Key players back for Pistons entering clash vs. Suns

The Detroit Pistons could have some of their top players back in action when they host the Phoenix Suns on Thursday.

Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duren, Isaiah Stewart and Tobias Harris participated in Tuesday’s practice after missing the team’s 98-92 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday.

Franchise player Cunningham sat out the last two games due to a right wrist contusion, while Duren has four consecutive games after spraining his right ankle. Cunningham isn’t listed on Wednesday’s injury report while Duren is probable.

“I hated sitting out, even though it wasn’t that long,” Duren told the Detroit News. “You never want to be the guy who is watching. It feels good to be back with the guys. It was just a good day.”

Harris has been sidelined since sustaining a left hip injury on Dec. 30. Stewart didn’t suit up against the Clippers due to an illness, one game after erupting for a career-high 31 points in a victory over Chicago. Both players are probable to play against the Suns.

That’s 60% of the starting lineup and the team’s sixth man sidelined, and those absences caught up to the Pistons on Saturday, when the Clippers staged a late rally.

“I won’t find anything negative in what these guys did (Saturday),” coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. “To go out and compete the way they competed, as shorthanded as they were, in order to put themselves in position to even have a chance at it down the stretch, I give them a ton of credit.”

Despite the setback, the Pistons hold the top spot in the Eastern Conference. They’re in the midst of a six-game homestand. They defeated the New York Knicks and Bulls last week to kick off the home stretch. They’ll host Phoenix, Indiana and Boston prior to their next road game.

The Suns had a three-game winning streak snapped by Miami on Tuesday, 127-121. That game began a six-game road trip for Phoenix.

Their star player, Devin Booker, rolled his left ankle during the contest but was able to return in the fourth quarter. He finished with 24 points.

Booker is listed as questionable for Thursday’s game.

Booker is averaging 25.2 points, 6.5 assists and 4.1 rebounds this season but he’s not receiving much recognition from fans. He’s 17th among Western Conference players in fan votes for the All-Star Game.

“There are some super big-market teams,” Booker said. “There are guys from different countries that have a whole country behind them. I kind of understand the process, but am I playing better than a lot of guys? For sure, but that’s not the setup.”

Teammate Grayson Allen knows how valuable Booker is to the Suns, who are a surprising 24-16 through 40 games. They’ll hit the midway point of the season on Thursday.

“Definitely doesn’t match up with his body of work and what he’s done this season,” Allen said of the All-Star voting. “It’s a little surprising from that standpoint, but that’s the fan voting. I’m a little surprised he’s that low. It’s not based on his performance that’s for sure.”

Wing player Dillon Brooks is in danger of receiving a league suspension. He picked up his league-high 14th technical of the season in Miami. Two more technicals would trigger an automatic one-game suspension.

This will be the first of two matchups between Phoenix and Detroit. The Suns will host the Pistons on Jan. 29.

Report: Wizards star G Trae Young to sit out through All-Star break

The Washington Wizards will wait to reevaluate recently acquired guard Trae Young’s right leg injuries until after the All-Star break in mid-February, ESPN reported on Wednesday afternoon.

A four-time All-Star, Young has not played for the Wizards since they acquired him last week from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for veteran guard CJ McCollum and forward Corey Kispert on Jan. 7.

Young, 27, is recovering from MCL and quad injuries and hasn’t played since Dec. 27, scoring nine points with 10 assists in the Hawks’ 128-125 loss to the visiting New York Knicks. Young played in 10 games this season for the Hawks and averaged 19.3 points and 8.9 assists — both the lowest since his rookie season — and 1.5 rebounds while shooting 41.5% from the field and 30.5% from 3-point range.

He led the league last season with 11.6 assists per game. Young’s career average of 9.8 assists per game is the third highest in NBA history behind only Hall of Famers Earvin “Magic” Johnson and John Stockton.

Over eight seasons and 493 games (all starts), Young has averaged 25.2 points and 3.5 rebounds per contest.

The fifth overall pick of the 2018 NBA Draft, Young was selected to the All-Star Game in 2020, 2022, 2024 and 2025. He was third-team All-NBA in 2021-22.

Report: Hornets retiring Dell Curry’s No. 30 jersey

The Charlotte Hornets will retire former NBA Sixth Man of the Year Dell Curry’s No. 30 jersey on March 19, ESPN reported Wednesday.

Curry, the father of Golden State Warriors guards Stephen and Seth Curry, will be honored during a game against the Orlando Magic.

Curry played 10 of his 16 NBA seasons in Charlotte (1988-98) and is currently in his 17th season as the team’s TV analyst. He ranks first in franchise history in games (701), second in points (9,839) and fourth in steals (747).

Curry, 61, will join the late Bobby Phills (No. 13) as the only players to have their jerseys retired by the Hornets.

A first-round pick by Utah (15th overall) in 1986, Curry averaged 11.7 points and shot 40.2% from 3-point range over 1,083 career games with the Jazz, Cleveland Cavaliers, Hornets, Milwaukee Bucks and Toronto Raptors. He was voted the league’s top sixth man in 1993-94.

Magic hoping for ‘home’ advantage over Grizzlies in Berlin

Orlando’s Moe Wagner, his younger brother Franz and Tristan da Silva are ready to embrace a homecoming on Thursday when the Magic and Memphis Grizzlies tip off their European tour in Berlin.

The German-born trio will compete at the 17,000-seat Uber Arena on Thursday. The game serves as the 14th featuring an NBA team in Germany since 1984, and the league’s first regular-season contest in the country.

“We’re here driving through the city, we’re seeing our friends (and) we’re combining our two worlds together,” Moe Wagner said, per the Orlando Sentinel. “That means the world to us. So, that’s the main thing for me.”

The teams will reconvene at The O2 in London on Sunday.

Moe Wagner returned to the court last Sunday for the first time since tearing his left ACL in December 2024. He recorded eight points in 10 minutes off the bench in the Magic’s 128-118 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans.

Franz Wagner is available to join him on the court Thursday after missing Orlando’s past 16 games due to an ankle injury.

“I feel good,” Franz Wagner said, per the Orlando Sentinel. “It felt good to move a little bit after the long flight. And I’m excited for Thursday.”

So are the Magic, given Franz Wagner has averaged a robust 22.7 points and 6.1 rebounds over 24 games this season. The German-born da Silva contributes 9.8 points for Orlando, which has alternated wins and losses over its past 14 games.

Former Grizzlies forward Desmond Bane (27 points), Anthony Black (26) and Paolo Banchero (23) combined for 76 points in the win over the Pelicans.

Bane will be facing his former team for the first time since he was traded to Orlando along with a 2026 first-round selection on June 15 for Cole Anthony, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Yang Hansen and a number of draft picks.

“I was hoping it’s gonna be in Memphis. It’s still really cool, really special to be able to play against them and share a court with some friends and family. It’s very special,” Bane said.

The Grizzlies lost six of their previous seven games before posting a 103-98 win over the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday.

Cedric Coward sank two late 3-pointers to highlight his 21-point performance.

Disgruntled Ja Morant previously said he “hopefully” will return to action after a five-game absence with a right calf contusion. Morant, however, has been ruled out for the Thursday game.

Memphis coach Tuomas Iisalo also expressed a semblance of optimism on Morant’s potential return, saying “there is a chance he will play in the global games.”

That said, the Grizzlies have been open to saying that the team is entertaining offers for Morant ahead of the Feb. 5 trade deadline.

Iisalo wasn’t interested in heading in that direction.

“We are not in the business of commenting on random internet reports,” Iisalo said of the two-time All-Star. “He’s progressing in the practices. He’s already able to do a lot of the parts of practice, so looking good to progress (toward playing).”

Morant was officially listed as a game-time decision in Wednesday’s injury report.

NWSL News: NWSLPA: ‘Rodman rule’ violates CBA, grievance filed

The NWSL Players Association filed a grievance with the league to call for the revocation of the new “High Impact Player” rule, contending it breaches the collective bargaining agreement and federal labor law.

The HIP mechanism announced in December permits NWSL clubs to exceed the salary cap by as much as $1 million in order to sign certain valuable players, as defined by an expansive list of criteria that includes a marketability threshold and being shortlisted for major awards.

The union opposes the “unilateral decision by the league to change how a player’s fair market value is evaluated,” NWSLPA executive director Meghann Burke said in a statement Wednesday.

“We agree that increasing investment in player compensation is necessary to remain competitive in the global labor market. The solution is straightforward and collectively bargained by raising the salary cap,” Burke said. “What the league cannot do is invent a parallel pay system outside the salary cap that was never negotiated, then limit access to compensation through league-controlled criteria that excludes some players.”

The CBA allows the NWSL to “reduce or eliminate the salary cap charge for certain roster classifications” after consulting with the NWSLPA. The league and union disagree about whether “high-impact” is a roster classification.

Dubbed the “Trinity Rodman rule,” the HIP rule was introduced as the Washington Spirit tried to negotiate a lucrative contract extension with the USWNT star and dissuade her from leaving for Europe.

Commissioner Jessica Berman vetoed a backloaded four-year contract that reportedly would have paid Rodman more than $1 million per season, framing it as an attempt to circumvent the salary cap.

The NWSLPA filed a separate pending grievance in early December to oppose the rejection of the deal.

Rodman’s previous four-year, $1.1 million contract with the Spirit expired Dec. 31, making her a free agent.

“Our goal is to ensure that the very best players in the world, including Trinity, continue to call this league home,” the NWSL said in a statement when Rodman’s contract was blocked. “We will do everything we can, utilizing every lever available within our rules to keep Trinity Rodman here.”

The Houston Dash signed North Carolina forward Kate Faasse, winner of the 2024 MAC Hermann Trophy as the top player in women’s college soccer.

Faasse, 21, finished her career with the Tar Heels with 35 goals in 88 appearances over four seasons. She led Division I with 20 goals in 27 matches in 2024 as North Carolina captured the national championship.

NWSL News: USWNT’s Sam Coffey leaves NWSL for Man City

Manchester City signed United States women’s national team midfielder Sam Coffey through June 29, the English club announced Wednesday.

ESPN reported the transfer fee was $875,000.

Coffey heads overseas from the Portland Thorns, where she was named to the National Women’s Soccer League’s Best XI in three of the past four seasons. She was part of Portland’s NWSL title team in 2022.

She also was a member of the 2024 national team that won the gold medal at the Paris Olympics in 2024. Coffey has 42 caps for the U.S. team.

With the Thorns in 2025, she posted two goals and four assists in 27 games. Portland was eliminated in the semifinal round of the playoffs.

Coffey, 27, spoke Wednesday about what she expects from her first overseas team experience.

“Manchester is not somewhere I’ve been before, but there’s something about it that I felt I was led to and called to,” she said. “I think it’s also a place that just has proven its investment in women’s soccer and being a part of this movement that is going on.

“Seeing the facilities, the support the team gets and all the efforts they are putting in for the women’s side is such a huge and positive side and something I’m honored to be a part of.”

Manchester City currently sits atop the Women’s Super League table with a six-point lead.

“Sam’s reputation as one of the world’s best speaks for itself, and we’re delighted she’s chosen to come here ahead of other potential suitors,” said Therese Sjogran, the director of football for Manchester City.

“We believe she has all the qualities needed to thrive at City and, more broadly, the WSL, and we’re excited to see how she can elevate our already superb squad of players.”

MLS News: San Diego FC M Anders Dreyer signs contract extension

0

San Diego FC midfielder Anders Dreyer signed a contract extension on Wednesday through the 2028-29 season.

The deal includes an option through the 2029-30 campaign for the reigning MLS Newcomer of the Year who also was a finalist for the MLS MVP award.

“Extending Anders’ contract was a clear priority for us heading into this season,” SDFC sporting director Tyler Heaps said. “He was able to very quickly show his value to this team through his performances, work ethic, and commitment to the group on and off the field. This extension reflects our confidence in him and our belief that he will continue to play a key role in helping us reach our objectives.”

Dreyer, 27, made an immediate impact in his debut campaign in 2025. He finished the regular season with 19 goals and a league-best 19 assists in 34 matches, with his 38 goal contributions serving as the second-most in the MLS.

The Denmark native added four goals and two assists in five postseason matches for San Diego FC.

Fellow San Diego star Hirving “Chucky” Lozano won’t be part of the team this season or in the future, according to Heaps.

“We have communicated to Hirving and his representatives that he will not be part of the sporting plans moving forward,” Heaps said. “That was not a decision that was taken lightly.”

Lozano had nine goals and 10 assists in 27 regular-season games (22 starts). But the Mexican international missed the regular-season finale and the club’s first-ever playoff match as discipline for a heated locker room altercation during halftime of a match against the Houston Dynamo on Oct. 4. The incident occurred after Lozano was told he was being removed from the match.

Lozano’s contract ran through the 2028 season and included club options for the 2029 and 2030 seasons. He received $6 million in base salary in 2025 and other guarantees that raised his income to $7.633 million, according to the MLS Players Association database.

“We all respect him for the player that he is,” coach Mikey Varas said. “Ultimately, it’s just not the right fit, and when it’s not the right fit, it’s no one’s fault.”

WTA News: Venus Williams, Coco Gauff in line for 2nd-round Australian Open clash

0

American superstars young and old could clash in the second round of the Australian Open after the draw was made Thursday in Melbourne.

Coco Gauff, 21, and Venus Williams, 45, were set on a collision course.

Williams, ranked 576th in the world, received a wild card so she can appear at the Australian Open for the first time since 2021. Her first-round foe will be 68th-ranked Olga Danilovic of Serbia.

Although she has seven career major championships, Williams has never won the Australian Open. Her best results in Melbourne were final-round appearances in 2003 and 2017, when she lost to her sister Serena Williams each time.

Gauff, who is seeded third, posted her best Australian Open performance in 2024, when she reached the semifinals. The two-time major champion will oppose No. 91 Kamilla Rakhimova of Uzbekistan in the first round.

Another U.S. player, ninth-seeded Madison Keys, will open the defense of her first Grand Slam championship by facing 90th-ranked Oleksandra Oliynykova of Ukraine. Keys’ section of the draw features a possible third-round match against No. 22 Leylah Fernandez of Canada and a potential fourth-round match vs. No. 6 Jessica Pegula of the United States.

Top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, the runner-up to Keys in 2025, will open vs. No. 118 Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah of France.

On the men’s side, two-time defending champion Jannik Sinner of Italy, seeded second, begins the event by opposing No. 93 Hugo Gaston of France.

Top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz of Spain will begin against a home-country favorite as he meets No. 80 Adam Walton of Australia.

Fourth-seeded Novak Djokovic, a 10-time Australian Open champion, faces No. 71 Pedro Martinez of Spain in the first round. Djokovic is on Sinner’s half of the draw, setting up a possible semifinal — if each wins his first five matches.
