U.S. Senator Gold Bar Bob Menendez and his wife Nadine were indicted on bribery charges, on Friday. Prosecutors claim that the New Jersey senator and his wife took bribes in the form of cash, gold bars and a luxury car. Menendez was expected to use his influence in foreign affairs in a manner that could benefit the government in Egypt and others after receiving such gifts.

On Friday, the indictment against Menendez and others was unsealed at the Manhattan federal court. The 69-year-old Democratic senator and his 56-year-old wife Nadine have been named in the indictment. Others who have also been indicted include Fred Daibes, a real estate developer, Wael Hanna and Joseph Uribe.

Federal investigators allege Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., received bribes in the form of gold bars.

There was a yearlong investigation into the couple. Prosecutors said that a search conducted on the senator’s home yielded gold bars worth $100,000 and $480,000 cash hidden around the home. This is the second time that Menendez is facing criminal charges, though they are unrelated.

Federal investigators allege they found money stuffed in Menendez’s jackets when they executed a search warrant in June 2022. Southern District of New York

Menendez has to step down from his post as Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Senate Democratic caucus rules state that a member has to step down from a leadership position if he or she is charged with a felony.

Jose Uribe and Wael Hana bought a Mercedes-Benz for Sen. Bob Menendez’s wife in return for the Senator interfering in a state criminal prosecution of a Uribe associate. USDC Southern District of New York

Almost six years earlier, the congressman had also faced claims of corruption unrelated to the new charges. He was tried on charges relating to benefitting a Florida eye surgeon. The jury brought back a hung verdict, in this case.

Menendez is facing reelection in 2024. He has a three-decade long career in the U.S. Senate. He is the son of Cuban immigrants and has held office since 1986. He was elected as the Mayor of Union City in New Jersey in 1986. He was a state legislator. He spent 14 years as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. In 2006, he was appointed to a senate seat that was vacated by Sen Jon Corzine, who became the governor of the Garden State.

0

Top-seed Alexander Zverev of Germany advanced to the semifinals of the Chengdu Open at Chengdu, China, by rallying for a 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 victory Sunday over Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia.

Zverev pulled off 13 aces to four for Kecmanovic and had 53 winners against 41 for his opponent to earn a matchup with Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria.

The third-seeded Dimitrov earned a convincing 6-4, 6-1 victory in the quarterfinals against Christopher O’Connell of Australia. Dimitrov won 68 percent of his second-serve points and converted three of his eight break-point chances.

In the other semifinal, Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti will face Roman Safiullin of Russia.

The second-seeded Musetti was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over France’s Arthur Rinderknech. Safiullin moved on when Australia’s Jordan Thompson retired before the second set after Safiullin won the opening set 7-6 (1).

FRIENDLY News: USWNT blanks South Africa in Megan Rapinoe’s finale

Megan Rapinoe, star player and activist, bid farewell to the U.S. women’s national team in a 2-0 victory against South Africa in Chicago on Sunday.

Rapinoe, 38, walked off the field in the 54th minute for the last time for the U.S., but will complete the season for OL Reign of the National Women’s Soccer League.

Trinity Rodman made it 1-0 in the 18th minute on a volley from a cross by Alex Morgan for her sixth international goal. Emily Sonnett’s header in the 49th extended the lead. It was her second goal.

Rapinoe was a two-time Women’s World Cup champion (2015, ‘19), 2012 Olympic gold medalist and 2019 World Player of the Year.

She made her 203rd appearance for the USWNT and ranks 10th in program history with 63 goals and is tied with Abby Wambach for third with 73 assists.

Wearing the captain’s armband, Rapinoe made her final minutes memorable. In the 49th, she aided the goal by Sonnett without officially getting an assist when her corner kick was punched straight to Sonnett. In the 52nd, Rapinoe’s free kick from 25 yards flew inches over the crossbar.

Soon after, she exited to hugs from her teammates and a standing ovation from her fans.

It was the second emotional match for the U.S. in four days after Julie Ertz retired from competitive matches on Thursday following a 3-0 win over South Africa in Cincinnati.

Rapinoe’s final match comes 17 years and 63 days after making her international debut on July 23, 2006. Only three players have had a longer USWNT career: Kristine Lilly (23 years, 94 days), Christie Pearce (18 years, 204 days) and Mia Hamm (17 years, 127 days).

During her career, Rapinoe has been an advocate for social issues including LGBTQ+ rights, racial equality and equal pay for women’s national team players.

The match was the second for interim coach Twila Kilgore after the resignation of Vlatko Andonovski. The U.S. lost in the round of 16 of the 2023 Women’s World Cup, the first time the four-time champions did not reach the semifinals.

NFL News: Giants RB Saquon Barkley (ankle) helped off field

New York Giants star running back Saquon Barkley limped off the field with the help of trainers late in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 31-28 victory over the Arizona Cardinals due to a right ankle injury.

Barkley took a 2-yard carry up the middle and appeared to get his ankle caught under Arizona linebacker Krys Barnes with 1:08 left in the game. He got up gingerly and was hopping to try and keep pressure off the ankle before putting his arms around two trainers and limping off the field.

Medical personnel surrounded Barkley once he got to the bench, where he had his ankle taped.

ESPN reported that Barkley will undergo an MRI on Monday. His ankle was swollen after the game, but it’s believed that the two-time Pro Bowler is dealing with a regular sprain as opposed to a high-ankle sprain, per the report.

Prior to exiting, Barkley rushed for 63 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. He also had six receptions for 29 yards and another score.

In the first two games of the season, Barkley has rushed for 114 yards on 29 carries while adding nine catches for 41 yards. He did not find the end zone in Week 1.

New York is 1-1, and should Barkley miss time, veteran Matt Breida would likely take over as the Giants’ primary running back.

Barkley and the team are on a short week, as New York plays the San Francisco 49ers in Santa Clara, Calif., on Thursday night.

NFL News: Commanders rally, survive Hail Mary TD to shock Broncos 35-33

Sam Howell threw for 299 yards and two touchdowns and Brian Robinson added two touchdown runs in the fourth quarter as the visiting Washington Commanders rallied past the Denver Broncos for a 35-33 win on Sunday.

Russell Wilson gave Denver a chance when he completed a 50-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass to Brandon Johnson, who came down with the tipped ball in the end zone with no time left.

But on the 2-point conversion try, Benjamin St-Juste broke up Wilson’s pass intended for Courtland Sutton to preserve the wild win for Washington (2-0).

The Commanders surrendered touchdowns on the Broncos’ first three possessions and fell behind 21-3 before staging their comeback and denying Sean Payton his first win as coach of the Broncos (0-2).

In his third NFL start — all Washington wins — Howell completed 27 of 39 passes to fuel the Commanders’ rally. Robinson added 87 yards on 18 carries.

For the Broncos, Wilson completed 18 of 32 passes for 308 yards with three touchdowns and an interception.

Wilson sparked Denver early, throwing touchdown passes of 60 yards to rookie Marvin Mims Jr. and 16 yards to Johnson.

But after getting torched early, the Washington defense rose. Jamin Davis forced a tide-turning fumble by Wilson in the second quarter that was recovered by Cody Barton.

Nine plays later on fourth-and-goal, Howell threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Logan Thomas. A two-point conversion run by Robinson and a 49-yard field goal by Joey Slye drew the Commanders to within 21-14 at the half.

Early in the second half, Terry McLaurin rose between two defenders in the end zone to make a sensational 30-yard touchdown reception, tying it 21-21.

Wil Lutz gave Denver a 24-21 lead with a 31-yard field goal. But Washington responded with a 75-yard drive on just six plays to take the lead for good.

A 27-yard run by Robinson and a 36-yard gain on a screen pass to Antonio Gibson set up Robinson’s 2-yard touchdown run to put Washington up 28-24.

Robinson followed with a 15-yard touchdown run that increased the lead to 35-24 with 7:11 left.

Denver followed with a drive to the Washington 1. But Montez Sweat sacked Wilson and later combined with Chase Young on another sack, forcing Denver to settle for a 32-yard field goal by Lutz with 1:50 left.

The Denver defense gave Wilson another chance, stopping Washington on a three-and-out. But St-Juste had the last word.

NFL News: Cowboys blow past Aaron Rodgers-less Jets 30-10

Dak Prescott threw two touchdown passes and Brandon Aubrey kicked five field goals as the Dallas Cowboys blew out a New York team for the second straight week with a 30-10 thrashing of the Jets on Sunday in Arlington, Texas.

Prescott completed 31 of 38 passes for 255 yards in an efficient effort as Dallas improved to 2-0. After a 40-0 blowout of the Giants in Week 1, the Cowboys were more workmanlike but just as good against a Jets team playing without quarterback Aaron Rodgers (Achilles).

Zach Wilson hit on 12 of 27 passes for 170 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions for New York (1-1). His highlight was a 68-yard pass-and-run connection with Garrett Wilson at the 7:12 mark of the second quarter, the first touchdown scored against Dallas in six quarters.

The Jets’ momentum didn’t last long. Prescott hit Luke Schoonmaker on a 1-yard scoring strike to cap a drive of more than five minutes, and Tony Pollard’s 2-point conversion run gave the Cowboys an 18-7 lead.

Austin Seibert’s 34-yard field goal for the Jets with four seconds remaining made it 18-10 at the half.

Dallas pulled away in the second half behind Aubrey, who nailed field goals of 21, 55, 26 and 30 yards to go along with the 35-yarder he made in the second quarter. He became the first Cowboy to make five field goals in a game since Dan Bailey did it in 2013.

Prescott got Dallas off to a fast start by finding Jake Ferguson for a 4-yard touchdown pass at the 9:19 mark of the first quarter, polishing off a 12-play, 75-yard drive. Prescott went 5-for-5 for 41 yards on the march, including a 25-yard connection with CeeDee Lamb. That was the start of a huge day for Lamb, who caught 11 passes on 13 targets for 143 yards.

The Cowboys became the third team since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 to open a season by scoring at least 70 points in their first two games while holding opponents to 10 or fewer.

NFL News: Christian McCaffrey helps 49ers slide past Rams

Christian McCaffrey rushed for 116 yards on 20 carries and scored a touchdown to lead the San Francisco 49ers to a 30-23 win against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday afternoon at Inglewood, Calif.

Quarterback Brock Purdy completed 17 of 25 passes for 206 yards for the 49ers (2-0). He had no interceptions for the second consecutive game.

In the second half, the San Francisco defense kept the Rams (1-1) out of the end zone and forced two turnovers.

Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua had 147 yards on 15 catches, the most by a rookie in a single game in NFL history. He also set an NFL record with 25 receptions through his first two games.

Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford completed 34 of 55 passes for 307 yards with a touchdown and two second-half interceptions.

With the score tied at 17-17, a tipped pass landed in the hands of San Francisco cornerback Isaiah Oliver for Stafford’s first interception of the game.

The 49ers converted the turnover into a 57-yard field goal by Jake Moody for a 20-17 lead with 1:21 left in the third quarter.

Purdy’s 31-yard strike down the sideline to Jauan Jennings led to an 11-yard touchdown run by Deebo Samuel that stretched the lead to 27-17 with 11:28 left in the game.

The Rams scored their first points of the second half on a 48-yard field goal by Brett Maher with 7:13 remaining to cut the lead to 27-20.

The Rams got the ball back with 5:29 left, but Stafford was intercepted by Deommodore Lenoir, and Lenoir returned the ball to the Rams 15 with 4:48 remaining, setting up a 26-yard field goal by Moody for a 30-20 lead with 2:59 left.

Maher kicked a 38-yard field goal as time expired for the 30-23 final.

McCaffrey scored on a 14-yard touchdown run on the opening drive of the game for a 7-0 lead.

The Rams answered with a 43-yard field goal by Maher to make it 7-3 with 1:54 left in the opening quarter.

McCaffrey’s 51-yard run down the sideline set up a 27-yard field goal from Moody to extend the lead to 10-3 with 13:32 left in the first half.

The Rams evened the score at 10 on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Stafford to running back Kyren Williams with 9:49 left in the half.

Williams scored again on a 4-yard run with 1:45 to go in the half to give Los Angeles its first lead at 17-10.

Purdy dove across the goal line on a 1-yard run on the final play of the half to tie the score 17-17.

NFL News: Daniel Jones, Giants rally from 20-0 hole to stun Cardinals

Daniel Jones passed for two touchdowns and ran for one and the visiting New York Giants scored all their points in the second half to defeat the Arizona Cardinals 31-28 on Sunday afternoon in Glendale, Ariz.

Jones completed 26 of 37 passes for 321 yards as the Giants (1-1) bounced back from six scoreless quarters to start the season and outscored the Cardinals (0-2) 17-0 in the fourth quarter.

Jones threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Saquon Barkley and an 11-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Hodgins, then drove New York 56 yards to Graham Gano’s winning 34-yard field goal with 19 seconds remaining.

Joshua Dobbs, filling in for the injured Kyler Murray, passed for 228 yards and one touchdown and James Conner rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown for Arizona.

The Giants, who suffered their worst season-opening loss in a 40-0 defeat to visiting Dallas last Sunday, trailed the Cardinals 20-0 at halftime.

On the first offensive play of the second half, Jones connected with Jalin Hyatt for a 58-yard pass completion. Two plays later Jones’ 14-yard touchdown run gave New York its first points of the season.

On the ensuing possession, the Cardinals answered with Dobbs’ 3-yard touchdown pass to Marquise Brown and Dobbs’ run for a two-point conversion that produced a 28-7 lead.

Barkley’s 1-yard touchdown run pulled the Giants within 28-14 at the end of the third quarter.

Conner ran 4 yards for a touchdown that gave Arizona a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

On the first play of the second quarter, Dobbs scrambled 23 yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead. Later in the quarter, Matt Prater kicked a 37-yard field goal to push the lead to 17-0.

The Giants drove 39 yards to the Arizona 36, but a pass from Jones bounced off Barkley’s hands and Jalen Thompson intercepted it and returned it 35 yards to the New York 34.

Six plays later, Prater kicked a 44-yard field goal that increased the Cardinals’ lead to 20-0 at halftime.

NFL News: Chiefs outlast Jaguars in return of Travis Kelce, Chris Jones

Patrick Mahomes passed for 305 yards and two touchdowns to help the Kansas City Chiefs notch a 17-9 victory over the host Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday afternoon.

Mahomes threw touchdown passes to Skyy Moore and Travis Kelce as the Chiefs (1-1) rebounded from a season-opening 21-20 loss to the Detroit Lions. Mahomes completed 29 of 41 passes with one interception and Kelce caught four passes for 26 yards after missing the opener due to a hyperextended knee.

Kansas City’s Chris Jones and George Karlaftis each recorded 1.5 sacks. It was Jones’ first game since ending his holdout.

The Chiefs had a 399-271 yardage edge while defeating Jacksonville for the eighth straight time, including last season’s 27-20 victory in the AFC divisional round of the playoffs.

Trevor Lawrence completed 22 of 41 passes for 216 yards for the Jaguars (1-1). Christian Kirk grabbed 11 passes for 110 yards, but fellow wideouts Zay Jones and Calvin Ridley each failed to get both feet down on end-zone throws on two occasions apiece.

The Chiefs were sluggish on offense in the first half but opened the third quarter with a seven-play, 81-yard touchdown drive.

Isiah Pacheco began the drive with a 31-yard run and Mahomes converted two third-down throws, including a 9-yard scoring pass to Kelce to make it 14-6 with 11:30 remaining in the third quarter.

The score marked the 47th time Mahomes connected with Kelce on a touchdown pass. That set a new Kansas City record, surpassing the 46 times Len Dawson hooked up with Otis Taylor from 1965-74.

The Jaguars had a stellar opportunity early in the fourth quarter when they had first-and-goal from the Chiefs’ 1-yard line, but they had to settle for Brandon McManus’s 22-yard field goal. Lawrence lost 3 yards on a run, Zay Jones got just one foot down in the end zone on a second-down pass and Calvin Ridley got no feet in on a third-down throw.

Not cashing in was costly as the Chiefs answered with a 13-play, 55-yard drive. Harrison Butker capped it with a 38-yard field goal to make it 17-9 with 8:10 remaining.

The Jaguars made another dash. On fourth-and-12 from the Kansas City 16, Lawrence threw to Ridley in the back of the end zone. Ridley bobbled the ball before corralling it but only had one foot down on the incompletion with 4:18 remaining.

Mahomes and Moore teamed up on a 54-yard pass play with 1:50 left to seal it for the Chiefs, who ran out the clock.

Kansas City led 7-6 at halftime. Mahomes threw a touchdown to Moore, while McManus kicked field goals of 32 and 49 yards for the Jaguars. Jones also had just one foot down in the end zone on a would-be catch early in the second quarter before McManus’ first field goal.

NFL News: Baker Mayfield, Bucs keep Bears at bay

Baker Mayfield was 26-of-34 passing for 317 yards and a touchdown and Mike Evans had six receptions for 171 yards and a score to lift the host Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a 27-17 win against the Chicago Bears on Sunday.

Tampa Bay (2-0) outgained Chicago 437-236 behind a balanced attack that included 34 passing plays and 34 rushing plays.

Chicago fell to 0-2 while losing its 12th consecutive game dating to last season.

The Bucs sacked Bears quarterback Justin Fields six times while limiting him to 211 yards on 16-of-29 passing. Fields had one touchdown and two interceptions while fumbling twice. Joe Tryon-Shoyinka had two sacks for Tampa Bay.

Chicago drew within 20-17 on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Fields to Chase Claypool with 6:17 remaining. The Bears forced a punt on the next Bucs’ possession but Tampa Bay put the game away when Shaquil Barrett intercepted Fields’ screen pass from the end zone and returned it for a 4-yard touchdown.

Tampa Bay capped the first possession of the game with Chase McLaughlin’s 26-yard field goal. The Bears responded quickly and emphatically, covering 75 yards in six plays and 2:46 for a go-ahead touchdown.

Fields scored on a 1-yard run after establishing an early connection with DJ Moore, who had two receptions for 64 yards on the opening drive. His 31-yard catch and run on third down put the Bears inside the Bucs’ 10-yard line.

Chicago’s Rasheem Green blocked McLaughlin’s 40-yard field goal attempt, which set the Bears up at midfield with 14:49 to play in the second quarter. They couldn’t sustain the special teams’ momentum on offense, however, as the Bucs forced Chicago into a three-and-out.

The Bucs went ahead on the next possession, punctuating a four-play, 77-yard touchdown drive with Rachaad White’s 4-yard scoring run with 10:53 left in the second quarter.

The teams traded field goals before the end of the half, as Tampa Bay took a 13-10 lead into intermission.

The Bucs’ White led all rushers with 73 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.

Chicago defensive backs Eddie Jackson (foot) and Jaquan Brisker (illness) left the game in the first half, with Brisker returning after halftime. The Bears already were without Josh Blackwell (hamstring).
