NCAAF News: 5-star QB Colin Hurley commits to LSU, reclassifies to ’24

Five-star quarterback Colin Hurley committed to LSU and reclassified to the Class of 2024 on Friday.

The 6-foot, 213-pound prospect from Trinity Christian Academy in Jacksonville, Fla., was the No. 3 QB in the 247 Sports composite for 2025 and will be re-ranked for 2024.

Hurley, who visited LSU for a Sept. 10 win against Southern, chose the Tigers over offers from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Miami and Ohio State, among others.

Hurley joins a loaded quarterback room in Baton Rouge that includes 2023 four-star commitment Rickie Collins, true freshman Walker Howard and redshirt freshman Garrett Nussmeier.

NFL News: Former Washington DL Dave Butz dies

Former Washington defensive lineman Dave Butz, a two-time Super Bowl winner who played 16 seasons in the NFL, has died. He was 72.

The Commanders announced his passing Friday on their website. They did not provide a cause of death, however.

Former Washington quarterback Joe Theismann took to Twitter to reflect on his former teammate.

“Lost a dear friend today. Dave Butz,” Theismann wrote. “Dave, Mark Mosley and I used to ride to games together. A true gentle giant. Rest In Peace my friend.”

Butz received All-Pro honors and a Pro Bowl selection after registering 11.5 sacks in 16 games for Washington in 1983. He was named to the NFL’s 1980s All-Decade Team and helped Washington capture two championships with victories over the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl XVII and the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXII.

He recorded 64 sacks, seven fumble recoveries and two interceptions in 216 career games (191 starts) with the then-St. Louis Cardinals and Washington franchise. The Cardinals selected Butz with the fifth overall pick of the 1973 NFL Draft, however he joined Washington after an issue in his contract led him to becoming a free agent.

Commissioner Pete Rozelle ruled that Washington had to send St. Louis a pair of first-round picks and a second-round selection to complete the deal.

“We’re heartbroken over the loss of Washington Legend Dave Butz, a 2x Super Bowl champion and member of our Ring of Fame and 90 Greatest list,” the Commanders wrote on Twitter. “Sending our deepest condolences to Dave’s family and friends.”

Butz famously is remembered for checking himself out of a hospital to play in Washington’s game against the New York Jets during the 1987 season. He made the game-saving sack on Ken O’Brien before returning to the hospital after the game.

Butz’s name resides in the Ring of Fame at FedExField.

NFL News: Colts RB Jonathan Taylor not spotted at practice

Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor’s availability for Sunday’s game at New England is in question after he was not spotted on the practice field by beat reporters Friday.

Taylor has yet to participate in practice this week while dealing with a nagging ankle injury.

Should Taylor sit out on Sunday, Deon Jackson would be in line to start for the Colts (3-4-1) against the Patriots (4-4) in Foxborough, Mass.

Taylor, 23, initially sustained the ankle injury in the Colts’ 24-17 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Oct. 2. He sat out the next two games before totaling 85 yards from scrimmage in a 19-10 setback to the Titans on Oct. 23 and 76 in a 17-16 defeat to the Washington Commanders on Sunday.

Taylor has rushed for 462 yards and one touchdown and added 16 catches for 71 yards in six games this season.

Jackson, 23, rushed 25 times for 104 yards and a touchdown in the two games in which Taylor didn’t play. Jackson has five carries for minus-4 yards in the other three games in which he has played.

NFL News: Panthers RB Chuba Hubbard (ankle) ruled out for Sunday

Carolina Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard will miss Sunday’s game at Cincinnati with an ankle injury.

The Panthers ruled Hubbard out for a second straight week after he did not practice Friday. He did limited work on Wednesday and Thursday.

D’Onta Foreman will once again carry the load for the Panthers (2-6) against the Bengals (4-4), with rookie Raheem Blackshear providing backup.

The Panthers will also be without safety Juston Burris (concussion) and wide receiver Rashard Higgins (illness). Tight end Stephen Sullivan (illness) is doubtful, while cornerback Donte Jackson (ankle) and defensive end Amare Barno (knee) are questionable.

Hubbard, 23, carried nine times for 63 yards and a touchdown in the Week 7 win against Tampa Bay. It was his first start of the season following the trade of Christian McCaffrey to San Francisco.

Foreman, 26, followed up a 118-yard effort against the Buccaneers by rushing for another 118 yards and three TDs in last Sunday’s 37-34 overtime loss at Atlanta.

NFL News: Bills’ Jordan Poyer, Jets’ Corey Davis out for AFC East clash

Buffalo Bills safety Jordan Poyer and New York Jets wide receiver Corey Davis have been ruled out of Sunday’s game in East Rutherford, N.J.

Poyer had yet to practice this week after injuring his elbow in the second half of the Bills’ 27-17 victory over the Green Bay Packers last Sunday.

The absence of the All-Pro could result in newly acquired safety Dean Marlowe seeing additional time against the Jets. Marlowe, a former Bill, was acquired from the Atlanta Falcons on Tuesday.

Poyer, 31, has four interceptions to go along with 21 tackles in five games this season.

Linebackers Von Miller (ankle) and Matt Milano (oblique) are considered day-to-day with their respective injuries, Bills coach Sean McDermott said.

Davis, 27, will miss his second straight game after sustaining a knee injury in New York’s 16-9 victory over the Denver Broncos on Oct. 23.

Davis has 19 catches for 351 yards and two touchdowns in seven games this season.

Rookie Garrett Wilson, Braxton Berrios and Denzel Mims likely will see a bit more playing time in his absence.

OVERWATCH News: Fuel advance to Overwatch League’s grand final

0

With fans in attendance for the first time in three years, the Dallas Fuel stormed back after dropping the first map to win three straight and down the Houston Outlaws 3-1 in Anaheim, Calif., on Thursday night, advancing to the grand final of the Overwatch League playoffs.

The loss sends the Outlaws to a do-or-die, lower-bracket final against the San Francisco Shock on Friday, with Houston looking to earn a rematch with the Fuel. A Shock win would create a grand final featuring the top two seeds from the regular season (Dallas finished first, San Francisco second).

The championship match is scheduled for Friday night.

The Shock made it to the final by way of two wins Thursday, sweeping the Seoul Dynasty 3-0 in the lower-bracket quarterfinals and the Hangzhou Spark 3-0 in the semi. The Spark got past the London Spitfire 3-1 in the other lower-bracket quarterfinal.

The $2.5 million season-ending playoffs — which began with 12 of the 20 OWL teams — started in an online format but moved to the Anaheim Convention Center for Thursday’s and Friday’s matches. It’s the OWL’s first in-person playoffs since 2019.

The championship side will earn $1 million, and the runner-up will pocket $500,000.

The Fuel, who went 20-4 in the regular season, fell to Houston 2-1 on Nepal to open their upper-bracket final. But Dallas won 2-1 on King’s Row, 2-1 on Route 66 and 1-0 on Colosseo to complete their perfect run to the grand final.

The battle came after a pair of lower-bracket quarterfinals to open the day. First, the Shock made quick work of the Dynasty — 2-1 on Lijiang Tower, 3-1 on Paraiso and 2-1 on Dorado.

The Spark advanced in the next match. After Hangzhou won 2-1 on Lijiang Tower to open the match, London took King’s Row 3-2. Hangzhou answered with a 4-3 win on Route 66 then closed out the match 1-0 on Colosseo.

That set up Thursday’s final match. The Shock opened with a 2-1 win on Oasis, but the Spark took King’s Row 4-1 to even up the match. San Francisco again took the lead with a 4-3 win on Circuit Royal, and Hangzhou could not answer as San Francisco won 1-0 on Colosseo.

Overwatch League playoffs prize pool
1. $1 million
2. $500,000
3. $350,000
4. $250,000 — Hangzhou Spark
5-6. $100,000 — London Spitfire, Seoul Dynasty
7-8. $55,000 — Los Angeles Gladiators, Florida Mayhem
9-12. $35,000 — Philadelphia Fusion, Shanghai Dragons, Atlanta Reign, Toronto Defiant

PTC Shares Up 6 percent on Strong Q4 Results

0

PTC (NASDAQ:PTC) shares gained more than 6% yesterday following the company’s reported strong Q4 results despite investor concerns of challenging macros, with 15% organic ARR growth that was near the high-end of guidance.
Management acknowledged the macro risk by providing a scenario analysis for guidance, but highlighted the resiliency of their recurring business model from both a top and bottom-line perspective as they continue to see broad-based demand.
Although revenue/EPS isn’t a focus for the company, at $508 million/$1.27, both were nicely above the Street estimates of $497 million/$1.15. Fiscal 2023 ARR was guided to 10-14% growth. Additionally, management believes they can deliver $560 million of free cash flow, representing a 35% growth.

Trimble Shares Down 13 percent Since Q3 Announcement

0

Trimble (NASDAQ:TRMB) shares fell around 13% since the company’s reported mixed Q3 results on Wednesday. EPS came in at $0.66, in-line with the expectations, while revenue of $884.9 million missed the Street estimate of $912.59 million.
ARR growth of 13% (up 16% organic) accelerated in the quarter, supporting 120bps of gross margin expansion quarter-over-quarter. While mindful of macro crosswinds, this quarter’s performance reflects the value of the company’s intentional portfolio shift toward more resilient earnings power across the cycle.
The company provided its fiscal 2022 outlook, expecting EPS to be in the range of $2.61-$2.67, compared to the Street estimate of $2.75. Full-year revenue is expected in the range of $3.665-3.715 billion, compared to the Street estimate of $3.782 billion.

October reports strong job growth, 261,000 jobs added, above expectations, Biden welcomes report

0

On Friday, the Labor Department released the job report for October and said that 261,000 jobs had been added, indicating that the economy remained resilient. Despite higher interest rates, jobs remained robust and defied economists estimates of 200,000 in October. This final glimpse of the labor market before the midterms is expected to be used by both the national parties, in their closing pitch. President Joe Biden has already welcomed the strong jobs report. Major U.S. stock indexes also rose, after the jobs report was released.

President Joe Biden celebrated the jobs gains and said, “We’re going to do what it takes to bring inflation down. But as long as I’m president, I’m not going to accept an argument that the problem is that too many Americans are finding good jobs.”

This year, the economy has added 407,000 jobs, on an average, every month while the increase in monthly jobs in 2021 was 562,000. Although there have been gains in October, there is a slight rise in unemployment rates which stands at 3.7 percent. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics said that unemployment has remained at a narrow range between 3.5 and 3.7 percent from March.

October jobs saw gains across the following sectors:

healthcare industry

professional and technical services

manufacturing and

leisure and hospitality jobs.

Sectors that reported no monthly increases included construction and retail.

Wages have also increased and this has helped workers but consumer spending has become cautious due to inflation. Average hourly earnings rose by 4.7 percent which is well below the inflation rate.

The labor market is gradually softening but not as much as predictions by economists after the Federal Reserve’s aggressive campaign to raise interest rates to control inflation. The strong labor market proves the resilience of the overall economy in the U.S.

The Federal Reserve has aggressively increased interest rates. On Wednesday, the Fed announced another increase, which was the sixth increase in the year. The next increase might not be as aggressive, according to some.

Kentucky F Oscar Tshiebwe (knee) doubtful for opener

All-American forward Oscar Tshiebwe is doubtful for No. 4 Kentucky’s home opener Monday night against Howard as he continues to recover from knee surgery.

“I would be stunned if he played Monday,” head coach John Calipari said after Thursday’s 111-53 exhibition victory against Kentucky State.

Calipari added that he would be “somewhat surprised” if Tshiebwe, the reigning national Player of the Year, played in Friday night’s second game of the season against Duquesne in Lexington, Ky.

Tshiebwe told reporters last month that he “absolutely” planned to be ready for the season opener. He underwent a minor procedure on his right knee on Oct. 13 after experiencing some pain and swelling.

Tshiebwe transferred to Kentucky last year after 1 1/2 seasons at West Virginia and led the nation in rebounding. He averaged 17.4 points, 15.1 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 1.6 blocks per game in 34 starts.

He was named a preseason All-American and the SEC preseason Player of the Year.

Wildcats fans are hopeful to have Tshiebwe back for a Nov. 15 showdown against Michigan State in the Champions Classic in Indianapolis.

“It’s mainly a pain threshold and he’s just not normal,” Calipari said. “If he wanted to play Monday, I probably wouldn’t let him. He needs a few more days. If he wants to play Friday, I’m going to have to work him out myself and see. And if I did, he’d probably play 10 or 15 minutes just to get his legs under him.”
