NCAAF News: Reports: SMU QB Tanner Mordecai to transfer to Wisconsin

After two successful seasons at SMU, quarterback Tanner Mordecai entered the transfer portal on Thursday and is heading to Wisconsin, according to multiple reports.

Mordecai amassed 7,152 passing yards, 72 touchdowns and 22 interceptions in two seasons as the Mustangs’ starter, including 3,524 yards, 33 TDs and 10 picks in 2022. He was a semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien Award, awarded to the best college quarterback, in the past two seasons.

Before arriving at SMU, he was a backup at Oklahoma for three seasons.

Wisconsin hired Cincinnati coach Luke Fickell to take over the program after firing Paul Chryst in late September. Graham Mertz, the Badgers’ starting quarterback for the past three seasons, transferred to Florida earlier this month.

Fickell has already landed two quarterbacks through the portal, the first being former Oklahoma backup Nick Evers, who was a four-star prospect in the Class of 2022.

Class of 2024 four-star quarterback Mabrey Mettauer also committed to Fickell and the Badgers this month.

NCAAF News: Late FG lifts No. 13 Florida State past Oklahoma in Cheez-It Bowl

Jordan Travis threw for a career-high 418 yards and two touchdowns to lift No. 13 Florida State to a 35-32 victory over Oklahoma in the Cheez-It Bowl on Thursday in Orlando, Florida.

Travis hit Johnny Wilson for a 58-yard gain with less than three minutes remaining set up Ryan Fitzgerald’s 32-yard field goal with 55 seconds left to break a tie.

Florida State (10-3) finished with at least 10 wins for the first time since 2016. Oklahoma (6-7) wound up with a losing record for the first time since 1998.

Wilson had eight catches for 202 yards, and teammate Treshaun Ward gained 81 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries.

Jovantae Barnes ran for 108 yards and a score on 27 attempts for the Sooners, while freshman Gavin Sawchuk produced 100 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.

The Sooners jumped ahead early, scoring touchdowns on two of their first three drives.

First, Dillon Gabriel hit Jalil Farooq for a 22-yard touchdown to cap a 13-play, 75-yard drive.

But the Sooners — already down three starting offensive linemen — lost freshman starting tackle Jacob Sexton on the drive. He did not return.

Then on the first play of the second quarter, Gabriel finished off a drive with an 8-yard touchdown run to put the Sooners up 14-3.

Ontaria Wilson’s 16-yard touchdown reception was followed with a two-point conversion to pull Florida State within 14-11 midway through the second quarter.

The Sooners took a 17-11 lead into halftime after the Sooners drove 65 yards in the final two minutes before half and added a 41-yard Zach Schmit field goal in the closing seconds before half.

Florida State took its first lead since early in the first quarter on a 15-play, 94-yard drive in the third quarter, capped by Ward’s 1-yard touchdown run.

Oklahoma regained the lead early in the fourth on Sawchuk’s 15-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion put the Sooners up 25-18.

But the Seminoles quickly answered, as Ward broke off a 38-yard touchdown run to tie the game.

On the next drive, Jammie Robinson recovered Sawchuk’s fumble at the Florida State 32 to thwart the Sooners’ drive.

Travis hit Trey Benson for a 33-yard gain on the first play to kickstart a six-play touchdown drive capped by Travis’ 17-yard touchdown to Markeston Douglas.

Oklahoma wasn’t going away, though.

Gabriel scrambled for a 23-yard run, and then hit Farooq for a 28-yard gain to put the Sooners on the doorstep before Barnes’ 12-yard touchdown tied it at 32 with 3:37 remaining.

Luka Doncic nets another triple-double, Mavs down Rockets

Luka Doncic recorded his eighth triple-double of the season while Christian Wood scored 12 of his 21 points in the third period as the host Dallas Mavericks sprinted past the Houston Rockets 129-114 on Thursday for their fifth consecutive victory.

Doncic finished with 35 points, 12 rebounds and 13 assists to lead a Mavericks offense that shot 51.6 percent overall while producing a 25-5 advantage in fast-break points. Doncic was coming off a historic 60-21-10 line against the Knicks two nights earlier.

Doncic had 14 points, three rebounds and three assists in the opening period but it wasn’t until the second quarter that Dallas began to pull away, starting with a corner 3-pointer from Tim Hardaway Jr. (18 points) that provided the Mavericks their first double-digit lead at 48-37 with 5:56 left in the first half.

Doncic put the finishing touches on that frame, drawing an offensive foul from Rockets center Alperen Sengun with 1.1 seconds remaining to thwart a transition opportunity. Doncic followed by beating the buzzer with a 35-foot 3-pointer that lifted Dallas to a 65-51 lead at the break.

Wood (5-for-8), Doncic (4-for-9), Hardaway (3-for-8) and Spencer Dinwiddie (3-for-5) each made multiple 3-pointers for the Mavericks, who placed four starters in double figures. Dwight Powell added 19 points on 8-for-8 shooting with six rebounds in only 21 minutes off the Dallas bench.

Not only were the Rockets inept in transition, they also shot 12 for 34 from behind the arc and missed 11 free throws. Rookie forward Jabari Smith Jr. matched Doncic with 14 first-quarter points but finished with only 16 while missing five of his final six shot attempts. Sengun posted 11 points and six rebounds but logged just 17 minutes as he was whistled for five fouls.

Jalen Green led the Rockets with 23 points while Kevin Porter Jr. added 17 points and seven assists. They both shot 4-for-7 on 3s, with their teammates finishing 4-for-20 from behind the arc.

The Rockets have dropped seven of eight games.

NFL News: Chargers DE Joey Bosa back from IR ahead of playoffs

The Los Angeles Chargers designated star defensive end Joey Bosa to return from injured reserve as the playoff-bound team prepares for Sunday’s matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.

The designation opens a 21-day practice window for Bosa, with a return for Sunday’s game still to be determined.

Bosa, 27, hasn’t played since Week 3 when he came away with a groin injury in a 38-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The four-time Pro Bowl selection was coming off a 2021 season when he had 10.5 sacks, his fourth career season reaching double digits.

The Chargers have been injury-prone all season, with Bosa the last of the team’s stars to make a return. Quarterback Justin Herbert played through fractured rib cartilage, while top wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams missed time.

Despite the personnel issues, the Chargers clinched their second playoff berth in nine seasons when they earned a 20-3 victory over the Indianapolis Colts on Monday night. The Chargers can’t catch the Kansas City Chiefs for the AFC West title, meaning their final two regular-season games will be used for playoff preparations.

The Chargers’ defense has been improving late in the season, allowing an average of 11.3 points over their last three games, all victories.

After the victory over the Colts, Chargers running back Austin Ekeler was anticipating Bosa’s return, according to the Los Angeles Times.

“At the end of the day, it’s going to take defense to win championships,” said Ekeler, who has 16 combined rushing and receiving touchdowns. “Our defense playing like that — and if we get Joey back — my goodness. I’m looking forward to watching these boys fly around.”

Killian Hayes (3 games) among 11 suspended for Pistons-Magic brawl

Eleven players received suspensions of at least one game for their roles in an altercation between members of the Detroit Pistons and Orlando Magic on Wednesday, the NBA announced on Thursday.

Pistons guard Killian Hayes was suspended three games without pay, Magic center Moritz Wagner received two games without pay and Pistons guard Hamidou Diallo was banned one game without pay.

Eight more Magic players were given one-game suspensions without pay for leaving the bench area during an on-court altercation. Cole Anthony, R.J. Hampton, Gary Harris, Kevon Harris, Admiral Schofield, Franz Wagner, Mo Bamba and Wendell Carter Jr. were punished for going over to Detroit’s bench, where the incident occurred.

To ensure the Magic have eight healthy players available for their upcoming games, their suspensions will be staggered. Anthony, Bamba, Carter, Hampton and Gary Harris will be unavailable Friday against the Washington Wizards. Kevon Harris, Schofield and Franz Wagner will serve their suspensions in the game after that, Jan. 4 at Oklahoma City.

Hayes, Moritz Wagner and Diallo were ejected from Detroit’s 121-101 victory on Wednesday after the skirmish.

Moritz Wagner was assessed a Flagrant Foul 2 for shoving Hayes into the Pistons bench while the ball rolled out of play. The Pistons retaliated, with Diallo pushing Moritz Wagner from behind into the Detroit bench area and Hayes punching him in the back of the head, appearing to knock him unconscious for a short time.

Magic players ran to their teammate’s defense.

The suspensions were announced by Joe Dumars, the NBA’s executive vice president and head of basketball operations and a member of the Pistons’ “Bad Boys” teams from 1985-99.

NFL News: Giants S Xavier McKinney has 21-day practice window opened

New York Giants safety Xavier McKinney returned to practice on Thursday for the first time since he sustained fractured fingers on his left hand during a bye week accident in November.

McKinney was injured following an ATV accident during his vacation in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

McKinney can be activated at any point over the next 21 days and is eligible to play in Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts. Giants coach Brian Daboll said he wasn’t sure if McKinney would be ready to play on Sunday.

“Just starting him today,” Daboll said Thursday. “I think the first thing is just let him get out here, move around. He hasn’t played in a while, but he’s got a contraption to protect his hand. So, I figure we’ll get him started. He’s been moving around, rehabbing. His lower body’s obviously good. So, we’ll go ahead and let him practice. And then just kind of see where he’s at.”

McKinney, 23, recorded 38 tackles, one forced fumble and one sack in eight games (all starts) this season.

He has 156 tackles and six interceptions in 31 career games (28 starts) since being selected by the Giants in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Spurs stroll past Knicks despite Julius Randle’s 41 points

Keldon Johnson scored 30 points and Romeo Langford added a career-high 23 as the San Antonio Spurs had every answer late on the way to a 122-115 win over the visiting New York Knicks on Thursday.

Julius Randle’s season-high 41 points weren’t enough for New York, which lost its fifth consecutive game.

The Spurs held an 11-point lead at halftime and were never really challenged in the second half, going up by 17 after back-to-back 3-pointers by Johnson with less than four minutes left in the third quarter. Randle’s 3-pointer at the end of the third brought New York within 92-79.

The Knicks cut their deficit to eight points on a 3-pointer by Miles McBride with 3:17 to play, but New York never got closer than seven points. The Knicks wound up shooting 42.2 percent from the floor, compared to 51.1 percent for the Spurs.

Tre Jones scored 13 points, Jeremy Sochan had 12 and Jakob Poeltl grabbed 12 rebounds for the Spurs, who have won two of their past three games. San Antonio won without Devin Vassell (knee).

Randle completed a double-double with 11 rebounds and chipped in seven assists, and Immanuel Quickley added a career-best 36 points. The Knicks, who got 11 points from Evan Fournier, played without Jalen Brunson (hip) and RJ Barrett (finger).

The Knicks led by as many as five points in the opening quarter after back-to-back 3-pointers from Randle made it 23-18. San Antonio swept to the front later in the period via a 9-0 run and took a 38-29 advantage by quarter’s end on the strength of Josh Richardson’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer.

San Antonio stayed on a torrid shooting pace during the second quarter, building as much as a 14-point lead after a Jones 3-pointer with 8:03 to play in the half. New York fought back to within 53-47 after a free throw by Quickley before the Spurs scored the next six points. San Antonio led 64-53 at the break.

Johnson paced the Spurs with 11 points before halftime, with Langford hitting for 10. Randle led all scorers with 21 points before the break, and Quickley added 11.

NFL News: Reports: Bears considering Big Ten head Kevin Warren for team president

The Chicago Bears are strongly considering making Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren as their next team president, multiple outlets reported Thursday.

The Bears are seeking to replace longtime president and CEO Ted Phillips, 65, who previously announced he would retire at the end of the season.

ESPN said Warren, 59, is one of the “final candidates” for the position and has interviewed in person for the job.

The Bears have been tight-lipped about the hiring process.

“We have not set a timeline for announcing Ted Phillips’ successor,” the Bears said in a statement Thursday, per ESPN. “Our search team has cast a wide net, spoken to many outstanding candidates and looks forward to introducing our next President and CEO at the process’s conclusion.”

The Big Ten released its own statement, claiming Warren did not interview for a position but rather offered his professional insight to the Bears for their hiring process.

“Over the course of three decades in professional and collegiate sports, Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren regularly receives unique opportunities and requests for his expertise from leaders across a variety of industries ranging from professional sports ownership groups to private equity firms,” the statement said. “The Commissioner utilizes each occurrence to listen, learn and assist every stakeholder in the most appropriate and effective manner. The Commissioner remains focused on the Big Ten Conference, its 14 member institutions and over 10,000 student-athletes in both regular season and postseason play.”

The Big Ten hired Warren in 2020, and his accomplishments include signing a media-rights deal reportedly worth more than $7 billion and setting the stage to bring UCLA and Southern California into the conference.

Warren was a practicing attorney in Kansas City when the St. Louis Rams hired him to a legal/front-office position in 1997. He moved up in the organization and in 2000 was named vice president of football administration.

In 2001, he was hired by the Detroit Lions in a senior-level front-office role; then, in 2003, he returned to the law profession and helped Zygi Wilf and partners to buy the Minnesota Vikings. When the deal was done, he became the team’s executive price president of legal affairs and chief administrative officer, later promoted to chief operating officer.

Part of his experience with the Vikings that could appeal to the Bears was his participation in the planning of U.S. Bank Stadium, which opened on July 22, 2016. The Bears could decide to leave old Soldier Field in Chicago and build a stadium on 326 acres in suburban Arlington Heights.

Ja Morant hands out 17 assists, Grizzlies down Raptors

Ja Morant scored 13 of his 19 points in the third quarter and added a career-best 17 assists as the visiting Memphis Grizzlies defeated the Toronto Raptors 119-106 Thursday night.

Dillon Brooks scored 25 points and Steven Adams had 14 points and 17 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who won for the second time in their past six games.

Desmond Bane added 16 points, Jaren Jackson Jr. scored 15 and John Konchar contributed 11 points for Memphis.

Before fouling out late in the fourth quarter, Pascal Siakam had 25 points and 10 rebounds for Toronto.

Gary Trent Jr. added 20 points for the Raptors, who have lost eight of their past 10 games and five straight at home. O.G. Anunoby scored 16 points, Scottie Barnes had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Chris Boucher scored 13 points.

The Grizzlies led by 18 entering the fourth quarter, but the Raptors cut the lead to nine on Siakam’s layup with 5:53 to play. Brooks answered with a 3-pointer and Adams made a hook shot with 4:30 to play — and the lead was back to 14.

After leading by 15 points, the Grizzlies were up 30-20 at the end of the first quarter.

The Raptors trimmed the lead to five two minutes into the second, but Memphis used a 12-1 surge to lead by 16 with 5:17 left in the quarter. Adams made a dunk from Morant’s pass to increase the lead to 19 at 55-36 with 2:10 to go before ultimately taking a 57-43 lead into the half.

Brooks scored 15 points and Adams had eight points and 12 rebounds at the break for the Grizzlies, who shot 41.8 percent (23-for-55) in the half. Trent scored 12 points and Siakam had 11 for the Raptors, who shot just 29.8 percent (14-for-47) in the half.

Bane’s 3-point basket with 7:54 to go in the third quarter stretched Memphis’ lead to 23 — its biggest spread of the game. Toronto used a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 14 with 2:37 remaining. Memphis responded with an 8-0 run and led 93-75 after three quarters.

Starting guard Fred VanVleet (back) did not play for the Raptors.

NFL News: Reports: Titans QB Joshua Dobbs to start vs. Cowboys

Tennessee Titans quarterback Joshua Dobbs will make his first career NFL start in Thursday’s game against the visiting Dallas Cowboys, multiple media outlets reported.

Dobbs reportedly is getting the nod over rookie Malik Willis for Tennessee, which is without starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who was placed on injured reserve on Thursday due to an ankle injury.

The Titans also placed outside linebacker Bud Dupree (pectoral) and inside linebacker Zach Cunningham (elbow) on injured reserve.

As for the Cowboys (11-4), NFL Network reported running back Tony Pollard is expected to be inactive for Thursday’s contest. Pollard has been unable to participate in practice all week due to a thigh injury.

The Titans (7-8) can improve their record but risk injury while gaining no ground in playoff positioning until the Jan. 8 winner-take-all AFC South showdown with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Even if the Jaguars beat the Houston Texans on Sunday to improve to 8-8, and should Tennessee lose Thursday, the division title would still be on the line when the teams meet head-to-head.

Dobbs, 27, was signed by the Titans off the Detroit Lions’ practice squad on Dec. 21. He began the season with the Cleveland Browns, who parted ways with him after Deshaun Watson joined the roster following his 11-game suspension.

He appeared in six games with the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2018 and 2020 seasons, completing 10 of 17 passes for 45 yards with one interception.

Dobbs returns to the state where he played in college at Tennessee from 2013-16 and threw for more than 7,000 yards.

Willis, 23, completed just 14 of 23 passes for 99 yards and two interceptions in Tennessee’s 19-14 loss to the Houston Texans last Saturday. He is completing just 50.8 percent of his passes for 276 yards with three picks in eight games this season.

Tannehill is missing his second straight game and fourth of the season due to two ankle injuries.

Pollard, 25, sits 12 rushing yards shy of 1,000 for the season. Teammate Ezekiel Elliott has 829 yards and 11 touchdowns, including scores in eight consecutive games.

Pollard has a team-leading 12 total touchdowns (nine rushing, three receiving). The 2022 Pro Bowl selection was limited to nine carries for 19 yards last week, when the Cowboys rallied to beat the Philadelphia Eagles, and McCarthy said Malik Davis would see more reps in this week’s prep sessions.

Davis has 23 carries for 103 yards and one touchdown in 10 games this season.

Dallas is the top wild-card team in the NFC and maintains the slimmest hope of catching Philadelphia in the East division.

The Cowboys can win the NFC East if the Eagles lose their final two games and Dallas beats the Titans and Washington Commanders. Philadelphia (13-2) locks up the division and home-field advantage throughout conference playoffs with a victory Sunday against the New Orleans Saints (6-9).

Tennessee promoted outside linebacker Sam Okuayinonu, inside linebacker Andre Smith and running back Jonathan Ward from the practice squad to the active roster on Thursday.
