EU users cannot access Threads, Meta says it’s blocking EU users from the app via VPN

0
EU users cannot access Threads

Although Meta Platforms launched its new app Threads via its popular app Instagram for users in the U.S. and U.K., and many other countries, the parent of popular platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram will not launch the app in the European Union. Meta confirmed that Threads was blocked for EU users via VPN.

Meta released a statement where it declared that it had taken “further measures” that would disallow people in European countries from accessing Threads as the app is unavailable in the bloc. However, the statement also reiterated the importance of Europe and called it a “very important market.”

The statement also mentioned that Meta hoped to expand the availability of Threads in the EU but did not provide a timeline.

https://www.parisjewelry.com/

Meta Platforms is reportedly looking at the provisions in the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in the EU, in order to be complaint with it, when it rolls out Threads in this important market.

The EU has also ruled that Meta needs to get permission from the bloc to show personalized ads. This could also complicate the rollout of Threads in the EU.

Threads is free like other popular apps such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp but is funded by advertisements.

Meta launched Threads earlier in July across 100 countries. Threads collect private data from its users and this is the reason behind the late launch in the European Union. It has to find a way for its app to comply with the DMA.

The DMA has designated Meta to be a potential “gatekeeper.” It has to be in compliance by September 6, as that is when the EU is planning to officially designate all gatekeepers after potentially choosing seven.

Threads had an explosive start but there are mixed reports on its current growth. Its closest rival Twitter has paid subscriptions as well and has also seen a lot of changes after it was bought late last year by Elon Musk, many of which have not gone down well with its users. However, Twitter is ahead as of now and it is still unknown whether Threads would beat Twitter in number of daily active users, as both the apps have pluses and minuses.

Celebrity Jake Paul’s $100M fight offer to Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg sparks speculation among excited web fans

lev radin

Celebrity social media personality and professional boxer, Jake Paul, has joined the increasing chorus of voices for the proposed cage match showdown between Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, and Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Meta. Known for his controversial persona, Paul has fought in several high-profile bouts and is no stranger to the boxing scene. In a recent episode of his podcast, he shared his opinion on the potential fight, suggesting that Musk, who reportedly has a six-inch height advantage, would come out on top.

After the proposed cage match was announced, it started making waves online, with web fans eagerly waiting in anticipation for the clash between these two prominent figures in the social media realm. While no official confirmation has been made regarding the fight, rumors are swirling, and speculation has reached a fever pitch, particularly after Zuckerberg’s recent training session with UFC champions Alexander Volkanovski and Israel Adesanya.

However, the main talking point of Paul’s comments was not his prediction but rather his audacious offer. In classic Jake Paul fashion, he extended a massive $100 million deal to both Musk and Zuckerberg, proposing that they take their proposed MMA fight to the Middle East and donate their earnings to charity.

Furthermore, Paul voiced his skepticism about partnering with UFC President Dana White. Paul emphasized that if Musk and Zuckerberg truly wished to do the fight for charity and a greater cause, they should reconsider their association with White. While Paul himself is currently focused on his upcoming fight against Nate Diaz in August, the question remains whether either Musk or Zuckerberg will accept his lucrative offer.

Jake Paul’s rise to fame began with Vine videos before he transitioned to the popular free video sharing website. He played the role of Dirk Mann in Bizaardvark. Paul has only been boxing for five years but was already honored with the privilege of gracing the cover of Sports Illustrated Magazine for their August issue, in recognition of his achievements in the sport.

Celebrity Jake Paul’s $100 million offer has injected further excitement into the potential clash between Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. As web fans eagerly await the outcome, Jake Paul continues to make headlines in both the boxing world and the realm of social media influencers.

MLS News: Orlando City deal Atlanta United a rare home loss

0

Duncan McGuire’s goal in the 60th minute gave Orlando City a 2-1 win over host Atlanta United on Saturday night.

All game long, McGuire attempted to run off the back shoulder of the defenders before he broke through for Orlando City (10-6-7, 37 points).

Midfielder Mauricio Pereyra earned his second assist of the night as he sent McGuire in behind with a nice through ball, and McGuire slipped the ball past goalkeeper Brad Guzan for the lead. It was McGuire’s eighth goal of the season.

After taking the lead, Orlando City shifted to a deeper defensive position, conceding possession and long-shot attempts.

Atlanta (9-7-8, 35 points) outshot Orlando City 17-10 on the night with both teams putting four shots on target. Goalkeeper Pedro Gallese finished with three saves on the night for the Lions, with perhaps no bigger save than his diving effort on Thiago Almada’s long free kick deep into second-half extra time. Guzan finished with two saves.

Caleb Wiley opened the scoring for Atlanta in the 22nd minute after crashing the box to pick up a loose ball. Machop Chol got in on goal, and his shot trickled through Gallese and rolled toward the goal. A defender slid in for a goal-line clearance, but the ball popped directly into the path of Wiley, who slotted it home for his fourth goal of the season.

However, it took Orlando City less than four minutes to equalize. The Lions won a free kick and Pereyra served it into the box. Antonio Carlos ran up and hit a thunderous header inside the far post. That was his first goal of the season the fourth in his MLS career.

Atlanta’s absorbed only its second home loss of the season.

The game was full of fouls and extra-curricular activities. Atlanta was whistled for 18 fouls to Orlando City’s 13, but the Lions had six yellow cards to Atlanta’s two. Three of Orlando City’s yellow were not for fouls; two were due to dissent and one for time wasting.

NHL News: Lightning retain Tanner Jeannot with two-year deal

Restricted free agent forward Tanner Jeannot signed a two-year, $5.33 million contract to remain with the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday.

Jeannot played in 20 games for the Lightning last season after being acquired from the Nashville Predators prior to the trade deadline. He recorded four points (one goal, three assists).

The Lightning surely coveted Jeannot, as they gave up defenseman Cal Foote, a first-round pick in the 2025 draft, a second-rounder in 2024 and third-, fourth- and fifth-round selections in the 2023 draft.

Jeannot, 26, had five goals and nine assists in 56 games with Nashville before the trade.

In three NHL seasons with Nashville and Tampa Bay, Jeannot has 34 goals and 28 assists in 152 games.

LPGA News: Linn Grant fires 62, opens 6-stroke lead at Dana Open

0

Sweden’s Linn Grant shot a blistering 9-under-par 62 on Saturday to take a commanding six-shot lead after three rounds of the Dana Open in Sylvania, Ohio.

The 24-year-old sits at 18-under 195, with five players tied for second at 12 under. Two players are seven shots off the lead in a tie for seventh.

In pursuit of her first win on the LPGA Tour, Grant put some distance between herself and the pack with an eagle and eight birdies against one bogey. She birdied four consecutive holes — Nos. 2-5 — to kick off her round. Then she holed out from 149 yards for eagle on No. 11.

“Well, yeah, obviously we had a delay in the middle of it pretty much,” said Grant, playing in her first Dana Open. “I was 4-under at the time. Had to go in. I wasn’t really feeling as confident as I would like to, but I found some good swings on the range and felt better going out after the delay. (Hole) 11 was amazing. Like, I hit a really good drive and a really good second shot, it just took one bounce pretty much and went in. I think it’s my first hole-out eagle probably. Just really cool.”

Grant finished two strokes shy of tying the 18-hole record and one stroke off tying the 54-hole record.

Second-round leader Annie Park shot an even-par 71 to sit in a tie for seventh with Australia’s Minjee Lee (67 on Saturday). Park had Friday’s low round, shooting a 63.

Stephanie Kyriacou of Australia fired a 65 to give herself a shot among a cadre of players at T2. She’s joined in the pack by Mexico’s Maria Fassi (67), Finland’s Matilda Castren (67), Denmark’s Emily Kristine Pedersen (67) and Allisen Corpuz (68).

Kyriacou, also in search of her first win on tour, vaulted 18 spots up the leaderboard thanks to eight birdies against two bogeys.

“I think my putting has been pretty good,” Kyriacou said. “I actually changed putters for the first time in like 12 years, so it was either going to be really good or really bad. So I’m glad it was really good. But, yeah, I holed some nice putts, I’ve given myself some opportunities as well, which has been good but really converted them.”

Saturday’s third round was delayed four hours by rain.

Brittney Griner carries Mercury past Sparks

Brittney Griner’s 29 points and 11 rebounds led the host Phoenix Mercury to a 78-72 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks on Sunday.

Griner shot 12 of 18 from the field, while Diana Taurasi went 7 of 13 from the floor, including 2 of 6 from 3-point range, to finish with 22 points to go along with five assists and four rebounds. She also collected her first dunk of the season with nearly five minutes gone in the first half.

Moriah Jefferson chipped in 11 points and eight assists for the Mercury (4-14), who ended a three-game losing streak and won for just the second time in 11 games.

The Mercury shot 30 of 63 (47.6 percent) from the field, including 5 of 17 (29.4 percent) from 3-point range. Phoenix outrebounded the Sparks 37-30.

Los Angeles (7-12) was led by Nneka Ogwumike, who had 20 points and 14 rebounds, while Jordin Canada added 16 points.

Azura Stevens chipped in 13 points and eight rebounds, while Jasmine Thomas had 10 points for the Sparks, who have dropped five straight games.

The Sparks shot 26 of 70 (37.1 percent) from the field, including 8 of 21 (38.1 percent) from beyond the arc.

Trailing 68-57 with less than five minutes left, the Sparks went on a 13-4 run to pull to within 72-70 after Stevens split a pair of free throws with 1:21 remaining.

Destanni Henderson stole the ball from Griner with 1:02 to go, but the Mercury got the ball back when Griner won a jump ball against Stevens after Phoenix won a coach’s challenge on a Taurasi foul that was overturned.

Taurasi made it a four-point game with a pair of free throws with 45.1 seconds remaining.

After Canada’s two free throws tied the game at 33 with 3:43 left in the second quarter, the Mercury closed the period on a 9-3 run to take a 42-36 halftime advantage.

Griner had 16 points before the break for Phoenix, while Ogwumike led the Sparks with 12.

Arike Ogunbowale’s 28 pace Wings past Fever

Arike Ogunbowale poured in 28 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter, as the visiting Dallas Wings held off the Indiana Fever 77-76 Sunday afternoon at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Ogunbowale’s 3-pointer with 4:37 to go tied the game at 68-68. She proceeded to hit back-to-back jumpers and three free throws as Dallas took control against an Indiana team that refused to quit.

Natasha Howard scored 16 points, and Crystal Dangerfield, playing in her 100th career game, added nine as Dallas (10-9) won its second in a row.

The Fever (5-14) have now lost seven straight; ending the day still searching for their first win since June 22 despite 18 points from Aliyah Boston. NaLyssa Smith scored 17 and Kelsey Mitchell finished with 12.

Lexie Hull had a chance to win it for the Fever with no time left, but her 3-pointer was off the mark.

Ogunbowale scored 10 straight points during a critical stretch in the fourth as the Wings found a way to shake off the Fever, who had rallied from a 13-point first-half deficit to make it close.

Tied at 38-38 at the half, both teams searched for momentum in the third. Indiana seemed to get it when Mitchell finished a fastbreak opportunity with a layup to give the Fever a 44-43 lead with 8:43 left.

Mitchell drilled a 3-pointer with 3:02 remaining, giving Indiana a 57-51 lead in a third quarter that featured five lead changes. Mitchell scored 10 in the third.

Dallas scored eight straight points to close the quarter, with two coming off a layup by Howard that tied the game at 59-59 going into the fourth.

The Wings led 27-17 after one and stretched the lead to 32-19 after Ogunbowale was fouled on a made jumper and hit the ensuing free throw with 6:17 left.

Indiana roared back on the strength of a 12-0 run that included the first Fever 3-pointer of the day as Grace Berger hit one to cut the Dallas lead to 32-25. Indiana had missed its first six from distance.

Team Stewart outguns Team Wilson behind MVP Jewell Loyd

Jewell Loyd scored a game-high 31 points Saturday night, all from behind the 3-point line, as Team Stewart outgunned Team Wilson 143-127 to win the WNBA All-Star Game in Las Vegas.

Loyd, the Seattle Storm star who leads the league in scoring at 24.3 per game, sank 10 of 21 3-point attempts and also hit a 4-pointer in setting a record for most points in the event. She added six assists and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.

Brittney Griner (Phoenix) added 18 points and 13 rebounds for Team Stewart, picked by New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart. Napheesa Collier (Minnesota) tallied 20 points, while Sabrina Ionescu (New York) tallied 18 points and Kahleah Copper (Chicago) hit for 16.

Kelsey Plum (Las Vegas) pumped in 30 points for Team Wilson, composed of players selected by Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson. Wilson hit for 20, while Arike Ogunbowale (Dallas) scored 18 points. Rhyne Howard (Atlanta) netted 16 and Cheyenne Parker of Atlanta added 14 points.

Team Stewart canned 50 percent of its field goal attempts and earned a 64-47 advantage in rebounding.

It didn’t take long for the game to become what most All-Star games are — a chapter on high-scoring hijinks with defense merely an option. Griner dunked just over six minutes into the game to give Team Stewart a 23-16 lead, although Plum’s layup cut Team Wilson’s deficit to 29-27 after a quarter.

Team Stewart hit the figurative X button in the second quarter for 44 points. WNBA 3-point shooting champion Ionescu drained three 4-pointers — one spot on each wing about 33 feet out was marked as a 4-pointer — to help her team take a 73-63 halftime lead.

The margin grew as high as 20 late in the third quarter with the help of a 3-pointer and a reverse layup by Copper. Parker drew Team Wilson within 110-93 heading to the fourth quarter when she drilled a 3-pointer as time expired.

Earlier in the day, the WNBA announced that Phoenix would host next year’s All-Star Game.

Phoenix awarded 2024 WNBA All-Star Game

The WNBA announced Saturday that three-time champion Phoenix will host the 2024 All-Star Game.

It will mark the third time hosting for Phoenix (2000, 2014). The Mercury last won the league championship in 2014.

WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert made the announcement from Las Vegas, site of Saturday’s ASG.

The game will be the first for new Phoenix owner Mat Ishbia, who formally took over the Suns and Mercury in February.

“Since I’ve been in the league, they’ve done so much,” Engelbert said. “They are so great to work with under the new ownership with Mat Ishbia.”
