NCAAF News: Texas sticking with Arch, ‘so close’ in passing game

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian is sticking with Arch Manning at quarterback with visions of an imminent breakthrough in the passing game.

Sarkisian said Monday there’s no changes to make that aren’t easily correctable as the Longhorns (2-1) prepare for their final non-conference tuneup on Saturday at home against Sam Houston.

“If Arch was having a bunch of mental errors and not operating the offense well, that maybe would have required to take him out,” Sarkisian said Monday after reviewing Manning’s 11-of-25 passing game against UTEP.

“I didn’t think that was the case. Different things require different things to get your point across. We handled it accordingly. We’ll handle it accordingly this week and expect him to come out and have a great game Saturday.”

Manning said he is not panicking over the slow start statistically.

“I know the type of player I am. I know I can be better,” he said Monday. “I know we can be better as an offense, so it’s time to get going.”

Manning rushed for two touchdowns, threw for a score and finished the win with 114 passing yards and one interception.

Still, Sarkisian said he was more optimistic than ever reviewing the game film because he senses the Longhorns are on the verge of a big game from the offense. It will likely come without starting running back CJ Baxter. Sarkisian said Monday the injury doesn’t appear to be a major one, and Texas will play it safe with a trip to Florida in two weeks for the SEC opener.

“We don’t think it’s overly significant but he’ll be out this week just from a precautionary standpoint to hopefully get him ready for SEC play,” Sarkisian said.

Manning is completing 55.3 percent of his passes with six touchdowns and three interceptions in three games in 2025. The Longhorns are not planning to change things up pregame — or in-game — to simply “get his attention,” Sarkisian said.

“Just coach him. That’s our job, to coach. Different scenarios call for different measures of what you need to do,” Sarkisian explained. “Different things require different things to get your point across.”

MLB News: Phillies clinch NL East title with 10th-inning win over Dodgers

J.T. Realmuto hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper each hit home runs and the visiting Philadelphia Phillies clinched the National League East title with a 6-5 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday.

Weston Wilson also hit a home run for the Phillies (90-61), while right-hander David Robertson escaped a bases-loaded jam with one out in the 10th to earn his first save as Philadelphia improved to 14-4 since Aug. 28. Jhoan Duran (7-6) earned the win.

After he gave up a single earned run over his last four starts, Phillies left-hander Ranger Suarez gave up three runs on seven hits over six innings.

In winning their second consecutive division title, the Phillies moved 5 1/2 games ahead of the Dodgers in the chase for the second-best record from an NL division winner and a bye through the wild-card round of the playoffs.

Max Muncy, Mookie Betts and Andy Pages hit home runs for the Dodgers (84-66), who lost to the Phillies for the third time in four games this season. Dodgers left-handers Anthony Banda, Jack Dreyer and Alex Vesia combined to give up four runs over 2 1/3 innings. Blake Treinen (1-5) was charged with the loss.

Los Angeles went with an opener in Banda in front of right-hander Emmet Sheehan but he gave up a first-inning home run to Schwarber, his NL-best 53rd of the season.

Betts hit the first of his two sacrifice flies in the third inning for a 1-1 tie.

The Dodgers jumped in front 3-1 in the fifth inning on a leadoff home run from Muncy, his 18th, and another sacrifice fly from Betts. The Phillies went up 4-3 in the seventh on an RBI single from Bryson Stott and a two-run homer from Wilson, his fifth, both against Dreyer.

Betts tied the score 4-4 with a home run in the seventh, his 19th and his fifth in 11 games.

Harper’s home run for a 5-4 lead, that came in the eighth inning, was his 27th of the season. Pages tied it in the ninth for the Dodgers against Duran with a one-out home run to left field, his 25th.

Robertson got Miguel Rojas to pop out and Muncy to ground out to end the game in his 16th appearance.

MLB News: Blowout win sends D-backs over Giants in NL wild-card race

James McCann hit a two-run homer in a six-run sixth inning, Zac Gallen threw six strong innings and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat San Francisco 8-1 in Phoenix on Monday to leapfrog the Giants in the National League wild-card race.

McCann homered for the second straight game and Ildemaro Vargas had a two-run single to ignite the sixth-inning rally against Matt Gage (0-1) and two other Giants relievers.

Geraldo Perdomo singled, doubled, tripled, walked twice and drove in two runs for the D-backs. His triple capped the big sixth, and he doubled home the final run in the eighth.

Gallen (12-14) gave up two hits and one run, Casey Schmitt’s homer in the third. He struck out six and walked one for his fifth victory in his past seven decisions.

The D-backs (76-75) won their fourth game in the past five and closed within 1 1/2 games of the idle New York Mets (77-73) for the third NL wild-card spot. The Mets open a three-game home series against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday.

The Giants (75-75) lost their third straight and dropped into a tie with the Cincinnati Reds (75-75), two games back of New York.

Corbin Carroll doubled to lead off the sixth, knocking Gage out of the game. Joel Peguero entered and walked two to load the bases before Vargas singled to right to score two, though he was thrown out at second on the play.

The Giants made another pitching change, going with Joey Lucchesi, and pinch hitter Jordan Lawlar added an RBI double before McCann homered. Jake McCarthy reached on an error and scored on Perdomo’s triple.

McCann wore jersey No. 21 instead of his usual No. 8 to honor Roberto Clemente, who is celebrated every season on Sept. 15.

Giants rookie starter Kai-Wei Teng kept his team in the game, giving up two hits and an unearned run in four innings. He struck out five and walked one in his seventh appearance and sixth start.

San Francisco designated hitter Bryce Eldridge, promoted before the game from Triple-A Sacramento, went 0-for-3 with a strikeout in his major league debut.

The D-backs took a 1-0 lead in the first with help from Teng, who walked Perdomo and hit Ketel Marte with a pitch before striking out Carroll and Gabriel Moreno. Perdomo took third on a passed ball and scored on Teng’s errant pickoff throw to first.

Schmitt’s 418-foot homer to left-center tied it with one out in the third. Gallen has given up a career-high 29 homers this season, second most in the NL.

MLB News: Yordan Alvarez exits early, but Astros double up Rangers

Zach Cole and Jesus Sanchez came up big after an injury to Yordan Alvarez, and the Houston Astros rallied for a 6-3 win over the visiting Texas Rangers on Monday in the opener of a three-game series with major postseason ramifications.

Alvarez had to leave the game after he slipped on home plate while scoring a first-inning run, spraining his left ankle. The run, one of two that resulted from a throwing error by Rangers pitcher Jack Leiter, gave Houston an early 2-0 lead.

The Astros (82-69) ended the night three games up on the Rangers (79-72) in the race for the third and final American League wild-card position. Houston is now a half-game back of the idle Seattle Mariners (82-68), who lead the AL West.

Alvarez’s injury prompted Cole to enter the game in right field, while Sanchez slid over into the opening in left. Both proceeded to play significant roles in Houston’s third win in the past four games.

Cole launched a two-out, two-run homer off Leiter in the fifth inning, putting the Astros on top for good at 4-3. The long ball was the second of the rookie’s four-game major league career.

Texas had a chance to tie the game in the seventh, when Wyatt Langford singled with two on and two outs. But Sanchez, who had started the game in right field, threw out Johan Heim at the plate, preserving the 4-3 advantage.

Sanchez then doubled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, and scored when Jeremy Pena followed with a run-scoring double. Cole then made it a three-RBI night with a single that scored Pena for a 6-3 lead.

Astros relievers Steven Okert, Jayden Murray, Bryan King and Bryan Abreu threw 4 1/3 innings of shutout ball in relief of Jason Alexander. The starter was pulled two outs into the fifth, having served up a two-run homer to Josh Jung and an RBI single to Josh Smith earlier in the inning.

Okert (3-2), who struck out three of the four batters he faced, was credited with the win. Abreu notched his sixth save despite a two-hit ninth.

Alexander was charged with all three Rangers runs, only one of which was earned. He gave up five hits and one walk while striking out five.

Leiter (9-9) permitted six runs, three earned. He served up five hits and a walk, and he struck out four.

Pena joined Cole with two hits for the Astros, who were out-hit 10-6.

Langford and Jung, whose homer was his 14th, had a pair of hits apiece for the Rangers, who lost a second straight after a six-game winning streak.

MLB News: Yankees blanked by Twins, fall 5 back in AL East race

Austin Martin doubled and drove in four runs, Simeon Woods Richardson struck out a career-high 11 over six scoreless innings, and the Minnesota Twins pulled away for a 7-0 win over the New York Yankees on Monday night in Minneapolis.

Brooks Lee went 2-for-4 with a homer, a double and two RBIs for Minnesota (66-84) in the opener of a three-game set. Luke Keaschall also drove in a run.

Jose Caballero doubled for the Yankees’ only extra-base hit. Aaron Judge went 0-for-1 and drew three walks for New York (83-67), which collected only two hits and dropped five games behind the American League East-leading Toronto Blue Jays (88-62).

New York also saw its AL wild-card lead cut to one game over the idle Boston Red Sox (82-68). The Houston Astros (81-69) hold the third and final spot, a game behind the Red Sox.

Woods Richardson (7-4) posted his best outing of the season. The right-hander gave up two hits and walked three while seeing his ERA drop from 4.58 to 4.31.

Yankees left-hander Carlos Rodon (16-9) gave up two runs on five hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out four.

Twins relievers Kody Funderburk, Travis Adams and Pierson Ohl combined for three hitless innings.

Minnesota grabbed a 1-0 lead in third. Jhonny Pereda hit a leadoff double to left, advanced to third on an infield single by Edouard Julien and scored on a fielder’s choice by Martin.

The Twins increased their lead to 2-0 in the fifth. Lee tracked a 92-mph fastball on the first pitch of the inning and lifted it 355 feet over the wall in left for his 15th homer.

Minnesota erupted for five runs in the seventh. Trevor Larnach started the big inning with a double to right. Lee followed moments later with an RBI double.

The Twins loaded the bases with one out for Martin, who delivered a three-run double to left. The hit scored Lee, Julien and Byron Buxton and made it 6-0.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone brought in Camilo Doval to replace Luke Weaver, but the Twins weren’t finished. Keaschall hit an RBI single to score Martin for a 7-0 lead.

MLB News: Colton Cowser’s 3-run shot powers Orioles past White Sox

Colton Cowser hit a three-run homer and Kyle Bradish pitched five strong innings for his first win in 15 months as the visiting Baltimore Orioles opened a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox with a 4-1 victory on Monday.

Bradish (1-1) allowed one run on four hits with four walks and nine strikeouts in his fourth start of the season. He underwent Tommy John surgery soon after earning his last victory on June 8, 2024.

Kade Strowd tossed a scoreless sixth inning and Dietrich Enns followed with three perfect frames for his second save.

Enns threw 23 of his 32 pitches for strikes and the Orioles’ pitchers retired the final 15 batters faced in order.

Jackson Holliday had two hits for Baltimore (70-80), which snapped a three-game losing streak and won the 10 time in its past 11 meetings against the White Sox.

Chicago (57-94) lost its fourth straight game and struck out 15 times, one shy of its season high.

The Orioles broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning. Chicago reliever Steven Wilson (2-2) retired the first two batters of the inning and was replaced by Tyler Alexander after walking Coby Mayo.

Mayo moved to second on Samuel Basallo’s single before Cowser hit a three-run blast to left-center field, his second homer in as many games and 15th of the season.

The White Sox took a 1-0 lead in the first inning against Bradish, who walked leadoff hitter Mike Tauchman. After striking out the next two batters, Bradish allowed a single to Colson Montgomery before Curtis Mead singled in a run.

Bradish settled in and had seven strikeouts through the first three innings.

Baltimore pulled even with a run in the third inning against Sean Burke. With two runners on and two outs, Basallo scored from second on Jeremiah Jackson’s single up the middle.

Burke followed opener Tyler Gilbert and allowed one run on two hits with four walks and four strikeouts over four innings.

MLB News: Reds outlast Cards, just 2 back of final NL wild-card spot

Tyler Stephenson drove in three runs as the visiting Cincinnati Reds snapped their three-game losing streak by defeating the St. Louis Cardinals 11-6 Monday night.

Sal Stewart went 3-for-5 with a homer, three runs and two RBIs as the Reds (75-75) moved within two games of the New York Mets for the final National League wild-card slot. Matt McLain drove in two and scored twice in the opener of a three-game set.

Reds starter Zack Littell allowed four runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out three and walked none.

Connor Phillips (3-0) earned the victory with a scoreless eighth.

Alec Burleson drove in two runs for the Cardinals (73-78), who have lost six of seven games and are 4 1/2 games behind the Mets.

Willson Contreras went 2-for-3 with an RBI before exiting with right bicep tightness. Nolan Arenado went 2-for-4 with an RBI in his first game since July 30 after recovering from shoulder soreness.

Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits in six innings. He struck out six and walked one.

Ryan Fernandez (0-4) took the loss, giving up one run on one hit and two walks in one-third of an inning.

Stewart’s first-inning homer put the Red up 1-0. The Cardinals tied the game in the second on Arenado’s RBI single, which scored Contreras.

Cincinnati moved ahead 3-1 in the third. McLain hit a single, Noelvi Marte walked, Miguel Andujar hit an RBI single and Marte scored on an error.

St. Louis went up 4-3 in the sixth with a two-out rally. Brendan Donovan hit a single, Littell hit Ivan Herrera, Burleson hit a two-run double and Contreras added an RBI single.

The Reds rallied to grab a 6-4 lead in the seventh on Stephenson’s single, Elly De La Cruz’s walk, McLain’s two-run double and TJ Friedl’s RBI single.

In a back-and-forth affair, the Cardinals tied the game 6-6 in the bottom of the inning on Arenado’s double and singles by Thomas Saggese, Donovan and Herrera.

Cincinnati moved ahead 7-6 in the eighth on a single by Stewart, walks to Stephenson and De La Cruz and Will Benson’s sacrifice fly. Stewart’s RBI infield single and Stephenson’s three-run double made it 11-6 in the ninth.

MLB News: George Springer’s clutch hit sends Jays past Rays in 11

George Springer’s two-strike, two-out, RBI single in the 11th inning lifted the Toronto Blue Jays to their fifth straight victory, a 2-1 decision over the host Tampa Bay Rays to open a four-game series on Monday.

After challenging for catcher’s interference and failing, Toronto took its first lead when Springer ripped the next pitch, an 0-2 offering from Kevin Kelly (2-4), to left for a 2-1 lead.

Braydon Fisher (7-0) pitched out of a first-and-third, no-out jam in the bottom of the 11th by whiffing Brandon Lowe, Junior Caminero and Josh Lowe. Fisher threw two scoreless innings.

Ernie Clement doubled in the eighth inning and scored for Toronto (88-62), which produced five hits. The Blue Jays saw their American League East lead over the second-place New York Yankees (83-67) increase to five games.

Yandy Diaz had a perfect showing at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two walks for Tampa Bay (73-77).

In his major league debut, Blue Jays starter Trey Yesavage pitched five-plus innings and allowed one run and three hits. He struck out nine, walked two and retired eight straight at one point in his 69-pitch outing.

Scratched from his Sunday start for Triple-A Durham and sent to Tampa, Joe Boyle fired six scoreless frames and yielded just three hits for the Rays. He struck out five without a walk in his first big-league outing since Aug. 21.

Tampa Bay leadoff hitter Chandler Simpson welcomed Yesavage and his uniquely high pitching release to the majors with a sharp single to center. Diaz then sliced a double to right for the first run against the right-handed East Carolina alum.

However, Yesavage, a 22-year-old Pennsylvania native who pitched in the Futures Game two months ago in Atlanta, gave the home side fits after that. He looked like the power pitcher who fanned 160 and allowed just 54 hits in 98 frames in four levels of the Blue Jays’ farm system in 2025.

After managing just three singles against Boyle, the Blue Jays found no success against Rays left-hander Garrett Cleavinger, who tossed a perfect seventh.

In the eighth against right-hander Bryan Baker, Clement hit a leadoff double, and Tyler Heineman’s sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third. Andres Gimenez then tied it 1-1 with a sacrifice fly to left.

MLB News: Astros’ Yordan Alvarez headed for MRI on ankle

Houston Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez, who injured his left ankle while stepping on home plate Monday night, will undergo an MRI exam on Tuesday, according to manager Joe Espada.

Alvarez had a boot on his left foot when he exited Houston’s clubhouse on crutches, per The Athletic. The three-time All-Star had to come out of the game against the visiting Texas Rangers after getting hurt while scoring a run.

With Jeremy Pena on second and Alvarez on first with no outs in the bottom of the first, Carlos Correa topped a ball between the plate and the mound. Rangers pitcher Jack Leiter fielded the ball cleanly, but slipped as he fired the ball over first baseman Jake Burger’s head.

Pena scored easily and Alvarez ran through a stop sign to score as well. As Alvarez stepped over the leg of catcher Jonah Heim to evade a tag and touch the plate, he slipped and lost his balance and ability to slow down. Alvarez hopped in pain toward the dugout until teammate Christian Walker was able to stop his momentum.

Alvarez put little weight on his left leg as he hobbled down the dugout steps. Rookie outfielder Zach Cole entered the game for Alvarez in the top of the second.

Cole wound up going 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs as Houston won 6-3.

The injury comes at a particularly inopportune time for the Astros (82-69), who moved within a half-game of the idle first-place Seattle Mariners in American League West.

The Monday contest was Alvarez’s 48th game of the season as he missed 100 games after injuring his hand on May 2. Since returning to Houston’s lineup on Aug. 26, the lefty slugger has posted a .369 average with three homers and nine RBIs in 78 plate appearances.

For the year, he owns a .273/.364/.430 slash line along with six homers and 27 RBIs.

MLB News: Matt Olson, Braves back Spencer Strider, pound Nats

Matt Olson had four hits including a three-run homer, Spencer Strider allowed one run over seven innings and the visiting Atlanta Braves beat the Washington Nationals 11-3 on Monday night.

Drake Baldwin added a homer and two singles, driving in four runs for Atlanta (67-83), which had 16 hits in winning its second straight game. Ronald Acuna Jr. also homered. Olson added two doubles and a single and had four RBIs.

Strider (6-13) allowed one run on four hits. He struck out six and walked two.

Daylen Lile had two hits including a home run for Washington (62-88) and has reached base in 15 consecutive games.

Washington starter Mitchell Parker (8-16) gave up six runs on 10 hits in five-plus innings.

The Nationals took a 1-0 lead in the second when Lile hit a leadoff homer.

Atlanta went ahead in the fourth. Olson led off with a double and Acuna singled him to third. Ozzie Albies singled, scoring Olson and sending Acuna to third. Acuna scored to make it 2-1 when Ha-Seong Kim grounded into a double play.

Marcell Ozuna and Michael Harris II singled leading off the Atlanta fifth. Nacho Alvarez Jr. hit a comeback off Parker, who threw him out as the other runners advanced. Both runners held when Jurickson Profar grounded out, but Olson followed with a home run — his 26th of the season — into the second deck in right and the Braves led 5-1.

In the sixth, Kim led off with a double and scored on a Baldwin single to make it 6-1.

The Braves added on against Shinnosuke Ogasawara in the seventh. Olson doubled home Alvarez and, with two outs, Baldwin’s single scored Profar to make it 8-1.

Washington added two runs in the eighth on an RBI single by CJ Abrams and a double-play grounder by James Wood.

Acuna homered with one out in the ninth and Baldwin added a two-run shot to close the scoring.
