MLB News: A’s RHP Joey Estes set for major league debut vs. title-chasing M’s

After watching one of their top prospects, Joe Boyle, pitch impressively last weekend, the Oakland Athletics will try again when right-hander Joey Estes makes his major league debut Wednesday afternoon in the series finale against the visiting Seattle Mariners.

The 21-year-old will have an opportunity to prevent the Mariners (83-68) from moving into first place in the American League West.

Seattle begins the day tied for second place with the Texas Rangers (83-68), a half-game behind the Houston Astros (84-68). For the third straight day, the Mariners will get a chance to scoreboard-watch the earlier starts for the Rangers at home against the Boston Red Sox, and the Astros at home against the Baltimore Orioles.

Acquired from the Atlanta Braves in the Matt Olson trade before the 2022 season, Estes has pitched in both Double-A and Triple-A in the Oakland organization this year. He posted a 5.23 ERA in seven appearances, including six starts, for Triple-A Las Vegas.

Boyle, who had been Estes’ teammate in Las Vegas, threw three shutout innings in a no-decision against the visiting San Diego Padres on Sunday.

Estes will have to hope for more run support than what the A’s (46-105) have given Boyle, JP Sears and Paul Blackburn in their past three games. After taking a 10-1 loss in Boyle’s debut on Sunday, Oakland has mustered just two runs — both on Tuesday — in back-to-back, one-sided losses to the Mariners.

For the second straight night, one of Oakland’s top hitting prospects added to an impressive season when catcher Shea Langeliers lashed his fourth triple of the season on Tuesday.

Langeliers not only leads the A’s in triples, but only 30 major-leaguers have more than four, including just one catcher — the Philadelphia Phillies’ J.T. Realmuto with five.

“Shea is pretty quick for a catcher. He is athletic,” A’s manager Mark Kotsay said of another of the prospects pried from the Braves in the Olson deal. “It’s pretty impressive for a catcher to lead our team in triples.”

Seeking to continue the home team’s scoring issues will be Seattle right-hander George Kirby (10-10, 3.57 ERA), who has been in a slump of his own. The Mariners are winless in his past four starts, a stretch in which he’s gone 0-2 with a 6.00 ERA.

The good news for Kirby is that he hasn’t lost to the A’s in his two-year career, going 2-0 with a 4.28 ERA in five starts. He pitched a 5-3 win at Oakland on May 4, allowing three runs in seven innings.

The Mariners have out-hit the A’s 20-11 in the series despite getting only one hit from their hottest hitter, Julio Rodriguez, as the slugger tackles the spacious Oakland Coliseum.

Rodriguez had entered the series 16-for-44 (.364) in Oakland before going 1-for-8 the last two nights in a park he believes suits his use-the-entire-ballpark style well.

“I’m not just gonna be a pull hitter,” Rodriguez said. “I feel like I’m able to do damage throughout every field. And with pitchers, I can give them something more to deal with.”

The Mariners will try to send the A’s to their seventh straight loss.

Kate Bingham disease expert says, “The mortality rate of Disease X was compared with the Spanish Flu – Could kill 50 Million”

The mortality rate of Disease X was compared with the Spanish Flu by Kate Bingham, renowned UK health expert and former chair of the UK’s Vaccine Taskforce

Disease X is a concept introduced by WHO to underscore the unpredictable nature of infectious diseases. Disease X represents the possibility of an entirely new pathogen—be it a virus, bacterium, or fungus—emerging in the human population, one with no known treatments or vaccines. In essence, it’s a worst-case scenario that the world’s health experts are all too aware of.

A Chilling Historical Parallel

In her interview, Kate Bingham drew a chilling historical parallel between Disease X and the devastating Spanish Flu of 1919-1920. The Spanish Flu, caused by the H1N1 influenza virus, infected approximately one-third of the world’s population, and claimed the lives of an estimated 50 million people worldwide. It was a catastrophic event that left a deep scar on humanity’s collective memory.

In a recent interview with the Daily Mail, Kate Bingham, a renowned UK health expert and former chair of the UK’s Vaccine Taskforce, raised a chilling alarm about the potential emergence of Disease X. This ominous term, coined by the World Health Organization (WHO), represents an enigmatic, hypothetical pathogen that could potentially trigger a pandemic more devastating than COVID-19. Bingham’s warning has sparked concerns across the globe, reminding us of the importance of preparedness and vigilance in the face of emerging infectious diseases. If the world has to tackle the threat from Disease X, “the world will have to prepare for mass vaccination drives and deliver the doses in record time”, she told the Daily Mail.

WTA News: WTA roundup: Daria Kasatkina moves into second round in Tokyo

0

Sixth-seeded Daria Kasatkina overcame a first-set misstep to record a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win against Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk on Tuesday in the first round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.

Kasatkina’s Russian compatriot Veronika Kudermetova, the tournament’s eighth seed, had an easier time of it in her first-round match. She posted a 6-3, 7-6 (4) win over England’s Harriet Dart.

Also reaching the second round were Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic, Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Greece’s Despina Papamichail and Japan’s Misaki Doi.

Ningbo Open

No. 1 seed Ons Jabeur of Tunisia overcame a stern test from Frenchwoman Diane Parry before securing a 7-6 (3), 7-5 win in a first-round match in Ningbo, China.

Jabeur dispatched Parry in two hours, 16 minutes to advance to face German Tamara Korpatsch, who defeated British qualifier Jodie Burrage, 6-2, 7-6 (1).

While No. 3 Sorana Cirstea of Romania posted a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 win over Claire Liu, fifth-seeded Varvara Gracheva of France and sixth-seeded Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands were not as fortunate. Valeria Savinykh seized a 7-5, 7-5 win over Gracheva and fellow Russian Kamilla Rakhimova notched a 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory over Rus.

ATP News: ATP roundup: Alexander Zverev, Karen Khachanov win titles

0

Top-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany overcame dropping the first set to post a 6-7 (2), 7-6 (5), 6-3 win over unseeded Russian Roman Safiullin in the Chengdu Open final on Tuesday in Chengdu, China.

Zverev, 26, recorded 10 aces to dispatch Safiullin and win the match in two hours, 56 minutes. Zverev captured his first hard-court title since the Nitto ATP Finals in November 2021.

Safiullin, 26, collected 33 winners but was undone, in part, by 15 unforced errors and four double faults.

Zhuhai Championships

No. 1 seed Karen Khachanov captured his fifth tour-level title and first since 2018 with a 7-6 (2), 6-1 win over eighth-seeded Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan in Zhuhai, China.

Khachanov, 27, recorded 34 winners and nine aces to win the match in one hour, 43 minutes. The 15th-ranked Russian was competing in just his second singles tournament since sustaining a stress fracture in his back during his run to the quarterfinals at the French Open in May.

Nishioka, 27, was bidding for his third tour-level title and first since Seoul last year.

MLS News: RSL look to improve playoff positioning, host Dallas FC

0

Real Salt Lake will kick off a critical two-match home swing that could determine their postseason fortunes when they face FC Dallas in Sandy, Utah, on Wednesday night.

Salt Lake (11-10-7, 40 points) finds itself facing a must-win scenario after a recent slide. Only eight points separate second-place LAFC from 11th-place Dallas in the Western Conference. RSL are in sixth, but they can move inside the top four by protecting their home turf against Dallas on Wednesday and Vancouver on Saturday.

“There’s just a couple points that separate the top from the bottom,” Salt Lake coach Pablo Mastroeni said. “We’ve got to take advantage of home, and we’ve got to win these games.”

Winning hasn’t come easy for Real Salt Lake in recent weeks. The club has lost three of its last four matches, getting outscored 7-2 in those setbacks. Losing Pablo Ruiz to a knee injury has robbed RSL of the offensive punch they had during June and July, and Danny Musovski has also been away from the club in a contract dispute, further limiting scoring options.

Cristian Arango accounted for the only goals over Salt Lake’s three recent losses.

Dallas (9-10-8, 35 points) is in an even more desperate position after Seattle forced a 1-1 draw on Saturday. It was the second consecutive home draw for Dallas FC.

The Sounders scored early in the second half to negate a 14th-minute goal from Jader Obrian. Dallas struggled to create chances after halftime, putting little pressure on the attacking third.

“I’ll have to analyze the details of the game because we were a completely different team in the second half,” Dallas FC coach Nico Estevez said. “There was a lack of quality and connection.”

Earning points in Utah will be a challenge, as Dallas hasn’t won on the road since May 13 and is just 2-7-4 away from home this season.

MLS News: Surging Sounders look to take care of business vs. Rapids

0

The Seattle Sounders will be vying for their first five-match unbeaten streak in more than two years when they take on the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday in Commerce City, Colo.

The Sounders (11-9-9, 42 points), sitting in third place in the Western Conference, drew 1-1 with FC Dallas on Saturday to move to 1-0-3 over their past four matches. The franchise went 15 regular-season matches without a blemish from November 2020 to June 2021, but times have not been as kind to Seattle since then.

After missing last year’s MLS Cup playoffs altogether, the Sounders are in fair position with five matches to go. But the conference standings are tightly bunched, with just eight points separating second and 10th place. The top nine teams in each conference make the postseason.

The Sounders know they cannot trip up against the last-place team in the West.

“We’re not overconfident,” Seattle coach Brian Schmetzer said. “We’re not gonna go in there and say, ‘This is gonna be (an) easy three points.'”

Schmetzer said forward Raul Ruidiaz (five goals) has a tight hamstring and missed practice Tuesday, leaving his match status up in the air.

Jordan Morris, who leads Seattle with 10 goals, has seven career goals against Colorado in nine meetings, including playoffs.

On Saturday, Alex Roldan scored his first goal of the season in the 57th minute against Dallas to tie the match.

The Rapids (4-13-10, 22 points) are coming off just their second win since May, ending a 1-10-4 stretch with a 2-1 home victory over Eastern Conference power New England on Saturday.

Colorado had been shut out in nine of its previous 10 matches before Cole Bassett struck in the 48th minute and Calvin Harris doubled the lead in the 62nd. Interim head coach Chris Little was a winner in his debut after the Rapids dismissed Robin Fraser.

One victory doesn’t change the Rapids’ reality, however. They sit at the bottom of the Western standings, and they saw fans protest at the Revolution game in a planned walkout.

The Rapids got a morale boost Tuesday when midfielder Jack Price returned to the training facility. He suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in March and has just started to run again.

“He unifies everybody. He’s a great leader,” Little said. “For us as a coaching staff, having him back around, he’s going to travel with the team. He’s invaluable.”

Bassett leads the Rapids with a mere three goals on the season. The club has scored 18 goals, fewest in the league.

NHL News: Ex-Ducks player Nic Kerdiles killed in motorcycle crash

Former Anaheim Ducks forward Nic Kerdiles was killed in a motorcycle crash. He was 29.

The crash occurred Saturday in Nashville, Tenn.

Police there reported Kerdiles, riding his Indian motorcycle, ran a stop sign, then hit the driver’s side of a BMW SUV, per The Tennessean. Neither driver appeared to be impaired.

Kerdiles was raised in Irvine, Calif., and became the first home-area player from Orange County drafted by the Ducks when they selected him in the 2012 draft.

The second-round pick played two seasons with the Ducks (2016-18), then was traded to Winnipeg, but he never appeared in a Jets uniform.

In his brief career in Anaheim, the forward took part in three games and didn’t record any points.

“We’re heartbroken to hear the news about Nic Kerdiles,” the Ducks posted to social media. “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to his family and loved ones.”

Non-hockey fans knew Kerdiles for his time on the reality show “Chrisley Knows Best.” He formerly was engaged to Savannah Chrisley and appeared on the show that chronicled the adventures of her family.

NHL News: Coyotes jolt Kings in Australia despite ice issues

Clayton Keller collected a goal and an assist to lift the Arizona Coyotes to a 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday at the 2023 NHL Global Series in Melbourne, Australia.

Played in front of a sold-out crowd of 13,097 at Rod Laver Arena, Saturday’s preseason game marked the first time an NHL contest was played in the Southern Hemisphere. The Western Conference rivals will meet again on Sunday in Melbourne.

Saturday’s game did not go off without a hitch, however. Reports and photos circulated on social media of puddles and uneven coloring of the painted lines on the ice.

Previous preseason and regular-season NHL games have been played in Sweden, Finland, the Czech Republic, Russia, Ukraine, Latvia, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Japan.

Logan Cooley, Matias Maccelli, Lawson Crouse and Barrett Hayton each scored a goal and Connor Ingram made 33 saves for Arizona.

Viktor Arvidsson recorded a goal and an assist and Trevor Moore and Adrian Kempe also tallied for the Kings. Pheonix Copley yielded four goals on 16 shots before being replaced by David Rittich, who made three saves in the third period.

PGA News: Tommy Fleetwood looks to etch name in Europe’s Ryder Cup legacy

0

Team Europe’s Tommy Fleetwood recognizes the infusion of youth on the 2023 Ryder Cup team, without the likes of veteran Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Henrik Stenson.

He’s also confident as his side takes on the United States this week at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club outside of Rome.

“You sort of walk into what has been a legacy of — definitely my Ryder Cup, my generation of Ryder Cups has been those guys that were such huge presence on the course and off the course.

“It was honestly the most amazing experience, seeing those guys in that team atmosphere and that team environment.”

The 32-year-old native of Southport, England, is winless on the PGA Tour but finished sixth in FedEx Cup points this season. He made his first tour appearance in 2014 and has seven international victories.

Fleetwood was part of the 2018 European Ryder Cup team that made a big splash with a victory in France. He was 4-1-1 in Paris that year and 4-2-2 overall in two Cup appearances.

“Paris owns a special place in a lot of our hearts and it’s the last Ryder Cup that we won,” Fleetwood said, finding motivation. “And it’s been five years, so it’s actually been quite a long time.”

Fleetwood said Europe has an opportunity to build on the current foundation.

“I think there’s been a natural progression for a few of the guys,” he said. “… There’s a core group of us that have played two or three Ryder Cups now, and that’s not the experience of what those guys had in terms of numbers.

“But I think we’ve all grown as Ryder Cup players together, and I think that is something that’s really cool and we are all comfortable in the roles.”

Despite missing the old guard, Fleetwood cites the talent and experience on both sides.

“We still have a couple of current legends in the Ryder Cup in Justin [Rose] and Rory [McIlroy],” he said, “and a few of us that are hoping to follow in their footsteps and make our own legacy over the next era of Ryder Cups.”

The leadership of European captain Luke Donald is a positive, Fleetwood said.

“I think everybody just has loved his captaincy, the way he’s gone about things. I think we are all looking forward to playing for him.”

And Donald spoke highly of Fleetwood’s confidence and attitude, saying he “could absolutely be a future captain.”

It all starts this week in Italy on a challenging golf course with dangerous rough that could play favorably for the Europeans.

“It’s thick for sure,” Fleetwood said. “I always find it difficult to say courses have a certain advantage.”

“But of course, the home side will always look for those things in particular that will help them. The rough’s thick,” he added.

PGA News: Jon Rahm: Europe’s home dominance in Ryder Cup a ‘big deal’

0

Jon Rahm is not one to be overwhelmed by the moment, but he’s clearly soaking in the atmosphere ahead of the 2023 Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club near Rome.

“It’s incredible,” Rahm said Tuesday. “When you’ve done it a couple times, you almost know what to expect, and in a way, the sense of anticipation for the Ryder Cup, it’s emphasized a little bit more just because I know and we do know what’s to come this week and how much fun it’s going to be.

“It’s been definitely special the last few weeks being at home and letting yourself think about it a little bit.”

Rahm, a Spaniard who played collegiately at Arizona State, defeated Tiger Woods 2 & 1 in the 2018 Ryder Cup. He is one of only two players to defeat Woods in Ryder Cup singles (Constantino Rocca, 4 & 2, in 1997).

Despite being among the elite players in the game, Rahm claims to feel no added pressure to be Europe’s team leader.

“No, I was World No. 1 going into the last Ryder Cup, and it really didn’t mean anything,” said Rahm, whose victory at the Masters Tournament this year gave him a second major title (2021 U.S. Open). “I’d like to think that whatever we have done before this week and whatever we may do after this week doesn’t really matter.”

One aspect that certainly matters to the Americans is trying to win the Ryder Cup outside of the U.S., something they have not done since 1993.

Rahm is well aware as Europe seeks a seventh consecutive “home” victory.

“It’s a big deal,” he said. “You want to stretch the streak as much as possible. Hopefully we can get into the 30s of years of Europe being undefeated here at home.”

The 28-year-old Rahm is making his third appearance at the Ryder Cup, having produced a 4-3-1 record.

For a man who has accomplished so much in his professional life, Rahm holds a special place for the competition and camaraderie the Ryder Cup brings.

“The greatest thing of the Ryder Cup, apart from winning, obviously, is going in that team room and seeing all these great golfers come together and really be a team and be friends and have a really special, unique bond throughout the week,” he said. “… Those memories you create are going to last a lifetime, and friendships and the bonds get even stronger.

“It’s a lot of fun to be a part of it.”
