playing in Spain. She was a second-round pick by the Los Angeles Sparks in 2020 but has never played in the WNBA.

Utah defeats Colorado for second straight win

Branden Carlson scored 17 points to lead Utah to a 73-62 victory over Colorado in their Pac-12 matchup in Salt Lake City on Saturday night.

Carlson shot 7-of-13 from the floor to help the Utes (17-9, 10-5 Pac-12) earn their second straight victory. Marco Anthony also finished with 17 points and added eight rebounds for Utah. Ben Carlson chipped in 10 points and eight boards. Rollie Worster added a team-high six assists before fouling out in the final minute.

KJ Simpson tallied 14 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals to lead Colorado (14-12, 6-9). Julian Hammond III added 11 points for the Buffaloes. Tristan da Silva finished with just six points on 3-of-12 shooting after scoring 20 or more points in his previous five games.

The Utes dominated on the glass. Utah outrebounded Colorado 41-29 and scored 12 second chance points off 11 offensive rebounds.

Utah broke a close game open early in the second half. Branden Carlson’s dunk ignited a string of four baskets over four possessions that gave the Utes a 50-36 lead.

Colorado went a pair of stretches of at least four minutes in the second half without making a basket. The second drought allowed Utah to use an 8-0 run punctuated by back-to-back baskets from Keba Keita to extend its lead to 62-44.

Utah scored three straight baskets — punctuated by a dunk from Branden Carlson — as part of a 14-3 run that gave the Utes a 21-10 lead midway through the first half.

Colorado never led before halftime, but the Buffaloes were able to stay close by forcing turnovers. Utah committed six turnovers in the first half, leading to 10 points on the other end for Colorado.

Hammond hit four free throws to trim the deficit to 36-32 just before halftime.

Texas A&M finishes rare sweep of LSU

Wade Taylor IV scored 23 points as visiting Texas A&M swept LSU in the regular season for the first time in six years with a 74-62 victory Saturday night.

Taylor hit five 3-pointers and Dexter Dennis made three, going over 1,200 points for his career. He finished with 13 and helped the Aggies (18-7, 10-2 SEC) win in Baton Rouge for the first time since the 2016-17 campaign.

Tyrece Radford chipped in 12 points and Henry Coleman III, scoreless in Tuesday’s win over Auburn, finished with eight.

Trailing 41-17 at halftime, LSU made things interesting in the second half, closing the gap to 61-53 on a 3-pointer by Adam Miller with 4:08 to play.

Miller drilled four 3-pointers and finished with 18 points. Freshman Tyrell Ward scored a career-best 15 for the Tigers (12-13, 1-11), who have lost 12 consecutive games.

Taylor and Dennis knocked down 3-pointers in the first four minutes as the Aggies built an 8-2 lead.

Dennis stayed on a roll with a jump-stop shot under the basket and a 3-pointer that stretched the Texas A&M lead to 13-2 with 14:48 remaining.

The Tigers started the game 1-for-14 from the field, including an 0-for-8 showing from 3-point range. Their only points came on Ward’s jumper from the free-throw line with 17:20 to go.

LSU went nearly seven minutes without scoring as shots rolled or bounced off the rim. The Aggies’ Solomon Washington blocked a shot on a driving layup attempt by Justice Hill.

Jalen Reed ended the scoreless run when he knocked down a free throw at the 10:40 mark that cut the Texas A&M lead to 19-3.

Ward stopped a field goal drought of a little over nine minutes when he connected from 3-point range with 8:14 left, cutting the commanding lead to 26-7.

Three-pointers continued to fall with Taylor and Dennis both connecting late in the half to push the Aggies’ lead to 36-12 with 5:12 to go.

As rough as the first half was for the Tigers, it ended on a high note as Miller connected from long range with three seconds to play.

Villanova dodges comeback bid, holds off Seton Hall

Eric Dixon scored a game-high 19 points, Caleb Daniels supplied 18 and host Villanova pulled away from Seton Hall 58-54 Saturday night in Philadelphia.

Dixon and Daniels combined to score 24 of the Wildcats’ 27 first-half points and got more help in the second half when Seton Hall threatened to rally.

Cam Whitmore scored 12 points and Brandon Slater added all eight of his in the second half to help Villanova (12-13, 6-8 Big East) win its second in a row.

Al-Amir Dawes nailed a late 3-pointer that cut the Pirates’ deficit to 53-47. Seton Hall (15-11, 8-7) then made Villanova sweat by scoring seven points in the final 16 seconds, including two free throws off an ill-advised loose-ball foul and Jamir Harris’ 3-pointer, before eventually dropping its second straight game.

Tyrese Samuel had team highs of 14 points and 10 rebounds for Seton Hall. Dawes scored 13 points and Kadary Richmond went for 10 points, nine assists and five rebounds.

The teams combined to start the game 2-for-18 before Richmond’s steal and fast-break dunk. He had four quick points for a 7-3 lead, while Villanova went 7:29 between baskets.

Dixon made three straight shots in the paint and strung together a personal 8-0 run that flipped a four-point deficit into a Villanova lead. Daniels nailed a corner 3-pointer to make it 11 straight for the Wildcats, who went on to make seven shots in a row to grow the lead as large as 27-16.

Dawes made a corner jumper to beat the buzzer, but the Wildcats still led 27-20 at the half, with Dixon at 13 points and Daniels at 11 with three 3-pointers. The Pirates stayed alive with 11 second-chance points off six offensive rebounds.

Villanova led by as many as 13 before Seton Hall started to author a comeback with a 13-1 stretch.

Dawes committed his fourth foul to save a Villanova breakaway, which led to just one made free throw. He made up for it on the other end by converting an up-and-under layup and foul shot to cut the deficit to 38-37 with 9:31 to play.

But the Wildcats responded with the next nine points, benefitting from three Seton Hall turnovers in that time. Whitmore’s open dunk energized the building, and he added a three-point play at 6:56 to make it a 10-point game once more.

Daniels surpassed 1,000 career points at Villanova with his first 3-pointer of the second half. He finished 4-of-7 from 3-point land.

Arizona State takes care of business in OT, avoids upset vs. Cal

Desmond Cambridge Jr. scored five of his 24 points in overtime as Arizona State pulled off a 70-62 victory on Saturday to avoid a Pac-12 upset against last-place Cal at Berkeley, Calif.

DJ Horne scored 12 points and Frankie Collins added 10 points with 10 rebounds for the Sun Devils (18-8, 9-6 Pac-12), who won for just the third time in their last eight games but did pull off the road sweep of the Bay Area schools after a victory at Stanford on Thursday.

Arizona State shot just 33.3 percent from the field and managed to win without leading rebounder Warren Washington (7.0 rebounds per game), who missed his second consecutive contest because of COVID-19 concerns.

Monty Bowser and Grant Newell each scored 14 points for the Golden Bears (3-22, 2-12), who lost their ninth consecutive game. Sam Alajiki and DeJuan Clayton each scored 11 points for Cal, who lost their 12th home game of the season.

Arizona State led 32-30 at halftime before both teams embarked on a rough shooting performance in the second half. Each side made just four field goals over the first 15 minutes of the period.

The Sun Devils grabbed a 49-43 lead with 5:38 to play on a layup by Austin Nunez, staying afloat with nine free throws to that point after halftime. Cal quickly pushed in front 51-49 with 2:43 remaining on two free throws and back-to-back 3-pointers from Clayton and Alajiki.

Arizona State found its shooting touch with a basket from Devan Cambridge and a 3-pointer from Horne to tie the game 54-54 with 2:01 remaining. Horne’s basket started a 6-0 run to give the Sun Devils a 57-54 lead with 48 seconds remaining before Alajiki hit another 3-pointer to tie the game with 25 seconds to go.

Horne missed a mid-range jumper that would have given Arizona State the victory in the closing seconds of regulation.

The Sun Devils outscored the Bears 13-5 in overtime and 9-2 over the final 2:52.
