MLS News: Sporting KC’s Kortne Ford undergoes Achilles surgery

0

Sporting Kansas City defender Kortne Ford underwent surgery Friday to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon and is expected to miss the 2023 season.

Ford, 27, was injured during Wednesday’s preseason game against Real Salt Lake.

Ford joined Sporting KC prior to last season and was scoreless in 14 MLS matches (nine starts). His season was interrupted by a 10-game suspension for violating the MLS Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health policy.

Ford also played for the Colorado Rapids from 2017-18. He didn’t play in any games in 2019 or 2020 due to multiple knee surgeries.

In 2021, Ford played for San Antonio FC of the United Soccer League.

Ford has one goal in 49 MLS matches (42 starts).

Nets’ Cam Thomas fined $40K for anti-gay remark

Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas was fined $40,000 for using “derogatory and disparaging language” during a live television interview, the NBA announced Friday.

Thomas’ comments came during TNT’s on-court interview alongside new teammate Spencer Dinwiddie following Brooklyn’s 116-105 victory over the Chicago Bulls on Thursday.

On Tuesday, Dinwiddie joked with reporters on the heels of the Kyrie Irving trade that Brooklyn may not have received “the best trade package, but we’re the best looking, and the Nets needed some help in that department.”

Dinwiddie and Dorian Finney-Smith were acquired from the Dallas Mavericks as part of the trade.

When asked by TNT about Dinwiddie’s comment, Thomas said: “We already had good-looking guys, no h—.”

Thomas took to social media to apologize for his comment.

“I want to apologize for the insensitive word I used in the postgame interview,” he wrote on Twitter. “I was excited about the win and was being playful. I definitely didn’t intend to offend anyone, but realize that I probably did. My apologies again. Much love.”

NFL News: Report: Texans to hire Matt Burke as DC; Kliff Kingsbury on radar

The Houston Texans are expected to hire Matt Burke as their defensive coordinator, NFL Network reported Friday.

The network also reported former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury would interview for the offensive coordinator role.

Burke, who interviewed with the Texans this week, most recently worked as the defensive line coach of the Cardinals.

Burke, 46, would represent the first big hire for DeMeco Ryans, who was named the Texans head coach on Jan. 31. Ryans, 38, spent the past two seasons as the 49ers’ defensive coordinator.

Kingsbury went 28-37-1 as head coach of the Cardinals, who cleaned house after a 4-13 season ended in January. Kingsbury, 43, said he immediately was headed to Thailand with his girlfriend, denying at the time he would be interested in the offensive coordinator position with the Los Angeles Rams.

With the Texans, the opportunity is slightly different in that Kingsbury is a Texas native, and Houston is 175 miles from his hometown of New Braunfels. He has deep roots in the state, where he played quarterback at Texas Tech and later coached Patrick Mahomes in Lubbock. He was an assistant coach at Texas A&M when Johnny Manziel won the Heisman Trophy.

Burke previously was defensive coordinator in two of his three seasons with the Miami Dolphins (2016-18). He has worked in a variety of coaching roles with the Tennessee Titans (2004-08), Detroit Lions (2009-13), Cincinnati Bengals (2014-16), Philadelphia Eagles (2019-20) and New York Jets (2021).

The Texans ranked 30th in yards allowed (379.5) and 27th in points allowed (24.7) this past season.

MLS News: Austin FC sign F Will Bruin

0

Austin FC signed veteran free agent forward Will Bruin to a one-year contract on Friday.

Financial terms were not announced, but the deal includes an option for the 2024 season.

Bruin, 33, is entering his 13th MLS season, following six with Houston Dynamo FC (2011-2016) and six with Seattle Sounders FC (2017-2022). He won the MLS Cup in 2019 and the 2022 Concacaf Champions League in 2022, both with the Sounders.

He ranks eighth among active league players in career goals scored (77) and 15th in games played (310). His nine career goals in the MLS Cup playoffs are tied for the most among active players.

“I’m thrilled to join Austin FC and ready to do whatever I can to help the team toward its goal of lifting trophies,” Bruin said. “After seeing the success the team had last year and the incredible support from the fan base, I’m confident we can achieve great things together this season. I’m excited to get to work.”

In his MLS career, Bruin has posted 33 assists to go with the 77 goals.

He also was a member of the U.S. men’s national team that won the 2013 Concacaf Gold Cup.

“Will is a proven goal-scorer and winner in MLS, and brings valuable experience to the team,” said Sean Rubio, Austin’s interim sporting director. “He also adds another dimension to our attacking options.”

MLB News: Astros lock up RHP Cristian Javier with 5-year extension

The Houston Astros have inked right-handed pitcher Cristian Javier to a five-year extension, the team announced Friday.

The Houston Chronicle reported that the deal was for $64 million over five years with a $2 million signing bonus and no team options.

“Cristian is an outstanding pitcher, so we are really excited about signing him to a long-term deal,” Astros General Manager Dana Brown said. “As a core piece of our rotation, we felt that he is the perfect candidate for this type of deal. This is in line with our vision to try to lock players up to sustain our success both now and in the future.”

Javier was the starting pitcher in the second no-hitter in World Series history when the Astros defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 5-0 in Game 4 on Nov. 2. The combined no-hitter joined Don Larsen’s perfect game in 1956 for the New York Yankees.

The 25-year-old Javier struck out nine and walked two in six innings and was removed after 97 pitches. Bryan Abreu, Rafael Montero and Ryan Pressly finished up the no-hitter.

Javier also was part of a combined no-hitter in the regular season against the Yankees on June 25. He struck out 13 and walked one in seven innings and threw a career-high 115 pitches.

In 2022, Javier struck out 194 batters (against 52 walks) with a 2.54 ERA while going 11-9 for the World Series champions. In the playoffs, he was 2-0 with an 0.71 ERA, allowing one run and two hits while striking out 16 in 12 2/3 innings.

Javier joined the Astros organization in 2015 and was promoted to the majors in 2020. He has excelled since, posting a 3.05 ERA in compiling a 20-12 record in over 300 innings of work.

His postseason numbers have been even better, with Javier boasting a 4-1 record and 2.20 ERA over 32 2/3 innings.

NHL News: Blackhawks come from behind, down Coyotes in OT

Caleb Jones scored on a rebound with 1:23 remaining in overtime as the Chicago Blackhawks rallied from an early two-goal deficit to defeat the visiting Arizona Coyotes 4-3 on Friday night.

Andreas Athanasiou, who finished with a goal and two assists, broke in on a breakaway that Arizona goaltender Connor Ingram blocked into the right circle. Jones scooped up the rebound and then fired a wrist shot into the net, his second goal of the season and also his second career overtime winner.

Colin Blackwell and Seth Jones also scored goals and Sam Lafferty added two assists for Chicago. Rookie Jaxson Stauber, making his first career start at the United Center, finished with 23 saves to improve to 3-0-0 and become the first goalie in franchise history to win his first three NHL starts.

Clayton Keller had a goal and two assists, Nick Schmaltz added a goal and an assist and Nick Bjugstad also scored for Arizona, which fell to 6-20-5 on the road this season. Ingram stopped 40 of 44 shots.

Arizona, shut out 2-0 in its last trip to Chicago on Jan. 6, needed just 88 seconds to take a 1-0 lead. Keller, left open on the left circle, took a pass from Jakob Chychrun and then skated in and fired a wrist shot off the far post and into the net for his 19th goal of the season.

Schmaltz, playing in his 400th career game, made it 2-0 at 12:34 of the first when he one-timed a cross-crease pass from Keller from below the left circle for his 12th goal of the season.

Chicago cut it to 2-1 at 13:53 of the first when Jones scored his sixth goal of the season on a delayed penalty. He wired a wrist shot from the top of the right circle through traffic and into the far corner of the net.

Athanasiou tied it 2-2 early in the second period. He picked up the puck by the left boards and then skated in and roofed a backhand shot from the low slot for his 11th goal of the season.

Blackwell gave Chicago its first lead with 5:26 remaining in the third period when he speared in a rebound of an Athanasiou shot that settled on the goal line by the left post. It was Blackwell’s second goal of the season.

Bjugstad tied it 3-3 with 2:27 left when he fired a wrist shot from the top of the slot through Stauber’s pads for his 12th goal of the season. Keller picked up his 300th career point on the score.

NHL News: John Tavares’ goals, Ilya Samsonov’s shutout lift Leafs over Jackets

John Tavares scored two goals and Ilya Samsonov made 30 saves to fuel the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs to a 3-0 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday in the opener of a home-and-home series.

Pierre Engvall also scored and Mitchell Marner notched two assists for the Maple Leafs, who returned from their All-Star break by recording their fourth win in six outings.

Samsonov turned aside all nine shots he faced in the third period to preserve his third shutout of the season and ninth in his career.

Joonas Korpisalo finished with 38 saves for the Blue Jackets, who will look to snap a four-game winless skid (0-3-1) when the teams reconvene in Toronto on Saturday.

The Maple Leafs took advantage of Mathieu Olivier’s interference penalty to set up the opening goal.

Marner skated into the slot and chipped the puck ahead to Tavares, who deflected it past Korpisalo at 5:45 of the first period.

Marner’s assist — his team-leading 42nd of the season at that point — extended his point streak to five games. The NHL’s Third Star of the Week is coming off a stellar performance at the All-Star Game in which he set a tournament record by notching six assists — three apiece in the two wins by the Atlantic Division.

Korpisalo prevented a two-goal deficit just over two minutes later by denying William Nylander on a breakaway. He also thwarted a point-blank chance by Alex Steeves, who was recalled from the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League on Thursday. Steeves was making his season debut and fourth career NHL appearance.

Columbus was unable take advantage of a four-minute power play in the second period following defenseman Timothy Liljegren’s high-sticking double minor.

Engvall doubled the advantage at 7:49 of the third period after converting defenseman’s Morgan Rielly’s centering feed. Engvall’s goal was his 11th of the season.

Tavares scored from the slot to cap his two-goal performance just 49 seconds later. The Maple Leafs captain has 23 goals on the season and three in his last six games.

NHL News: Vladimir Tarasenko makes Rangers debut, scores in 6-3 win over Kraken

Vladimir Tarasenko scored his first goal for his new team 2:49 into the first period as the host New York Rangers recorded a 6-3 victory over the slumping Seattle Kraken Friday night.

Tarasenko was placed on the top line with Artemi Panarin and Mika Zibanejad after being obtained from the St. Louis Blues Thursday afternoon. He meshed seamlessly with New York’s stars and scored on his second shift.

Kaapo Kakko and Vincent Trocheck also scored in the three-goal opening period as the Rangers improved to 5-0-1 since revamping their lines in the wake of a 3-1 home loss to the league-best Boston Bruins on Jan. 19. Defenseman Ryan Lindgren added a short-handed empty-net goal.

Defenseman Jacob Trouba and Zibanejad added power-play goals as the Rangers also improved to 19-4-3 in their past 26 games.

New York’s Igor Shesterkin made 26 saves and stopped Brandon Tanev on a short-handed breakaway late in the third.

Oliver Bjorkstrand scored in the second period while Jared McCann and Tanev tallied 22 seconds apart in the third as the Kraken dropped to 3-6-1 since winning eight straight Jan. 1-14.

Seattle goalie Martin Jones allowed five goals on 27 shots.

After a giveaway by Seattle’s Ryan Donato in the neutral zone, Panarin gained possession and sped down the right side. Tarasenko skated through the slot and easily turned Panarin’s centering feed into a 1-0 lead.

About 2 1/2 minutes later, Kakko crashed the net and made it 2-0 by tipping in a shot by Filip Chytil past Jones.

New York got to the front of the net for its third goal with 5:31 remaining. Jones initially made a left pad stop on Trocheck but could not cover up, the puck trickled to the goal line and Trocheck easily tapped it in for his 15th goal.

Trouba made it 4-0 by sweeping a backhander from the red line that caromed off Seattle defenseman Will Borgen’s skate into the vacated right side of the net 63 seconds in.

Bjorkstrand got Seattle on the board by finishing off a breakaway when the Rangers were slow to complete a line change a little over a minute after Trouba scored.

After Zibanejad buried a one-timer from the left side early in the third period, McCann blasted a wrister over Shesterkin and Tanev scored on a breakaway with 13:39 remaining.

NHL News: Wild try to end slide vs. road-warrior Devils

Clinging to the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference, the slumping Minnesota Wild will try to snap a three-game losing streak when they host the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night in Saint Paul, Minn.

It’s the fifth time this season the Wild have lost three consecutive games, but so far they haven’t dropped four in a row. To keep that streak alive they’ll have to bounce back from an ugly 5-1 home loss to the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday that saw them get booed off the ice.

It won’t be easy. New Jersey owns the best road record in the NHL at 19-3-2.

It’s the second game of a seven-game homestand for Minnesota, which is tied in points with third-place Colorado in the Central Division with 58 points. The defending Stanley Cup champions have a game in hand on the Wild.

“We’re still in the thick of it and we can’t be down on ourselves,” Wild captain Jared Spurgeon said.

Minnesota allowed four goals in the second period of Thursday’s loss, including three in a span of 2:26. The final one came when Jack Eichel cruised alone down the right wing and fired a shot past Marc-Andre Fleury’s blocker side and inside the far post. Fleury, who was eventually lifted after the second period, then slammed his stick against the post before tossing it toward center ice.

“I shouldn’t do that, probably,” Fleury said. “I was just mad for giving up another goal. There was a lot in that period. I felt like I didn’t make a save. Just angry, and it came out that way.”

Fleury finished with 18 saves on 23 shots. The first two Vegas goals came on deflections off Minnesota players near the net. Another came on a penalty shot by Reilly Smith, who had been slashed on a breakaway by defenseman Alex Goligoski.

“It’s hard not to win and to lose this way, too, especially for me as a goalie (against) my old teammates,” Fleury said. “It’s a little embarrassing.

“It’s better to have a rough patch now than later on. Once we get out of this, we’re going to be better for it.”

New Jersey begins a nine-day, four-game road trip that also includes stops at Columbus, St. Louis and Pittsburgh. The second-place Devils have won three in a row and trail Metropolitan-leading Carolina by four points.

New Jersey comes in off a 3-1 victory over Seattle on Thursday. Defenseman Dougie Hamilton led the way with a pair of power-play goals to extend his point streak to six games and also give him a career-high 51 points (15 goals, team-high 36 assists) after just 51 games. Backup goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood made 33 saves.

The win over the Kraken was the first game this season missed by All-Star center Jack Hughes, who is listed as week-to-week with an upper-body injury. Hughes is third in the NHL with 35 goals and leads the team with 67 points.

“It’s been about the team all year, really,” New Jersey coach Lindy Ruff told reporters. “(Jack) had a great first 50 games, you can’t disguise that at all. But at the same time, we’ve made this about the team, and we need the other guys.”

Hughes had two goals and an assist in 21:44 of time on ice in New Jersey’s 5-4 overtime victory over Vancouver on Monday. He missed practice on Tuesday and then left Wednesday’s practice early before Ruff announced he would be sidelined.

“It’s going to need a little time,” Ruff said. “When somebody goes down, we really have the next man up. … Every team has to deal with key injuries, key injuries to key players, and other players have to step in and have the ability to provide what Jack was bringing.”

NHL News: Panthers put modest win streak on line vs. stumbling Avs

The Florida Panthers won their first eight games of 2021-2022, and they finished the regular season with the best record in the NHL.

This season has been a struggle by comparison. The Panthers didn’t win three straight games for the first time until Thursday.

That says it all for the Panthers, who will play host to the reigning Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night in Sunrise, Fla.

The Panthers are 6-1-0 in their past seven home games, and they believe they have finally turned the proverbial corner. In fact, they have outscored their past three opponents by a combined 15-5.

“We know we need to get on a bit of a run here,” Panthers forward Sam Reinhart said after scoring twice in Florida’s 4-1 win over the visiting San Jose Sharks on Thursday. “We’ve got to take care of home ice, especially with all of the opportunities we have ahead of us.”

The Panthers won on Thursday without their captain, Aleksander Barkov, who is one of the best two-way centers in the NHL. Barkov suffered an injury to his right hand in Florida’s win over Tampa Bay on Monday, and he is questionable to return on Saturday.

In Barkov’s absence, Eetu Luostarinen dished two assists for just his second multi-point game this season.

A 24-year-old native of Finland, Luostarinen has 25 points — one short of his career high.

“He’s such a smart player,” Reinhart said of Luostarinen. “I don’t know many guys in this league that are going to fill in for ‘Barky,’ but his game has really elevated this season.”

Matthew Tkachuk leads the Panthers in assists (44) and points (71). Carter Verhaeghe tops Florida with 28 goals, and Brandon Montour is No. 1 among Panthers defensemen with 44 points.

Montour had a 10-game points streak — a record for Panthers defensemen — snapped on Thursday. Tkachuk had a seven-game points streak snapped on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Avalanche, who have lost two straight games, have played this entire season without Gabriel Landeskog, who is due to return soon from knee surgery. It’s a big loss given that Landeskog has posted at least 20 goals in five straight seasons.

Colorado’s Cale Makar, who won the Norris Trophy last season as the league’s best defenseman, missed Thursday’s game due to an upper-body injury.

The Avalanche also lost forward Evan Rodrigues (11 goals) in the third period on Thursday when he took a puck to the face and did not return. Josh Manson and Darren Helm, two primary penalty-killers, are out due to lower-body injuries.

In addition, Nathan MacKinnon, who scored 32 goals last season, has just 14 goals this season while missing 11 games due to injury. MacKinnon still leads Colorado with 41 assists.

Colorado has flopped since returning from the All-Star break, scoring just one goal in two losses. The Avalanche were blanked 5-0 by Tampa Bay on Thursday.

“We’ve had two bad games,” acknowledged winger Mikko Rantanen, who leads Colorado in goals (34) and points (61). “Offensively, we have to be better.”

If the first-string goalies play on Saturday, the matchup would feature Colorado’s Alexandar Georgiev against Florida’s Sergei Bobrovsky.

Georgiev, in his first season with Colorado after five years playing for the New York Rangers, is 20-12-3 with a 2.67 goals-against average.

Bobrovsky is 14-13-2 with a 3.09 GAA. He is 7-2-1 in his past 10 decisions.
