NFL News: Jets’ ‘Hard Knocks’ season to debut Aug. 8

The New York Jets open training camp Wednesday, and it won’t take long for fans to get a look at Aaron Rodgers at the helm of Gang Green.

HBO and NFL Films announced Monday that “Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the New York Jets” will debut Aug. 8, the first of five episodes to run Tuesdays from 10-11 p.m. ET.

This is the 18th annual “Hard Knocks,” which featured the Jets under then-head coach Rex Ryan in 2010.

Although current head coach Robert Saleh said he didn’t want his team on the show, maybe it will bring the Jets good luck; the 2010 Jets advanced to the AFC Championship Game.

“NFL Films has a long and storied relationship with the Jets, from the early days of the AFL and Joe Namath’s ‘#1’ salute after Super Bowl III, to The Sack Exchange, and the team’s first appearance on Hard Knocks in the midst of back-to-back AFC Championship Game appearances,” Patrick Kelleher, executive producer of NFL Films, said in a news release. “The 2010 Jets changed the profile and the success of Hard Knocks forever. That Jets team made football fun for fans. And now we are excited for a new partnership with this iconic organization and HBO to create another chapter in both NFL and television history filled with great personalities and a roster striving to reach new heights of success.”

The final episode of this “Hard Knocks” will run Sept. 5, just days before the team’s Sept. 11 opener against AFC East rival Buffalo.

The Jets were 7-10 last season, their third consecutive last-place finish in the division. They have not made the playoffs since 2010.

CFL News: Dustin Crum, Redblacks hope for another big showing vs. Stamps

A 31-28 overtime win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers was one of the most stunning results in the Ottawa Redblacks’ history.

Ottawa trailed 25-6 after three quarters and was starting its third quarterback in five games. But Dustin Crum led the team to two touchdowns in the final three minutes of regulation and then ran 29 yards for the game-winner in overtime.

The Redblacks will try for an encore on Sunday in Calgary, where they play a Stampeders team coming off its own big win last week.

Ottawa (2-3) got 364 total yards from Crum, who threw for 261 and ran for 103. Crum rushed for a 12-yard touchdown on the final play of regulation and then connected with Nate Behar for a two-point conversion that forced overtime.

“I’m not going sideways, I’m going to go right through him,” Crum said of the scoring run to end regulation. “I wasn’t going to let it happen again. It was a whatever-it-takes mindset.”

Crum was stopped at the 2-yard line on the final play of regulation in the Redblacks’ previous game, a 21-13 loss two weeks ago at Hamilton. He relieved Jeremiah Masoli after the veteran sustained a season-ending Achilles tear in the second quarter.

Meanwhile, Calgary (2-3) got a road win it absolutely needed in Saskatchewan, holding off the Roughriders 33-31 as quarterback Jake Maier threw for 315 yards and a pair of touchdowns. A defeat would have given Saskatchewan the season series, which could have hurt the Stampeders’ playoff chances.

Calgary won despite another abysmal week on special teams. It permitted Mario Alford to run back two punts for touchdowns and has allowed seven punt returns of more than 30 yards, the most of any team in the CFL.

“We have to change, we have to find some different ways to get through,” Stampeders coach Dave Dickenson said. “We know CFL is a big field with a lot of returns. We had some nice returns ourselves, but when you’re at your best is when you’re dictating the pace of play and making him feel like he’s got to earn hard yards.”

Calgary and Ottawa played last month in Ottawa, with the Stampeders taking a 26-15 win.

0

Blazer5 Gaming rallied for a 2-1 win over 2-1 win over Pacers Gaming on Friday to advance to the championship match of the NBA 2K League’s The Turn event in Washington.

Hornets Venom GT swept 76ers GC 2-0 in the other semifinal, setting up a matchup with Blazer5 in the final on Saturday.

The other big winner on Friday was Pistons GT, who clinched a playoff berth in the Western Conference thanks to the Pacers’ loss. The Pacers would have had to capture the title at The Turn to sneak into the playoffs.

The Turn is one of three tournaments taking place during the NBA 2K League 5v5 season. The Tipoff, The Turn and The Ticket will set the field for the playoffs, scheduled for Aug. 2-5 in Washington. 76ers GC defeated T-Wolves Gaming to claim The Tipoff in June, and The Ticket takes place in late July.

Group- and bracket-play wins are each worth 10 points, with a win in The Turn final worth 30.

The top five teams in each conference at the conclusion of The Turn qualify for the playoffs. The remaining 15 teams will compete in The Ticket for the final two playoff berths.

On Friday, the Pacers won 51-49 in the opening game before Blazer5 came back with 82-68 and 71-66 victories. In the finale, Isaiah “Harby” Harbinson paced Blazer5 with 24 points while Claude “Claude” Knight added 19 points and seven assists. Kory “Chess” Taylor had a game-high 28 points for the Pacers.

Sun hope to pick up where they left off, take aim at Mercury

First-year coach Stephanie White and the thriving Connecticut Sun will open the second half of the season on the road Tuesday night against the struggling Phoenix Mercury.

While empowering veteran players like DeWanna Bonner and Alyssa Thomas to make decisions on their own in a fast-paced offense, White has also insisted on Connecticut (15-5) playing tough defense. That’s resulted in a league-high 8.2 steals per game, many fueling the Sun’s potent transition game.

“The biggest thing about being a coach who really encourages player feedback, it’s like you know this is bigger than our coaching staff,” White said. “It’s about them and making them feel comfortable and confident in everything that we do and them having a voice that gives them ownership.”

White, Bonner and Thomas have returned from Saturday’s All-Star Game in Las Vegas, where White coached Team Stewart to a 143-127 rout of Team Wilson. Thomas is playing MVP-caliber ball, averaging 15.1 points, 9.7 rebounds and 8.1 assists per game.

Meanwhile, Phoenix (4-15) is aiming to engineer a second-half turnaround under interim coach Nikki Blue. She took over when Vanessa Nygaard was canned after a 2-10 start but hasn’t yet been able to change the team’s sagging fortunes.

“We have all the pieces,” Mercury guard Sophie Cunningham said. “It’s just trying to get them to match at the right time.”

One of those pieces, center Brittney Griner, shined in the All-Star Game with 18 points, 13 rebounds and a first-quarter dunk. Griner, who missed the 2022 season while imprisoned in Russia, is averaging 19.5 points on 60.6 percent shooting from the field.

This is the first time this year the Sun and Mercury have met. Connecticut swept the season series 3-0 in 2022 with an average margin of victory of nearly 14 points.

Beginning with Tuesday’s contest, the Sun will play three of their next four games away from home, while Phoenix begins the second half with back-to-back home games ahead of a four-game road trip.

Report: No trade market for James Harden

For the third time in as many years, James Harden wants a change of scenery.

But he might not get it.

In late June, the 10-time All-Star opted into his $35.6 million player option for next season, allowing him to work together with the 76ers to find a way out of town.

In the weeks since — mostly crickets, according to Sports Illustrated.

Harden, 33, prefers to move west to the Los Angeles Clippers, who are reportedly interested — but not at the going asking price of Terance Mann and likely first-round draft picks.

The New York Knicks were another team initially expected to engage in potential trade discussions, according to multiple sources, but no action has come from that front.

“He’s wishing for a different situation contractually. … If we can do something that is win-win, helps the Sixers, then we will look at it. If we can’t, then we won’t,” Sixers general manager Daryl Morey said Tuesday during an interview with Philadelphia’s 97.5 FM.

Meanwhile, back at Harden’s current home, relationships have felt the effects of Harden’s request. After nearly a decade of working together, dating to their time in Houston, Harden and Morey are reportedly at odds.

When Harden wanted out of Houston in 2020, Morey sent him to his preferred destination of the Brooklyn Nets eight games into the season. After Morey had moved to the Sixers, he brought in Harden, who had demanded a trade from the Nets in 2022.

But now, “the relationship between James Harden and Daryl Morey is essentially severed, it’s essentially fractured throughout this process,” The Athletic reported.

For their part, the Sixers will continue to attempt to shop Harden.

“If we don’t get either a very good player or something that we can turn into a very good player then we’re just not going to do it,” Morey said. “At this moment he does prefer to be traded and we’re attempting to honor that.”

Harden averaged 21.0 points, 10.7 assists and 6.1 rebounds in 58 games this past season.

The 10-time All-Star owns career averages of 24.7 points, 7.0 assists and 5.6 rebounds in 1,000 games (786 starts) with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Rockets, Brooklyn Nets and 76ers.

Harden came to the Sixers in the deal that sent Ben Simmons, Seth Curry and Andre Drummond to the Brooklyn Nets.

MLB News: Astros’ Framber Valdez goes back to work vs. Angels

Houston Astros left-hander Framber Valdez has dominated the Los Angeles Angels in his two previous starts this season.

He’s scheduled to face them again on Saturday night in the middle contest of a three-game series in Anaheim, Calif., and he’ll be coming off six days of rest this time around.

Valdez (7-6, 2.51 ERA) hasn’t pitched since allowing two runs and five hits in six innings of 3-2 win against the Seattle Mariners last Saturday.

He was selected to the American League All-Star team, but he and manager Dusty Baker decided he would sit it out. He was replaced by Toronto Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano.

“You can’t risk Framber on two or three days’ rest for an exhibition game,” Baker said last Sunday. “I know it’s important, but our season is far more important than an All-Star Game. It’s an honor to maybe start, but if he keeps pitching in the groove he’s in, he’ll have three or four opportunities to start in the future. Right now, we’ve got to take care of Framber.”

Valdez outdueled Shohei Ohtani on May 9 in Anaheim, allowing one run and three hits in eight innings of the 3-1 victory. He beat the Angels again on June 2, shutting them out for seven innings in the 6-2 win in Houston.

He has made 17 appearances against the Angels in his career, including 13 starts, and is 9-4 with a 3.46 ERA.

The Angels plan to counter with left-hander Reid Detmers.

Like many of the Angels, Detmers was sharp in the month of June, going 1-1 in five starts with a 2.05 ERA.

Detmers (2-6, 4.31) was also solid in his first start of July, limiting the Arizona Diamondbacks to two runs in six innings. He took a step back in his most recent outing last Saturday, however, surrendering seven runs and six hits in 3 1/3 innings of a 10-5 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

He has made five career starts against the Astros and owns a 1-2 mark and 4.62 ERA.

The Angels had a few positives come out of their 7-5 loss to the Astros in the series opener on Friday night, their season-high sixth straight defeat.

Zach Neto returned after missing 21 games with an oblique strain and the Los Angeles shortstop drove in a run with a groundout.

Michael Stefanic was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday and he also delivered an RBI single in his first at-bat to give the Angels an early lead.

On the negative side, Angels manager Phil Nevin benched starting third baseman Luis Rengifo after he booted a high chopper from Jose Abreu in the fifth inning and then didn’t hustle after the ball, allowing another run to score and Abreu to reach second base.

“I’m never going to have a problem with mistakes,” Nevin said. “It’s what happens after the mistake. The next play is too damn important for our team, and for the player and for our fans, quite frankly, to let those plays affect us, and that’s what I thought happened on the Rengifo play.”
