Liberty, Aces set for titanic clash in WNBA Finals

The New York Liberty and Las Vegas Aces mostly rolled through the regular season and navigated their respective playoff series.

Now comes the time to complete the journey with the two standout teams following through on their destiny to meet in the WNBA Finals, with Game 1 on Sunday at Las Vegas.

“It’s going to be a hard-fought battle,” Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello said. “But we’re battle-tested.”

Declared “super teams” since the preseason, both have lived up to the billing. The series will mark the first time two former WNBA players are head coaches in the Finals. Becky Hammon is coach of the Aces.

“Both teams are great and we’re playing at the right time,” said Las Vegas forward A’ja Wilson, who was the league’s MVP In 2022.

The best-of-five series will proceed to Game 2 on Wednesday at Las Vegas before the matchup moves to the East Coast.

The Liberty won three of five meetings this year, going 2-2 in regular-season games along with New York’s win in the in-season Commissioner’s Cup final. The only matchup between the teams that was decided by single digits was the most recent, with the Liberty winning 94-85 on Aug. 28 at home.

“We’ll have a little bit more urgency and little bit more desperation in everything we do,” Brondello said.

The Aces set the standard throughout the regular season. That’s something the Liberty respect, said New York forward Breanna Stewart, who was named the league’s MVP this season.

“Everything that you saw in the regular season has only gotten better,” Stewart said. “We got better, too.”

The Aces are trying to become the first back-to-back WNBA champions since Los Angeles in 2001 and 2002. The Liberty have never won a championship and are making their fifth Finals appearance, but first since 2002.

“We obviously have respect for our opponent and they’re the champions from last year, but we need to go in and stamp how we want to play at both ends of the floor and have confidence,” Brondello said.

Brondello has a league title on her coaching resume from 2014 with the Phoenix Mercury.

Despite all the offensive firepower on each team, Hammon said Las Vegas continued to make progress because “it was going to come down to improving defense.”

The Liberty like how they have reacted to challenges, topping the Connecticut Sun in four games to reach the Finals.

“We’re a resilient team and we’ve been battle-tested throughout the playoffs,” Liberty forward Jonquel Jones said.

NAS News: Tyler Reddick narrowly clinches pole at Charlotte

CONCORD, N.C. – After running what he termed “one of the dirtiest laps I’ve ever had in practice,” Tyler Reddick got just what he needed in Saturday’s subsequent qualifying session at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course.

Turning a lap in 81.214 seconds (102.839 mph) in the final round of time trials, Reddick earned the pole position for Sunday’s Bank of America ROVAL 400, the Round of 12 elimination race in the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs (2 p.m. ET on NBC, PRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

Reddick edged fellow Toyota driver Christopher Bell (102.695 mph) by .124 seconds to secure his second Busch Light Pole Award of the season, his first at the 2.32-mile, 17-turn circuit and the sixth of his career.

The driver of the No. 45 23XI Racing Camry chose an opportune time to snag the top spot on the grid. Reddick enters the race ninth in the standings, two points behind Brad Keselowski for the final spot in the Round of 8. Keselowski will start 19th on Sunday.

“I got lucky,” said Reddick, who was fastest in Group A in the opening round of qualifying at 103.207 mph. “I had one of my dirtiest laps I’ve ever had in practice. But this is exactly where we need to be on Saturday.

“I knew I had to go out and qualify here to give us some options.”

Since the debut of NASCAR’s Next Gen car last season, Reddick is the only driver with more than one road course victory. He triumphed at Road America and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course last year and won at Circuit of the Americas in March.

Two other Playoff drivers below the cut line for the Round of 8 had promising qualifying runs. Bubba Wallace, nine points behind Keselowski, earned the fourth starting position with a lap at 102.569 mph. Kyle Busch, 26 points in arrears, will start fifth after a lap at 102.494 mph.

Non-Playoff drivers Daniel Suarez, AJ Allmendinger, Joey Logano, and Ty Gibbs will start third, sixth, seventh and 10th, respectively. Allmendinger led Group B with the fastest lap of the day at 103.295 mph.

Chase Elliott, fighting for the owners’ championship, qualified eighth. Denny Hamlin jumped the curb and spun in the backstretch chicane and failed to complete a lap in the final round. Hamlin’s miscue forced NASCAR to red flag the session and prevented Gibbs, who was running behind Hamlin, from posting a lap.

Playoff driver Kyle Larson didn’t make a qualifying attempt in the first round after hitting the Turn 8 wall in practice and going to a backup car for Sunday’s race. Fifteen points ahead of Reddick, Larson will start from the rear.

“I don’t think you can go for stage points from 40th (actually 37th),” Larson said of his race strategy. “The silver lining may be that you can short the stages (by pitting early) and get your track position that way to be up front at the end of the race. I think that would be the plan, I guess, going forward.”

F1 News: Max Verstappen wins third straight F1 title

Max Verstappen clinched the 2023 Formula One title on Saturday, still with six Grand Prix races remaining on the season.

Verstappen finished in second place at the Qatar Grand Prix sprint race and scored seven points, good enough for an insurmountable 184-point lead over his Red Bull Racing teammate, Sergio Perez.

McLaren rookie Oscar Piastri, the pole sitter, won the sprint race.

Verstappen, 26, won the pole for Sunday’s Qatar Grand Prix and is the favorite to win his 14th race of the season in 17 starts. In the races he hasn’t won, Verstappen has finished second twice and fifth once.

This season, he has led 712 of 962 laps completed.

Last season, Verstappen, from the Netherlands, had 15 wins to set an F1 record.

Formula One legends Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton hold a record seven circuit titles.

According to MyPillow’s attorneys, CEO Mike Lindell owes them millions of dollars. Court filings reveal Lindell’s law firm, Minnesota-based Parker Daniels Kibort said both Lindell and MyPillow have not paid the firm for its work on the case and won’t be able to pay future fees and costs.

The court filing specifically states that, “On October 2, 2023, Parker Daniels Kibort was informed by Defendants that they are not able to get caught up with or make any payment on the large amount they owe in arrears nor pay for anywhere near the estimated expense of continuing to defend against the lawsuits going forward, including either the legal fees or litigation costs.” “At this time, Defendants are in arrears by millions of dollars to PDK,” the filing said. “PDK is a small litigation and trial firm in Minneapolis, MN and cannot afford to finance Defendants’ defense in the Litigations.”

The law firm reported that future legal fees will total in the millions of dollars and the firm cannot sustain those costs.   The court must grant the release attorneys’ motion to withdraw before they can formally release Mike Lindell and MyPillow as clients.

The firm has been representing the CEO of MyPillow Mike Lindell in defamation lawsuits filed by voting machine companies Smartmatic and Dominion Voting Systems.  There is also a third lawsuit filed by former Dominion employee Eric Coomer. The lawsuits claim their reputations were damaged by Lindell’s repeated fantastical claims of fraud around the 2020 presidential election where former President Donald Trump lost to President Joe Biden.

“We are at war, “Israeli PM Netanyahu tells it citizens- Watch Graphic: Blow up of high-rise building along the Gaza Strip.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu
U.S. Department of State

In an unprecedented and deadly surprise assault of immense proportions, Gaza militants executed a simultaneous infiltration into several Israeli towns and military encampments early Saturday. The Israeli military reported that over 2,000 rockets were launched from Gaza towards central and southern Israel, resulting in numerous Israeli casualties. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered a video statement in front of Israel’s military headquarters, declaring, “We find ourselves in a state of war.”

Mohammed Deif, the prominent Hamas militant commander, issued a call for a broader regional conflict in response to the Israeli “profanation” of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. This reference pertained to the presence of Jewish religious ultranationalists who had visited the holy site, also known in Judaism as the Temple Mount, during a recent Jewish holiday.

Commencing at 6:30 a.m. local time, Palestinian militants within the besieged Gaza Strip initiated a coordinated offensive against Israel. They utilized various means, including paragliders, maritime routes via the Mediterranean Sea, and ground-based approaches, as outlined by Israeli military spokesperson Richard Hecht during a press briefing.

A prolonged confrontation ensued between Israeli forces and Palestinian gunmen within at least five southern Israeli communities near Gaza, which encompassed the town of Sderot, as well as the kibbutz communities of Nahal Oz, Beeri, Magen, and Kfar Aza. Additionally, two Israeli military camps in the vicinity became focal points of the ongoing conflict. “We recognize the gravity of this situation,” expressed Hecht.

The prime minister also issued orders for the military to reclaim the infiltrated towns from Hamas militants, who were engaged in intense gunfights with Israeli soldiers.

The Department of State issued this statement today, The United States unequivocally condemns the appalling attacks by Hamas terrorists against Israel, including civilians and civilian communities.  There is never any justification for terrorism. We stand in solidarity with the government and people of Israel and extend our condolences for the Israeli lives lost in these attacks.  We will remain in close contact with our Israeli partners. The United States supports Israel’s right to defend itself.

Israel reported a death toll of at least 40 people, with hospitals in Israel treating hundreds of wounded individuals, including dozens in critical condition.

On Saturday, Hamas launched thousands of rockets at Israel and sent dozens of fighters across the heavily fortified border, a significant display of force that took Israel by surprise on a major holiday.

The substantial incursion on Simchat Torah brought back memories of the 1973 war, almost 50 years to the day, when Israel’s adversaries launched a surprise attack on Yom Kippur.

Reuters news outlet reported, Iran’s state television showed parliament members rising from their seats to chant “Death to Israel.” Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani spokesperson was quoted by ISNA as saying: “In this operation, the element of surprise and other combined methods were used, which show the Palestinian people’s confidence in the face of the occupiers.”

Drawing parallels to one of the most distressing moments in Israeli history heightened criticism of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his far-right allies, who had campaigned for a more aggressive response to threats from Gaza. Political commentators heavily criticized the government for failing to anticipate what seemed to be a highly coordinated and planned Hamas attack.

Apple CEO Tim Cook sells 241,000 Apple shares, will get $41 million

0
John Gress Media Inc

Apple CEO Tim Cook has sold a huge chunk of his Apple shares, according to a security filing. He will pocket about $41 million. Although he has offloaded these shares his Apple stock will remain the same as he received the same number of shares as per his annual compensation package.

Cook has sold the shares at a time when the Cupertino giant’s stock value is declining. However, the sale was scheduled about 10 months ago. Apple shares have fallen by 9 percent in September, its worst fall so far in 2023.

According to a filing in the Securities and Exchanges Commission (SEC) Apple CEO Tim Cook sold 241,000 shares on Monday. Previously owned shares by Cook amounting to 270,000 shares had been withheld for tax purposes. Tim Cook is expected to get $41.4 million after taxes.

Organic Greek Vitamin Bottles and Multivitamin Gummies

The last time Apple CEO offloaded a huge chunk of his company shares was in August 2021. At that point in time, Tim Cook received $355 million from the sale of Apple stock, according to reports.

Although Apple remains the most valuable company in the world, it has seen a fall in its market capitalization from its $3.1 trillion evaluation in July. It has a current market cap of $2.7 trillion.

Forbes reported that Tim Cook’s estimated current net worth is $1.9 billion. His common stock shares of Apple are 3,280,052 shares, approximately .02 percent of all outstanding shares, according to the outlet. This stake is worth approximately $565 million.

Apple still remains an extremely successful company but is also seeing a downward slump like the rest of the market or a course correction depending on one’s viewpoint. Apple’s iPhone 15 sales are not as robust as expected as consumers are more inclined to spend on essentials rather than discretionary purchases and might continue to do so till the economy becomes robust.

PREM News: Arsenal, Man City clash in early-season heavyweight battle

Three-time defending champion Manchester City visit last year’s runners-up Arsenal on Sunday in a match that again could shape the Premier League title race.

So far, it’s unclear whether a two-team chase will again emerge or if the field will be more crowded.

For that reason and others, City manager Pep Guardiola insisted that the Sunday clash in London — while high profile — won’t be the most important match his side plays in the next two months.

Instead, it’s the next two or three UEFA Champions League group matches, during which City could seal early qualification for the knockout phase after starting the tournament with back-to-back wins.

Most recently, City (6-1-0, 18 points) rebounded from taking their first league loss last weekend to win 3-1 at RB Leipzig on Wednesday behind goals from Phil Foden, Julian Alvarez and Jeremy Doku. If they continue that form, they can book their place in the last 16 sooner and then focus solely on the league for most of the winter.

“The Champions League is the most important thing by far, until February when it starts again,” Guardiola said. “What I want is to arrive here in February when we start the Champions League to be in the competitions and that it’s close. To be close to the top of the league and keep the distance short and make the last 10 games in our competition, ‘OK, let’s do it again.'”

That approach worked last season when City eventually overtook Arsenal late and clinched the title before the final weekend.

Arsenal (5-0-2, 17 points) may find this year’s task more difficult, given rising expectations and a return to the Champions League — where they lost 2-1 at Lens on Tuesday — following a six-year absence.

The Gunners also snapped a eight-match losing streak against City when they won the Community Shield on penalties following a 1-1 draw in early August, making it easier not to focus on those recent struggles.

“Well, we aren’t looking back for sure because there were different players participating in those games, but we know one thing for certain, that we’re going to have to be at our best,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said. “We have to be at our best in every department for 100 minutes. Then we have a chance.”

Bukayo Saka, Arsenal’s leading scorer, is questionable after he was forced off early due to a muscular injury in the loss at Lens.

Meanwhile, influential City midfielder Rodri will be sidelined on Sunday while serving the last match of his three-match suspension for a violent- conduct, red-card offense.

PREM News: Liverpool aim for rare victory over Brighton

Liverpool FC look to continue their early Premier League title challenge on Sunday when they visit a Brighton & Hove Albion side that has been a major impediment to those aims in the recent past.

Liverpool (5-1-1, 16 points) enters the weekend fourth in the table — but only two points back of league leaders Manchester City — following a controversial 2-1 loss at Tottenham Hotspur that could have finished differently had Luis Diaz’s apparent goal been allowed to stand.

Instead, it was incorrectly ruled offside on the field, and an error in the video review process confirmed that decision and eventually precipitated an official apology from PGMOL, the governing body of the league’s referees.

The Reds were able to move on in the form of a 2-0 win over Union Saint-Gilloise in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday with goals from Ryan Gravenberch and Diogo Jota.

The trip to the South Coast could provide another boost if they can beat the Seagulls, who have won the past two meetings in all competitions and prevented a Liverpool victory in six of the teams’ past seven matchups.

“If you play like you played last year, you will get a massive knock again,” Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said of his side’s recent struggles against Brighton. “That’s how it is. So we should play better, and I think we can play better. That’s the first step into the right direction.”

Brighton (5-2-0, 15 points) are also in the mix in a crowded top third of the table, entering the weekend in sixth behind Aston Villa on goal difference after Villa routed the Seagulls 6-1 last weekend.

Any doubts over whether that result would dampen the spirit of manager Roberto de Zerbi’s side were silenced after his team fought from two goals down to a 2-2 Europa League draw at Marseille on Thursday to earn the first European point in club history.

Pascal Gross began the fightback in the 54th minute before Joao Pedro leveled from the penalty spot in the 88th.

“If we speak about football, we played bad, we didn’t play well, as Brighton, no?” De Zerbi said. “If we speak about character, about behavior, or about the passion of the players, there was only one team on the pitch, and I’m really proud.”

After scoring an own goal in the match against Villa, Brighton fullback Pervis Estupinan departed at halftime on the weekend and is expected to miss about a month with a muscular injury.

Liverpool’s Jota and Curtis Jones will be serving suspensions for red cards they earned in the loss at Spurs.

NWSL News: Report: NWSL lands TV deal with four outlets

The National Women’s Soccer League will spread its media rights to four partners for the next four years, Sportico reported on Friday.

Per the report, ESPN, CBS, Amazon and Scripps will be part of the new deal, which is expected to be signed this month.

Financial details of the agreements weren’t stated, but according to Sportico, the figure will be “significantly” more than 10 times larger than the NWSL’s current deal with CBS.

In the existing contract, the NWSL is receiving $1.5 million annually from CBS, but the league is paying all production costs, which top $10 million annually, per Sportico.

The new deal would run through 2027, the year that the next Women’s World Cup will be held.

The partnership with CBS hasn’t always been popular with NWSL players, particularly when the network dictated that the league’s 2021 championship match be played at noon ET. That would have meant a 9 a.m. local time start in Portland, Ore., the scheduled venue. The game eventually was moved to Louisville, where the Washington Spirit beat the Chicago Red Stars for the championship.

This year, the NWSL has 12 teams, with the latest two — Angel City FC in Los Angeles and the San Diego Wave — having joined as expansion teams in 2022. Two more teams, Bay FC in San Jose and the Utah Royals, will begin play in 2024, and a new Boston club is due to join the league in 2026.

Earlier this year, NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman told the Washington Post that a 16th team will join the league by 2026.

According to Sportico, Angel City is the most valuable team in the NWSL at $180 million, followed by San Diego at $90 million and the Kansas City Current at $75 million. The lowest evaluation among the 12 existing sides is $40 million for the Red Stars.
