NHL News: NHL roundup: Adrian Kempe (4 goals), Kings pound Penguins

Adrian Kempe scored four consecutive goals between the second and third periods as the Los Angeles Kings returned from their All-Star break in style by rolling past the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins 6-0 on Saturday.

Jaret Anderson-Dolan and Alex Iafallo each scored goals as the Kings won in their first game since Jan. 31, when they closed a six-game road trip with a 5-4 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.

Kempe became the first player in Kings history to score four consecutive goals in a game, while Los Angeles goalie Pheonix Copley made 25 saves one day after he agreed to a one-year contract extension. It was Copley’s first shutout of the season.

The Penguins were shut out for the first time this season. Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby saw his nine-game points streak come to an end, leaving with just over 10 minutes remaining when he was given a game misconduct after he was cross checked by the Kings’ Mikey Anderson.

Rangers 6, Hurricanes 2

Artemi Panarin scored four goals to lead New York to a win against Carolina in Raleigh, N.C.

Panarin, who entered the game with 199 career NHL goals, scored three straight as the Rangers rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win their fifth straight game. It was Panarin’s first four-goal game, and he added an assist. Jaroslav Halak made 27 saves and won his seventh straight start. Mika Zibanejad scored his 27th goal, Kaapo Kakko also found the net and Vincent Trocheck and Jimmy Vesey each added two assists.

Teuvo Teravainen and Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored for the Hurricanes, who had won seven straight, but were playing their first game since the All-Star break. Frederik Andersen made 13 saves. Carolina’s Sebastian Aho saw his six-game goal streak end.

Blues 6, Coyotes 5 (OT)

Ryan O’Reilly scored the winning goal 1:02 into overtime to lift St. Louis past visiting Arizona.

Calle Rosen scored twice for St. Louis and Brandon Saad, Sammy Blais and Robert Thomas also scored. Jordan Kyrou and Brayden Schenn each had two assists and Jordan Binnington made 23 saves. Clayton Keller had two goals and one assist for the Coyotes, who extended their point streak to five games (2-0-3) after erasing a three-goal deficit in the third period.

Keller cut the deficit to 5-3 at 9:47 of the third with a bad-angle goal from the left corner. Nick Schmaltz set up Nick Bjugstad for a power-play goal, then Lawson Crouse tied it at 5-5 with less than a minute left from the slot after Arizona pulled Vejmelka.

Canadiens 4, Islanders 3 (OT)

Mike Matheson scored with 20.2 seconds left in overtime to lift Montreal to the victory against visiting New York.

Matheson scored on a rebound after Semyon Varlamov made a save on Mike Hoffman’s breakaway. After a long offsides review, the game-winner was upheld. Nick Suzuki, Justin Barron and Kirby Dach also scored, Hoffman had three assists, and Sam Montembeault made 27 saves for the Canadiens.

Brock Nelson had a goal and an assist to extend his career-high point streak to 10 games for the Islanders. Bo Horvat scored for the third straight game and Varlamov made 27 saves for New York.

Oilers 6, Senators 3

Connor McDavid collected a goal and two assists, helping Edmonton extend its point streak to 11 games with the win against host Ottawa.

Edmonton, which hasn’t lost in regulation since Jan. 9, scored three goals in the third period to improve to 9-0-2 in its past 11 games.

The Senators had a four-game winning streak snapped in their first contest back from the All-Star break.

Capitals 2, Bruins 1

Nicklas Backstrom and Garnet Hathaway scored a goal apiece to lead Washington past host Boston in both teams’ first game following the All-Star break.

Washington earned its first regulation win since Jan. 19 but has won three of its last four games. Hathaway’s game-winning goal came in the second period. He has tallied in two straight contests for the first time this season. Washington’s Darcy Kuemper made 27 saves, stopping all 10 shots he faced in the third period.

A late penalty gave Boston a 6-on-4 advantage for the final 25.5 seconds with goaltender Jeremy Swayman pulled. Nick Foligno scored and Swayman made 21 saves for Boston, which is 2-3-1 in a six-game span. Swayman had gone 7-0-3 in his previous 10 starts, but it was his first action since Jan. 28.

Flames 7, Sabres 2

Jakob Pelletier scored his first NHL goal to spark a four-goal second period, and Dillon Dube scored once in his first career four-point game as visiting Calgary scored seven unanswered goals en route to the victory over Buffalo.

Tyler Toffoli scored twice and added an assist, while Dennis Gilbert and Nazem Kadri both collected one goal and one assist and Mikael Backlund added a single. Goaltender Jacob Markstrom made 21 saves.

Tage Thompson and Casey Middelstadt scored for the Sabres in their first game back after the All-Star break. Goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stopped 33 shots.

Lightning 3, Stars 1

Anthony Cirelli completed a two-goal performance by scoring with 43.2 seconds remaining in regulation to boost visiting Tampa Bay to a win over Dallas.

Victor Hedman’s assist on the game-winner gave him 500 for his career, becoming the second active Swedish defenseman to hit the milestone. Erik Karlsson of the San Jose Sharks has 560 assists.

For Dallas, captain Jamie Benn produced an unassisted goal in the second period. Scott Wedgewood made 28 saves in his first appearance since blanking the Los Angeles Kings 4-0 on Jan. 19.

Predators 2, Flyers 1 (OT)

Matt Duchene scored 34 seconds into overtime to lift Nashville to a victory over host Philadelphia.

Duchene also had an assist on Nino Niederreiter’s goal in the second period for the Predators, who lost leading scorer Filip Forsberg to an undisclosed injury at the end of the first. Predators goaltender Juuse Saros made 23 saves.

Kevin Hayes scored the lone goal and Carter Hart made 23 saves for the Flyers, who fell to 1-9 in overtime this season. Philadelphia never possessed the puck in overtime.

Blue Jackets 4, Maple Leafs 3

Kent Johnson scored a go-ahead goal early in the third period, and visiting Columbus came back from a first-period, two-goal deficit to defeat Toronto.

Johnson also had an assist, and both Boone Jenner and Kirill Marchenko tallied a goal and an assist for the Blue Jackets. Sean Kuraly also scored, while
Elvis Merzlikins made 27 saves. The teams split a two-game home-and-home series. Toronto won 3-0 at Columbus on Friday.

William Nylander had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs. Michael Bunting and Morgan Rielly also scored, and Mitchell Marner added two assists. Joseph Woll, making his first start of the season for Toronto, stopped 36 shots.

Avalanche 5, Panthers 3

Nathan MacKinnon scored two goals and had one assist, leading Colorado to a win over Florida in Sunrise, Fla.

Logan O’Connor, Matt Nieto and Devon Toews also scored for the Avalanche, who snapped a two-game losing streak. Mikko Rantanen and J.T. Compher each had two assists. Alexandar Georgiev made 42 saves and improved his record to 21-12-3.

Aaron Ekblad, Sam Bennett and Aleksander Barkov scored for the Panthers, who had their three-game winning streak broken. Florida cut its deficit to 4-3 at 11:03 of the third as Barkov tapped in the puck on a great pass from Reinhart. MacKinnnon’s empty-net goal with 59 seconds left sealed the victory for the Panthers.

Wild 3, Devils 2 (SO)

Mats Zuccarello and Frederick Gaudreau each scored in a shootout as Minnesota snapped a three-game losing streak with a victory over New Jersey in Saint Paul, Minn.

Zuccarello started the shootout by firing a wrist shot through the pads of Devils goalie Vitek Vanecek. Minnesota goaltender Filip Gustavsson then made a pad save on a wrist shot by Tomas Tatar. After Vanecek made a pad save on Kirill Kaprizov, Gustavsson made a toe save on Jesper Bratt’s attempt by the left post, setting the stage for Gaudreau’s game-winner which came on a wrist shot into the top right corner.

Ryan Hartman and Joel Eriksson Ek scored for Minnesota, while Gustavsson finished with 27 saves. Tatar scored twice for New Jersey, which had a three-game winning streak snapped. Vanecek stopped 22 of 24 shots but had his career-best personal 10-game winning streak ended.

Jets 4, Blackhawks 1

Blake Wheeler had two goals and an assist and Josh Morrissey also scored and added a helper as Winnipeg returned from the All-Star break with a win at home over Chicago.

Mark Scheifele was the other goal scorer for the Jets, while Connor Hellebuyck made 31 saves. Tyler Johnson had the lone goal for Chicago. Petr Mrazek stopped 24 of 27 shots.

Chicago controlled most of the opening frame after hosting Arizona Friday night, with the Jets slowly getting back into their groove after coming off a break that saw eleven days between games.

Red Wings 5, Canucks 2

Dylan Larkin had two goals and an assist to lead host Detroit past Vancouver.

Jonatan Berggren scored two goals, Filip Hronek scored a goal, and Ben Chiarot had two assists for the Red Wings.

NHL News: Adrian Kempe scores 4 goals in Kings’ rout of Penguins

Pittsburgh goalie Casey DeSmith, starting for the second consecutive night, allowed three goals on 15 shots before he was pulled after Kempe’s first goal at 1:58 of the second period. Dustin Tokarski entered, gave up Kempe’s second goal just over three minutes later and finished with 13 saves.

Los Angeles started fast, getting Anderson-Dolan’s seventh goal of the season just 2:28 into the game off a deflection. Iafallo scored at 17:47 of the opening period on a shot from close range.

Kempe’s first goal, to chase DeSmith from the game, came on a hard shot from the left circle and he followed that with a blast from the right circle at 5:18 of the period. He earned his third-career hat trick after picking up a loose puck and lifting it over Tokarski’s left pad.

Kempe’s fourth goal, and 26th of the season, came with just under five minutes remaining.

Three Kempe goals came on primary assists from Anze Kopitar, who reached 30 assists for the 16th time in his 17 seasons. Rasmus Kupari, Kevin Fiala and Drew Doughty each had two assists for Los Angeles.

NHL News: Jets return from All-Star break with energy, coast by Blackhawks

Blake Wheeler had two goals and an assist and Josh Morrissey also scored and added a helper as the Winnipeg Jets returned from the All-Star break with a 4-1 win at home over the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday night.

Winnipeg struck first at 1:16 of the second period. Morrissey took the puck off the boards and danced in from the top corner of the circle, putting the puck into the net off his backhand.

The Jets built their lead to 2-0 with 12:27 remaining in the second period. During a four-minute high-sticking penalty by Chicago’s Sam Lafferty on Winnipeg’s Nate Schmidt, Kyle Connor put the puck on net from a distance, and it was tipped home by Wheeler. Morrissey picked up the secondary assist.

Winnipeg kept the offense flowing. The Jets went up 3-0 when Scheifele finished off a beautiful bit of tic-tac-toe with Wheeler and Nikolaj Ehlers with 7:51 left on the middle frame’s clock.

Chicago was finally able to capitalize as the game entered its final stanza. Johnson ended up on his knees, diving to slide the puck into the net only 2:08 into the third period to give Chicago a bit of a restored heartbeat. Jake McCabe and Jason Dickinson assisted on the goal.

That goal by the Blackhawks came too late, however, as the Jets smothered them as the seconds ticked away.

Wheeler put the puck into the empty cage with 25 seconds left in regulation to seal the victory.

It was Chicago’s fourth loss of the season to Winnipeg, an opponent it has been outscored 18-4 against.

Video Clip of Schoolgirl Approached by Migrant Triggers Violence Outside British Hotel for Asylum Seekers/ Video Screengrab

Fury over an online video of a schoolgirl who claimed she was sexually harassed by a 25-year-old man allegedly staying at the hostel led to a violent riot outside a migrant hotel last night. The 15-year-old, who was wearing a school uniform, was asked for her phone number in the video clip. The adolescent asked the bearded man his age while recording the conversation on her cell phone.

She retorted, “You don’t do this in this country,” in response to his response that he was 25. She said that he could go to jail. According to reports, the video was shot on Tuesday in Kirkby, Merseyside, two miles away from the Suites Hotel, which houses asylum seekers. Far-Right activists who claimed the man was staying at the hotel and called the migrants who were staying their “scum” retweeted the clip, which received 150,000 views on Twitter.

The girl’s mother reported that she had panic attacks when she got home, considering what might have happened. She has been greatly impacted by it, and no child should ever have to experience what she had.

In an initially peaceful protest and counterprotest on Friday night near Knowsley, near Liverpool in north-west England, people asked for the migrants to be sent back, because this was their own country. The protests then turned violent, according to British police on Saturday. Injuries were sustained and a police van was damaged during a crowd protest outside of a hotel that housed asylum seekers.

Outside the Knowsley hotel, protesters reportedly threw lit fireworks at police officers. They also allegedly attacked a Matrix police van with hammers before torching it, as seen in videos posted by multiple outlets. Offenders also threw missiles, including lit fireworks, at police officers, according to police.

Several people who showed up were determined to use a planned protest as an excuse to engage in violent and despicable behavior, according to Chief Constable Serena Kennedy. They arrived equipped to create as much havoc as they could, and their actions could have seriously injured or killed members of the public and police officers. Suella Braverman, the home secretary, stated that the “alleged behavior of some asylum seekers” was never a justification for violence.

NFL News: Ravens DE Calais Campbell returning for 16th season

Baltimore Ravens defensive end Calais Campbell said Sunday he will return in 2023 for a 16th NFL season.

“Coming back, baby,” he told NFL Network while working as part of its extensive Super Bowl LVII pregame coverage.

A six-time Pro Bowl selection and a 2017 All-Pro, Campbell was named to the Hall of Fame’s All-2010s team. He won the 2019 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award.

Now 36, Campbell was a second-round draft pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 2008. He played for the team through the 2016 season then signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as a free agent.

The Jaguars traded him to the Ravens in March 2020 for a fifth-round draft pick.

In 227 career games (208 starts), Campbell has 809 tackles (165 for loss), 237 quarterback hits, 99 sacks, three interceptions, 57 passes defensed, 16 forced fumbles and 12 fumble recoveries.

In 2022, he made 36 tackles (four for loss) and had 14 quarterback hits, 5.5 sacks and two forced fumbles.

NFL News: Report: Texans to hire Bobby Slowik as OC

The Houston Texans are hiring Bobby Slowik as their offensive coordinator, NFL Network reported Sunday morning.

Slowik and new Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans spent the past six seasons together with the San Francisco 49ers.

Former Arizona Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury also interviewed with the Texans for the role of offensive coordinator. The position was vacant after Houston opted against retaining Pep Hamilton after finishing 31st in total offense (283.5 yards per game) and tied for 30th in scoring offense (17.0 points) last season.

Slowik, 35, began his NFL coaching career as a video assistant and defensive assistant with the Washington franchise from 2011-13. He later joined the 49ers as a defense quality control coach in 2017 before becoming an offensive assistant in 2019.

Slowik was promoted to San Francisco’s offensive passing game specialist in 2021 and named the passing game coordinator in 2022.

NFL News: Cardinals, Colts move closer to hiring head coaches

The Arizona Cardinals and Indianapolis Colts look poised to move toward filling their vacant head coaching jobs, post Super Bowl.

Multiple reports Sunday said the Cardinals are expected to interview Philadelphia defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, 40, as early as Monday. Gannon, whose Eagles are playing in Super Bowl LVII, is the architect of an impressive defense that in 2022 registered a league-high 70 sacks and held opponents to 20.2 points per game.

ESPN said the other candidates still vying for the job are New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka and Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo.

Gannon’s NFL coaching career began in 2007 with the Atlanta Falcons when he served as defensive quality control coach, and he’s also worked with the Minnesota Vikings and was the defensive backs coach of the Colts before being hired in Philadelphia in 2021.

As for the Colts, ESPN reported Sunday that the Eagles’ other coordinator — offensive guru Shane Steichen — is expected to be named as the replacement for Frank Reich and interim coach Jeff Saturday.

Per the report, the Colts notified the other candidates Sunday morning that they had chosen to go in another direction. The final candidates were Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, Green Bay Packers special teams coach Rich Bisaccia and Saturday, NFL Network reported.

Saturday was 1-7 as the Colts’ interim coach.

The Eagles’ offense ranked first in the league in rushing touchdowns, and the team’s 477 points scored ranked second only to the Kansas City Chiefs — their Super Bowl opponent.

Steichen, 37, joined the Eagles in 2021. He previously held a variety of coaching roles with the Los Angeles Chargers and was offensive coordinator for one season (2020).

These two openings are the final head coach jobs to be filled this offseason. The Carolina Panthers hired Reich, the Denver Broncos tabbed Sean Payton and the Houston Texans landed DeMeco Ryans.

NFL News: Report: Broncos interview Rex Ryan for DC position

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton interviewed Rex Ryan for the team’s defensive coordinator position last week, FOX Sports reported Sunday morning.

FOX Sports had the inside track on that story given Payton is concluding his responsibilities with the network on Sunday.

The Broncos recently let defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero out of his contract to pursue other opportunities. He assumed the same position with the Carolina Panthers.

Ryan, 60, currently works for ESPN as an analyst after a career in which he served as the head coach of the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills.

After various coaching roles with the Baltimore Ravens from 1999-2008, Ryan took over as head coach of the Jets in 2009 and was at the helm until 2014. He then spent two seasons with the Bills and was relieved of his duties as head coach following the 2016 campaign.

In his eight seasons as a head coach, Ryan compiled a 61-66 regular-season record and led his teams to a 4-2 mark in the playoffs. He also helped the Ravens to victory in Super Bowl XXXV as the team’s defensive line coach.

While Payton and Ryan have yet to work together, the former worked with the latter’s twin brother. Rob Ryan was the New Orleans Saints’ defensive coordinator from 2013-15.

NFL News: Chiefs drawing game-day support, Eagles favored in Super Bowl LVII

After the Chiefs opened as a +110 underdog at DraftKings and BetMGM, oddsmakers are a bit more confident that Kansas City can win its second title in four seasons when it faces the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII on Sunday.

Just hours before opening kickoff in Glendale, Ariz., the Chiefs went to +100 at both books after previously being listed at +105 on Saturday.

The Kansas City moneyline accounted for just over half of the bets (51 percent) placed on an outright winner, also making up 56 percent of the handle at DraftKings. BetMGM revealed similar action — 59 percent of the bets are on Chiefs moneyline — and 52 percent of the outright winner market handle.

The spread for the game has shifted only slightly in the two weeks since the opening line was released with Philadelphia as 2.5-point favorites on BetMGM and a 2-point favorite at DraftKings after the conference championship games.

As of Sunday morning, the Eagles are favored by 1.5 points as a virtual consensus with BetMGM, DraftKings, Caesars and BetRivers posting an identical line.

The point total opened at 49.5 on Jan. 29 and is up slightly. DraftKings offered a 50.5 total on Monday, and 54 percent of bettors took the over. Since then, the total has gone up a half-point to 51. As of Sunday morning, 57 percent of the money was on the over.

BetMGM bettors are more confident the teams will put up points; 59 percent were riding on the over at 50.5 on Saturday, which increased to 61 percent by Sunday morning.

Philadelphia and Kansas City had no problem scoring this season. The Chiefs led the NFL in that category in the regular season (29.2) and the Eagles put up the third most points per game at 28.1.

Two of the main contributors to their respective team’s success have been quarterbacks Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes, who are currently the frontrunners to take home Super Bowl MVP honors.

Hurts (+120) was the favorite to take home the award over on DraftKings, while Mahomes (+125) was a close second on Feb. 4. Since then, the quarterbacks swapped places, and Mahomes sits at +120 while Hurts was at +135.

Line movement regarding the MVP race over on BetMGM has been staggering. Hurts opened at +650, went down to +135 by Tuesday and is now listed at +140, while Mahomes opened +400 and moved to +135 by Tuesday before settling into his current odds at +130.

One of BetMGM’s most-bet rushing props as of Tuesday was Miles Sanders’ rushing total, which was set at 59.5 yards (-115). The line has now moved to 61.5 yards, with the over at -110 and the under at -120.

As of last Sunday, Mahomes to throw for over 1.5 touchdowns was the player prop with the most bets at DraftKings. The line was -210 at the time, but Mahomes’ TD total jumped to 2.5, and the odds were posted at +170.

A bettor over at BetMGM made a potential splashy wager on Tuesday, putting $1 million on the Eagles to win the Super Bowl at -125 odds.

NFL News: Reports: Vic Fangio aiding Eagles’ prep for Super Bowl

Soon-to-be Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has been helping the Philadelphia Eagles prepare for Super Bowl LVII.

Multiple media outlets reported on Sunday morning that Fangio signed a two-week contract with the Eagles after the team defeated the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game. He officially will sign a three-year contract with the Dolphins this week.

Fangio has spent time with the Eagles’ coaching staff and players at the Philadelphia team hotel in Arizona, according to reports. He also has recent working knowledge of the Chiefs, whom he faced twice a season while serving as the head coach of the AFC West-rival Denver Broncos.

Fangio, 64, was 19-30 in three seasons with the Broncos from 2019-21. Denver was 0-6 against the Chiefs those three seasons.

Before he became a head coach for the first time with the Broncos, he spent 19 seasons as an NFL defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers (1995-98), Indianapolis Colts (1999-2001), Houston Texans (2002-05), 49ers (2011-14) and Chicago Bears (2015-18). He was also the defensive coordinator at Stanford in 2010.

The Dolphins are reportedly set to pay Fangio more than $4 million per season to replace fired defensive coordinator Josh Boyer on Jan. 19 after three seasons.
