NCAAF News: Kyron Drones (5 TDs) leads Virginia Tech past Pitt

Kyron Drones threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more as Virginia Tech secured a much-needed 38-21 victory against visiting Pittsburgh on Saturday night in Blacksburg, Va.

Bhayshul Tuten rushed for 109 yards and caught a touchdown pass for the Hokies (2-3, 1-0 ACC), who snapped a three-game losing streak.

Drones completed 12 of 19 passes for 228 yards and gained 41 more on 21 carries. He played in a limited capacity last year for Baylor, and then played sparingly in the first two games this year before his role expanded.

Virginia Tech held the Panthers scoreless for the final 24 1/2 minutes.

Pitt (1-4, 0-2) sputtered again with its fourth consecutive loss. Quarterback Phil Jurkovec was back for the Panthers after leaving a week earlier with an undisclosed injury in a loss to North Carolina. He had trouble getting much cranked up, although two of his first four completions went for touchdowns. He finished 11-for-22 for 235 yards.

Pitt’s first two scores came on one-play possessions. Jurkovec threw to Bub Means for a 75-yard play just 12 seconds after the Hokies’ first touchdown.

The Panthers trailed 28-7 after a 10-yard touchdown run for Drones gave Virginia Tech its largest lead of the season. That margin was brief because of Jurkovec’s 61-yard pass play to C’Bo Flemister on the next snap.

Just 37 seconds later, Pitt’s Braylan Lovelace recovered a Drones fumble for a touchdown as the Panthers closed within 28-21.

Drones responded by throwing a 53-yard touchdown pass to Jaylin Lane with 3:27 left in the third quarter.

The Hokies were up 20-7 at halftime after Tuten, a transfer from North Carolina A&T, scored on a 12-yard reception. Virginia Tech scored earlier on Drones’ 54-yard pass to Da’Quan Felton and on Drones’ 2-yard run.

Tuten ended up with 24 carries. Pitt’s offense had 24 total rushing plays, compiling only 38 yards.

NCAAF News: West Virginia blocks late field-goal tries in edging TCU

Garrett Greene produced 222 total yards and two touchdowns and West Virginia blocked two field-goal attempts in the final five minutes in outlasting TCU 24-21 on Saturday in a Big 12 Conference battle in Fort Worth, Texas.

Michael Hayes’ 49-yard field goal with 9:31 to play in the game proved to be the game winner for the Mountaineers (4-1, 2-0 Big 12).

West Virginia’s Mike Lockhart blocked Griffin Kell’s 46-yard FG attempt with 4:47 to play, and Sean Martin got a hand on a 55-yard try by Kell with 32 seconds remaining to ensure the victory.

Kell also missed a 53-yard try in the first quarter.

Greene went 10 of 21 passing for 142 yards and added 80 yards on the ground. Teammate CJ Donaldson ran for 61 yards on 22 carries.

Chandler Morris led the Horned Frogs (3-2, 1-1) with 298 yards and two touchdowns passing and also had 51 yards and a score on the ground.

TCU got on the board on its opening possession when JP Richardson caught a 59-yard touchdown pass from Morris for a 7-0 lead. The Mountaineers responded on their ensuring series, driving 75 yards in six plays to Greene’s 35-yard scoring run that tied the game at 7-7 with 8:53 left in the first quarter.

The Horned Frogs regained the advantage on the first snap of the second quarter as Morris got loose for a 31-yard touchdown run.

West Virginia knotted the game on Donaldson’s 1-yard run with 1:50 to play until halftime. But that was more than enough time for the Horned Frogs, who used nine plays to move 75 yards and cashed in with a 36-yard scoring pass from Morris to Dylan Wright with 24 seconds left.

TCU outgained the Mountaineers 312-188 in the first half, with the advantage built on its 212-60 edge in passing and 46 snaps to West Virginia’s 33.

The third quarter belonged to the Mountaineers, in a big way. Greene pulled West Virginia even at 21-21 with 1-yard touochdown run with 4:29 to play in the period. The Mountaineers allowed TCU just 1 yard of offense in 11 snaps in the quarter.

NCAAF News: No. 11 Notre Dame flips script, scores late to beat No. 17 Duke

Audric Estime ran for a 30-yard touchdown with 31 seconds left as No. 11 Notre Dame drove 95 yards to pull out a 21-14 victory against No. 17 Duke on Saturday night in Durham, N.C.

With the Fighting Irish trailing by one, quarterback Sam Hartman’s 17-yard scramble on fourth-and-16 set up the winning points.

Estime rushed for 81 yards and two touchdowns. Hartman, who hit Rico Flores Jr. for the two-point conversion for the game’s last points, finished 15-for-30 for 222 yards.

Riley Leonard threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Moore with 9:17 remaining for Duke’s first lead of the game after the extra-point kick. The Blue Devils (4-1) were seconds away from a second September stunner against a traditional power after opening the season by beating Clemson.

Notre Dame (5-1), which led 13-0 deep in the third quarter, was in danger of losing for the second week in a row. The Irish failed to keep visiting Ohio State out of the end zone in the waning seconds last Saturday.

With 2:35 remaining Saturday, the Irish started their final possession at their own 5-yard line and then were pushed back because of a false-start penalty. They reached the Duke 41 and appeared to be derailed after offensive pass interference, but Hartman’s fourth-down run bailed them out.

Leonard rushed for 88 yards on 18 carries and threw for 134 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Duke’s first lead of the game came after an 80-yard drive in eight plays. Leonard had a 33-yard run for the biggest chunk of yardage on the march.

Hartman, who lost in last year’s regular-season finale in Duke’s Wallace Wade Stadium when he was at Wake Forest, got a form of redemption.

Notre Dame’s Spencer Shrader had field goals of 35 and 45 yards, but he also missed from 37 yards away in the second quarter.

The Irish seemed to be in full control, but led only 13-0 before the Blue Devils converted.

Duke went 75 yards in 11 plays for Jordan Waters’ 1-yard touchdown run with 3:36 to play in the third quarter.

After the Blue Devils’ first touchdown, Notre Dame punted on its next three possessions — twice on three-and-outs.

Duke didn’t score in the first half, but the Blue Devils had chances. Todd Pelino missed field goals of 38 and 25 yards out — the latter on the final play of the first half after Duke moved 63 yards in 11 plays.

NCAAF News: Jaylen Wright powers No. 21 Tennessee past South Carolina

Jaylen Wright rushed for 123 yards on 16 carries and scored a touchdown to help No. 21 Tennessee to a 41-20 win against visiting South Carolina in an SEC game on Saturday night.

Joe Milton III completed 21 of 32 passes for 239 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions, and wide receiver Squirrel White caught nine passes for 104 yards for the Volunteers (4-1, 1-1 SEC).

South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler finished 24-of-35 for 169 yards and an interception.

Mario Anderson rushed for 101 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown for South Carolina (2-3, 1-2).

Tennessee running back Jabari Small scored on a 2-yard run with 42 seconds left in the first quarter to give the Volunteers a 14-10 lead and they kept the lead the rest of the way.

Wright scored on a 42-yard run on Tennessee’s first possession for a 7-0 lead.

Mitch Jeter kicked a 36-yard field goal to trim the lead to 7-3, and DQ Smith then intercepted Milton’s pass over the middle and returned it to the Tennessee 30.

On third-and-goal from the 6, Rattler scrambled up the middle and stretched the ball across the goal line to give the Gamecocks a 10-7 lead with 2:03 left in the first quarter.

Tennessee answered with a 50-yard reception by White that set up the 2-yard touchdown run by Small, moving the Volunteers ahead for good 14-10.

Charles Campbell’s 24-yard field goal extended Tennessee’s lead to 17-10 with 8:50 left in the first half.

Rattler overthrew a sideline pass on third-and-22 and Kamal Hadden intercepted it, running it back 28 yards for a touchdown for a 24-10 lead with 47 seconds left in the half.

The Volunteers received the second-half kickoff and marched 75 yards in 12 plays, extending their lead to 31-10 on a 6-yard touchdown catch by Jacob Warren.

The Gamecocks quickly struck back on a 75-yard touchdown run by Anderson to trim the deficit to 31-17 with 10:28 left in the third.

Campbell tacked on a 33-yard field goal with 12:42 left to stretch the lead to 34-17. Jeter answered with a 47-yarder to cut it to 34-20 with 8:35 left.

Dylan Sampson tacked on a 6-yard touchdown run for the Volunteers with 4:09 left to make it 41-20.

NCAAF News: No. 14 Oklahoma scores 29 unanswered to rout Iowa St.

Dillon Gabriel threw for 366 yards and three touchdowns and ran for two more as No. 14 Oklahoma beat visiting Iowa State 50-20 on Saturday in Norman, Okla.

The Sooners (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) scored the last 29 points of the game after Iowa State cut it to a one-point game early in the second quarter.

It was the most passing yards given up by the Cyclones (2-3, 1-1) in nearly two years.

Jalil Farooq led the Sooners with five catches for 81 yards.

The Sooners led 21-10 after the first quarter thanks to a 44-yard interception return for a touchdown by Billy Bowman, Gabriel’s first rushing touchdown, and a 39-yard touchdown pass from Gabriel to Nic Anderson.

But the Cyclones came back over the next six minutes, pulling to within one on Chase Contreraz’s 48-yard field goal at 9:06 before halftime.

From there, though, the Sooners took control.

Gabriel hit Farooq for a 49-yard gain to set up his own 6-yard touchdown run, then Peyton Bowen’s blocked punt resulted in a safety to stretch the lead.

Oklahoma followed that up with a field goal and then Gabriel hit Drake Stoops for a touchdown in the final seconds of the second quarter to send the Sooners into halftime up 40-20.

Stoops’ touchdown was set up by Gentry Williams’ interception — Oklahoma’s 10th of the season.

Then Oklahoma kept it going coming out of halftime, as Gabriel hit Jayden Gibson for a 41-yard touchdown to stretch the lead to 47-20 and make Gabriel the first 300-yard passer against Iowa State since late in the 2021 season.

Rocco Becht finished 15 of 33 for 188 yards and two touchdowns — with two interceptions — for the Cyclones. More than half of those yards — 118 — came on his two touchdown passes.

After posting 270 yards in the first half, Iowa State managed just 82 yards of offense in the second half — only 29 on the ground.

Oklahoma outgained the Cyclones 523-352 overall.

Jayden Higgins, who scored on a 67-yard reception, led Iowa State with three catches for 91 yards.

Oregon entered the contest averaging 54 points per game, but it did not score in the first quarter. The Ducks’ first two drives ended in three-and-outs.

Stanford pulled ahead 6-0 on two field goals before Oregon mounted a response. Joshua Karty connected from 37 yards on the Cardinal’s first possession, and Karty drilled a 53-yard kick on their second possession.

The Ducks took a 7-6 lead with 8:15 remaining in the second quarter. James scored on a 30-yard run for his team-leading seventh touchdown of the season.

Oregon made it 14-6 with 2:23 to go before halftime. Irving cut left, stiff-armed one defender and evaded another would-be tackler for a 17-yard touchdown.

After the break, the Ducks pulled away.

Nix found Ferguson for a 10-yard touchdown to make it 21-6 with 10:43 remaining in the third quarter. That capped a 10-play, 80-yard drive.

Oregon made it 28-10 less than two minutes later. Franklin caught a deep pass at the Stanford 20-yard line and sidestepped a defender for a 46-yard touchdown.

Franklin caught another touchdown pass from Nix, this time from 5 yards out, to make it 35-6 with 1:43 to go in the third quarter.

Daniels rushed 1 yard for a touchdown on the first possession of the second half to give the Tigers their first lead, 35-31.

Caden Davis’ 48-yard field goal got the Rebels within one point before Logan Diggs’ 12-yard touchdown run gave LSU a 42-34 lead at the end of the third quarter.

On the third play of the fourth quarter, Judkins ran 11 yards for a touchdown, but a failed 2-point conversion attempt left the Tigers with a two-point lead.

Daniels and Thomas teamed for a 34-yard touchdown to increase the lead to 49-40 with 8:34 remaining.

Dart’s 1-yard touchdown run pulled Ole Miss within 49-47 with 5:06 left, setting up the game-winning drive.

Daniels drove the Tigers to the Rebels’ 15 in the final seconds, but two false starts and two incompletions in the end zone preserved the win.

Dart’s 4-yard touchdown pass to Judkins and Ulysses Bentley IV’s 43-yard touchdown gave the Rebels a quick 14-0 lead.

Daniels’ 20-yard touchdown pass to Thomas cut the lead to 14-7.

After Dart’s 63-yard touchdown pass to Watkins, Daniels’ 55-yard run on the third play of the second quarter led to Diggs’ 1-yard touchdown run, trimming the lead to 21-14.

Dart threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Dayton Wade and Daniels responded with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Thomas to trim the lead to 28-21.

NFL News: Browns take to the air, overwhelm Titans 27-3

Deshaun Watson went 27-of-33 passing for 289 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Cleveland Browns to a 27-3 home win over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

Amari Cooper caught seven passes for 116 yards and a touchdown and Elijah Moore caught nine passes for 49 yards as Cleveland improved to 2-1.

The Browns’ defense dominated, sacking Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill five times and limiting Derrick Henry to just 20 yards rushing on 11 carries. Cleveland’s Myles Garrett was credited with 3 1/2 sacks.

Tannehill completed 13 of 25 passes for 104 yards, while guiding Tennessee (1-2) to just six first downs and 94 yards of total offense.

On the other side, Cleveland amassed 23 first downs and had 341 yards of total offense.

Cleveland possessed the ball for an overwhelming 38:29 of game time.

Leading 13-3 at halftime, Cleveland opened it up to a 20-3 lead with 5:49 remaining in the third quarter on a 3-yard touchdown run by Jerome Ford to finish off an 11-play, 85-yard drive.

The Browns then went up 27-3 with 6:51 remaining in the game on a 43-yard touchdown pass from Watson to Cooper.

Cleveland opened the scoring with 7:49 remaining in the first quarter on a 48-yard field goal by Dustin Hopkins before Tennessee tied the game with 14:14 left in the first half on a 44-yard field goal by Nick Folk.

The Browns took a 10-3 lead with 9:39 to go in the second quarter on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Watson to Ford before going up 13-3 with one minute left until halftime on a 52-yard field goal by Hopkins.

Watson’s gaudy numbers came while Cleveland struggled to run the ball in its first game playing without running back Nick Chubb, who is lost for the season with a knee injury.

Cleveland gained 78 yards on 31 carries (2.5 yards per carry) as a team.

NFL News: Browns RB Nick Chubb has first of 2 surgeries

Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb underwent the first of two surgeries on Friday to repair his torn left medial collateral ligament, the team said Saturday.

Head team physician Dr. James Voos repaired damage to Chubb’s medial capsule, meniscus and medial collateral ligament, per the team.

A second surgery to repair Chubb’s ACL will happen in the coming months.

Chubb was injured on Sept. 18 in Cleveland’s 26-22 loss to the host Pittsburgh Steelers. Chubb rushed up the middle for a gain of 5 yards with 14:14 left in the second quarter and was in the process of being tackled by Pittsburgh linebacker Cole Holcomb when safety Minkah Fitzpatrick dropped his shoulder and ran directly into Chubb’s left knee.

The hit by Fitzpatrick caused Chubb’s leg to bend, and Chubb sat up and grabbed his knee and could be heard yelling in anguish through the field microphones.

Chubb, 27, rushed for 64 yards on 10 carries before exiting. He had 170 yards on 28 carries this season.

The four-time Pro Bowl selection topped 1,000 rushing yards in each of the past four seasons, gaining a career-high 1,525 last season. Chubb had 996 yards as a rookie in 2018 before beginning his streak of 1,000-yard seasons.

NFL News: Raiders QB Jimmy Garoppolo (concussion) ruled out vs. Chargers

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will miss Sunday’s road game against the Los Angeles Chargers due to the concussion he sustained in Week 3.

The Raiders ruled out Garoppolo on Saturday afternoon after the latest round of tests with medical personnel. He was injured during last Sunday night’s 23-18 loss against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Either veteran Brian Hoyer or fourth-round draft pick Aidan O’Connell will start against the Chargers.

Garoppolo is in his first season as Las Vegas quarterback after the organization moved on from Derek Carr.

His play has been shaky through three games. Garoppolo has thrown a league-worst six interceptions in just 94 pass attempts while throwing for 709 yards and five touchdowns.

The Raiders had listed Garoppolo as questionable after Friday’s practice.

Hoyer, 37, has started 40 games over his 15-year NFL career and has a 16-24 record. However, he has lost his last 12 starts dating to Week 4 of the 2016 season.

“I’ve been a starter, I’ve been a backup,” Hoyer told reporters during the week. “The mentality is always prepare to play and then go out and execute when your name’s called.”

O’Connell is a rookie from Purdue who impressed during the preseason. He passed for 9,219 yards, 65 touchdowns and 30 interceptions for the Boilermakers (2019-22). The yardage ranks sixth in Purdue history and the TD passes are fifth.

The Raiders also ruled out cornerback Nate Hobbs (ankle). In addition, the club said running back Brandon Bolden didn’t travel with the team due to a personal matter, but he is expected to rejoin the team in Los Angeles and play Sunday.
