Joel Embiid flirts with quadruple-double in monster 59-point game

Philadelphia 76ers superstar Joel Embiid put on a show for the home fans on Sunday night, nearly becoming just the fifth player in NBA history to record a quadruple-double.

Instead, the five-time All-Star center had to settle for a career-high 59 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists and a career-high-tying seven blocks in Philadelphia’s 105-98 win over the Utah Jazz.

Embiid, who reached the 50-point plateau for the third time in his career, was 19-for-28 from the field and hit 20 of his 24 free throws.

Embiid dominated the fourth quarter, especially down the stretch, as he scored 26 of the Sixers’ 27 fourth-quarter points — including the club’s final 13 to secure the victory. Five of his blocks came in the fourth, including a late swat with the Sixers leading by three that helped deny the Jazz a road win.

NFL News: Cardinals top Rams in battle of backup QBs

In a battle of backup quarterbacks, the visiting Arizona Cardinals dropped the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams into last place in the NFC West with a 27-17 victory Sunday in Inglewood, Calif.

For the Rams (3-6), starting quarterback Matthew Stafford did not play because of a concussion, and counterpart Kyler Murray was out with a hamstring injury for the Cardinals (4-6).

Colt McCoy, who was 2-1 as a starter last season when Murray was sidelined by a high ankle sprain, completed 26 of 37 passes for 238 yards and a touchdown on Sunday, with wide receivers DeAndre Hopkins catching 10 passes for 98 yards and Rondale Moore making nine receptions for 94 yards.

Rams quarterback John Wolford was 24 of 36 for 212 yards and a touchdown, with one interception. Wide receiver Cooper Kupp had only three receptions for minus-1 yard and suffered an ankle injury early in the fourth quarter.

Arizona had no turnovers in the game, while the Rams had two that led to 10 points.

The Cardinals took a 17-3 lead into halftime after two late second-quarter touchdowns.

The teams traded field goals on the first two possessions of the game, with Matt Gay hitting from 36 yards for the Rams and Tristan Vizcaino also connecting from 36 for Arizona.

The Rams then had three consecutive three-and-outs and the Cardinals two. But after the Rams’ third, the Cardinals took a 10-3 lead with 1:56 to play in the half on a 4-yard run by James Conner. Hopkins had four receptions on the drive, and McCoy ran for 2 yards on fourth-and-1 to set up the Conner score.

Four plays later, linebacker Myjai Sanders hit Wolford as he was passing, and defensive end J.J. Watt recovered the ball quickly at the 30-yard line. The play originally was whistled dead as an incomplete pass, but a replay review reversed the play.

Five plays later, wide receiver A.J. Green scored on a 6-yard pass from McCoy with 24 seconds remaining in the first half.

The Rams cut the lead to 17-10 in the third quarter, but the Cardinals answered when Moore had a 14-yard reception on third-and-17 and a catch on fourth-and-3. Moore made a spectacular catch on a 26-yard play to the 15-yard line. Conner scored again on a 9-yard run.

After Vizcaino made a 46-yard field goal, the Rams scored the final points on a 3-yard pass from Wolford to wide receiver Van Jefferson with seven seconds remaining.

Arizona tight end Zach Ertz left the game with a knee injury in the first quarter. He went to the sideline and was taken by a cart to the locker room as the quarter was coming to a close.

Michael Porter Jr. pours in 31 points, Nuggets stomp Bulls

Michael Porter Jr. scored a season-high 31 points and Jamal Murray added 23 to lead the visiting Denver Nuggets to a 126-103 victory against the Chicago Bulls on Sunday.

Aaron Gordon (13 points), Bruce Brown (12) and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (10) rounded out a balanced attack for the Nuggets, who won for the seventh time in the past nine games while closing a four-game road trip at 3-1.

Nikola Jokic contributed eight points, 14 assists and six rebounds in 28 minutes for Denver. Porter was 11-for-16 from the field.

Chicago has lost four of five. The Bulls trailed by as many as 28 points while shooting 49.4 percent compared to 60 percent for the Nuggets.

Zach LaVine paced the Bulls with 21 points, while DeMar DeRozan followed with 16. Andre Drummond posted a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Patrick Williams (15 points) and Goran Dragic (11) also scored in double figures.

Drummond eclipsed 10,000 career points with a basket in the second quarter, becoming the 52nd center in league history to accomplish the feat.

Denver shot 60.5 percent in the first half and took a 62-47 lead into the break. Efficient ball movement boosted the Nuggets, who had 21 assists on 23 made field goals before halftime. Jokic contributed 12 of the assists, often finding either Porter (15 points), Murray (14) or Gordon (10).

A 10-0 Chicago run, much of it with Jokic on the bench, brought the hosts within four points in the second quarter, but the Nuggets responded to get the advantage back to 15.

Bones Hyland (health and safety protocols) and Ish Smith (calf) were out for Denver.

Chicago’s Dalen Terry scored five points in 5:34 of court time in the fourth quarter after playing for Chicago’s NBA G League affiliate earlier Sunday. Terry had 14 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in the Windy City Bulls’ win against the Iowa Wolves.

NFL News: Packers end five-game skid with OT win over Cowboys

Mason Crosby kicked a 28-yard field goal with 3:06 left in overtime to lift the host Green Bay Packers to a dramatic 31-28 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

Aaron Rodgers threw three touchdown passes to rookie Christian Watson, and the Packers rallied from a 14-point, fourth-quarter deficit to spoil Mike McCarthy’s return to Lambeau Field. The Cowboys’ coach won a Super Bowl with Green Bay during his tenure from 2006-18.

Aaron Jones rushed for 138 yards and one touchdown and Rodgers completed 14 of 20 passes for 224 yards as Green Bay (4-6) snapped a five-game losing streak. Watson had four receptions for 107 yards and Rudy Ford intercepted two passes for the Packers.

Dak Prescott was 27-of-46 passing for 265 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions for Dallas (6-3). CeeDee Lamb established career bests of 11 receptions and 150 yards while tying his high of two touchdowns for Dallas.

Tony Pollard rushed for 115 yards and one touchdown while being the main running back with Ezekiel Elliott (knee injury) out for the second straight game. Dalton Schultz caught a touchdown pass for the Cowboys.

Dallas failed to convert a fourth-and-3 from the Packers’ 35-yard line on its overtime possession.

Rodgers’ 36-yard pass to Allen Lazard to the Dallas 20 was the big play to set up Crosby’s winning kick.

The Cowboys outgained Green Bay 421-415.

Dallas scored two third-quarter touchdowns to take a 28-14 lead. Pollard scored on a 13-yard run with 7:14 remaining, and Prescott tossed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Lamb with 2:47 left.

The Packers moved within 28-21 when Rodgers converted a fourth-and-7 throw to Watson for a 39-yard score with 13:23 remaining in the game.

The two teamed again with 2:29 left when Watson caught a tying 7-yard scoring pass to cap a 10-play, 89-yard drive.

In the first half, Prescott hit Schultz on a 5-yard touchdown pass with eight seconds left to tie the score at 14.

Dallas also scored the game’s first touchdown, with Prescott hitting Lamb from 3 yards out with 9:52 left in the second quarter to cap a 17-play, 83-yard drive.

Green Bay tied the score nearly five minutes later when Rodgers delivered a 58-yard scoring pass to Watson.

Ford’s second interception of the half set up a 12-yard run by Jones that gave the Packers a 14-7 lead with 1:42 left.

Joel Embiid’s career-high 59 points send Sixers past Jazz

Joel Embiid had a massive performance, scoring a career-high 59 points and flirting with a quadruple-double, to lead the host Philadelphia 76ers to a 105-98 win over the Utah Jazz on Sunday night.

A night after carrying the Sixers to a solid 121-109 win over Atlanta with 42 points, Embiid followed up with a masterpiece, which included 19-for-28 shooting, 11 rebounds, eight assists and a career-high-tying seven blocked shots. He even sank his second 3-pointer of the season and had a steal.

Embiid, who hit 20 of 24 free throws, absolutely dominated the fourth quarter and especially down the stretch. He scored 26 points of the Sixers’ 27 points in the final 12 minutes, including the final 13 for his club after the Jazz took their final lead at 94-92.

Five of Embiid’s blocks came in the fourth quarter, including a swat with 1:20 remaining that helped the Sixers fend off the relentless Jazz.

Malik Beasley led a balanced Utah attack with 18 points off the bench. Lauri Markkanen had a quiet night with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Collin Sexton scored 15, Kelly Olynyk chipped in with 14 points and Jarred Vanderbilt added nine points and 10 rebounds.

The Jazz, who led by as many as 14, lost their second straight game in as many nights on a three-game Eastern trip after shooting just 39.4 percent.

Tyrese Maxey was the only other Sixer to reach double figures in scoring. He had 19 on 8-of-24 shooting.

Utah led for most of the first half, surging on a 13-2 run for a 48-34 lead after a Beasley triple.

Philadelphia responded with a 12-2 spurt and then pulled within two after Embiid drained his second 3-pointer of the season. Embiid scored 24 in the first half.

Utah closed out the half well to take a 57-51 lead despite committing 10 turnovers.

The Sixers scored the first seven points of the second half for a 58-57 advantage. The teams then went back and forth the rest of the way, with neither team able to go ahead by more than four points.

NFL News: Matt Ryan, Colts top Raiders in Jeff Saturday’s coaching debut

Matt Ryan’s 35-yard touchdown pass to Parris Campbell with just over five minutes left rallied the visiting Indianapolis Colts to a 25-20 win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.

Ryan went 21-for-28 passing for 222 yards with one touchdown passing and one rushing, while Jonathan Taylor rushed for 147 yards, including a 66-yard touchdown, on 22 carries.

Campbell finished with seven receptions for 76 yards as the Colts (4-5-1) ended a three-game losing streak by giving interim coach Jeff Saturday the first win of his coaching career.

Derek Carr went 24-for-38 passing for 248 yards and two touchdowns, while Davante Adams finished with nine receptions for 126 yards for the Raiders (2-7), who dropped their third straight game. Josh Jacobs rushed for 78 yards and a score on 21 carries.

Ryan was playing his first game since injuring his shoulder against the Tennessee Titans on Oct. 23. It was Taylor’s first game after being sidelined with an injured ankle following a loss to the Washington Commanders on Oct. 30.

Trailing 13-7 at halftime, the Raiders took a 14-13 lead on Jacobs’ 1-yard touchdown run with 1:51 left in the third quarter.

The Colts responded two plays later. Taylor broke free for a 66-yard touchdown run, giving Indianapolis a 19-14 lead after a failed two-point conversion with just over a minute left in the third quarter.

The Raiders regained the lead when Carr hit Adams on a 48-yard touchdown for a 20-19 advantage after their own failed two-point conversion with 11:36 left in the game.

Ryan gave the Colts the lead for good when he found Campbell across the middle for a 35-yard touchdown with 5:07 left. They failed to convert on another two-point try.

The Raiders’ final drive ended when Stephon Gilmore broke up Carr’s fourth-down pass intended for Adams in the end zone with 47 seconds left.

The Colts took a 7-0 lead on Ryan’s 1-yard sneak with 3:17 left in the first quarter.

Chase McLaughlin’s 48-yard field goal extended the Colts’ lead to 10-0 with 12:38 left in the second quarter.

The Raiders pulled to within 10-7 when Foster Moreau made a diving catch in the end zone to snare Carr’s 4-yard pass with 58 seconds left in the half.

McLaughlin’s 48-yard field goal as time expired in the first half pushed Indianapolis’ advantage to 13-7.

Celtics seek 7th straight win, host Thunder

A busy stretch for the Boston Celtics continues when they bring a six-game winning streak into Monday night’s home bout with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Jaylen Brown (knee), Al Horford (back) and Malcolm Brogdon (hamstring) were all out with injuries on Saturday, but Jayson Tatum’s season-high 43 points led the way as the Celtics were 117-108 winners at Detroit.

“If you want to get to where you want to get to, it has to be a player-led team,” Celtics interim coach Joe Mazzulla said. “They all came together and understood what was needed to win. … It started with (Marcus) Smart at both ends of the floor and Jayson. The entire team took ownership of the game.”

With or without injuries to the supporting cast, Tatum has been the driving force behind Boston’s 10-3 start. His 420 points in 13 games (32.3 per game) lead the NBA. His average during the team’s current six-game winning streak is even higher (34.8) on 47.0 percent shooting.

“This is definitely the best I’ve ever felt to start a season,” Tatum said. “It kind of feels like how I felt like I was playing towards the end of last season when we really went on that run in the playoffs. It feels great to start a season like this because I definitely know what it feels like to be on the other side.”

Tatum, who scored 28 points in the second half on Saturday, also supplied 10 rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block.

The team effort also included 19 points from Grant Williams, as well as 18 and 10 assists from Smart.

“Overall, our offense is just better,” Tatum said. “Our attention to detail in watching film, managing those late-game offensive situations, and being intentional about what we want to do and (which opponent) we’re trying to put into action.”

The Thunder have curbed a four-game skid with two triumphs and looks to complete a back-to-back sweep after Sunday’s 145-135 victory over the Knicks in New York.

The Thunder’s 145 points were four points shy of tying a franchise record, following a 132-113 Friday win over Toronto in which eight players scored in double figures for the first time in team history.

“We’re playing the right way,” Shai Gilgeous-Alexander said. “When we’re playing unselfish, fast and for each other, things like that happen.”

Gilgeous-Alexander led the way with 37 points on Sunday, eclipsing the 30-point mark for the eighth time, while adding eight assists, three steals and two blocks.

“He sees the bigger picture at a pretty elite rate for a young player,” said Thunder coach Mark Daigneault, a Massachusetts native.

Josh Giddey (24 points, 12 assists, 10 rebounds) was also impressive, joining Wilt Chamberlain as the only players in NBA history to record triple-doubles in each of their first two games at Madison Square Garden.

“He really used effort to try to get himself on track and I thought that was very encouraging,” Daigneault said. “Ever since he’s done that, he’s been back in a good way.”

Oklahoma City’s 110.7 defensive rating ranks 15th in the NBA, and Monday’s meeting in Boston will pit them against the Celtics’ league-best offense (119.5 points per game).

Boston won both meetings with Oklahoma City last season, with Tatum leading the team in scoring.

NFL News: Cardinals TE Zach Ertz leaves with knee injury

Arizona Cardinals tight end Zach Ertz left Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams with a knee injury and was ruled questionable to return.

Ertz made a catch in the first quarter and was brought down by a pair of Rams defenders before he began to favor his knee. He went to the sideline and was later taken by a cart to the locker room as the first quarter was coming to a close.

Ertz’s 12-yard catch off a pass from Colt McCoy was his lone reception of the game.

McCoy also left briefly during the third quarter with a left leg injury but returned to the game. McCoy started Sunday’s game for an injured Kyler Murray (hamstring).

Acquired in a trade from the Philadelphia Eagles last season, Ertz had 46 receptions for 394 yards and four touchdowns this season entering Sunday. In 10 seasons, the three-time Pro Bowl selection has 681 receptions for 7,235 yards and 45 touchdowns.

Dillon Brooks led Memphis with 19 points, while Tyus Jones added 17, Santi Aldama had 15 and Steven Adams tallied 12 points with 10 rebounds. David Roddy scored 11 points off the bench.

Memphis was held to a season-low point total and played without leading scorers Ja Morant (left ankle soreness) and Desmond Bane (right toe soreness).

Kyle Kuzma chipped in nine points and 11 rebounds for the Wizards, who avenged a 103-97 loss to Memphis on Nov. 6.

Washington was in control for much of the second half and held an eight-point advantage after three quarters. The Wizards stretched their lead to 93-80 on Porzingis’ step-back 3 with 7:29 remaining.

Memphis cut the deficit to 100-92 with 1:27 left before Porzingis made two foul shots to secure the win.

Both teams struggled offensively to open the game. The Wizards led 23-19 at the end of the first quarter after both teams shot under 40 percent under the field.

Memphis moved ahead by nine with 4:26 left in the second quarter before Porzingis hit consecutive 3-pointers during an 11-0 run to give Washington a 49-47 lead. The Wizards were up 55-51 at the break.

Porzingis made five 3-pointers and scored 19 points in the first half to lead the Wizards, who were 11 of 20 (55 percent) from beyond the arc for the half.

Washington played its fourth straight game without leading scorer Bradley Beal, who was held out as he reconditions following health and safety protocol.

NFL News: Titans shake off slow start, push past Broncos

Ryan Tannehill was 19-of-36 passing for 255 yards and two touchdowns, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine had five receptions for 119 yards and two scores, and the Tennessee Titans rallied to defeat the Denver Broncos 17-10 at Nashville on Sunday.

Derrick Henry was held to 53 yards rushing on 19 carries for the Titans (6-3).

Russell Wilson was 21-of-42 passing for 286 yards, a TD to rookie Jalen Virgil and an interception for Denver (3-6). The Broncos played most of the game without wide receiver Jerry Jeudy after he suffered a left-ankle injury on Denver’s first offensive snap of the game.

The Broncos, coming off a bye week after defeating the Jacksonville Jaguars at London on Oct. 30, finally ended a scoreless game following nine straight punts. On third-and-6 from his own 34, Wilson found Virgil wide open down the left sideline, and he finished a 66-yard TD on his first NFL catch to give Denver a 7-0 lead with 8:21 left in the second quarter.

Tennessee went three-and-out on the next possession, and the Broncos drove to the Titans’ 21 before settling for a 39-yard field goal from Brandon McManus for a 10-0 advantage.

Tennessee finally was able to sustain a drive on the ensuing possession. Tannehill led the Titans on a 13-play, 75-yard drive capped by his 9-yard touchdown pass to Westbrook-Ikhine with 12 seconds left in the half.

The teams traded punts to open the third quarter before Tennessee struck quickly on its second possession of the second half.

Tannehill handed the ball off to Henry, who pitched it back to Tannehill. The QB hit Westbrook-Ikhine with a 63-yard TD pass to give the Titans a 14-10 lead.

The Broncos got a break when they recovered Malik Willis’ fumble at their 34 midway through the fourth quarter but couldn’t move the ball and punted for the ninth time on the day.

Tannehill connected with Chigoziem Okonkwo on a 41-yard pass to set up Randy Bullock’s 35-yard field goal with 2:59 left.

Denver drove to the Tennessee 21 in the final minute, but a sack on third down and a goal-line interception by Terrance Mitchell sealed the victory.
