FIFA News: Report: FIFA adding another yellow card amnesty for World Cup

FIFA is planning to add a second yellow card “amnesty” period for the 2026 World Cup, The Athletic reported Monday.

The FIFA Council will meet Tuesday in Vancouver to discuss new rules ahead of the first 48-team tournament in World Cup history. That reportedly will include an additional yellow card amnesty to reduce the possibility of players missing matches in the knockout stage due to accumulation.

Players’ yellows were cleared after the quarterfinals in previous World Cups, but FIFA intends to wipe yellows after both the group stage and after the quarters, if the council approves the plan.

A player earning two bookings has traditionally resulted in a one-match suspension, and with the tournament expanding in 2026, an additional knockout round (the Round of 32) means one more opportunity for a player to pick up a yellow before they’re wiped before the quarters.

With two amnesty periods, a player will only trigger the suspension for yellow-card accumulation by getting two bookings over the three group stage games or two across the first three rounds of the knockouts preceding the semifinals.

ATP News: Alexander Blockx latest youngster to knock off high seed in Madrid

Alexander Blockx of Belgium was the latest player to secure his first career top-10 victory when he upset Canadian third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-6 (3), 6-3 on Monday in the third round of the Madrid Open.

Blockx, 21, reached the Round of 16 for the second straight ATP Masters 1000 event after first doing so at the Monte Carlo Masters.

His first career match against Auger-Aliassime, ranked fifth in the world, was by far the biggest achievement of his young career.

“In the first set, I was just trying to find my game,” Blockx said. “On my service games it went pretty smoothly, (as it did) on his service games. I had a couple of chances. But in the second set, it was one of my best levels I have played here.”

Blockx shone on his service games, winning 35 of 42 first-serve points (83.3%) and 50 of his 66 service points in all (75.8%) while firing five aces.

“I was serving amazing from the beginning of the match,” Blockx said. “I had so much confidence. I didn’t even think about panicking or losing my serve. I was playing well in the rallies, too, so I knew even if I missed a few serves, I could play the rallies.”

Blockx is the latest in a strong young contingent to earn his first top-10 victory during this tournament, after Spanish teen Rafael Jodar knocked off Australian Alex de Minaur and Croatian qualifier Dino Prizmic defeated Ben Shelton in earlier rounds.

No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev of Germany had to fend off a late stand from France’s Terence Atmane to win 6-3, 7-6 (2). Atmane trailed 5-2 in the second set but saved two match points en route to forcing the tiebreaker, where Zverev ultimately seized control.

A two-time Madrid champion (2018, 2021), Zverev has now reached the Round of 16 in all nine of his starts at the tournament.

Zverev’s next opponent will be Czech up-and-comer Jakub Mensik, the 23rd seed, who took down Russian 13th seed Karen Khachanov 6-4, 7-6 (11). Khachanov saved two match points during the tiebreaker but Mensik staved off four of Khachanov’s set-point opportunities before getting the job done.

No. 7 seed Daniil Medvedev of Russia eased past Norwegian qualifier Nicolai Budkov Kjaer 6-3, 6-2 in 69 minutes, while No. 10 Flavio Cobolli of Italy won by the same scoreline over Paraguayan qualifier Adolfo Daniel Vallejo. Medvedev and Cobolli will meet in the fourth round.

Tour veteran Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece was pleased with his performance in a 6-4, 6-2 win over Spanish qualifier Daniel Merida in 68 minutes.

“I really love the game when I get to discover tennis in such ways. Just hitting winners, missing a few times, but overall trying to take the most out of it. Seeing good rotation of my ball and seeing I can actually press and create some big shots, these are the types of moments that make me really enjoy the game,” Tsitsipas said.

His next opponent will be No. 12 Casper Ruud of Norway, who beat No. 20 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain 6-3, 6-1.

No. 16 Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina sailed past No. 18 Luciano Darderi of Italy 6-2, 6-3, and will take on Blockx in the Round of 16.

FIFA News: Tailgating to be allowed at Boston World Cup games as FIFA changes stance

In an about-face, FIFA will allow tailgating for World Cup games at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., the Boston World Cup host committee announced on Monday.

FIFA originally stated that tailgating would not be allowed at any of the 104 matches, which will be played June 11-July 19 in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Gillette Stadium will host five group-stage matches, one round-of-32 match and a quarterfinal match at the home of the NFL’s New England Patriots.

Patriots games, New England Revolution games and concerts allow tailgating at the stadium, and “there are no venue restrictions or local public safety restrictions in place that would prohibit it,” according to the committee.

While tailgating will be allowed, fewer fans will be able to participate as there are 15,000 fewer parking spots available to the public for World Cup games (5,000) compared to Patriots games (20,000).

The Metro Boston Transit Authority charges $20 round trip from Boston to Foxborough for NFL and MLS games, but the fee for World Cup games is $80. Fans will also have the option to take an express bus for $95 round trip from Boston-area locations to Gillette Stadium.

New York City announced on Monday that a fan fest for each of the city’s five boroughs will be held in conjunction with World Cup matches at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, N.J., where the MLS’ New York Red Bulls play, will also hold a fan event. Other host cities are planning similar events.

Boxing News: Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua set for 2026 fight

0

Former world heavyweight champions Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua have signed contracts to fight each other for the first time later this year, promoters confirmed Monday.

No specific date or venue has been announced for the long-awaited battle of aging British boxers, which will be broadcast live on Netflix. London’s Wembley Stadium and Dublin’s Croke Park reportedly are under consideration.

“To my friends in Great Britain — it’s happening. It’s signed,” Saudi boxing booster Turki Al-Sheikh posted on X.

“Signed, sealed, delivered! AJ v Fury is on!” Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Productions, posted on Instagram.

Fury, 37, is 35-2-1 with 24 knockouts. Fighting for the first time since 2024, he defeated Arslanbek Makhmudov by unanimous decision in a 12-round bout in London on April 11.

Joshua, 36, is 29-4 with 26 knockouts. His most recent fight was a sixth-round knockout of Jake Paul in Miami on Dec. 19, 2025.

Joshua is scheduled to face Albania’s Kristian Prenga on July 25 in Saudi Arabia. It will be Joshua’s first fight since a car accident in Nigeria last December that claimed the lives of two of his close friends.

Heads or Tails CWEB Movie Review

Heads or Tails? (7/10)

by Tony Medley

113 minutes

R

Set in the early 1900s, this Italian-American “spaghetti western” weaves real-life history with a gritty, fable-like love story. The title refers to a pivotal coin toss within the narrative, a moment that raises the stakes and echoes the themes of chance, fate, and whose version of the story “wins” in the end.

Buffalo Bill (John C. Reilly) arrives in Italy with his Wild West show. There, he faces Ercole Rupè (Mirko Artuso), a local landowner whose Italian cowboys, the butteri, rival Bill’s Americans. Santino (Allesandro Borghi), a standout buttero, secretly yearns for freedom, while Rosa (Nadia Tereszkiewicz), Rupè’s abused French wife, admires Santino and dreams of escape to America.

During the contest, Rupè bets on the Americans and instructs his men to lose on purpose. However, Santino disobeys and wins the match, humiliating both Bill and Rupè. In a fit of rage, Rupè accuses Rosa of infidelity, prompting her to shoot him dead. Rosa and Santino then flee together, heading for the American frontier. At the same time, Rupè’s wealthy father (Gianno Garko) places a bounty on Santino’s head and hires Buffalo Bill to track them down. Along their journey, the lovers encounter anarchists, bandits, and soldiers. Santino becomes an unintentional folk-hero outlaw, symbolizing rebellion against the wealthy elite. However, greed and betrayal reach a climax.

Buffalo Bill eventually catches up to Rosa and proposes a game of “heads or tails” to decide whether they will fight or if she can go free; the result of the coin toss remains ambiguous. Nevertheless, Rosa moves on, personifying both victim and avenger in a story that deliberately blurs the edges between fact, myth, and pure legend.

Directed by Alessio Rigo de Righi and Matteo Zoppis from a script by them and Carlo Salsa, this film has fine cinematography (Simone Arcangelo) and lush locations. As the latest spaghetti western, it’s not up to the three Clint Eastwood films, but it’ll do, buttressed by good performances.

While Buffalo Bill and his Wild West show visiting Europe is based on documented history, the characters Rosa and Santino, their flight to the American frontier, and most of the dramatic events—such as betrayals, bounty hunters, and Rosa’s journey are invented or stylized to evoke the feeling of a folk legend rather than a documentary-style retelling of real events. Thus, you can think of it as a “historically inspired fable”—rooted in the real world of Buffalo Bill and early 20th-century myth-making, but not a true story by factual standards.

NHL News: Hurricanes sweep Senators in first-round series

Logan Stankoven’s power-play goal midway through the third period broke a tie for Carolina, and the Hurricanes never trailed in defeating host Ottawa 4-2 on Saturday afternoon to eliminate the Senators from the playoffs.

The Hurricanes completed a four-game sweep in the best-of-seven, first-round Eastern Conference series.

Sebastian Aho scored two empty-net goals, and Taylor Hall had a goal and an assist for Carolina. Seth Jarvis had two assists and Frederik Andersen made 25 saves.

For the Senators, Drake Batherson had a goal and an assist, and Dylan Cozens scored. Linus Ullmark stopped 26 shots.

“It’s heartbreaking,” said Senators captain Brady Tkachuk, on being eliminated Saturday. “Really tight series. Give them credit; they’re a great team. They play hard, don’t give you much.”

Stankoven’s power-play goal 9:10 into the third period gave the Hurricanes a 2-1 lead. He put the carom off the back boards into the open side of the net for his fourth goal of the series.

‘The guy’s a gamer,” Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal said of Stankoven. “He competes so hard. I just tell him ‘Get to the net.’ ”

Aho’s first empty-netter came with 2:22 left. Cozens made it 3-2 with Ullmark pulled and 1:49 remaining. Aho got his second empty-netter with 1:15 left.

Batherson’s power-play goal had tied it 1-1 with 2:52 left in the second period. He redirected Tim Stutzle’s shot for Batherson’s third goal of the series. That came after Hall had given Carolina a 1-0 lead on a shot from the inside edge of the left circle off the rush with 4:45 remaining in the period.

The second period featured several scrums. The first came 4:30 into the middle period after a clean check by Ottawa defenseman Tyler Kleven along the boards left Hurricanes defenseman Alexander Nikishin dazed and on the ice. He was woozy as he was helped off the ice.

Kleven was not penalized for the hit.

Ottawa was without defenseman Jake Sanderson due to a concussion suffered in Game 3 when he was hit in the head by Hall, who received a minor penalty on the play. Sanderson’s usual partner on the top defensive duo, Artem Zub, has been out since leaving Game 1 with an undisclosed injury.

Hurricanes forward Nikolaj Ehlers did not play because of a lower-body injury.

Microsoft Slashes Xbox Game Pass Prices as ‘Call of Duty’ Delays Subscription Launch by One Year CWEB

0

Microsoft is cutting Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass prices after a controversial 50% hike just months ago.Future “Call of Duty” titles will no longer arrive on Game Pass on launch day, instead landing roughly one year after retail release.

The price reversal comes amid a broader industry trend of rising hardware and software costs from Sony and Nintendo.

In a striking strategic pivot, Microsoft has announced a price reduction for its Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscriptions, walking back a steep October increase that had sparked widespread player backlash. The move is paired with a major change to how its flagship “Call of Duty” franchise integrates with the service. Moving forward, new installments in the blockbuster series will not be available on Game Pass the same day they launch in stores. Instead, subscribers will need to wait approximately one year after a title’s commercial release to access it through the platform. Importantly, previously released “Call of Duty” games will remain unaffected by this delayed-access policy.

The subscription price cut marks a notable reversal from late last year, when Microsoft raised Game Pass Ultimate from $19.99 to $29.99 per month, a dramatic 50 percent jumpand PC Game Pass from $11.99 to $16.49. That decision had drawn sharp criticism from the gaming community, which now sees the company responding with a rare discounting strategy. While Microsoft has not disclosed the new pricing in exact figures, the move signals an effort to retain subscribers amid shifting content value and rising competition.

Microsoft’s price adjustment stands in stark contrast to recent moves by rivals. Earlier this month, Sony increased the price of its PlayStation 5 console, now more than five years old, by $100. Microsoft itself had previously raised the cost of its Xbox Series X system, and Nintendo increased the price of its original Switch model, although it held the line on the newly launched Switch 2. Beyond hardware, game pricing is also escalating. Nintendo has adopted a variable pricing model, charging $70 for some titles while pricing “Mario Kart World” at $80. The company further varies costs based on whether a consumer buys a physical copy or a downloadable version, underscoring a broader industry shift toward tiered and delayed-access strategies.

Apple Partners with Amazon’s Satellite Network for iPhone and Watch from Earlier Starlink Rejection

0
(Image/Apple)

Apple has chosen Amazon’s Project Leo as its primary satellite connectivity provider for iPhones and Apple Watches, marking a major shift years after passing on an offer from SpaceX’s Starlink. Amazon is acquiring Globalstar for an estimated $11.6 billion to accelerate its entry into the Direct-to-Device (D2D) market, where satellites beam service directly to standard mobile phones. The new agreements position Amazon’s Leo network as a serious rival to Starlink, with Apple now anchoring its satellite messaging features to Amazon’s infrastructure.

In a strategic pivot that reshapes the competitive landscape of space-based mobile connectivity, Apple has bypassed SpaceX’s Starlink and instead aligned with Amazon’s growing satellite operation. The decision, confirmed by Amazon on Tuesday, follows years of speculation about Apple’s satellite ambitions after it previously declined a proposal from Elon Musk’s Starlink network. Now, Amazon will serve as the primary satellite service provider for current and future iPhone and Apple Watch features, according to Panos Panay, Amazon’s senior vice president of devices and services.

To solidify its position, Amazon has signed a merger agreement to acquire Globalstar, the satellite operator that had already been powering Apple’s emergency SOS messaging features. The $11.6 billion deal not only gives Amazon control of existing infrastructure but also fast-tracks its ability to compete in the Direct-to-Device (D2D) sector, a fast-emerging arena where satellites connect directly to unmodified smartphones. Amazon said the acquisition will help its Leo network—formerly known as Kuiper Systems—scale up rapidly against Starlink’s market lead.

The dual announcements mark a major turning point for Amazon, which has struggled to gain traction in the satellite internet race. By locking in Apple as a marquee customer and absorbing Globalstar’s operational assets, Amazon is signaling a more aggressive push into mobile satellite services. The Apple deal, described by Amazon as a separate agreement in addition to the Globalstar acquisition, ensures that millions of iPhone and Apple Watch users will rely on Amazon’s satellites for connectivity features like off-grid messaging and emergency alerts.

Analysts see the move as a direct challenge to Starlink’s dominance in the low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite market, particularly as Direct-to-Device services become the next battleground for tech giants. With Apple now backing Amazon’s Leo network, the rivalry between Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk extends further into consumer mobile technology. Amazon has not disclosed the financial terms of its agreement with Apple, but the multiyear partnership is expected to cover future iPhone and Watch models, potentially including new satellite-based data and voice features.

Former President George W. Bush Engages in Backstage Badinage, Hinting at an Unlikely Broadcasting Alliance – CWEB Celebrity News

0
Courtesy George W Bush Presidential Library Portrait 06/04/2025 Copyright: © Paul Morse 2013

At a recent edition of History Talks, former President George W. Bush, accompanied by his daughter, Jenna Bush Hager, offered a charming, albeit whimsical, glimpse into a potential new chapter, suggesting a broadcasting partnership with Miss Hager’s erstwhile co-host, Hoda Kotb. Whilst the former President, a gentleman of demonstrable creative flair in both the literary and pictorial arts, is no stranger to appearing on programmes hosted by his daughter, this marked the first occasion on which he has, with a twinkle in his eye, proposed a co-hosting venture with Miss Kotb. The digital demimonde, predictably, was enthralled.

The delightful interlude occurred backstage, where the 43rd President, upon espying Miss Kotb, greeted her with evident warmth and an affectionate, “Hodes! Look at you!”

“Doesn’t she look splendid?” Miss Bush Hager enquired of her father. The former President, in ready agreement, replied, “She does look great,” before enfolding her in a fond embrace. As the two shared this moment, Miss Bush Hager, with filial wit, introduced them as “my two dads.”

It was then that former President George W. Bush, long celebrated for a puckish sense of humour that often graced his tenure in the Oval Office, delivered his coup de grâce. “Hoda and I are gonna do a show together,” he declared, christening the putative enterprise “Hoda & George” with a flourish. Miss Kotb, who shares a profound professional and personal bond with Miss Bush Hager from their celebrated tenure on Today with Hoda & Jenna, was visibly charmed. Theirs is an alliance that has endured beyond the studio, with Miss Kotb having frequently and generously stepped into the breach whenever a co-host was required.

Jenna Bush Hager Celebrates Emmy Nomination with Hoda Kotb in Heartfelt Post. Credit Jenna Bush Instagram 07/11/2025

Miss Bush Hager has been engaged in the rather august pursuit of interviewing former Presidents of the United States for a History Channel event. The conversation with her father, former President George W. Bush, took place in Philadelphia for the History Talks programme. This distinguished series has also seen the former First Daughter in reasoned discourse with President Bill Clinton, President Barack Obama, and President Joe Biden, assembling a quartet of living commanders-in-chief in anticipation of the forthcoming 250th anniversary of the American Republic this July. The scholarly endeavour was realised in partnership with Comcast, the parent institution of NBCUniversal.

Should this fanciful notion ever transcend mere badinage and manifest as a genuine talk show starring former President George W. Bush and Miss Kotb, it would indubitably be a source of great delight for a vast online following. One can well imagine the public would extend an equally warm reception to Miss Bush Hager, whether in the role of distinguished guest or, indeed, as a fellow co-host alongside the 43rd President in this most charmingly improbable of triumvirates.

PGA News: Trump Turnberry passed over for ’28 Open Championship

0

The 2028 Open Championship was awarded to England’s Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club on Monday.

The official announcement from the R&A means Scotland’s Trump Turnberry must wait until at least 2029 to host the Open.

“Turnberry is still in our thinking,” R&A CEO Mark Darbon said Monday at Royal Birkdale Golf Club during media day for this year’s Open Championship in July.

Turnberry last hosted the Open in 2009, five years before the Trump Organization — parent company of U.S. President Donald Trump’s real estate portfolio — purchased the property for $60 million.

Turnberry, which also hosted the major championship in 1977, 1986 and 1994, has undergone a reported $200 million in renovations and upgrades since joining the Trump umbrella, according to Front Office Sports. Trump’s sons, Donald Jr. and Eric, have been in charge of the day-to-day operations of the Trump Organization since 2017.

Attendance at the 2009 Open at Turnberry was an estimated 123,000 fans, far below the 200,000-plus common at many of the other venues in rotation.

“We really like the golf course,” Darbon said Monday. “We know that there are some logistical challenges that relate to staging a modern Open Championship there primarily off the course–road, rail, and accommodation infrastructure. We’ve got a really good dialogue with the club and its ownership, pretty transparent discussion there.”

Stewart Cink defeated 59-year-old Tom Watson in a four-hole playoff to win the Open at Turnberry in 2009.

Royal Lytham & St Annes has hosted the Open Championship 11 times since 1926, most recently in 2012 when South Africa’s Ernie Els defeated Adam Scott by one stroke.
