NFL News: Bucs WR Mike Evans expected to return from injury Sunday

Tampa Bay wide receiver Mike Evans will likely return from a hamstring injury Sunday against the New York Giants, according to Evans and Bucs coach Todd Bowles on Friday.

The franchise’s all-time leading scorer, Evans was diagnosed with a moderate hamstring strain after suffering the injury in the second quarter of a 41-31 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 7. He has missed three games since, tying the longest stretch of absences in his 11-year career.

Evans, 31, will play against the Giants “as long as he’s healthy and fresh,” Bowles said Friday. He was a limited participant in practice Wednesday and Friday but a full participant on Thursday.

However, given that Evans’ Week 7 injury was an aggravation of an existing hamstring injury, he may have a short leash, especially given that Tampa Bay’s top wide receivers are already banged up.

The Bucs are without their No. 2 wide receiver for likely the rest of the season, as Chris Godwin suffered a dislocated left ankle in the same game as Evans’ hamstring injury. Tampa Bay’s No. 3 wide receiver, rookie Jalen McMillan, also suffered a hamstring injury but has fully participated in practice every day this week.

“If he needs to be in there, he’ll be in there,” Bowles said of Evans, “but we’ll get him out when we have to.”

For his part, Evans seems ready to take the field.

“This week definitely built my confidence, and last week, going through all the conditioning I had to do,” Evans said. “I feel really good. Like I said, I feel better than I did going into the Ravens game. I was a little hobbled going into that game. I probably should have sat that one out, but I always try to tough it through. This time off definitely helped me, so I’m confident.”

The Bucs have struggled in Evans’ and Godwin’s absence, losing four straight after a 4-2 start.

“It hurt to see your team out there fighting in really tough, close games that we could have won,” Evans said. “I wish I could (have been) out there to help them. I’m excited for this week.”

In seven games (all starts) this season, Evans has 26 receptions for 335 yards and six TDs.

He jumps back into the lineup as the team’s leader with six touchdown receptions. However, his 10-season streak of 1,000-yard campaigns is in peril. Evans will need to average 95 yards per game in the final seven games.

NHL News: Avs out to keep rolling as Panthers try to get on track

The Florida Panthers and Colorado Avalanche, who both have Stanley Cup aspirations this season, have been going in different directions entering Saturday’s matchup in Sunrise, Fla.

Florida is 1-4-0 in its past five, while Colorado is 5-1-0 in its past six.

Panthers coach Paul Maurice, however, said he is not particularly concerned over a 3-1 loss at Chicago on Thursday.

“This is bigger,” Maurice said. “This is a five-game block. We played one (game) we liked, and that’s not good enough for us.”

That one game the Panthers liked was a 6-0 home win over NHL-leading Winnipeg last Saturday. But other than that, the Panthers have struggled, and Maurice bemoaned his team’s unforced turnovers on Thursday.

On offense, Maurice said his players were “late on a whole bunch of things out there” that could’ve been goals.

The reigning Stanley Cup champions have stars all over the ice, including forwards Sam Reinhart, Aleksander Barkov and Matthew Tkachuk, defenseman Gustav Forsling and goalie Sergei Bobrovsky.

Reinhart has a 12-game points streak (10 goals, eight assists) and entered Friday tied for the NHL lead in goals with 15.

Barkov, the team captain and one of the NHL’s best defensive forwards, has missed eight games this season. But he is still tied with Reinhart for the team lead in assists with 15.

Tkachuk, who has missed five games, has five goals and eight assists in 15 contests. However, his value goes far beyond the numbers as the heart and soul of the team.

Forsling, an offensive defenseman, has 11 points (three goals, eight assists) in 20 games and leads the team in plus/minus at plus-13.

Bobrovsky, who is expected to start on Saturday, is 9-4-1 this season with a 2.98 goals-against average and a .893 save percentage. For his career, he is 12-4-2 with a 2.66 GAA and a .912 save percentage against Colorado.

The Avalanche, meanwhile, are coming off a 2-1 win over host Washington on Thursday.

Colorado coach Jared Bednar said his team’s depth has been showing up during this recent hot streak.

“All four lines are contributing,” he said.

Like the Panthers, the Avalanche have stars up front, on the blue line and between the pipes. Center Nathan MacKinnon and defenseman Cale Makar are considered by many to be among the top five players in the NHL. Winger Mikko Rantanen has turned in two straight 100-point seasons and goalie Alexandar Georgiev is coming off his first All-Star Game in 2024.

MacKinnon, a seven-time All-Star and the reigning league MVP, has averaged 125 1/2 points over the past two seasons. This season, he led the NHL in assists (27) and was tied for first in points (34) entering Friday.

Rantanen, a two-time All-Star, has nine goals over his past eight games. For the season, he leads Colorado with 13 goals and is tied for second with Makar in points (28).

Makar, a three-time All-Star and the Rookie of the Year in 2020, won the Norris Trophy in 2022 as the league’s best defensemen. Entering Friday, he leads all NHL blueliners in points.

Georgiev is 5-5-0 with a 3.31 GAA and a .874 save percentage. He missed two games due to an upper-body injury before returning on Thursday to beat Washington with 28 saves.

For his career against Florida, Georgiev is 2-3-0 with a 3.78 GAA and a .903 save percentage.

NHL News: Leafs put F Matthew Knies (upper-body injury) on IR

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies was placed on injured reserve Friday due to an upper-body injury, though coach Craig Berube said the former second-round pick is showing signs of improvement.

The decision to put the 22-year-old Knies on IR, retroactive to Wednesday, means the third-year player won’t suit up for Sunday’s home game against the Utah Hockey Club.

During Wednesday’s 3-0 victory over the visiting Vegas Golden Knights, Knies was hit under the chin by the shoulder of Zach Whitecloud and fell hard to the ice. Knies left the game immediately and hasn’t practiced since.

Officials deemed it a clean hit, though Whitecloud got into a subsequent scuffle with Knies’ teammate, Simon Benoit, who received a double minor. Whitecloud was cited for a two-minute roughing infraction.

In 20 games this season, Knies has 12 points (eight goals, four assists). Over 103 career games since 2022-23, the Phoenix native has totaled 48 points (23 goals, 25 assists) after being drafted by Toronto in 2021.

In a corresponding move, Toronto recalled forward Alex Nylander after signing the 26-year-old to a one year, $775,000 contract on Friday.

Nylander has 12 points (eight goals, four assists) this season in 14 games for the AHL’s Toronto Marlies.

The Calgary, Alberta native and brother of Toronto’s William Nylander has 49 points (25 goals, 24 assists) in 121 NHL games with the Buffalo Sabres (2016-19), Chicago Blackhawks (2019-20), Pittsburgh Penguins (2022-23) and Columbus Blue Jackets (2024). Buffalo made Nylander the No. 8 overall pick in the 2016 draft.

In other Leafs news, defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson missed practice Friday with an illness. The 33-year-old, who averages 21:09 of ice time, had an assist in Wednesday’s win and has eight points (one goal, seven assists) in 20 games.

To fill Ekman-Larsson’s spot, the Leafs recalled defenseman Philippe Myers from the Marlies on Friday. Myers played 12:11 in his one game with Toronto this season, a 4-3 overtime loss on Oct. 26 against the host Boston Bruins.

Also on Friday, Berube said that forward Max Domi may return for Sunday’s game despite being on the IR with a lower-body injury. Domi, 29, has six assists this season in 19 games.

NFL News: Reports: Titans placing CB L’Jarius Sneed (quad) on IR

The Tennessee Titans are placing cornerback L’Jarius Sneed on injured reserve, per multiple reports Friday.

Sneed, 27, has not played since Week 5 due to a quad injury. He has 23 tackles in five starts this season.

Sneed signed a four-year, $76.4 million contract after being acquired in a March trade with Kansas City.

The two-time Super Bowl champion had 10 interceptions and 303 tackles in 57 games (54 starts) with the Chiefs, who drafted him in the fourth round in 2020.

NFL News: Trial for Patriots S Jabrill Peppers set for January

The criminal trial for New England safety Jabrill Peppers, whose charges include both domestic violence and drug possession, is scheduled for Jan. 22.

Peppers initially pleaded not guilty in Quincy (Mass.) District Court on Oct. 7 after he was arrested on charges of strangulation or suffocation, assault and battery on a family or household member, and possession of a Class B drug (cocaine).

According to police reports, a woman who said she had been dating Peppers “on and off” for about three years said she was hit, shoved to the ground, and choked “at least six times” by Peppers at an apartment in Braintree, Mass. The woman also alleged that her head was shoved into a wall and that Peppers took off her clothing and left her outside.

At a pretrial hearing Friday, Peppers’ defense attorney, Marc Alan Brofsky, alleged that the victim’s lawyer approached Peppers, asking for $10.5 million to settle the case or they would file a civil suit. Brofsky said Peppers rejected the request and that a civil suit seeking that same amount would be filed.

“It’s technically not extortion, but it’s very probative and tells you what this case is about,” Brofsky said.

Court records show Peppers is the defendant in a civil suit filed Wednesday in Norfolk Superior Court, with Jane Doe listed as the plaintiff. Further details were not available.

Brofsky said Peppers has cell phone video taken immediately after the incident that he said does not show visible injuries consistent with the accusations of violence.

Peppers, who posted $2,500 bail on Oct. 7 and was ordered to stay away from the victim, was excused from attending Friday’s hearing.

On Oct. 9, Peppers was placed on the Commissioner’s exempt list. He is not permitted to participate in practice or attend games while on the list but will continue to be paid. He is in the first season of a three-year, $24 million contract.

In their reactions to the news in October, Patriots coach Jerod Mayo and owner Robert Kraft condemned domestic violence but also said Peppers should be allowed due process.

“I just want to be clear — any act of domestic violence is unacceptable for us as a team, whether you’re a player, staff member. We’re wholeheartedly against any type of domestic violence. I know the organization’s position, which I fully support,” Patriots coach Jerod Mayo said on Oct. 9.

“With that being said, I do think that Jabrill has to continue to go through due process. We’ll see how that works out. The league has put him on the exempt list, and that will give us time to gather more information going forward… As a father of three daughters, I definitely understand the seriousness of the allegations and hopefully they’re not true.”

Peppers did not appear in the Patriots’ 15-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins in Week 5, the Sunday before his arrest, having already been ruled out due to a shoulder injury.

Peppers, 29, had started all four previous games and has 23 tackles, one interception and two passes defended.

In his eighth season, Peppers has 494 career tackles with 28 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, seven interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), five forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries in 97 games (83 starts).

The Cleveland Browns selected Peppers in the first round (25th overall) out of Michigan in the 2017 NFL Draft. He has played for the Browns (2017-18), New York Giants (2019-21) and Patriots.

NHL News: Wild wrap up red-hot road trip against Flames

The Minnesota Wild have stepped into uncharted territory as they prepare to finish a three-game road trip against the Calgary Flames on Saturday afternoon.

The Wild are off to the hottest start in franchise history with a 13-3-3 record through 19 games. A huge part of that success is a league-best 9-1-2 road mark, buoyed by an impressive 5-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday.

“Great road game … again,” forward Marcus Johansson told The Athletic. “Everyone’s pulling their weight. I feel like we’re playing real solid all over the ice.”

The Wild, who trail only the Winnipeg Jets in points, are led by first-liners Matt Boldy and Kirill Kaprizov, both of whom are riding point-scoring streaks. The Edmonton victory also showed their resiliency, recovering from an early deficit and shaking off two disallowed goals.

“The big thing I like is the mental maturity that we’re now starting to show — that focus, how to play with the lead, what happens when bad things happen in the game, the discipline within your structure, the penalty discipline,” coach John Hynes said. “All those types of little things, I think, are becoming more and more automatic within the group.”

Kaprizov is not only riding a seven-game point streak in which he’s collected 13 points (six goals, seven assists) but he also is enjoying a franchise-record 11-game road point streak with 24 points (eight goals, 16 assists) in that span. Boldy is on a five-game run with three goals and two assists.

The Flames are also feeling good about themselves these days. Calgary, pegged to be a bottom-feeder prior to the season, is in second in the Pacific Division and riding a three-game winning streak extended by a 3-2 home victory over the New York Rangers on Thursday.

The Flames fired a season-high 49 shots on goal — 20 in the first period.

“Probably one of the best first periods all year, I think. We were all over them,” forward Jonathan Huberdeau said. “Obviously, it’s tough to play like that for 60 minutes, but I think we did a pretty good job and came up with another win.”

The Flames are succeeding despite being in the bottom third of the league offensively. In fact, Calgary has scored three or fewer goals in 17 consecutive games.

A huge key has been outstanding goaltending, especially from rookie Dustin Wolf, who has posted a 5-0-1 record in his last six starts and surrendered 10 goals in those outings.

Another aspect has been the team’s ability to control play with a relentless style.

“We’ve established an identity, which is big for our group,” defenseman MacKenzie Weegar said. “Coming into the Saddledome now, it’s hard to play against our group. We’ve got forwards tracking and checking hard, ‘D’ are in your face, goalies are kicking. We have an identity and I love to see it. That first period, we just kept comin’ and comin’ and I think it wore down on that team.”

Mavericks 123, Nuggets 120

Naji Marshall scored a career-high 26 points, P.J. Washington had 22, and visiting Dallas beat Denver in an NBA Cup West Group C game.

Kyrie Irving finished with 19 points for Dallas, which played without Luka Doncic, who will be out for at least four games due to a right wrist injury. The Mavericks are 2-1 in the NBA Cup.

Nikola Jokic had 33 points, 17 rebounds and 10 assists in his return after missing three games for the birth of his second child. Christian Braun and Michael Porter Jr. scored 17 points each for Denver, which fell to 1-2 in the NBA Cup.

76ers 113, Nets 98

Jared McCain scored 30 points, Tyrese Maxey added 26, and despite playing without Joel Embiid and Paul George, Philadelphia snapped a five-game skid by beating visiting Brooklyn for its first NBA Cup victory.

McCain, a rookie, posted his seventh consecutive game scoring 20-plus point, and his second professional game with at least 30, shooting 11-of-20 from the floor and 6-of-11 from 3-point range.

Brooklyn’s Cameron Johnson led all scorers with 37 points after putting up 34 in Tuesday’s 116-115 win at Charlotte. Johnson shot 9-of-13 from 3-point range, but the rest of the Nets went just 4-of-24 from beyond the arc.

Celtics 108, Wizards 96

Jaylen Brown had 31 points and 11 rebounds to lead visiting Boston past stubborn Washington in an NBA Cup matchup.

Jayson Tatum and Jrue Holiday added 16 points each for the Celtics, who have won four straight overall and are 2-1 in East Group C Cup play.

Jordan Poole scored 23 points and Kyle Kuzma added 21 for the Wizards, who have lost 10 straight, nine by double digits. Malcolm Brogdon finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds for Washington, which is 0-2 in NBA Cup play.

Bulls 136, Hawks 122

Zach LaVine scored 26 points and Ayo Dosunmu and Coby White added 20 apiece to spark seven Chicago players in double figures in defeating visiting Atlanta in an NBA Cup game.

Nikola Vucevic posted 18 points and 13 rebounds for Chicago. The Bulls reached a season high in points while blocking a season-best 10 shots, led by four from Vucevic, to help offset three Hawks with 20-plus points. Chicago is 1-1 in Cup games.

Atlanta’s Jalen Johnson had 25 points and 13 rebounds, Trae Young contributed 25 points and 13 assists and Clint Capela amassed 21 points and 11 rebounds. The Hawks are 2-1 in Cup play.

Rockets 116, Trail Blazers 88

Dillon Brooks scored a season-high 28 points and Tari Eason added 22 off the bench as Houston rolled to a victory over visiting Portland.

Brooks shot 10 of 15 from the floor and finished 6-for-8 on 3-pointers, leading Houston to its seventh win in its past eight games. The Rockets improved to 2-0 and the Trail Blazers are 1-1 in West Group A of the NBA Cup.

Shaedon Sharpe and Deni Avdija scored 13 points apiece for the Trail Blazers. Portland shot 33 percent while committing 21 turnovers, which the Rockets converted into 28 points.

Clippers 104, Kings 88

James Harden had 22 points and nine assists and Derrick Jones Jr. added 17 points as Los Angeles extended its winning streak to four games by beating visiting Sacramento in Inglewood, Calif.

The Clippers extended their home winning streak to seven games and have won consecutive games without leading scorer Norman Powell (23.3 points per game), who is out with a left hamstring strain. The Clippers improved to 1-1 and the Kings fell to 0-2 in West Group A of the NBA Cup.

De’Aaron Fox scored 29 points and Domantas Sabonis added 24 points with 15 rebounds after missing the previous two games with a back injury. DeMar DeRozan chipped in 16 points after missing three games with his own back issue.

NFL News: Giants grant goodbye request, waive QB Daniel Jones

Quarterback Daniel Jones asked for and was granted his release from the New York Giants on Friday.

“Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him,” Giants president John Mara said. “We mutually agreed that would be best for him and for the team.

“Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way. His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that. We are all disappointed in how things have worked out. We hold Daniel in high regard and have a great appreciation for him. We wish him nothing but the best in the future.”

Jones was demoted to a scout team safety in Thursday’s practice, three days after head coach Brian Daboll made the decision to turn to former undrafted free agent Tommy DeVito as the team’s starting quarterback. He admitted Thursday after practice he was “still processing” whether to further discussions with general manager Joe Schoen and “trying to think through what the best thing is for this team and what the best thing is for me.”

Daboll said Friday after practice that he had multiple conversations with Jones before he departed the team facility for likely the final time.

“I’ve got a ton of respect for him. Again, he came in and talked to Mr. Mara, had a good conversation. I’ve had a conversation with Daniel, a couple of them today, good conversations and wish him the best,” Daboll said.

Daboll said he came away from the week feeling the sense of disappointment one might expect because of his own track record developing quarterbacks. However, he said he didn’t anticipate Monday’s decision to demote Jones would end this way.

“No, again, this was not an easy situation when things happen like this. He came in this morning and talked with Mr. Mara. They had their discussion,” Daboll said. “We talked and thought it was best for him to be able to do that. He put a lot into it, he’s a great young man. It’s never easy.”

DeVito will make his first start of the season for the NFC East cellar-dwelling Giants (2-8) on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-6) in East Rutherford, N.J.

DeVito, 26, played in nine games (six starts) as a rookie in 2023 following Jones’ season-ending knee injury. He was 3-3 as a starter, throwing for 1,101 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions.

Jones was left to say his public goodbye on Thursday.

“The opportunity to play for the New York Giants was truly a dream come true and I am extremely grateful … for the chance to play here,” Jones said. “The Giants are truly a first-class organization and I have nothing but genuine respect and appreciation for the people who built it and who help carry on the tradition. I’ve met so many special people and created relationships that will truly last a lifetime. Thank you to all my teammates, coaches and staff that have done so much for me these past six years. There have been some great times, but of course we all wish there had been more of those.”

Ranked 32nd among all qualified quarterbacks in passer rating this season, Jones has eight touchdowns and seven interceptions in 2024.

His contract included an injury guarantee that meant had Jones gotten injured this season, the Giants would have been on the hook to pay him $23 million in 2025. The Giants reportedly didn’t want to risk paying the injury guarantee only to likely cut ties with him in the offseason.

Now, Jones will go through waivers, although it is unlikely a team would pick up the remainder of the four-year, $160 million contract he signed in March 2023. New York, in turn, will absorb more than $20 million in dead money.

Jones, 27, was a first-round pick in 2019. He suffered a season-ending ACL tear last season but returned in time to start the season as the No. 1 quarterback. He was benched with a record of 3-13 over his past 16 starts.

“I take full responsibility for my part in not bringing more wins. No one wanted to win more games worse than me, and I gave everything I had on the field and in my preparation,” Jones said. “Of course, this season has been disappointing for all, and of course I wish I could’ve done more. I’m 100 percent accountable for my part. I did not play well enough, consistently enough to help the team get the results. The reality of the NFL is it’s hard to win games and requires consistent performance from everyone involved. We didn’t do that well enough so the idea to change something happens, and I understand.

“I love the game, I love being part of a team and I’m excited for the next opportunity. I know that there’s a lot of good football in front of me and I’m excited about that,” Jones said. “To all fans, I have deep respect and appreciation for your passion and love for the Giants. The fans are huge part of what makes playing for the Giants so special.”

Jones was 24-44-1 as a starter with 70 touchdown passes and 47 interceptions in 70 games (69 starts) since being selected by the Giants with the No. 6 overall pick in 2019 NFL Draft.

NHL News: Flyers look to regain footing in matinee vs. Blackhawks

A 4-0-1 run earlier this month lifted the spirits of the Philadelphia Flyers.

A pair of losses, however, has served as a reminder how far the Flyers must travel as they head into Saturday afternoon’s clash against the visiting Chicago Blackhawks.

Last Saturday, Philadelphia reached the NHL’s version of .500 thanks to a 5-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres that kicked off a five-game homestand on a positive note. The Flyers were snapped back to reality with a 3-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Monday and a 4-1 defeat against the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday.

The Flyers were tied 1-1 with the Hurricanes going into the third period before being undone by turnovers.

“The thing that bothers me the most, and I think it’s the biggest correction we have to make, is we have to manage the puck better in the neutral zone,” Philadelphia coach John Tortorella said. “(Carolina) wins so many sword fights in the neutral zone, the 50-50s. They have such good sticks. You think you’re going to get a pass by them, or you think you’ll be able to skate by them one-on-one, and they get you.”

The good news for the Flyers is they know the issue and that it can be addressed.

“We were hanging right with them, thought we were doing a good job through the first 40 (minutes),” defenseman Nick Seeler said. “We got away from our game.”

The loss also snapped Travis Konecny’s seven-game point streak in which he had collected 13 points (six goals, seven assists).

The Blackhawks arrive on a positive note during what’s already a trying season. Chicago snapped a three-game losing skid with a 3-1 home victory over the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers on Thursday.

While The Blackhawks remain tied with the Nashville Predators for the fewest points in the league (15), they can see positives if they follow the plan.

“We had a commitment to winning hockey,” forward Nick Foligno said. “You know, it wasn’t perfect. It never really is, but it’s just you’re not making blatant errors and taking the life out of your own game. … That’s the big message here; it’s great, and we’re really excited about winning, and let’s do it again.”

Despite facing the defending champs, the Blackhawks set an early tone with a first-period goal and seized a 2-0 lead midway through the second.

That said, rising star Connor Bedard is mired in an 11-game goal drought. The 2023 first overall draft pick and last season’s Calder Memorial Trophy recipient as the NHL’s rookie of the year failed to register a shot on goal in 19:32 of ice time against the Panthers.

“I think he played a good game,” Blackhawks coach Luke Richardson told The Athletic of Bedard. “I thought he back-checked really hard to basically even up a two-on-one in the second period and stopped in front of the net. We didn’t get him here to be a defensive specialist, but the responsibility of playing against good lines comes first. … He did everything right on the defensive side of the game against one of the top centermen in the league, playing against (Aleksander) Barkov’s line. It was a great game for him.”

Clippers turn away Kings for seventh straight win at home

James Harden had 22 points and nine assists and Derrick Jones Jr. added 17 points as the Los Angeles Clippers extended their winning streak to four games with a 104-88 victory Friday against the visiting Sacramento Kings at Inglewood, Calif.

Kevin Porter Jr. scored 14 points, Amir Coffey had 11 and Ivica Zubac added 10 points with 15 rebounds as the Clippers extended their home winning streak to seven games after losing the first four contests in their new arena.

Los Angeles won consecutive games without leading scorer Norman Powell (23.3 points per game), who is out with a left hamstring strain.

The Clippers improved to 1-1 and the Kings fell to 0-2 in West Group A of the NBA Cup.
