Wings hopeful Paige Bueckers can face Liberty in home-and-home finale

Paige Bueckers has made progress from a back injury, but her availability isn’t assured when the Dallas Wings host the New York Liberty on Friday night in Arlington, Texas.

Bueckers is listed as questionable by the Wings after missing Thursday’s practice, one day prior to the latter part of the home-and-home series between the two teams. The Liberty notched an 85-76 home victory on Tuesday.

“I think it’s just a pulled muscle,” Bueckers said after Tuesday’s game. “I felt a strain, felt it tighten, so am just getting it worked out.”

Dallas coach Chris Koclanes said Thursday he’s hopeful of seeing Bueckers on the court, saying “she should be fine for (Friday).”

The Wings (8-22) certainly don’t want to be without the services of Bueckers as they attempt to halt a three-game slide.

Bueckers has recorded four consecutive 20-point outings to give her 13 on the season. She averages 18.6 points — seventh-best in the WNBA prior to Thursday’s games — to go with 5.4 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game in 24 appearances.

On Tuesday, Bueckers produced 21 points and eight rebounds despite the injury. The bigger issue in the contest was long-range shooting.

Dallas was an anemic 6 of 27 from 3-point range while New York sank 12 of 24 attempts. Jonquel Jones and Stephanie Talbot each made three for the Liberty.

“It’s really tough to beat a team that good when they shoot 50 percent from three,” said the Wings’ Maddy Siegrist, who had 13 points in her first game since June 11 due to a knee injury.

The Liberty (19-10) were led by Jones with 15 points and 10 rebounds, but Emma Meesseman also stood out in her second game since joining the squad. Meesseman scored 13 points in 24 minutes.

The two-time WNBA All-Star is back in the league for the first time since 2022 with the Chicago Sky. The Belgian has been the EuroLeague Women’s MVP in three straight seasons.

“I’ve been doing what I love and then this is the result of it,” Meesseman said after Tuesday’s win.

Sabrina Ionescu is impressed with the quick impact Meesseman has made. She’s averaging 12 points in 20.5 minutes per game.

“That’s why we really wanted her here,” Ionescu said. “It’s more just reassuring knowing that she came in, and this is what she’s done in her first two games. It hasn’t really been any transition period, it’s been like, ‘This is Liberty basketball and you fit in.'”

Liberty star Breanna Stewart (right knee) will miss her sixth straight game and might miss the rest of the month. The Wings’ Myisha Hines-Allen (left ankle) is probable after sitting out Tuesday.

The season series is tied 1-1 entering the final matchup of the campaign. Dallas recorded a 92-82 home win on July 28.

WNBA sex toy incidents linked to cryptocurrency group

A pair of reports published Thursday linked the recent rise of sex toys being thrown onto WNBA courts to a cryptocurrency group pushing a memecoin.

A spokesman for the group behind Green Dildo Coin took credit for the trend in an interview with USA Today, while The Athletic reviewed a livestream of cryptocurrency enthusiasts in which speakers celebrated a sex toy being thrown onto the Los Angeles Sparks’ court Tuesday.

The group has claimed that their memecoin’s goal was to combat a “toxic” environment in the cryptocurrency world and insisted that its members did not “dislike women’s sports,” though it’s unclear why Green Dildo Coin advocates have fixated on the WNBA.

Regardless, WNBA players and coaches have widely criticized the trend, citing safety concerns alongside the unneeded ridicule it’s brought to the league. There have been six known incidents of neon green sex toys being thrown at WNBA games since July 29, per USA Today.

The latest incident came during the Sparks’ home win over the Indiana Fever on Tuesday night. Late in the first half, after Kelsey Plum of Los Angeles shot a free throw, a sex toy was tossed onto the court landing near the feet of Fever guard Sophie Cunningham.

Earlier that day, Cunningham addressed the growing trend on her podcast, “Show Me Something,” saying, “Everyone’s trying to make sure the W is not a joke and it’s taken seriously, and then that happens. I’m like, how are we ever going to get taken seriously?”

The crypto group’s spokesman defended the stunts to USA Today.

“We didn’t do this because like we dislike women’s sports or, like, some of the narratives that are trending right now are ridiculous,” he said. “Creating disruption at games is like, it happens in every single sport, right? We’ve seen it in the NFL, we’ve seen it in hockey, you know … fans doing random things to more or less create attention.

“We knew that in order to get a voice in the space … we had to go out and do some viral stunts to save us from having to pay that influencer cabal, sacrifice our souls and the fate of the project.”

The group placed one of its sex toys on the Wall Street Bull statue in New York. And the memecoin’s value has grown more than 300 percent in the past seven days, USA Today reported.

The first major incident has led to an arrest and multiple charges for its perpetrator, Delbert Carver, who tossed a sex toy onto the Atlanta Dream’s court July 29. He was released on bond and is charged with disorderly conduct, public indecency/indecent exposure and criminal trespass.

Despite that, it is not apparent that Green Dildo Coin plans to stop its stunts.

“This is empowering to every (expletive) crypto community to start thinking outside the box,” one person said on the livestream reviewed by The Athletic. “Get creative and (expletive) do something that makes people actually laugh. Memecoins should make you laugh.”

Wings star Paige Bueckers (back) questionable vs. Liberty

Dallas Wings star rookie guard Paige Bueckers missed Thursday’s practice with a back injury and is listed as questionable for Friday’s home game against the New York Liberty.

Bueckers injured her back during the third quarter of Tuesday’s game against the Liberty in the first of a home-and-home set. She later returned but indicated after the contest that her back was bothering her.

“I think it’s just a pulled muscle. I felt a strain, felt it tighten,” Bueckers said after the contest.

Bueckers underwent treatment Thursday and coach Chris Koclanes liked her progress.

“Just rest, day-to-day,” Koclanes said. “She should be fine for tomorrow.”

Bueckers, 23, had 21 points and eight rebounds against the Liberty on Tuesday. She has recorded four consecutive 20-point outings and has 13 on the season.

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 draft is averaging 18.6 points, 5.4 assists and 4.1 rebounds in 24 games.

League-leading Lynx set to host new-look Mystics

The WNBA trade deadline impacted two teams that will square off Friday as the Washington Mystics head north to face the Minnesota Lynx in Minneapolis.

The Mystics (13-16) announced Tuesday evening that their leading scorer, Brittney Sykes, was on her way to the Seattle Storm in a trade to continue the Mystics’ build for the future. That same night, Washington started its fourth game of the season against the Chicago Sky and fell 78-64 — its lone loss to Chicago.

Another Mystics move came on Wednesday, as Washington traded forward Aaliyah Edwards to the Connecticut Sun in exchange for guard Jacy Sheldon.

In Tuesday’s defeat, rookie guard Sonia Citron led all Washington scorers with 13 points, below her 14.3 ppg average entering the day and far below the 28 points scored against Chicago seven days earlier.

“My mentality stays the same,” Citron said. “I’m going to keep playing the way I play. Obviously, there will be some adjustments that’s just what it is. Everybody just has to do a little bit more because Slim (Sykes) impacted our team in so many ways. I don’t just feel that pressure. It’s the whole team, you know? It’s just everybody doing a little bit more.”

Conversely, Minnesota (25-5) — atop the WNBA standings — only strengthened its roster with the addition of DiJonai Carrington from the Dallas Wings.

Despite losing All-Star and MVP favorite Napheesa Collier for two weeks due to an ankle sprain sustained Saturday against Las Vegas, the Lynx earned a 91-87 road win against the Seattle Storm on Tuesday night after entering halftime down eight points.

All-Star Courtney Williams led the Lynx with 20 points, 14 of which were scored in the second half. Carrington also proved key in the fourth quarter, during which she scored 10 of her 13 points.

“I’m glad to be a part of a team where we have a goal and everyone is fighting for that goal,” Carrington said. “You could just feel the energy, every huddle, every possession. This is a group of winners and I’m a winner, too. So, it’s great to be a part of it.”

Minnesota enters Friday night’s matchup on a three-game winning streak and split two previous games against the Mystics this season. Washington, with the league’s fourth-worst record, is trending in the opposite direction with three losses in a row, and the last two by double digits.

Storm hope recent addition will fuel stretch run as they visit Aces

The Seattle Storm have struggled as the WNBA playoffs approach, but the recent addition of All-Star guard Brittney Sykes should add punch to the lineup in a road battle at the Las Vegas Aces.

Seattle lost its last three games but then traded guards Alysha Clark and Zia Cooke as well as a 2026 first-round draft pick to Washington for Sykes.

Sykes is averaging 15.4 points and 4.4 assists per game in her first All-Star season. The ninth-year pro is a four-time All-Defensive team selection.

Seattle (16-14) lost its last three games by a combined 10 points. Most recently, the Storm lost 91-87 to visiting Minnesota on Tuesday after allowing 28 fourth-quarter points. Nneka Ogwumike had 23 points, six rebounds and five assists, with Erica Wheeler adding 19 points.

The game was tied at 70, but Minnesota reeled off nine points over the next 2:15. Seattle pulled within 89-87 on a 3-pointer from Wheeler with 7.3 seconds left but got no closer.

“I’m super proud of our group having had a tough game on Friday and coming back and rallying back to get us into position to win the game, ” said Storm coach Noelle Quinn. “I thought we executed really well in finding the looks that we wanted. We want to not have just moral victories.”

Las Vegas (16-14) is 7-3 in its last 10 games. On Wednesday, Las Vegas outlasted Golden State 78-72. A’ja Wilson had 27 points and seven boards, sinking all 11 of her free-throw attempts to seal the win. Wilson remains second in the WNBA in both scoring (21.5 points per game) and rebounding (9.1).

Guards Jackie Young and Jewell Loyd each tallied 14 points to help the Aces grind out the win. Las Vegas held Golden State to 39.7 percent shooting, including 4-for-22 from 3-point range.

“[We were] executing the game plan at a high level,” said Aces coach Becky Hammon in reference to her team’s defense. “[We had] more attention to detail, trying to not let those little things slip, stay[ing] on top of those little things that really help you win.”

Seattle holds a 2-1 advantage in the season series, with the two teams currently tied for sixth place in the league standings.

Mystics trade Aaliyah Edwards to Sun for Jacy Sheldon

The Washington Mystics traded forward Aaliyah Edwards to the Connecticut Sun on Thursday for guard Jacy Sheldon.

Edwards, 23, is averaging 6.0 points and 3.3 rebounds in 21 games off the Washington bench this season. She averaged 7.0 points and 4.7 boards in 55 career games (17 starts) with the Mystics.

Sheldon, 24, is averaging 7.5 points and 2.0 assists and shooting 41.2 percent from 3-point range in 28 games (17 starts) for Connecticut this season. She has career averages of 6.3 points and 2.3 assists in 68 games (43 starts) with the Dallas Wings (2024) and Sun.

Sheldon (fifth overall) and Edwards (sixth) were selected with back-to-back picks in the first round of the 2024 WNBA Draft.

The deal also gives Washington the option to swap rights for two 2026 first-round picks: the pick the Sun received from the New York Liberty for the pick the Mystics received from the Minnesota Lynx.

WTA News: WTA roundup: Canadian teen Victoria Mboko wins title in Montreal

Canadian 18-year-old Victoria Mboko completed a Cinderella run at the National Bank Open, defeating Japanese star Naomi Osaka 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 on Thursday night to capture the WTA 1000 title in Montreal.

Mboko became the third Canadian woman to win her national open following Faye Urban (1969) and Bianca Andreescu (2019). Mboko won her first WTA title of any kind and will rocket to No. 25 in the world rankings next week.

When Osaka gave her the match-winning point by hitting a back-handed shot into the net, Mboko dropped her racquet and went to her knees while covering her face.

“It’s been an incredible week here in Montreal,” Mboko said. “… I also want to thank Naomi for an incredible match. I’ve always looked up to her when I was really little, so it’s always great to play with such an amazing player like you.”

Mboko, a native of Burlington, Ontario, concluded her speech to the crowd with, “Montreal, je vous aime,” French for, “Montreal, I love you.”

Osaka’s post-match speech to the crowd was noteworthy because she did not congratulate or acknowledge Mboko.

“I don’t really want to take up too much time, so I’ll just say thank you to everyone. Thank you to my team, thank you to the ball kids, thank you to the organizers and all the volunteers and I hope you guys had a good night,” a tearful Osaka said before leaving the microphone.

Osaka, 27, was vying for her first WTA victory since February 2021, when she captured her fourth Grand Slam title at the Australian Open.

Mboko’s stunning tournament was highlighted by a straight-sets upset of No. 1 seed Coco Gauff in the Round of 16. She also took down No. 9 seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan in the semifinals, rallying from a set down just as she did in the final.

Osaka controlled the first set Thursday, winning the first three games and never facing a break point. Then came a topsy-turvy second set in which the returning player broke the server in each of the first five games, resulting in a 3-2 Mboko lead.

Mboko won a service game and broke Osaka again for a 5-2 lead en route to evening the match. After each woman broke the other to start the third set, Mboko ran the table by claiming the final five games.

The championship match featured 14 service breaks, more than half of the 25 total games.

That’s where Mboko found her advantage, as she converted 8 of 9 opportunities to break Osaka’s serve while saving 7 of 13 break points herself.

Cincinnati Open

Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain defeated Venus Williams 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round in Mason, Ohio.

Williams, 45, was in the field as a wild card as she continues her return to competitive tennis after more than a year away. Her next planned appearance will be in the U.S. Open mixed doubles draw with Reilly Opelka.

The opening day of action saw a trio of three-setters during the early action. Romania’s Sorana Cirstea beat Croatia’s Donna Vekic 6-1, 4-6, 6-3; Mexico’s Renata Zarazua rallied past Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva 3-6, 6-4, 6-2; and Germany’s Eva Lys battled past Bernarda Pera 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.

Other winners included Maya Joint of Australia, Anastasia Potapova of Russia, Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic, Aoi Ito of Japan, Olga Danilovic of Serbia, Tatjana Maria of Germany and Americans Clervie Ngounoue and Peyton Stearns.

PGA News: Akshay Bhatia fires 62 to set early pace at FedEx St. Jude

0

MEMPHIS — Akshay Bhatia fired an 8-under-par 62 in Thursday’s first round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship to grab a one-stroke lead over England’s Tommy Fleetwood in the opening event of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs.

Fleetwood made a late charge up the leaderboard by birdieing the final four holes for his 7-under 63 at TPC Southwind.

Two strokes behind Bhatia at 6-under 64 are Bud Cauley and Englishmen Harry Hall and Justin Rose. Si Woo Kim of Korea shot 65.

Collin Morikawa, Rickie Fowler, Maverick McNealy, Russell Henley and Ben Griffin are four back after 4-under 66s. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler had a chance to join them, but his short par putt on 18 slid past the hole and he settled for a 67.

Bhatia tossed aside a season filled mostly with disappointment to move atop the leaderboard. His strong start included four birdies on the front nine and an eagle-3 on the par-5 16th hole. The only blemish on Bhatia’s scorecard was a bogey on the par-4 12th. He closed in impressive fashion, following the eagle on No. 16 with birdie putts on Nos. 17 and 18.

“I felt like I wasn’t putting great throughout the day, but then those last couple putts managed to drop,” Bhatia said. “All in all, I felt like (my) iron play was nice. I just need to kind of clean up a couple things, like a couple wedge shots, and get a little more comfortable with the putter, but all in all, I felt like I was driving it nice.”

The 62 represented Bhatia’s low round on tour this season, one stroke better than his third-round total at the 3M Open last month and his opening round at the Truist Championship in May.

After opening the 2025 season with three top-10 finishes during the first three months, Bhatia has struggled. He has not recorded a top-10 since his third-place finish at The Players Championship in March. He also has missed four cuts and withdrawn after one round in another event.

“I’ve been looking at a lot of numbers that I don’t need to look at, obviously FedEx Cup, world ranking, and I’m still doing it, and I still catch myself doing it,” Bhatia said. “But I’m just really trying to have a little more peace on the golf course.

“I think this game can consume your life, your happiness, and so I’m just trying to figure out ways to change that because I feel like I don’t really want to live my life based off of an unstable game. That’s going to drive me nuts. This whole year it has, so I’m just trying to be just a little more at ease with whatever I shoot.”

Fleetwood has had five top-10 finishes this season, including a near-victory at the Travelers Championship in June when he was runner-up to Keegan Bradley.

On Thursday, he was even after seven holes, but shot 7-under across his final 11 holes.

“I felt like I hadn’t made the most of any of the chances that I had given myself (early in the round), and I think just being patient through that stretch and then I eventually got something going,” said Fleetwood, in his 15th year on Tour.

Cauley, who has never won a PGA Tour event, closed strong to make a run at Bhatia. Cauley birdied Nos. 10, 12, 15, 16 and 17, all of the putts inside 15 feet. He had moved to 7 under, but his approach on 18 found water and a bogey dropped him back to 6 under.

Hall, who played in the same group with Bhatia, had a bogey-free round. Rose, the runner-up to McIlroy at the Masters, had seven birdies and only one bogey.

The top 70 in the FedEx Cup points standings qualified for the St. Jude, but second-ranked Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland, the reigning Masters champion, opted to skip the playoff opener.

Those who finish Sunday ranked in the top 50 of the FedEx Cup points standings qualify for the second round of the playoffs to be held next week in Owings Mills, Md. The top 50 also will be eligible for each of eight PGA Tour signature events in 2026.

MLS News: Leagues Cup roundup: Red Bulls KO Juarez on PKs

0

Oscar Estupinan scored an 87th-minute equalizer, but FC Juarez fell short of the win they needed to stay alive in the Leagues Cup, losing 5-3 in a shootout against the New York Red Bulls following a 1-1 draw on Matchday 3 of opening-phase play on Thursday in Harrison, N.J.

Estupinan’s second goal of the tournament, coming via a near-post header, gave visiting Juarez (1-0-2, 6 points) brief late hope after Dylan Nealis put the Red Bulls in front in the 47th minute.

However, Juarez needed to win the shootout to finish with seven points and pass Tigres UANL and Pachuca, as the latter two teams wound up with six points. In the tiebreaker, New York goalkeeper AJ Marcucci saved an attempt by Rodolfo Pizarro before the Red Bulls’ Emil Forsberg converted the decisive kick.

The confirmed Liga MX teams advancing to the quarterfinals are, in seeding order, Toluca, Pachuca, Tigres UANL and Puebla.

The Red Bulls (1-0-2, 6 points) were eliminated with the draw as well, as they needed a win by at least four goals to stay alive.

Galaxy 4, Santos Laguna 0

Matheus Nascimento scored his second and third goals of the tournament and Los Angeles secured a place in the final eight by routing a Santos side that played the second half with nine men in Carson, Calif.

Joseph Paintsil added his fourth of the competition less than a minute in for Los Angeles (2-0-1, 7 points), which finished third on the MLS side of the standings and knocked Portland out of the four MLS quarterfinal places. The Galaxy will face second-place Liga MX finisher Pachuca later this month.

Maya Yoshida added the other goal for the Galaxy, whose 10 total goals in the opening phase are the second-most behind only Seattle’s 11.

Santos (0-3-0, 0 points) became the third Liga MX team to finish the tournament without a point. They fell to 10 men when Choco Lozano received his second yellow card in the 45th minute when it was 2-0. The visitors were down to nine shortly after Yoshida scored in first-half stoppage time, when Ramiro Sordo was issued a straight red for using abusive language as halftime began.

CD Guadalajara 2, FC Cincinnati 1

Ruben Gonzalez punished a defensive giveaway in the 57th minute with the eventual match-winning goal as visiting Guadalajara officially eliminated Cincinnati from contention.

Efrain Alvarez opened the scoring from the penalty spot for Chivas (1-1-1, 5 points), who were already eliminated, after Alan Mozo induced Tah Brian Anunga into a foul inside the penalty area.

Andres Davila Mosquera pulled a goal back in the 67th minute for Cincinnati (1-1-1, 4 points), which needed a victory by at least four goals to remain in contention.

Cincinnati manager Pat Noonan appeared to write off that possibility from the start, fielding a lineup without several regulars, including defenders Miles Robinson, Matt Miazga and DeAndre Yedlin.

Charlotte FC 2, CF Monterrey 0

Bill Tuiloma opened the scoring on a 56th-minute header to help host Charlotte close its tournament campaign with a victory.

Tyger Smalls doubled the lead four minutes later for Charlotte FC (1-1-1, 4 points), who will try to take momentum back into regular-season play. The Crown have won four straight in MLS entering their Sunday league fixture at FC Cincinnati.

David Bingham made four saves to keep the clean sheet after Charlotte FC conceded six times across their first two tournament matches.

Monterrey (0-2-1, 2 points) was shut out for the first time since a 3-0 defeat at Pachuca in both teams’ Liga MX Apertura opener on July 13.

Cruz Azul 2 (5), Rapids 2 (4)

Rafael Navarro scored his third goal of the tournament, but Colorado gave back a two-goal advantage and settled for a shootout defeat hours after the club traded joint team scoring leader Djordje Mihailovic to Toronto FC.

Andreas Maxso also scored for the Rapids (1-1-1, 4 points) in a game between already-eliminated teams played in Carson, Calif.

Willer Ditta’s deflected, 43rd-minute effort answered Maxso within two minutes, and Ignacio Rivero’s volley of Mateusz Bogusz’s cross pulled Cruz Azul (0-1-2, 4 points) level in the 78th minute.

Colorado’s Niko Hansen made 10 saves to force the penalty tiebreaker but couldn’t stop any of Cruz Azul’s PK takers. Kevin Mier saved a shootout attempt by the Rapids’ Oliver Larraz.

MLS News: Toronto FC land Rapids M Djordje Mihailovic for $8M

0

Toronto FC completed a previously reported cash-for-player trade for Colorado Rapids midfielder Djordje Mihailovic on Thursday.

The Rapids received $8 million in the trade, a club record. A report by GiveMeSport earlier this week said the deal will also include $1 million in add-ons and a sell-on percentage.

Mihailovic, 26, will join the fourth MLS club of his career. The native of Jacksonville, Fla., said in a statement that he requested the trade to Toronto.

“I want to thank everyone at the Colorado Rapids for everything they’ve done for me over the past year. This club brought me back from Europe and supported me in my dream of representing the United States in the Olympics,” Mihailovic’s statement said.

“Most recently, I asked for a move to Toronto for personal reasons, and I deeply appreciate the professionalism and understanding the Rapids showed in facilitating this transfer. I’m grateful to everyone I’ve met here; teammates, coaches, staff, and fans, and I’ll always carry those positive memories with me.”

Mihailovic joined the Rapids ahead of the 2024 season after time with the Chicago Fire (2017-20), CF Montreal (2021-22) and the Dutch club AZ Alkmaar (2023).

Mihailovic has nine goals with seven assists through 24 matches (all starts) this season, on pace to break the career highs of 11 goals he set last year. In 187 career MLS matches, Mihailovic has recorded 40 goals and 21 assists.

He has also made 11 appearances for the USMNT, scoring one goal.

“Djordje made a meaningful impact during his time in Colorado, and while we’re disappointed to see him go, especially at this stage in the season, we wish him well in the next chapter of his career,” Rapids president Padraig Smith said in a statement. “Our ambition is to build a championship contender, and we’re committed to turning Djordje’s departure into an opportunity to further strengthen the roster as we continue our quest to bring an MLS Cup back to Colorado.”

The Rapids (8-11-6, 30 points) currently occupy the ninth and final playoff position in the Western Conference, while Toronto FC ( 5-13-6, 21 points) are a distant 14 points out of ninth in the East.
