MLS News: Real Salt Lake rally, salvage draw vs. Sporting Kansas City

0

Real Salt Lake rallied from a two-goal halftime deficit to post a 2-2 draw against Sporting Kansas City in a match between two red-hot teams on Wednesday night in Kansas City, Kan.

Daniel Salloi and Johnny Russell scored in the first half for the hosts before Danny Musovski struck early in the second half and Anderson Julio netted the equalizer for RSL.

Salt Lake (9-7-7, 34 points) extended an overall unbeaten streak to eight matches and moved to 5-0-3 in its last eight MLS road matches.

Kansas City (6-10-8, 26 points) failed to pick up its second win of the month and take full advantage of 18-year-old Salt Lake goalkeeper Gavin Beavers, who was making his fifth career MLS start.

Beavers had two saves, SKC’s Kendall McIntosh finished with seven and each goalkeeper made a crucial save in the final moments of the match to preserve the scoreline.

It was a quiet start until SKC broke through in the 30th minute. Beavers’ clearing attempt from the end line was picked off by Kansas City, and Russell dribbled down the left side. His cross found Salloi at the far corner of the 6-yard box, and Salloi one-timed in his fifth goal of the season.

SKC began pushing upfield in the 36th minute, and Erik Thommy fed Russell in the box. Russell made a move to get around defender Justen Glad and rocketed a right-footed shot past Beavers for his fourth goal of 2023.

Pablo Ruiz and Cristian “Chicho” Arango were among the Salt Lake substitutions to start the second half, and they immediately hooked up to create an RSL goal. Ruiz’s long pass to Arango drew two defenders on the former LAFC star, and Arango tapped a pass to Musovski breaking free to score his fifth goal of the year.

RSL kept attacking, but McIntosh made five saves between the 50th and 61st minutes, three times on Arango.

Then Julio subbed on in the 69th minute and needed just three minutes to score. Julio dispossessed SKC defender Daniel Rosero Valencia of the ball, sprinted in and shot below McIntosh’s dive. It was Julio’s 15th career MLS goal — his 11th as a substitute — and his fourth of the season.

Julio had a chance to put RSL ahead in the 89th minute when he received a pass while sprinting toward the box, but McIntosh dived in front to block it.

SKC had their chance in the first minute of second-half stoppage time when Alan Pulido found Gadi Kinda with a cross into the box. Kinda tried a point-blank header, but Beavers made the save.

WWC News: U.S. favored for WWC 3-peat, but plenty of strong compeition

The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup will kick off on Thursday with Australia and New Zealand both playing, but the host countries aren’t considered strong threats to prevent the United States from claiming a third consecutive WWC.

The U.S. has rebounded from a three-match skid against strong European competition last fall and will begin the competition on a nine-match winning streak. The Americans have held onto their No. 1 spot in the FIFA World Rankings, and are +225 favorites at BetMGM to win this year’s WWC.

The U.S. is also the book’s biggest liability, easily leading the 32-team field with 56.8 percent of the total bets and 77.4 percent of the money backing it to win the title.

However, it certainly will be no cakewalk and the U.S. could find a significant challenge in its own group from the Netherlands, which reached the 2019 finals. However, the Netherlands is still a +2500 longshot at BetMGM, in part due to being grouped with the U.S. The two are scheduled to play their group match on July 26.

The second-shortest odds belong to England, which has moved from +450 to +400 while drawing 8.9 and 4.6 percent of the action respectively. England is the book’s third biggest liability behind Canada, which has drawn 2.9 percent of the money at +3300 longshot odds.

Spain (+550) and Germany (+700) are the other two teams with odds shorter than +1000. While Spain has been modestly supported with 3.6 percent of the total bets, Germany has drawn 4.6 percent.

This is the ninth edition of the Women’s World Cup, and the first time it will be jointly hosted by two countries. It’s also the first playing of the tournament since the field was expanded from 24 teams.

Among the countries making their first appearance will be Portugal, which has a relatively storied history in the men’s game.

And among the players who will be making their final WWC appearances is longtime U.S. star Megan Rapinoe. As she prepares to step away from the professional game, Sophia Smith is among the players the U.S. will be looking toward among a host of emerging young stars.

While established star Alex Morgan is the +450 favorite at BetMGM to be the tournament’s top goal-scorer, Smith is not far behind at +650. Smith has 10 goals in 13 appearances for the NWSL’s Portland Thorns this season, contributing to her odds shortening from +900 while she has been backed by 3.4 percent of the prop bets and 3.7 percent of the money.

The book’s biggest liability is Barbra Banda, Zambia’s star striker who plays professionally in China. She has been backed by a lopsided 69.0 percent of the bets and 75.7 percent of the money wagered on the WWC’s top goal-scorer.

The second biggest liability is Germany’s Alexandra Popp, who has drawn 5.2 and 5.4 percent of the action, respectively.

Being the top goal-scorer in any World Cup typically requires a fairly deep run by the player’s team.

The 2023 WWC final will take place on Aug. 20 at Sydney Olympic Stadium.

CONCACAF News: Late goal lifts Mexico past Panama in Gold Cup final

0

A strong individual effort by Santiago Gimenez produced the lone goal in the 88th minute, and Mexico defeated Panama 1-0 on Sunday in the championship game of the CONCACAF Gold Cup in Inglewood, Calif.

Orbelin Pineda’s long pass found Gimenez just past the halfway line, one-on-one with Panama defender Harold Cummings. With Cummings on a yellow card, he couldn’t bully Gimenez off the ball, and Gimenez took advantage by dribbling into the penalty area with Cummings chasing.

Gimenez, who entered the game just three minutes earlier, then rolled a left-footed shot that snuck past Panama goalie Orlando Mosquera and went inside the right post.

The goal lifted Mexico to its record ninth Gold Cup title, its first since 2019. The United States is second with seven. The only other nation to win since the current format was implemented in 1991 was Canada, the 2000 champion.

Panama was competing in its third final, having lost to the United States in 2005 and 2013.

Mexico appeared to take a lead in the 33rd minute, but Henry Martin’s goal off a cross from Luis Romo was overturned for an offside call after a video review.

Mexico finished with a 23-14 edge in shots, including a 7-2 advantage in shots on target. Mexico goalie Guillermo Ochoa made two saves, while Mosquera stopped six shots.

Kentucky Derby, Preakness winner Funny Cide dies at 23

0

Funny Cide, the gelding who rose to popularity after winning the first two legs of the Triple Crown in 2003, died Sunday in Lexington, Ky. He was 23.

According to published reports, Funny Cide died of complications of colic.

Funny Cide became the horse of the people after stunning wins in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. Empire Maker won the race conducted on a rainy day.

Owned by Sackatoga Stable and trained by Barclay Tagg, Funny Cide’s emergence as a 3-year-old was largely unexpected.

But it led to a national following and he later served as a celebrity thoroughbred at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs,N.Y. He spent the final 15 years of his life at Kentucky Horse Park.

“He’s one of the best and he just did a lot for us in every way,” Tagg told the Thoroughbred Daily News. “Some horses are great race horses. Some of them are good friends. He just had a lot of charisma with him.”

Funny Cide earned over $3.5 million in his racing career, winning 11 of 38 races.

NHL News: Coyotes terminate Alex Galchenyuk’s deal after arrest

The Arizona Coyotes terminated Alex Galchenyuk’s contract Friday after his arrest on multiple charges last weekend.

Police in Scottsdale, Ariz., arrested him Sunday on charges of private property hit and run, disorderly conduct, failure to obey, resisting arrest and threatening or intimidating, per multiple reports. No injuries were reported in the incident.

New details emerged later Friday, as a police report from the incident alleged that Galchenyuk threatened to have two officers killed and directed a racial slur toward one of the officers several times.

The report alleged that Galchenyuk cited connections in Russia and said, “One phone call and you’re all dead, your whole family, your whole blood line is dead.”

A witness told police that Galchenyuk was the driver of a car that had crashed into a street sign. He was found lying on the ground near the car and was eventually helped back to the car by a passenger, later identified as Galchenyuk’s father.

Galchenyuk, 29, was booked in the Scottsdale city jail on misdemeanor charges Sunday and released the following day on his own recognizance.

“We are aware of the incident involving Alex Galchenyuk and strongly condemn this type of behavior,” the team said in a statement Friday. “Once the Club was made aware of the allegations, we immediately began the process of terminating his Standard Player’s Contract through the proper channels in conjunction with the National Hockey League.

“As a result, the Arizona Coyotes today have exercised the team’s right to terminate the contract of Alex Galchenyuk due to a material breach of the terms of his Standard Player’s Contract. The Club will have no further comment at this time.”

The Coyotes placed Galchenyuk on unconditional waivers Thursday. The NHLPA told ESPN it will review Arizona’s decision on behalf of Galchenyuk, who once again becomes an unrestricted free agent.

Galchenyuk signed a one-year, $775,000 deal on the first day of free agency on July 1. He previously played for the Coyotes in 2018-19 and 2021-22.

The No. 3 overall pick in the 2012 draft by Montreal, Galchenyuk registered no points in 11 games last season with the Colorado Avalanche. He has 354 points (146 goals, 208 assists) in 654 games with seven teams.

PGA News: Lucas Glover stays on top at Barbasol Championship

0

Lucas Glover shot a 68 on Friday to maintain a two-shot lead at the Barbasol Championship in Nicholasville, Ky.

At 13-under 131 through two days at Keene Trace Golf Club, Glover has a comfortable but not insurmountable margin over Adam Long (67 Friday), Sweden’s Vincent Norrman (67) and England’s Daniel Brown (68).

After a torrid 63 put him atop the leaderboard after one round, Glover had more work to do Friday. Starting on the back nine, he had 11 pars and two birdies through his first 13 holes before collecting three birdies and his lone bogey of the day over the final five.

“It was a little scrappy today, but hung in there, got around through 4 and knew I had a couple par-5s I could to get to and just said, ‘Let’s just grind this out,’ and I did,” Glover said. “Pleased with the end result.”

The former U.S. Open champion, now 43, has four career wins on the PGA Tour. He went 10 years between his last two wins (2011 and 2021).

Friday marked his 10th straight round on tour in the 60s.

“This time of year on tour when it’s warm, scores usually get low because things get soft, especially the greens, so you know automatically you’ve got to be more aggressive,” Glover said.

Long and Norrman each got to 67 by carding seven birdies and two bogeys, while Brown had six and two, respectively. Norrman and Brown have yet to win on the PGA Tour, but Long had his breakthrough on tour when he won the 2019 Desert Classic.

“Going up against some of the best players in the world here, so going to have to keep the pedal down, make a lot of birdies and keep attacking,” said Long, who added that he is playing through neck pain.

The Barbasol is staged as an alternate event opposite the Genesis Scottish Open, where most of the best players in the world are tuning up for next week’s Open Championship.
