NFL News: Report: ESPN punts Shannon Sharpe after lawsuit settlement

ESPN parted ways with Pro Football Hall of Fame member and media personality Shannon Sharpe, according to multiple reports Wednesday.

Sharpe was last with the network in April when a former girlfriend accused Sharpe of sexual assault and filed a $50 million lawsuit.

The ESPN move comes after the woman’s attorney, Tony Buzbee, announced an out-of-court settlement on July 18 without divulging any financial figures while acknowledging a “long-term consensual and tumultuous relationship” between his client and Sharpe, 57.

Sharpe began appearing on ESPN’s “First Take” in September 2023. He signed a multi-year contract extension with the company last summer. When he stepped away in April, he called the move temporary and made it clear he intended to return to a role in national sports media.

A different allegation about Sharpe emerged in April. Front Office Sports reported he was accused of choking a female production assistant while working for Fox as the co-host of FS1’s “Undisputed.”

Per the report, Sharpe was not sued in the case, and he and Fox settled with the woman for several hundred thousand dollars. Sharpe’s camp denied that the choking incident happened.

Sharpe played 14 NFL seasons with the Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens, winning three Super Bowl titles.

NFL News: Bills CB Maxwell Hairston to miss time with knee sprain

Bills rookie cornerback Maxwell Hairston dodged an injury scare but is expected to miss time with a sprained knee ligament.

Hairston, the 30th overall pick in the 2025 draft, did not finish Tuesday’s practice after being taken to the locker room with a knee injury. According to multiple reports, tests taken Tuesday revealed Hairston avoided a major injury and his ACL was found to be fully intact.

Hairston is competing for a significant role in the Buffalo secondary. He was the fastest player at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine in the 40-yard dash (4.28 seconds) and general manager Brandon Beane said on draft night the Bills coveted Hairston because he gives the secondary “something we don’t have.”

NFL Network reported Hairston’s injury is a sprained lateral collateral ligament. Typical recovery time for a Grade 1 (mild) LCL sprain is 1 to 3 weeks.

NFL News: Browns CB Martin Emerson Jr. tears Achilles, out for season

Cleveland Browns cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. will undergo surgery to repair a torn left Achilles and miss the 2025 season.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed the news Wednesday. Emerson suffered the non-contact injury in practice during a 7-on-7 drill on Tuesday and was carted off the field.

“Disappointed, obviously, injuries are the worst part about our game. But he will bounce back. I know what he is made of, and he’s got our support and his teammate’s support,” Stefanski said, according to the team’s website. “MJ is a big part of this football team, whether he is out on the field or not, he is a big part of this football team.”

Emerson, 24, recorded 80 tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in 17 games (15 starts) last season.

He has totaled 202 tackles and four interceptions in 50 career games (33 starts) since being selected by Cleveland in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He is entering the final season of his four-year rookie deal.

Stefanski said he has spoken with Emerson.

“He’s hurting,” Stefanski said. “These guys put so much into this game — physically, mentally, emotionally — and I don’t want to see any of our players ever in that position. It’s tough to see. Having said that, I know what this kid is made of. Yesterday was a lot, and he’s sore today and it’s going to be tough.”

NFL News: Seahawks GM John Schneider signs through 2030

Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider agreed to a four-year contract extension through the 2030 draft.

Schneider, 54. enters his second season with head coach Mike Macdonald and would hit the 20-year mark as the primary personnel boss in Seattle if he completes the new contract.

“The extension of general manager John Schneider’s contract is a testament to his 15-plus years of football leadership and success,” team owner Jody Allen said in a statement Wednesday. “I am confident that John will continue to deliver real results and a continued strong partnership with head coach Mike Macdonald that is already contributing to our winning culture on and off the field.”

Hired in 2010 out of the Green Bay Packers organization, where he was a protege of Ron Wolf and Ted Thompson, Schneider is attempting to rebuild the Seahawks into a perennial contender. The team has 10 playoff appearances and played in two Super Bowls — one win, one loss — during Schneider’s tenure. Only one of those four postseason appearances has come in the past four seasons, however.

Among current NFL general managers, only Mickey Loomis (New Orleans Saints GM since 2002) and Mike Brown (Cincinnati Bengals president and GM since 1991) have a longer active tenure. The list doesn’t include Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who still calls the shots for the organization he purchased in 1989.

Schneider was hired in January 2010, 10 days before the Eagles promoted 34-year-old Howie Roseman to the same role, and teamed with Pete Carroll to build a dynastic roster centered around value draft picks and other shrewd moves.

The Seahawks drafted quarterback Russell Wilson in the third round (2012), acquired running back Marshawn Lynch via trade (2010), signed defensive end Michael Bennett as a free agent (2013) and scored on a series of defensive prospects in the draft, including cornerback Richard Sherman (154th overall in 2011), safety Kam Chancellor (133rd overall, 2010) and linebacker Bobby Wagner (47th overall, 2012).

When Carroll was fired and replaced by Macdonald in 2023, Schneider added the title of president of football operations.

In his second year with Macdonald, formerly defensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens, Schneider overturned much of the roster. Seattle signed Sam Darnold, traded incumbent starting quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders, dealt wideout DK Metcalf to the Pittsburgh Steelers and rolled the dice with two injury-prone veterans: former Los Angeles Rams All-Pro wide receiver Cooper Kupp and longtime Cowboys pass rusher DeMarcus Lawrence.

NFL News: Chiefs sign help as WR Xavier Worthy enters concussion protocol

Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy is in concussion protocol and injuries are piling up at the position for Kansas City.

Worthy banged his head on the ground in Tuesday’s training camp practice. He was competing for a deep pass and landed hard on the turf.

In addition to Worthy, the Chiefs were on the field Wednesday without Skyy Moore (hamstring) and Hollywood Brown (ankle) due to injuries.

Kansas City signed Kwamie Lassiter II to bolster the depth chart. Lassiter most recently played in the UFL with the Memphis Showboats. Undrafted out of Kansas, Lassiter II spent time with the Bengals during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. His dad played safety in the NFL and had 25 career interceptions in 129 total games with the Arizona Cardinals (1995-2002), Chargers (2003) and Rams (2004).

Worthy will have to clear the protocol before returning to training camp. The Chiefs open the preseason at Arizona on Aug. 9 and kick off the regular season against the visiting Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 5.

Worthy, 22, had 59 catches for 638 yards and six touchdowns and also rushed for three TDs in 17 games (13 starts) last season after being selected with the 28th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

The rookie added three touchdown receptions in the playoffs, including two in the second half of the Chiefs’ 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans.

Lynx top Liberty in matchup between top two teams in WNBA standings

Napheesa Collier scored 30 points on 11-for-16 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds, and the Minnesota Lynx pulled away for a 100-93 win over the New York Liberty on Wednesday night in Minneapolis.

Kayla McBride added 24 points for Minnesota (23-5), which beat the Liberty in the teams’ first matchup since they squared off in the 2024 WNBA Finals. Alanna Smith scored 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting and grabbed five rebounds.

Sabrina Ionescu scored 31 points on 11-for-20 shooting to lead New York (17-9). Isabelle Harrison had 15 points off the bench, and Natasha Cloud finished with 12 points to go along with a team-high seven assists.

Minnesota shot 49.3 percent (36 of 73) from the field and 48.4 percent (15 of 31) from beyond the 3-point line. New York shot 48.6 percent (35 of 72) overall and 35.7 percent (10 of 28) from long range.

The Liberty trailed 68-62 at the end of the third quarter.

New York trailed by 13 points with 1:47 remaining but closed the third quarter on a 7-0 lead thanks to a driving layup by Harrison, a 3-pointer by Ionescu and a basket by Leonie Fiebich to trim the deficit to six.

The score was even at 24-all at the end of the first quarter, but the Lynx led 51-42 at the half.

Ionescu made a pull-up jump shot to put New York on top 22-15 with 3:44 remaining in the first quarter, but the Lynx finished the first quarter on a 7-2 run to even the score. Jessica Shepard made a basket and a driving layup, and McBride finished the outburst with a 3-pointer.

In the second quarter, the Lynx outscored the Liberty 27-18 to establish a nine-point advantage at the break. Minnesota finished the first half on a 9-2 run. Collier scored the final seven points on back-to-back layups and a 3-pointer.

Naz Hillmon’s late triple lifts Dream past Wings

Naz Hillmon knocked down a 3-pointer with 2.6 seconds left to propel the Atlanta Dream to an 88-85 victory over the Dallas Wings on Wednesday in Arlington, Texas.

Hillmon led Atlanta (16-11) with 21 points, while Allisha Gray added 15 points and Brionna Jones scored 14. Maya Caldwell had a season-high 13 points, while Te-Hina Paopao collected 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists for the Dream, who have won three of four.

Rookie star Paige Bueckers led Dallas (8-20) with 21 points, followed by Luisa Geiselsoder’s 13. Arike Ogunbowale and Haley Jones chipped in 12 points apiece for the Wings, who have lost seven of their last nine.

Atlanta trailed by two entering the final quarter but began the period on a 12-2 run, including a pair of Hillmon triples to take a 74-66 lead with 7:26 remaining.

Dallas then held the Dream scoreless for more than three minutes with an 8-0 spurt, capped with Bueckers’ three-point play.

Paopao’s consecutive layups later gave Atlanta an 85-83 edge with 34.8 seconds remaining before Ogunbowale’s jumper tied the score with 21.6 seconds left.

Trailing by four at halftime, Dallas began the third quarter with a 7-2 spurt to grab a one-point lead less than two minutes into the second half. Brionna Jones then scored four in a row and Hillmon connected on a pair of free throws to help Atlanta take a 52-47 advantage.

After the Dream’s lead was pushed to seven, Myisha Hines-Allen’s 3-pointer and Li Yueru’s mid-range jumper began a 13-2 Dallas’ run, giving the Wings a 64-60 edge with just over a minute left in the third.

Brionna Jones’ layup stopped the bleeding for Atlanta, cutting the deficit to 64-62 entering the fourth.

After Atlanta took a 26-21 lead into the second quarter, Dallas went on an 8-3 run — including Bueckers and Haley Jones’ 3-pointers to pull even at 29 with 4:42 left in the first half.

With less than a minute left in the second quarter, Bueckers’ mid-range jumper knotted the score at 40, before Brittney Griner’s layup and Caldwell’s basket gave the Dream a four-point edge at the break. Gray led all scorers with 13 first-half points, while Bueckers paced Dallas with 10.

PGA News: Rickie Fowler climbing FedExCup points list, but he seeks more

0

While professional golf’s four majors have come and gone, there’s still lots of money and prestige to be earned over the next month.

The PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship, which begins Thursday at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., is the final tournament before the $100 million FedExCup Playoffs. That means it’s the final chance for golfers to collect FedExCup points and claim one of the 70 invites to next week’s $20 million FedEx St. Jude Championship.

Rickie Fowler enters Thursday’s play ranked No. 52 on the points list, so he’s guaranteed a chance to play in Memphis. But only the top 50 players earn a shot to play the following week in the BMW Championship, and only the top 30 get to compete for $60 million at the Tour Championship.

So there’s plenty of motivation to excel at Sedgefield.

“Yeah, I definitely believe there’s some good golf coming up (for me) and it wouldn’t be a bad thing if it happened to be in the next few weeks,” Fowler said Wednesday.

The 36-year-old Fowler has been steadily climbing the points list since he shared 15th place at the Truist Classic in mid-May. He shared 16th place at the Charles Schwab Challenge, tied for seventh at the Memorial, split 18th at the John Deere and snagged a share of 14th at the Open Championship with a final-round 65.

What does the California native credit for his recent surge? As happens with so many athletes, he hasn’t been bothered as much by injuries of late.

“Just working on getting the body feeling better,” he said. “(I’ve) struggled with a few things. Yeah, just been in a better spot and been able to go out and play as much pain-free as we can. But that’s probably been one of the biggest thing(s), just allow myself to go play.

“Definitely nice to see some trending in the right direction, some good solid finishes. Yeah, looking forward to hopefully putting together a good little run and finish up the season.”

Fowler finished 101st in last year’s FedExCup points standings and did not get to play in either the Masters or the U.S. Open this year, so getting back into the top 70 is a notable achievement.

But finishing among the top 50 would be that much more impressive because, in addition to the current FedExCup opportunities, it would unlock invitations to all eight signature events next year. Each event featured a $20 million purse this year.

Aliyah Boston takes over in 4th to lead Fever past Mercury

Aliyah Boston notched 17 of her 22 points in the fourth quarter and Aari McDonald scored a career-high 27 as the Indiana Fever won 107-101 over the visiting Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday night in Indianapolis to grab their third straight victory.

Playing without fellow star teammate Caitlin Clark (groin injury) for a fifth consecutive game, Boston, who also recorded 12 rebounds for a career-high fourth consecutive double-double, was a non-offensive factor through the first three quarters for the Fever (15-12), who still led 74-72 entering the fourth.

Then she scored her team’s first 14 points of the period, including 10 straight for either team after Kahleah Copper gave Phoenix (16-10) a 77-76 edge less than a minute into the fourth.

Boston went 6-of-11 from the field and 10-of-13 at the free-throw line for Indiana, which shot 51.6 percent from the field, including 11-of-24 from 3-point range. McDonald scored 17 in the first half.

Meanwhile, Alyssa Thomas had 32 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists for Phoenix, which started strong and shot 49.3 percent overall. The Mercury, though, committed 19 turnovers that led to 25 Fever points. Copper scored 22 as the Mercury lost for the fourth time in five contests.

Indiana led 55-50 at halftime, and 72-62 during the third quarter. However, the Mercury scored 10 of the final 12 of the third — six coming from Sami Whitcomb (18 points) during that stretch — to trail by just two entering the fourth.

The Fever were behind by as many as 12 in the first quarter, and 30-20 entering the second. Then, they took advantage of eight Phoenix turnovers in the second quarter and made five of their eight first-half 3-pointers to outscore the visitors 35-20 in the period.

Indiana trailed 35-26 when it scored the next 12 points of the contest. Seven of those points came via McDonald, who went 6-of-7 from the field and hit all three of her 3-point attempts in the opening half.

Indiana’s six first-quarter turnovers matched their made field goals during the period. Those miscues led to seven points for the Mercury, who got 21 combined from Thomas, Copper and Satou Sabally to take that 10-point lead after the first 10 minutes.
