MLB News: Mariners aim for series split vs. Rays

The Seattle Mariners have charged up the standings in the second half of the season, but their bullpen is starting to show signs of fatigue.

The Mariners should have their highest-leverage relievers available when they look for a split of their four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Andres Munoz and Matt Brash have not appeared in Seattle’s last two games after each pitched in three straight contests. Both were watching from the bullpen on Saturday when the Rays won 7-5 on Yandy Diaz’s walk-off, two-run homer off Tayler Saucedo in the ninth inning.

The victory moved Tampa Bay (87-56) to 7 1/2 games ahead of Seattle (79-63) and the Toronto Blue Jays (79-63) for the first American League wild-card spot.

Seattle manager Scott Servais said managing his relievers’ workload and the team’s playoff chase can be a delicate balancing act.

“The challenges that lie ahead, we have (20) games to go — every game is really important,” Servais said. “I say that, and you don’t want to put anybody in danger or anything like that. You need all these guys clicking as the season goes along.”

Servais also is keeping an eye on his young starting rotation. Right-hander Bryce Miller (8-4, 3.83 ERA) will get the nod in the series finale on Sunday. Logan Gilbert will pitch Monday against the Los Angeles Angels, while Bryan Woo was pushed back three days to start on Tuesday.

“Just trying to manage the situation as best we can to keep our young guys going because they’re so vital to what we do,” Servais said.

Miller received a no-decision last Tuesday, when he allowed one run over five innings against the Cincinnati Reds. The rookie will face Tampa Bay for the second time this season after giving up two runs over 3 1/3 innings on June 30.

The Rays will counter with right-hander Zach Eflin (13-8, 3.47), who had mixed results against the Boston Red Sox last Tuesday. He gave up three runs over five innings while throwing 89 pitches in a no-decision.

“I felt butt naked, stranded on an island somewhere in the middle of the ocean,” Eflin said. “I didn’t really know what I was doing. I could not figure out my mechanics. I couldn’t get ahead of guys.”

Eflin has issued one walk or less in 13 consecutive starts dating to June 28.

Eugenio Suarez is hitless in nine at-bats against Eflin, who is facing Seattle for the second time in his career. He allowed three runs over six innings against the Mariners on May 10, 2017, as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Rays boast one of the majors’ best hitters in the late innings in Diaz, who is batting .376 (47-for-125) in the seventh inning or later.

“I didn’t know about those stats, but it’s good to know it’s out there,” Diaz said via an interpreter after Saturday’s game. “Seems like in moments of tension is when I kind of relax and focus a little more.”

Tampa Bay is monitoring the status of third baseman Isaac Paredes, who was hit by a pitch on his right wrist in the fourth inning of Saturday’s contest. Paredes exited the game and is listed as day-to-day with a right hand contusion after X-rays came back negative.

Paredes has been hit by a pitch 20 times this season, which ranks as the second-highest total in the majors.

NAS News: Denny Hamlin takes elimination event in Bristol

Denny Hamlin did not let the Bristol boos bother him Saturday night.

The Joe Gibbs Racing driver dominated the second half of Saturday’s Bass Pro Shops Night Race and won the elimination event of NASCAR’s Round of 16 at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee.

Hamlin defeated Kyle Larson by 2.437 seconds in the cutoff race to win for the third time this season and advance to the three-race Round of 12 that begins at Texas Motor Speedway next Sunday.

“Hey, everybody likes a winner, right?” said Hamlin to the fans as the BMS crowd rained boos after his 51st Cup win and third at the half-mile track. “Hey, I beat your favorite driver.”

He said he feels this year is a championship one for him and his No. 11 team.

“It’s our year. I just feel like we’ve got it all put together. We got the speed at every type of race track. Nothing can stop us at this point,” he said.

Christopher Bell, Chris Buescher and Ty Gibbs rounded out the top-five finishers in the short-track race that saw six cautions and one major incident that affected the postseason standings.

However, four drivers saw their title hopes dashed in the 500-lapper around the high-banked, 0.533-mile track in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains of east Tennessee.

In a quartet led by defending 2022 Cup Series champion Joey Logano, 2014 title winner Kevin Harvick, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Michael McDowell were eliminated from championship contention.

Logano’s chance of repeating as champion came to an end on Lap 262 after a restart. His No. 22 Team Penske Ford was collected and suffered major damage after Corey LaJoie’s Chevrolet slid up into traffic after a spin.

“We just weren’t fast enough,” Logano said. “You go down here a lap in the back at Bristol … and you get caught up in stuff. It was our own fault. We didn’t go fast enough with our Mustang.”

In the 125-lap Stage 1, polesitter Bell paced the pack before AJ Allmendinger banged the wall to bring out the first caution on Lap 69. Austin Cindric’s Ford smacked Allmendinger’s No. 16 as it came down the track.

After losing the lead during the first round of pit stops, Bell regained the top spot and claimed the first segment’s bonus points.

Rain created a 20-minute red-flag condition on the 500-lap event, but Bell soon picked up right where he left off and set a strong pace until he was passed by Larson, who won the Round of 16’s opening race with a win at Darlington Raceway.

However, Bell battled back and earned more bonus points with his second stage win and fourth of 2023.

CHAMP News: Steve Stricker leads at Sanford Invitational, John Daly lurking

Steve Stricker continued his run toward a second consecutive victory at the Sanford Invitational, building a one-shot lead after two rounds at Sioux Falls, S.D.

Stricker shot a 4-under-par 66 on Saturday and moved to 12-under 128 for the tournament. Stricker, who also won the event in 2018, in addition to his 2022 title, has never finished out of the top six in four previous visits.

Joe Durant and David Toms were tied for second place at 11 under, while fan favorite John Daly was tied for fourth at 10 under, along with Robert Karlsson of Sweden and K.J Choi of South Korea, who shared the first-round lead with Stricker.

Germany’s Alex Cejka was alone in seventh place at 9 under.

After he was disappointed with his finish in the first round, with three pars and a bogey on his final four holes, Stricker was 3 under on the back nine Saturday. But his eagle 3 at the par-5 12th hole was offset by a bogey at No. 14. In the first round, his bogey came at No. 17.

“I’m trying not to complicate things and just come out and do what I do — what I know that I do well: chip, putt, do the little things well, keep control of the ball,” Stricker said. “Some days it’s easier than others and some shots are easier than others. I didn’t pull them all off today, but I scrambled well.”

Stricker birdied two of his last three holes to move into sole possession of the lead, with his birdie putt at No. 18 moving him in front.

“They’re making a lot of birdies, and so the more that I can make the better,” Stricker said. “Yeah, I knew that (putt at 18) was to take the lead, and that’s important. I want the lead going into tomorrow. Hopefully I can put together a good run tomorrow.”

Durant (64 on Saturday) had two bogeys on the front nine but was 4 under on the back, including his own eagle 3 at No. 12. Toms (66) was 4 under over his final 10 holes to stay near the top of the leaderboard.

“Got to go out there and play really well,” Toms said of his Sunday plans. “Depending on what the wind does tomorrow, if it lays down a little bit it’ll be a shootout and a lot of fun for the fans.”

Daly, whose only Champions Tour win came in 2017, topped his opening-round 66 with a 6-under 64 on Saturday that included a pair of eagles at the par-5 fourth hole and at No. 12. After moving to 6 under with a birdie at No. 13, Daly finished the day with five consecutive pars.

“It is great,” Daly said when asked how he enjoyed his round with fans cheering his every move. “I made putts the last two days and I don’t think I made hardly any eagles this year. To have two out there today really helped. I’m hitting the ball pretty good, playing smart. I’ve got to make putts and I made a few.”

NCAAF News: No. 8 Washington pummels Tulsa, 43-10

Michael Penix Jr. completed 28 of 38 passes for 409 yards and three touchdowns as No. 8 Washington defeated Tulsa 43-10 in a nonconference game Saturday in Seattle.

Wide receivers Ja’Lynn Polk and Rome Odunze rushed for touchdowns for the Huskies (2-0).

Jalen McMillan made eight receptions for 120 yards and a touchdown, and Odunze had seven catches for 107 yards and another score as the Huskies amassed 563 yards of total offense.

Tulsa redshirt freshman quarterback Cardell Williams, making his first start because Braylon Braxton was nursing an ankle injury suffered in the season opener, didn’t make it through the first half. Williams was 6-of-14 passing for 65 yards and an interception before being replaced by Roman Fuller.

Fuller, who was 12 of 18 for 85 yards, guided the Golden Hurricane (1-1) to their lone touchdown drive, hitting tight end Luke McGary for a 15-yard score on a fourth-and-5 play with 11:12 remaining.

Jordan Ford, Bill Jackson and Anthony Watkins all gained more than 50 yards on the ground as the Golden Hurricane rushed 40 times for 168 yards.

The Huskies took a 22-3 halftime lead as Penix threw two touchdown passes. The lead might have been larger if not for some uncharacteristic mistakes by UW’s receiving corps, considered one of the deepest in the country.

Penix capped the opening drive with a 2-yard TD pass to Odunze.

Tulsa responded with a 44-yard field goal by Chase Meyer to make it 7-3.

Polk scored on a 27-yard end around on the Huskies’ second drive.

Washington’s next possession ended with an interception in the end zone as a receiver got turned around. On UW’s next drive, McMillan scored on a 9-yard slant pattern, with a two-point conversion making it 22-3.

The Huskies had their final possession of the half end when McMillan fumbled at Tulsa’s 19-yard line following a catch.

Penix was 16 of 23 for 222 yards in the half despite three dropped passes.

Penix hit Germie Bernard for a 7-yard touchdown pass on the Huskies’ opening drive of the second half to make it 29-3.

Odunze scored on a 14-yard end around on UW’s next possession.

Backup QB Dylan Morris guided Washington to its final score, a 1-yard TD run by Daniyel Ngata.

NCAAF News: Syracuse wins one-sided affair over Western Michigan, 48-7

Garrett Shrader threw for 286 yards and one touchdown, ran for another score, and LeQuint Allen tallied on three short runs as host Syracuse demolished Western Michigan 48-7 on Saturday afternoon.

Shrader played just the first half, completing 19 of 30 passes and leading the Orange (2-0) to points on all of their possessions before intermission. Freshman Donovan Brown made three catches for 89 yards, including an 86-yard touchdown, and Isaiah Jones and Umari Hatcher had five receptions apiece, for 86 and 83 yards, respectively.

The Broncos’ Jalen Buckley carried eight times for 87 yards, 75 of them on the second play from scrimmage. He burst through the line and down the right side to give Western Michigan (1-1) a 7-0 lead just 30 seconds into the first quarter.

Buckley ran for 194 yards on 30 carries in Western Michigan’s season-opening 35-17 win over St. Francis (Pa.) on Aug. 31.

Western Michigan’s Jack Salopek was 15 of 22 passing for 110 yards with one interception, which Jason Simmons Jr. brought back 84 yards for a touchdown on the final play of the first half, making the score 45-17 at the break.

Allen’s first touchdown, from 1 yard out, gave Syracuse the lead at 10-7 with 8:55 left in the first period.

After Western Michigan’s early strike, it punted five straight times, and the Orange kept scoring quickly. Brown’s touchdown catch was followed by Shrader’s 18-yard scoring rush early in the second quarter, and then TD runs of 1 and 2 yards by Allen.

Brady Denaburg of Syracuse added field goals of 36 and 33 yards in the first and third quarters, respectively.

The Orange, which piled up 677 total yards in whipping Colgate on Sept. 2, amassed 496 more on Saturday — 343 in the air between Shrader and backup Carlos Del Rio-Wilson.

Western Michigan managed 318 total yards but also hurt itself with nine penalties for 99 yards.

Both teams have road games against Big Ten opponents next week. Western Michigan meets Iowa while Syracuse travels to Purdue.

NCAAF News: Tyler Van Dyke’s 5 TD passes help Miami defeat No. 23 Texas A&M

Tyler Van Dyke fired a career-high five touchdown passes — three of them to Jacolby George — leading host Miami to a 48-33 win over No. 23 Texas A&M on Saturday afternoon.

Miami All-American safety Kamren Kinchens, who had one interception and a fumble recovery, was carted off the field on a stretcher with 1:58 left in the game after a big hit and airlifted to a nearby hospital.

Van Dyke completed 21 of 30 passes for 374 yards and no interceptions to lead Miami (2-0).

Brashard Smith added a 98-yard kickoff return for Miami, and Xavier Restrepo had six receptions for 126 yards.

The Aggies (1-1) were led by their special teams, quarterback Casey Weigman and running back Amari Daniels.

On specials, Texas A&M blocked a kick and recovered a fumbled punt, leading to two touchdowns. Weigman completed 31 of 53 passes for 336 yards and two touchdowns, although he suffered the first two interceptions of his career. Daniels, a Miami native, rushed for 62 yards and one touchdown. But he lost a fumble that led to a Miami touchdown.

Texas A&M led 10-0 early in the first quarter on Weigman’s 3-yard run and Randy Bond’s 24-yard field goal.

But the Hurricanes rallied to take a 21-17 lead at halftime.

One of Miami’s biggest plays of the first half came when Van Dyke floated a deep 52-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Horton down the left sideline, cutting the Hurricanes’ deficit to 17-14.

After two missed field goals — Miami from 54 and Texas A&M from 42 — the Hurricanes got the ball with 53 seconds left in the half and ended up with Van Dyke’s 11-yard TD pass to George. That capped a six-play, 75-yard drive.

Bond’s 28-yard field goal on the first possession of the second half cut Miami’s lead to 21-20. Just before the field goal, the Aggies were going to go for it on fourth-and-1, but a false start changed the plan.

On the ensuing kickoff, Smith went untouched to give Miami a 28-20 lead. Restrepo had the play’s final big block, on Bond.

Weigman got picked off when Ainias Smith slipped, and the throw went right to Kinchens. That ended a no-pick streak of 179 attempts, and it led to Andres Borregales’ 34-yard field goal.

But on third-and-1 from Miami’s 19-yard line, Weigman tossed a play-action TD pass to Earnest Crownover. The Aggies went for two, but a fumbled snap led to an incomplete pass, and the score held at 31-26.

In the fourth quarter, Miami cornerback Jaden Davis forced the fumble on Daniels, recovered by Kinchens. That led to Van Dyke’s 3-yard TD pass to George for a 38-26 lead with 12:37 left.

Andres Borregales gave Miami a 41-26 lead by drilling a 50-yard field goal with 6:28 remaining.

Texas A&M responded with Weigman — who took a big hit on the play — flipping a 9-yard TD pass to Noah Thomas, cutting Miami’s lead to 41-33 with 5:02 left.

Miami put the game away on Van Dyke’s 64-yard TD pass to George for a 48-33 lead with 2:36 left.
