0

The Portland Timbers loaned forward Nathan Fogaca to USL squad San Antonio FC on Thursday for the remainder of the 2023 season.

This season, Fogaca has appeared in 18 matches (six starts) across all competitions for the Timbers, recording one goal and three assists — including one goal and two assists in 16 MLS matches (five starts).

The 24-year-old debuted for the club in 2022, registering two goals in 12 appearances (five starts) across all competitions.

The Brazilian striker initially signed with the Timbers 2, or T2, the organization’s reserve squad in MLS Next Pro, on April 22, 2022, via transfer from Brazilian club Coritiba.

The Timbers also announced Thursday that forward Jaroslaw Niezgoda had successful anterior cruciate ligament reconstructive surgery on his right knee. The procedure was performed by Dr. Richard Edelson in Portland.

The 28-year-old Poland native was injured Aug. 20 against Houston Dynamo FC and will miss the rest of the season with his return approximately in nine months. He played in 20 games, making five starts and scoring one goal.

Niezgoda also torn his ACL in November 2020.

MLS News: Red Bulls sign 15-year-old F Julian Zakrzewski Hall

0

The New York Red Bulls signed 15-year-old forward Julian Zakrzewski Hall to a homegrown MLS contract.

The first-team deal announced on Thursday runs through 2026 and includes an option for 2027.

The Red Bulls Academy product is the second-youngest homegrown signing in Red Bulls history.

“We are very excited to add Julian to our roster for this season and also the long-term,” said NYRB head of sport Jochen Schneider. “Julian has had a very good season, not just at the Academy level, but the MLS NEXT Pro level as well and he has demonstrated that he has the qualities to succeed in our system.”

Hall most recently played for New York Red Bulls II in MLS NEXT Pro, appearing in seven matches this season. He became the youngest goal scorer in that club’s history (15 years, 73 days) when he tallied against New England Revolution II on June 4.

“We have seen very good things from Julian over the last calendar year,” said Red Bulls head coach Troy Lesesne. “Julian is a very promising young striker that has a lot of potential and we are excited to help him to continue to grow.”

A New York City native, Hall scored five goals and was named MVP of this year’s U-15 MLS NEXT Cup. He also won the GA Cup Golden Boot in 2023 with four goals.

Billionaire Bill Gates Bets Big On Bud Light, buys 1.7 million shares for almost 100 million dollars

Billionaire Bill Gates believes that the famous beer Bud Light can make a comeback despite its slump due to several factors. The founder of Microsoft has bought 1.7 million shares of Anheuser-Busch, the maker of Bud Light and other popular brands, through his foundation.

According to a regulatory filing with the SEC, the 67-year-old tech billionaire bought the shares through the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation, in the second quarter of 2023. The assets of the foundation are reportedly worth $69 billion.

The stock price of Anheuser-Busch has been falling through the year, down approximately 7 percent so far. It fell by 2 percent after Bill Gates bought the stock through his philanthropic foundation. So, it appears as if the billionaire is looking at long term gains.

In August, Anheuser-Busch reported a fall of 10 percent in its revenues in the U.S. However, the beer company performed well in Canada making its fall of sales a local issue.

Modelo has overtaken Bud Lite sales in the U.S., by a small margin according to data by NIQ. Modelo Especial holds 8.34 percent share of dollars spent on beer while Bud Light has a $8.28 share through August 12, on a year-to-date basis.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates has said in the past that he is not a beer drinker. However, he has bought shares of beer companies, earlier as well. The Bill & Melinda Gates foundation has also acquired shares of the parent of the popular Heineken beer called Heineken Holding. It acquired almost $1 billion worth of stocks of the Dutch beer company.

Bud Light was once the most popular beer in the U.S., but lost favor after it was promoted by Dylan Mulvaney. It has been trying to regain its market share. The beer brand recently launched a new ad campaign with several NFL teams. It is launching a promotion called “Easy to Sunday” and offers football fans a chance to win prizes when they purchase exclusive Bud Light cans.

Simone Biles has eye on 2024 Paris Olympics

0

Gold-medal winning gymnast Simone Biles said she is targeting the 2024 Paris Olympics after a two-year hiatus from the sport.

Biles, 26, told NBC’s “TODAY” show on Thursday that she spent her time off focusing on both her mental and physical health. She also married longtime boyfriend Jonathan Owens, who plays for the Green Bay Packers, and found time to train to compete in the U.S. Gymnastics Championships in San Jose, Calif., last month. She won her record eighth all-around title.

After a disappointing turn at the 2020 Tokyo Games, where she was expected to win multiple medals, she said she has a different approach to gymnastics.

“I think I have to take care of myself a little bit more and listen to my body and make sure that I’m making time for the important things in life,” she said. “Before it was just like ‘go go go’ and then making time after.”

“This time around it’s being intentional, going to therapy, making sure everything is aligned so that I can do my best in the gym, be a good wife, good daughter, good friend, all the good things.”

Biles made her Olympics debut in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and won gold in the all-around, team, vault and floor, and bronze on the beam. But she suffered from a case of the “twisties” — a feeling of being lost in the air — in Tokyo. She pulled out of some individual events and went home with a silver medal in the team event and a bronze on the balance beam.

Still, she said Thursday she has the fire to try to qualify for one more Olympic team.

“Right now I would say that’s the path I would love to go,” she said of Paris.

NHL News: Sens sign Jake Sanderson to 8-year, $64.4M extension

The Ottawa Senators signed defenseman Jake Sanderson to an eight-year, $64.4 million extension.

The deal announced Wednesday night includes a 10-team no trade clause for the final three seasons. It will take effect with the 2024-25 season.

Sanderson, 21, was the No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft.

He made his NHL debut last season and posted 32 points (four goals, 28 assists) in 77 games.

“Jake’s transition to the pro game has been flawless,” Ottawa general manager Pierre Dorion said. “He’s a very mature young man who demonstrates a routine and skillful ability to play important minutes with poise. An effortless skater who holds himself to a high standard, he has the talent to be one of the best all-around defensemen in the NHL for years to come.

Sanderson led the Senators with 147 blocks and was named to the league’s All-Rookie Team.

PGA News: Mets’ Steve Cohen buys the fourth team in TGL

0

New York Mets owner Steve Cohen has purchased the fourth team in TGL, a golf league backed by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy that is set to launch in January.

Cohen’s team will operate in the New York market, joining franchises in Los Angeles, Boston and Atlanta. Cohen Private Ventures, Cohen’s family office, will manage this team, which does not yet have a name.

TMRW Sports, a firm created by Woods, McIlroy and media executive Mike McCarley, formed TGL.

“We’re excited to partner with TMRW Sports and represent New York as a founding TGL team,” Cohen said in a statement Thursday. “As golf continues to grow in popularity, there’s a demand for enhanced access to the sport and the world’s top players. TGL’s primetime schedule will offer an up-close, fast-paced, and innovative take on the sport that will appeal to traditional golf and new fans alike. We’re excited to be a part of TGL and build a team that makes New York proud.”

Andrew B. Cohen, who has no relation to Steve Cohen, will be a minority investor for the New York-based team.

“It’s an innovative concept that combines technology, data and a competitive team format in primetime on Mondays,” said Andrew B. Cohen, the co-founder of Cohen Private Ventures. “Given the way golf is played now, both in simulators and on the course, I think it’s going to combine all those elements.”

Financial specifics of the deal were not released.

All six teams in TGL will hold a 3 percent stake in the league while also engaging in league-wide revenue sharing, according to a report from Sportico.

TGL is a virtual league, with each team featuring three PGA Tour players. Those squads will compete head-to-head in 18-hole match play. The regular season will consist of 15 two-hour matches before the semifinals, and a final is held to wrap up the campaign.

All matches will be played at a facility currently being built on Palm Beach State College’s campus in Florida. The Los Angeles team is owned by Alexis Ohanian and Venus and Serena Williams, Fenway Sports Group owns the Boston squad, and AMB Sports & Entertainment, run by Arthur Blank, will oversee Atlanta’s franchise.

“We obviously want to be in the right media markets, and in the right areas where fanbases will be able to lean into supporting their team and some natural rivalries that exist amongst fans in other sports,” McCarley said. “That points you to some of these major markets. So it was a factor, but not the only factor. The quality of the ownership group is also very important as well.”

LPGA News: China’s Ruixin Liu plays better than she feels, leads in Cincinnati

0

China’s Ruixin Liu shot a bogey-free 7-under-par 65 to lead by one stroke Thursday after the first round of the Kroger Queen City Championship in Cincinnati.

Liu had withdrawn because of evere allergies after a first-round 72 last week of the LPGA Tour’s Portland (Ore.) Classic. She said Thursday she was feeling somewhat better at Kenwood Country Club’s Kendale Course.

“I’m still a little not clear today,” Liu said. “I don’t know how I did this good, but it (happened) and I’m very happy to take it.”

Liu carded birdies at Nos. 2, 3, 6, 7, 9, 11 and 13. She credited her putter “just rolling great” until difficulty at the par-5 No. 12, where she settled for par.

“That’s the only bad hole I played today because my second shot was only like 18 feet to the hole for eagle and I three-putt that one,” Liu said. “So that’s the only not-so-good hole today.”

Four players are tied for second place at 6-under 66: Taiwain’s Peiyun Chien, Elizabeth Szokol, Dottie Ardina of the Philippines and Sweden’s Linnea Strom. Szokol was bogey free, while the other three each had one bogey blemishing their scorecards.

“I’m hitting it a lot better off the tee, which is great,” Szokol said. “I hit a lot of fairways today. I think I only missed one fairway, so just giving myself a lot of opportunities for good wedge shots in and iron shots in, and that’s helped a lot.”

Six players are in a pack at 5-under 67, including Emily Kristine Pedersen of Denmark and Charley Hull of England, who each got an eagle at No. 12 that Liu wanted.

“Just hit a nice drive, rescue wood onto the green, and holed like a 30-foot putt for my eagle,” Hull said.

Defending champion Ally Ewing shot 3-under 69 and is tied for 20th. Ewing had a relatively uneventful front nine with eight pars and a birdie on the par-3 eighth hole. She registered birdies at No. 12, 14 and 16, with a bogey at the par-4 No. 13 wedged in between.

First-round leader Liu was asked about her approach to the second round on Friday.

“Well, I don’t want to give myself too much expectation because physically I don’t feel great,” she said, “so I’m just going to take a good break, try to sleep good, and try to do the same thing tomorrow.”

EPGA News: Back a non-issue, Rory McIlroy ‘in the tournament’ with 3-under at Irish Open

Rory McIlroy rode five birdies to a pain-free opening round of 69 at the Irish Open on Thursday, declaring himself “in the tournament” and over a recent back injury.

McIlroy birdied his final two holes at The K Club in Straffan, County Kildare, Ireland, to overcome rust and two bogeys in a round he summarized as “a bit of a struggle.”

“I think the two birdies in the last two holes sort of glossed over what was a pretty average day. Didn’t really feel great with anything. In fairness, I actually felt pretty good over the putter which is nice,” McIlroy said. “It’s hard to say I’m rusty when I’ve only had a week off but I just haven’t had a chance to practice much. And I just hit a few loose shots out there. Managed my game well and scraped it around in 3-under which is nice and sort of gets me in the tournament.”

McIlroy, 34, has been dealing with an ailing back since a workout prior to the Tour Championship. He won the last Irish Open at The K Club seven years ago.

The Northern Irishman said this week his back was “90, 95 percent” and doesn’t limit him. Asked Thursday if his back had any impact on his round, McIlroy offered a decisive answer.

“Not at all,” he said. “It’s more that I have not been able to hit a ton of balls. I’m hitting good shots but as you know it’s all about knowing your patterns and where you’re missing it and where to aim and where not to aim and just a little unsure over a couple shots but again overall I managed myself well today and got it around.”

McIlroy said he plans to follow his typical practice routine Thursday afternoon, returning to the range and putting green in search of his rhythm. With enough work, McIlroy said he would be more comfortable in the second round Friday.

“I think more than anything trusting yourself, trusting your swing, trusting your ability to swing the way you want to swing, all that sort of stuff,” he said of the impact of limited practice time. “I haven’t practiced that much or hit a lot of balls.

“You get a little more comfortable knowing if you’re missing it right or you’re missing it left, where to aim, where not to aim. I just haven’t played a ton over the last 10 days and sort of out of the rhythm of that. Hopefully as the week progresses I can get a little more comfortable.”
