ATP News: Novak Djokovic able to ‘survive’ in U.S. Open return

0

Novak Djokovic dropped the first set and struggled to find his rhythm throughout but still managed to survive his second-round U.S. Open match against qualifier Zachary Svajda on Wednesday in New York.

After committing 14 unforced errors in losing an hour-long first set, the 38-year-old managed to take the last three sets from the American Svajda, who appeared to be struggling with cramps in the second half of the match, requesting the trainer multiple times during changeovers.

“Kudos to him for staying on the court,” Djokovic said after the match.

The seventh-seeded Djokovic was able to take advantage of Svajda’s physical struggles, winning eight straight games to take a 3-0 lead in the fourth set before finishing off Svajda with a final score of 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-3, 6-1.

The win gives Djokovic a 54-45 record in majors after losing the opening set, the best such mark by any man in the Open era.

He reached the third round of the U.S. Open for the 19th time in his career, a record he now shares with Roger Federer. Djokovic has never lost in the first two rounds at the New York tournament.

However, when asked after the match about his tennis, the Serbian star, who has won a men’s record 24 Grand Slam titles, wasn’t exactly celebrating his play.

“Not that great to be honest,” Djokovic said. “I was not really happy with my tennis in the first part of the match but also credit to Zach for playing some really high-quality tennis. It was unfortunate that he struggled with injury towards the end of the second, but kudos to him for staying on the court. He obviously could not serve as well as he did for the first set and a half but I wish him all the best.”

Djokovic will next face the winner of Wednesday’s match between Britain’s Cameron Norrie and Argentina’s Francisco Comesana.

Dawn Staley would have taken New York Knicks coaching job if offered

South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley confirmed she interviewed this summer for the New York Knicks’ head coaching vacancy, saying she was prepared to become the first woman to lead an NBA team if the job had been offered.

Speaking on the “Post Moves” podcast hosted by Candace Parker and Aliyah Boston, Staley said she entered the interview curious about how the Knicks envisioned her candidacy. “If the Knicks would have offered me the job, I would have had to do it,” she said. “It’s not just for me, it’s for women … it’s the freakin’ New York Knicks.”

The Knicks ultimately hired veteran coach Mike Brown to succeed Tom Thibodeau, who was dismissed after guiding the team to its first Eastern Conference finals in a quarter-century. According to league sources, Staley impressed New York executives during the process but was not among the finalists.

Staley, 55, acknowledged that she challenged the organization with questions about inclusivity and the implications of hiring a woman, which may have impacted her chances at getting the job.

“The NBA has to be ready for a female head coach,” she said.

A Naismith Hall of Famer and three-time NCAA champion with South Carolina, Staley signed a contract extension in January worth more than $25 million through the 2029-30 season. She has previously been linked to NBA openings, including an interview with the Portland Trail Blazers in 2021.

Her candidacy with New York came amid a broader but gradual rise in women on NBA sidelines. Several women currently serve as assistants, including the Los Angeles Lakers’ Lindsey Harding, who was the first female head coach to win G League Coach of the Year honors in 2024. No woman has yet been appointed to a full-time NBA head coaching role.

NFL News: Dolphins GM: RB De’Von Achane to play in season opener

Miami Dolphins running back De’Von Achane is expected to be ready for the season opener against the host Indianapolis Colts on Sept. 7, general manager Chris Grier announced Wednesday.

Achane, who has been battling a calf injury, was held out of the last two preseason contests. He also did not participate in several practices, a decision the team said was precautionary.

“All indications to us is Achane will be ready Week 1,” Grier said.

The Dolphins already are thin at running back after Alexander Mattison sustained a season-ending neck injury and Jaylen Wright injured his leg in the preseason. Sixth-round pick Ollie Gordon II is expected to spell Achane in the season opener.

Achane, 23, had 203 carries for 907 yards and six touchdowns, and caught 78 passes on 87 targets for 592 yards and six TDs in 17 regular-season games (16 starts) last season.

As a rookie in 2023, Achane rushed 103 times for 800 yards and eight TDs. He also had 27 receptions for 197 yards and three scores in 11 games (four starts).

Miami selected Achane in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

INDY News: Report: IndyCar exploring potential D.C. street race

IndyCar has explored the potential of holding a street race in the District of Columbia as soon as next year, according to a report by the Sports Business Journal.

The concept remains in the early stages and may not come together, according to the report. It is also unknown what sites IndyCar has been presented with and whether they may include options in Virginia and Maryland.

IndyCar will conclude its season at Nashville Superspeedway this weekend, and next season’s schedule is not expected to be released prior to the 2025 finale. The series will hold a new race in Arlington, Texas, next year, and has been evaluating a potential race in Mexico City.

Fox Corp. announced last month that it acquired 33 percent of IndyCar owner Penske Entertainment, which could lead to the series exploring new race locations. The last street race to take place in D.C. was the 2022 Cadillac Grand Prix of Washington, D.C., an American Le Mans Series sports car event was held around RFK Stadium.

The United States will be celebrating the country’s 250th anniversary in 2026. Among other events in the works, UFC boss Dana White said recently that the promotion will “absolutely” hold a fight on the south lawn of the White House on July 4.

IndyCar declined to comment to SBJ on its report about a potential D.C.-area race.

MLS News: LAFC D Maxime Chanot retires after 10-year MLS career

0

Los Angeles FC defender Maxime Chanot announced his retirement from professional soccer on Wednesday.

The 35-year-old Luxembourg international spent 10 seasons in MLS with New York City FC (2016-23) and LAFC (2024-25).

Chanot contributed 10 goals in 237 appearances across all competitions during his MLS career. He featured in only one MLS match this season while dealing with a head injury.

“Since I was a child, I dreamed of becoming a professional footballer,” Chanot said. “I chased that dream with passion and determination. Nothing came easy, but I am proud that I never gave up.

“For 19 years, I fought every single day, I pushed my limits and got back up after every fall. I have had the immense honor and privilege of playing for great clubs around the world, representing my country and living a career full of unforgettable moments.

“Despite all my efforts over the past few months to return to the pitch, my head injury forces me to step away from the game I love. While I had hoped for a different ending, I trust in God’s plan and leave the game with a peaceful heart filled with gratitude for everything I have been blessed to experience in my career.”

A finalist for MLS Defender of the Year in 2019, he won an MLS Cup (2021) and Campeones Cup (2022) with NYCFC and a US Open Cup (2024) with LAFC.

“Max has enjoyed success everywhere he has played,” LAFC co-president and general manager John Thorrington said. “He has been a model of professionalism whose consistency and leadership with both his clubs and his national team will long be remembered. We are grateful for everything he brought to LAFC, and we wish Max the absolute best as they begin this next chapter together.”

Chanot scored four goals in 72 caps with the Luxembourg national team. He also played professionally in France, England and Belgium.

NHL News: Oilers F Connor McDavid doesn’t want to rush contract talks

As he prepares to enter the final season on his contract, Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid said he won’t rush extension talks.

“Like I said in June, I had every intention to take my time with it, and I still feel see the same way,” McDavid said on Wednesday. “Take my time and go through everything.”

The 28-year-old forward spoke to the media at Canada’s Olympic orientation camp in Calgary, his first comments since falling to the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final in June.

It was the second straight loss in the championship series for the Oilers and McDavid said his goal remains to lead Edmonton to its first championship since 1990.

“I have every intention to win in Edmonton, that’s my only focus maybe next to winning the gold medal with Canada,” he said. “Take my time and go through it with my family, my agent, and everybody involved.”

McDavid is heading into the final season of an eight-year, $100 million contract signed in July 2017. A new deal is likely to make the Oilers captain one of the highest-paid players in NHL history.

Currently, the $12.5 million average annual value of his deal ranks fourth in the league behind teammate Leon Draisaitl ($14 million), Toronto’s Auston Matthews ($13.25M) and Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon ($12.6M).

McDavid recorded 100 points (26 goals, 74 assists) in 67 games in 2024-25, adding 33 points (seven goals, 26 assists) in 22 playoff games.

The three-time Hart Trophy winner has tallied 1,082 points (361 goals, 721 assists) in 712 games since the Oilers drafted him No. 1 overall in 2015.

ATP News: Fifth-seeded Jack Draper (arm) withdraws from U.S. Open

0

No. 5 seed Jack Draper was forced to withdraw from the U.S. Open on Wednesday due to a lingering arm injury.

“I’m sorry to say I’ll be withdrawing from the US open,” the British No. 1 posted on X Wednesday. “I tried my very best to be here and give myself every chance to play but the discomfort in my arm has become too much and I have to do what is right and look after myself. Thank you for all the support.”

Draper had been set for a second-round match against Belgium’s Zizou Bergs, who advanced to the third round by walkover.

Draper came out on top in a first-round matchup Monday with Federico Agustin Gomez. However, it was a struggle for the 23-year-old Englishman to get the 6-4, 7-5, 6-7 (7), 6-2 victory over the Argentine qualifier.

Entering the U.S. Open, Draper hadn’t played a match since his second-round exit at Wimbledon in early July and recently revealed he was diagnosed with bone bruising in his left humerus, an injury that typically takes eight weeks of recovery time.

“I first started feeling it towards the middle of the clay season,” Draper told reporters Saturday. “It kind of got progressively a bit worse. … It is one of those where, if you keep playing with it, it could become very, very serious. So I had to take some time out.

“Tough injury to have, but definitely one where I had to look after it.”

Draper made it to the semifinals in last year’s U.S. Open, falling to eventual winner Jannik Sinner.

Bergs will next face the winner of Thursday’s match between No. 31 seed Gabriel Diallo of Canada and Jaume Munar of Spain.

Panthers exec departs to become Timberwolves/Lynx CEO

Florida Panthers executive Matthew Caldwell accepted a 10-year deal to serve as the CEO of the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves and WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx, the teams announced Wednesday.

Caldwell, who will relinquish his role as the president of business operations with the NHL’s Panthers, will begin overseeing “day-to-day business operations and high-level strategic initiatives for the Timberwolves, Lynx and Iowa Wolves” (of the G League). He will assume those responsibilities on Sept. 2 from interim-CEO Kelly Laferriere, who has led the organization during its ownership transition period.

Caldwell joined the Panthers as chief operating officer in 2014 before being promoted to CEO in 2016. Now, he will serve under new Timberwolves and Lynx owners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez.

“I love the NHL. I’ve enjoyed hockey and I’m a big fan of it,” Caldwell said. “But the NBA is just a much bigger, global platform. I really believe in Marc and Alex and their vision and what they’re trying to do. They’re trying to make Minnesota best in class.”

Lore and Rodriguez provided a joint statement: “Our vision is for the Timberwolves and Lynx to set a new standard of excellence in pro sports and we’re confident that Matthew is the leader needed to make that a reality. Leading our organization into an innovative new era requires an exceptional individual at the helm and Matthew’s proven track record leading the business of the Florida Panthers is undeniable. We can’t wait to see the remarkable impact his bold leadership will have on this organization.”

Panthers owner Vincent Viola was quick to applaud Caldwell for his leadership, vision and dedication to the NHL franchise.

“There are very few opportunities I would advise him to pursue, but working with Alex Rodriguez and Marc Lore on a global platform like the NBA is at the top of that list,” Viola said. “It’s tremendously bittersweet for our family, but we recognize this is an exceptional opportunity and great next step in his career. Matt’s impact on our organization has been immeasurable and he leaves with our respect and gratitude.”

Caldwell was proud of what he accomplished during his time with the Panthers, who are the two-time reigning Stanley Cup champions.

“These past nine years as CEO of the Florida Panthers have been the highlight of my professional career. The Viola family has been a second family to me, and I will be forever grateful for the opportunity to have led this historic franchise turnaround,” Caldwell said. “… The Panthers franchise is in great hands with the executive team and hockey leadership in place and I will be cheering from afar as the team continues its championship run.”

Owner and alternate governor Michael Viola will oversee the search for a new president of business operations for the Panthers.
