LPGA News: Lottie Woad maintains 2-stroke lead at Scottish Open

0

Lottie Woad enters the final round of her first tournament as a professional with a two-stroke lead at the ISPS Handa Women’s Scottish Open in Ayrshire, Scotland.

The 21-year-old Englishwoman began Saturday at the top of the leaderboard and stayed there with a 5-under 67 at Dundonald Links, moving to 17-under with a round of six birdies and one bogey.

“I’ll take it overall, but I feel like I probably played better than I did the last two days,” Woad said. “Just didn’t really score too well. Gave myself a lot of chances. Happy with how I played tee-to-green. Could have maybe holed a few more putts.”

Sharing second place at 15-under are South Korea’s Sei Young Kim (66 on Saturday) and Denmark’s Nanna Koerstz Madsen (67). South Korea’s Hyo Joo Kim (66) is in fourth at 14-under and World No. 1 Nelly Korda (70) is in fifth at 12-under.

Woad turned pro after finishing in a tie for third at the Evian Championship two weeks ago. She began the month with a victory at the Women’s Irish Open, where she became the first amateur to win on the Ladies European Tour since 2022.

Including her showing at the Evian Championship, Woad competed in seven majors as an amateur. She said her time in the spotlight prepared her for this moment.

“I had some experience sleeping on the leads … so yeah, I know what to expect and obviously there will be some nerves but looking forward to get going,” she said.

Woad was asked about the possibility of claiming a trophy in her pro debut.

“Yeah that would definitely be cool,” she said. “Obviously you can’t control what people are doing. I’m just going to try and play well, and if I play well, I’ll be happy tomorrow.”

Sei Young Kim’s round included an eagle at the par-5 14th hole and a birdie at the par-4 18th.

She has 12 career wins on the LPGA Tour but none since 2020.

“I’m waiting long time,” she said. “I’m still working hard and always, always goal is to reach and win the tournament. So yeah, we are all like working hard for this. We’ll see.”

Koerstz Madsen chipped in for eagle on the par-5 third hole and posted three straight birdies at Nos. 14-16.

“I need to go work on my driver right now,” Koerstz Madsen said. “I need that to work if I will have a shot tomorrow. So yeah, I’m going to spend half an hour on the range and hopefully it will work.”

South Korea’s Hye-Jin Choi moved into a tie for seventh at 8-under with a 7-under 65, the low round of the day.

NHL News: Blackhawks G Arvid Soderblom signs 2-year extension

The Chicago Blackhawks signed goaltender Arvid Soderblom to a two-year, $5.5 million extension on Saturday.

The deal runs through the 2026-27 season for Soderblom, who avoided arbitration.

Soderblom, 25, posted a 10-18-7 record with a 3.18 goals-against average and .898 save percentage in 36 games (33 starts) last season. He set career highs in both wins and games played.

He is 17-52-11 with a 3.55 GAA and .889 save percentage in 86 career games (77 starts) with the Blackhawks. He signed with Chicago as an undrafted free agent in 2021.

Report: Clippers sign G TyTy Washington Jr.

The Los Angeles Clippers agreed to a one-year deal with guard TyTy Washington Jr., according to ESPN.

Washington was a first-round pick in the 2022 NBA Draft with his draft rights being acquired by the Houston Rockets. For his career, he is averaging 3.3 points and 1.2 assists per game, while shooting 34.7 percent from the field.

As a rookie, Washington appeared in 31 games for the Rockets, averaging a meager 14.0 minutes.

Following the season, Washington was traded to the Atlanta Hawks, then traded again to the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder waived him, and he signed a two-way deal with the Milwaukee Bucks.

In 2023-24, Washington appeared in only 11 games for Milwaukee, logging 56 total minutes.

During the offseason, Washington was on the move, once again, signing a two-way deal with the Phoenix Suns, who also played him sparingly.

On the surface, Washington’s numbers are alarming. Nevertheless, the 23-year-old has never gotten the opportunity to play a significant role in the NBA. He will look to make the team’s final roster and develop behind future Hall of Fame guards James Harden and Chris Paul.

CFL News: Tiger-Cats, Kenny Lawler face stingy Lions secondary

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats and star receiver Kenny Lawler look to continue their hot streaks Sunday against the host BC Lions in Vancouver.

The Tiger-Cats (4-2) have won four straight games and Lawler already has eight touchdown catches through six games, including a 41-yard score in last weekend’s 30-15 victory at Ottawa.

As the favorite target for veteran quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell, Lawler is on an early pace to challenge the CFL single-season record of 24 TD catches set by Winnipeg’s Milt Stegall in 2002.

Lawler told TSN this week that he is aware of the record but not focused on it.

“I’m disciplined in my beliefs and really what I truly believe is that when you put the work in … everything just happens naturally,” Lawler said. “Everything takes care of itself. (The record) is not my biggest concern. My biggest concern is always about making the play, doing whatever it takes for my teammates, and then the personal accolades always come.”

Hamilton’s passing game faces a tough challenge Sunday against the Lions (3-4), who are allowing a league-low 212.3 yards per game through the air. BC ranks second in total defense at 323.7 yards per game.

The Lions had a two-game winning streak snapped with a 33-27 setback at home last weekend against Saskatchewan, which has the CFL’s best record at 6-1.

Lions head coach Buck Pierce understands the difficulty of trying to contain Lawler, having served as the receiver’s offensive coordinator in Winnipeg in 2023 and 2024.

“He’s a highly motivated, competitive, driven individual,” Pierce said, per TSN. “I loved my time with Kenny, watching him develop and grow. And watching him over the last couple of years, he’s really matured and taken on a leadership role.”

The Lions are 1-2 at home and the Tiger-Cats are 2-1 on the road entering their first meeting of the season. They will square off again in Hamilton on Thursday, Aug. 7.

The Lions have their own star wideout in Keon Hatcher, whose 574 receiving yards ranked No. 2 in the league after Lawler’s 644 going into this weekend.

Eight Tiger-Cats are listed as out on the injury report, including starting defensive lineman TyJuan Garbutt (knee). For the Lions, defensive back Jalon Edwards-Cooper (knee) is questionable after a week of limited practices.

Kaden Groves wins penultimate stage of Tour de France

0

Australian Kaden Groves covered the final 16 kilometers solo on Saturday to win the penultimate stage of the Tour de France in Pontarlier.

The Stage 20 victory was the first for Groves, who completed the hilly 184.2-kilometer trek from Nantua nearly a minute ahead of Dutch cyclists Frank van den Broek and Pascal Eenkhoorn.

The race concludes Sunday in Paris, where defending champion Tadej Pogacar will chase his fourth Tour de France triumph along the capital city’s famed Champs-Elysees.

Wearing the yellow jersey as the race’s overall leader, Pogacar, of Slovenia, enters the final 132.3-kilometer Stage 21 with a lead of four minutes and 24 seconds over rival Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark.

Pogacar (2020, 2021 and 2024) and Vingegaard (2022 and 2023) have swept the past five editions of the world’s most celebrated cycling competition.

Pogacar is bidding to become the sixth man to win the Tour de France at least four times, joining Jacques Anquetil (five), Eddy Merckx (five), Bernard Hinault (five), Miguel Indurain (five) and Chris Froome (four).

CHAMP News: Padraig Harrington leads ISPS Handa Senior Open by two shots

Padraig Harrington carded his second consecutive 5-under 65 on Saturday and holds a two-shot lead over Justin Leonard after three rounds of the ISPS Handa Senior Open at Berkshire, England.

Harrington is at 13-under 197 entering the final round at Sunningdale Golf Course. Leonard also shot his second straight 65 on Saturday.

Thomas Bjorn, of Denmark, shot a 67 and is in third place at 10-under 200.

Harrington, of Ireland, had six birdies and one bogey on Saturday but wasn’t overly enamored of his play.

“I still wasn’t comfortable,” he told Sky Sports after Saturday’s round. “I don’t think I rode my luck as much today. I certainly didn’t play much better than yesterday. Maybe a bit more cautious today.

“I don’t feel very good about how I’m hitting the ball. I’m trying to get away from that and not worry about that because clearly I’m scoring well. Better off shooting 13-under par and not feeling so good about it than thinking you’re swinging it great and being level par.”

Harrington is looking for his third senior major title. He won the 2022 and 2025 U.S. Senior Open events, with the latter win coming last month.

Leonard had seven birdies and two bogeys on Saturday and is looking for his second win of the season. He prevailed at the Chubb Classic in February.

“Guys love to win, as I do, so putting a lot of work in,” Leonard said in a video interview after the round.

Bjorn had six birdies and three bogeys during his round on Saturday.

Clark Dennis fired a blistering 64 to move up 21 spots into a tie for fourth at 8 under. Kevin Sutherland (66), Australia’s Greg Chalmers (66) and New Zealand’s Steven Alker (66) also are part of that tie.

Dennis had seven birdies and one bogey on Saturday.

South Africa’s Ernie Els (69) and Australia’s Scott Hend (64) are tied for eighth at 203. Hend moved up 28 spots with his stellar round.

UFC News: UFC Fight Night: Reinier de Ridder defeats Robert Whittaker by split decision

Reinier de Ridder took home a split-decision victory Saturday over Robert Whittaker in the main event of UFC Fight Night at Abu Dhabi.

De Ridder (21-2-0 MMA) earned a 48-47 margin from two judges, Ben Cartlidge and David Lethaby, while Mike Bell was the lone judge to give the edge to Whittaker (27-9-0 MMA) at 48-47.

Whittaker landed a big knockdown with a strike in the third round of the middleweight match, but de Ridder recovered and dominated the stat sheet. De Ridder landed 192 total strikes, while Whittaker connected on only 70. Additionally, de Ridder recorded two takedowns.

“I expected to take him down and choke him out,” de Ridder said. “He was amazing. So tough, so durable, heavy f–ing hands.”

The 34-year-old continues to rise up the ranks in the middleweight division, picking up his fourth straight UFC win and fifth MMA victory in a row.

Elsewhere on the main card, Bogdan Guskov (18-3-0 MMA) knocked out Nikita Krylov (30-11-0 MMA) 4:18 into the first round of their light heavyweight matchup. It is the fourth consecutive win by either knockout or submission for the Uzbekistani.

Petr Yan (19-5-0 MMA) defeated Marcus McGhee (10-2-0 MMA) by unanimous decision in a bantamweight clash. Yan outpaced his opponent in total strikes, significant strikes, control and takedowns.

In the middleweight match, Shara Magomedov (16-1-0 MMA) bounced back from his first professional loss, which came against Michael Page (23-3-0 MMA) in February, to win over Marc-Andre Barriault (17-10-0 MMA) by unanimous decision. Magomedov earned a 30-27 score from all three judges.

Flyweight competitor Asu Almabayev (22-3-0 MMA) also won by unanimous decision, defeating 24-year-old Peruvian Jose Ochoa (8-2-0 MMA). Ochoa battled, landing 118 total strikes, but Almabayev controlled the fight with seven takedowns.

In the prelims, Muslim Salikhov (22-5-0 MMA) landed the highlight of the night, knocking out opponent Carlos Leal (22-7-0 MMA) in only 42 seconds in their welterweight fight.

MLB News: Mariners’ George Kirby seeks another gem in encounter vs. Angels

Seattle Mariners right-hander George Kirby will make his second start of the season against the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday in Anaheim, Calif.

The first one went very well for Kirby, who struck out a career-high 14 batters and didn’t walk one in seven innings of a 3-2 victory on June 8. He allowed a two-run homer by Taylor Ward and one other hit overall before exiting after just 96 pitches.

“That’s the guy he can be,” catcher Mitch Garver said of Kirby (4-5, 4.65 ERA). “It’s probably one of the most important starts we’ve had.”

Another big one comes Saturday night as the Mariners look to bounce back from a 3-2 loss in 10 innings to the Angels. Seattle is clinging to the second wild-card slot in the American League.

Shortstop Zach Neto celebrated his first-ever bobblehead night with the first walk-off hit of his career, a two-out single that drove in LaMonte Wade Jr. from second base.

The win snapped a four-game losing streak for Los Angeles, which closed to within 4 1/2 games of the final wild-card spot.

“It means everything, seeing everybody with my bobblehead. It’s very special,” Neto said after getting doused with Gatorade. “We needed this win. Flush it at midnight and come back in tomorrow and try to do the same thing.”

“That was tremendous,” interim Angels manager Ray Montgomery said. “Bobblehead nights (are) good omens. I’m sure he was excited about it. That was good. It was fun. I’m glad he got the opportunity to do it.”

The question is will it stop the Angels from being sellers at the trade deadline? Several media outlets reported that Los Angeles was shopping closer Kenley Jansen, third baseman Yoan Moncada, utility infielder Luis Rengifo, starting left-hander Tyler Anderson and Ward.

Anderson (2-6, 4.43 ERA) is scheduled to start Saturday night for the Angels.

He is 1-3 with a 5.01 ERA in 10 career starts against the Mariners. He picked up the loss in Kirby’s gem on June 8 allowing three runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Kirby is 5-4 with a 3.52 ERA in nine career starts against Los Angeles, including 4-2 with a 3.38 ERA in six starts in Anaheim.

Seattle’s runs on Friday came on solo homers by center fielder Julio Rodriguez. It was the fifth multi-home run game of Rodriguez’s career as he became the third player in Mariners’ history to have five or more multi-homer games by the age of 24. The other two were Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. (14) and Alex Rodriguez (14).

“Incredibly talented player,” Seattle manager Dan Wilson said of Julio Rodriguez. “He continues to let that talent shine. Just really seeing the ball well right now. Couple of homers off a tough opponent tonight in (Jose) Soriano. Just thought he was on each pitch and seeing the ball well, and when he got his pitch he was able to drive it.”

First baseman Josh Naylor, obtained in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday, flew across the country from Pittsburgh on Friday and had a single in four at-bats in his Mariners’ debut.

MLB News: David Peterson, Robbie Ray go head-to-head as Mets visit Giants

David Peterson will get an opportunity to personally thank Robbie Ray for his All-Star invitation when they go head-to-head on the mound as the New York Mets and host San Francisco Giants continue their three-game series on Saturday evening.

Francisco Lindor hit his 20th home run of the season, and the first four batters in the Mets’ order combined for seven hits, six RBIs and four runs, lifting New York to a trip-opening 8-1 romp over the Giants on Friday night.

Peterson (6-4, 2.90 ERA) appeared destined to watch last week’s All-Star Game on television before the Giants elected to start Ray on the Sunday before the showcase, disqualifying him from pitching in Atlanta.

Shortly after Ray was formally listed as the projected starter, Peterson got the call that he’d be the veteran’s replacement.

Coincidentally, Peterson followed the Giants’ Logan Webb to the mound in the All-Star Game. Each threw a scoreless inning — Webb the third, Peterson the fourth — in the 6-6 contest that ended with their National League team winning a home run contest.

Peterson continued the form that earned him the All-Star nod in his first start after the break, limiting the Cincinnati Reds to one unearned run over six innings in his team’s 3-2 win last Sunday.

It was another indication he’s fully healthy after he underwent surgery on a torn labrum in his left hip after the 2023 campaign, with the rehab delaying his 2024 debut until May 29 and limiting his innings last season to 121.

He’s already reached 115 innings this season — not counting the one inning he threw in the All-Star Game.

“For me after the surgery, it was just getting back to being healthy, getting used to the new range of motion and all that came with the surgery,” the left-hander told reporters before the break. “It was nice to have a full, regular off-season (leading into the 2025 season) to work on my strength and get that back. It’s been good. It’s kind of what I’ve always thought was in there.”

Peterson has made three career starts against the Giants, going 1-1 with a 6.00 ERA.

While each team also had an All-Star on the mound to start Friday’s game, the Mets’ Clay Holmes and Giants’ Webb made it through just five and four innings, respectively.

Taxing a bullpen in a series opener is never good, but it puts pressure on Ray to go deep into Saturday’s game because the Giants have lost two starters in the last week.

With ineffective Hayden Birdsong having gotten demoted to the minors and Landen Roupp forced onto the 15-day injured list with a sore elbow, the Giants already have designated Sunday as a bullpen day.

“Look, it feels like every team goes through it, and sometimes when it rains, it pours a little bit,” Giants manager Bob Melvin bemoaned to reporters before Friday’s game. “We do have some guys we like in Triple-A as far as the depth goes, so we’ll see where that goes — and we’ll see what the deadline brings.”

Ray (9-4, 2.92 ERA) came out of the All-Star break with one of his worst outings of the season, tagged for five runs in 4 1/3 innings by the host Toronto Blue Jays in an 8-6 loss last Sunday. But the left-hander has had success against the Mets, going 4-1 with a 3.48 ERA against them in seven lifetime starts.
