NHL News: Maple Leafs acquire F Dakota Joshua from Canucks

The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired forward Dakota Joshua from the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2028 NHL Draft.

Joshua, 29, recorded 14 points (seven goals, seven assists) and a team second-best 193 hits in 57 games last season. He missed the early portion of the campaign while recovering from surgery to treat testicular cancer.

“Dakota went through a lot last season before the year even started and we were very impressed in how he handled such a difficult off-ice situation,” Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin said in a statement. “Once healthy, he tried hard to help the team in many ways, and we want to wish him the best moving forward in Toronto.”

Signed to a four-year, $13 million contract on June 27, 2024, Joshua has totaled 78 points (40 goals, 38 assists) in 241 career games since he was selected by the Maple Leafs in the fifth round of the 2014 NHL Draft.

Joshua was traded to St. Louis in 2019 and made his NHL debut in 2020-21, playing for the Blues and Canucks.

Goaltender Lukas Dostal reached a five-year contract extension to remain with the Anaheim Ducks, the team announced Thursday.

Per The Athletic, the deal is for $32.5 million and carries a $6.5 average annual value.

“Super excited to announce that I’m staying in Anaheim for another five years,” Dostal said in a video message to the fans shared by the Ducks on X, formerly Twitter.

Dostal has a 42-58-13 record with two shutouts, a 3.29 GAA and a .902 save percentage in 121 career appearances (107 starts) with the Ducks.

NCAA places Memphis basketball, softball on probation

The NCAA has placed the University of Memphis athletic department on probation for two years and levied financial penalites because of academic integrity violations in the men’s basketball and softball programs.

An NCAA investigation found that an academic counselor paid two softball players to do classwork and provide test answers for a men’s basketball player that they shared classes with during the 2023-24 season.

Memphis already was on probation because of two previous infractions cases and will have the penalty extended through July 15, 2027. In addition, the university must pay a $30,000 fine and 1 percent of the combined budgets for the two sports.

The Tigers basketball team vacated three wins over Wichita State, Temple and Tulane from the span between Jan. 25 and Feb. 18, 2024. The softball team was winless during that period.

The NCAA report did not name basketball coach Penny Hardaway in the case, nor did it identify the student-athletes involved. The Memphis Commercial Appeal reported that the men’s player was forward Malcolm Dandridge, a fifth-year graduate student who was held out of the last five games of the 2023-24 season, and the softball players were catcher Ally Callahan and outfielder Aaliyah Dixon.

The university fired academic advisor Leslie Brooks in February 2024, and the NCAA gave her a 10-year show-cause penalty, which can impact her ability to find another job in college athletes. The NCAA said Brooks paid the softball players $550 from her personal account to perform the schoolwork.

A softball trainer overheard players on the team discussing the situation, according to the NCAA, and another softball player later reported it to the trainer and the head coach, who informed the administration.

In an interview with university officials about paying the softball players to help Dandridge, Brooks admitted that she knew she was violating NCAA rules but he needed academic help and “she felt sorry for him,” according to the NCAA report.

The university negotiated the penalties with the NCAA’s committee on infractions.

“I would like to thank our staff who worked swiftly and collaboratively with the NCAA to take appropriate action and implement corrective measures,” Memphis president Bill Hardgrave said in a prepared statement. “The University of Memphis is committed to a culture of compliance with all NCAA rules and will move our program forward accordingly.”

NHL News: Blue Jackets F Yegor Chinakhov requests trade

Columbus Blue Jackets forward Yegor Chinakhov has requested a trade from the team, citing conflict with head coach Dean Evason.

The Russian player announced his wish in a statement released Thursday on social media by his agent, Shumi Babaev.

“I had some misunderstandings with the coach during the season. Now I would be glad to have a trade. I would like to move to a different location,” Chinakhov said in the statement posted on X. “Will I return to Russia? As long as I can play in the NHL, I will keep developing here.”

Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell reacted to the request in an interview with The Athletic.

Waddell acknowledged that Chinakhov “fell out of favor” with Evason. The GM added that he will continue to engage in trade talks with other teams but is looking for value in return.

“I’m not just going to trade him because you said to trade him,” he told The Athletic.

The Blue Jackets selected Chinakhov, 24, with the 21st overall selection of the 2020 NHL Draft.

The past two seasons, a back injury limited the playing time of Chinakhov. In 2024-25, he posted 15 points (seven goals, eight assists) in 30 games. The previous season, he tallied 29 points (16 goals, 13 assists) in 53 games.

Chinakhov has one season remaining on his contract before becoming a restricted free agent next summer. He will earn $2.1 million.

“We are fully aware that there is an active contract in place, and if Yegor’s request for a trade does not materialize, he will continue to give 120 percent in fulfilling his responsibilities,” Babaev said in a separate social media post.

In 175 career games, he has 71 points (34 goals, 37 assists) and a minus-42 rating.

UFC News: Crowd will be behind retiring Dustin Poirier vs. Max Holloway at UFC 318

UFC 318 will culminate with the trilogy fight between Max Holloway and the retiring Dustin Poirier for Holloway’s “BMF” title on Saturday in New Orleans.

Holloway (26-8 MMA) and Poirier (30-9, 1 NC) previously fought in 2012 and 2019, with Poirier winning both fights. The most recent meeting saw Poirier win a unanimous decision for the UFC interim lightweight championship in one of the promotion’s most talked-about fights.

Shifting to the trilogy fight, it’s Poirier’s final UFC fight, and the Smoothie King Center will play host to the festivities. It is Poirier’s first fight in his home state in a decade, which means a great deal to the 36-year-old.

“If you chase your dreams, anything is possible,” Poirier said.

Poirier confirmed rapper and New Orleans icon Lil Wayne will be part of his entrance for the fight, revealing that with a win, he wants Wayne to be part of the belt presentation ceremony.

Holloway, despite being from Hawaii, wants the same treatment.

Holloway showed mutual respect toward his rival but said he is embracing the role of fighting in enemy territory.

“It’s gonna be a fun one, man,” Holloway said. “It’s gonna be a fun one. It’s his last dance … Bring out more of the boos, please. That’s what I like to hear.”

Holloway has held the symbolic “BMF” title since UFC 300, when he knocked out Justin Gaethje.

Neither fighter offered an exact prediction for the fight, but did say that they hope to put on one of the best fights in recent memory, similar to their April 2019 encounter.

Nevertheless, Holloway-Poirier 3 tops a 14-fight card with main card festivities getting underway on ESPN+ pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.

Below is the bout order (subject to change):

–Paulo Costa vs. Roman Kopylov, middleweight
–Kevin Holland vs. Daniel Rodriguez, welterweight
–Dan Ige vs. Patricio Pitbull, featherweight
–Michael Johnson vs. Daniel Zellhuber, lightweight

Report: Deal being finalized to return Damian Lillard to Trail Blazers

Nine-time All-Star Damian Lillard is finalizing a three-year, $42 million contract to return to the Portland Trail Blazers, ESPN reported on Thursday.

Per ESPN, Lillard now will receive a salary of $70 million between his existing deal with the Milwaukee Bucks and his new contract with the Trail Blazers. He also will have a player-option in 2027 and a no-trade clause in a deal that returns Lillard to the franchise with which he spent his first 11 NBA seasons.

Lillard, who turned 35 on Tuesday, saw his season come to an abrupt end on April 27 after an excruciating torn left Achilles tendon knocked him out of the rest of the playoffs.

He is expected to miss the 2025-26 season.

Lillard was hurt in the first quarter of the Bucks’ 129-103 loss to the Indiana Pacers in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference first-round series in just his third game back after dealing with a blood clot in his right calf. He missed the final 14 games of the regular season and the first contest of the playoff series against the Pacers.

Lillard requested a trade out of Portland in the summer of 20xx and the team obliged. The Trail Blazers were entering a transition into a rebuild and Lillard wanted to go to a team in which he could compete for a championship.

Lillard averaged 24.9 points, 7.1 assists and 4.7 rebounds in 58 regular-season games during his second season with the Bucks. He was waived by Milwaukee on July 7.

Lillard owns career averages of 25.1 points, 6.7 assists and 4.3 rebounds in 900 regular-season contests. His 2,804 3-pointers rank fourth in NBA history and his 22,598 points rank eighth among active players.
