MLB News: Padres rally in ninth to take series from Diamondbacks

Ryan O’Hearn tied the game with a leadoff homer in the ninth inning, Jose Iglesias singled in the go-ahead run, and the San Diego Padres beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 in the decisive game of a three-game series on Wednesday in Phoenix.

O’Hearn went deep off Kyle Backhus (0-2), his first homer since being acquired by San Diego at the trade deadline. Xander Bogaerts then doubled and was sacrificed to third before scoring on Iglesias’ line-drive single to right.

Corbin Carroll hit a 443-foot homer in the first inning and Alek Thomas added a sacrifice fly in the second to give Arizona a 2-0 lead, but the Diamondbacks had one hit after Tyler Locklear’s single in the second.

Padres reliever Adrian Morejon (9-4) gave up one hit in two scoreless innings. Mason Miller struck out three in the ninth while working around a two-out walk for his 21st save, his first since joining San Diego in a deadline deal.

Freddy Fermin had three hits for the Padres, who have won nine of 11.

Bogaerts homered in the seventh to slice Arizona’s lead to 2-1. He went deep for the second consecutive game and has hit six of his nine homers since June 19.

The Diamondbacks have lost two in a row and eight of 11.

Arizona starter Anthony DeSclafani gave up three hits in 4 1/3 scoreless innings during his third start of the season. He struck out four, issued no walks and was removed with a 2-0 lead.

Nestor Cortes gave up two runs on three hits in 4 2/3 innings in his first start for the Padres after being obtained at the deadline. He walked three and struck out three.

Carroll hit an 0-2 pitch for his 23rd homer for a 1-0 lead as the second batter in the first inning.

The D-backs loaded the bases with no outs in the second when Locklear beat out an infield single before Cortes hit Blaze Alexander and James McCann with inside pitches. However, Arizona scored only on Thomas’ sacrifice fly.

After going 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position in a 10-5, 11-inning loss Tuesday, the D-backs were 0-for-4 in those situations on Wednesday.

MLB News: Majors-best Brewers sweep Braves, complete 6-0 trip

Andrew Vaughn and Blake Perkins hit home runs to support the solid effort of starter Jose Quintana and help the visiting Milwaukee Brewers beat the Atlanta Braves 5-4 on Wednesday, completing a three-game sweep.

The Brewers, who own the best record in the major leagues (70-44), have won six in a row overall and 12 of their past 13 road games. They capped a 6-0 road trip by sweeping a set in Atlanta for the second straight season.

The Braves have lost 11 of its past 14 and dropped to a season-worst 19 games below .500.

The Brewers recorded 14 hits as Vaughn went 2-for-4 with a solo homer while Perkins finished 3-for-5 with a two-run shot. Isaac Collins went 3-for-4 and hit .500 (10-for-20) on the road trip.

Quintana (9-4) pitched six innings and allowed three runs on seven hits and no walks. He registered a season-high seven strikeouts.

Jared Koenig and Abner Uribe each followed with a scoreless inning. Milwaukee closer Trevor Megill surrendered a two-out homer to Michael Harris II in the ninth before fanning pinch hitter Drake Baldwin to earn his 26th save.

Atlanta starter Spencer Strider (5-9) worked only 4 2/3 innings — his shortest start since May 27 — and allowed five runs on 11 hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

The Braves strung together three consecutive hits in the first inning, including an RBI single from Sean Murphy.

The Brewers tied the game in the second with back-to-back two-out doubles by Perkins and Brice Turang. Milwaukee took the lead in the fourth on Vaughn’s solo homer, his 12th, which extended his hitting streak to 12 games — the longest active run in the majors.

Milwaukee upped the lead to 5-1 in the fifth on Vaughn’s RBI grounder and a two-run homer from Perkins, his third, that knocked Strider out of the game.

The Braves got a run back in the fifth on Eli White’s RBI grounder, and Atlanta’s Jurickson Profar socked a solo homer in the sixth, his fifth.

MLB News: Jonathan India’s HR, Michael Wacha’s gem propel Royals past Red Sox

The visiting Kansas City Royals put up a pair of crooked numbers as they overcame an early two-run deficit and beat the Boston Red Sox 7-3 on Wednesday night in the finale of a three-game series.

Jonathan India hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning and had two hits and two runs to pace the Royals offense. Kyle Isbel drove in two, while Massachusetts native Mike Yastrzemski, Adam Frazier and John Rave also had multiple hits.

Scoring in four of the final seven frames allowed Kansas City to cruise, as it largely stymied the Red Sox bats after Romy Gonzalez’s two-out, two-run double off the Green Monster in the first.

Michael Wacha (6-9) threw six solid innings of two-run ball to earn a victory against his former team, allowing just two of his five hits after the opening frame.

Gonzalez (two doubles, two RBIs) and Trevor Story (RBI, run scored) paced Boston, which saw its seven-game win streak come to an end.

Back-to-back hits in the third inning got Kansas City on the board against Dustin May (6-8), who was making his Red Sox debut after being traded there at the trade deadline. Yastrzemski lined a leadoff ground-rule double inside the right-field line and scored on Bobby Witt Jr.’s RBI single up the middle.

India and Rave started the Royals’ go-ahead fourth inning with back-to-back singles with one out before Isbel’s two-run liner into center field made it 3-2.

After replacing May (3 2/3 innings), Chris Murphy stranded two on base to keep the deficit at one run, but India delivered the biggest swing of the night with a three-run shot off Jordan Hicks just over the ledge on top of the Monster in the seventh.

Red Sox pitchers hit a franchise-record five batters.

After May worked out of a jam in the first inning of his Red Sox debut, Gonzalez’s two-run knock made it an early 2-0 game.

Yastrzemski took a potential home run away from newly extended Red Sox rookie Roman Anthony, making a catch against the wall in the right-field corner to end the fifth.

After the first, the Red Sox were held scoreless until Connor Wong scored on Trevor Story’s two-out single to center in the eighth.

MLB News: Nationals end 6-game skid with walk-off win over A’s

CJ Abrams hit a walk-off single in the ninth inning as the Washington Nationals ended a six-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over the visiting Athletics on Wednesday night.

Robert Hassell III led off the inning against Michael Kelly (2-1) with a fly ball down the right field line. Colby Thomas made a diving effort and got his glove on it but couldn’t make the catch as Hassell ended the play with a double.

After Jacob Young struck out attempting to sacrifice, Abrams fell behind in the count 1-2 before lacing a single to left. The throw from Tyler Soderstrom was off line, and Hassell slid in with the winning run.

Riley Adams homered for the Nationals, who had allowed 70 runs while losing their previous six games.

Jose A. Ferrer (3-3) pitched a scoreless top of the ninth for the win.

Soderstrom homered for the Athletics, who lost for the third time in four games.

A’s starter Jeffrey Springs was perfect through five innings. He wound up allowing one run on one hit over six innings, striking out five without issuing a walk.

Washington’s Cade Cavalli, making his first major league appearance since his debut in August 2022, allowed three hits over 4 1/3 scoreless innings. The 26-year-old right-hander, in his return from Tommy John surgery, struck out six and walked one.

Shea Langeliers singled to give the A’s runners on first and third with two out in the third, but Cavalli struck out Nick Kurtz.

In the fourth, a throwing error by shortstop Abrams again gave the Athletics first and third with two outs, but Cavalli got Lawrence Butler to ground out.

Soderstrom hit the first pitch from Konnor Pilkington in the sixth inning for a homer to right-center, giving the A’s a 1-0 lead.

Adams broke up Springs’ perfect game when he led off the sixth with a home run down the left field line to make it 1-1.

MLB News: A’s reliever Jose Leclerc (shoulder) undergoes surgery

Athletics right-hander Jose Leclerc underwent surgery on his pitching shoulder Wednesday, according to the team.

Dr. Keith Meister performed the surgery in Arlington, Texas, after Leclerc was shut down for the season on July 25. He was on the injured list since late April.

Leclerc, 31, went 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA in 10 relief appearances for the Athletics this season. He struck out eight batters over nine innings after signing a one-year, $10 million contract in January.

Overall, Leclerc is 12-21 with a 3.34 ERA and 41 saves in 360 career appearances (three starts) with the Texas Rangers (2016-24) and Athletics.

The A’s also recalled Tyler Ferguson from Triple-A Las Vegas and optioned fellow right-hander Eduarniel Nunez to the same affiliate.

Ferguson, 31, is 2-2 with a 6.69 ERA in 36 games this season. He has a 4.90 ERA in 84 career relief appearances for the A’s over the past two seasons.

Nunez, 26, had a 19.29 ERA in two appearances since being acquired in a trade with the San Diego Padres at the trading deadline. He had a 3.86 ERA in four appearances with the Padres before the trade.

MLB News: Marlins hold off late Astros rally to avoid sweep

Xavier Edwards connected on four hits and Heriberto Hernandez homered and drove in two runs as the host Miami Marlins defeated the Houston Astros 6-4 on Wednesday.

Houston, which failed to secure what would’ve been a three-game sweep, were led by Christian Walker, who slugged a two-run homer.

Miami, meanwhile, produced 14 hits, stole four bases, made no errors and had several fielding gems. Perhaps the biggest play came with the bases loaded in the eighth inning when reliever Calvin Faucher made a backhand stab of a slow roller and threw out Walker on a close call at the plate.

Janson Junk (6-2) earned the win, going five innings and allowing three runs on five hits and two walks. Lake Bachar pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his second career save.

Spencer Arrighetti (1-2) took the loss, allowing 11 hits, one walk and five runs in 3 2/3 innings. It was his first appearance since April 5.

Houston took a 2-0 lead in the first as former Marlin Jesus Sanchez doubled and scored on Walker’s 417-foot bomb to left-center, which had a 113-mph exit velocity.

Miami grabbed a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the first, putting together a rally that included six singles. Liam Hicks, Otto Lopez and Hernandez tallied RBIs.

The Marlins extended their lead to 4-2 in the second as Edwards doubled, advanced on Kyle Stowers’ single and scored on Agustin Ramirez’s sacrifice fly.

Miami made it 5-2 in the third on Hernandez’s homer, which went 391 feet and was just beyond the reach of Sanchez in left field.

Houston cut its deficit to 5-3 in the fifth as Mauricio Dubon and Carlos Correa smashed two-out doubles. Sanchez nearly got Houston another run, but his 106-mph grounder was fielded on a slick play by Edwards at second.

Graham Pauley led off the bottom of the fifth with a homer, extending Miami’s lead to 6-3.

Houston kept coming in the sixth as Walker singled and scored on Victor Caratini’s double. That made it 6-4.

Then came Houston’s base-loaded rally in the eighth. After Faucher threw Walker out at the plate, Houston nearly tied the score on Dubon’s blooper into short right field. However, Edwards chased it down for another stellar Marlins defensive play.

MLB News: Junior Caminero homers twice to lift Rays over Angels

Christopher Morel hit a go-ahead home run to lead off the seventh inning and Junior Caminero homered twice as the visiting Tampa Bay Rays spoiled another record-setting day by Mike Trout with a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday afternoon in Anaheim, Calif.

Nick Fortes also homered, Jonny DeLuca tripled and Brandon Lowe had two hits for Tampa Bay, which claimed its second series win since the All-Star break.

Garrett Cleavinger (1-4) picked up the win with a scoreless inning of relief and Pete Fairbanks pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to record his 19th save.

Trout hit a three-run homer, the 398th of his career, moving him into a tie with Dale Murphy for 61st place on the all-time home run list. It was Trout’s 200th career homer at Anaheim Stadium, putting him in the record books as the first player in major league history to compile 100 stolen bases and 200 home runs in the same stadium.

Trout and Luis Rengifo both went 2-for-4 with a run scored for Los Angeles.

Ryan Zeferjahn (6-4) suffered the loss for the Angels, who finished a 13-game homestand with just a 6-7 record. Starter Tyler Anderson left after allowing four runs, including three home runs, on five hits in four innings to extend his team record to 19 straight starts without a victory.

Tampa Bay took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run homer by Caminero, a 447-foot drive to left-center, driving in Chandler Simpson, who had singled.

Fortes made it 3-0 in the second inning with his third home run. Caminero then extended the lead to 4-0 in the third with his 30th home run of the season and second of the game, a 404-foot drive to center.

Los Angeles tied the game 4-4 in the bottom of the third on Trout’s 20th homer, a 433-foot three-run drive into the bullpen in left. It followed an RBI single by Nolan Schanuel.

Morel, who had struck out in his six previous at-bats in the series, put the Rays back ahead, 5-4, in the seventh when he hit Zeferjahn’s first pitch into the seats down the left field line for his eighth home run.

The Angels loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth against reliever Griffin Jax on an infield single by Trout, a walk by Taylor Ward, and catcher interference to put Jo Adell on base. But Jax rebounded with consecutive strikeouts of Logan O’Hoppe, Rengifo and Christian Moore to end the threat.

MLB News: Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani reaches 1,000 career hits with HR

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani hit a milestone moment in his major league career on Wednesday afternoon, clubbing a 440-foot, two-run home run to center field during a 5-3 loss to the visiting St. Louis Cardinals.

The hit was Ohtani’s 1,000th hit of his eight-season big-league career and his 39th homer of the season.

Ohtani, whose blast pushed Los Angeles to a 2-1 advantage, joined Ichiro Suzuki (3,089) and Hideki Matsui (1,253) as the only Japanese-born players to reach 1,000 hits in MLB action.

The two-way star, three-time MVP and five-time All-Star also became the fourth active Dodgers with 1,000 hits alongside Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts and Teoscar Hernandez.

Ohtani also started on the mound for Los Angeles on Wednesday, allowing one run on two hits while striking out a season-high eight across four innings of work. He was 1-for-3 with a strikeout and walk at the plate in addition to the two-run homer.

Ohtani is in his second season with the Dodgers after playing six years with the Los Angeles Angels. He won two of his three MVP awards with the Angels.

MLB News: Padres release Martin Maldonado, outright Tyler Wade to Triple-A

The San Diego Padres released catcher Martin Maldonado and outrighted utility player Tyler Wade to Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday.

San Diego designated both players for assignment last week after a trading deadline frenzy during which the club acquired six major leaguers while dealing mostly prospects.

One of the acquisitions was catcher Freddy Fermin from the Kansas City Royals. That acquisition led to the departure of the light-hitting Maldonado.

A strong defensive catcher who won a Gold Glove with the Los Angeles Angels in 2017, the 38-year-old Maldonado was batting just .204 with four homers and 12 RBIs in 64 games for San Diego this season.

Maldonado has a .203 career average with 119 homers and 384 RBIs in 1,230 career games over 15 seasons with seven teams. He played his first six seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers (2011-16) and had two stints totaling five-plus seasons with the Houston Astros (2018, 2019-23).

Wade, 30, was batting .206 with nine RBIs in 59 games for the Padres this season. He has a .216 career mark with seven homers and 60 RBIs in 506 games over nine seasons with the New York Yankees (2017-21), Los Angeles Angels (2022), then-Oakland Athletics (2023) and Padres.

MLB News: Cardinals edge Dodgers as Ohtani notches 1,000th career hit

Jordan Walker had a game-tying single in the eighth inning and Masyn Winn scored the go-ahead run on an error as the visiting St. Louis Cardinals rallied for a 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday afternoon.

Brendan Donovan and Lars Nootbaar also brought runs home without getting the ball out of the infield as the Cardinals secured a 4-2 record against the Dodgers this season while winning a pair of series.

Three St. Louis relievers held Los Angeles without a run over the final five innings, while right-hander Riley O’Brien pitched 1 1/3 innings for his first career save. JoJo Romero (4-3) did not allow any runs over one inning of work to earn the win.

Dodgers two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani hit a home run for his 1,000th career hit and struck out eight over a four-inning start as the Dodgers dropped to 3-6 at home since the All-Star break. Freddie Freeman had three hits for Los Angeles, while Alex Call had two in his first home start since his trade from the Washington Nationals.

Ohtani gave up one run on two hits with no walks on a day when all fans in attendance received a full-size replica of his World Series championship ring.

The Cardinals pulled ahead for good in the eighth. With two runners aboard and two outs, Walker singled to center against Alex Vesia (2-1) to tie the game at 3-3. The throw back to the infield went to third and then to second as Walker tried to advance. Winn scored on a throwing error by Dodgers rookie third baseman Alex Freeland.

The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a two-out RBI bunt single from Brendan Donovan. The Dodgers moved in front 2-1 in their half of the third on a two-run home run from Ohtani, his 39th of the season.

The Dodgers opened a 3-1 lead when Andy Pages singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, stole third and came around to score on a throwing error by Cardinals catcher Pedro Pages. St. Louis got the run back in the sixth on a Lars Nootbaar groundout.

After taking the lead in the eighth inning following the single from Walker against Vesia, the Cardinals added one more run in the ninth on a Nootbaar RBI double.
