Josh Hart’s 3 at buzzer caps rally as Blazers beat Heat

Josh Hart swished a left-corner 3-pointer at the buzzer as the visiting Portland Trail Blazers defeated the Miami Heat 110-107 on Monday night.

Miami’s Max Strus had tied the score at 107 with a contested 3-pointer with 6.2 seconds left. But the Blazers raced down court, and Damian Lillard passed the ball to Hart for the game-winner.

Portland’s Anfernee Simons scored a game-high 25 points. Jerami Grant finished with 23 points, and Lillard had 19 points and six assists.

Hart finished with 12 points and eight assists.

Miami blew a 15-point second-half lead.

Heat forward Jimmy Butler, returning from a two-game absence, produced 16 points, seven assists, six steals and four rebounds. He had been out due to a sore left hip.

The Heat, who were opening a four-game homestand, had seven players in double-figure scoring. Bam Adebayo tied Hart and Butler for scoring honors with 16 points and Kyle Lowry added eight assists.

However, Miami’s Tyler Herro, who has a sprained left ankle, missed his first game of the season. He is Miami’s second-leading scorer at 19.6 points per game.

Lillard and Simons both returned from injuries. Lillard, who was averaging 31 points before missing four straight games due to a strained right calf.

Simons was averaging 22 points before missing two straight games due to a foot injury.

Ex-Heat forward Justise Winslow scored 12 points on 6-for-8 shooting off the bench.

Grant scored 10 points in a first quarter that finished tied at 28. Both teams shot 45 percent from the floor.

Miami took a 60-53 lead at halftime as Duncan Robinson scored nine points on 3-for-5 shooting, all from long range, in the second quarter.

The Heat stretched their lead to 81-73 at the end of the third quarter. Miami’s Caleb Martin led all scorers in the period with eight points.

In the fourth, Lillard passed to Grant for a 3-pointer to give Portland a 105-104 lead with 29.3 seconds left.

After Adebayo got called for an offensive foul, Simons made two free throws with 8.5 seconds left, giving Portland a 107-104 lead.

NFL News: Ravens soar by Saints to win third straight

Kenyan Drake rushed for two touchdowns and Lamar Jackson passed for one as the Baltimore Ravens won their third consecutive game by defeating the host New Orleans Saints 27-13 on Monday night.

Jackson completed 12 of 22 passes for 133 yards and rushed 11 times for 82 yards, finishing 11 yards shy of Drake’s team-leading total, as the Ravens (6-3) possessed the ball for 37:47 of the game.

The Baltimore defense was bolstered by the debut of linebacker Roquan Smith, who was acquired in a trade with Chicago last week, and the activation of linebacker Tyus Bowser, who hadn’t played this season because of an Achilles injury. It kept the Saints (3-6) out of the end zone for more than 55 minutes and limited them to 243 total yards, including just 48 rushing.

The Ravens held running back Alvin Kamara, who had 158 yards of total offense and three touchdowns in a victory against Las Vegas last week, to 30 yards on nine rushes and 32 yards on three receptions.

Andy Dalton passed for 210 yards, completing 19 of 29 passes.

On the first possession of the third quarter, the Ravens drove to Justin Tucker’s 32-yard field goal that increased their lead to 17-3.

On the ensuing possession, Wil Lutz’s 33-yard field goal trimmed the lead to 17-6 by the end of the third quarter.

Tucker added a 41-yard field goal with 8:31 remaining and on the first play of the following possession, Justin Houston intercepted Dalton, setting up Drake’s 3-yard touchdown run.

Dalton threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Juwan Johnson with 4:13 left.

Jackson threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Likely to give Baltimore a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Drake’s 1-yard touchdown run increased the lead to 14-0 before Lutz kicked a 33-yard field goal on the last play of the half to cut the lead to 14-3 at halftime.

Dejounte Murray, Hawks hand Bucks first loss of season

Dejounte Murray took over the reins for injured Trae Young and finished with 25 points and 11 assists Monday night as the host Atlanta Hawks handed the Milwaukee Bucks their first loss of the season, 117-98.

Rookie AJ Griffin, who had 23 points combined in his first five NBA games, came off the bench to score 24, helping the Hawks win their third straight and avenge an earlier loss at Milwaukee.

Giannis Antetokounmpo matched Murray with 25 points for the Bucks, the last of the unbeatens whose 9-0 start had equaled the 14th-longest season-opening winning streak in NBA history.

Despite the late news that Young would have to sit out with a bruised right shin and an early 21-8 Bucks flurry powered by three Grayson Allen 3-pointers, the Hawks rallied within 58-52 at halftime before dominating the second half.

John Collins had a 3-pointer and three free throws as Atlanta opened the third quarter with a 12-2 run to take the lead, which the hosts extended to 89-80 by period’s end.

In a matchup with his brother Jrue, Justin Holiday then combined with Griffin for 14 points in a 19-6 burst to open the fourth quarter and break the game open at 108-86.

Murray added eight rebounds and three steals for the Hawks, who lost 123-115 at Milwaukee on Oct. 29.

Griffin made 10 of 15 shots as the Hawks shot 46.5 percent. The Bucks shot 41.4 percent.

Collins and Justin Holiday finished with 14 points apiece for Atlanta, while Onyeka Okongwu had 12 and De’Andre Hunter 10. Clint Capela grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to complement five points.

Reserve Bobby Portis backed Antetokounmpo with 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Bucks, who were playing just their third road game of the season and were opening a three-game trip.

Jrue Holiday had 16 points, while Allen and Brook Lopez added 11 apiece.

MLB News: Angels add three coaches to Phil Nevin’s staff

The Los Angeles Angels hired three new coaches for the staff of manager Phil Nevin, including new hitting coach Marcus Thames.

Phil Plantier was hired as an assistant hitting coach, while Bill Hezel was brought aboard as an assistant pitching coach. Nevin, who was named interim manager after Joe Maddon was fired in June, was retained last month on a one-year deal.

Thames will replace Jeremy Reed, who was let go as the team’s hitting coach last month. Assistant hitting coach John Mallee also was fired.

The club also intends to keep former major league coaches Dom Chiti (bullpen) and Mike Gallego (third base), although both will be reassigned.

The Angels have yet to announce a replacement for Gallego.

Thames, 45, played 10 seasons in the major leagues with six of those for the Detroit Tigers. He was a career .246 hitter with 115 home runs and 301 RBIs in 640 major league games.

Plantier, 53, played eight seasons with five different teams, including four seasons with his hometown San Diego Padres. Neither Thames nor Plantier played in the major leagues with the Angels.

Thames arrives after serving as the Miami Marlins’ hitting coach in 2022. He was also on the New York Yankees coaching staff with Nevin. Plantier was the Padres’ hitting coach from 2012-14.

MLB News: Twins pick up $12.7M option on RHP Sonny Gray

The Minnesota Twins exercised their 2023 club option on right-hander Sonny Gray.

He will earn $12.7 million next season.

Also Monday, shortstop Carlos Correa, as expected, opted out of his contract, and the Twins declined their 2023 club options on right-handed pitchers Chris Archer and Dylan Bundy, as well as infielder Miguel Sano.

Gray, 33, started 24 games in Minnesota, his first season with the Twins. He finished 8-5 with a 3.08 ERA, 117 strikeouts and 36 walks in 119 2/3 innings pitched. Acquired in a trade with Cincinnati in March, Gray has a 90-77 record and 3.56 ERA in 247 career games (238 starts) with the Oakland Athletics (2013-17), New York Yankees (2017-18), Reds (2019-21) and Twins.

Correa, 28, hit .291 with 22 HRs and 64 RBIs in his only season with the Twins. He spent his first seven seasons with the Houston Astros before signing a three-year, $105.3 million deal with Minnesota this offseason. The contract contained two player opt-out years.

Archer, 34, was 2-8 with a 4.56 ERA in 25 starts for the Twins in 2022.

Bundy, 29, started a team-leading 29 games and was 8-8 with a 4.89 ERA.

MLB News: Yankees exercise RHP Luis Severino’s $15M option for 2023

As team president Brian Cashman promised, the New York Yankees exercised their 2023 option on right-hander Luis Severino, who will be paid $15 million next season.

Severino, 28, signed a four-year contract in 2018 worth $40 million plus the team option for 2023. He becomes a free agent after the World Series next November.

In his first full season since Tommy John surgery in 2020, Severino missed time due to a lat injury that forced him to the 60-day injured list.

He made 19 regular-season starts with a 3.18 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over 102 innings, with 112 strikeouts in 2022.

Cashman said last week it was an “easy decision” to pick up Severino’s option.

Twice a top-10 finalist for the American League Cy Young Award before his injury, Severino turns 29 in February and has pitched a total of 120 innings since his surgery.

The Yankees have Severino, right-hander Gerrit Cole, All-Star left-hander Nestor Cortes and Frankie Montas under contract for 2023.

Montas, 29, is returning from a shoulder injury that limited his availability following New York’s move to bring him on board from the Oakland Athletics at the trade deadline.

NHL News: Evgeny Kuznetsov’s 4-point night helps Caps end slide vs. Oilers

Evgeny Kuznetsov had two goals and two assists to help the Washington Capitals end a four-game losing streak with a 5-4 win against the visiting Edmonton Oilers on Monday night.

Dylan Strome had two goals and an assist, Erik Gustafsson had three assists and Alex Ovechkin had a goal and an assist. Charlie Lindgren made 25 saves for the Capitals.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored two goals, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl each had a goal and an assist and Stuart Skinner made 26 saves in his fifth start of the season for the Oilers, who have lost three in a row.

Draisaitl scored for the fourth straight game at 2:54 of the third period to pull the Oilers within 4-3.

Kuznetsov scored off a 2-on-1 on a power play to make it 5-3 with 1:51 left. Nugent-Hopkins scored with 1:06 left to cut it to 5-4, but Edmonton couldn’t add the game-tying goal after that.

Strome gave the Capitals a 1-0 lead with 1:45 left in the opening period. Strome stole the puck from Oilers forward Warren Foegele in the Edmonton zone and skated in alone on Skinner for the goal.

Strome scored again while on a power play 26 seconds into the second period for a 2-0 lead. Kuznetsov sent a pass to Strome at the front of the net, and the puck redirected off Strome’s body and into the net.

McDavid, playing in his 500th NHL game, made it 2-1 at 8:33 of the second period, weaving through the defense before beating Lindgren from in close for his NHL-leading 13th goal of the season.

McDavid extended his point streak to seven games (eight goals, nine assists).

The Capitals had a 5-on-3 power play for 1:51 and Kuznetsov redirected a pass through the seam to extend the lead to 3-1 at 12:25 of the second.

It was Kuznetsov’s first goal in his past 18 regular-season games dating to last season.

Nugent-Hopkins redirected a centering pass from Zach Hyman off a rush to cut the lead to 3-2 at 14:10 of the second, but the Capitals went right back on the power play and Ovechkin scored 26 seconds later with a wrist shot from the left circle to extend the lead to 4-2.

NHL News: Bruins get back on winning track, topple Blues

Patrice Bergeron and Trent Frederic scored third-period goals to lift the Boston Bruins past the visiting St. Louis Blues 3-1 on Monday night.

Bergeron’s power-play goal at 12:45 of the final frame broke a 1-1 tie before Frederic tallied at 16:28, helping the Bruins bounce back from a Saturday loss in Toronto that snapped a seven-game win streak.

Brad Marchand assisted on Boston’s first two goals to log his second multiple-point game of the season.

Jake DeBrusk also scored for Boston while Linus Ullmark (25 saves) earned his ninth win in 10 starts.

The Bruins had a 37-26 shots advantage.

Brayden Schenn scored the lone goal and Jordan Binnington made 34 saves for the Blues, who have lost all of their last seven games in regulation.

The Blues received three power plays within the first 10:49, but they landed just three shots on Ullmark during that entire span.

It took the Bruins only 17 seconds on the man advantage to mark the scoreboard first. DeBrusk whipped a wrist shot home after taking David Pastrnak’s backhand feed, scoring at the net front at 13:34 of the first period.

To begin the second, St. Louis had the better of the chances with a 6-2 edge in the shot department before netting the tying goal at the 11:37 marker. Schenn buried Jordan Kyrou’s pass in the low slot to finish off a tic-tac-toe passing sequence.

Ullmark kept the game tied with 4:28 left in the middle frame, denying Kyrou’s backhand attempt on a partial breakaway. It was one of the Boston goaltender’s eight saves in the second.

Boston nearly jumped ahead when David Krejci ripped a slapper off the goalpost exactly three minutes later, taking Pastrnak’s feed in stride down the right side.

After Pastrnak was tripped to draw a power play, Bergeron slotted home a go-ahead goal from the bumper with 7:15 to play in regulation. Marchand fed a pass from the far-right circle.

Frederic skated from the defensive zone, through center and into the right circle, where he snapped off Boston’s insurance goal.
