NFL News: Commanders coach Dan Quinn: Jayden Daniels’ elbow injury is 100% on me

There is no clear timetable for Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels’ return from the dislocated left elbow he sustained in Sunday night’s 38-14 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, coach Dan Quinn told reporters Monday.

Quinn said the team is still gathering information on the extent of the injury, which occurred when Daniels’ arm bent the wrong direction while taking a fourth-quarter sack from Drake Thomas.

Daniels had an MRI exam Monday morning, and the head coach said they should have a better idea of Daniels’ status by Wednesday or Thursday of this week, but he knows a return wouldn’t be any time soon regardless.

“It’ll knock him out for a while for sure,” Quinn said.

This is the third separate injury Daniels has sustained this season, limiting him from building on his breakout Offensive Rookie of the Year campaign in 2024 which saw him throw for 3,568 yards and 25 touchdowns while rushing for 891 yards and six scores.

He missed two games with a knee injury sustained in Week 2 vs. Green Bay, returned for two games before sustaining a hamstring injury vs. Dallas in Week 7 that knocked him out of another game and returned once more Sunday before getting hurt once again.

During his opening statement Monday, Quinn also admitted his role in why the team’s standout starting quarterback was still playing in a game the Commanders were trailing 38-7 with less than eight minutes left.

“I get (why you have been asking about that),” Quinn said. “I’ve been thinking about it, honestly, non-stop too. For me, the answer is I missed it. … 100%, that’s on me.”

The Commanders (3-6) have lost their past four games after reaching last season’s NFC championship game. In more bad news, Quinn said Monday that he would consider receiver Terry McLaurin (quadriceps) doubtful to return Sunday vs. Detroit.

NWSL News: Report: NWSL attendance drops 5% in 2025

The NWSL’s 182-game regular season in 2025 drew an average of 10,669 fans, which was down 5% from last year’s record high, according to a report by the Sports Business Journal.

The Portland Thorns FC passed last year’s leader, Angel City FC, with a league-best average of 18,173 fans per match. By contrast, the San Diego Wave saw the biggest drop in falling 26% to 13,427 in their first season without the retired Alex Morgan, who is now part of the team’s ownership group.

The Wave led the NWSL in attendance just two years ago, but their attendance is down 35% since then despite qualifying for the playoffs in 2025.

The NWSL’s 2025 season attendance was close to even with attendance figures from two years ago, with eight of the 15 NWSL franchises seeing a year-over-year decline from 2024. Of those, five experienced double-digit drops, according to the report.

It is a similar decline from the 5% drop that Major League Soccer saw for its 2025 regular season schedule.

On the positive side, the NJ/NY Gotham FC, North Carolina Courage, Washington Spirit and Orlando Pride all set new franchise records for single-season attendance, while seven of the 12 teams that have been in the league for more than two seasons were still up from their 2023 attendance figures.

MLS News: Marko Mitrovic appointed head coach of Revolution

0

The New England Revolution named Marko Mitrovic their head coach on Friday.

The 47-year-old becomes the 10th head coach in club history. This is his first Major League Soccer head coaching job after more than 15 years at the international and pro levels.

“During the interview process, Marko’s tactical acumen and modern coaching philosophies set him apart,” said Curt Onalfo, New England’s sporting director. “It’s crystal clear that he shares our ambitions to compete for trophies in 2026 and beyond. His extensive coaching experience at both the club and international levels, including on some of the world’s biggest stages, have prepared him well for this pivotal role.”

Those jobs include coaching the United States Under-20s to the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup quarterfinals and leading the U.S. Under-23s to the same round at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

He had been with U.S. Soccer since 2022 and previously served as an assistant coach for Chicago Fire FC from 2016-19.

“It’s an honor to join the Revolution and become the new head coach of this storied club,” Mitrovic said. “I will work relentlessly to deliver a team the fans will be proud to support. I’m excited to get started.”

Before coaching in the U.S. Mitrovic coached national and pro teams in his native Serbia, filling his first head coaching role in 2013 with Red Star Belgrade Under-15 club.

His playing career began in 1995 and lasted 16 seasons with clubs in Serbia, Hungary, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan.

In New England, he replaces Caleb Porter, who was dismissed in September, and interim head coach Pablo Moreira. New England finished 11th in the Eastern Conference with a record of 9-16-9 (36 points).

NHL News: Flames host Blackhawks, aiming for third straight victory

With back-to-back victories for the first time this season, the Calgary Flames will try to make it three in a row when they host the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday night.

The Flames, who opened the season with a 4-3 shootout win at Edmonton, then won just once over a 12-game stretch before defeating Philadelphia, 2-1, on Sunday and followed that up with 5-1 victory over visiting Columbus on Wednesday.

Lack of scoring has been a major reason for the slow start for Calgary, which sits last in the NHL standings with 10 points in 15 games. The Flames rank 31st out of 32 teams with an average of 2.33 goals per game and have scored two goals or less nine times, including five games with just one goal.

However, Wednesday’s win marked the second time in six games that Calgary hit the five-goal mark in a game. The Flames needed just 92 seconds to jump out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Morgan Frost and Blake Coleman.

“Pucks are starting to go in, so we’ve just got to stay with the way we play and play hard,” Coleman, who leads the team with six goals, said. “A lot of games that we weren’t winning a couple weeks ago we deserved a better fate in. We knew eventually it would turn. That’s just the way the game works.”

Getting off to a quick start is key according to forward Joel Farabee.

“If we keep starting games like that, we’re a tough team to play against,” Farabee said. “When we’re on our toes and putting pressure on the other team, we’re going to create a lot of turnovers and get our chances. The first 10 games or so the puck wasn’t going in for us, and now it is.”

Despite the slow start to the season, the Flames, last in the Pacific Division, are just six points out of the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

“It feels good to start getting some wins,” Coleman said. “Usually that’s a contagious feeling in the room and we can build on it.”

Chicago will be playing the fifth game of a season-high six-game road trip that began with losses at Winnipeg, Edmonton and Seattle before a 5-2 victory at Vancouver on Wednesday.

The contest with the Canucks was 0-0 after two periods before the Blackhawks exploded for four goals in the span of 11:37 to start of the third period, highlighted by a hat trick by Tyler Bertuzzi. Connor Bedard added an empty-net goal and an assist and Spencer Knight made a season-high 43 saves for Chicago.

“I thought we were really good in the third,” Blackhawks coach Jeff Blashill said. “We talked about, ‘Good teams find a way to win this game. You’re on the road. It’s 0-0. You probably haven’t played your best. Go out and have a great period.’ And I thought they did.”

The win snapped an 11-game losing streak to Vancouver for the Blackhawks dating back to Jan. 31, 2022.

Bertuzzi became the seventh Blackhawks player in the last 30 years to score a hat trick in a single period and the first since Taylor Raddysh did it in the third period on March 14, 2023. It was his fourth career hat trick.

“He’s a guy you appreciate more from ice level than you might from up top,” Blashill said. “Skating doesn’t always look great but man he wins pucks, and that’s kind of who he’s always been for me. He’s great on that back post.”

NFL News: Cowboys DE Marshawn Kneeland dead at 24; suicide suspected

Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland died Thursday morning, with his death caused by an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

He was 24.

Police in Frisco, Texas, issued a news release outlining events that began Wednesday night and resulted with his body being found Thursday morning.

The Frisco department said it was asked by the Texas Department of Public Safety around 10:40 p.m. to help locate a vehicle that had evaded troopers during a pursuit that entered Frisco. Troopers found the car minutes later after it crashed on southbound Dallas Parkway.

The driver, identified as Kneeland, abandoned the car and walked away from the scene. The Texas DPS said a trooper had tried to pull him over for an alleged traffic violation and he did not stop.

After instituting a search using both K-9 and drone units, law enforcement found Kneeland dead at 1:31 a.m. Frisco police said they learned Keeland had expressed suicidal thoughts.

The cause of death officially will be determined by the Collin County medical examiner.

TMZ posted audio of the discussion between the dispatcher and responding officers on its website Thursday afternoon. On the tape, the dispatcher lets the officers in the field know that he had taken a call from a woman identified as Kneeland’s girlfriend, who reported that he was armed, had a history of mental health challenges and would “end it all.” She added he had been sending goodbye messages via text to loved ones.

Police in Plano, Texas, where Kneeland lived, told the Dallas Morning News that they had been asked to do a wellness check at the player’s home and that he was not there. Per the conversation between the dispatcher and officers, that request came directly from the NFL.

The officers said they had used a heat-sensing tool to pinpoint a person in a portable toilet and said they saw blood coming from it before they approached.

The Cowboys announced the death of Kneeland, a second-year player, earlier in the morning.

“It is with extreme sadness that the Dallas Cowboys share that Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away this morning,” the statement said. “Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization. Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family.”

The Cowboys selected him in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft. The Western Michigan alum had 18 appearances (four starts) in his career, recording 26 tackles, four quarterback hits, one sack and one fumble recovery.

On Monday, in the Cowboys’ 27-17 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, he recovered a blocked punt in the second quarter to score his first career touchdown.

Agent Jonathan Perzley, of Sportstars Inc. issued a statement about his client.

“I watched him fight his way from a hopeful kid at Western Michigan with a dream to being a respected professional for the Dallas Cowboys. Marshawn poured his heart into every snap, practice, and every moment on the field,” the statement read. “To lose someone with his talent, spirit and goodness is a pain I can hardly put into words. My heart aches for his family, his teammates and everyone who loved him. And I hope they feel the support of the entire football community during this unimaginable time. I ask that you please give his loved ones the privacy and compassion they need as they grieve this tremendous loss.

Kneeland experienced heartbreak a few years ago when his mother, Wendy Kneeland, died before the draft.

“It was definitely tough,” Kneeland said after the draft. “I just managed it. She helped me a lot in my younger years getting into football. I always had the dream. I always told her, ‘I’m going to the NFL’ and I made it.”

NHL News: Red Wings, Rangers aim to capitalize on chances following shutouts

The New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings are trying to rebound from losses. The first order of business is to score a goal.

Both teams endured shutout defeats in their last outing — the Rangers fell to Carolina 3-0 on Tuesday while the Red Wings were blanked by Vegas 1-0 the same night. They’ll meet up in Detroit on Friday night.

Scoring struggles have been the norm for the Rangers this season. In seven of their eight losses, including overtime, they have scored one or no goals. Their power play has been punchless, converting on just four of 36 opportunities.

“I don’t know, honestly,” forward Mika Zibanejad said of the scoring woes. “We keep talking about having good looks. We keep talking about the stuff we do well and try to build on it. I feel like we’re at three or four or maybe five Grade-As and we don’t score. The puck just has got to go in.

“Other than that we have to keep going. We have to find a way to put the puck in the net. I don’t know. I don’t think I’ve ever been a part of something like this before in terms of getting looks and not scoring. It’s frustrating.”

Most of their troubles have come at home, including the matchup with the Hurricanes. All six of New York’s victories have occurred on the road.

“These guys are human, they care a lot about what’s going on,” Rangers coach Mike Sullivan said. “Of course we want to be a team that prides itself on being good at home, being stingy at home, making this a tough place for people to play. I thought when you look at how the game was played in the first two periods there was a lot to like about our game. Some of the quality looks, I’m not sure we could get better looks.”

For the Red Wings, the loss to the Golden Knights capped a 3-2 road trip.

“It was a close game,” coach Todd McLellan said. “There were chances both ways, but the goaltenders stood in there fairly well. We gave ourselves a chance to win. It would have been nice to have been a little more effective on, at least, the one full power play that we had. That may have been our opportunity, but just not enough sustained offensive time.”

Detroit now enters a stretch in which it will play seven of eight games at home.

The Red Wings carry a five-game home winning streak into Friday’s contest. Their lone loss at home came in their season opener against Montreal.

“Very exciting,” team captain Dylan Larkin said. “It’s always a tough challenge to come back home after a long trip out west. We’re going to have to be ready, and it’s going to be exciting. We’ve built some momentum, and we’ll have great crowds. We want to continue where we left off at home and that’s the exciting part.”

Larkin leads Detroit in scoring with eight goals and 18 points.

NHL News: Red Wings F Patrick Kane (upper body) returns to practice

Nine-time All-Star forward Patrick Kane returned to practice on Thursday with the Detroit Red Wings after being sidelined with an upper-body injury since Oct. 17.

He practiced on his usual forward line with Marco Kasper and Alex DeBrincat, and also on the first power-play unit.

Kane, who turns 37 on Nov. 19, was not ready to say he will play in a game this weekend. The Red Wings host the New York Rangers on Friday night and the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday afternoon.

“We’ll see,” Kane told reporters after Thursday’s practice. “I’m feeling pretty good. It was nice to get back into practice with the team today. Other than that, I feel pretty good and we’ll go from there.

“We’ll see how it is (Friday). I don’t think there’s any real decision on when I’m back or anything like that.”

Kane crashed into the boards late in Detroit’s 2-1 overtime win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Oct. 17.

In his third season with the Red Wings and 19th overall in the NHL, Kane was off to a strong start with five points (two goals, three assists) in five games. He signed a one-year, $3 million deal on June 30.

Kane had been skating on his own for a couple of weeks and said he felt progress in the last “four or five days.”

“I was pretty confident I was going to be able to get through a practice and skate with the team,” Kane said. “But you never know until you get into it, so I’m happy I was able to do that and participate and go the whole way.”

Red Wings coach Todd McLellan said he checked on Kane a couple of times on Thursday.

“He said he felt pretty good, so I think that’s positive. But that decision will be made tomorrow when we get a little more information,” McLellan said.

Kane has 494 goals and 854 assists (1,348 points) in 1,307 career regular-season games with the Blackhawks (2007-23), Rangers (2023) and Red Wings. He won three Stanley Cups with Chicago and became the first American player to win the Hart Memorial Trophy (league MVP) and the Art Ross Trophy (leading point-scorer).

The first overall pick of the 2007 NHL Draft by Chicago, Kane is 27 points from passing Mike Modano (1,374) for the most by a U.S.-born player.

Jalen Green makes impressive season debut, leads Suns past Clippers

Jalen Green scored 29 points and sank six 3-pointers in his season debut as the host Phoenix Suns beat the short-handed Los Angeles Clippers 115-102 on Thursday.

Devin Booker added 24 points, Grayson Allen produced 18 points and four 3-pointers and Royce O’Neale had 17 points and five threes for the Suns, who made 19 treys, one short of a season high. Phoenix won for the third time in four games.

Ivica Zubac amassed a season-high 23 points and 11 rebounds, Cam Christie logged 17 points and John Collins had 13 for the Clippers, who took their third straight defeat.

Los Angeles played without leading scorers Kawhi Leonard and James Harden.

Leonard (24.3 points per game) missed his second straight game due to a sprained right knee. Harden (23.3) did not play for personal reasons, the Clippers announced.

Without them, the Clippers could not keep up after staying close for a half. They fell to 0-3 on the road.

The Suns blew the game open with a 33-11 run in the third quarter for an 84-64 lead. O’Neale made three 3-pointers in that spurt, and Booker sank two of his three threes.

The Suns outscored the Clippers 40-23 in the third and stretched their lead to as many as 25 points in the fourth. Los Angeles got within 11 with two minutes left but never pulled closer.

Green, who missed Phoenix’s first eight games because of a right hamstring strain, was on a time restriction and played 23 minutes.

Mark Williams wound up with 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Suns, who won for the fourth time in five home games.

The Suns shot 44.6% from the floor and made 19 of 49 3-point attempts (38.8%).

The Clippers hit 44.3% from the field and were 10 of 31 (32.3%) from long distance.

Bradley Beal had five points on 2-of-14 shooting for the Clippers in his first game in Phoenix since being waived in the offseason. The Suns bought out the final two years and $11 million of Beal’s contract before he signed a two-year, $11 million deal with then Clippers.

The Clippers will face the Suns in the second game of a back-to-back on Saturday in Inglewood, Calif. The teams have split the first two games of their four-game season series.

Heat, Hornets play early-season rematch in NBA Cup opener

The Miami Heat, who have played a road-heavy schedule so far, return home to face the Charlotte Hornets on Friday night in an NBA Cup matchup.

Miami is 2-0 at home but just 2-4 on the road, having just concluded a 1-3 trek out west.

However, the Heat finished the trip ranked fourth in the NBA in scoring (122.4 points per game) and eighth in both field-goal percentage (49.5%) and 3-point percentage (38.8%). The Heat also rank fourth in assists (29.5 per game).

Center Bam Adebayo leads Miami in rebounds (8.1 per game), and he ranks second on the club in scoring (19.9 ppg). However, he left Miami’s loss at Denver on Wednesday after just eight minutes due to an injury to his left big toe.

Adebayo, a three-time All-Star and Miami’s team captain, will miss the Friday game.

“It’s definitely tough,” Heat wing Norman Powell said of Adebayo’s injury.

The Heat remain without 2025 All-Star Tyler Herro, who has yet to play this season due to an ankle injury.

Powell, who is new to the Heat this season, leads Miami in scoring (23.2 ppg) and 3-point percentage (51.7%). Davion Mitchell tops the squad in assists (7.9 per game).

Kel’el Ware, a 7-footer who was Miami’s first-round pick in 2024, likely will start in Adebayo’s place. He is averaging 10.1 points and 7.4 rebounds while shooting 41.7% on 3-point attempts and 64.5% from inside the arc.

Charlotte, which is just 1-3 on the road this season, has lost four of its past five games overall. That stretch includes a 144-117 defeat at Miami on Oct. 28.

In that game, the Heat got 28 points from Jaime Jaquez Jr., 26 from Adebayo and 21 from Andrew Wiggins. Powell sat out due to a groin injury.

Charlotte was led by LaMelo Ball, who had 20 points, eight rebounds and nine assists. Rookie Kon Knueppel added 19 points, but Brandon Miller was sidelined due to a shoulder injury.

Miller, who missed 55 games last season because of a wrist injury, is expected to be re-evaluated within two weeks.

Perhaps even more daunting for the Hornets is the status of Ball, who missed the past two games due to an right ankle injury. He was listed as questionable for Sunday.

In addition, Josh Green, who started 67 games for Charlotte last season, has yet to play in this campaign following shoulder surgery, and Grant Williams is still recovering from knee surgery.

Given those injuries, the Hornets are starting three rookies: first-rounder Knueppel and second-rounders Sion James and Ryan Kalkbrenner. Another rookie, first-rounder Liam McNeeley, is contributing off the bench.

Knueppel, a 6-foot-6 forward from Duke and the fourth pick in the draft, is averaging 14.6 points and 5.8 rebounds.

James, a 6-foot-5 guard also out of Duke and the 33rd pick, is producing 8.8 points per contest.

Kalkbrenner, a 7-foot-1 center from Creighton and the 34th pick, is averaging 9.1 points and 7.1 rebounds.

Those players give hope to a franchise that won just 19 games last season and endured its ninth straight year without a playoff berth, the longest active drought in the NBA.

Led by MVP Knueppel, the Hornets won the 2025 Vegas Summer League for the first time in franchise history.

But Charles Lee, who is in his second year as Hornets coach, wants his young team focusing on defense.

“On one-on-one situations, can we close the gap a bit more?” Lee said. “Get into the ball. That’s one area of physicality that we can bring.”

NFL News: Sauce Gardner debuts for Colts vs. Falcons in first Berlin NFL game

The Atlanta Falcons and Indianapolis Colts each hope an international trip can help fix recent setbacks as the teams meet in Berlin, Germany, on Sunday in the city’s first NFL game.

Indianapolis (7-2) will serve as the game’s ‘designated home team’ for the league’s fifth game played in Germany. The NFL has played a pair of games in both Munich and Frankfurt, including a Colts win over the Patriots two seasons ago in Frankfurt.

The excitement level for going overseas for Indianapolis — which had its four-game winning streak snapped Sunday with a 27-20 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers — might pale in comparison to the energy created by acquiring a new star in the secondary on Tuesday.

The Colts sent a pair of first-round picks and wide receiver Adonai “AD” Mitchell to the New York Jets for two-time first-team All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner. The 25-year-old played the first seven games this season before missing the Jets’ Week 8 win at Cincinnati in concussion protocol. New York had a bye last weekend. Indianapolis announced Thursday that Gardner cleared concussion protocol and is expected to play against Atlanta.

“I think everyone’s fired up,” Colts head coach Shane Steichen said of the addition. “Any time you can add an elite player to your football team, I think the energy level and juice adds excitement to the building.”

The move looks to complement the league’s highest-scoring offense (32.2 points per game), led by the NFL’s surprise leader in passing yards Daniel Jones (2,404) and the league’s leader in rushing yards Jonathan Taylor (895).

Favored over the freefalling Falcons, Steichen doesn’t want the outside noise to result in overlooking Atlanta.

“We’re not worried about the future. We’re worried about getting better today and getting ready to go play the Falcons,” Steichen said. “The future will take care of itself, but if we worry about the future, that’s going to hurt us in the long run.”

Since an Oct. 13 win over the Buffalo Bills, Atlanta (3-5) has seen itself quickly fall to the bottom half of the NFC standings. A year that had postseason expectations has been derailed by three straight losses to the San Francisco 49ers, Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots.

The Falcons found a new way to lose at New England, as kicker John Parker Romo missed a would-be game-tying extra point with less than five minutes left en route to a 24-23 loss. Atlanta released Romo and signed veteran Zane Gonzalez as the team’s third kicker through 10 weeks.

A glaring issue across the Falcons’ losing stretch has been the inability to run the ball. Since Bijan Robinson ran for 170 yards in the Buffalo victory, the third-year running back has averaged just 37 yards per game in three outings since.

“Our run game is what it is right now,” Atlanta head coach Raheem Morris said. “We’ve got to find ways to get it broken out again. … We’ve played with the right physicality and right intention, we just didn’t get the exact results you want. We liked the process and we look forward to going out there and displaying it this week.”

Quarterback Michael Penix and rising star wide receiver Drake London hooked up for three touchdowns in the latest loss, career highs for both players.

The duo found success in spite of an injury-plagued offensive line. Both guards Matthew Bergeron (ankle) and Chris Lindstrom (foot) exited and didn’t return vs. New England.

Looking ahead, it appears Bergeron’s injury is the more significant of the two.

“Feel really good about Chris,” said Morris, who deemed the three-time Pro Bowler as day-to-day. “Matthew is more week-to-week. We’ll see how that goes. Obviously it doesn’t look good for this week, but you never know.”

Kyle Hinton is expected to start Sunday, as Bergeron was ruled out on Thursday and will not travel to Berlin. Atlanta defensive end Leonard Floyd (hamstring) and offensive tackle Storm Norton (foot) also were ruled out on Thursday, while Lindstrom was upgraded from a non-participant on Wednesday to limited.

For the Colts, defensive tackle DeForest Buckner (neck), cornerback Kenny Moore II (Achilles) and wide receiver Michael Pittman (glute) were among the seven players who did not practice Wednesday. Buckner also missed practice Thursday and was ruled out for the game in Berlin, while Moore and Pittman were upgraded to full participants. Wide receiver Anthony Gould (knee) and defensive ends Samson Ebukam (knee) and Tyquan Lewis (groin) did not practice.
